VALERIYA LASKOVA INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Valeriya Laskova ABOUT ME

My name is Valeriya. I am a 4th year student in the Bachelor of Interior Design program at Humber College. Interior design is my second career path and my passion, which I am lucky to have discovered after several years of searching for the missing component in my studies and professional life in the science field. I believe in bold choices that make my heart sing and in hard work every day to be a better version of myself, both professionally and personally. This package reflects my search for my personal style as an interior design student. It is a living and ever-evolving document that will continue to grow with me during my future years in interior design. I hope my work is engaging for the viewers and gives a sense of who I am as a designer in training.

CIRRUS RESTAURANT SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

Melbourne, Australia

To design a full-scale restaurant for an existing brand that offers an innovative spatial experience, while meeting all functional, legal and health safety requirements. CIRRUS RESTAURANT CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Statement

Diagramming

CIRRUS offers an unforgettable seafood experience in Melbourne, Australia. The concept of this design will revolve around the role of water. Water is home to the seafood served at the restaurant. The water cycle on Earth is responsible for the formation of cirrus clouds, which give the restaurant its name. Water is the essence of life and given Australia’s climate, it has always been one of the central elements in aboriginal stories, ceremonies, rituals and art. This design conceptually explores the relationships between the life on Earth and the main ingredient of life, water, as it relates to its symbolism in Australian aboriginal art. STRATUM OYSTER POP-UP RESTAURANT

Flexible locations

In teams of 4, design a mobile pop-up restaurant using standard 8’x20’ shipping containers. The popup restaurant offers a limited menu of food and drink and travels to various locations, such as food expos and music festivals. The idea is to come up with a versatile design solution that is functional, but at the same time daring and fun.

STRATUM OYSTER DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The pop-up restaurant for Stratum Oyster begins its journey in Melbourne. Deriving from the Latin word for “layered,” stratum celebrates the concept of layered ocean zones, namely, Sunlight, Twilight and Midnight. The zones in our design are arranged vertically from the sunlit rooftop patio bar, topped with a feature aquarium, to the Twilight dining area within the central space, and finally ending at the back of the house on the ground level representative of the Midnight ocean layer. We will take you on the journey into the depths of the ocean in our unique pop-up restaurant on one of the busiest beaches in Melbourne!

GEORGIAN BAY COTTAGE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

Township of the Archipelago Georgian Bay, Ontario

To design a cottage on a small private island for a retired couple. The clients are stewards of the environment and want a cottage the blends into the nature of the region, is practical and has a unique feel. Design to conform to all applicable zoning requirements. Uneven topography of a rocky island presents an added design challenge.

GEORGIAN BAY COTTAGE CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Statement Based on the client’s preference for a simple, resilient design that stands the test of time, the concept of this cottage revolves around the timeless A-frame style. An iconic image of a leisure dwelling, A-frame is truly unique in its form.

This design combines the classical A-frame construction with modifications to respond to unique site topography. The common areas and the bedroom wing are two different structures located on separate rocks that are connected with a glass-covered breezeway for easy access, which also adds interest to the otherwise simple layout. Careful planning of this design results in a happy marriage between a style statement and practicality, creating a unique and cozy retreat for the client on a picturesque island on Georgian Bay.

HEDONISM WINES RETAIL DESIGN

Distillery District, Toronto, Ontario

To design a new store location for an existing wine boutique, change the branding to suit the new concept and the new site. Respect the National Historic Site status and the applicable restrictions.

HEDONISM WINES CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Re-Branding

Inspiration

As the brand name implies, this design revolves around the concept of pleasure. The new Hedonism Wines location at the Distillery District provides its clients with a holistic experience that triggers all the senses and culminates with the ultimate pleasure of wine tasting. To understand how humans experience pleasure, I researched how our brain functions— certain brain regions become activated when we feel pleasure. I drew inspiration for the spatial representation of the concept from an image of the brain connections visualized with MRI. The intricate patterns of delicate connections inspired a design with soft, curved lines and a central focal structure that resembles the MRI image of the brain connectome.

The overall mood of the space is intimate and subdued, with red dominating the scene to immerse the clients into the atmosphere of indulgence, satisfying their deepest pleasures of wine selection and tasting.

REINA CONDOS AMENITY SPACE DESIGN

Competition Winner

Etobicoke, Ontario Competition for amenity space design at Reina Condominiums. The competition was open for local, national and international students in interior design and architecture on the undergraduate and graduate level.

To incorporate innovative spaces beyond the typical party room and fitness facilities, focusing on the needs of families with children; creativity and presentation are key.

REINA CONDOS CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept The design I propose aims to unite the condominium residents into one community, where many essential daily needs can be met on site. I drew my inspiration for this design from the ant colony. Ants are social animals and their colonies have highly organized structures that centre around the nursery, where they raise their young in a protected environment. My design prioritizes the needs of families with children and draws parallels to the organization of the ant colony. Similarly to an ant hill and its chambers, my design incorporates curves and has an asymmetrical layout with many flowing, organic lines. Its ceiling resembles the ant hill itself, with the middle area being higher than the perimeter and curved surfaces covering the entire space. The result is a space that has a very dynamic feel, reflective of the busy lifestyle of most modern families.
