ou are beautiful

- it’s a sentiment meant to each and every one of our new readers...and we hope that this launch issue of VIYA Beautiful, sister title to VIYA, will help you achieve the looks you always dreamt of. As an exclusive Asian bridal beauty magazine in the UK, we’re determined to be the best at what we do. Just like with our main magazine, VIYA, we aim to please with a mix of features designed to inspire. In this special issue, we concentrate on the bride’s beauty hit-list: from perfect skin to must-have hairstyles, the latest looks, products, advice and more. For inspiration and comparison, we present the work of experienced make-up artists and hairstylists, as well as that of younger, more daring trend-setters. Mughal Muses on p116 is exceptionally regal, while Abida Begum on p134 is cool and contemporary. We have something to suit every bride-in-the-making. Turn to p86 for in-depth features on the perfect photo-finish foundation, while an exclusive look at Hollywood-style laser facials is a compelling read on p70. Beauty, of course, is an exciting and thriving business and for those of you keen to explore further, you may be interested in our handy guide, the exclusive Viya M.U.A Section in association with Zaiba Khan, p175. We know that every bride is unique and wants to look her best on that special day. We hope that VIYA Beautiful will become your favourite go-to glossy for style, make-up and fashion advice.

“It will be such a pleasure to give newcomers a chance and guide them through their journey into the beauty industry.

IBRIZ KHAN Ibriz is glad she swapped her life as an investment banker for something altogether more glamorous... I graduated from university with a BA hons in Business and Finance and then went to work for an investment bank. However, I quickly realised that although the money was fantastic, I wanted to do something creative. Whilst working I did a part time post grad in interior design, this made me realise I wanted to be in a more creative industry. I went on to train on a one-to-one basis with the Ather Shahzad Academy in Lahore. I then went on to set up Zara's Catering, which has become a very successful events company. I'm very passionate about every project I take on, making sure it's done to the very highest standard. My training academy was a natural progression for me, and the satisfaction from teaching my pupils is immense. That's why I am very honored to have been asked to be part of the prestigious Viya Beauty Awards. I think we have immense raw talent in this country that does not have the resources available to further their aspirations. To be able to give these newcomers a chance and guide them through their journey into the beauty industry will be such a pleasure. www.ibrizkhan.com

Awards “I am honoured to be collaborating with Viya Beauty Awards and also privileged of working with Editor Samina Saeed, together these Elite awards will create a platform for new MUA s on a national and international level

ATTIA With a CV that includes some of the biggest beauty brands in the world, Attia felt it was time to expand the business further....... After Training with the BBM Media school as a TV presenter I decided to qualify as a make-up artist specialising in bridal, photographic and catwalk. Offering a wealth of experience at management, training and mentoring, I bring with me the expertise of working for some of the best known brands within the beauty industry. I began my career with the Lauder group where I spent 10 years working as a make-up artist and skincare specialist. After a long period within the industry I decided to try something different and worked in media and fashion for Harrods. After that I was head hunted to launch Eve Lom and open their new account within Harrods, which then led into a national trainer area role within the Space NK/Eve Lom group. Looking after it on an international level, I was responsible for Eve Lom across all Space NK stores, 15 department store accounts and five spas. Eventually, I couldn't resist the temptation to branch out so with sibling Zakiya (Business partner), which is when the AZ London International Training Academy was born. I feel my career experiences will finally be put to their fullest use in my collaboration with the Viya Beauty Awards. It's an honour to be asked to work with such an established brand. The best part will be the opportunity to mentor young talent through the Awards process - I really want to make a difference to people's lives and careers. www.azlondon.biz

“I know all about the transformation that takes place in an individual when they choose a career in beauty.

ZAIBA KHAN

Zaiba started her career as a legal eagle, but after turning her passion for make-up into a successful business she hasn't looked back... I came from a legal background and practised law for eight years. However, I always had an interest in hair and beauty, so I took on a part time evening class in beauty therapy. I learned the basics in make-up but wanted to extend my knowledge further so I took up a makeup course with Jemma Kidd Make-Up School, which included beauty, catwalk and vintage techniques. I then pursued a career with MAC Cosmetics as a make-up artist, which included media and catwalk work, before moving into the bridal make up business. With lots of hard work, I soon built up a reputation amongst brides and became quite successful as a bridal expert. However, my creative ambitions and demand from my many satisfied customers led to me think about how I could pass on my skills and experience to girls that are in the position that I was in not so long ago. The result of this was the launch of the Zaiba Khan Training Academy, which I launched in 2010. I'm really looking forward to working with the Viya team for these Awards. I know all about the transformation that takes place in an individual when they choose a career in beauty.' www.zaibakhan.co.uk

HIRAL MEI’S...

SECRETS An exclusive interview with the presenter and soon to be actress on beauty – inside and out Photography by Richard Pascoe for Rich’n’Skinny photography www.richnskinny.co.uk

O

n the Sunday as we speak, the beautiful Ms Mei is about to jet back off to India as part of her new exciting adventures. Hiral is now a fast rising star in Bollywood, with a busy schedule. A well-established celebrity in the UK – a host, presenter and the new face of ponds in India. She is now taking a step towards a movie career by moving to Mumbai and work on several projects. Hiral has professionally trained at the Kishore Namit and Kapoor Acting Institution. Will she be the next Ashwarya Rai, we wonder? ‘It’s been a real rollercoaster the last ten years, so I’m ready for anything,’ she says. ‘But I’m under no illusion that I’ll be the next superstar actress.’ In my eyes, however, she looks like she’s already royalty. Poised and classically beautiful, she fits perfectly in with the Bollywood brand of fabulous. She seems to have it all, looks as well as brains – the highlight of her life was getting a degree in Law from Brunel University. Life hasn’t always been easy on Hiral. Like most of us she had to overcome a fair share of setbacks to get where she is now. Believe it or not, she was bullied at school for her unruly hair and skinny figure. Now a stunning beauty, she believes in the power of positive thinking. ‘That’s what keeps you truly youthful,’ she says. Age is not an issue for Hiral. ‘I’m hoping to break some boundaries in acting,’ she laughs. ‘thirty is the new twenty!’

TOP 10 HOT BEAUTY TIPS 1. A Classic Cleanse, Tone, Moisturise

‘To maximise skin quality, keep to a daily routine. Beauty doesn’t have to be expensive – I love the Olay range – great for my dry to normal skin type. Find and stick with what works for you.’

2. Let Skin Breathe ‘Skip foundation and have makeup-free days. Drink lots of water – it helps freshen up the complexion. I recently donated a kidney so have to keep extra -hydrated – and I’ve noticed the difference it makes to skin condition.’ 3. Work with your hair ‘For years I battled with what I thought was dry, damaged hair, then a stylist told me it was simply coarse. Now I use the Aussie Miracle range and the Amaze air styler (by Remington) to cut down on drying time.’ 4. Find a fitness regime you find fun ‘No point dreading exercise; explore what you enjoy. After interviewing boxer Amir Khan, he taught me to throw some punches… now I wind down by hitting the punch-bag! Whatever gets you going!’ 5. Everything in moderation ‘Food’s a huge part of my life but luckily I’m drawn to the healthy. By eating more veg and salads over burgers and chips, it means you can still tuck in to cheesecake once in a while!’ 6. Vitamins & minerals – when to supplement… ‘Eating a healthy, balanced diet shows in your skin, hair and energy levels. If you need a boost, choose supplements with natural ingredients, the body absorbs them better.’ 7. The Body Beautiful ‘Bath-time body brushing’s great for circulation, buff and tone - the long-handled Sanctuary Spa Body Brush from Boots is perfect. Then lavish yourself in body cream for soft, smooth and glowing skin all over!’ 8. What’s in your hero product kit? ‘Mine includes Clarins Beauty Flash Balm for a radiant finish; Yves St Laurent’s Touche Eclat concealer/ highlighter (now in seven shades); a red lipstick worn as stain in the a.m, bolder, p.m.’ 9. Rest, Relax, Rejuvenate

10. Confidence is Key ‘Everyone has times they don’t feel great. Smile and believe in yourself even when you’re blue. Visualise the positive and grow an inner voice to get you glowing when the going gets tough. Not just a beauty boost, it enhances your whole aura.’

Good make-up is important but true beauty is often about being yourself

‘Some days I have to wake up early for a shoot, other times I try to catch up sleep on a chill-out weekend. I spend time with family and friends, kick back, eat good food, unwind; feel better.’

Meet hairdressing’s next superstar… Maz from Zen’s Bridal Hair and Beauty Academy is one of the most exciting hair stylists in recent years

S

he’s been one of Birmingham’s best hidden hair-styling secrets...but that’s all about to change. When it comes to catwalk-chic and fashion-forward trends in hair and beauty styling, Maz is one of the best specialists around. With her excellent educational background, years of experience in the field, and a youthful, experimental approach to hair design, Maz paved herself a way into the avant-garde of the new wave hair scene. Trained in both the traditional and high-fashion hair styles and make-up, Maz is primarily known for standing out from the crowd and delivering daring, fresh hair looks. A qualified hairdresser, she studied at the prestigious London College of Fashion, and opened her own Zen’s Bridal Studio & Training Academy five years ago. Today it is the largest training academy in Birmingham, offering a wide range of courses accredited by The Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists.

Innovative, edgy, elegantly, subtle – Maz’s hairstyles are little short of hair-styling magic. VIYA BEAUTIFUL

S

pecialising in creative and distinctive hair styling and make-up, Maz has already twice stolen the show – in well known hair competitions, winning the avant-garde category in 2009 and 2010. Back at her training academy based in Birmingham, she’s keen on teaching students how to come up with their own unique takes on hair design. ‘It is about expanding your horizons – learning how to think outside of the box.’ Popular culture is one of her main sources of inspiration – especially fascinating to Maz are the artists who dare the audience, such as popstar turned style-icon Lady Gaga. But she also looks for ideas in the latest fashion collections, and mainstream fashion magazines such as Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. She encourages others to seek creative inspiration in a similar manner. ‘Look cross-culture – from TV, to the catwalk, to fashion glossies, to internet, for ideas and solutions to hair styling issues.’ Maz’s artistic influences and creativity are evident in the dramatic hairdos shown to the right. For example, she updated the punk look introducing a fierce Mohican silhouette with a neat twist. In this manner ‘Pretty Punk’, near right, remains girly, even with its edgy texture. Maz has also cleverly combined a fabulous, fashion-forward headline with rockabilly elements in ‘Vintage Chic’ main shot to the right. Her ‘Updo Alternative,’ below, is a distinctive and elegant take on hair that’s up and away from the face. This hair-style is worn best with glamorous halter-necks and daring necklines. As Maz says, ‘Some of these fashion forward creations can be adapted for special occasions to really make a style statement. My tip is that if the hair is ‘doing the talking’, keep the make-up subtle. Our model wears a soft base and nude colour palette throughout.’ Her tips for creating similar model worthy styles? ‘For bulking hair, choose extensions that work well with the style you go for. For ‘Pretty Punk’, they were pre-curled, for ‘Up-do Alternative’ I used two straight, thick extensions to enhance the plait effect. For ‘Vintage Chic’, padding was inserted to build up volume, before attaching extensions at the forehead and crimping across to create an exaggerated, eye-catching structure.’ Meanwhile, the make-up incorporated ‘striking, graphic eyes with lashings of kohl and contoured cheek-bones’ to help accentuate each image.

