INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this document is to compile the academic works developed during the last 6 years at the Faculty of Architecture of the Pontifical Bolivarian University. This seeks to expose in an orderly and synthetic way the development of each project, thus demonstrating the student’s position on architecture, people and the context in which it is located. In the course of these 10 semesters, it was learned that architecture can not be seen as an isolated piece that can be located anywhere, but that it is made in principle to belong to a whole, to a context, to users and must respond at different scales. The main goal of the architecture is to give shelter to man and provide good living conditions for him to have a full development of his life. Architects build for the people. A space without users does not make sense, the coexistence, the belonging and the appropriation of the spaces must be the architect’s objective. Throughout the portfolio, the training process will be evident in different areas of the architecture such as: Urban planning, construction, landscaping, sustainability and the use of computer tools for the collection of information.

C 3. CURRICULUM VITAE

10

I am an architect of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (Medellín), interested in construction, bioclimatic, sustainability, interior design and research as an applicable tool to improve processes in architecture. I was part of the LEET seedbed (Laboratory of Technical Studies and Experimentation) which allowed me the acquisition of knowledge and investigative development in topics of sustainable construction. I believe that architecture is a methodical profession, where the order and analysis of each factor during the development of the project is important, since it is fundamental to understand that architecture transcends when we give human beings a space with which they feel comfortable, safe and can be himself; In addition, our designs must be part of a place that foment a multi-scale relationship with the context. I consider myself a person with high responsibility, discipline, honesty and humility. I have the ability to acquire new challenges, skills for teamwork, communication skills, a high level of English (B2) and good use of computer tools.

CURRICULAR STRUCTURE l Fa UPB

The Curricular Structure conceives the proposal of an integrated curriculum with base in the disciplinary, curricular and pedagogic referents, consigned in the Institutional Project (PI). This proposal supports itself in the Formation Cycles - Basic Institutional Cycle, Basic Disciplinary Cycle, Professional Cycle, and Integration Cycle -, and on the thematic Areas of the Architecture: Projects, Technology, History and Theory, Urbanism, Representation, and Research. For these instances (Cycles and Areas) the formation main objectives and the learning goals are defined respectively. They become explicit interms of the general competences that should be acquired and completed in each academic instance, and that will be evaluated in the Thresholds of Verification.

Formative cycles The UPB has defined - on the Institutional Educative Project [1] - a guideline for the curricular structure of its entire undergraduate Programs, by formative Cycles. In order to define the basic structure and general formative proposals by Cycles, the Program takes it as a reference: Basic Institutional Cycle corresponds to the development of the identity, the mission and the vision of the University, and to the component of the humanist formation. This is a transversal cycle that has presence in each one of the other cycles and it complements the competences of performance foreseen for each one of them. Basic Disciplinary Cycle develops the foundations of the discipline of the architect and the acquisition of abilities for the understanding and the conception of the space; the language of representation and communication of the Architecture; the conceptual, procedural foundations and of control of the built fact; the norms in the city and the territory, in the different scales and levels of urban intervention; the understanding of the relationship of the architectural project with the context, and the understanding of the theoretical foundations that allow the approach to the disciplinary specificity. Professional Cycle defines the professional cores and their emphasis for each of the disciplinary Areas: competent management of the means of representation to interpret, to conceive and to

14

communicate the architectural and urban projects; understanding and application of the different technical, aesthetic, environmental factors and of administration that intervene in the architectural project; knowledge, understanding and application of the concepts related with the habitat, the sustainability; understanding and critical position in front of the aesthetic dimension of the city and the contemporary housing; knowledge of an autonomous of designing, and awareness of the social commitment of the profession. In the last two semesters (9° and 10°), this cycle verifies the Professional Practice’s achievement of practical competences (9°), and diversifies the formation emphasis beginning from the experiences of the Graduate Projects (10°), of the Investigation and of the Optional and Elective subjects. Integration Cycle is an optative Cycle that links the under graduate studies with the emphasis research lines offered by Post graduate Programs of the School, by other Post graduate Programs in the University, or by other High Education institutions.

