A Place For Ritual ARC 201
Professor Rebecca Neccessary Fall 2012 Raleigh, North Carolina
Objective This project was the final project from my first architecture studio. The goal of the project was to design a place for a client (of our choice) to perform their daily ritual with a linear and cubic element. My client was a 28 year old botanist. Her daily ritual began with a shower after waking up. After which she then begins her work outside studying or sketching the plants outside. Other than her garden, she has plants in a planter along the east wall of her room and a roof garden along the top of the linear hall. Around sunset, my client begins her meditation and daily reflection. Once a month, she has a gathering with her close friends. Most of their time is spent on the lower level and in the outdoor garden space. Most of the time, her rituals are are private and spent in the upper levels of her house.

Objective The intent of this project was to allow the students to understand how to apply the urban syntax and culture of a place and incorporate it into our designs. In this case, we went on a class-trip to Charleston before coming back to begin our Museum of the City project. The program needed to include a wall of entry, a wall of scale and meter, a wall of light, a wall of containment, volume of line, volume of center, architectural promenade, courtyards and gardens, and a cistern/well. The site assigned to me was a parking lot that served the church adjacent to it. My design was inspired by the details and experience of moving around charlestion. Some of those details include the small step that is taken upon entering a building or the long narrow alleys that lead to the entrance of a building or the walls and screens that kept people out, but allowed for views into their gardens and courtyards.

Objective The goal of this project was to redesign the Wolfline bus stop on Morrill Drive with a focus on the fundamentals of building systems of architectural design. We were asked to incorporate stereotomic, tectonic, and membrane elements into our projects so that we could understand how they work together structurally. Vivian My design was meant to create a bus stop that would allow for people to sit, lean, or standChiang while waiting for the bus. The “seats” were at three different heights. One for sitting, one for leaning, October and one for using a desk at standing 7th, 2015 height. My stereotomic, tectonic, and membrane materials were concrete, wood and steel, and polycarbonate

Professor Marshall Purnell Spring 2015 Raleigh, North Carolina
Objective This project served as an introductory project designed to allow us; the students focus on the issues of tectonics, expression, circulation, and site. With my partner, we picked a site for our 40,000 sqft Televesion Station with spaces for studios and interview rooms, support for those rooms, administration, and plant operations. We picked the parking lot right next to Downtown Raleigh’s City Market. In addition to the design and structure of the building, we had to consider the mechanical system that best suited the project. We decided on an active chilled beam system to maintain a comfortable indoor climate, and engineered for low energy cooling, heating, and ventilation. The system is quiet with minimal maintenance required. The building uses a steel structure in order to span the large open spaces needed for the studios.

Taiwan Travel Study ARC 589
Professor Robin Abrams Summer 2015 Taipei, Taiwan
Objective During a 3-month trip abroad in Taiwan, I looked at five different residential buildings dating from the late 1700s to early 2000s. The goal of this travel study was to understand the reasoning for the typical Taiwanese style housing and how it has developed over time. Upon comparing the five homes, I found thatall the plans had a centralized public area with the private areas surround it. This makes sense due to extended families being very common in asian cultures, as well as a focus on being family oriented. Objective As part of a 10-week studio, we were asked by the North Carolina Museum of Art to design and build a securable garden shed and small outdoor classroom in the new expansion called the Discovery Garden. The program included a storage area, a covered classroom for 12 to 20 students, and rainwater collection (for watering plants). The structure also served as a gateway for the discovery garden from the amphitheater. Wade Community Park LAR 501

Objective This studio was my first and only landscape studio needed for my landscape minor. The site for our project was located in a mixed use area that included office buildings, shops, restaurants and apartments. The project took part in three phases: Discovery, Exploration, and Designing. Working together with my partner, we analyzed the site and went through a charette to design and test many plans before deciding on our river concept. The river concept that we adopted creates pockets of spaces that allows for exploration throughout the park. There are also opportunities to interact with the water along the path. With our concept, we wanted to connect the adjacent residences to the rest of Raleigh. Both by drawing people to the park, but also through physical paths such as the nearby greenway that is currently not very noticeable.

LAR 501 Project 3: Wade Community Park

Objective This studio project was a semester long project in which we were asked to take everything we learned in the previous four years of our studies and apply it. We were given a choice of three sites to choose from and I chose the site with a fifteen foot grade change as I believed I could utilize it in my library design. The linear volume is meant to contrast with the extreme grade change. My concept was to engage the public on the street level and create more privacy as users move to the upper levels of my building. However, I still wanted users to feel a connection once inside the building.