Whatever hair style you choose, make sure it’s flattering to your face shape.

Interview

‘A

s a hairdresser, I understand hair, its texture and properties,’ says Maz. ‘Fashionable hair can be flattering, but not always – it’s a matter of adapting it to body proportions, face shape and personality.’ She also believes that confidence has much to do with how women choose to wear their hair and make-up. ‘Today’s clients, especially if they’re young, want to try something new and exciting, instead of looking just like everyone else,’ she says. ‘Even brides want to break out and experiment more, especially for the reception look. Standard styles just aren’t enough anymore, which is why I like to break new ground by creating designs with a twist.’ The latest of these styles pictured here branch out into the dark and seductive, with a Vogue-ish ‘Gothic Glamour,’ (opposite page), which uses netting for an added effect of mystique. Maxed out hair is one of Maz’s trademarks – a variation of which is ‘Volume Vamp’ (above) – a hairstyle that is guaranteed to turn heads! Every hairdresser’s as good as her next up-do and ‘Parisienne Pixie,’ pictured right, combines edge with elegance – it’s ideal for a cocktail evening. Her schedule for months ahead looks busy. Maz is already booked for new catwalk shows, and is in talks about features in the fashion press. She also plans to take her creations to a more adventurous audience, possibly venturing out into the world of pop culture. Whatever she does, she insists on bringing a style that’s fresh and unique. ‘I like to show that I can stand out from the rest, let my imagination fly, be a bit daring. I aim to always be different!’ Her tips on getting such avant-garde styles right? ‘It often comes down to appropriate size and proportion,’ she says.‘For example, in ‘Gothic Glamour’ the model’s hair is wrapped into buns and positioned in a manner flattering to her face. Similarly, ‘Volume Vamp’ is backcombed quite high, but only so much that it doesn’t take over the model’s face – you wear the hair, not the other way round!’ And what does Maz consider as the best accessory to go with any hair and make-up style? ‘That’s easy,’ smiles Maz. ‘Lots of confidence and attitude!’

aiba Khan Hair and Make-up by Zaiba Khan

B

radford-based Zaiba always wanted to carve out a niche as a make-up artist with a difference. One that was diverse in inspiration, cross-cultural and fashionforward. With this in mind she trained at The Jemma Kidd Make-Up School, later backing up westernbased techniques with a season behind the popular MAC counter at Manchester’s state-of-the-art Trafford Centre. More recently, a shot of a model she made up was entered by the photographer into the British Institute of Professional Photography’s competition and awarded third place. It’s evident that Zaiba’s make-up approach is going places. ‘I’m the opposite of samey,’ says Zaiba when asked to sum up her appeal. At 34, she’s already an ex-lawyer turned beauty therapist with her own beauty business for the past six years. The next artistic string to her bow - in a bridal context has been something of a surprise. ‘Unlike many Asian make-up artists, my career path’s worked in reverse,’ Zaiba considers. ‘Instead of focusing on brides in the first place then moving into fashion catwalk and photo-shoot circles, for me it happened the other way round.’ Though not technically

62

Known for her cool, new way with colour and style, from making up fashion models to brides, she’s one to watch…

trained in the art of bridal make-up, brides of all descriptions appear to be making a bee-line to her salon door. With plans to expand her busy BABTAC accredited Academy towards the Midlands and London as well as internationally, Zaiba’s aiming big. Her career seems to be thriving in two directions: coming up with funky catwalk images with strong, statement looks and in another beauty world, giving brides what they want for their wedding day. ‘Every bride’s different though there is an accepted image for the Asian bride,’ she says. ‘One bride might want heavy eyes, another a more toned down look but overall, it’s often very dramatic, precise and time-consuming. In comparison, the western wedding look’s much simpler – fresh, minimal and glowing.’ When asked what her signature look is Zaiba prefers to be thought of as versatile and bespoke to every individual. ‘Although in general, my makeup message is that elegant enhancement works better than make-up used as disguise.’ Practising what she preaches, visualising herself as a bride to be in years to come, she predicts she’ll still be wearing make-up that’s eye-catching yet subtle. ‘That means no full-on traditional looks with lashes and liner!’ she laughs.

As a professional, Zaiba treats make-up as ‘in the moment and every client as special’, though like all of us, she has some beauty icons who she says, she would love to get her hands on. ‘For the catwalk I’d love to transform the stunning supermodel from Victoria’s Secret and Maybelline, Adriana Lima,’ she muses. ‘Otherwise it’s most anyone who’s anyone in Bollywood. It’s so colourful with lots of bright costumes and a spirit of adventure in putting the whole image together…Then there’s Aishwarya Rai,’ she continues, warming to her theme. ‘She’s married now so I can’t create her bridal image but I’d love to transform her classical look into high fashion… I’d bypass her traditional make-up. In some ways she doesn’t appear typically Asian: her skin tone could almost be Mediterranean. I would go colour-crazy and make her look like she’s never looked before: elegant but edgy, high fashion-glam!’ We may not have been able to get hold of Aishwarya Rai in time, but in the following pages, Zaiba’s worked her magic on our own model, to create a mini-portfolio of looks for your inspiration. From elaborate and experimental high-fashion to classical with a twist and soft elegance ravishing for the registry, you’re sure to find a look to love or adapt to suit…

A Flattering Facial – At Any Age… Selected by Dr Fauzia

20’s

The Laser Genesis Hydra Facial, Limelight Facial or Acne Treatment:

30’s

Photofacial, 3D Rejuvenation, Limelight: ‘By now, skin starts to lose collagen.

‘All very popular choices in this age range. In half an hour, correct pigment abnormalities, large pores, or boost radiance. Limelight for young adults is beneficial in the treatment of sun damage, freckles and discolouration.’

Photofacial stimulates its production, invigorating and correcting the skin’s three basic layers. Just one procedure acts as a great facial for a healthy skin type. The 3D Rejuvenation procedure is superior for helping problem skin, even with certain medical conditions.’

Titan, 3D Rejuvenation, Laser Genesis:

‘The Titan infra-red laser is definitely the best, advanced facial for the 40-year-olds and above. It’s equal to a noninvasive face lift. By correcting collagen at the deepest level, it helps to hold back the ageing process, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, restoring youthful plumpness and texture. The 3D Rejouvenation addresses more complex problems that afflict women after 40. Certain combinations of the above can be customised.’

To achieve good results and minimise sideeffects, the selective use of lasers and trained therapists is critical. Dr Fauzia Khan

I like to combine science with art, to make you look and feel better. Dr Fauzia Khan

The latest generation of rejuvenating facial was launched last year, allowing an ongoing treatment with infra-red laser technology. The procedure stimulates collagen, rejuvenates skin, and takes up to several years off in a single session. The Process: Infra-red rays penetrate and stimulate collagen production. A fuller, younger look is achieved. The skin’s top surface is left radiant and fresh, the second layer is restored and improved for a long-lasting maximum effect. What’s important, such collagen stimulation is nonreversible, meaning its results don’t fade, as happens with the usual anti-ageing treatments. Overall, this procedure acts as a non-invasive, permanent face-lift. Appearance Effects: Expect a great complexion glowing with radiance. Refined and less lined and texture, the skin appears firmer and lifted. Post-Treatment Points: Although a comfortable process, tolerance levels naturally vary from client to client. As with all procedures, an in-depth consultation prior to procedure, will determine the benefits and probable effects for you. Number of Treatments Needed: To those aged 40 plus an initial four sessions are suggested; younger clients in their 20’s/30’s are advised one to two.

Skin Tightening with Cutera Titan

Titan Xeo from Cutera, USA, is the latest, award-winning 3-D Skin Rejuvenation technology officially approved by the FDA. A safe, nonsurgical process, the Titan procedure uses an infra-red light source to tighten skin and reverse the signs of ageing... The Process: No injections or fillers are involved. Each Titan pulse gives a slight and manageable heating sensation. In this way, Titan can stimulate long-term collagen rebuilding – notably improving the client’s appearance with younger looking skin. Appearance Effects: A comfortable and nonsurgical process, it safely treats saggy and wrinkled skin throughout the body. A known collagen booster it is routinely used to tone, lift and tighten skin on the face and neck. Safe for all age groups and all skin types including tanned skin. There are no known side-effects of this treatment. Post-Treatment Points: No local anaesthesia or pain medication needed. Post-treatment, there may be some redness, which subsides within a few hours. Number of Treatments Needed: While just one treatment can produce visible effects, a complete programme of two to three sessions spread over a few months can produce the desired results. Evidence shows that though it can’t stop the ageing process altogether, the Titan can turn back the hands of time quite a bit – clients can enjoy its benefits for a few years. An annual maintenance treatment is an effective option as well.

Skin Resurfacing (HydraFacial)

New to the UK, the HydraFacial treatment is the latest advance in skin resurfacing. It is the only non-laser hydra-dermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously. This results in clearer, radiant skin. The treatment is soothing, moisturising, non-invasive and non-irritating. The Process: The HydraFacial procedure uses a Diamond Abrasion Tip to resurface the skin. Latest studies in the United States have demonstrated that it improves the skin quality by repairing the dermal matrix and delivering beneficial antioxidants without discomfort. Appearance Effects: The treatment improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, hyperpigmentation and brown spots. Skin tone is more even, texture refined. HydraFacial slows down your skin’s ageing process and delays the need for invasive procedures. Post-Treatment Points: The HydraFacial procedure is safe for most skin types and colours including thin or ageing skin, dark skin, dry skin and oily skin. There are no major points to consider. Number of Treatments Needed: Customised to client. As an example, four treatments within an 11-week period on oily, blemish-prone skin can stop breakouts, refine skin tone and texture.

a youthful appearance. It is effective in the treatment of conditions that are typically associated with premature signs of ageing and sun damage. The Process: By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin’s surface, this noninvasive laser stimulates collagen to re-grow. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness. Appearance Effects: Laser Genesis can help restore the skin’s youthful glow and appearance by smoothing out uneven texture caused by ageing, sun damage or scars. An even, healthy complexion results – as large pores are reduced in size, minor imperfections diminished. Post-Treatment Points: No side-effects such as bruising or excessive skin irritation. Treatments can be performed without the use of anaesthetics or gel. Although few patients report discomfort, the most common is a slight redness that disappears within a few hours after treatment. Number of Treatments Needed: The treatment results are often subtle. On average, you may require four to six treatments in order to achieve optimal results. However, every patient’s skin type and condition differs, and so does the number of treatments required to get visible effects.

