Here are a few of our judges from the panel…
“It will be such a pleasure to give newcomers a chance and guide them through their journey into the beauty industry.” IBRIZ KHAN Ibriz is glad she swapped her life as an investment banker for something altogether more glamorous... I graduated from university with a BA hons in Business and Finance and then went to work for an investment bank. However, I quickly realised that although the money was fantastic, I wanted to do something creative. Whilst working I did a part time post grad in interior design, this made me realise I wanted to be in a more creative industry. I went on to train on a one-to-one basis with the Ather Shahzad Academy in Lahore. I then went on to set up Zara’s Catering, which has become a very successful events company. I’m very passionate about every project I take on, making sure it’s done to the very highest standard. My training academy was a natural progression for me, and the satisfaction from teaching my pupils is immense. That’s why I am very honored to have been asked to be part of the prestigious Viya Beauty Awards. I think we have immense raw talent in this country, though the resources are not always available to further aspirations. To be able to give these newcomers a chance and guide them through their journey into the beauty industry will be such a pleasure. www.ibrizkhan.com

“I know all about the transformation that takes place in an individual when they choose a career in beauty.” ZAIBA KHAN Zaiba started her career as a legal eagle, but after turning her passion for make-up into a successful business she hasn’t looked back... I came from a legal background and practised law for eight years. However, I always had an interest in hair and beauty, so I took on a part time evening class in beauty therapy. I learned the basics in make-up but wanted to extend my knowledge further so I took up a makeup course with Jemma Kidd Make-Up School, which included beauty, catwalk and vintage techniques. I then pursued a career with MAC Cosmetics as a make-up artist, which included media and catwalk work, before moving into the bridal make up business. With lots of hard work, I soon built up a reputation amongst brides and became quite successful as a bridal expert. However, my creative ambitions and demand from my many satisfied customers led to me think about how I could pass on my skills and experience to girls that are in the position that I was in not so long ago. The result of this was the launch of the Zaiba Khan Training Academy, which I launched in 2010. I’m really looking forward to working with the Viya team for these Awards. I know all about the transformation that takes place in an individual when they choose a career in beauty.’ www.zaibakhan.co.uk

Meet some of our judges from the panel…
“This industry is really competitive, so it’s important for every make-up artist to offer something distinctive, to keep learning and think outside of the box.” NAFISA SULTAN Nafisa’s proof that with dedication, a parttime hobby can lead to full-time career satisfaction… Even whilst working at something completely different in finance, off-duty I enjoyed dabbling with make-up. What began as a hobby soon started to take over. From trying out how looks had been created on personalities and models, I began offering to make up friends and family. When by word of mouth I began to develop a client base, I knew that this was the career for me. ‘This industry is really competitive, so it’s important for every make-up artist to offer something distinctive, to keep learning and think outside of the box. For example, to extend my range, I trained in hair styling with Marush, and I like to play and experiment with new colour palettes. Also, the most recurring compliment I receive is that I’m a people person – I guess I’m not just technically proficient but like to connect with every client and their experience – good or bad. Sometimes it seems, my makeovers are on the inside as well as out! It’s thanks to all my clients over five years persuading me to demonstrate make-up application that teaching’s my latest calling. I love to communicate so sharing my knowledge with students is very gratifying. In the same way, I admire the aims of the Viya Beauty Awards – it’s about empowerment, isn’t it?’ www.nafisasultan.com

“I’m proof that from brave first decisions and immense hard work, great things can grow.” SAIMA AKRAM Saima combined her travel experience and beauty training to create her own global beauty academy group… Passionate about make up from a very young age, I was determined to get into the beauty industry - and yet do things in my own way. Unable to find quite the right training, I basically taught myself. I became absorbed in magazines and media, discovering all I could about the best make-up brands to the latest tips, trends and techniques. Being interested and informed in the art of beauty - from traditional to contemporary, and from East to West - I think added to my skills base. I’m proof that from brave first decisions and immense hard work, great things can grow. I decided early on to go for it and open my own beauty salon in Pakistan. From this success I realised I wanted to develop an international brand so a decade later, I’m now in the position of heading my own training academies in several major cities of the world. I also get the chance to work on beautiful celebrity faces such as Noor, Zara Sheikh, Atif Aslam, Laila Rouass, Shan and Ali Zafar! There is no short-cut to success and it can be hard for newcomers to the industry - but I believe that the Viya Beauty Awards may be vital in spotting the talent of tomorrow. www.saima-akram.com

Interview
At home with designer
NABILA FAYAAZ Hair and Make-up by Marlene Anderson
Glamorous Nabila of the stylish Seasons brand reveals what’s in store – and how home is where the heart is…
T
he first thing you notice about Nabila is that different sides of her life all share the same distinct sense of style. The flattering way she dresses is a great reflection of the way she runs her fashion business, which in turn reflects how she manages her lovely looking home. Like something out of the pages of ‘Hello!’ magazine, Nabila’s classic, detached house in an enviable part of Essex, she designed and project-managed herself over the course of ten months, six years ago. ‘It was an empty shell,’ she remembers, ‘we built it from the ground up and it was a labour of love.’ It’s obvious that a lot of love has gone into the concept inside and out. From the interior with its five en-suite bedrooms and two walk in wardrobe spaces, to the cinema room, an orangery style conservatory and kitchen that opens into a garden with decking and seating just right for gatherings. Nabila’s keen to stress that it’s a ‘welcoming, lived-in, comfortable family home rather than some huge, sprawling show house.’ As such, she hosted her sister’s wedding - with 300 in the garden - and her subsequent baby shower on-site: ‘lots of life and happiness has happened here,’ she says.
28
Due to her dream home being such a showcase to her innate style, Nabila gets asked a lot by impressed visitors to revamp their residences. ‘I do like to dabble in interior design as an extension of styling,’ says Nabila, who graduated in the subject - along with visual merchandising - from London’s trendy Central Saint Martins College. ‘Design and fashion are like related interests to me,’ she continues. ‘It makes me happy whether I’m dressing a room or dressing a person. Like the muted palette of browns, beiges, chocolates and creams I have at home, I’ve now carried through to my upcoming ready to wear range.’ Which brings us neatly onto the subject of clothes…

