Having your portrait taken used to be something that everyone did. It was that one lasting memory that got passed down from generation to generation. Now we take snaps and keep them on our computer or phone. We never print them, never frame them, and there’s always one person missing from the photograph - the family member behind the camera. It’s time to EXIST in beautiful photographs for everyone to cherish and enjoy.

Contemporary family portraiture is all about celebrating the uniqueness of your family. Taken in a location that’s ‘your place’. It could be the family home, farm, or park where you always walk the dog. Mixing things up using props that are significant to you can be fun too. Your old sofa or antique bed outside in the long grass that used to belong to Granny, a fun tea party on the lawn or some other whimsical theme that suits your family.

It was traditional to keep hand written journals of one’s everyday life. Today there doesn’t seem to be time to do even that. Our memories fade pretty quickly and sometimes its hard to remember what we did last week let alone last year. It’s important we record some of those memories, especially for our children.

There are few people in life that we truly share everything with. Our closest family and maybe our very dearest friends. They’re relationships that we often take for granted. Sometimes we don’t know the true value of a what we have until someone is no longer with us and our memories have started to fade and we wish that we had taken the time to celebrate life together more; captured more photographs of everyone together.

Think about what you would grab first if you had a house fire? I know I would want to grab the entire china cabinet, the children’s framed artwork and of course the family photographs. A client I recently spent some time with had her country home burn down. Some albums were able to be rescued but everything that was digital and on the computer was lost. They have no record of their family for about 10 years. It’s a huge loss and one that if they’d had professional photographs taken during that time they may have been able to replace with new artwork for their new house’s walls.

It’s a sad fact that life is actually very short. Fatalities happen when we’re least expecting them and if we haven’t taken the time to record our family life in pictures and stories it’s lost forever. We don’t get a second opportunity for a re-do.

You’ve just got to make a date and make it happen. Celebrate your family while you still can.

Creating birthday parties or special occasions for our children, parents, friends, or for ourselves, is a lot of hard work and often after the event there’s only crumbs and the odd balloon left as a record of the moment. Even getting the opportunity to take a simple snap can be difficult when you’re the host.

It’s easy to miss the special moments when you’re busy orgainising the drinks or games and you’re definitely

never in any images. It can appear like you weren’t even there. This needs to change. As we get older one of the things we look back on with great fondness are those childhood birthday parties in particular. They didn’t have to be spectacular, it was just that someone had made the effort to make an afternoon or whole day special just for us, usually our Mum’s. Let’s make sure she is in the photographs too, not behind the camera or in the kitchen.

Q & A

How far will you travel to take my photographs?

As far as you want me to! I travel all over NZ to complete photographic shoots, and international shoots are also an option. There are no travel charges for travel within the Timaru district, but anywhere beyond that will incur standard travel charges.

What about locations for our photographs?

Depending on what type of shoot you have, will depend on the location. If it’s a whimsical inspired shoot in the outdoors then it could be anywhere in the Timaru area, otherwise my portrait sessions are done in my studio in TImaru.

I feel awkward in front of the camera...

Most people do, so you are not alone. You don’t need to worry because I will guide you through posing so that you look natural and bring out your best features.

Oh no, I have a pimple, can you get rid of it?

Absolutely, and I do so regularly for clients.

When will my photos be ready?

It depends on what you order, with the likes of albums taking longer but initial viewing with an online gallery should be within 1-2 weeks of your shoot.

Do you take both black and white and colour photographs?

All photos are initially taken in colour but I select images in post production that I think would suit being black and white and your final gallery will have a selection of both.

BEHIND THE CAMERA

Viv has been a professional photographer for over 20 years working across many different genres but her passion has always been portraiture. At twenty her very first photographic boss suggested she should go and do portraiture full time, but it took Viv a while to find that out for herself. Since 2010 she has had her own studio specialising in contemporary style portraits.

Viv is also a graphic designer which brings a strong design aesthetic to her portrait work. And, of course it’s great for making albums and large pieces of wall art.

Awards, Quals & Memberships

Viv has qualifications in both disciplines and she was an Accredited member of the NZIPP. Viv has won a number of competitions and awards over the years and most recently Silver and Bronze’s with the NZIPP’s Iris Awards.

Photography is a love Viv’s had since she was small with her Grandparents giving her, her first camera when she was only 12 years old; a passion that has run in the family for nearly 100 years!