Limelight Facial

An exciting and new, nonsurgical procedure for skin rejuvenation and treatment of pigmentation. It offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections caused by ageing and sun damage. The Process: Can be customised to your skin type, and treat only discoloured areas. When the pulse of light hits the skin, some clients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. The application of gel helps, and anaesthesia or pain medicine is typically not required. Most treatments take less than an hour – though it depends on the size of the treated area. Appearance Effects: Great results in removing redness, tiny veins or brown spots on any part of your face, neck and décolleté. Even the most rigid brown spots and red areas are removed. Post-Treatment Points: Immediately following the treatment, brown spots will start to darken and skin may appear slightly red. The treated area may become mildly swollen, which will typically last only for a few hours - possibly a day or longer. Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade. Diffused redness or tiny veins will decrease and any mottled complexion will improve. Take precautions outdoors, remember always to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen. This will minimise sun damage and the appearance of new spots and diffuse redness. Number of Treatments Needed: Normally, one to three treatments are sufficient to see results. Additional treatments may be recommended, especially for excessively sun-damaged skin.

Laser Genesis

Laser Genesis is the innovative treatment of wrinkles and redness and the management of large pores and skin texture. This technologically advanced procedure promotes vibrant and healthy looking skin with

3D Rejuvenation

All clients have a range of different needs. Imperfections at the surface, in the epidermis or at the deeper dermis are common. Unfortunately, as we grow older, they can turn into problems such as rosacea and deep wrinkles – The 3D Rejuvenation technology works, as the ultimate complexion combat strategy. The Process: Combining the Limelight Facial, Laser Genesis and Titan, the Cutera brings a revolutionary 3-tier, approach to skin rejuvenation. Skin tone, texture and tightness become notably improved. Appearance Effects: Women of any age can be treated. Slack skin, wrinkles, redness, brown spots, and enlarged pores are the most common conditions that are treated with this technique. The most popular areas for treatment are the face and neck. However, other body parts, such as the hands, arms and abdomen, are also frequently and effectively treated. Post-Treatment Points: See the relevant description under each process. Number of Treatments Needed: Each treatment regime is tailored to individual requirements. Most patients receive between two and six treatments. Some may need a few more depending upon factors such as age, skin condition, environmental factors, etc. Typically, patients will start to see results after two to four weeks.

Acne/Acne Scarring Treatment

Acne is caused by the body’s increased production of the hormone androgen, which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Normal hair and sebaceous glands can become partially blocked. Bacteria live on the sebum and produce fatty acids. The body responds by blocking the gland’s exit to the skin. Sometimes the mixture of hair protein, oil and fatty acids damages the walls of the follicle and causes inflammation. The Ellipse Operator system helps. The Process: Ellipse treatment works by reducing the blood supply to the sebaceous gland, which slows down production of the body oil sebum. Including consultation and preparation, the session usually takes around 20 minutes. Appearance Effects: Those with permanent acne will benefit from this treatment immensely. The best results are achieved on inflammatory acne – causing red, aching, raised pimples. Post-Treatment Points: No anaesthetics required. Clients often describe the discomfort as a warming sensation. The lighter the skin colour, the less pain is often the case. Number of Treatments Needed: The light used in this procedure is completely safe, so no special precautions are necessary. Potentially harmful wavelengths are removed by the unique Ellipse Dual Mode Filtering system. Although results vary from person to person, initial results from a recent clinical study show that 58% of acne lesions disappeared with the Ellipse treatment, compared to 33% improvement with topical cream alone. A typical course of therapy includes four treatments, three weeks apart.

T

hanks to latest innovations, hair styling is now more versatile than ever. We can go from colour to colour, long to short, straight to curly, curly to straight; volumise with extensions, change our hair’s condition. We can quickly and easily transform our image. We all have a ‘bad hair’ day every now and then, but we don’t have to have a bad hair life anymore. Understanding our hair, the way it acts, looks, and behaves in different circumstances, is the first step in achieving our true crowning glories. At a deeper level, exercise and diet, amount of sleep and stress levels all play their part in the hair’s overall appearance. If your hair’s looking limp and lifeless for longer than it should, it may be a good time to have a health check. Lack of iron and other nutrients – which happens to a lot of women these days - may be at the root cause. Pay attention to your hair, address any irregularities in hair ends or scalp. If there’s a problem beneath the surface, no matter how much product you put in, your hair will not look strong and healthy. Styling-wise, enjoy experimenting with the wealth of

products and see what suits you. Your hair will change with the seasons, but your lifestyle and age are also a factor. Consider cutting and conditioning split ends first, then concentrate on styling. Manageable, great hair should suit the occasion as well as your personality. Whether that’s classic or avant-garde, impeccably straight or wavy, enjoy your hair and the unique statement it makes. The new generation of styling aids are here to help. Do what the top stylists do, and create your own custom-kit of products suited for your hair type and style. Whether you’re sporting sleek and straight or spiral curls, you will need a different set of brushes, tools and products to help upkeep the good looks. It may be worth asking your stylist how to replicate your favourite style – or someone at the beauty counter for cross range hair product advice, to help you make the right choice. Whatever your desired look, adopt this popular hairdressing rule: work with your hair, not against it, and with some nurturing loving care, it will work for you!

For optimum gloss and silky texture, good styling is only half of the success. As important are the tools and products you use. From the never-ending array of serums and finishing creams to multi-sized brushes and varieties of straighteners, how’s a girl to choose? It’s probably safest to go for known brand names, which offer more quality control. You can be sure that these products will contain only superior ingredients. Premium equipment is also a safe and sensible investment. On heated appliances, never skimp on quality. Give hair a head start with salon professional hair dryers for less damaging drying time. Add condition with the latest grooming products for gleaming, radiant results full of shine and control.

Where curls are concerned, it’s important to keep hair in tip-top condition. A frizzfree mane looks great and lasts longer, when you treat it with the right product. Choose the correct styling kit to suit both your hair texture and the desired curl effect. Enhance condition with the latest reconstruct and recovery creams, separate with nourishing, curl-defining treatments. Experiment with ceramic brushes, wands and rollers to unfurl customised curls. Nailing the PURPLE PALETTE It really is a ‘purple reign’ for the distinctive hue, so steeped in history. The colour of royal robes and regalia, whether worn in heritage velvets or amethyst jewels, continues to be a popular choice amongst the contemporary brides. If you decide to go purple, keep it regal and tasteful in dark matt. You can enhance it with cosmic twists of glitter for edge and attitude. Or warm up the cool tones with a touch of mulberry and bilberry, which work great with Asian complexions. Go bold and integrate the eyes, lips and nails in this top shade of the season. Or for a stronger fashion statement, give your nails a hand with lustrous lacquer, nail jewels and other decorations. One thing’s for sure, the colour purple isn’t for shrinking violets! PUTTING

ON THE PURPLE. If pink

stands for girlie charm, then purple equals grown-up chic. Dramatic and daring, if worn the right way, purple palette can be fresh and flattering. Smoky amethyst to aubergine eye shades cleverly bring out the whites of the eyes, while dark, glossy lips enhance sparkling white teeth. An overall purple hued make-up complements dark and semi-dark hair, and ties in well with a black wardrobe. Wearing purple does not need to be difficult. First, decide which tone to adapt – elegant or edgy? Experiment with hues and layers to suit your skin colouring. Integrate eyes and lips by choosing the same shades – a purple-based look requires a colour match for better balance across facial features. For the eyes, consider hints of browns, a strong or neutral highlighter, cat’s liner and/or kohl, plus defined brows, for perfect purple peepers. Remember, when eyes and lips are amplified, the complexion needs just a hint of understated blusher. Pared down, the purple image can be polished and fashionable for day – by night rev up the colour depth for glamour to the max.

Face

ace base Make-up by Marelene Andersson

ALL IN THE APPLICATION… …use skincare brushes for a polished effect.

Before you get carried away with trying out all the lastest colours in cosmetics, it’s best to go back to basics and answer the big question: is the foundation you use really suitable to your beauty-type? Face the facts here and find out how the right products can improve your appearance.

W

e spend ages choosing the right shade of lipstick, but when it comes to settling for the right base, we tend to get it fast and often wrong. If there’s one cosmetic that can make or break your finished look, it’s foundation. This make-up essential will gently veil over uneven skin tones and fade out any imperfections, brightening up your face with a youthful glow. Think of foundation as the first step in creating the perfect canvas for the rest of your make-up work. As strange as it sounds, once upon a time (but not that long ago) only pink tinted foundations were available in stores. However, thanks to ranges like Bobbi Brown and MAC, a whole spectrum of yellow pigment based formulations appeared. Now more skin types can be beautifully suited.

86

Different skin needs are also addressed - from age to lifestyle. From light, tinted moisturisers, to creamy products with and without oil; to all-inone, portable compact foundation into powders and more specialist camouflage creams for problem skin: the choice has never been greater. Bespoke foundations are even available - not only customised to skin colour but with extra properties such as light-diffusing or long-lasting wear. The new generation of concealer and powder has also improved alongside. Now there’s no excuse not to look flawless and fabulous; all it takes is knowing just what trio of foundation, concealer and powder to choose! To help you get your face base right, here’s the low-down on how to put a great foundation in place…

Face

abulous fFOUNDATIONS

DO only use foundations where needed – whatever your age. It’s not about covering up your whole face but making skin tone consistent with some subtle enhancement. Try applying a thin coat all over, with a little more where needed. DON’T use foundation to change your skin colour. Going darker or lighter will look unnatural. Always choose a tone that perfectly matches your own skin tone. DO choose good quality face products as a base. Unlike skin creams where expense doesn’t automatically equal better, this is one aspect of skin care where price really makes a difference. DON’T go foundation shopping at the end of the day or when you’re feeling stressed or tired – it’s a recipe for making bad decisions. A good salesperson will advise, but not pressure you into buying. Ask for a sample, if you’re unsure which product to choose – big cosmetic companies are usually happy to help. DO only test foundation on the jaw-line. This is the only sure-fire way to see whether the shade matches your neck – which can be lighter than the face. There should be a seamless finish between face and neck – not an unsightly tell-all line between the two. Try up to three shades at the same time and check the results in natural light with a hand mirror - the artificial light in stores is sometimes misleading. The right foundation should blend easily into your skin and add vitality. DON’T opt for foundations with iridescent particles and ‘strobe’ creams or illuminators – unless your skin is in tip-top condition. Though these products can give beautiful effects on normal or oily skin, they can feel dehydrating and look ageing, if you have dry skin. In such case, you should apply a good primer beneath your base to give a velvety feel. Also, formulas with light reflecting pigments can give a lovely, soft appearance and a healthy glow. Matte textures work well on oily skin. DO make sure your moisturiser and foundation are compatible. It doesn’t matter if both

FINGERS, SPONGES OR BRUSHES? … the answer lies in whatever works for you.

products are not from the same brand ‒ but they should work well side by side. How to tell when it’s wrong? You’ll notice make-up will disappear too soon and frequentlty need retouching. Or unsuitable foundation will sit on top of the skin rather than blending in well.