Interview
S
easons’ next collection (in-store around January) will feature many new-look gowns sure to suit all ages, shapes and sizes, promises Nabila. ‘The plus point is that as well as looking great, they feel-good to wear,’ she says. ‘One of my favourite ever cuts is the bias cut because it’s so kind to curves! Designwise, it just wraps around the body for a lovely silhouette, without being uncomfortable.’ The Seasons’ style signature of the latest and funkiest fashion fusion is to carry through, with a strong focus on cuts and fabrics. ‘I always try to bring something new and innovative to the boutique,’ says Nabila. ‘I like to cater for the fashion-forward rather than the ‘run of the mill’. I prefer to be a trend-setter not a follower.’ As to her own style, Nabila prefers clean-cut, classical lines, ‘nothing too heavy or ostentatious.’ Some of her most-worn pieces are simple yet flattering, such as the feminine midnight-blue dress on the first page. ‘I tell my three daughters it’s far more elegant to cover up stylishly than to over-expose,’ she says. ‘I guess overall I’m a visual perfectionist, I like everything to look and be just right – whether it’s the way I dress, to how I style my home and boutique.’
FASHION TREND FORECAST NABILA’S TRENDS TO COME… Modern Cuts in Separates:
‘Look out for beautiful embellished velvet jackets with flowing, floor-length skirts. A unique and favourite style I’m introducing is what I call a ‘butler’ jacket or tail-coat in silk, to wear with velvet skirts. I predict it will be so popular it will fly out of the boutique door!’
Back to the Past Embroidery:
‘Heritage embroidery hand-crafted in my workshops in India will be big news – and in the mix with modern pieces.’
Prints Charming:
‘Mixing prints with different chiffons and georgettes for interesting variations of pattern and texture.’
Fabric Special Effects:
‘Drapes, trains and panels that radiate out in graceful movement round the body – sometimes with up to ten metres of fabric per design.’
Classic to Fashion Colours:
‘Flattering nudes and neutrals - creams, beiges, browns to warm golds – and also jewel hues - deep reds to royal purples. Plus mixes of fabrics and colours.’

F
urnishings, throws and interesting textiles apart, Nabila likes to keep her own home space pared-down and clutter-free. She has also been having something of a spring clean on the business-front - it’s set to be completely refurbished early next year. ‘Modernised throughout with a new racking system, flooring, lighting and the ground floor for fashion opened up and made more spacious,’ she explains. ‘In addition, there will be a new ‘unstitched’ range in the basement, featuring fabric pieces to buy alongside a tailoring service. There will also be a more extensive bridal range on the first floor – going from one style extreme to another!’ she laughs. The fashion forward side that Nabila’s known for will involve ‘east meets west cuts with lovely Swarovski detail. Some are Victorian, quite vintage, others are Vivienne Westwood style: swagged at the waist, corseted at the top, in creams and golds with antique embroidery.’
At the other end of the spectrum, expect very traditional Pakistani long jackets in brocade and tanchoi skirts in palettes of blues, teals, maroons, deep reds and golds. A regular range of ever-popular corset designs with heavy, embellished skirts are also in the offing, providing something for every taste. Seventeen years on from starting her successful business, Nabila says she is often inspired by ‘travelling, meeting people, and seeing different things.’ Recently returned from a buying trip in India, she was inspired by everyone in diwali clothes. ‘The vibe was very upbeat and the shops had strong designs,’ she says. ‘That’s just what I love – seeing what’s happening out east and re-interpreting it for the western market. Bringing together the best of both worlds.’

FIROZA PATHAN Talks about her brand Zeba’ish… Her boutiques are loved for their signature glitz, glamour, and original designs. So what does Firoza forecast next on the fashion radar?
F
or everyone from the modern fashionista to the more traditionally style-minded, a trip to Zebai’sh can be a case of double impact... With two leading boutiques to choose from – conveniently located North and South – going shopping’s twice the fun. Though the trendy salons share the same name, you’ll find that each has a different character and clothes content. The flagship store in London’s Green Lane continues to rock today’s glitziest and decorative dress looks. Meanwhile, the sister branch – housed in equally eyecatching premises in Preston, Lancashire - has gained a reputation and following, for specialising in contemporary collections. Just to add more spice to the mix, Firoza points out that though each store does indeed boast ‘a different signature’, so as never to be seen as predictable, she likes to add variety by regularly switching stock around. ‘It means that the customer can still find contemporary lines in London and visitors to Preston will still see more ornate pieces on the rails there,’ she explains. A wide and vibrant range of ever-changing designs has long been the Zeba’ish trademark. Firoza reveals that this will next be interpreted in ‘bold new silhouettes that play with proportion and often go to longer lengths.’ Layered looks of the lenghas with kameez ia a prime example of this upcoming trend. When planning what to show each season, Firoza says that it’s always important to strike the correct balance. ‘Some of our customers prefer the traditional, heritage look, others are into fashion fusion – and some are into both depending on the occasion,’ she considers. On the heritage side of style, fine and ornate fabrics may look heavy but new, clever cuts mean that the way they drape distributes any weight evenly. Though fashions may change and evolve, Firoza says that at Zeba’ish, key to the store’s success is that the accent is always on the customer. This extends into most outfits being able to be customised or mixed and matched. ‘Despite our widest range to date coming soon to both boutiques, our general client style policy stays the same - everything can be adapted to suit,’ says Firoza. ‘Ladies often come in with pictures of their ideal outfit – we can re-design the look to completely suit the client’s size and shape. Others ask to mix tops and bottoms, or for combinations of embroidery. We try to oblige individual design requirements wherever possible.’
FIROZA’S TREND FORECAST Zeba’ish styles coming soon…
Spring Casuals ‘Look out for a light range of versatile pieces such as soft and chic churidar suits - great for pre-wedding events and dinner parties to everyday wear. Featuring contemporary cuts, and available in many prints to pastels and the latest popping brights.’ Party Spectacular ‘Ornate anarkalies, skirts and jackets have a sophisticated edge next season. A lot of customers are requesting the new look fusion jacket with its dignified, tapered silhouette. Some separates will feature the latest patchwork detail. Gowns or ‘function frocks’ make the biggest statement. Some are a picture of Bollywood glamour - such as the hot pink net and boned gold design shown here. There’s definitely a Spanish flamenco feel coming through, using ruched and layered tulle for texture and skirt volume.’ Contemporary Wedding Wear ‘The buzz-word for this collection is very vintage! Here, you’ll find English styles from the slinky pencil-cut to full-blown romantic Cinderella ball-gown. Made in assorted lace to organza, they feature quality workmanship in their embellishment. Decorative bridal-wear trends include beautiful antique embroidery in gold or threadwork, to crystal work, beads and sequins worked in unusual motifs.’
“
From contemporary to traditional bridal-wear, casual separates to fabulous party dresses, there will be more selection at both boutiques than ever before.
”
Traditional Wedding Wear ‘The silhouette and effect is pure Rajasthani and classically regal in look. Attention now is on embellished cholis – (though longer bodices are still available for those who prefer more cover or elongation to flatter the figure). These are worn with semi-fitted, structured skirts with an up to date flattering flare. Fabrics in this traditional section are plush and opulent. Everything from lots of textured velvets to brocades, decorated with bold brooches and crystal work like you’ve never seen before!’ Dazzle in the Detail ‘A paint-box bright colour palette is popular as is ‘painting with fabric’ – a phrase which describes several tonal effects in an outfit. There’s always an emphasis on embellishment, and Zeba’ish is known for chunky work including brooches and swirls. Added to this, we’ll have unique 3D embroidery, and crystal ‘hangings’ with original placement and patterns. From patchwork to wirework, dhabka to badla, antique, or applique, we’ll be taking adornment across the board from bold to subtle and soft next season.’ Surprise, surprise! ‘In-store across both boutiques, as well as behind the scenes, Zeb’aish are planning lots of customer-pleasing projects,’ says Firoza with a teasing smile. ‘Lots of exciting ventures will be happening over the coming months…watch this space!’

