Celebrating the 35th Annual Vancouver Jewish Film Festival
This year has presented profound challenges for us all, and our commitment to supporting the Jewish community and Israel has never been stronger.
In these trying times, Jewish and Israeli Arts and Culture serve as vital expressions of our community’s resilience and unity. The diverse array of films showcased at the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival reflects the richness of our cultural heritage and collective identity.
Your annual participation in the Festival is not only impactful but also essential in promoting Jewish and Israeli cinema to a wider audience. As the first and longest-serving Canadian presenter of Jewish films, the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival continues to uphold its legacy of excellence.
It’s important to emphasize that the Festival is not exclusive to Jews; we warmly welcome and host individuals from all backgrounds. Our efforts are dedicated to fostering connections and building alliances with our non-Jewish friends, recognizing that solidarity and collaboration are key to strengthening our community. Indeed, it truly takes a village to sustain and enrich our cultural tapestry.

Born Jerome Silberman into an assimilated Jewish family in Milwaukee, he was affectionately known as Jerry among his childhood friends. However, it was under the name Gene Wilder that he would captivate audiences worldwide, establishing himself as a beloved comic genius through an unparalleled series of film roles. From his portrayal of the timid Leo Bloom in Mel Brooks’ The Producers to the whimsical and enigmatic Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wilder’s performances only seemed to deepen in significance, humour, and humanity over time. His on-screen chemistry with Richard Pryor in films like Silver Streak and his comedic masterpieces such as Blazing Saddles, The Frisco Kid, and Young Frankenstein further solidified his status as a comedic icon.
In Ron Frank’s heartfelt biographical documentary, Wilder’s multifaceted talents as an actor, writer, director, and mensch are celebrated, with Wilder himself contributing narration through recordings from his memoir. Remembering Gene Wilder is a delightful homage, offering generous glimpses into Wilder’s illustrious career through film clips and heartfelt recollections from the likes of Mel Brooks, Carol Kane, Alan Alda, and Karen Wilder. Prepare to embark on a binge-watch of Wilder’s entire oeuvre — this tender and enlightening tribute is sure to leave you eager to revisit his timeless performances again and again.

UNSUNG: The Joan Beckow Story
Sunday, April 7 at 1 pm • Fifth Avenue Cinemas
Guests: Directors, Carlos Coronado, Jessica Stuart, Ron Stuart
Who is Joan Beckow?
You might not know her name, but it makes complete sense to put Bernstein, Sondheim and Beckow together in the same sentence.
Not all remarkable creators get the spotlight they deserve during their lifetime, and ‘UNSUNG’ (supported by Canada Council for the Arts) tells the unheard story of prolific, brilliant, and TOTALLY under-celebrated female, Jewish, Canadian composer, Joan Beckow, who passed at age 88 in 2021.
Growing up in music in an era when female composer/instrumentalists weren’t really given a platform, Beckow’s undeniable ability to convey complex emotion in melody, and her mastery of harmony, has so far, fallen under the radar. Beckow’s work has been performed on-stage hundreds, even thousands of times, but never in her 50+ year career was her music professionally recorded in-studio.
A Joan Beckow Legacy Project production, this 30-minute documentary, along with selftitled double-disc companion album, will finally give a platform to the exceptional life and repertoire of this praise-worthy composer, giving these pieces a chance to live long beyond the life of their author.

In 1939 Warsaw, as the Nazis stormed into Poland, nurse Irena Gut faced displacement and coercion to serve the German war machine. Against the backdrop of adversity, she found herself managing the household of a Nazi commandant. However, instead of succumbing to the path of least resistance and relying solely on her status and ethnicity for safety, Gut embarked on a perilous journey to rescue a dozen Jewish refugees from the horrors of persecution and death.
As threats to democracy resurface prominently in Poland’s national narrative, it becomes imperative to shed a dramatic spotlight on this courageous tale. Irena’s Vow brings to life the true story of Irena Gut, honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel for her heroic deeds.
Directed by Canadian filmmaker Louise Archambault, and featuring Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse in the role of Irena, known for her portrayal in Yellow Jackets, this film promises to be a powerful testament to one woman’s unwavering determination in the face of unimaginable evil.