P 6. PROJECTS AREA

16

The Project Area is in the workshop, the academic stage for the integration and development of knowledge and methodologies about architectural projects. The workshop seeks the student to understand the architecture as a cultural and social project, from a human, technical, urban perspective, and proyectual defined through the study and development of architectural proposals, own methods and strategies proyectual approach. The area about student knowledge and application of systems of representation as a basis for the approach, understanding and solving the problem of architecture, communication and expression of the qualities and others inherent in space conditions and the archetypical project definition. In the project design it allows interdisciplinarity between program areas calling for History and Theory as a synthesis of humanist thought and means to support the guiding idea of the project; Urban Development and the collective commitment to the city; and Technology as a determinant of the viability and the material conditions of the proposal.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCCIÓN

Quality social housing in Moravia is a myth for its inhabitants. The vulnerable population in this sector of the city requires precise and puntual interventions that recognize their forms of living from the social, cultural, economic, natural and physical spatial point of view, thus generating more inclusive and satisfied communities.

From Moravia’s analysis work and continuous work with the “Moravita” population in the first half of the year in the research practice developed with the Technical University of Berlin, a proposal for social housing is developed individually in the two possible lots of intervention by the Medellín City Hall: Mamachila (Lot 1) and La Asfaltadora (Lot 2), both with different characteristics due to their location within Moravia. The proposals for social housing have the conceptual parameters that allow the development of life in family and community.

CONCEPTUAL BASIS l SOPORTES CONCEPTUALES

SOCIAL HOUSING: A new way of inhabit Social housing is a type of real state in which housing is in the hands of a governmental authority that can be central or local. Social housing is a global term that refers to rental housing (rent) in charge and owned by the state, a nonprofit organization, or a combination of both, in general with the objective of providing affordable housing. Although the common goal of public housing is to provide affordable housing, the details, terminology, definitions of poverty and other criteria in differents places have variations. It is of public knowledge that social housing does not have the adequate conditions of habitability in Colom-

bia and other latin america countries, where a person or family nucleus can develop in a healthy and freely way. This problem restricts the habitat and starts to have repercussions on the identity and health of the communities. In order to rethink the way in which social housing is made beyond an economic gain, it is necessary to know how the communities that will be beneficiaries of these kind of projects occupied the space, carrying out the optimization of architectural processes without leaving the user aside.

PRACTICAL STAGE - VISIT TO THE PLACE l VISITA AL LUGAR Moravia is a neighborhood located in the 4th commune in the eastern central zone of the city of MedellĂn, Colombia. This neighborhood has been stigmatized and discriminated for a long time due to its security problems, violence, forced displacement and waste management; However, the population has managed to get ahead and have generated a whole network of support, allowing Moravia to be almost a small city within another. Despite being a self-sufficient community, the need to be recognized by the rest of the city and its governments as a culturally and economically rich neighborhood is always present. During the visit to the place, there were problems with which the inhabitants are already accustomed to live, but in the same way there are opportunities to improve and solve problems without losing the essence of the neighborhood.

PRACTICAL STAGE - DIAGNOSIS AND PROPOSAL l DIAGNÓTICO Y PROPUESTA

NATURAL COMPONENT

PROBLEMATICS AND OPPORTUNITIES IDENTIFICATION

The natural component of a territory is made up of topography, vegetation types, hydrology, fauna and climate. The mixture of these elements in one place creates a series of processes that generate impacts on the daily lives of those who inhabit that place.

Moravia has great problems in this area, such as the lack of trees in the public space, generating heat islands. Regarding this, it is not obvious a green connection system or that there is any plan that integrates vegetation. Another problem is the high pollution due to unregulated recycling work and the lack of environmental education.

These impacts can be positive if all the elements of the component are in equilibrium, but when some of these are altered by human “development”, the balance is lost and elements such as vegetation and water sources are the first to be harmed and this is the result of the lack or lack of planning of human settlements. Unfortunately, Moravia is an informal neighborhood consolidated in an area with a natural imbalance.

According to the problems, opotunidades can be identified, such as the regularization of recycling and waste management, as well as the development of natural plans that involve the inhabitants, such as reforestation near water sources and the use of vegetation in the public space.

PHYSICAL-SPATIAL COMPONENT

PROBLEMATICS AND OPPORTUNITIES IDENTIFICATION

The physical-spatial component of a territory is made up of the road network, the morphology of the settlements, the equipment and the land uses. The mixture of these elements in one place creates a series of processes that generate impacts on the daily lives of those who inhabit that place.

Moravia has great problems in this area, such as the lack of space for pedestrians which puts people’s lives in constant danger, the lack of facilities and meeting points that provide leisure and interaction between residents. In addition, the bad mix of uses degenran some areas of the neighborhood.

The “development” of all the elements of the component are related to the natural component, since this is the base on which it is built, that is why when there is not a good planning and reading of the territory, there will be a problem of accessibility, lack of basic services, among others. Unfortunately, Moravia is an informal neighborhood consolidated in an area with a physical-spatial imbalance, where some areas are more affected than others.