“
From fashion to bridal-wear, it’s all about experimenting with lengths next season.

ccording to Chand, the most notable style change of late is the concept of longer lengths across skirts to shararas, kameez to gowns. ‘One such outfit example is a 36” hip-length or more kameez worn with very fine lycra pyjamas,’ comments Chand. The longer top length is also coming through on the bridal side, as an alternative to the evergreen corset bodice – though this is still in evidence and often preferable for petite girls, or those with more traditional tastes. ‘Another strong style statement this season is the sherwani look adapted into women’s wedding wear with feminine cuts and finer fabrics,’ says Chand. The top colour choice remains classic, ravishing reds ruby and scarlet. As embellishment, ‘dhabka and zardosi are making a comeback, while stonework and swarovski touches and embroidery are top of the decorative picks.’ Chand adds that resham or thread work is always eye-catching with its typical placement as motif. For walima wear, the preferred colour palette lightens into iced pink and powder blue and a flattering Khushboo’s combination of aqua combined with gold. The signature range of dreamy creams and golds are much in demand and always available. ‘I tend to showcase my store samples in these elegant neutrals as they suit every skin tone,’ Chand explains. Dignified silhouettes and a heritage feel are popular amongst the brides of Birmingham, the most glamorous of which feature many panelled lenghas for maximum movement and special effect. Constructed with contoured cuts and structured skirts, they come in a treasure-trove of ornate fabrics from deluxe jamavars or brocades worn with tops of softest velvets and shimmering laces. To further enhance the traditional feel, Chand says to check out the latest ‘oxidised’ embroidery with its authentic antique look. As for his ‘flavour of next season’ featured outfit, Chand suggests his ‘flamenco take on the fishtail’ lengha, pictured right. ‘I first launched this design on the catwalk eighteen months ago,’ he states. ‘Khushboo’s latest design twist is a bias cut to the tiered skirt.’
Love the look...
Right: ‘Ideal for the walima celebration, is this chic mix of light aqua and delicate gold embroidery. It features the latest longer length top and my three tiered variation of the fishtail skirt. This new, graduated bell shape gives a lovely grace and poise as you move.’ Below: ‘For a traditional take - an elegant mix of mint and emerald in deluxe jamavar, with velvet applique, swarovski and ‘ab’ rainbow stones.’

nown for her diverse and fashion-forward approach, make-up artist Zaiba has always been a keen follower of trends from East to West. Training at the Jemma Kidd Make-Up School and then with global brand MAC, led to the lawyer turned beauty therapist establishing her own Bradford-based beauty academy. As well as funky fashion catwalk and photo-shoot assignments, Zaiba finds she’s also in demand from a wide range of brides. Refreshingly open in her approach, Zaiba thinks that many cross-cultural looks are beautiful, though she has a huge soft spot for the ‘classical Pakistani bridal image’. After seeing her starring on many a Pakistani catwalk, Zaiba was delighted to have the pleasure of working with the stunning Pakistani supermodel Nooray Bhatti, for a special Viya photoshoot. ‘She looks great on camera,’ Zaiba enthuses. ‘I hope the following images inspire readers as much as I was inspired by making up Nooray.’

ights, camera, elegance! ‘Nooray’s type of beauty is very poised, very timeless,’ says Zaiba. ‘I’ve tried to achieve similarly classical looks here. I think that Pakistani fashion has had a huge influence on UK Asian style – from ornate, traditional outfits to roots oriented looks. Interpreted through Nooray, it looks truly aspirational.’

Complexion Perfection: MAC’s Studio Fix foundation in NC35, a medium shade; Pinch Me pink blusher powder topped with Soft & Gentle highlighter to contour. Brows groomed with Benefit’s kit. Lips to Love: MAC’s Amorous, a crimson shade, applied without lip liner, gives a naturally full effect. Bobbi Brown’s Gold Shimmer lip gloss on the centre of lips adds sparkle. Style Note: ‘With the hair in a high bun, worn with gold and purple, the effect is rich and dignified.’

’ve had a wonderful time working with Nooray,’ Zaiba concludes at the end of the shoot. ‘Just watching her is a lesson in style – she’s so photogenic. She really knows how to work the camera and even makes a dupatta look dramatic! From demure to Mughal style, she captured the different feel of each makeup design. I’m sure she’ll inspire Pakistani fashion and beauty for a long time to come.’
Mughal Beauty (this page)
Complexion Perfection: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer as before; for a heavier, camera-ready finish, Zaiba used MAC’s Studio Fix Foundation and Powder, both in NC35. She applied Bobbi Brown bronze blush powder to sculpt the cheeks, with Shimmer Brick to illuminate. Eyes as Highlight: Urban Decay primer as before, plus MAC’s Vanilla pigment highlighter. As the base, Forest Green was applied, with Amber Light, a gold/ bronze accent in the crease. Black Track gel eyeliner outlined and elongated the whole eye, and brows were groomed to complement. Lips to Love: With a lip brush, Zaiba painted MAC’s Chatterbox, a rich raspberry, onto lips for a full, natural shape, adding Bobbi Brown’s gold shimmer to the centre. Style Note: ‘The make-up really ties into the jewellery and hair design here. The delicate mattha pati, earrings and necklace frame boldly drawn features. The hair is arranged in a huge bun with side pleat. It adds up to a beautiful Pakistani look ideal for a classic ceremony.’

NOORAY TYPE TIPS TO GLAMOUR •For a sense of poise and grace, develop good posture and movement – ‘it’s an asset in pictures, as Nooray demonstrates so well,’ says Zaiba. •‘Nooray can wear anything and it looks great - though she especially suits styling that’s close to her Pakistani roots. Follow her example and experiment with makeup to express the most authentic you.’ •‘Updos are really model-elegant any time – wear hair up regularly for the ultimate, well-groomed effect…why save for special occasions?’ •‘Dramatised eyes can be the most beautiful facial feature – practice lining and smoking techniques for cover-girl glamour!’

