ASAP members record wins in 2011 industry awards The Advertising Suppliers Association of the Philippines made a mark at last year’s Araw, Agency of the Year and Tanaw Liwanag awards. Hit Productions led the way with four Araws as Unitel, Revolver Studios, Film Experts, AdPhoto and Straight Shooters Media took home trophies as well. Netting Gold Craft
Araws for best direction were Filmex’s “Tingala Sa Baba” (Look up Below) for the Nestlé Philippines Kasambahay Habambuhay (Home Companion, For Life) 100th anniversary short film series and Unitel’s School for Asian Development Bank. The latter also scored a second Gold for best cinematography alongside Good Fight by Revolver Studios for Ayala Center.
Also by Revolver Studios, Andok’s quirky Perfect Breasts was cited for best editing, while the throwback spot Action for Pepsi Pinas earned a Gold for best sound design in film, courtesy of Hit Productions. AdPhoto’s remarkable Jellyfish poster for Boysen was the judges’ choice for best photography for a Gold. ASAP members also enjoyed considerable success through other prestigious award-giving bodies. Hit Productions, Unitel Productions and Underground
Logic dominated their respective categories on the way to Agency of the Year citations. Clear Channels Inc. stole the show for Max’s delivery box lighting panel to take the Best In OOH Lighting Tanaw Liwanag award. It was a solid showing that highlighted ASAP’s solidarity, scope and capacity. With 2012 well underway, we can expect to celebrate more excellent work from our member agencies. ~ by Vitalstrats Creative Solutions

NEWS BYTES ASAP Members and Industry Partners Raise Funds for Sendong Victims Members of the Advertising Suppliers Association of the Philippines joined forces with friends from the industry to create one meaningful fund-raiser to sustain Sendong relief projects. The free entry variety show and concert last January 28 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle got the green light of the Quezon City local government. Industry affiliates United Print Media Group, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, Philippine Association of National Advertisers, as well as the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines lent resources and extended services to the endeavor. Also rolling their sleeves to help were the Independent Blocktimers Association and the Technical Group for Events and Entertainment of the Philippines.
This powerhouse group of the country’s advertising and entertainment industry leaders staged Cause I’m Sendong All My Love for You with performances by local artists also on a mission to spread hope. The high-energy event was a sure-fire hit created in the spirit of hope and goodwill. Just over 2 months after the killer typhoon struck the southern cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, Sendong victims still in need of assistance could benefit from shelter rehabilitation and home building projects. Targeting P1.5 million, all proceeds from the ASAP-led project sponsorships and donations will be coursed through the Pelaez Foundation and the Philippine National Red Cross.

John Chua: More than a job, it’s Photography With a Difference There are many ways to describe this man, and ‘achiever’ tops the list. One of the country’s leading photographers, John Chua is just as passionate with his other interests. As founder of Photography with a Difference (PWD), a volunteer’s group on various advocacies, AdPhoto’s main man champions socially conscious and family-centric activities that show the depth of goodwill in this awardwinning photographer. When he is not shooting for major advertising campaigns, he is up in choppers doing aerial photography, one of

