TUM SUMMER PAVILLION Munich, Germany | Jun. 2011 | graduation project | emerging technologies Team: Cristopher Martin, Georgina Simon, Matthias Sant’Anna, Vivian Brune
The Summer Pavilion designed at the TU München University aims to explore emerging technologies in a design studio conducted by Charles Walker. Developed from the concept “Underwater”, the project results in a pavilion made up of folded plywood boards which refers to the effect of being submerged to water. Technical solution. The pavilion is made up of thin sheets of plywood bent into shapes of drops that together form larger droplets structuring the installation. Three patterns of repeated drops were created that complete the shape of the pavilion and thereby facilitate the production and assembly, without affecting the aesthetic quality since the repetition is hardly noticeable visually. The form adopted is ¾ of a ball so that all ply wooden boards have the same angle of curvature. The density of the pattern of drops results in a firmly form that sustains itself. The ply wooden boards of the smaller droplets would be joint by strong glue while the larger structurers elements of the pavilion would be riveted.

Underwater effect. The width of 50cm ply wooden boards cause the desired effect of "underwater" by filtering the light that strikes the pavilion and creating different levels of transparency. Another interesting effect is the shading resulting from the structure, which repeats the drawing pattern adopted on the floor. Lights at night enhance the innovative structure of the pavilion.
DESIGN MUSEUM Munich, Germany | Jan. 2012 | graduation project | bim + ecotect analysis Team: Matthias Andrae (Civil Eng.), Vlad Nazirov (Environm. Eng.), Vivian Brune (Architect) Activity: architecture design, Revit model
The proposal for a design new exhibition hall in Munich, Germany, was developed focused on BIM technology and on multidisciplinary work, in a group formed by one architect and civil and environmental engineers. The discipline aimed to develop a complete design with the Revit tool, adding structural analysis and energy performance and comfort since the early phase of the project, so that they can guide for better design solutions. Architecture concept. Inside a quiet garden, the Dichtergardens in Munich midtown, the building adapts to the surroundings being an extension of the garden on its top, respecting the height of the historical buildings next to the site. The clean geometric shape of the building contrasts to the wildness of the area and at the same time preserves the garden space by its green roof cover that reaches the floor level on its lower point, making possible to visitors to experience the complete project.

structure model
Simultaneously to designing the architectural aspects of the building, preliminary structure and energy performance analysis were made and the design process had involvement of both architecture and engineering. The model developed in Revit, was exported to SOFiSTiK software for structural studies and to Ecotect Analysis for insolation, natural lighting and energy performance analysis. The process confirmed if solutions adopted were truly efficient and lead to other adjustments, as the distribution of zenith openings. structure analysis

MUSIC AND FINE ARTS SCHOOL Curitiba, Brazil | March. 2013 | thesis project | cultural
EMBAP, the Music and Fine Arts School of Parana, currently presents unsatisfactory installations that need a renovation to comport the school and all its activities in a single campus. The new proposal aims to foster an innovative, involving and motivating space, a creative atmosphere where art can happen freely and promote interaction both among students of various courses and society. The main concept is to create a great patio in the interior of the lot, to where the project is orientated, a living and creative space inviting foreign public to enter and participate. Program. Activities take place within the suspended blocks over the patio, united by a large glass volume. The patio created works as the core of the project, being an open public space protected by a metal roof composed by opaque and translucent boards, which controls the direct solar incidence in both central patio and east facade.

SALTO DEL GUAIRA WATERFRONT Salto del Guaira, Paraguay | Nov. 2013 | professional work | generativ landscape
Team: Arqbox - Glaucia Silva, Jacksson Depoli, Michelle Schneider, Tiago Vidal, Stephanie Heinrichs, Vivian Brune Activities: master plan design, landscape project (preliminary study to executive project), construction details
On the banks of Parana River, in Salto del Guaira - Paraguay, the proposal aims to better utilize the area close to the river and full of nature, in memory to the Seven Falls that no longer exist due to the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric. Design process. Starting by pointing relevant spots of the glebe, a voronoi diagram was created subdivisions the area in smaller parts, where the uses would be distributed. NURBS curves were created from these control points and generated the paths and connections of the park, like an fabric, connecting the open space to the urban fabric.