You want to become an MUA – but how to choose your trainer? Here, MUA course graduate Maria Mahmood relates her experience…

ith no prior experience in the beauty field, I knew I wanted to become a make-up artist but kept putting it off. Last year, I saw Zaiba’s work on Facebook and was really impressed. Compared to all the others I’d researched, her fresh and versatile style appealed to me. It was both traditional and contemporary. I felt I had to put my dreams into action and finally enrolled on the special seven-day course. It taught me several key things: understanding individual features – what suits one person won’t suit all; working with different skin tones; complementary colour theory – how different shades gel together; the structure of eye make-up application, from contouring to blending; how to complete a look while working under pressure, and last but not least, how training in make-up can help in interacting with people from all walks of life. Consequently, it made me more confident and adaptable as a person. It’s all very well learning the theory of make-up but what about the practice? For me, the best bit of Zaiba’s training was the work shadowing. Not long after completing the course I found myself backstage at a big Asian wedding show helping to make-up the models. Now I’m a senior make-up artist on the team, and no two days are the same. I’m really happy with my career change.
MARIA’S MAKE-UP MEMO
Here’s how to achieve my beautiful – and original – bridal look, opposite… NEW LOOKS FOR OLD
‘It may be traditional, but the bride’s make-up palette need not always be a mix of gold, bronze and red. Led by the model’s brilliant, blue-toned gown, I decided to experiment with blue as a theme instead.’ STEAL THE MAKE-UP STYLE
‘Using the bride’s eyes as a focal point, I made them intensely smoky, balanced with subtle corals for the cheeks and lips. First, I applied a black base, smudged with a charcoal blue on the lids. Black liquid liner I winged out above lashes, while shadow was smoked under the eye to soften. White frost highlighter I used to accent the brows, groomed with Benefit’s brow kit – much softer than pencil. If make-up were an equation, I’d say a flawless base + accent on the eyes = great results! My all-time favourite foundation is Mac’s Studio Fix for even coverage. My favourite multi-purpose product is highlighter. Choose just the right gold shimmer for your skin tone to catch the light. It’s a good tip for the photo-ready bride to remember!’ MAKING YOUR MARK AS AN MUA
‘My advice is: find your ideal teacher and take their techniques as an inspiration. Next, develop your own twist. Mine’s a combination of dramatic imagery with an understanding of today’s bridal requirements. What will yours be?’

NAFISA Hair and Make-up by Nafisa Sultan
S U LTA N VIYA interviews Nafisa Sultan as the rising new star in beauty...
I
t isn’t simply a new image her clients receive but sometimes a much-needed boost to their confidence as well. Known in her native Leeds for her caring approach to make-up, Nafisa says sometimes her client makeovers ‘are on the inside as well as out!’ Typically, some may have had bad experiences elsewhere, have allergies and issues to cosmetic colours they avoid, or looks they aspire to. Following repeated client requests, Nafisa’s now branching out to provide one to one lessons and training. ‘I like to share my knowledge,’ she says. ‘As a make-up artist, I like to be a people’s person.’
★Face Focus
‘Nars Pro Primer and Urban Decay eye primer, followed by Nars Sheer Glow foundation in Ceylan and pressed powder in Nars’ Barcelona. Stila’s Convertible lip and cheek stain in Peony as blush, with Jemma Kidd’s shimmer disc on top. My Skin Tip: ‘Apply foundation sparingly and build up in layers, letting the first layer sink in. The even, dewy result is well worth your patience!’
★Feline Features
‘Colour lids in Urban Decay’s Chestnut Underground, with Clinique’s palette Deco Dance to shade and highlight under brow. Accentuate eyes by flicking Nars Stylo Liquid Liner above a combination of MAC’s False Lashes Extreme Black mascara and Eyelure Eveningwear lashes. Benefit’s Brow Zing in medium brings out the brows. Outline lips in MAC’S Dirty Rose, topped with sugar pink lipstick in Snob and clear gloss.’
★Ring the Changes
‘Although MAC’s obviously a popular brand, I like to mix and match with different ranges. As a make-up artist I like to keep my finger on the pulse and show my clients all the latest innovations I discover! One such favourite is the cosmetics company Stila, available in most Boots stores and online. Reasonably priced and long-wearing, the colours are great for photos and special occasions.’

‘Primers, foundation and powder, as before. Powder blush by MAC in pretty Fleur Power was used under Stila’s all-over shimmer, a peach and pearl toned duo in Kitten. My Product Tip: ‘I advise clients to look for multi-use products where possible as they’re cost-effective and versatile. For example, Stila’s shimmer’s great as body glow or brow highlighter; eye palettes give more choice than single shades.’
★Feline Features
‘Golden Rose’s Wet & Dry range of eye shadow quartets is a great, on-trend investment. Here, peacock green was brushed over the lids and highlighted, adding Nars’ matte shadow in Lulu as contour. Lips still tone with eyes but go all colour popping in MAC’s Moxie, a bright magenta. Outlined with More to Love MAC pro longwear pencil and clear gloss gives definition and polish.’
★Looks Party Perfect
‘This image is vivid and versatile, just as great worn for an engagement or evening wedding look - or to a friend’s party. It’s youthful and colourful, so I’d advise trying different shades of emerald and cobalt blue to get the best match for your eye colour. Finish the image with a vintage updo with trendy ‘quiff’ fringe feature to enhance the eyes even more!’
“Sometimes it’s good to try colour combinations you’re afraid of…strong blues and greens with hot pink is a usual example!”

Nafisa used a foundation in a warmer shade ‘to bring vitality to the skin’. Nars Sheer Glow in Punjab was chosen, with primers and powder in Barcelona, as before. Blusher by Stila, a convertible lip and cheek stain in Rose, gave depth to Mac’s Soft & Gentle Shimmer. ‘This sets the base for a highly traditional look with a twist on the classic magenta colour theme.’
★Feline Features
Create amethyst eyes with Nars’ Shimmer shadow in Party Monster, mid-tone and highlighter from the limited edition Nars trio in lilac, pearl and purple. Subtle liner defines dramatic lashes with mascara in MAC’s False Lash Extreme Black. My Lashes Tip: ‘Blend real lashes into false lashes so that they’re not obviously separate.’ Lips lined by Nars in Miss Sadie; sheer MAC lipstick in Venice.
★Bridal Style
‘I’m noticing that my brides are not opting a lot for typical gold – more for wedding jewellery with vivid stonework. Here, I’ve devised a regal look with the eye palette complementing the jewels. A tip of mine is to look for the ‘lesser’ colour in a dress or embroidery and accentuate in the make-up. Onlookers are then likely to notice all the finer detail in your outfit!’