“Only use foundation where needed – as enhancement for the face, not a mask.” WHAT GENERATION OF FOUNDATIONS? Apart from skin colour, your foundation should match your age and skin properties. There’s a whole spectrum of products out there that will work, if you’re in your teens and early 20s. Other will work better throughout your 30s and beyond. Regardless of skin type, one thing is certain: go for light, wearable, non-clogging foundations and remember – less is often more.

YOUNG SKINS Tinted moisturisers are perfect for this skin type, as they’re the lightest and available in a range of many natural shades. At this age, you can afford to let your skin show through, so use it only to illuminate and tone and only where needed, not all over. Avoid only if you have ultra-dry skin – or you could wear your normal moisturiser underneath. Try: Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture SPF15; Aveda’s Moisture Plus Tint; No 7’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser; B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful Tinted Moisturiser.

MATURE SKINS For thirty plus and above, you can choose from a really wide range of product variations available

on the market. Do opt for light, long-lasting formulations that provide a moisture-quenching boost to skin. Avoid those labelled ‘oil-free’, as a little oil in the mix provides a soothing, creamy and even coverage. However, if you have oily skin, do seek out oil-free products. The older we are, the heavier the foundation layer can be – to compensate and literally ‘fill in’ any lines or wrinkles. Yet still, light to medium coverage is most flattering in the majority of cases. Try: Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Stick; M·A·C’s Face and Body Foundation; also the more creamy versions of all in one compact foundations into powders. Versions by Yves St Laurent, Guerlain, Chanel, Lancome and Estee Lauder are recommended for skin comfort and coverage.

PROBLEM SKIN For skin with noticeable scars, thread veins, pigmentation etc., you may need a higher level of ‘camouflage’ coverage. Seek out products from specialist suppliers. Check out larger beauty stores such as Space NK and Harvey Nicks or theatre make-up companies like Screenface and Dermablend.

leek SCONCEALERS

C

oncealers are great for hiding blemishes and small veins, but resist the urge to overcompensate by caking on. As with foundation, go for a shade of concealer that matches skin tone. As a general rule, those with yellow undertones are more likely to suit mid to dark skins, while peach tones flatter fairer complexions. Blend concealer and foundation together, if your pigmentation is uneven. Prefer to apply separately? Try foundation first, otherwise the concealer might get wiped off. The secret is for concealer to smooth over skin, instead of settling into any lines! Try applying with fingers or a brush for the best effect. Bear in mind you may need two separate concealers – one for covering dark shadows, another for blemishes. Not all products are versatile enough to work for both. Try mixing an under-eye brightener with concealer for underneath the eyes – oil-based products are good for this. Look for: light-diffusing concealers to mask really dark shadows. Avoid: Those with chalky or greasy textures. If it feels strange to handle, you probably won’t be pleased with how it performs on your face. For discreet results, concealer is best applied with a brush. Once applied, blend with fingers, especially before powdering, as this will smooth away any lines (on blemishes blend away the edges). Classic Concealers: An illuminator that perfectly conceals eye shadows, awardwinning Yves St Laurent’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch; Becca’s (they have a range of 20 shades); Bourjois Light Reflecting Concealer; Mac’s Select Cover-P. Recommended for redness/ blemishes/custom-blending: Laura Mercier’s Secret Camaflage.

pPOINTS owder I

f you like a finished appearance, powder helps set make-up and gives an added polish for special occasions. Consider it also a beneficial cosmetic for Asian skins prone to oiliness and for minimising shine. Powder’s one of those products not always used properly. For everyday daytime and in the summer months, it can look a little too obvious, so concentrate on getting the amount right.

Then there’s the question of pressed or loose textures. Invest in a pretty pressed powder compact from ranges such as Estee Lauder and Clinique for your handbag – perhaps as a chic pre-bridal gift to yourself? Loose powder is seen as more contemporary and can be flicked on as well, if needed. Makeup artists recommend the new generation of mineral based powders – check out ranges such as L’Oréal, Revlon and M·A·C. They are finely textured, actually improve skin condition and come with an SPF factor. For beautifully luminous skin that looks a dream in photos, models swear by Corn Silk powder, available from good chemists. As with foundation, how you apply powder can drastically change the results – try what works best for you: brush, puff or sponge. A powder puff still needs a brush to sweep away any excess. A more natural look is achieved with a brush, a more matte finish with a puff. If your skin is oily, a puff will help blot away any grease, but if your skin is dry, use powder sparingly, as it can enhance this skin tendency. Whatever your makeup preference, the secret here is in patting the powder lightly onto the face. What brand is best? Products and ranges are always a personal choice. For the Asian skin spectrum, from light tones through medium and dark, make-up artist Marlene Andersson recommends foundations, concealers and powders from brands such as Armani, Becca, Bobbi Brown and M·A·C as being especially suitable.

ALL IN THE APPLICATION Finding the perfect base is priority - but how it is applied can make all the difference to the finished look… Always moisturise skin well before applying foundation and for best effects, try to leave five minutes between priming face (moisturiser, sunblock, eye cream, etc.) and applying foundation, to allow the skin to absorb the product. Pay special attention to blending well under the chin and jawline. Fingers, sponge or brushes? Whatever works best for you! When it comes to blending, fingers are a safe place to start, as their warmth helps distribute and blend colour evenly on the skin. Using brushes to pat on, as needed, gives slick professional results, but can become mask-like, if overused. A sponge can give a more natural looking skin effect, especially if used slightly damp – but note that sponge application can lead to clogging. Remember, whatever applicator you use, keep good hygiene. For close-up perfection, you may be tempted to layer on your base using a magnifying mirror. However, results could turn out to be far too exaggerated. Instead, use a regular mirror and photoperfect results should be guaranteed!

A big beauty problem for brides is simply lack of time. Make-up artist Ashifa has the solution – chic round the clock, no need to change faces!

n her experience, the bridal beauty issue that comes up most often in conversation with her clients is that of changing looks – from day into evening – without taking

too much time during the big day. While a lot of brides stay in the same outfit throughout the entire ceremony, some wish to change dresses – from ceremonial reds to western white by night. But there is a problem: ‘after the temple ceremony, most brides say they haven’t time for a complete change of makeup,’ she explains. ‘By avoiding overly matching make-up and complementing the accessories or embellishment instead, it creates a better base for putting on multiple looks in one evening. It’s quicker - and less fussy - to slightly adjust rather than try to transform entirely between events.’ Ashifa sorts the cosmetics conundrum by toning the primary or morning make-up to embroidery or jewellery.

Go for Gold Muted golds matched to your jewellery will look serene throughout the entire ceremony Base: Armani Luminous Silk 8 Liquid foundation with longlasting lustre, fixed with MAC translucent powder. Majestic Muse Why settle for less than the most majestic make-up? Set against the regal splendour of deep purple hues, a rich and polished make-up palette works best. To first contour the cheekbones with some gold blusher, Saima chose Nectar by Bobbi Brown. EYES will shine thanks to MAC’s Expensive Pink dusted over lids and Retro Spec used as brow bone highlighter. To accentuate the exotic feel of this look, Eggplant by Bobbi Brown is used with iridescent Night Porter green shadow by Nars. Bobbi Brown’s Ivy Shimmer Ink outlines the whole eye area with lengthening coats of YSL False Lash mascara to finish. Lips lined in Spice by MAC, combined with lipstick in Nectar by Bobbi Brown and a frosty finish with Expensive Pink shadow.

BRIDE For brides in need of an authentic and regal Middle Eastern feel, these latest must-have looks might sparkle your inspiration…

T

oday’s Middle Eastern bridal beauty is an eyecatching mix of colourful heritage style and traditional elements in western white, says make-

up artist Romina. Luckily, seven day celebrations give enough time to incorporate the many shades of pinks and reds for the ceremony. For the reception a demure look based on the subtle western wedding look is ideal adapted. As variety is the spice of life, it adds visual interest to meet each of your wedding occasions with a different look. Here’s how....

RADIANT PINKS for a plush and polished finish to any blushing bride Image Info: Kryolan foundation and loose anti-shine powder customized to suit model’s skin; No 7 Rose Pink, highlighted with MAC’s Soft & Gentle Mineralise. Eyes: contoured in Bella Pierre pigments Resonance, Deja Vous and Diverse, Clarins White Marshmallow as base, lined with Kryolan’s cake liner in black. MAC’s dark brown brow pencil and Zoomlash mascara to finish. Lips: lined in Whirl, coloured in Modesty, both by MAC.

hen it comes to introducing the ‘white’ factor into your wedding look, when done in authentic style, the results

have a true Middle Eastern elegant heritage effect. Less ‘made up’ then your typical Asian bride but more defined than her subtle western counterpart, the model carries a look that is easily adapted to many occasions. A winning combination of radiant, dewy skin, feline outlined eyes and subtle rosebud lips. As smouldering reds and pinks here would overwhelm the white dress, so working with a toned down colour palette creates the most flattering face. With this light make-up, ornate up-dos adorned with tikka, jhoomar, net veils to flowers and decorative headbands and extravagant jewellery can all be added to the mix. In the same way for the reception function, experimenting with unusual jewel hues – aquamarine and jade – as above, will work well with such a balanced face base.

RAVISHING REDS Unbeatable for wedding ceremony splendour Eyes: Maximised first in a base of blacks with a mix of Kryolan and cake liner; Bella Pierre’s Gold Celebration and Champagne highlighter on top, arc in Kryolan red over lids and Dior Black to finish. Lips: MAC’s Ruby Woo lipstick with scarlet liner sets off the jewels and net with style.

T

he bright saturated red is in Asian tradition the colour of life. It’s also one of the most popular colours in eastern weddings past and

present. Often at the centrepiece of the ceremony, a red wedding dress will go well with sultry eyes coloured, lined and accented to match the gleam of scarlet lips – just bold enough to show through any netted veil, designed of course to tie in with tikka and jhoomar, necklace and earrings jewel sets. The best effects are those that give a tempting glimpse of a gracefully made-up face beneath the net…

Uwaisa of The Henna Agency explains why henna’s a girl’s best friend, shares a few industry secrets – and introduces her dream team of henna specialists…

UWAISA

HENNA ASSISTED BY HERA

U

nlike a lot of henna artists with portfolios full of patterns that look gorgeous in pictures, but are often hard to do in reality. Uwaisa delivers a unique style that blends pretty with practical. ‘I want ladies to be able to get the exact look I show in my images’ says the experienced henna artist, ‘so that when I hear “I want that mehndi design!” – I know we can make it happen.’ Mehndi trends come and go and though ‘lots of glitz and razzmatazz’ is in right now, Uwaisa prefers to draw from more traditional lines. ‘Classical henna is endlessly creative in its own right,’ she says. ‘The most recurring bridal request is for floral designs – in dark paste, as it’s more durable than glitter. Most wedding themes can be reflected in henna – such as lotus flowers or other floral arrangements to match the décor and outfit.’ Apart from weddings, Uwaisa’s service suits girlie mehndi parties, religious festivals and many other functions you want to stand out at. It’s also a great way of ‘artistic selfexpression for any individual.’ With fusion designs a specialism, Uwaisa mixes the intricacy of Indian patterns with the structure of traditional Arabic henna. Fast-paced, she is usually able to finish patterning of hands, arm ‘sleeves’ and feet within two to three hours. Especially for Viya Beautiful, Uwaisa recreated her trademark look in primary colours. ‘These three main hues are a part of every colour we see around us,’ she says. ‘There is no better place to begin your henna adventures.’

