Shal SHAL is a mixed-use project, which refurbishing the Shikumen, located in Shanghai, China. Shikumen is one type of historical building with a lot of historical identity. It is a creature that mixed of Western and Chinese culture. Shikumen is only 20% remaining and they are still in danger. The goal of this project is to significantly reduce the living density, create a new living system and lifestyle for new generations, add bathroom, and respect of its own culture while preserving the remaining Shikumen buildings. Shikumen is separated into five parts: streets, gates, alleys, architecture, and courtyard. This project focuses on the alleys and architecture. The new program will include different kinds of living options, such as living, or mixed-use (live and work) units as different options for the consumer. By achieving this goal, three matrixes will be used to create customizable, flexible, and DIYable experience for the future tenants. The alleys are redesigned with the concept of traditional Chinese five elements.

In the street part, designed a small sidewalk for the residents, and created a small green belt with the trees and plants to give the Shikumen more life are the main goals.
The goal of designing the gate is to create a view from the gate that gives a refreshing and attractive scene to make a deep impression to residents and travelers, insitead of original old, messy look with full of clothes hanging on top of the alley.
12
In order to change the view from the gate, one must redesign the alley. Traditional five elements are the major philosophical theory in Chinese history. Five elements are water, wood fire, earth, and metal. In this theory, each element can create another one, also can destroy another one.
Each sub-alley represents one different element. Using the five elements as concepts to design the alleys according to its color representation, texturing, and Fengshui position.

The new program for this site separates it into four sections, which became for options for different type of persona to choose. The ones around the street will be come the mixed-use units, which upstairs is for private use, such as living space, bedrooms, and workout space. The lower level is used for tenants working and social space and kitchen. One community center is located in the center of the site, which exclusively open for the tenants. The community center will have a multi-purpose space on the first level, which can be used for events, movie nights, meetings, and exhibitions. Upstairs will have a small gym and co-working space. Studio and duplex are two living layouts for smaller and bigger families. For all options, tenants can access from both alleys, or from one alley and one street. The circulation created is based on the less is more theory. Keep the main circulation as clean as possible, so that the other program in the space can be open and flexible. Based on different needs, three matrixes will be applied to the program layout. The floor plan is flexible and DIYable. 16

Lobby
Lobby has double height. Playing with ceiling height to give more playful feeling to this environment. By using warm neutral and warm tone color to create positive and welcoming feeling to the lobby, as well as reduce patients and their families’ anxiety and nervousness level. In one research shows pink interior wall can calm people down without creating cool tone color environment; therefore, main color for the wall in lobby is coral pink and beige.

c-hotel C-Hotel is a lobby-renovated project located in Milan, Italy, worked with the hotel owner and Sara Bernardi from MICROmacro. C-Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel, proposing natural and healthy lifestyle. By renovating the lobby, the owner wants to promote their own brand of natural juice; therefore incorporating a juice bar is one of the goals of this project. The design of this boutique hotel is timeless; however, the main problems of this lobby are the circulation and the unused outdoor space. Another main goals is to have flexible circulation and reuse the outdoor space.

Using the same wood flooring to connect the indoor and outdoor space, and bringing the green nature into the lobby area to create more natural, healthy and SPA feeling environment to match the concept of C-Hotel. Although cutting off part of the Kitchen reduced the size of it, it can create more comfortable and flexible circulations.

Check-In System
Hotel Life The modular panel can be turned into the rectangular module for the juice tasting. The juice will be placed in the tube. Before the clients check in the hotel, they can enjoy their time in the garden and taste the healthy juice. If they like any of the juices, they can order some of the juice while they checking in. The juice will be delivered to room every morning. Since the hotel owner family owns organic farm as well, incorporating the green wall, growing spices as outdoor façade. Using Viabizzuno’s catenaria di luce serpentine can flexibly lead the circulation for the clients, as well as creating a relaxing feeling.

Attachable Blocks is a furniture design project, working with architect Niko Koronis. Think of living situation nowadays, especially in Europe, there is at least one piece of transformable furniture in the apartment. Sofa bed is the most common transformable furniture in the world. How transformable sofa beds can have more function and elegance shape are the main problem-solving goals in this project. Clients can buy the basic model first, which is the sofa bed. Then as needed, the tables, tatamis, and tatami holder / side table can all be attached later on.