Preeti’s PLAN First with the news, Viya’s pleased to announce a bright, time-saving idea for the bride-to-be… Preeti’s new ‘A to Wed’ website
“ 62
The result is an on-line wedding planner that can coordinate from start to finish, is completely free to use for anyone, and aims to take the headache out of managing every aspect of the big day. The site, named A to Wed, ‘gets rid of the hassle of paperwork and having to endlessly juggle and arrange things with every supplier,’ says Preeti. ‘From floor plans to budgets, to updating itineraries to guest lists, we’ve got it all in one place.’ Though other companies have launched directory style sites, Preeti feels sure that her state of the art, fully integrative site is the first of its kind in the Asian catering industry. ‘Because of our experience in planning weddings, we felt this tool was needed and long overdue,’ she explains. ‘Asian weddings are more complex than most, with up to five events needing planning per wedding. This website is something that we know engaged couples will find really helpful. You could say we’re catering to everyone’s needs!’ she smiles. ‘On-line management of your wedding occasion is the way forward; it’s the future.’
Cut the fuss – plan your wedding on-line. Our site’s designed to be the bride’s ultimate countdown tool.
“
Y
ou may already have heard of Preeti, the woman who fronts the well-established catering and events company of the same name. With its traditional values - plus quality event-producing and catering - over the past 15 years, the brand has become a market-leader. Alongside maintaining its reputation as purveyor of fine food from traditional to contemporary, Preeti has been working hard in the background developing new, trend-setting ideas.

YOUR WEDDING WAY FORWARD – WITH A TO WED:
Countdown to the big day the chill-out-way with Preeti’s indispensable new site. Here, she gives you an introduction and guides you through the process…
MY WEDDING
‘I wanted everyone to be completely at ease when planning their special day. I needed the whole idea to be accessible and easy to use. In short, log on and sign in and instantly you have the advantage of having your own bespoke wedding site. We’ve designed and developed the site to save time for the bride and groom; it acts as your on-line personal wedding planner. No paperwork, no fuss, lots less stress; just follow our template and relax. ‘The website is customised to each individual user. After signing up, the user completes a short survey and responds to questions about the type of wedding they are having and the religions of the bride and groom. The website will then automatically change the to-do list, as well as budget items and itinerary according to the users’ details.’
TO DO LIST
‘The big plus point of this handy feature is that it’s fully editable. You can set self-reminders to make everything less daunting. Easily customised, add personal items as you wish, as things happen. With this, you can actually feel on top of things…as impossible as that sounds when initially planning a wedding!’
MY BUDGET
‘State your budget and plan how you want to spend it, update as and when you make payments. As it also allows for pending payments, you can see the amount of money already spent and what remains of the budget. It helps keep you on track of what’s been spent and hopefully, helps you stick to budget!’
MY SEATING PLAN
‘It’s a very useful and great time saving device that helps you visualise your floor plan and where guests are seated. In addition, clients who have booked Preeti’s services can enjoy further access to pre-loaded floor plans to the actual venue they have booked. Another perk for anyone enjoying access to the site is that you can create your own floor plan to match your chosen venue.’
MY GUESTS
‘Store guest addresses and contact details; monitor respondents to your invite. Enjoy the bonus of having the facility to create a different guest list for each event and ceremony. I find that by separating each event out, it instantly gives a better sense of perspective.’ 64

MY WEBSITE
‘I love this feature: your very own website that will build up to be a showcase of the big countdown. It’s been designed so you can tell all your family and friends how you met, the first date, meeting the parents, the proposal, etc. Easily updated, it can be sent as a link to guests and can be loaded with pictures showing your whole wedding journey.’
ITINERARY
“
‘This essential scheduling tool can be changed and updated as frequently as needed. Our template can be conveniently printed off and given to suppliers. It also offers suggested itineraries, which can be adapted to suit different events.’
The bespoke approach allows you to manage every aspect and monitor your wedding’s progress. Feel good about getting it done smoothly!
WEDDING DAY COUNT DOWN
‘Time is ticking…but with our real-time count down you can watch the days away… without panicking!’
SUPPLIERS
‘As well as noting your own favourites, you can see our preferred suppliers, all of whom we recommend and work with regularly. I think it helps to have all chosen supplier’s details in one place, and see how things are progressing at a glance – from bookings to pay plans.’

Beauty
ravel and glamour are the twin inspirations behind Saima Akram’s beauty business. An early fascination with Bollywood’s Sri Devi and Kylie Minogue introduced her to the idea of different images and styles, East to West. After training as a beauty therapist, Saima first put theory into practice as the make-up girl for presenters on a live TV news show in London. ‘Good training for camera-ready make-up for brides, too,’ she remarks. Preferring a relaxed Pakistani lifestyle for a while, she established a luxury beauty salon in Lahore. ‘Brides here wanted a heavier look, replicating Bollywood with strong base and eye looks.’ By 2006, Saima returned to London to build up a private client base. Favourite star moments so far include discreet grooming for Shan of ‘Lollywood’ for an awards ceremony. Not forgetting her most recent moment making up cover girl Laila Rouass in typical glam fashion. ‘It’s good to express someone’s culture,’ she says. ‘For Laila’s Arabic look, that’s big, tonged hair, smoky eyes, sculpted cheeks, subtle lips.’ Saima recommends this season’s big hair as a great look for showing off stunning headwear and jewellery sets. Achieve with heated rollers, tongs or wands for your choice of curl size. Complexion-wise, a dewy, radiant base creates a great canvas to focus on the eyes as main feature. For the latest smoky peepers, shade lids and line round the eyes extending out, to echo shaped and pencilled brows.

Skincare is essential to address before the art of making up… Preparation is vital as the skin is your crucial canvas. The skincare product I highly recommend to brides is Origins Microdermabrasion. Using this once or twice weekly removes dead cells for a glowing, brighter finish. Also Estee Lauder’s Night Repair is great at regenerating skin while you sleep. As a simple, three step make-up prep, Bobbi Brown’s serum helps smooth out and soften skin, following through with the Vitamin Face Base and Eye Cream.
Every bride should have a clever capsule make-up kit… My must-haves are hard-working, long-lasting quality products that work double duty. I swear by Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Nectar, whatever your skin tone. As a bronzer it gives a great glow all year round and works as an eye shadow, too. For eyes, I have yet to find a better effect mascara than YSL’s False Lash or a liner to beat Bobbi Brown’s Black Ink Gel liner. Mac’s two coloured Brow Shaper in brown with highlighter is a useful tool. For lips, I suggest Mac’s nude lip-liner in Spice and Bobbi Brown’s lip balm and Pot Rouge in coral.
How to achieve the strongest look of the season… This has to be the smoky, anytime eye, worn day or evening. The key to this strong trend is choosing your shadow colour with care. Dark colours that bring out the colour of your eyes and blend well are best. Look out for exciting new shades in egg-plant, plum and jet black or iridescent emerald. My current favourite’s Nars’ Dark Forest, with a unique glimmer.
Avoid making the worst make-up mistakes…
PICTURE PERFECT Saima puts the finishing touches to cover girl, Laila, right. To enhance the actress model’s natural Arabic look is the beauty theme.
Without a doubt, avoid anything unbalanced. Over made-up eyes and lips - worn together - are a no-no. There’s a simple beauty equation that goes: if heavy on the eyes, go neutral on the lips; or if you want that classic red-lipped look, complement with eyes shaded in brown and simple black liner. Take care also with this season’s trendy colour-pop shades like neons, hot pinks and oranges. They can easily look overpowering or the wrong shade can make you look tired. Especially for brides, it’s best to aim for classic looks to enhance the real you; weddings are not the time for experimenting! Also in general, factor in enough time to
apply make-up properly for that polished finish. Whatever the occasion, it equals good grooming.
How to get the best out of hair whatever the length or texture… Flat-iron straightening is so yesterday! Aside from formal up-dos, sexy, girlie curls are where it’s at. Any hair texture can be made more manageable with the right product priming and styling. For bounce, mousse works best; my favourites are Pantene, VO5 and L’Oreal. For volume on any hair length, use Velcro rollers on damp hair for an hour or more, brush loosely, spritz with hairspray. Barrel curls using curling tongs are another option. Crimping is also making a comeback for a fun, party look!
It’s the little extras that add up to a perfect finished image… With appropriate skin care, flattering cosmetic colours and hairstyle sorted, the essentials of any great image are set. Most brides these days are rightly camera-conscious and have as their mantra, ‘face first.’ However, smaller details in the bigger beauty picture are just as important. Hands and nails – not forgetting that special ring finger – are significant in pictures and the ceremony itself. Pamper hands regularly with overnight creams and consider natural nails painted in pearly pinks or lacquer reds as an alternative to last season’s too obvious looking extensions. Finally, fragrance is of course a personal choice for that scented bridal style statement. As lingering as a photo closeup, wear your favourite but be sure that it’s light, floral and joyful rather than musky and overpowering. A breath of fresh scent in spray form is preferable to perfume which can seem heavy and even induce headaches for you and your guests – especially in summer and in enclosed spaces!