In this charming domestic tale from Hungarian filmmaker Adam Breier, mordant humour intertwines with genuine warmth as we follow the journey of a Jewish family toward reconciliation. Tamas, an aging but tender boxing coach in present-day Budapest, finds himself grappling with a strained relationship with his son, Ivan. Ivan, having converted to Orthodox Judaism, relocated to Israel, where he started a family of his own, including a son named Ariel whom Tamas has never met.

Breier’s film is a testament to masterful storytelling, characterized by superb performances and direction that deftly balances comedy with poignant moments of reflection.
As Tamas and Ivan navigate the complexities of their relationship, Breier’s film offers a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the enduring bonds that tie families together, capturing the intricacies of human connection with nuance and depth.

Apples and Oranges with short: The Boy
Tuesday, April 9 at 4 pm • Fifth Avenue Cinemas
Nominee: Panorama Director - DocAviv Film Festival, 2021
Winner: Best Cinematography. Tel Aviv International Students Film Festival (The Boy)
The 1960s generation was captivated by the communal ideology of the Israeli Kibbutz, which garnered widespread support for Israel and was viewed as a miraculous phenomenon by the Kibbutz Movement. Apples and Oranges is a masterful depiction of the joy and enthusiasm experienced by both Israelis and visitors within the Kibbutz community. The film also addresses the significant cultural clashes and challenges that arose from the interactions between the two diverse cultures.
In The Boy, Israeli filmmaker Yahav Winner offers a prophetic warning through his poignant short film. Set along the Israel-Gaza border, Winner’s final work captures the stark reality of life in the region. The film follows Barak, a young resident of Kfar Aza, whose daily life is overshadowed by the distant sounds of conflict emanating from Gaza. Despite his father Avinoam’s work in the fields, Barak grapples with the heartbreaking realization that individuals like him reside on the other side of the fence, amidst the turmoil.
The Boy is a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of the dissonance and complexity of existence along the border. Winner’s untimely passing on October 7th lends an added poignancy to his work, underscoring the urgency and relevance of his message

Based on the true story of Edgardo Mortara, this gripping narrative unfolds in 1858 when the Pope’s soldiers storm into the home of the Mortara family in the Jewish Quarter, tasked with seizing their seven-year-old son, Edgardo. The reason: Edgardo had been secretly baptized as an infant, and according to papal laws of the time, he must undergo a Catholic upbringing. Distraught, Edgardo’s parents are determined to do whatever it takes to reclaim their son.
Supported by public opinion and the international Jewish community, the Mortaras’ struggle quickly escalates into a political showdown. As they seek to regain custody of Edgardo, their plight poses a challenge to the increasingly wavering power of the 19th-century papacy. The clash between the papacy and the forces of democracy and unification paints a vivid portrait, offering a thought-provoking narrative with resonant implications for 21st-century audiences.

In Alexandria, Egypt, the synagogue of the once largest Jewish community in the world is about to be shut down. To prevent this, Ben, an ultra-Orthodox Jew from Brooklyn visiting Jerusalem, is dispatched to Egypt as the crucial tenth man needed for the Pesach ceremonies. However, a series of misfortunes leaves Ben stranded in the Sinai Desert after missing his plane and being ejected from a bus. His last hope lies with Adel, a grouchy Bedouin in search of his lost camel.
As Adel’s car breaks down, their predicament becomes a fight for survival in the unforgiving desert. Despite being rescued by the monks of St. Catherine, Ben’s health deteriorates rapidly. The fate of the Alexandria community hangs in the balance. Can they be saved?
This delightful comedy takes off with moments of profound empathy and cross-cultural understanding as Ben and Adel navigate their unexpected journey together, offering a heart-warming exploration of human connection and resilience in the face of adversity.

The film delves into the gripping second trial of Pierre Goldman, a far-left activist who had been convicted of multiple armed robberies resulting in the deaths of two pharmacists. In 1975, Goldman found himself back in court in France, vehemently declaring his innocence. Twenty years before the O.J. Simpson case, the Goldman trial mirrored the political, ideological, and racial tensions that permeated 1970s France and Europe. Regarded as the trial of the century, it deeply polarized the nation, exacerbating the divide between the conservative right and the intellectual left.
Director Cedric Kahn immerses viewers in the complexities of the judicial process, placing us in the shoes of the jurors and illuminating the inherent limitations of the justice system.
