BROWNFIELD MASTERPLAN / RESIDENTIAL STUDIO PROJECT UNIVERSIT Y OF PATRAS 2014

Location / Site 1km long brownfield area in Patra’s coast, surrounded by newly constructed roads and the city’s port. The once thriving factories of textile, alcohol, timber and paper industry are now in a state of decay. Proposal The proposal is a complete redevelopment of the postindustrial, 1km long brownfield area, into a large scale residential complex and a park that will provide a much needed public space in the area. The residential building is reminiscent of a Wall that fortifies the city from the contrasting forces of the site. The sea reclaims what was once hers, breaking the existing coastline and flooding the abandoned industrial buildings, connected with platforms and bridges into a leisure park. An elongated pier protrudes into the water, doubling as a marina. C r i t i c A. Spanomaridis

Mas t erplan Evolution of the masterplan based on the site analysis and research. Key ideas to work with where the mirroring created by the reflection of the man-made structures in the sea and the pressure from the infrastructures around the site (road arteries and new port).

La yout The idea of mirroring is further explored in the layout of the housing units. The core horizontally is the apartment interior. On the east side with views to the city and the mountain, is the circulation with perforated metal floor corridors to allow light and air to flow. It’s positioned half a floor lower than the apartment level, to allow for privacy. On the west side with views to the sea is the exterior space of the apartments, with balconies. Windows on both sides allow for ventilation and unobstructed views.

NYMPHAION MEMORIES OF THE SACRED PUBLIC SPACE/MONUMENT DIPLOMA PROJECT UNIVERSIT Y OF PATRAS 2015

Location / Site Patras, Greece Courtyard of St Andrew’s Cathedral and the nearby old church of St Andrew in Patra’s coast (a place of pilgrimage for Christians all over the world) built upon the ancient temple and oracle of Demetra. Proposal A new public place of gathering and learning, which traces the foundations and the history of all the past and present buildings on the site, such as remains of the ancient temple of Demetra, and her holy well that is still used by Christians, roman baths, monasteries, cathedrals, schools and towers. The structure idealises the duality of absence and presence; it is a building that is constructed but also buried. Resembling an archaeological find, a cross section, it is a spatial embodiment of the katabasis, a descent either to the city’s layers over the centuries or to the personal history of oneself. At the center of the structure, on it’s deepest point, the pond, formed from the water of the holy well, marks the climax of the procession. C r i t i c A. Spanomaridis

Geometry The 87x15m structure is conforming to a strict 3x3 grid and its subdivisions that dictates the position and height of walls, arcs and steps.

To p o g r a p hy & H i s t o r y The history of the site and it’s different uses throughout the centuries and under different rulers, was throroughly investigated through various books and interviews with archaelogists. A timeline of the buildings that existed, their relationship with the expanding (or receeding) city of Patras, and their essence captured in collages, was designed to portray the complexity of the site and the necessity to dig inwards to create a new urban placemaking.

MEMORY L ANE URBAN INTERVENTION STUDIO PROJECT UNIVERSIT Y OF PATRAS 2014

Brief The fastest way to reach the port from the city’s castle is through a straight line. This proposal is combining segments of various routes in a zig-zag line, with 6 strategic interventions in the cityscape, in an attempt to recognise and document fleeting images of the city’s stories, and those of it’s inhabitants. C r i t i c A. Spanomaridis

Urban Inter vent ions Collage of the 6 interventions, documenting their nature 1. Ex Municipal Hospital New openings like fractures on the listed building fabric of Patras Cultural Centre and exhibition space, to create a new relationship with the city to frame views of the surroundings. 2. Agiou Nikolaou Stairs Viewing platform on the side of the grand staircase which connects Old city centre (castle) with the new city centre (main square and old port). 3. Vlatero neighbourhood New steps and public gathering spaces formed on the cliff, cutting through the stepped private courtyards of the medieval neighborhoud. 4. Kanakari Street Vacant/unused spaces behind the apartment blocks which can be accessed from the high street through narrow alleyways are repurposed as gathering spaces for the youth. 5. King George A’ Square Raised walkway acting as centre stage cutting through the main public square, opposite the listed theater. 6. Molos, Old port’s pier Landmark by the pier, with new floating piers, enhancing the elongated nature. Section Long section through the road connecting the castle & port

Proposal Situated on the Esplanade, the temporary Visitors Center overlooks the construction site of the SNFCC complex, that upon completion will house the Greek National Library, Opera, and a 210,000sq.m Park. The Visitors Center offers the public the opportunity to see the worksite up close and learn about the technical details of the construction and the project, as well as the SNFCC’s mission. At the same time, it offers a snapshot of what is to come at the SNFCC, through exhibitions and activities for both adults and children. The steel framed pavilion is constructed primarily from H sections and square hollow tubes. The goal was to accentuate the notion of temporality and allow the building to float above the ground plane, leaving as much of the esplanade intact as possible. The axes of the esplanade and the orientation to the site dictate the design. The angular contortion introduces two triangular semienclosed outdoor spaces that act as an intermediary between interior and exterior on the pavilion’s long sides. On the esplanade side, the fragmented trapezoidal clad façade folds inwards and invites to enter the building, referencing a slit on the construction site fences. On the other hand, the rear façade opens entirely at the construction site, through floor to ceiling glass panels and door and the triangular balcony. Inside the space is experienced as a sequence of different sensory activities, dedicated to each of the SNFCC’s buildings, on a peripheral route circling the main rectangular area that connects them, the ‘Agora’. The fluid movement of the visitor through the building enhances the learning experience.