his greatest delights. On weekends, he brings special children with special challenges, and their families, to the Manila Zoo to have a delightful time with Maali, John’s adopted pet elephant. These same children also get plane ride treats courtesy of the Philippine Air Force, a firm supporter of his Reach for the Sky project. Next up, John’s PWD group will return to the grounds of the Angeles Flying Club on March for another round of Reach for the Sky. In February, a large group of volunteers trooped to Banaue heeding John’s call to help save the Batad Rice Terraces. Due to neglect, the passage of time and other socioeconomic factors, the famed and fabled emerald swathes of mountainside rice paddies are falling to ruin. Thanks in part to John’s Batad Weekend Warriors, now shaping up to be a regular activity, things are looking up once more for the UNESCO Heritage Site. ~ by: Aye P. Ubaldo
It is a mouthful of technicals, but the message is one thing: awesome.
HIT PRODUCTIONS NOW IN SURROUND There’s just no stopping a hit! With AOY and Araw Awards trophies from 2011, top sound studio Hit Productions takes its craft to a new level recently launching its new mix room for cinema and long form material. The Hit Cinema is built for 7.1 DCP as well as for 5.1 DVD and TV audio post work, while its massive THX-rated sound system is made up of Genelec main speakers and two 18” subwoofers, as well as JBL surrounds. Powered by QSC amps running from a Dolby CP750 digital cinema processor. The 110-inch acoustically transparent screen displays a crystal clear image from an LED HD 1080p projector with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. The whole room is based around a Pro Tools HD 6 workstation. It is a mouthful of technicals, but the message is one thing: awesome. The cinema room comfortably seats a dozen on a sprawling leather couch. Its comfortable theater seats are from makers of the Rockwell Power Plant
cinema. There’s no scrimping on the service as the Hit Cinemas has its own private lounge/conference area and bathroom. Adjacent to the mix room is a vocal booth with closedcircuit camera monitoring, so is a large Foley SFX room fully equipped with various floor surfaces, props, toys and shoes. The theater also features a bathtub for water and splash sound effects. American engineer Rod Gervais designed its acoustics, same as Studio H, Hit Production’s live band recording room. Though still new to the market, the theater’s digital cinema surround capabilities have already been tried and tested by major brands like Smart, Gatorade, Nestlé, and Coca Cola. Hit Productions technical director Dennis Cham says the theater is scheduled to undergo official Dolby certification later this year. CLEAR CHANNELS GOT THE BALLS, AND OTHER STUFF TOO! Have balls, will party! Mirth aside, Clear Channels Proprietor and General Manager Varick Ong specializes in custom-designed gadgetry and gimmickry that bring events staging and out-of-home engagement to another level. Already a familiar sight at every Ad Congress since 2007, Clear Channel creations once again dotted the terrain at CamSur last November with inflatables for AirPhil Express, and the company group of SMART, Cignal, PLDT, Home Cable and TV5. Its trademark lighted balloon is a favorite of brand managers, event organizers and stage designers, as well as die-hard party people. At the Katy Perry gig in January, concert sponsor SMART required something original and fun. Clear Channels designed a sensor and LED-lights contraption inspired by the SMART logo that transformed the colors of inflatable balls through tactile contact. ~ Aye P Ubaldo

LIGHTS, 3D MAPPING, EVENT!
VideoSonic effects wow the industry Once upon a time the stage was an elevated platform whereupon lights and sounds, if available, were added for effects. Today, any place, be it field, building wall, nook or cranny, is a stage. Moreover, the stage has become its own event. VideoSonic’s Mart Miranda has lit up a number of stages, to say the least. This three-decade stage production veteran is a wizard of lights, and has since set the bar of stage lighting and design. Just a few flicks on a technical program, and it’s no longer just a ball game. It has become an audience-engaging, beat-blasting frenzy. What was just a basketball court is now a light-and-sound spectacle. In 2008, he drove home the use of floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall
LED lights on stage productions Hugely successful, his designs added dazzle to the concerts of Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez. Honing endlessly on his craft, his services now include the jawdropping 3D mapping technology. No less than Philippine taipan Manny V. Pangilinan is on his list of happy clients. And it is a long list that includes TV5, Mall of Asia, Opus Chrome Bar, Concepcion Industries. Last November, Mart’s Watchout technology carried the gamechanging theme with interactive play of light and shadows through the opening ceremony of adcongress22, and capped the event with the Araw Awards. In his downtime, Mart does marathons, joining the Hong Kong Marathon 2012 and the Pocari Sweat Duathlon at Bonifacio High Street. ~ by Aye P Ubaldo

The AdBoard has broad plans for 2012, which include waving the country’s flag not just in the local setting, but in the global arena, too. Top on the list is a bid to host Ad Asia 2017, and a committee under 4As President Alex Syfu of DM9 JaymeSyfu is being formed. The AdBoard will send a delegation to the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations in March, as well as the AdFest in Pattaya, Thailand where the country’s creatives have been consistent award winners. This year, AdBoard will roll out the bidding for the next three hosts of its franchise Philippine Advertising Congress event. “The AdCon is an AdBoard event. The lead host associations will organize, and we feel it will be to their advantage to know as early as now where and who will host the event. At the end of 2013, the next hosts can already receive the symbolic turnover,” expressed Ricky. ASAP and partner association Marketing and Opinion Research Society of the Philippines (MORES) are organizers of Ad Congress 2013. “Today, there are already letters from Davao and Puerto Princesa. The ad congress is such a popular event, and is now accessible to municipalities that never dreamt it would have a chance to host the event,” he added. In line with the push is a full support of the Department of Tourism’s It’s More Fun in the Philippines campaign. Last year, advertising veteran Ramon Jimenez Jr. was named the new Secretary of Tourism. ~ Aye P Ubaldo
