Research and Development – Tried and Tested Mixtures Boston Seeds utilise their own seven acre site for the research and development of our Boston Seeds range of seed mixtures. The site is divided up into trial plots which are sown with our grass, wildflower and environmental seed mixtures. The trial ground allows us to monitor, evaluate and improve our mixtures to ensure that what we supply performs exactly the way we want it to. On the trial ground we monitor and evaluate the following; • • • • • • • •
Speed of Establishment Species Population, Competition and Survival Disease Identification Disease Assessment Flowering Period Ground Cover Winter Hardiness Sowing Rate Effect
As well as trialling our own mixtures, Boston Seeds also undertake consultancy work to develop specialist seed mixtures, including habitat creation, specialist landscape projects for reinstatement and favourable environments for insects.
We welcome visits to our research and development site. For more information about the trial ground or to arrange a visit please email us on info@bostonseeds.co.uk or phone 0800 883 0169.

Basic Paddock Care: Clear droppings daily Removing droppings from your horse’s paddock will prevent infestation from unwanted weeds and will reduce the number of worm larvae spreading into the grass. Grazing rotation To keep the grass healthy, it is best to divide the paddock into sections, moving the horses around according to the levels of growth. If an area is overgrazed it will lead to weed infestation and compaction. If an area is under-grazed the grass will become tall and unpalatable. If a section becomes too tall it can be topped down to 10cm or a hay cut taken.
tel: 0800 883 0169
Harrowing Occasional use of ‘chain harrows’ will break up any droppings, help air get to the soil and encourage new shoot growth. Harrowing should only be done when conditions are dry. Paddocks also benefit from harrowing in the spring as this will remove thatch and encourage fresh spring growth. Overseeding Areas which require reseeding should be raked or harrowed to open up the sward and create a seed bed. The seed should then be broadcast on to the surface and either harrowed or rolled again to ensure it makes good contact with the soil.
5
Fertiliser An application of fertiliser will help to maintain good ground cover to reduce the infestation of weeds and provide good quality grazing. If laminitis is a concern an application of ‘low nitrogen fertiliser’ will give the grass a boost but with less of a sudden flush of lush grass. Weeds The best way to reduce weeds is to employ a combination of all the points listed here, as this will create the ideal environment for grass to thrive. If weeds are a problem they should either be pulled by hand, or treated with an appropriate selective weedkiller.

Establishing Grass Seeds
Grass Seeds
When to Sow: Grass seed is best sown any time between March and October. It is best to avoid extremes of temperature and periods of drought or waterlogging. Ideal conditions for germination are when the ground is damp and daytime temperatures are 18-20°C and the minimum night time temperature is no less than 5°C.
Sowing the Seeds:
Prepare the Soil:
The grass seed should be sown at the recommended rate, which is normally a maximum of 50g/m². To get an even coverage it is best applied using a seed spreader or alternatively dividing the area into sections to help manage how much seed is applied. Once the seed is applied it can be either lightly raked over or rolled in to ensure that the seed makes good contact with the soil.
The soil will need digging over or rotavating to a depth of 10-15cm, with any further debris being removed and any large pieces of soil being broken down. After being dug over it will then need gently treading down and raking over to leave the surface smooth, firm and free of debris. This will make an ideal seedbed for the seedlings to put down roots and develop.
The area will require clearing of any debris such as stones, bricks, sticks or roots. Any weeds will need removing or treating with a weedkiller according to manufacturer’s instructions. If a weedkiller such as Roundup is used you can sow seed two weeks afterwards.
Before sowing the seed it is recommended that a ‘Pre Seeding Fertiliser’ is applied. This can be broadcast onto the surface and then lightly raked over to incorporate it into the soil surface. The fertiliser is specially formulated to provide better root and shoot development which make the lawn thicken out quicker.
Watering:
First Cut:
If conditions become dry following sowing, keep the area moist by preferably using a sprinkler. It is important not to flood the area, as this can lead to seed being washed away. It is always best to water in the evening as this reduces the amount of water that is lost to evaporation. Another good tip; instead of giving your grass a light watering every day, give it a heavier watering every other day as this will help the water to penetrate deeper into the soil.
Your lawn will need cutting when the grass reaches 5-8cm in height. The first few cuts should remove no more than one third of the leaf at any one time. As the grass is cut it will begin to thicken out and become denser. The height of cut can gradually be reduced until it reaches the required height.
First Feed:
Weeds:
10 weeks after sowing, the grass can be given another treatment with a fertiliser. During the first few weeks the grass plants will be using nutrients rapidly, so a top up of nutrients will certainly help to keep the grass in peak condition. After this you should aim to treat the grass with a Spring and Summer feed in April and July, and with an Autumn and Winter feed any time from September onwards.
It is not unusual for weeds to establish amongst your new grass, as they are likely to be already present in the soil. Many weeds will die back with mowing but if weeds remain a problem you can treat the area with a selective weedkiller like Verdone, according to manufacturers instructions.