DONHEAD HOUSE HIGH END RESIDENTIAL GRADE 2 LISTED BUIDING P. JOSEPH VALUE ÂŁ 7M - ONGOING

Location / Site Donhead St Andrew, Whiltshire 1600m2 Grade 2 listed country house spanning over 5 storeys (including basement and attic). Originally built in early 18th century as the village rectory, it has since undergone multiple conversions and extensions to house a hospital, a kindergarden, Brewer’s Society training centre and private dwelling. Brief Extensive restoration of a 1600m2 Grade II listed building to become a home that functions for a social and modern family life. Main Contractor Ken Biggs. My role Design development, tender drawings, detailing, coordination, site supervision. Challenges The disconnection between the south front and back of house (which is half a level lower), makes for a labyrintine circulation and no clear main staircase to connect all levels. The beauty of each architectural period is marred by the imposition of another crashing into it or layered on top. The intention is to conserve and and enhance the historic fabric while bringing new order through careful intervention and extension.

Chef ’s Kitc hen & Larder The Chef’s kitchen is re-imagined as having once been the engine room of the C18th Queen Anne House, before the multiple conversions and extentions. The new interior walls and the architecture elements are conceived as in-keeping and designed rigorously with respect to correct proportion and detail. The classic utility aesthetic calls for simple utalitarian finishes, such as white glazed brick walls and flagstone floors and steps, which are set out to form arched openings and vaulted ceilings.

Secondary Staircase The original secondary staircase of the house, constructed in early C20th, connected only the South enfilade rooms of the Ground and First Floor with the landings and hallways behind them which sit half a level lower. The flights and landings are relocated and redesigned in order to connect all the levels up to the Second Floor guest bedrooms and to restore the vaulted ceiling of the hallway traversing the ground floor east to west ground. In order to make the First Floor landing wide and inhabited, (more of a library room than a hallway), a wall is demolished and a second skin of crisp and contemporary floor to ceiling bookshelves are wrapped around the walls. Armchairs and coffee tables provide another spot in the house to take up residency with a book on an inclement day.

HUMBLE GRAPE LIVERPOOL STR.

RETAIL / HOSPITALIT Y TRELLIK DESIGN STUDIO VALUE £150K - COMPLETED

Location / Site 8 Devonshire Row, London 80m2 ground floor & basement unit with a Grade 2 listed 16th century brick wall at the rear of the basement, once part of Fisher’s Folly, a Tudor-era mansion. Brief Interior fit out of a 45-cover wine bar with an open kitchen for lunch, post-work drinks, dinner, and wine tasting events, offering over 400 labels to drink in or take home. Client asked for layout flexibility, storage, combined retail and seating area and furniture made from reclaimed winemaking materials. Main Contractor HMT Building Services My role Run the whole project from concept to completion under the director’s supervision. Challenges Thinking out of the box in order to maximise the covers and the storage area and fit a small kitchen. Liaising with Planning officers and English Heritage to identify the extent of the building that is Grade 2 listed. Detailed survey exposed water ingress and defective steels in the back of house area vaults. New structural columns, pad foundations and beams were constructed and the layout was reconfigured to allow for 2no toilets, access & maintenance of services and storage space.

GF - Bar & Retail Area Combining different functions (shopfront, retail, dining, bar, commercial kitchen) in just the 35m2 of the ground floor, while letting the space look inviting and not crumped from the street, proved quite a challenge. Being constrained by the existing fabric of the building, the bar & kitchen area were pushed at the rear, and used the existing brick column to separate them visually. Either side of the wall was lined with bespoke mild steel and cork retail shelves, with seating nooks. The chimney breast was utilised as the “winemakers’ wall” where photos and stories about the winemakers are exhibited. In order to create an inviting shopfront and maximize seating, we designed a high table with cork top and wine bottle display below, and a hanging lighting & bottle display unit above.

Retail Area The first space one encounters as they walk in, the retail area is designed to immerse the customer to the full variety of wine offered in store. The mild steel and cork wine display lines up all 3 walls, leaving openings to the bar area and the dining area, incorporating the cashier desk and wine fridge into the design. Sustainability and wine making tradition has infused the design (multiple uses of cork, winemaker’s display wall, menu from recycled crushed grapes). The shopfront table/display with cork top allows for wine tasting.

Bar Area Adjascent to the retail area and seperated by a shelving unit which doubles as a seating bench, the bar area has views to the outside and to the lower conservatory dining area at the back though openings in the wall. The main focus is the bar with green Bijmat tiles, and reclaimed timber top, and the shopfront hanging bottle display, with mild steel frame and cork.

Dining Area At the back, a few steps lower than the main space, one walks into the conservatory style dining area. Attention is drawn to the full length green banquette against the rear wall, underneath the rooflight. The material palette accentuates the conservatory feeling with concrete floor tiles, whitewashed T&G wall cladding, exposed skim plastered walls, to bring a raw an earthy feel, rattan chairs and hanging plants.

Fire-dome cooking area After a client’s trip to Argentina, where they were introduced to ‘Asador Criollo’ on the open fire pit, the idea of creating a fire dome cooking area in the middle of the restaurant started materialising. Taking centre stage in the raised floor restaurant area, it’s creating a warm glow reminiscent of a camp fire and bringing food theater to the spatial experience. Various forms and finishes were tested during tender stage. Bespoke lava tiles with rounded corners and metal mesh for cladding the ventilated ceiling were selected.
