The task of this diploma project was to design an Art gallery with a conference centre in Dainavos street – Gedimino avenue and it is next to one of the most important social spaces of the central city part – Lukiškių square. Pedestrian flows dermine spatial and functional decisions of the building. Three storey building with two underground floors for parking is being designed. Above-ground part includes art gallery, exhibition rooms, showoff rooms, multimedia rooms, cinema, restaurant and conference centre. The volume of the building is interfluent with the surounding buildings, continuing the perimetrical coverage of the streets.

EXPLANATORY REPORT PROBLEM We, as human population, are facing serious ecosystem problems. Our current actions: burning carbon based fuel, cutting rainforest and destroying animal wildlife brought us to the point, where many of fauna and flora is becoming endangered or extinct. Raising carbon dioxide levels pollutes the air so fast, that biosphere itself can‘t handle it anymore. As a result we can see greenhouse effect taking all over the Earth: increasing heats, colder and longer winters, raising sea levels. All these effects just predicts, that in the future Earths picture is going to change even more drastic. Humans must take actions to change this future, but even though we stop greenhouse effect, our ecosystem is going to change. Our proposal is

IDEA The idea behind our project was to save todays wildlife by creating artificial environment. Buildings concept is formed from a sphere (Earth), submerged into the ocean. The Earth has six main layers: heavy layers (inner core, outer core and mantle) and light layers (crust and atmosphere). Thinking hypothetically, if we could put smaller „Earth“ into ocean as a sphere, all the layers affected by gravity would distribute from heaviest on the bottom to lightest on the top. Lightest layers, consisting Earth’s crust and atmosphere would float on top of the water. We take these two layers of a sphere as a concept for our building (BIODOME). The dome sustains four main climate zone ecosystems: tropical / subtropical, mediterranean, arid and temperate. All zones require different atmospheric conditions, so in order to create these conditions we separate them in different closed areas. Each area creates artificial atmosphere (rain, regulated sunlight duration, wind and snow) suitable only for its climate zone. Other ecosystem processes, such as converting CO2 into O2 and vice versa, creating nutrients from decaying living tissues (compost), and regulating animals population goes on itself, as dictated laws of nature. Water is being reproduced naturally and if needed artificially delivered by sprinklers. Dome also consists living quarters for visiting people and laboratory for scientists, studying naturally emerging processes in the ecosystems. Placing the building in the ocean enables all possibilities to make it self-sufficient. Also, to reduce energy

BIODOME PROGRAM PLAN: The Dome is split into two pieces by an axis. Its direction leads from East to West in order to emphasize solar movements during shifting day. Axis itself serves as pedestrian area, consisting green spaces, outside theater, a beach with pool. Southern part of the building is given to laboratory and tropical / subtropical climate zone area. Northern part is divided between the rest of climate zones and living quarters. Reaching the building is possible in two ways: by boat and helicopter. Dock is placed on the Eastern side of the axis.

THE CONCEPT

CONSTRUCTION / SOLAR & WIND PANELS The building is floating on a base, which is made out of three structural elements: base shell, caisson inside the shell and a span. Caisson is made out of light metals and filled with air, which keeps the building from drowning. Base has to stay still, always directing same way, so it is anchored to the bottom of the ocean. The building is placed in the zone, where is no snow load, so upper structure has to hold itself and panel constructions. On top of the span column grid is layed, which is connected with trusses. Buildings perimeter, facing the ocean is reinforced with concrete in order to withstand waves. Whole building is surrounded by artificial „rocks“ that repels incoming waves.

SECTION/ELEVATION Whole building facade is covered in a shell shaped structure of panels. Panel is a self-sufficient unit with solar energy absorbing panels on top of it. It has sunlight detectors so during day phases panel opens, in order to let in the sunlight or wind. A window, inside this panel, from one side is penetrable and from another reflective, this allows to reach maximum insolation possibilities.

PLAN SOLUTION / ZONES / ACTIVITIES

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE In order to sustain ecosystem weather conditions the Biodome requires enormous amounts of energy. The building has to be self-sufficient, so no one could stop it from operating, even if humans would stop looking over it. Placing building in ocean opens all available renewable energy possibilities. Whole building is covered with solar panels, generating energy from solar radiation, some of the panels has turbines, generating power from wind. Water energy can be gathered in many different ways. Biodome uses “VIVACE” vortex hydro energy generators, which are placed under the base of the building. Also artificial “rocks”, surrounding the building serve as Wave Energy generators.

AREA Designed in the area of an old holiday home, project consists of two volumes: reconstructed building, where a luxurious four-star hotel was established and new elliptical irregular cone-shaped extension with a complex of swimming pools and saunas. Pine forest directed to the projects leading concept: architectural form of the building as reminiscent of a pine cone or a hedgehog, blends into the surrounding environment. Dominant gray and orange colors were taken from a glimpse to the trunk of a pine. Project helped to reduce unemployment in a small city by revitalizing tourism and local businesses.

ABOUT PROJECT The main focus of the project is the swimming pool and sauna complex. Original steel frame structure with facing materials was produced and assembled at the factory, then separate segments were brought to the constructions site, where they were finally assembled. Since there are no recurrent details all over the facade, cone is a perfect example of Non-Standart Architecture. Triangular shapes were used in order to obtain the unusual volume and to create smooth shift between construction beams. Building information model was used to describe the whole structure and precisely fulfill the construction so that all irregular shapes would connect into single complex three-dimensional form. The five-storey hotel has a small conference room and a restaurant. Hotel reconstruction project was prepared in a way to maintain the architectural character of the former building. Construction scheme and functional-spacial structure were basically preserved. Floor area increased slightly after the reconstruction by expanding the lobby and the dining room on the ground floor, and by designing one additional storey on top. More space was produced by dismantling the old walls, deepening the basement, where it was fitted with healthcare facilities such as massage, salt rooms and mud baths. Interior of the building was designed to be as close to the nature as possible. The main intention creating the interior was to make surrounding nature perceptible. Inclined windows of the swimming pool and sauna complex allows visitors to admire the pines and feel like being in an open air. Conventional solutions have been abandoned when selecting colors and materials for the interior spaces. Attempt was to find the unique character of Lithuanian interior.

SECTION

SUSTAINABILITY

11

Interiors were created from high quality natural, organic materials such as natural oak plywood. Sustainable energy sources were used for heating: building is equipped with an autonomous geothermal heating system. Natural materials were used in order to minimize the amount of asphalt when creating building environment.