According to the problems, opportunities can be identified such as the promotion of connections between areas such as the Tropical Oasis with the rest of the neighborhood, creating more public spaces in residual spaces of the neighborhood, promoting new facilities for the cultural and sports development of the community and improve the conditions of the workspaces (Recycler) that are an economic source of great importance.

COMPONENTE SOCIO-CULTURAL

PROBLEMATICS AND OPPORTUNITIES IDENTIFICATION

The socio-cultural component of a territory is made up of all the dynamics and activities carried out by people making their own place. The mixture of these elements in one place creates a series of processes that generate impacts on the daily lives of those who inhabit that place.

Moravia has great problems in this area, such as the bad mix of uses, which sometimes harms the interaction of people, the problem of pests and bad smells due to the inadequate adaptation of spaces for work and production, denial consttanet to the pedestrian and the dalta of spaces for learning.

All the customs and habits of people, are passed from generation to generation, creating a varied landscape cutural, since as time passes, this landscape is enriched or in some cases it can be blurred by reasons of violence or lack of identity of the people who inhabit the territory. This component is about people and their approach to the place.

According to the problems, opportunities can be identified such as planning a mix of healthy uses by the municipality, events that promote the relationship between work, production and learning, the use of public space for neighborhood activities that promote community growth. and finally improve the perception of the neighborhood in the challenge of the city.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCCIÓN

In all the cities it is necessary that the professionals of the architecture, the urbanism and the governors, know at first hand the reality in which the city is built and to recognize the ways of inhabiting the people and how they are so important in the built environment.

It is for this reason that from the research practice the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana together with students from the Technical University of Berlin, a fieldwork, research and analysis of the different dynamics was carried out in the Moravia neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia. This sector of the city is a strategic point in different aspects, but its antecedents have made it vulnerable and discriminated by the city itself. To get to know the “Moravita” population from the inside, an urban intervention was carried out that allowed space improvements and, most importantly, improved the quality of life of its inhabitants.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCCIÓN

The hybrid building is characterized by the diversity of programs, it seeks a great variety of relationships between the different users that inhabit it and transit, it moves between the intimacy of private life and the sociability of public life, being open to the city, permeable and continuous during the day.

The relation between form and function in a hybrid building may be implicit or explicit, and thus may tend to fragmentation or integration. The mixture of uses is a part of the general processes of hybridization, so it can be compared to an organism with multiple interconnected programs prepared to host as many predicted activities as the unexpected activities of the city. The projection of a hybrid can be applied strategies of urban composition such as perspective, insertion in the plot, dialogue with other buildings and the relationship with public space and landscape.

CONCEPTUAL BASIS l SOPORTES CONCEPTUALES

HYBRID BUILDING: An evolutionary concept The hybrid building, a relatively new concept, in which intimate, unexpected and unpredictable relationships are sought, fosters coexistence with one another, and is aware that unscheduled situations are key to their own future. The hybrid shows its many facets and its own personality (K, 2017). From the previous one, it is understood that diverse public and private relations can coexist in the same space if they have to be disturbed by each other. This type of building can be classified into 3 subcategories that Carlos Aparasi calls as follows:

1. Program: The mix of uses is a feedback system that favors those weaker activities so that all parties benefit. 2. Density: Hybrid buildings should be located in dense environments and with limitations for land occupation. 3. Scale: Hybrid buildings are usually supe buildings, mega structures located in supe apples or buildings-city. “(“ HYBRID BUILDINGS, new ways of living in the XXI century “, 2017).

The architectures stand out to be symbols of identity in the city or on the contrary they give way and serve as a stage for signs already existing in it.

The structuring of these spaces are important because we can hierarchize the uses and transitions from the public to the private.

It is important that hybrid buildings have meeting spaces in their environment to be able to weave the relationship of the building with the inhabitant.

The architecture complements and shapes the city’s blocks, according to its context, responding to various interests.

Transition spaces are fundamental because they allow spatial variation in the building and function as a filter and point of connection with the exterior.