CURITIBANO CLUB Curitiba, Brazil | Aug. 2014 | professional work | competition
Team: Arqbox - Glaucia Silva, Jacksson Depoli, Michelle Schneider, Stephanie Heinrichs, Vivian Brune Activities: project concept development and drawings
1st prize on the competition for a new campus for the traditional Curitibano Club, in Curitiba, Brazil. Situated on an elevated part of the city and next to a small woodland, the site had many limitations being the verticalization of the club the best solution. To be built in three fases, the project consists on an initial block for social activities, expanded on the second fase to attend the sports program and finally the addition of a cafe and beauty center. Looking for the most adequate and economical structure, the reinforced concrete was chosen to attend the large span needed for the courts and is exposed as part of the identity of the project. For the involucre, a skin made of textile panels enclose the volume protecting it from solar exposure on East and West sides. Internally, the floors on the social block are wide open to attend diverse possible uses, being flexible for future changes, and are conected through a central void where all the activities are visually conected for a vibrant atmosphere of the club.

REFORESTING THE CITY Chicago, USA | Dec. 2014 | m.sc in architecture | rethink the metropolis Team: Nidhi Desai, Trevor Mauro, Vivian Brune, Zhehan Yang Activities: concept, sketches, plans and diagrams
Being part of the Master of Science in Architecture course at the IIT focused on Rethinking the Metropolis, the project for the South Loop neighborhood in Chicago questions current urbanization process with a new model under the concept of ‘Reforesting the city’. As part of the Master Thesis, the design applys studies on urban (land)scape as infrastructure to guide the process of densification inevitable on nowadays metropolis like Chicago. By bringing back nature to the urban environment, a new balance is created economically, socially and ecologically. The Masterplan proposal integrates both urban and ecological systems, by rethinking the traditional city infrastructure to a new ecological one that supports as much as possible the necessities of a local neighborhood. Linking the urban landscape, buildings and parks, this ecological infrastructure can become the own natural living system of an urban area.

“The problem is no longer posed as the designing of a completely new environment, but rather the rebuilding of what already exists. There is no need for a new Utopia but rather to create a better reality. O.M. Ungers
In an analogy to nature, on a forest its first layer, the forest floor, has the task to provide nutrients and support the trees that growth from it in order to achieve a great canopy on the upper level. On a city the same relation is found where infrastructure consists on the basement for the growth and development of the urban environment. From this concept a new urban model is proposed for the South Loop neighborhood in Chicago, just south of the CBD, one of the most underutilized land that can accommodate the population growth of the metropolis next to its central core. Developing such a large area of land amongst existing towers and historically significant buildings requires a delicate reforestation, in which the use of specific lots are planned based upon a careful consideration of the surrounding urban and ecological environment.
01
Analyzing the current status of the site, the built vs. open spaces (01); public transportation system (02); existing parks and green areas (03); and ‘urban voids’, defined as site opportunities on underutilized lots as parking, empty or abandoned lots and buildings, the framework where the new landscape infrastructure could be placed respecting the existing conditions. The East side, next to Museum Campus and Michigan Lake presents the most developed and dense part of the area, while the West next to Ping Tom Park and around the elevated tracks of the Green Line CTA concentrate most of the area with potential to be repurposed.

The starting point of the project was to connect two of the most important natural resources of Chicago, the riverfront and the lakefront (01). Linking the existing park and green spaces through the identified underutilized lots created a network of open spaces reinforcing the West-East axis on ecological corridors that reduce habitat fragmentation (02). “Increasing the linkage between green areas and ecosystems provides the opportunity for an increase in biodiversity. As an ecosystem gains greater diversity (...) this is further enhanced by increased opportunities to interact and to migrate. K. Yeang 01
The study proposes a new landscape infrastructure as the first step to guide the densification of the South Loop neighborhood, reserving existing parks that are connected in a larger network of open spaces through the site. Together with the infrastructure comes the new dense habitat that is supported by it, by the diverse program it offers on sustainability, small urban farms/ common gardens, sports facilities, cultural spaces beyond the green corridors of vegetation (03). To attend this new population growth, new nodes of public transportation are created to integrate the site better to the city, as well as new connections to the museum park and existing green infrastructure are possible through park bridges.
