_CAFETERIA @ CAMPUS Project Brief :

Location : Role :

To design a cafeteria in campus that acts as a recreational space for the students in the campus. The cafe also had to stand out in the college by providing a source of recreation and fun to its users through its design. Trichy ,India Design Ideas, Drawings and Modeling (Rhino), Diagrams (Adobe Illustrator ), Presentation (Adobe Photoshop)

User Analysis

- lack basic necessities for students. - absence of a good overall form or view. - lack areas to park two wheelers. - absence of proper seating areas, waiting areas, greenery etc.

The major users, the students, commute throughout the campus by walk, cycles, skateboards. Minority of the users use powered motor vehicles. The idea is to incorporate a design element for the users to engage in.

Elevation

Plan

Present Condition

The idea was to create a form that would stand out from the existing eating joints in the campus and also serve a good purpose. The roof was used to create a unique profile for the building. It not only rises from the ground but also provides an area for the students to have small birthday parties and celebrations. This also ensures proper privacy for the outside visitors even with the college students present.

_FLEXHOUSE.SOCIAL HOUSING An affordable social housing for high, medium and low income residents for HUDCO (The Housing and Urban Development Corporation) Competition 2015. Location : Chennai,India Team Strength : 4 people Role : GROUP WORK-Team Leader Designing (Flexible and Customizable Dwelling Units) Modeling (Trimble Sketchup) Rendering and Visualization ( Vray) Presentation ( Photoshop,Illustrator,Indesign) Team Strength : Video presentaion link - https://youtu.be/jT1k220UhYs Project Brief :

Present Condition An affordable housing complex for all sections of the society;EWS,LIG,MIG,and HIG based on providing flexible customised living spaces.

Why Flexibility Housing

in

Home is the center of one’s existence and a house is a lifetime investment. The involvement of the user can be considered as the democratization of housing.

Planar and Volumetric Flexibilty It is a response to the internal changes due to need for expansion during the lifetime of the occupant. If the housing prototype cannot adapt, then the users will have to move on, which is both socially and financially disruptive.

Customizable Spaces Between Levels

For growth and change of the structure -for the user -by the user -according to the user. FLEXHOUSE . HOUSING . SHORTLISTED ENTRY

17

It gives the user an advantage to decide the separation of his/her living space in terms of levels.

Future Expansion

The LIG (Low Income Group)

The EWS (Economically Weaker Section) 1

2

Movable Partition Walls Movable walls that may slide along the floor provide the user with the freedom to customize the area and circulation in his interiors according to his spatial preferences.

3

Models showing different options for spaces

Tried out various models that helped us understand various possibilities in volumes and space changes in scale

1.Multiuse of Kitchen Area 2. Multi functional Balcony 3. Bed / Seating A fold-able kitchen slab that is fixed with hinges. A space saving idea in the sense that the space can be used for other purposes at night.

A panel containing the window shall be fixed with hinges for folding it indoors making it a table. The fixed table can further shift outdoors making it a balcony or a shop front with a plank on top

It gives the user an advantage to decide the separation of his/her living space in terms of levels.

The HIG and MIG (High Income and Low Income Group) Modular Volumes

Modular Volumes Options

Volumetric flexibility has been established by offering the clients different options in the arrangement of their modular volumes. They are also given an option of having a single-floor home for those who prefer having no staircases. Every HIG/MIG client shall be able to design their homes according to their needs and preferences by filling out a self-generating questionnaire that metes out a fair layout of the preferred plan. This plan may be further customized by the client.

PLANS (HIG and MIG)

18

Modular Volumes

Support and Infill Method

Inverted T-Beams allow the introduction of utility distribution space above the ceiling and under the raised floors. Therefore ducts and piping pass over the beams without use of “sleeves to the main horizontal utility zones under exterior corridors. Extra space may be used for storage.

The idea was to have a flexible framework support with various flexible modules to be plugged in according to the user needs and survey output according to the questionnaire output. FLEXHOUSE . HOUSING . SHORTLISTED ENTRY

_Lawrence School.AMPHITHEATER Project Brief : An amphitheater for Lawrence School in Ooty. Redesigning the existing steep landscape for the new design helped me learn the constraints and benefits in designing fr a steep site profile. Location : Ooty,India. Project nearing Completion. Role : GROUP WORK- Core Team Member (Team Members - 3) Preliminary Design and Drawings (Amphitheater Steps ) Modeling (Rhino) Rendering and Visualization ( Vray, Photoshop) Presentation ( Photoshop,Illustrator)

Changing View-points:

The shape of the existing Landscape changed to achieve more views into the football ground and also taking into consideration access points, and orientation.

Existing Features:

Adding Access points and View points:

The site has an existing slope with stairs built from the landscape. It faces a football ground with accesway on top. The school buildings are marked in grey.

This step added the needed main access stairs and intermediate steps needed for circulation. Also three units/spaces were added for the technical room and viewing area for guests.

Plan :

Initial Proposal for the amphitheater

Various samples of rock and natural stone were used to try out the joinery and stability of the proposed design. Redesigning the existing steep landscape for the new design helped me learn the constraints and benefits in designing for a steep site profile. Also got a n exposure to work with stone Januaries and options of kund (step well) design and proportions.

Access steps on site
