I’m a master student in landscape architecture at the academy of Amsterdam. I’m passionate about nature and people. In particular the space where they meet. In my designs I make it my goal to serve both nature and man making them interact in the best way possible. This portfolio contains my projects and work of the past 3 years.

Garden design/1 year e

Project 1: “Omsloten tuin te mater As my first project the objective was to learn the skills that are required in designing a garden. Learning to make structural plans, working with the scale and volume of plants, constructions and materials, the skill to draw a plan by hand.

Project 2: Tuin Waterstraat te Beernem The challenge with this garden was the length of the property. We needed to work within the constraints of the surrounding environment. As there was a field with some trees behind the property the garden gradually evaporated into the landscape. Near the residence there was a defined and more intensive design. The requests of the owners (swimming-pool with a poolhouse, a sculpture, a petanque lane, a maintenance-friendly design) were all integrated in my design.

beyond the functional design

Making of planting schemes and management plans.

Project 3: Queneau - Flobecq This garden had a hight difference of 7 meters from front to back, which was the major challenge to tackle. The garden is enclosed on the sides for privacy reasons, and open at the back to integrate the surroundings into the garden. The functional placement of a carport, hives, water features and a compost area were defined after a profound analysis and inventorisation.

Beyond the functional design

Creating technical plans and graphical processing of the design in photoshop.

Conceptual design Making an abstract design, based on a picture. The picture of moss growing on a pond shows us an interesting structure starting its growth from the centre and expanding in clusters around it.

Project 4: Domein ‘Ten Daele’ in Horebeke With a coverage of 2.5 ha this garden in horebeke was the largest project for my first year. The property holds a renovated square farm building situated on a hilltop with a magnificent view on the south side. The design plan is inspired by English landscape design and the arts & crafts movement. The design features meadows with flowers, ha-ha wall, plants against the facade, an orchard and thick hedgerows (bocage). In collaboration with Oswald Poppe and Joost Van Malderen

1. Victoria regiapark - Gentbrugge The creation of a new housing project in Gentbrugge led to the design and expansion of a new neighbourhood. The existing park (2.4 ha) was integrated in the expansion and needed to be intertwined with the new housing and living area inside a city environment. The site has a history as a nursery of Louis Van Houtte. Now the site has become a biodivers place where diverse generations can live.

In depth

We have a small forest suitable for walks and for children to play in and experience nature at the east side of the park. There is an open field in the centre, suitable for all kinds of activities (football, frisbee, picnic, sun bathing, ...). There is also a recreational hill (masking the view of an industrial site) and a little orchard situated on the north side. The pond between the open area and the new residential quarters forms a natural obstacle dividing the public and private space, whilst conserving the total view on the park.

2. International competition to design and build Seasonal Gardens on the Mainau Island. Each year a new Seasonal Garden theme is selected for the German Island of Mainau. In 2015 the theme was “secret gardens”. The project took place in collaboration between HfWU Nürtingen-Geislingen and HoGent. The work was carried out in working groups of two students from each college. The competition itself was carried out over a period of two days. This short deadline caused an interesting learning experience to produce a qualitative concept which will be realised later that year.

In depth

Our secret garden was built with an entry designed as a mysterious wall. The wall itself was built in chrome metal for reflection purposes. Behind the wall lies a street with concrete blocks, symbolising the human impact and cutting the garden in two halfs. Nature and culture stand opposed to each other and are both being reflected by the wall once one entered the garden. This is the secret the garden holds within. This design was constructed in collaboration with Sebastian Dages.

3. Ecowijk Gantoise - Gentbrugge The city of Ghent wants to embark on an ecological mission on the ruins of a former football stadium and sport area. This project will be the first 100% ecofriendly living community in Ghent. In our design we fully provided the opportunity for the community to live in comfort and be ecological at the same time. The environment friendly solutions were based on strategical positioning the buildings based on their social function, providing shared e-car facilities, quick access to public transportation, bike lanes directly connected to the city center. Water management systems were integrated in the design of the park. A market place was included and centrically configured for selling locally produced products. In collaboration with Joep Van Amelsvoort

4. Destelbergen kasteeldomein Reinaertpark

This townpark with townhall, a castle built in neoclassical style in 1913, was made in an English landscape style. As part of an integral restoration project, the objectives were threefold: the implantation of a new townhall building, the complete redesign of the townsquare, and finally the restoration of the entire park. Besides the general teamplay and design, I also took on individually the restoration of the central pond (including water quality, edge vegetation and management). In collaboration with Joep Van Amelsvoort, Harm Pauwels and Dries Pattyn

5. woonpark Het Lo

This project was located in Lotenhulle. The purpose was to integrated 120 houses in a wet rural area. The project is near the castle of Poeke with a vast forest and domain. In our project we continue the forest and let it intertwine with the urban center of Lotenhulle. as you come closer to the center of the village the density of the buildings increases. The wet area in the center of the site functions as a pond securing water retention. This is connected with the domain of the castle which has an elaborate watersystem. There are various types of buildings which are suited for a diverse range of people. In collaboration with Joep Van Amelsvoort

Internship at Strootman Landschapsarchitecten at strootman landschapsarchitecten i practiced different skills, required in the field of a landscape architect.

Oosterhof Rijssen Assisted in the making of a masterplan for a medieval domain. The utilisation of illustrator was crucial for this project which i handled in collaboration with Michiel van Zeijl.

Participated in a design lab that does research on which part health plays in spatial design and how to integrate it in design. the subject was an office area in Houten. the success of the project depended on working with other professionals, pitch ideas and integrate them in a central concept. In collaboration with Remco van der Togt.

Graduation project - Sugarfactory Moerbeke

on this brownfield located in Moerbeke (Belgium) stood a former sugarfactory. New plans are made for moerbeke which include connections between the surrounding nature and its center.

THE DESIGN The needs and expectations of Moerbeke are integrated and intertwined with the existing and historical structure of the site. The landscape identity of a place like Moerbeke and its regional values are restored; connection with the river, mobility connected with a larger network, placemaking, answering to the housing problem, ....
