PERSONAL STATEMENT

There is beauty in the process.

05

I have learned that architecture is about the process. The process is not only the steps taken to receive your diploma and license, but those long hours spent at your desk. It is that roll of trace paper you went through while the ideas escape your mind and become study models. It is when you learn new techniques, styles, and softwares. Most importantly, it is when you learn the most about yourself and your passion. It can be frustrating, creative, and awakening.

POINTS OF DEPARTURE A NATURAL REGENERATION OF HOUSTON’S LIVING GEMS

06

Project Type // Master plan Location // Houston, Texas Year // 2016 Critic // Peter Zweig & Thom Mayne As drones become a normal entity through the delivery of goods/services/mail, a centralized industry begins to expose itself. The drones make the delivery industry almost obsolete, but at the same time efficient. This disruptive technology will infiltrate all aspects of business and personal reductions, efficiency, and reduction in traffic accidents while at the same time reducing the general cost of delivery of goods. Drones are also a form of toy used by adults for the purposes of sports and entertainment and even professional endeavors. Therefore, “Points of Departure” becomes a location where business, leisure, and profession intersects to become an undulating landscape housing varied interests.

MONTROSE PERFORMANCE HALL

17

Project Type // Performance hall Location // Houston, Texas Year // 2016 Critic // Kevin Story The city of Houston is an internationally popular destination to visit. Houston is the perfect backdrop to hold numerous annual events that make up its richness in culture and community. The neighborhood of Montrose is known for its diverse lifestyles, vibrant street life, and safe haven for writers, artists, and musicians. The Montrose Performance Hall is a symbolic place representing both the city of Houston as a whole and the neighborhood of Montrose, not through an icon, but through the image of the city itself which reflects and resolves, becoming thus a meeting point of urbanity and nature. The Montrose Performance Hall embodies the very idea of a public space: a place for cultural and social gathering and sharing for the community. While the building represents a stage set, with the bayou and city skyline as the backdrop, it is a flexible system with a structural facade allowing the building to become highly porous, open, and permeable. Adaptive to the changing needs of the community in the course of time. To observe this building means to observe the city, the nature surrounding it, and its culture.

HOPE FARM Project Type // Urban farm Location // Houston, Texas Year // 2015 Critic // Susan Rogers

23

Located in the community of Sunnyside in Houston, Texas, the farm engages with its surrounding neighborhood, provides efficient farming space, and welcomes in the community. The four existing large Oak trees are kept on the site to provide shade as well as a point of gathering. The trees create an axis throughout the site that extends outward towards the neighborhood, drawing the user into a community gathering space. The public pathway is highlighted by an open shaded system, leading the user along the precession from the market entrance to the teaching pavilion, and ending at the observation deck looking out onto the wetlands pond. Hope Farm aims to provide the community of the resources for having readily fresh produce and the teachings of where it comes from.

ENERGY EXPLORATORIUM

31

Project Type // Mixed-use Location // Houston, Texas Year // 2014 Critic // Kevin Story The Energy Exploratorium provides not only a place for learning and discovery but a place of gathering within the community. Being that the site is located within Houston’s Energy Corridor, the site for the building is surrounded by energy and fuel companies. Therefore, the building is based upon energy being in motion. The Energy Exploratorium aims to spark creativity and excite students of all ages, young adults, and professionals who want to explore new energy technologies along with the actual building. The form itself is an expression of energy in motion. While approaching the building, it is appeared as if the building itself is unfolding and peeling up from the landscape, drawing the user in and igniting curiosity to want to further explore. These angles enable the user to flow through the spaces in a continuous push, leading them throughout the programs. Once inside, the user is to feel the spatial twist while exploring the exhibition spaces that are located throughout the classrooms on the ground floor. Throughout this experience, the user and the building co-exist in this exertion of energy in motion.

CASA HOUSTON Project Type // Satellite school Location // Madrid, Spain Year // 2016 Critic // Rafael Longoria Team // team of 2

37

Casa Houston is located on the dense street of Calle Fucar in Madrid, Spain. It is a satellite school for the University of Houston College of Architecture and Design. It is a small piece of Houston gently placed within the lively city of Madrid. The locals often say that it does not matter where you are from, “If you’re in Madrid, you’re from Madrid”. Consequently, we want Casa Houston to not impose on the surrounding neighborhood, but blend in and become unified with the city: culturally, aesthetically, and programmatically. Observing the neighborhood from above, there are many special moments of carved away spaces used for courtyards and gardens. Green-space is a very important aspect of Madrid. Madrid’s Retiro Park is said to be the Lungs of the Capital. Its name refers to its function under King Philip II’s rule. Retiro Park is the place from which to escape from the rigors of the court life.

HONEYCOMB Project Type // Digital fabrication Location // Houston, Texas Year // 2016 Critic // Jason Logan & Joshua Robbins

45

The objective was to develop an understanding of the digital processes through the application of research on material production and fabrication. Throughout the course we learned that there are several different techniques that can be applied when creating a single form. With the use of rhinoceros and grasshopper, the concept of the project was to then combine two or more techniques into one object. Then the final result was to be fabricated with materials of our choice. Material selection depended on dexterity, function, and aesthetics.
