tai chi school- major year 3 project project location: Jinbi Square, Kunming, China design idea The idea for this design came as a result of the time spent on the site and observing the interaction between the two main groups of people using the square every day. The sunken square is currently being used by the people who do Tai Chi there everyday, as well as the group of teenagers who hang out at the roller disco next to the Tai Chi studios. Despite having learned how to live with each other, the loud music from the roller disco is obviously interfering with the calmness and tranquility needed when practising Tai Chi. Therefore, the idea I had in order to solve this problem was to design a Tai Chi School in order to provide the Tai Chi people with a new place where they can practise in peace, without having to relocate and while still having access to the square if desired. The design comprises of two volumes: the main school building which will incorporate a restaurant at the ground floor, two Tai Chi studios at the first floor and a roof garden containing a third studio. The second volume will be accommodation for the students enrolled at the school and will feature a central atrium running through the entire height of the building, single and double bedrooms, shared kitchens on each floor and a relaxation and gaming area in the basement. The accommodation unit there will be elevated, starting at the first floor, while under it, the ground floor area will be left open, creating a direct link between the gates and the sunken square. This void will end with a set of terraces descending from ground level into the square.

event.space.form brief

The project’s aim was to create a design which would be related, in any way, with 1914. The openness of the brief was an opportunity to come with some really creative ideas and concepts which would respond to one site located within the town centre of Huddersfield.

concept

The concept behind this design is the Vortex, which stood at the base of Vorticist movement and one of its characteristics is represented by the a dynamic and aggressive exterior which draws everything around it towards its centre, which by comparison, is very tranquil and peaceful. The way this concept is integrated in the pavilion lies in the journey that people will go through. The spiral shape of the Vortex will be found in the layout of the four individual spaces of the structure. The pavilion will comprise of a central courtyard around which all the other spaces unfold. The courtyard, just like the centre of the vortex, will be a very tranquil and peaceful space, which will draw people in, after they passed through the other spaces which will be more dynamic and busy.

event

The event I decided to create is related to the experience of the soldiers who served in the First World War. The idea was to design a pavilion which would take visitors through a journey where they can experience, in a conceptual way, different stages of the War, from the very beginning, when the war was announced, through to the end of it, when peace was reinstalled. The way this would happen is through the way the spaces are designed, through materiality, shape and atmosphere. The design aims to trigger emotions and to make people realize what the Great War meant as well as to make them aware of how important and valuable peace is.

space

The pavilion will be located on the site next to the bus station. I chose to use this site mainly because I thought that currently it is an underused space with great potential. The fact that it is next to the bus station means that generally there is much pedestrian traffic, but that is also due to it being right at the edge of the town’s commercial centre.

form

The design will comprise of a temporary structure, which would be on the site for four years, the length of the First World War. Being temporary means that the materials used for building it should be lightweight, easy to assemble and dismantle and should not affect the current site in any way. Although the concept behind this design was the Vortex, I decided that the fluid, circular elements found in it’s shape will be integrated into this construction through the movement pattern as well as the way all the spaces unfold around the central courtyard which becomes a focal point within the design.

Because the most important aspects of this design are the journey through the pavilion and the interior spaces which help create the storyline for this journey, I decided that on the outside, the pavilion should be left as simple as possible. The pavilion will comprise of four rectangular volumes which work with the existing geometry of the site and which form a central courtyard between them. On the exterior of each volume, I created different elements which give a hint of what is going on inside the pavilion, but without revealing to much of it. This way, people can come in and explore all of the spaces. The diversity and uniqueness of the interiors makes up for the exterior simplicity of the pavilion and this way a sense of balance is created.

geometry

The unique geometry of this site makes it particularly interesting within the town centre of Huddersfield. s seen in the plan views. the site comprises of a fluid, circular shape A which, right in its centre, encapsulates a square formed by markings on the pavement. Given these characteristics, I decided to take advantage of the central part of the site, which measures roughly 20 x 20 meters, and create a design that is perfectly integrated within the site’s square geometry.

holmfirth wellbeing and mindfulness centre design idea This is the scheme for the Wellbeing and mindfulness centre designed in Victoria Park, Holmfirth. The design incorporates a Cafe at the top floor, a large Yoga/ Meditation Studio at the middle floor and a Spa/ Relaxation Suite at the bottom floor. The building will be located at the top of Victoria Park and in order to minimize the impact on the environment, it will be built into the slope of the site. Apart form reduced impact on the environment, other advantages of building it this way include better natural insulation, keeping relatively constant temperatures inside and thus reducing the cost of heating and cooling; a relatively unobtrusive presence in the surrounding landscape as well as a quieter interior environment.

Middle floor plan

Bottom floor plan

Sitting right on top of Victoria Park, people coming from the bottom would have to walk quite some distance until they arrive at the building and because of that I have decided to change the current layout of the site, by adding a new alley that meanders through the park. In addition, different sculptures will be scattered throughout the park, to add to the experience of walking up to the building.

approach and exterior design

Arriving at the Cafe, at the top floor of the building could represent a bit of a reward and after the long and potentially tiring walk up, people could get a how cup of coffee or tea and sit out on the terrace if the weather is nice, looking over the town and Holme Valley in the distance. The image above is an example of how this experience might be perceived by people.

load transfer

environment The building would benefit from natural ventilation at the top and middle floors, as they sit above the ground and they have intended openings in the building envelope. Some rooms, as the office above, can have single sided ventilation. Another type of ventilation in the building would be stack ventilation, occurring in the centre of the building, due to the warm, stale air rising through the openings in the floor slabs and leaving the building through the central skylight which will have operable elements. At the bottom floor, ventilation would have to be exclusively mechanical and for than, a heat recovery system will be used.

500 words of design pavilion RIBA Love Architecture Festival 2015

In June I got involved in the design and build of the “500 words of design pavilion for the RIBA Love Architecture Festival 2015. The laser cut pavilion was assembled in Greenhead Park, in Huddersfield and for 2 days it was used as a space where people could gather and listen to architecture- related talks, delivered by architects, artists and even students, attend different workshops and even listen to some acoustic music played by a few local bands. The pavilion was also used for displaying art created by some of the students who took part in the event.