Establishing Wildflowers
Wildflowers
Using Seeds: • Sowing: To assist sowing it is advisable to mix the wildflower seed with a carrier (dry sand or compost). This will help in distributing the seed evenly over a large area. The seed is best distributed using a pedestrian or hand held spreader to provide an even distribution. After applying, the seed can be lightly rolled in to ensure good contact with the soil. • Establishment Times: If sowing an 80/20 mix grasses will appear within 14-21 days. The wildflowers will vary depending upon species - some may take only a few weeks, while others can take several months. • Cornfield Annuals: Annuals will flower the same year if sown during the spring or the previous autumn. • Perennials: Perennial species will establish during the first year of sowing and flower during the second year.
• Select the area: Wildflowers prefer a poor soil with low nutrients. Avoid ground which has been heavily fertilised in the past. • Clear the area: If the area has been overgrown with weeds it is important to reduce the number of weed seeds in the soil. It may be necessary to allow time for the first flush of weeds to germinate and then treat with a weedkiller before sowing any seed. Once the weeds have been removed, try not to disturb the soil as this may bring further seeds to the surface. • Prepare the soil: Create a seed bed by raking and breaking up any large clumps of soil ready for sowing your wildflowers. • Sowing times: Seed can be sown any time from mid-March until late October. The ideal time is autumn, but avoid periods of extreme heat during the summer months. • Sowing Rates: Sow 80/20 mixtures at 5g/m2 and 100% mixtures @ 3g/m2.
Using Plug Plants: • On arrival: When your plugs arrive open the boxes immediately, lightly water and leave in good sunlight until they are required for planting. This will help them to recover from being in transit. • Planting Time: Planting can be done year round provided the soil is moist. The optimum time to plant is in the autumn or spring. If planting in the summer make sure that water is available in case conditions turn hot and dry. • Planting Density: Suggested planting density is 5-7 plants per square metre. • Preparation: Any grass should be close-mown prior to planting and the cuttings removed. It may be necessary to occasionally top off the grass down to 10cm whilst the plugs are establishing to prevent the grass smothering the plugs out. • Planting: To remove the plugs from the tray gently squeeze each one from the base and slowly pull it out. Using a trowel or a dibber, make a hole in the ground as deep as the plug itself. Gently insert the plug, firm the soil around it and water in to prevent it from drying out.
Using Bulbs: • Selecting Species: All our bulbs are suitable for naturalising in conditions that are close to their natural habitat. This means woodland types will thrive in the shade of shrubs and small garden trees. Wetland plant will thrive in boggy areas around a garden pond, etc. • Planting Time: Bulbs grow best when planted whilst they are dormant in the late summer and autumn. At this time, they can be planted in large drifts in grass or under trees. Some bulbs are supplied freshly lifted for immediate planting. • Preparation: The key to successful planting is good preparation, making sure that the ground is weed free and the grass cut short to reduce competition and give the bulbs the best possible start. • Planting: In general, bulbs should be planted at a depth equal to the height of the bulb, except: snowdrops (5 cm); summer snowflakes (10 cm); daffodils (10 cm); bluebells (5 - 10 cm); snake’s head fritillary (10 cm); wood anemone (2 cm).
Maintaining Wildflowers: Spring Maintenance:
• The grasses will start to grow before the wildflowers, so a spring cut in April down to 7.5cm will reduce competition from the grasses. Remove all grass cuttings to avoid adding fertility back to the soil. • If any unwanted weed species emerge these will need removing either by hand or by carefully spot treating with a weedkiller. Weeds are more likely to show in the first year after sowing.
Autumn Maintenance:
• Towards the end of the summer (August to September) most flowers will begin to die back, this is the time to make a ‘hay cut’. The area will want cutting down to around 7.5cm with the cuttings being left to dry on the surface for up to a week, this will allow the cut flowers to shed their seed. The cuttings can then be raked up and removed. • If there are annuals present it is important that their seed is returned to the soil to allow them to regenerate again the following spring. To achieve this, the area will need vigorously raking or for larger areas harrowing. This will break the surface and allow the annual seed to make contact with the soil. Wildflowers are an attractive addition to planting schemes and can help support a wide range of pollinating insects.

Phosphorous is important for health and vigorous roots. Important in pre-seeding fertilisers. Higher levels in spring applications lead to earlier spring growth and healthier grass through the summer. Potassium is important to harden the plant, improving health through the autumn and winter.