hen Saima’s not around or in the country, Kokab exclusively works on Saima’s clients on her behalf – from organising fashion shows to making up brides. They met at a Wembley event a few years ago and despite having tried other make-up training courses, Kokab decided to train with Saima and has never looked back. ‘I liked Saima’s techniques, her extensive training and the fact that she helps get her students out there,’ she says. ‘Today’s clients require a mix of looks from soft to strong and from dewy English to Arabic, so I’m learning all the time just how diverse make-up artistry is; it’s an artistic expression of different cultures, moods and feelings,’ she considers. ‘With brides especially, the make-up artist has to be like a best friend. I hope I’m considered loyal, hardworking and a perfectionist. It’s all thanks to Saima for making my career dreams come true.’ •My bridal countdown tip:‘Living by good basics works wonders: that’s drinking lots of water; regular sleep; eating healthily; finding your best cleansing/ toning and facials routine well ahead of the big day.’ •My make-up tip:‘A great consultation acts as your guide to your ultimate image. Give yourself space to enjoy it as a one to one experience – too many others in the room giving different advice can be very distracting!’ •My trend tip:‘Bold, Arabic colours and what I call ‘smoky eyes with surprise’ – not just block black but black blended with purple, blues or reds. It’s a really flattering look.’

ZARA CATERING
‘YOUR DAY
your way’ NAZ
Director of Zara Catering
When it comes to putting on the style for that special occasion, whatever event presentation’s your preference, Naz is your diva of décor!
I
n the world of catering, part of the art of culinary success is in the presentation. Food has to look as mouth-watering as it tastes. Taking this a step further, Zara’s Catering have further extended their expertise and attention to detail into another important area of display – event décor. The motivator behind the décor side, says Naz, is to provide a totally bespoke service so that whatever look and style the client wants for her event, she gets. Though it’s true that many décor services exist – especially in the bridal market – not many can be said to be as innovative as Zara’s. The company actually designs, and makes, a great deal of furniture items abroad so that there is always a constant stock of new design lines for clients. ‘We often like to purchase items fresh for a function so that the client’s happy knowing her merchandise has not been used before,’ says Naz. With Naz keeping her pulse firmly on trends happening in places like the US, the result of her inspiration is that much of the product has a fresh and fashionable feel to it. ‘We do like to be different,’ she agrees. ‘It interests us as a brand to always be delivering something unique and distinctive.’ In addition, the personal touch is high
priority – or what Naz describes as the brand’s mantra to the client – ‘your day, you way’. This means being able not only to customise to the client’s budget ‘but also their input,’ emphasises Naz. ‘For example, just on the subject of draping… some clients want all their space draped, some want it half draped, some want different colours of drapes… we allow for every variation – which is a lot!’ As a perfectionist, Naz says she’s not happy until the client’s happy and a ‘wow factor’s in place.’ As much business comes about by word of mouth, keeping things sparkling new and exceptional is a challenge that must be met each time. A consultation creates a design brief, which Zara’s then modify so that no two clients events ever look quite the same. Whatever you care to call it - beyond the call of duty or dedication to décor - it appears to be Zara’s calling card. For an idea of some of this season’s popular looks, overleaf you’ll find a Zara’s taster or style edit, of their décor designs and variations. From mehndi party favourites to a medley of mandaps; tempting wedding walkways to reception interiors, let your décor dreams and themes begin here…

Mendhi DREAM THEME STYLES Zara’s popular Moroccan theme can be easily adapted into the following… Trad with a Twist Arabic to Asian, souk style to eastern influenced, furnishings and accessories can be used to achieve any cross-cultural effect. Ravishing Regal Why not get the royal factor with majestic décor? Pick a mix of opulent colour, lavish texture, embellishment, and ornate draping. Best of Bollywood Aim for a movie-style spectacle with a vivid colour spectrum – and glitz, glitter and razzmatazz in the detail!
72
T
o get the special mehndi party started, creating the right ambience – and injecting a distinctive theme to the occasion – is most likely top of anyone’s wish-list. Theme-wise, tasteful and timeless is always a good way to go and top of the mendhi party trends this season, is a rich and luxurious Moroccan theme, says Naz of Zara Catering. ‘Opting for a Moroccan style story can be a smart choice for party décor as it is so versatile colour-wise,’ Naz considers. ‘From zesty orange to peacock greens and blues, regal purples to hot pinks. In a customised mix or strong, stand-alone shade, it’s a theme that offers a lot of scope… and always looks great against bright mehndi party outfits!’
Once the colour scheme is in place, dramatic draping – which can be designed around any room space - comes next. Rich and textured velvets, chiffon canopies to organza veils can adorn and add texture, to add interest. Low seating, plush settees to scattered cushions in jewel hues, complement the comfortable and sophisticated vibe. Lighting is key to highlight a certain mood. From star-effect ceiling points to eastern table lamps; uplighters to formations of candles in glass cups or flickering to different heights; the scene is set to enchant. Finishing touches from shish pipes to authentic lanterns and ornaments all help evoke exotic surrounds for you to relax in and enjoy.