Uwaisa’s Henna Tips and Techniques: Uwaisa says that the best henna is 100% natural, hypo-allergenic, imported from Pakistan or India, and mixed according to a traditional recipe. ‘The results are safe and the stain comes out dark and durable.’ She advises against buying ‘stock-piled’ supplies from the high street or using black henna – ‘though popular, it can be dangerous and leave burn marks on your skin.’ ‘Colour-wise, if you don’t want an orange tone, use washable glitter for a temporary colour-matching sparkle.’ ‘Waxed skin looks great but can be a bit tender. If you are going to have your arms and legs waxed prior to getting your henna, make sure you leave a day or two apart between the procedures.’ ‘For best results, henna needs to be applied two days before the day you wish to show it.’ ‘Like make-up, henna’s very much about personal taste. Whatever your occasion, it’s your day, your choice, as the client.’

* * * *

Though only in her late 20’s, Uwaisa has over ten years of professional experience. She is qualified by City & Guilds in the art of henna, and is an experienced henna instructor. Some time ago, she decided to combine her passion for henna and teaching skills, and created her very own henna course with ‘foolproof syllabus that does not disappoint!’ Now available nationwide, her courses are attended by amateurs and professionals. ‘My students are excellent. The most talented I invited to form part of what I call The Henna Agency.’

‘The outfit and pretty henna patterns go perfectly with the whole ‘mehndi party’ theme. It’s a traditional henna with a twist. Enhance the flower pattern with Swarovski crystals and glitter in silver and warm gold – for a fun, rich feel.’

‘Red goes hand-in-hand with the wedding in Asian tradition and is a classic choice amongst young brides. It’s become popular for women to choose backless outfits, which gives them a great excuse to have a pretty design on their back! Here, I opted for a black henna base to work with the crimson sari. Red and silver gemstones, combined with sparking glitter, echo the dress and wind elegantly down the spine. As effective an accessory as jewellery.’

era and henna go together in perfect harmony, it seems! From a student to ‘right hand girl’, Hera has worked together with Uwaisa on

several occasions. Together with her colleague Suraiya, she worked for a client who requested twenty people to have henna similar to the bride’s on their palms. Intricate full patterns on both hands – some on both sides – were completed within three hours, without compromising on neatness and careful finish. ‘The clients were amazed at the speed in which we delivered the designs.’ On another occasion, a client asked for something very different to Hera’s usual style and gave her a copy of a new design to study. Hera spent weeks practising the pattern to spot-on standard. Hera says that she takes Uwaisa’s mantra very seriously: ‘we are artists before we are business women.’ Now known as a henna perfectionist, she still e-mails her mentor henna drawings, she finds inspiring, to ask how to achieve similar results. ‘I love the attention to detail in henna art and I am truly inspired by very intricate bridal designs. I aim to use my inspirations, whenever I work on a bridal pattern. I am a traditional at heart, but I also try to be versatile and create designs that fit specific requirements of each client: colour, style or pattern. Specialised in: ‘Bridal requirements to high fashion glitter and gemstone themes.’ www.hera.thehennaagency.com

Years later, aged 28, Amina found her passion repeating in her daughter, who at five years old requested henna whenever Eid or a wedding was on the horizon. eauty businesswoman Saima was first inspired to start her own hair and make-up training empire having been inspired by her time spent at cool cosmetics company, Bobbi Brown. Booked up for brides and parties on top of her counter workload, she decided to launch herself solo – and seven years on, she’s glad she did. She now manages five international make-up academies from London to New York, Chicago to Denmark and Pakistan. The classic Saima Akram course offers basic training across the everyday and key traditional looks to bridal and highlights the importance of the consultation. The intensive five day variation includes tutorials on the latest hair styles and extensions and catwalk trends. A one day self-grooming or personal makeover course is also available. ollowing intensive make-up artist training with Saima, Kiran has now gone forward with her own business venture. ‘I believe that my job is to ensure the beauty of the client comes out to full effect,’ she says. ‘There’s a great importance to looking exquisite on your special day. I’m happy if by making up the client to her wishes it helps her look and feel great - whatever the occasion.’ Kiran points out that her customer’s satisfaction is her priority – achieved through creating the most flattering interpretation of their dream image. Otherwise, Kiran’s noticing ‘a lot of demand for the classical look. There’s an emphasis on colour with an intense eye and more natural lip. Also a Mughali/Pakistani cosmetic style is gaining prominence.’ As for her stand-out make-up signature – ‘it’s turning out to be a striking Middle Eastern look with all attention on the eyes.’ •My bridal countdown tip:‘Consider the condition of your features. For optimum brows, grow your eyebrows out at least three months ahead of the wedding – then have them shaped before your mehndi. Dry lips can be hard to work with, so lip balm nightly and gently scrub daily. Improve hair texture greatly with rich hair masks and nourishing keratin treatments. I tell my brides not to wash their hair on their wedding day so as to avoid any styles slipping!’ •My make-up tip:‘Avoid any last minute changing of hair colour – it will alter the look of your chosen make-up. Remember to take your wedding top, scarf and prominent jewellery – or pictures of these – with you to your make-up trial!’ •My trend tip:‘Brows are becoming full and bold. There’s an emphasis on trends in beautiful hair jewels and co-ordinating them with the make-up.’

It was a challenge met - and proved to me there are no rules. That’s the beauty of make-up!’ •My bridal countdown tip:‘When looking at make-up and magazines for inspiration, try to envisage your favourite looks on yourself. Not everything suits everyone so explore what flatters the unique you.’ •My make-up tip:‘A heavy look is personal preference, though I think less is more. If an outfit is bright and embellished, accessories and make-up needn’t go over the top. Today’s top looks are clean and flawless.’ •My trend tip: ‘The crazy colour phase has passed. Pretty pinks to fuchsia purples and coral for nails, lips and blush are taking over. A subtle, elegant, almost demure look is coming in - think Aishwarya Rai or ‘English Rose’ Kate Middleton. Both radiate enhanced yet effortless, natural beauty.’

They met at a Wembley event a few years ago and despite having tried other make-up training courses, Kokab decided to train with Saima and has never looked back. ‘I liked Saima’s techniques, her extensive training and the fact that she helps get her students out there,’ she says. ‘Today’s clients require a mix of looks from soft to strong and from dewy English to Arabic, so I’m learning all the time just how diverse make-up artistry is; it’s an artistic expression of different cultures, moods and feelings,’ she considers. ‘With brides especially, the make-up artist has to be like a best friend. I hope I’m considered loyal, hard-working and a perfectionist. It’s all thanks to Saima for making my career dreams come true.’ •My bridal countdown tip:‘Living by good basics works wonders: that’s drinking lots of water; regular sleep; eating healthily; finding your best cleansing/ toning and facials routine well ahead of the big day.’ •My make-up tip:‘A great consultation acts as your guide to your ultimate image. Give yourself space to enjoy it as a one to one experience – too many others in the room giving different advice can be very distracting!’ •My trend tip:‘Bold, Arabic colours and what I call ‘smoky eyes with surprise’ – not just block black but black blended with purple, blues or reds. It’s a really flattering look.’

Director and Creative Manager Zakiya oversees fashion/beauty projects at the ever expanding academy. Together, the sisters share the salon’s busy schedule of managing day-to-day clients and brides. Based on their professional experience, they came up with Make-up Artistry training, which includes: an introduction to the art of make-up, overview of make-up tool kits available on the market; a demonstration of registry and evening make-ups; training on how to create a traditional and modern bridal image, and dupatta and jewellery setting lessons. AZ London also offers classes in contemporary and high-fashion make-up and the art of bridal and fashion hair styling. Importantly, the ladies insist on putting theoretical knowledge into practice by offering their students involvement in a photo-shoot with a model and complementary career advice at the end of the course. The latest exciting update involves a bevy of desirable venues inviting the duo to be their in-house, go-to girls for make-up glamour. My trend forecast in…

MANI KOHLI @ KHUBSOORAT www.khubsooratcollection.com

“Sophisticated salwars and churidars will be making a comeback next season.”

…fabrics and embellishments: I think fashion’s shifting more towards densely decorative brocades in a rainbow of shades. They work so well sculpted into very traditional looks – which never go away or out of date. With traditional wear, it’s never ‘wrong’ – being timeless, refined and appropriate for most every occasion. …colour palettes: Next season we will be seeing eye-catching bright primaries. One strong and flattering colour worn with subtle accents can really stand out in a crowd. In addition, more unusual and toned down pastels I predict will be popular. These are just made to complement the skin tone! …general style, silhouettes, or cuts: Looking ahead, fabric cuts are becoming ever more versatile and in

some cases, fabrics are allowed to flow into loose, swirling skirts. In complete contrast, very classic styles that are sharp and beautifully tailored will be around. This will include tailored, straight skirts that are still big in mainstream fashion. We will also see traditional cuts, well-tailored blouses and lenghas.

The beauty look to complement these trends:

I believe that a very crisp, immaculate look – pared down and polished – complements the latest style of dressing. Hair worn up away from the face in a glamorous updo frames this image style. Aiming for subtle makeup balancing eyes and lips, I think most complements rich fabrics and decorative work.

… fabrics and embellishments: One of the biggest trends I shall be showcasing next season is the latest take on lace. This season it spans traditional to contemporary, exquisite layered lace to eye-catching three dimensional fabric effects and lace as final embellishment. Ladylike and alluring, this season lace makes an unmatchable fabric choice! Pearl work complements it very well. … colour palettes: On a personal note, I will be featuring three different collections spanning all the main style themes. This will include an elegant vintage collection in dreamy creams and champagne shades; an exclusive palette of muted earthy greens and a traditional range of ruby wines and reds through to parrot greens and regal purples.

… general style, silhouettes, or cuts: Chiffons’ signature is our take on fusion wear that you won’t see anywhere else. Even the traditional is designed with a twist in that it won’t be conventional. As for what’s on-trend: a mix of everything from fitted bodices with flowing skirts to slim silhouettes with clever volume features. Lengths will be very ‘maxi’ - even down to trailing skirts; a lengha worn with long top or long jacket and long skirt combinations all add up to figure-flattering new looks..

The beauty look to complement these trends:

The refined fashion image seems suited to well-groomed, beautifully applied make-up that naturally enhances the features. If you aim for a look that’s ladylike and appropriate to the occasion, a gracious image will result!

