EDITORS NOTE Worldwide pandemic, natural disasters, the unjust killing of George Floyd, and more- 2020 has taught us the importance of unifying the individual into the collective through community and sympathy towards one another. 2020 has brought us the opportunity to shed light on the fight we're all striving for; the battle for social, economic, political justice, and equality. On the days that we could not shout or scream louder, our creative actions spoke for us. In this issue, we are collaborating with SVA's Black Student Union on the magazine's front and back cover. With the ongoing revolution against racism and police brutality, we wanted to showcase some works by students directly affected by it. Featured on the front cover is the president of BSU, Emmanuel Massillon. In his work, Double Consciousness, he specifically talks about the psychological challenges African Americans experience in a racist white society. On the back cover is Ryan Cosbert, a BSU member, with her work My Cup Runneth Over. She talks about two major issues faced by black people in the inner city: not having enough to meet their needs and struggling through systematic oppression, which puts them in situations where drugs and bloodshed are sometimes their means of survival. Through this collaboration, we hope to shed light on such issues and amplify students' voices. Louder than words, louder than actions, art has its way to transcend one's voice, to exclaim the call for a better world. In this issue, we are celebrating our student body's underrepresented voices. This issue features all realms of art by Bipoc and LGBTQ+ contributors such as poems, sculptures, paintings, photography, illustrations, and collages.

The Strigoi never left. They are here. Haunting each of us, by bunches. You get to feed it time and desire, or Stare it in the eye, first step to dominate. The rest will follow naturally... LOUDER

WHO WE ARE I am strong, not weak. I am an open diary, not a closed book. I am determined, not submissive. I am real, not pretentious or fake. I am all these things, but when faced by a situation that is hell bent on revealing a side of me that I was always oblivious of, I realize that at that point in time, I suddenly become everything I think I am not. This realization actually becomes an integral part of who I truly am later on, therefore, resulting in becoming who I thought I was not, into accepting all those attributes and then becoming a culmination of two identities that reside within my one and only mind and self. 25

This self-portrait made on a found piece of imperfect wood represents elements of who I am not integrated with who I am. I am not a found piece, I was carefully, meticulously and perfectly planned, yet I have all sorts of imperfections. There are two major sides to me, multiple identities if you will; one is black and white and looks identical to my physical self yet does not have the essence of who I am as a personality, the other has all those missing ingredients, she is full of color, vibrations and emotions, but she looks like a different person altogether. These two sides, no matter how contrasting, have simultaneously made it possible to learn and live within one body, mind and soul, giving each other the power to take over when the other feels weak and out of place. Therefore, all that I am not is actually who I really am.

EMMANUEL MASSILLON
RYAN COSBERT
Emmanuel Massillon is an African American conceptual artist who works in several different mediums. His upbringing in the inner city of Washington D.C. shapes the unique narrative that he strives to convey through his work, which is introducing others to new ideas by creating work from day-to-day life to politically charged topics. Language and materials are very much an important part of his work; he uses many visual puns and many examples of street vernacular which add to the overall experience of his artwork. The materials used in his work vary from bullet shells, dirt, found objects and wood which act as a way to express his perception on the world by using materials found in his own environment and cultural history. With influences as diverse as folk art, music, art history and African history, Massillon uses many reference points to get his ideas across to his viewers in a simple yet evoking manner.
Ryan Cosbert is an African-American multidisciplinary artist who works in various mediums. Cosbert aims to bring her onlookers to see things from an internal / external perspective to explore and ignite conversations while encouraging higher consciousness. She strives to provide exploration on the trauma inflicted upon and in the African diaspora throughout history along with the enduring effects it has on their lives. Cosbert rigorously researches the history and people of the African diaspora that she uses as inspiration for the subjects of her work. Within Cosbert’s abstract paintings she creates a sense of control using the grid format to apply what she calls “tiles” which create a geometrical balance. She forms different layers using the tiles, paints, and physical objects giving the work more depth and a three dimensional composition. Both color and material play an important role. She often incorporates physical objects and colors that tie directly to the subject matter of the painting.