Mandaps DREAM THEME STYLES Stages are available in a wider choice than ever, such as… Classical Splendour Traditional circular settings can be customised to today’s tastes with decorative detail. Complement your bridal mandap to ceremonial outfits and themes. His and Hers Entwined Two semi-circles joined in the centre – separate yet together – are the latest take on mandap design. Romantic Gateway An arch design offers appropriate elegance and ambience. Its simple structure can be made bespoke to any bridal couple’s taste.
74
O
f all the decorative elements to your ceremony, the mandap, its staging and setting, is without doubt the most important. In today’s market, there is a great amount of choice – but that is not to say that all the choice is great! At Zara’s, the brand likes to pride themselves on providing the exclusive and exquisite in terms of taste and quality. An additional plus point is that their wellconsidered and crafted range of designs is accessible for those of all faiths. From four post favourite to classic stage and canopied mandap, an array of easily interchangeable shapes is offered. From the timeless and traditional to the on-trend, the majority of the mandaps aspire
to a majestic feel. ‘A growing number of clients from different religions are in search of settings with a regal look,’ explains Naz. It’s important to remember that your mandap needs to look good in photos – as visually it will be framing the wedding couple at a very special moment in time! With Zara’s striking designs you can’t really go wrong, as there’s something to suit every look and budget. Classical and circular to symbolise the couple’s union; arch and gateway style to sculptural; ornamental to fringed with crystal; such designs complement any ceremony. Seating trends are also accommodated: double thrones to chaise longues complete the sacred scene-setting.

VIYA introduces up-and-coming
talent to look out for...
AMARA
Glamour S he may be Scotland bred but self-taught make-up artist Amara’s already proving a hit working nationwide. Fresh from assisting backstage at the latest London Fashion Week, she’s also styled Asian fusion shoots for a glossy magazine and groomed actors for a romantic German film. As well as making her mark in media make-up, brides are also after Amara’s versatile touch. ‘There’s a lot of diverse requests these days,’ she says. ‘From set traditional to softer contemporary styles and latest trends seen in magazines.’ And Amara’s trademark? ‘Bespoke beauty. I like to customise colour and style completely to suit the client.’
Love the Look...
Great Foundations: ‘For that photo-finish base, I like Kryolan’s cream palette and I often apply two types of powder on top,’ explains Amara. ‘First, I used MAC’s Prep and Prime translucent powder to blot, misting skin over with hydration spray, then used Christian Dior powder to ‘set’. Equally, Amara uses up to three blush products. Here she used MAC’s Mahogany to first contour, before dusting cheeks with Dolly and MAC’s shimmer to highlight. The Art of Mix and Match Make-up: ‘Eyes and lips are in balance here,’ says Amara. With MAC’s Vanilla as base pigment, eyes are first highlighted in Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in Beech. A MAC silver-lilac lifts lids, with Pink Opal pigment on top and a deeper pink used to accent outer corners, while Black Noir smokes outer corners, and gel liner in Blacktrack outlines eyes. Amara says she’s a fan of Kim Kardashian’s make-up – and Kim’s friend Lauren Ridinger has brought out a make-up brand, Motive, available online. Amara used Motive’s new mascara in black with Eyelure lashes. A mix of pinks – MAC’s Viva Glam, Snob and Please Me – applied to lips achieves a unique glossy sugar pink shade. Bespoke Beauty Theme: ‘A glamorous party look that’s more informal and less ‘set’. A modern touch is that the make-up tones with, rather than completely matches, the crimson embellished outfit.’

Love the Look...
Great Foundations: ‘The base is the same as the previous image. ‘I really like to make great play of cheekbones,’ says Amara, ‘so I contour, dust the ‘apples’ of the cheeks and highlight. After first contouring with MAC’s Mahogany, I then used the brand’s powder blush ‘’Shy’ followed by strobe cream to further illuminate bone structure.’ The Art of Mix and Match Make-up: ‘Eyelids are brushed all over with a rustic copper orange by Bobbi Brown, shaded in the corners with MAC’s Mahogany Copper, tipping out with Black Noir. Gold pigment patted over lids lends extra sparkle. Highlighter is the same as before, with Blacktrack liner defining all-round the eye for a kohl effect. ‘When shading brows, I often prefer powder such as MAC’s brown brow powder rather than a sharp pencil which can be too harsh,’ considers Amara. Mascara by Motive, lashes by Eyelure, as before. Lips are outlined and shaded with a lip-brush filled with MAC’s Morange then blended with Kraft for a coral finish. Bespoke Beauty Theme: ‘This is very vibrant, more fashion-led and trend-setting than strictly bridal. The hair features controlled volume but is neither too slick nor rigid and sculpted. There’s an overall natural quality. Make-up wise, it’s all about a lighter touch and the feel is warm and seasonal; bespoke beauty designed to complement the stunning embroidery shown here.’

“Don’t be afraid to aim for an understated finish to a traditional reception look. It can enhance your natural beauty.” Amara
Love the look... Great Foundations: ‘A pale version of Kryolan’s foundation was used to match the skin-tone. ‘Using a base even a shade lighter can look washed out,’ says Amara. ‘Base colours should be mixed and matched until the perfect tone is found to exactly match skin-tone.’ Pressed powder – MAC’s in medium light – plus contour blush in Mahogany and Harmony with MAC’s gold shimmer strobe cream, completes the complexion. The Art of Mix and Match Make-up: ‘MAC’s highlighter and shimmer brick as before, with Noir Blue by MAC colourwashed over the lids. ‘For piercing eyes, I lined inside the eyes with a white pencil and stroked the blue shadow under and out for a feline shape,’ says Amara. ‘When using such strong colour, keep liquid liner subtle to offset the dramatic blue.’ Mascara in Oxy Blue and brown brow palette, both by Motive. After defining lips with liner, a blend of MAC’s Sweetie, Shy Girl and Crème Cup combines to create a pale rose peach finish. Bespoke Beauty Theme: ‘Great for the latest smoky reception look,’ says Amara. ‘The focal point of bold, striking eyes is enhanced still further by the European or Audrey Hepburn style of subtle up-do. I’ve kept it all understated and traditional, though this is a versatile image that can easily be ‘layered’ into a more typical traditional feel, with a heavier dupatta.’