HAIR AND MAKE-UP BY MARLENE ANDERSSON

When you think of the perfect top to toe image, it’s a great marriage of fashion savvy with beauty know-how…

NABILA FAYAAZ @ SEASONS www.seasons-adw.co.uk

“Next season I think we will see a complete cross-section of traditional and contemporary wear!”

My trend forecast in…

… fabrics and embellishments:We will have the new Pakistan inspired collection featuring a gorgeous array of georgettes and chiffons, rich velvets to the latest crushed effect fabrics. As always, there will be a lot of traditional work, with glittering Swarovski detail and stonework accents. An interesting trend we’re highlighting is a rich, textured look to embellishment: prints first picked out with embroidery, and encrusted with jewels on top. … colour palettes: A two-tone colour combination is a strong influence and creates double impact! In addition, emerald green, bird of paradise blues to purple, fuchsia and dark berry shades are big news. This bold colour palette will carry through alongside a lighter range for summer in shades of gold, cream, ivory and some shimmers.

… general style, silhouettes, or cuts: Next season I think that a fluid, flowing feel’s going to be ‘in’. The longer length ‘maxi’ style has been a hit in mainstream fashion and now it’s crossing over with a twist, into fusion fashion. Worn as a gown or in combination with the churidar, it also goes hand in hand with a layered silhouette. Also look out for the feminine ‘empire’ line – seaming placed under the bust-line for a pretty look to the top half.

The beauty look to complement these trends:

In my view, smokey, dark-rimmed eyes would complement the summer collection. Strong eyes and styling that tones colour to outfit, fits perfectly with winter berries, reds and golds. Hair can be worn up or down - but full of volume to complement the look.

“New fashions are constantly coming out; brides however, should not wait to the last minute to pick their bridal wardrobe.Time is always needed for alterations and in accessorising.”

Trends

My trend forecast in…

… fabrics and embellishments: Lots of lace, net and 3D effect fabric with stand-out motifs such as flowers. As a designer I go to India and source distinctive fabrics there which give inspiration. … colour palettes: Royal colours will be extremely popular with brides. Pastels will also remain in fashion...tea greens and very light pinks. I also like to mix frost colours and different embroideries. … general style, silhouettes, or cuts: Sleeker looks that come out at the bottom rather than from the waist. Straight skirts matched with jackets not rigid with a stiff neckline but soft in effect.

The beauty look to complement these trends:

With the accent on sophistication, images next season are fitted and sleek. Beauty’s best themed in the same way – polished and high maintenance.

FIROZA @ ZEBAISH www.zebaishlondon.com

Trends for next season’s bride will include a lot of elegant anarkalies, chic churidar suits and lenghas featuring exquisite embellishment.

… fabrics and embellishments: A lot of gleaming velvets, fancy nets and ornamental brocades will be in fashion next season. The focus of other pieces will be very intricate jewel work – almost like jewellery and fashion combined. Other outfits will concentrate on presenting different and fabulous versions of classic embroidery – like wearable works of art, almost! … colour palettes: The brightest and most joyful of bridal colours will take pride of place in my collection. Vivid fuchsia and orange to jewel-like tones with royal connotations: deep emerald, amethyst purple. … general style, silhouettes, or cuts: Whether slim-cut and body-conscious or cut with more volume, women of all shapes and sizes should be happy with the wow-factor styles that are set for next season! It’s a time of great choice across the design spectrum – whether in referencing the past or being more fashion-forward and a little experimental with clothes in general.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP BY SHAHNAZ YAQUB

My trend forecast in…

The beauty look to complement these trends:

With the spotlight firmly on rich and ornate evening and bridal-wear, often dripping with crystal, strong eyes and subtle lips work best. I think big up-dos would look fabulous and romantic with any of my Mughal inspired collection. A bold touch with make-up and hair-styling is perhaps needed to match the grandeur of some of the more majestic looking outfits.’

‘Whether worn traditionally for the wedding day or more glammed up for the registry, this gown is literally a perfect fit! A feminine net and lace ivory creation guaranteed to make a ladylike fashion statement. The particular way it is shaped – fitted and flared through the hips – is sure to enhance your waistline for a slinky, slim look. Beauty tip... ‘For a balanced top to toe image, it’s always important to match the ‘feel’ of the make-up to the outfit. Here, to complement the simple, clean lines of the dress and its pearl embellishment, I teamed it with a soft cream and earthy colour palette. With sheer skin and creamy nude lipstick, the result is a natural, flawless finish. To keep the whole face and eye area soft, avoid khol or gel liner under the lower lashes.’

Jewellery tip… ‘Choosing jewellery is such a personal choice and how to sparkle on the occasion of your engagement is just as important as your bridal set. Why not opt to make each occasion distinct in colour theme? Your jewellery wardrobe could begin with clear diamante – so flattering to every skin tone. Pretty hair-pieces are the latest trend – and an elegant highlight to your make-up. Choose as standalone accessory or co-ordinate with dramatic collar necklace and earrings.’

Nisha @ Kyles collections www.kylescollection.com

“The blues spectrum is wide-ranging – with shades to suit all colourings.” Chand @ Khushboos

Beauty tip... ‘It doesn’t always have to be an either/or situation between matching your make-up to the outfit or to the embroidery sometimes you can colour coordinate with both. Rich blue eye shades tie in with the outfit while softer pink lip and cheek colour offsets the embroidery. By using natural mineral products, skin looks natural and glowing. It all works especially well because the jewellery seen above and below the make-up, is neutral in tone.’

Made in net fabric, exquisite embroidery features resham work, dhabka and original Swarovski elements. The overall silhouette is refined yet eye-catching. The perfect outfit for your walima or civil marriage.’

Designer tip... ‘For special occasions such as the walima or bridal ceremony, the fishtail skirt style is an evergreen classic. My latest version - a 10 kali or panelled lengha - is exceptionally glamorous. The cut is exact for a neat fit on the velvet bodice, complementing the highly exaggerated lines of the foxy fishtail skirt. Presented in deluxe jamavar fabric, the outfit features lame qpplique on the borders. Other ornate embellishment involves delicate kasab, zardosi and ari work.’

Jewellery tip...

‘Consider the size and shape of jewellery and the type of style statement you wish to make. Where size is concerned, you may wish to strike a balance between your outfit embellishment and accessories, so that they are not all in competition! Remember that jewels are meant to be face-framing, so enjoy trying on lots of designs. Whether bold and ornate or simple and delicate, opt for pieces that really flatter your unique features.’

‘Such striking outfit colours inspired me to coordinate with a sultry green and smoky eye shadow palette. (Mac’s Mineralise range has a wonderful wide array of bold colour pigments – see Swimming, Humid and Smutty Green shades). The eyes and skin are of equal importance. A few layers of a full coverage foundation gives a radiant, day-long finish. Frost highlighter and iced pink lips add a natural gleam – which in turn accentuates the pretty crystal jewellery.’

Jewellery tip... ‘Your wedding day means wearing your ultimate jewellery wardrobe. It should perfectly set off your outfit without ‘taking over’ and enhance your face and hair. Glowing red stones bring the complexion alive and their richness and splendour remind us of Rani style rubies. Today’s bride can have any accessory style she desires. A traditional ‘chandelier’ style setting is a timeless design. The set shown here features an intricate hair-band, collar and drop earrings with exquisite teardrop trim.’

Beauty tip... ‘The traditional Asian bridal image is stunning in its joyful use of colour. Both red and blue have regal associations so with this in mind, I tried to achieve a royal look with a hint of contemporary. Influenced by the dramatic impact of the lengha, I picked up on the colours in reverse…I used the blue accents as the main focus of the eyes in Bobbi Brown’s Navy shade, with a touch of red above.’

The Mughal image is one of opulence and attention to detail. Our interpretation is in rich magenta with royal blue trim and shimmers in net and brocade. The embroidery is especially vivid in a mix of crystal, thread and velvet patchwork. The matching dupatta adds the perfect finishing touch.’

…to our exclusive new Make-up Artist section. VIYA gives you all the essential facts on being successful in make-up and hair styling in the beauty industry How often have you studied the fabulous looking models in the beauty pages of your favourite magazine – the gorgeously dressed hair, the flawless skin, the stunning eye and lip colours – and thought how great it must be to create those looks, to work as a make-up artist for a living? There’s no doubt that the world of make-up is a glamorous one and that the rewards of working in the industry can be great – but as with everything worthwhile, it can be just as demanding. We see the surface result, the great image; not the twelve hours it took to create the look in a studio - or the training it took to get there. However, it’s a visual world and with artistic make-up, beauty and hair creations everywhere – from the pages of the glossies and on billboards, from TV to cinema – careers in this creative sector are more popular than ever. It’s true to say this equals more opportunities than ever at all different levels; suitable for all types of personalities and capabilities and backgrounds. It’s a career arena with many corners: from make-up artist on the counter at big name beauty brands in department stores to mobile bridal make-up artist; from working freelance for TV, film and theatre and behind the scenes at catwalk shows, to name a few. It can be as high flying as you care to dream…there’s always the chance to really make it and wake up making up famous faces, travelling the world, earning a fortune and a

great reputation, isn’t there? Like everything else, yes, it can happen - for the lucky few. Though not everyone will be the next make-up artist with their own cosmetic range and their name in lights, there’s still a lot of diverse make-up work available out there. This obviously makes things more competitive and it’s important to increase your chances of success by taking steps to plan the career path that’s appropriate for you. Once you’ve decided that it truly is your passion and that you have the right temperament to handle it – patience and stamina for long hours, to being a good listener and team player are just some assets you’ll need – the next step is to consider what line of work you’re interested in. Here you’ll find up to date, important industry information on the subjects that matter. Nothing beats hearing how it is from the top – so what better way to start than with an interview with M·A·C senior makeup artist, Neil Young. of working in the industry to how it’s quickly changing and of course, how it feels to be a red carpet make-up artist! There’s also the lowdown on those covetable M·A·C Pro Discount cards used by those in the know… Next follows The Essential Guide – advice and guidance on key topics of interest. THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE Everything the make-up artist needs to know – and more – on the essential aspects of making it in the world of beauty ...

