During the early research phase, my partner and I were focusing on the education reform of Valparaiso. This process, not necessarily the content itselfm, greatly influenced my design thinking- being very critical on the arguments and presenting it clearly. 1795

Studio Valparaiso is a very analytical, research based studio project. First, we researched and indentified issues associating with the city; then, we analyzed the issues and discovered the interests in solving the problem; lastly, we built arguments sand made proposals.

ASCENSOR CORDILLERA
OPERATIONAL ELEVATOR NON-OPERATIONAL ELEVATOR NON-EXISTING ELEVATOR
ASCENSOR PANTEON
Beginning in 1883 the city of Valparaiso began to implement a system of ascensores that would serve as the primary mode of vertical transportation and circulation. Each individual ascensor was built in response to the needs to the surrounding community and neighborhood. As a result of earthquakes, fires, and general poor maintenance, the conditions of the ascensores began to decline and close. What was once a system of 30 operating ascensors, today only four continue to function. The majority of the ascensores that are no longer in service have been replaced by stairscases. While these staircases still allow for a means of vertical circulation, it is none the less inefficient and cumbersome to climb.

Longitudinal section conditions
One characteristic that makes the city of Valparaiso unique is the topography. As a result of extreme change in elevations, a spatial segregation is created between the lower plain (El Plan) and the 42 surrounding hills. The drastic change in elevation begins at 25m above sea level. This spatial segregation makes it extremely difficult for efficient pedestrian travel. Not only does it inhibit vertical connections for the people in the plan and the hills, but it can also be correlated with the lack of program that is sparcely distributed into hills. Currently the 95% of major program is located within the plan, which only directly services 5% of the residents.

By looking at the distribution of programs along the old ascensors and the 25-meter topography line we discovered that the existing elevators failed to provide the city with a long term vertical connection between the plan and the hill.

vertical circulation with programs At each of the selected sites we carefully address the existing programs and conditions of the site. We then select a program that either strengthen the existing program or recreate program where it is lacking. Intervention of program is either linked to the existing program or a new insertion based on the density, current use, and users. Providing each site with the appropriate program will therefore strengthen both the vertical circulation and programmatic patterns.

Strengthen the essence of museum aspect in the historical site Comparing to other programs that has thrived in the UNESCO site other than urban heiritage, the museums are not as prominent . By making an easier infrastructure to connect to the hill top and utilizing the existing context of cliff and historical facade, there is opportunity for developing vertical element and more museum programs.

UDII, Spring 2011 John Commazzi
This project starts with flexible programs that celebrate interaction, communication, and innovation. It is geared toward an informal collaboration center on the Knoll, which is located on the east bank of University of Minnesota. My attention is brought to the dense trees and concrete path cutting through the grass-covered site. Flexibility is translated into informal boundaries, level of exposure and openness, and bleed of inside and outside. The concrete shell mimics the path on the site by wrapping out enclosure, while leaving traces of openness for space to flow out and greet the existing site condition. It is a "house" inviting you to come. M y intension is to create a space or an enrivonment which is open and free.

POROUS G /\ P material space movement path UDI, Fall 2011 Daniel Winden Martha Mcquade Dzenita Hadziomerovic
Porous gap is a project focusing on the relationship between material and space. The project has an emphasis on the nature of process, explored in MDF, plaster, and paper. By photographing spatial sequence, I am triggered by the slim space between buildings and other boudaries. The in-between space lies in the gap. In plaster, the heavy solid volume has a strong contrast to the void space. The gap is created through pulling apart the solid. In paper, the planer quality allows the gap to be more porous. By staggering layers, I start to study the space between two planes- inhabitable gaps. The end goal is to design a path connecting the street front to the Cedar Riverside community. My intention is to create a path taking advantage of the linear and planer surface quality. As one move through the path, he experiences the staggered space and receives porous views.

The in between space in the plaster model transforms into the split of solid, running through as a volume of gap. By changing the scale of the gap, the space becomes either inhabitable or formal language. The lighting condition reflects the depth, emphasizing the idea of layering of planer material and spatial porosity.

P()P UP SHOP
iteration Independent Study, Spring 2013 Feifei Zhang/ Max Friedman Martha Mcquade
This project was a self directed study which we had opportunity to collaborate with the Weisman Art Museum. The intention was to design a pop up shop as an extension of the gift shop of WAM. During the process, Max and I were both very interested in what iteration could do. We started with picking sites with specific features and arrived at having a modular system that is suitable for different sites. We were also interested in how you display items. From contrasting flat planes to geometrical solids, we also considered how to make the connection between the displayed to the Weisman. Overall, the pop up shop served as a satellite of the museum. Its white appearance pops up and engage us. Its items are curated similar to an art display.