PRACTICAL STAGE - VISIT TO THE PLACE l VISITA AL LUGAR Belén las Palmas is a neighborhood located in the 16th commune in the western central zone of the city of Medellín, Colombia. This neighborhood is full of contrasts in terms of land uses and the people who inhabit or pass through the sector. These constrastes between residensial and commerce-services and all types of users are very marked by the arterial roads (Avenida 80 and Carrera 30) that cross the neighborhood; in addition, being its location in a central area of the city. Despite being a strategic point for the operation of various activities and dynamics, Belén las Palmas lacks spaces or projects that not only serve the sector, but also serve the city and become a milestone for it. For this reason, it is necessary data that allow strengthening the area through the healthy mix of uses.

This cultural space is designed so that the gallery area can be adapted to the different exhibitions or activities (Private, neighborhood and urban) according to its theme. On the other hand, the hanging exhibition is for ephemeral works that can be observed by means of the route in the spiral staircases, which ends in a terrace with complementary activities. CONCLUTION

CONCLUSIÓN

It is concluded after the process carried out during the semester, that the development of a hybrid building requires a complete understanding of the dynamics around it, in order to define what uses to mix within the project, the users, schedules and character of the building.

The teaching group showed how to approach a project with a thesis, an antithesis and a result of the previous two, which allowed to rescue the elements that best defined the building, its environment, its respective program and users. Learn to relate elements to different scales and characters (Private, semi-public and public) very important.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCCIÓN

The development of three exercises (Patio, pavilion and building in height) during the semester, allowed to have theoretical and practical bases on how to approach a project from another perspective, in this case from elements that are themselves space organizers. The conceptualization and execution of each of these key concepts is related to the reading of the place to intervene and how the program gives physical characteristics to these elements.

The exercise on the design of an kindergarten from the patio, even allowed to give a program or function to each one, according to the needs of the children and their ages; In addition, in terms of the morphology of the place, the patios have always been configurators of spaces in the paisa culture, for this reason the project is mimicked in its context making the community feel part of the neighborhood and take ownership of it thanks to their constant visual relationships with the environment.

CONCEPTUAL BASIS l SOPORTES CONCEPTUALES

THE PATIO: Space configurator element The patio has the capacity to order and relate the different parts of the building. These courtyards are before a system of composition, a mechanism that allows to relate the different parts of a room. By thus understanding the patio, it becomes the compositional medium that allows adding, tracing or making an independent, an initial element where the shape is born. “The patio is associated with the concave and internalized, the construction of an enclosure and the zenith opening (...) is a room without a roof. It is usually a central, nuclear space, to which the other rooms discharge and where the relationship between all of them is established. The house, through the patio, is related to the exterior by means of a vertical axis that links the earth and the sky “. (Carles Martis Arís)

“The patio as a way of living, as a system, can be defined as a type, if you will, even when it is something more than that: it is a systematic and versatile archetype, capable of sheltering a large number of uses, forms, sizes, styles and different characteristics. Linked in its birth to the warm and sunny climates typical of the lands of ancient civilizations, already in them reached a very diverse condition that went from modest housing to the palace and that invaded the most diverse uses. “(Martínez, 2017). From the previous quotes we understand that the patio as an architectural typology is used from homes as in public and private buildings, in which, the identity given to it is free, and varies depending on the character of each project.

PRACTICAL STAGE - VISIT TO THE PLACE l VISITA AL LUGAR The neighborhood around Cerro la Asomadera is located in the 9th commune in the eastern central zone of the city of MedellĂn, Colombia. This sector is very residential with a mixture of formal and informal trade in some homes, which means that there are constant activities and dynamics in the public space. One of the main users of the place is the children, who go out to play and recreate themselves, despite the fact that there is an official playground. The accessibility to the place is a little complicated due to its location in the high part of the hill, but at the same time privileged by the visuals and the contrasts between the natural and the built. In the neighborhood you see the opportunity to create a space for children, where they learn, develop their skills and can explore to and through the resources in the environment, thus taking care of their integrity.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCCIÓN

In the intervention of the landscape it is necessary to identify, know and analyze the factors of the natural, physical-spatial and socio-cultural component that make up the territories and make them unique and particular. This allows the interventions to be much more accurate and people feel them as part of their environment.

In this workshop a fieldwork, research and analysis of the corregimiento of San Antonio de Prado in Medellin, Colombia. The interventions carried out have a database from the macro to the micro scale, in order to generate connections and proposals that integrate the ideas and improve the problems identified in the previous analysis. It is very important to recognize the landscape on which you are going to work and also the way in which you are going to intervene, since the objetive is avoid losing the characteristics that conforms the territory identity.

Landscape architecture is the discipline that is responsible for solving the habitability of open space, either in the near to man or in the organization of a region, seeking to balance natural systems with humans. The landscape architect is the professional who plans, designs and builds open spaces as part of the natural and human system, with a responsible, inclusive and meaningful attitude towards the environment, society and culture.