Tools of the trade…

The importance of a great make-up kit cannot be over-estimated. Everything from the products and applicators must be of good quality and maintained in impeccable working order. Your kit is seen as an extension of you and your reputation rests on it! Products & Brushes: Premium brand cosmetics are your stock in trade and clients will quickly pick up what you’re using on their face! Choose those with quality ingredients, in an extensive range of colours that won’t let you down: ranges such as Mac, Bobbi Brown, Nars, Supercover, Givenchy, Chanel, etc are good starting points. You don’t have to own every new colour that comes out but at the least you should have ‘classics’ suitable for any skin type/colouring/condition. In addition, think ahead to match your kit to the occasion/assignment/ lighting and camera needs – a bridal look differs from high fashion catwalk, which differs again from studio-lit photo-shoot, for example. Plus you’ll need specialist, hypo-allergenic products for clients with special needs or allergies (see below). The make-up you use is your basic investment – don’t be tempted to skimp to save money on less expensive brands. As a make-up artist, mid-top end expensive does equal effective. Or according to one leading make-up artist, ‘Cheap is expensive in the long run but expensive is cheap.’ Like an artist with their paints and brushes, each part is as good as the other. To complement your product, your brush selection should be great quality, with the addition of disposable make-up brush sets, sponges, spatulas, cotton buds, to sanitisers and brush cleaners. A basic first aid kit to cover any eventuality comes in handy, too. Carry your kit in a sturdy storage case – fishing tackle boxes make great alternatives – and use them trolley mounted – more practical for assignments on the go.

Hygiene…

Sterilised. Clean and germ-free. Presentable. These are your watchwords for keeping your kit fit to be seen and used at any time. Think of cleanliness as your health and safety insurance. Let standards drop and you risk cross-contamination and infection. Your reputation’s at stake

and as one celebrity make-up artist said: ‘Don’t risk damaging your career by any possibility of infection to the client.’ As industry website www. promakeupshop.com say: ‘To practise safe beauty, you must ensure you are not “double dipping” and therefore contaminating your clients and products with potential germs and bacteria.’ As a basic daily routine, all make-up brushes must be sanitised between clients and at the end of the day, left to dry naturally before re-use. For days when time’s at a premium, consider using portable cosmetic ‘wash and dry and ready’ brush cleaners. Otherwise, try cleaning with an anti-bacterial washing-up liquid in warm water for all re-usable items across foundation, concealer, lipstick. Rinse well and avoid mildew by taking care to dry by airing at a 360 degree angle – not on a towel. Lipsticks and pencils need to be sterilised, pencils sharpened, make-up box tidied. Eyes are particularly sensitive to infection, therefore disposable mascara wands - as with other disposable and single-use make-up brushes and applicators – are a must. Latest industry guidelines stress the importance of product sell-by dates. Like food, once cosmetics are open, they naturally go off over time. With mascara end dates at three months, lipsticks around six, it makes sense to list purchase dates of your cosmetic shopping so that you know when stock needs replenishing.

Allergies… All clients are individuals with different, sometimes specialist, needs. This is where you have to be ahead of the game and think outside of the box a little. It makes sense beforehand to ask your client whether they have any allergies or special needs. Assume they may have and be prepared. Product-wise, this could mean anything from non-comedogenic (nonclogging) skin-care to opthamologically tested eye ranges to cruelty-free items say, if the client’s vegan. With foundations, take several variants rather than one single brand. (Be aware that in some skin types, SPFs in creams, foundations and even concealers, can be allergy triggers). Eyes in particular can trigger bad reactions – clients can be allergic to latex used in false lash glue. Carry latex-free eyelash glue, just in case. Sometimes they may not even be aware of it so use your judgement before getting carried away round the eye area! Bear in mind when dealing with brides they can be super-sensitive to ingredients or unfamiliar brands as they’re often in a state of nerves – ask in advance what brands they usually use and any they knowingly avoid. If you haven’t something crucial at the time, it’s often too late. Don’t become unstuck... work to cultivate a resourceful, holistic approach to ensure all bases are covered.

VIYA M.U.A In association with

Customer service…

As well as your make-up flair and artistry, it’s equally important to provide good customer service. In essence, this is a combination of people skills and business acumen. Be respectful of your customer’s time and lifestyle. It goes without saying to be punctual, listen to her requirements in advance to build up a ‘customer profile’, to take the right kit and to gain the best results. On the day, discuss with her the agreed look before you begin and advise where necessary. Treat the client as you would wish to be treated yourself. If it’s more of a corporate, catwalk or studio booking, go with the flow of the situation – often an atmosphere of quiet efficiency, if under pressure of deadline. On the business side, much as you love it, your service is a business, which means taking care of your financial self. Pricing your job can feel awkward when first starting out but remember that people only value that which they pay for. Google research what other comparable make-up artists are charging in the area or find out what price is par for the course in your make-up field – professional bodies can tell you this. Equally remember, you can’t go in at the top end and not deliver – you have to be as good as the value you put on yourself. Corporate clients are likely to offer a fee; for private clients, you will need to set the fee. Once decided, where possible, email your payment terms and conditions to the client in advance and present it as a given for them to proceed or not. Invoice them at the time or shortly after and send a thank-you/ hoping to work again with them note on receipt of payment. It pays to be professional, reliable and courteous. Keep all invoices for book-keeping/tax filing and in addition, keep a separate logbook of jobs done detailing date, client briefing, make-up used, etc as your hopefully ever-growing client record. Listen and respond positively to feedback. Every client’s a lesson – always be prepared to learn from them.

Understanding the bride’s needs…

Perhaps more than any client, not only does the bride want to look good, they want to feel great, too. As any good bridal make-up artist will tell you, there’s a real art to this type of booking that goes beyond the actual cosmetic transformation. Creating the right environment and appropriate connection with the bride and her extended family and friends is crucial. It may be a long function you’re servicing, so start as you mean to go on. The nervous bride – often a bag of nerves - needs to be able to relax in your hands. Presumably, following the bridal trial you will have established a bond with her prior to the big day and be well equipped with anything the wedding celebrations may have in store. Double-check the specialist side of your kit for sensitive skin products – and don’t forget the emergency kit. Where the bride’s key looks are concerned, obviously address any concerns with her beforehand. Remember that weddings – and Asian weddings in particular – are often photographed differently. Therefore the make-up has to perform in a number of different ways. Functional as well as flattering, it has to be long-lasting, tear-proof and react well in outdoor and indoor lighting, with a suitable camera-ready finish. It’s a tall order! For the make-up artist, there is nothing quite like a beautiful bride as your ultimate showcase of your work. Such a job well done will be seen by maybe hundreds of guests and if you’re lucky, word of mouth may mean repeat requests. A fabulous advert, indeed!

Importance of the make-up trial…

As established in Understanding The Bride’s Needs, it is important for a bride – indeed any new client - to know upfront exactly what they are getting from their make-up artist. It’s therefore worth visualising the situation in reverse… how would you like to be treated by a make-up artist, what would you like to get out of a make-up trial? Thinking in this way may help you see things better from a professional viewpoint – and come up with the best make-up solution. To build the right rapport and relationship with your client is often half of the battle in the beauty business, after all! In any case, it’s essential to understand and above all, listen to, the client. It may be useful to draw up a general ‘client brief’ to fill out by potential customers. First, define their individual needs and requirements and establish the occasion. Interview them a little – would they prefer a heavy, traditional make-up or maybe they’d prefer something more natural and soft? Find out the client’s skin type and beauty routine and adjust products/ techniques to suit. The information you receive in preparation will prove invaluable before setting off to do the actual job. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to impress your client at the all-important make-up trial.

Importance of the portfolio… The importance of creating and owning a quality professional portfolio cannot be stressed enough. As a reflection of you and your work, it is your overall advertisement – your ultimate demonstration tool to show people exactly what you can do. It is an instant sum-up of your flair and ability, your unique marketing ‘brand’; assessed in an instant by busy creatives used to making quick, instinctive judgements on whether you’re up to their job - based on its contents. As your most useful tool in selling your services, potential clients will look at it with interest and a critical eye for technical and artistic know-how. Make-up application and style, use of colour, originality, ability to work to a brief, flair in any particular direction – fashion to editorial to all kinds of clientele from bridal to corporate, etc. As well as being judged on your own merits, your portfolio may well be judged against others – it’s a highly competitive industry. In order to get premium results, the best way to try to capture the X factor everyone’s looking for is in the first place to work with the correct team of photographer, stylist, and models. It’s no co-incidence that all leading academies and make-up artists go to magazines to get their shoots done professionally as they deliver the highest quality. With a professional and experienced team on hand they will guide, advise and work with you through the process to deliver great results. (In contrast, it’s worth pointing out the pitfalls of trying to cut corners here. Opting instead for private, less regulated shoots, may not always deliver to the highest standard). Think of your portfolio as an investment and the equivalent of your shop front. Like a visual CV, treat it as a living and breathing collection of your most fabulous images that you will add and subtract to over time. Show only the very best highlights of your MUA career – and enjoy building your very own version of the perfect portfolio.

THE Q

With sensible, professional advice from one of the best in the beauty business, Zaiba Khan answers your questions on becoming a make-up artist.

EXPERT

I’m an aspiring make-up artist - with no idea where to start. Can you advise me on how to break into it… as well as how to get contacts and training?

First immerse yourself in the world of make-up to see if it’s suitable for you and you for it! Research industry bodies for useful information – the contacts page in this MUA section is a good starting point. If you wish to take it further, read up on potential courses. Practice makes perfect with make-up, so why not become a Saturday girl on a department store beauty counter – a great way to learn.

Q

As a make-up artist at the start of my career, how can I get noticed and stand out?

The make-up world is a competitive one – but there are recognised ways of getting your makeup business message across. This ties in with networking, marketing and promotion. As it’s a visual industry, the usual first step is investing in a strong portfolio, essential in reflecting your abilities. Next it makes sense to create a professional website and Facebook

presence. Business link Linked In is another good idea to join on-line. Look for tie-ins with local businesses. Further along, perhaps consider media advertising to reach a wider audience. Be entrepreneurial in approach!

Q

I want to make a name for myself as a bridal hair and make-up artist. In your view, how does it differ from other areas? Bridal work can be most rewarding – with the right personality. As well as specific make-up artist skill and artistry, you will need to be a people person and have much patience. Brides are often understandably nervous so a mature outlook, sensitivity and stamina for long, working days are necessary. One advantage is that by making a success of one wedding alone, it’s a great shop-front – many word of mouth bookings may follow in due course!

Q

How much M.U.A experience do you need to work on the fashion side?

Creating that fab fashion image is for the experienced, artistic make-up artist, rather than the beginner. It requires know-how of camera-ready make-up that’s perfect every shot. Whether for the catwalk or editorial, it involves working to a specific creative brief, with quick changes, as part of a dedicated team, often for long hours. Not something to do overnight – but aspirational to aim for.

Q

Do you recommend doing hair and make-up courses simultaneously or separate? I would say it depends on how much time you have each week to practice and if you can dedicate yourself to both courses at the same time. If you are a true beginner, I would suggest you start with the make-up course, it will give you access to the beauty foundations, help you understand face and skin types, and explain how these factors influence the work of a make-up artist.

Making it as a Make-Up Artist

One of the top beauty brands in the world M·A·C has been in the business for over 25 years. What better way to celebrate than to gain insider knowledge and advice on cutting it in this rewarding but competitive, creative industry, from M·A·C senior make-up artist, Neil Young… was your beauty background QWhat before working with M·A·C? Self -taught to start with. I’ve been a makeup artist for 19 years and before coming to London I was based in Birmingham. In my 12 years as a freelance I enjoyed gaining valuable experience and worked my way up for brands in department stores and across fashion, magazines and shows. From wedding make-up for family and friends, I gained personal clients and was involved in many other events from charity dos to style occasions. It was all a good training ground!

