Winston Cluster
T
hroughout his career, Harry Winston believed that diamonds should dictate designs - that their natural brilliance should take the lead.
It was one December night in the 1940’s that forever changed the way Mr. Winston saw diamonds. Inspired by the way the fresh winter’s snow glistened on a decorative holly wreath hanging on the door of his Scarsdale estate, Mr. Winston realized the similarities between the beauty of nature and diamonds. In the same way the intertwining leaves, not the branches, created the sculptured shape of the wreath, Mr. Winston decided that diamonds, rather than their settings, should dictate the design of his jewels.
“ The love of showing off diamonds is human nature”
T
his philosophy led Winston and his designers to revolutionize modern fine jewelry design, by creating a signature design technique known as “clustering. By grouping together different cuts of diamonds and
setting them in delicate platinum, Mr. Winston and his designers transformed jewels into three-dimensional sculptures, full of movement and life. Pear, marquise and round brilliant diamonds, set and angled in perfectly matched proportion to capture the maximum brilliance and sparkle from every direction. Today, the Winston Cluster is one of the House’s most coveted motifs. From the breathtaking Wreath necklace, to delicate cluster pendants and the iconic cluster earrings, the collection serves as the cornerstone of all Harry Winston design, and continues to inspire future generations of iconic jewels.

Octa Quantième PerPétuel case diameter 40 or 42 mm, in 18K red Gold or in Platinum. mechanical calibre with automatic winding reference 1300.3 in 18K rose Gold with off-centre rotor in 22K red Gold. Functions: perpetual calendar watch with instantaneous jump and window display of the day, date (double), month and leap year in the centre by a hand. Chronometric 120-hour power reserve indicator
QP automicatic movement in 18K red gold and the 22K rose gold rotor
At the heart of the independent F.P. Journe Manufacture, a place where autonomy has been achieved through the verticalisation of production, great horological tradition is a subtle blend of know-how and innovation. In this world where harmony is crafted each day, horological complications echo the desire for continual progress. 2016 being a leap year, it seemed appropriate to reconsider the Quantième Perpétuel. With the complication of this automatique timepiece, the idea was not to offer yet another version of something that has already been done many times, but to reach a new milestone – a novel way of displaying the perpetual calendar indications (until 2100). In watchmaking, ‘quantième perpétuel’ (or perpetual calendar) describes a calendar mechanism that correctly and automatically displays the date on the watch ‘perpetually’, taking into account the different lengths of the months as well as leap days.
Simply complex in two letters:
QP
Unlike perpetual calendars that are often difficult to adjust, the F.P. Journe Quantième Perpétuel is disconcertingly simple, easy to use and does not require any tools. All corrections are made via the three-position crown, except for the rapid months’ correction, which is done by a corrector lever hidden beneath the lug at 1 o’clock.
The new F.P. Journe Quantième Perpétuel (perpetual calendar) with instantaneous jump provides optimum legibility through a distinctive aesthetic that is different from that of all existing perpetual calendars. It is the first timepiece to offer all its indications on an uncluttered dial with large apertures/windows: two for the day and month and two windows for the large date, a specificity of F.P. Journe watches. The 4-year cycle is also indicated with a red ‘L’ for the leap year. The Perpetual Calendar is a difficult complication to make - but everything depends on what you actually want to achieve. When F.P. Journe decides to create a new watch, it must be new - and not just cosmetically. All other QPs have “dragging” displays - meaning they all jump at different times. This is why their user’s manuals warn you not to manually adjust the displays between 10 PM and 2 AM, as the gears are already engaged. F.P. Journe thus embarked on a task that became extremely “complicated” – that of creating an ingenious instantaneous jump system in which all indications jump at exactly the same time. This system is designed to accumulate, then instantaneously release energy at the precise moment the date, day, or month changes.
F.P. Journe’s Quantième Perpétuel jumps in 16 thousandths of a second! And to think that it takes 10 times longer to blink your eye! The jump is so fast that it is almost invisible to the naked eye. And this is where the complication comes in. There is a tremendous amount of energy contained in what we call a dynamic movement - especially when the indicators are windows rather than hands (carrying thus much more weight). This ingenious system makes it impossible to damage the movement by manually changing the date.
The month corrector is hidden behind the lug
Fittingly, the self-winding movement associated with this rare and widely appreciated complication is manufactured in 18 carat rose gold, like that of all the brand’s precision chronometers. It is based on the exclusive Octa 1300.3 calibre, with all the complications of the Octa line being inserted into one identical calibre. It also features the exclusive off-centre F.P. Journe 22 carat red gold rotor, which provides the watch with optimal winding for a power reserve with retrograde indication of over 5 days or 120 hours. Thus, as with every F.P. Journe watch, apparent simplicity turns out to be … not so simple. But how reassuring and heartening it is to know that FrançoisPaul Journe’s constant quest for perfection enables us to experience true novelty.