PRACTICAL STAGE - VISIT TO THE PLACE l VISITA AL LUGAR The rural zone of San Antonio de Prado is located towards the south west of the city of MedellĂn, Colombia. It is characterized by its agricultural activities, although it is very close to the city and has good accessibility, there is still an important cape influence. In the municipal seat there is a contrast between the built as there are very consolidated and regular areas that have been recent interventions by the mayor, but in other areas the topographic condition has created an informal settlement, with different problems. In general, there is a shortage of public space for the interaction of people; In addition, the rural area has great potential to mix tourism, work and production, rescuing customs and emblematic areas of the rural zone. Also, it is necessary to improve the road system and propose alternative mobility.

NATURAL COMPONENT

INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

The natural component of a territory is made up of topography, vegetation types, hydrology, fauna and climate. The mixture of these elements in one place creates a series of processes that generate impacts on the daily lives of those who inhabit that place.

Strategies are proposed that have as structuring the vegetation and the water, applied according to the problems, opportunities and necessity of the area, looking for a planned solution and a systematic operation of the same.

It is proposed an edge protection ring with ecological potential, the consolidation of the transition edge between areas of productivity and protection areas, edges of ravine and road axes relevant as green corridors of conestivity and internal subdivision that improve the animal and human habitat, the expansion and consolidation of areas of agricultural productivity with emphasis on coffee and plantain and corridors of greater environmental and functional importance.

Strategy 1

Strategy 2

Some of the proposals are: Generate wetlands in areas of flood risk, create containment zones that prevent the development of high risk areas by mass movement, protect the expansion area with educational equipment, create productive farms to generate employment, unite the 2 centralities of the corregimiento to aprtir of alternative routes, generate retreats around the La Manguala creek, create two new centralities in areas opposite to those already existing, and generate distention points in the centralities to improve the flow of public and private transport.

SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPONENT

INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

The socio-cultural component of a territory is made up of all the dynamics and activities carried out by people making their own place. The mixture of these elements in one place creates a series of processes that generate impacts on the daily lives of those who inhabit that place.

The study by layers means that the behavior and zoning of the activities carried out by the inhabitants is clearly understood. The previous analysis reveals what the population is like and what its practices and customs generated over time are.

All the customs and habits of people, are passed from generation to generation, creating a varied landscape cutural, since as time passes, this landscape is enriched or in some cases it can be blurred by reasons of violence or lack of identity of the people who inhabit the territory. This component is about people and their approach to the place.

Consolidate the main and secondary multipurpose roads, disperse the saturated uses that are concentrated in the main park, promote silcoagriculture and tourism, conserve the PasajĂstic heritage, develop activities in the expansion area that connect with the multipurpose corridors, propose a new centrality in the expansion area and take advantage of and promote the disused land with educational institutions to preserve traditional activities.

The intervention point assigned in the master plan is number 10. In the rural area, where the main natural element with which one will work is the La ARENERA stream.

The proposal is governed by two very important elements of the corregimiento: The culture and the environmental component, since the point of intervention is in the rural area.

The points of activities and routes are thought for different users, bucando this way the interaction and constant integration of all the community.

PHASE 1 l Construction

PHASE 2 l Construction

In the first phase of construction, the whole vegetable part is made. In the landscape of the corregimiento vegetation is very important, that is why it is looking to recover spices in the proposal; in addition to providing aesthetics and characteristic smells.

In the second phase, the main route of the linear parcel with its respective rooms is built. The intention of this is to have an approach to this rural area, its flora and fauna.

PHASE 3 l Construction

In the third phase, the interactive points are constructed. They are some deviations from the main route and have a subject according to the type of crops that you have nearby; also have a few looks thanks to its location in high areas.

PHASE 4 l Construction

In the fourth phase the intervention is carried out in the body of water (Quebrada la Arenera), where natural pools are made with free areas of their environment and some equipment points so that people can perform different activities.

CONCLUTION

CONCLUSIÓN

It is concluded after the process carried out during the semester, that the landscape is not only the vegetal component but also the constructed part and obviously the people that inhabit a territory. The analytical capacity of many factors that converge in the same territory was reinforced and in the same way we learned to synthesize the most relevant information for the intervention.

The docent group showed how to approach a project either from public space or a building from a much wider perspective, handling macro, medium and micro scales, understanding that what happens in each directly affects the other.