M·A·C representative across the UK QAsandaIreland, what does your role involve? In the past seven years I’ve been with M·A·C, my present position is like that of a brand ambassador. There are six of us in the UK, 70 around the world. As a top global brand, over 12,000 make-up artists work for M·A·C across 78 countries. To be a senior artist requires

the skills you need as a make-up artist, times 100! In short, that’s excellent make-up artistry, dedication, discipline and energy with at this level, the added facet of communication skills. One day I can be demonstrating master classes in make-up, the next on assignment travelling to a show abroad, the next giving an industry interview. An important part of my role involves reaching out to different sectors – talking to press and media, theatre, film, fashion, models and celebrities. It’s multi-faceted and an amazing position. Tiring but rewarding!

have been favourite career QWhat highlights so far? As the M·A·C brand represents every segment of industry, there’s a variety of opportunity ‒ especially in the beauty/fashion areas such as photographic, editorial and red carpet. I love Fashion Week work in New York, London, Paris and Milan, on designer shows such as Roberto Cavalli to Chloe, Christopher Kane to Donna Karan and Vivienne Westwood. I like making up personal clients such as actress Helen Mirren for star appearances. As M·A·C is official sponsor of the International Indian Film Awards, this year for three days in Toronto, I looked after hot new Bollywood actress Anoushka Sharma, who was great fun! My all-time highlight has to be meeting and working with my idol, supermodel Linda Evangelista. She’s an extraordinary beauty who was one of our spokespeople for the M·A·C Aids Fund.

Q

What mistakes/misconceptions are most common with would-be make-up artists?

First, it seems that everyone wants to be a make-up artist! It’s like todays ‘in’ job. It’s an art and a craft in which only the few make it to the very top. However, the good news is that with so many make-up career branches, there’s always a way to make a living for the right person. Young people considering entering the profession I think have a slight misconception in thinking it’s completely glamorous; it can be – but also incredibly demanding in terms of long days and in achieving particular artistic briefs. For a makeup artist to make it, not only is it about talent, it’s equally about temperament. First and foremost, you need to be a listener, a people person and

team player, willing to work hard to get where you aim to be. Make-up artistry is a service and there’s no room for divas here!

your advice on gaining essential QWhat’s experience? Practice, practice, practice. It sounds obvious but every face you work on is different and each time it teaches you something new. In the same way, working for cosmetic brands in department stores is a great step to take. It makes you learn about different ages, races, faces. From the basics to special techniques, it’s a useful lesson in the whole art and craft of making up. A frequent beginners’ fault is trying too hard to impress by always maximising make-up effects. It’s far more important to be able to make any woman who comes to a beauty counter look great. Sometimes less is more and outside of high fashion make-up, it can be better to aim for understated looks suited to the individual. Bridal make-up for friends and family is also another route to perfecting your ability on a number of levels. Unlike working on models, the wedding look is about making real women look their beautiful best. On top of that you are befriending the bride through her incredibly unique and special time and may have to calm her nerves. It’s the perfect process for teaching you how to get on and be professional with the bride and family, making people feel wonderful about themselves in a pressured situation.

top tips for today’s make-up artists QYour in how to be the best in this competitive and changing creative world?

Start as you mean to go on and form the right winning attitude. Be prepared to do anything to progress – hold the lights, fetch the model’s lunch, be positive and pro-active. Think not as a solo artist but as being part of a creative team. The hot topic is that the industry in general’s changing with the result that technology can take over. The media’s opening up to a whole new world and it pays to be aware of how affecting it can be. Magazines are going online and there’s a big ‘virtual’ vibe. There’s increasing competition and access. Internet lessons instruct on ‘how to get the look’ encouraging people to be empowered to do

DISCOVER their own make-up. Therefore, whatever part of the industry you choose to go into, you have to set your standards high. It also pays to keep on top of fashion. Buy and read stylish magazines for news on trends and ever-changing information on topical subjects such as skincare, colours, new styles of make-up application and products. Be ahead of the game.

the pros and cons, is making it in QDespite the make-up world still worth it? It can be exhausting, particular and timeconsuming. It can mean meeting different people and travelling all over the world. It’s about fun and fashion and hard work and service. The make-up world’s literally full of different colours. However, the wonderful result is that as a creative career, it’s rewarding in variety and interest. To get up every day and get paid for doing a job you’re passionate about is quite a unique experience…

any guiding thoughts on choosing QFinally, the best make-up courses? As a youngster starting out, certainly in my hometown of Birmingham, not that many training schools and courses existed then. Therefore I taught myself the basics. In comparison, there are many great courses around today but you have to be aware that some do not set you up in the right way… To try to get the best available in your area, before parting with any of the costs, you owe it to yourself to do your research first. Make comparisons between courses and find out the content: what are they actually providing? What’s the teacher’s profile? Does it matter to you whether it’s accredited or not? Ask necessary questions to make informed decisions. Get on a course that offers solid insight into beauty. Decide what style of makeup you want to go in for and if you don’t yet know, a good starting point is a make-up course that covers photography. Camera ready make-up is what binds all areas of make-up together – whether bridal or commercial. By understanding how lighting works, how colour balances turn things into black and white and alter the make-up application, it’s more likely to set you up for success.

PARV KALYAN

We caught up with Parv Kalyan, the creative talent behind MW Eventz... WHAT INSPIRED YOU INTO THIS CAREER PATH? ‘One of the courses I took at school included Body Art from around the world. This gave me a lot of insight and introduced me to a wealth of information concerning brides and grooms. I began to attend many family and friends’ weddings, and was often asked to participate as the henna artist. Clients in Bedfordshire would also ask me to recommend wedding service providers – and it was then that I realised there was a gap in the local market. Recognised for my natural flair for henna art and ability to accommodate the needs of even the most demanding brides, I soon became the “mehndi wala,” or the henna guy. This name stuck and seemed to work to my advantage, as my job schedule increased every month. That is why I decided to work under brand name MW Eventz’

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATION…HAS ANY ARTIST OR LOOK INFLUENCED YOU IN PARTICULAR? ‘Listening to the client is always very inspiring – hearing their story, how they met, fell in love...Bearing all this information in mind, I can add meaningful personal touches and detail to my work. My first priority is to deliver whatever the clients wish. I leave the choice of design in their hands but I am prepared to guide them, if necessary. It’s a very collaborative approach as my clients trust me. Décor and henna can be matched to a bride’s outfit – if it is embellished with a traditional finish, I can design décor around an antique theme, using beautiful pillars for example. If a wedding party has a certain theme in mind, I can create bespoke items and customise props and products accordingly. All brides have a different wedding dream… some prefer contemporary style, while others take the traditional route. Either way, I am here to help out – in every style!’ WHEN IT COMES TO HENNA, WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE AND ENDORSE? ‘I take henna art very seriously and have been researching it for years. On my trips to India, I was able to source the finest henna. I also discovered that the best henna ingredients are found in India. I have been ordering it from there ever since. Tried and tested methods mean that I’m able to choose the right products and offer a colour guarantee and quality.’ WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? ‘In five years, I hope to go international with henna and wedding events. I hope to grow the team to provide more brides-to-be with a personal service. I’m also hoping to open an academy to teach, promote and share my knowledge. I would like to see MW Eventz operating on a global scale... There is no limit to where we could go!’ MW EVENTZ 07708 745670 * 07925 495106 www.mweventz.com enquiries@mweventz.com 184 VIYA BEAUTIFUL

HOW DID THE BRAND EXPAND AND PROGRESS INTO THE SUCCESS IT IS TODAY? ‘I went to university to get a degree in media production, which allowed me to develop my technical abilities and become more business aware. Soon after I discovered my interest and talent in henna art. I also felt I understood this art from a bride’s perspective, which allowed me to tailor my service to the demands of the market. I also noticed the lack of Asian wedding services in the Bedfordshire area. From the age of 16, I wanted to be a success and I knew when the time was right to start my own venture. I pitched my idea for a business grant and was awarded a placement on a scheme that provided me with mentoring, advice and a financial contribution. Since then, I have developed the brand so that we offer a one-stop solution. From the initial henna service, it’s gone full circle with the introduction of wedding planning, wedding stages, mandaps, chair covers, fresh flower displays and lighting. From organisation to decoration, it’s all in-house.’

Advice

the

Whatever your beauty query - from face and body to anti-ageing or how to achieve a diva-like evening image - Attia of AZ London’s our beauty go-to girl.

INISHING

TOUCHES Q

As an Asian bride I am struggling to find the perfect foundation. My makeup artist cannot advise me as she is only covering my wedding day look but I need an everyday foundation. What is the correct procedure when purchasing the right foundation for my skin tone?

It really upsets me when I hear stories like this. A professional make-up artist on your very first visit should cover your foundation base regardless of whether it is for your wedding day or every day. However, the procedure for purchasing the correct foundation is to go to a department store where you can actually try on the color before purchasing. If you can, then take a mirror and walk outdoors to see how the foundation looks in daylight. One thing to keep in mind is that you should never be able to see foundation but it should simply blend into your skin tone. For Asian skins avoid pink under tones and do not go any lighter than your skin tone as it will look gray and ashy on the skin.

Q

I’m 28. When should I start using anti-aging products?

Q

How can I turn my simple day look into a more glamorous evening look?

Q

I am suffering from ingrown hair…how can I get rid of it?

Q

Is it necessary for my body lotion to contain firming agents?

When it comes to anti-aging prevention is the key. What is important for women is to sustain collagen and elasticity in order to keep the skin looking plump and firm. You can start in your early 20s by having regular complete facials: Guinot’s Hydradermie is a fine example. It is a salon based facial which not only gives you in-depth cleansing and hydration but the delicate galvanic currents massaging the face with firming gels will leave your skin looking firmer, smoother, rested and glowing.

First, apply some powder to remove any oils and residues that have built up during the course of the day. Black liquid eyeliner with some dark eye shadow finished with a pair of strip lashes is a fast and easy way to dramatise eyes for the evening. Finally apply a deeper-toned lipstick with matching lip liner for definition. This will change you from the girl next door into a sophisticated diva!

Ingrown hair can be caused by waxing, shaving, tweezing and even hair removal creams. The best way to avoid ingrown hairs is to exfoliate before your hair removal treatment and then exfoliate with a loofah or body scrub after each time you shower. This stimulates the skin and keeps the pores open. Also avoid using heavy moisturisers a few hours after hair removal and exfoliation as this will clog the pores.

There is no evidence that quotes that lotions with firming agents produce long term effects. However, firming lotions do moisturise the skin very well providing instant rehydration and improving the appearance of the skin temporarily. For satisfying results exercise and drinking plenty of water is key as although antioxidants added to some formulas may help reduce collagen breakdown, they do not necessarily stimulate new collagen.