“When using an ornate hairpiece such as this, the accent’s as much on the eyes as it is on the stonework.” Amara
Love the look...
Great Foundations: ‘Foundation and pressed powder as before. Cheekbones are sculpted and shaded with Amara’s three-part blush trademark. Contour colouring in MAC’s Harmony, pressed powder pink blush in Lust by Motive, over the fullest part, and MAC’s strobe cream to illuminate. The Art of Mix and Match Make-up: ‘Highly coloured with attention to depth of application’. Pure silver pigment provides a metallic base to lids. A pink rose shade in the inner corner contrasts with a bright blue at the outer corner. ‘Try ‘wiping’ across an outer flash of colour,’ says Amara. ‘The smudging helps give a cream effect.’ A thin trace of black liner without the flick – from lash to lash – ‘lets the colour do the talking’. Black mascara by Motive, Eyelure lashes and brows extra-defined with Motive’s brow palette helps to emphasise eyes. Lips are subtle in a mix of MAC’s Sweetie and Motive with golden gloss on top for iridescent sheen. Bespoke Beauty Theme: ‘Vibrant and colourful, it’s an exuberant Arabic look that’s bang up to date,’ says Amara. ‘Pink and blue can be difficult colours to work with, especially together…they can look really good or really bad. The trick is to know when to stop. Build colour up gradually and keep in moderation.’ Amara adds that to secure a heavy hairpiece, backcomb hair at the back for added support.

ith managing two busy beauty salons in London’s popular Green Lane to her credit, Komal is well placed to dispense style advice to her varied clientele. She feels that today’s customers are almost equally split – into those who prefer a traditional look, and those into more of a contemporary image. On the trend side, Komal is noticing that ‘Bollywood heroine looks and smoky ‘peacock’ eyes using blends of blues, greens, black and kohl’ are big news. Also, for the ultimate customised look, brides are keen to try a cross-section of the best cosmetic brands and products in order to find their perfect colours and textures. Top performing ranges she recommends are MAC, Chanel and Bobbi Brown. As an experienced beautician, Komal can also offer tried and tested tips across laser treatments, facials, manicures to makeovers. In order to provide a complete top to toe service, she has extended her skills into hair-dressing. ‘You can’t stand still,’ she says. ‘It’s good to keep learning, to keep on top of proven techniques and new trends. My Beauty Brief to Brides…
I always advise brides to think in advance of the big day. That can mean anything from laser treatment – allow eight weeks in advance for skin to settle – to calming and pampering facials. It’s essential to prepare the skin so that the wedding make-up looks the best it can be. Properly prepped skin has a polish and a lovely dewy radiance in photos. ‘I consider eyes to be the focal point of any image. It’s good to check out lots of different brands and play with colour combinations to see what best complements the wedding jewellery. Some of the best shades I’ve seen this season
88
include French brands like Sephora and Chanel while Bobbi Brown and MAC always have great pigments across the rainbow. There are many ways to achieve trendy smoked effects or fashionable feline eyes. Careful contouring and lining plus colour mixing - along with using just the right depth of shadow - takes practice. Part of the art of application is in knowing when to stop! Remember, eyes are like jewels, so if they’re naturally very striking, they may look better less made-up. Whatever your make-up style, take the time to trial different looks – and have fun!

•Know your most radiant bridal beauty look - traditional or contemporary. Avoid peer pressure from friends and family; choose the look and feel that truly suits your features, personality and wedding vibe. For example, a heavy, caked-on traditional look can overwhelm delicate features, while a minimal contemporary make-up may not flatter an ornate wedding outfit. •Keep your finger on the style pulse. It’s interesting how much Asian bridal taste and fashion’s changed in a decade. Magazines and movies are fab for what’s hot and what’s not – but true style is timeless! •Beauty campaigns can inspire your new make-up look. Having worked for Lancome in London’s Selfridges and for brands like YSL and Dior at
London City airport, I find each brand’s different approach useful as inspiration for occasion wear to everyday elegance. •Trust the right make-up artist. As such, I have done my research and know the best products that will provide the best make-up possible. Also, how to properly contour your face and highlight your features to enable you to look stunning in photos. Trained to assess a client, I can instantly understand which colours complement eye and hair colour to skin tone, to products that flatter your unique skin type. •Pinks can flatter lips more than reds. I’m a big fan of pink lipstick as it looks so feminine. It’s a good failsafe to use when red looks too strong. The new frosted pinks are delicious against sparkling jewellery from diamante to crystal. VIYA SPECIAL

Maybellline’s gel liner and Great Lash mascara gives the final flourish. Lips: Lip-brush applied Lancome gloss lipstick, in this season’s latest berry shade.

•Look after your skin. Good skincare is the foundation of beauty and at the heart of looking our best. It’s important to create – and update – your skincare regime. Cleansing, toning and moisturising customised to your skin type – and age – is a must. Skin condition needs to be taken into account months before your wedding. That way it’s a tip-top canvas to show off your gorgeous made-up features to best advantage! •Choosing the correct foundation. I found the most common misconception is that the colour should match your face, when in fact the perfect foundation will blend in with your neck. Use a make-up sponge when applying, to enable foundation to be applied to the skin evenly. Your face and neck should not have a line where the foundation
ends, so just remember to blend, blend, blend. •Be aware of what you put on your skin. For the purest ingredients, use established brands or consider organic. As well as MAC and Clarins, a new favourite of mine is the Swiss company Arbonne, available online. •Too much application can spoil the perfect lipstick. To avoid looking harsh and over-done, dark, rich colours are often best applied directly with a lip-brush, as shown on my model here. Paler colours perhaps need a lip-pencil first to give more definition. •Cultivate a polished finish to your look. This is especially important for the bride. For a matte look, choose a powder base; for a moist look, mist sprays are a must-have.

Base: Aim for a photo-finish coverage with Supercover base and translucent powder; Illamasqua blusher in peach gives great cheekbone definition. Eyes: For a gleam to the eye, L’Oreal in gold chrome sets the look; a forest green shade by Arbonne adds emphasis. Use YSL’s Touche Eclat to highlight/brighten the complexion and eyes. Lashings of Maybelline liner and kohl, plus false lashes, complete the bold effect. Lips: To balance dramatic eyes, keep lipstick neutral. Nushma chose the latest glossy peach tone by Arbonne.

•Make-up should complement and enhance your natural look. I’m a great believer in expressing your own individuality through make-up. I believe that all women are beautiful and finding your signature look is about accentuating the positive. •Simplicity and blending are key factors to looking fabulous. A dramatic make-up as in the look I created here is about balance and attention to application. Take a focal point such as strong eyes and make them stand out taking time to shade and smoulder. Keep lips subtle for maximum impact. Enliven your face with a healthy glow to cheeks. My current favourites are the peaches – Arbonne’s Apricot – and pinks – Benefit’s Bella Bamba blushers with a slight shimmer. Less is more – tap off
excess and smile and sweep over the apples of your cheeks to achieve that fresh-faced look. •Your make-up artist should be your style best friend. I believe it’s vital to spend time on achieving a stunning look that suits you for your special day. Choose a make-up artist with a caring approach and all-round understanding of nutrition, skin preparation and make-up application. I believe a good diet with antioxidants and fish oils is beneficial to the skin – it also allows make-up to ‘sit’ well for that flawless look.’ •True or False? Add-on lashes can make or break your make-up. If in doubt, try an either/or approach: false lash mascara or false lashes worn without mascara as in this bride. Little details can change a look!
