The Publisher Cheri Leavy I had the privilege of participating in a focus group of UGA students last week organized by East West Bistro marketing director Holly Stanfill, who is also one of our Bulldawg Illustrated (BI) sales associates. Part of the mission of the study was of great interest to me. It was to better understand how these young people use media and get their information. We gleaned some valuable data. Sure some of it we could have predicted like that they are all into facebook but they also told us some not-so-obvious influences such as they do the crossword puzzles in the papers so if you want to market to them in print you might put it near the crossword! By the way, we added a crossword in this issue on page 16 and we have a group “Friends of Bulldawg Illustrated” on facebook that we keep current so check and check on the student report card for media. The group and our sharing made me take a harder look at how we approach things at Bulldawg Illustrated and to think about how we can continue to appeal to many generations. Let’s face it, you are typically a bulldog from birth to death so we have a tall task to try to be relevant to that large a demographic and have something for everyone as well as reach them in their preferred method. We are up for it! We talked about texting and twitter. One of the students noted that they don’t use twitter to find out what to do although sometimes seeing an event or offering mentioned might remind them. No, the main use of twitter for them is to follow celebrities and keep up with pop culture. Hmmmm, I can relate a little. We follow bulldog celebrities like @coachmarkfox and @markricht. Believe it or not, I have found our @bd_illustrated followers on twitter are of all ages. It is not just a super young forum and neither is facebook for that matter. Some of those that talk and share the most on twitter about the #dawgs (that is the hashtag you use to share with anyone else who is chatting about our beloved bulldogs on twitter) are a little older than students. Some of the most talkative are @allyugadawg who is a biotechnologist after achieving her undergraduate and graduate school degrees from UGA and @DavidPollack47 who played for UGA in the early 2000s and is now a father and family man and @RexRobinson5 who was the kicker on the 1980 National Championship team. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of students like Lady Dog @AngelRobinson33 and our favorite dunker @TLeslie1 and our own BI Athens editor @RyanScates that tweet and engage with UGA fans. Of course we strive to provide places for UGA fans of all ages to engage whether in print or online. Uga mascot owner Sonny Seiler once said Bulldawg Illustrated is a great place to keep up with the dawgs and with each other, which was music to our ears. It ties in with what one student blurted out to the group, “I pick up Bulldawg Illustrated to look at the photos!” Well, at the end of the day, even with our incredible sports coverage, don’t you all look first at BI photos to see whom you might know? I loved talking with these students about their peeves and preferences in media. I am already implementing some of their suggestions. We are always interested in sharing ideas and bettering our business. If you have any compliments, comments or complaints, please feel free to contact me at cherileavy@bellsouth.net. Check out page 2 as well and www.bulldawgillustrated.com for a photo gallery of the focus group. You can also watch a youtube video on our guide2athens’ website of this fashionable group that we included in the Street Chic Vlog. It is a video blog that chronicles good style found in the streets of Athens and in this case in East West Bistro. Thanks again to the focus group for participating!

The EDITOR Ryan Scates The UGA Spring Semester is headed into the midterm just as Georgia athletics are shifting into high gear. Over the next two weeks, Dawg fans can look forward to catching both basketball squads, the defending national champion gymnastics team, the Diamond Dawgs, softball team, and both tennis teams defend their home turf in Athens. This time of year, all of the successes coming from so many different teams make it easy to be a Georgia Bulldawg. And as usual, putting Issue Four together has been an absolute blast. The highlight of the last two weeks for me was definitely shooting the men’s basketball game against South Carolina on February 13. Upon an off-the-wall, or ceiling, request, Georgia Sports Information Director Claude Felton granted me access to take pictures from the catwalk above the court in Stegeman Coliseum. While I was originally looking forward to getting some original shots from above the court, I only got about 5 steps out on the catwalk before my knees went weak and I started tiptoeing my way to the center of the arena. “You looked more nervous than an Alabama booster at an NCAA hearing,” described a buddy of mine who saw me creeping above the court. And honestly, the prospect of dropping my glasses or a lens cap onto the floor below had me even more nervous than that. I sure did not want to go down in Georgia history as the dimwit who cost the Hoop Dawgs a game because Travis Leslie got taken out by a falling camera on a fast break with only seconds to play. Fortunately, I stayed out of the way of the game, the Dawgs rolled the Gamecocks, and we have some cool shots for you to enjoy both in print and online at www.bulldawgillustrated.com Also, the voice of the Diamond Dawgs and Bulldawg Illustrated Sports Editor Jeff Dantzler has put together a nice list of reasons why Georgia Baseball is set to have a solid 2010 season. With so much even-year success in the past, I have already started planning a road trip to Omaha this June. Issue Four also marks new student intern Chelsea Lipocky’s debut with Bulldawg Illustrated Athens. Chelsea brings sports coverage experience from ESPN, campus knowledge from the UGA Visitors Center, and social graces from Delta Zeta sorority that are sure to take this publication to a new level. I hope you enjoy her interview with members of the ever-popular UGA Dance Dawgs spirit squad. The midterm approaches and spring break beckons for students, while tax season and the Winter Olympic curling finals wait for local Athenians existing in “the real world.” Whatever group you happen to fall into, I hope Issue Four provides you with all you need to know regarding the Dawgs and what’s happening beyond the hedges. JefF DanTzler Foley Field has been a field of dreams in 2000s The magic began in 2001. After a nine-year absence from the NCAA Tournament and a 47-year Southeastern Conference championship drought, Georgia followed up its first league title since 1954 with a heart-stopping Regional Championship victory fueled by the most magnificent individual performance in school history. The Bulldogs lost the Athens Regional opener to Georgia Southern on a Friday night, but fought back to eliminate Georgia Tech in loser’s bracket the following morning. Later that evening, All-American Jeff Keppinger hit for the cycle and the Dogs took an extra inning thriller from Southern to advance to the championship round. It would take two wins over upstart Coastal Carolina to move on to the Super-Regional. The Dogs took the first one in easy fashion, then came the winner-take-all showdown with the Chanticleers. Down a run in the top of the ninth (with the Dogs the designated visitor) with two out and All-SEC star Andy Neufeld aboard at first, Keppinger blasted a 2-1 pitch over the left center field wall sending Foley Field into a state of unabated frenzy. Keppinger went 5for-5 with three homers and then started the double play in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. The Bulldogs then took two of three from Florida State at home, powered by Keppinger, to advance to the College World Series. Ron Polk coached the Dogs to Omaha, then returned to his longtime home Mississippi State. Athens native and Georgia alum David Perno, a five year assistant for Polk and Robert Sapp who recruited most of the stars of the ’01 squad, was then hired to take over the program. Perno guided the Dogs to the 2002 NCAA Tournament, marking the first time in school history that Georgia had been to back to back postseasons. In 2004, the magic of Foley Field hit new heights. Clemson needed two Sunday wins to capture the Athens Regional and advance. SEC champion Georgia lead 9-2 in the middle innings, but the Tigers roared back to win 10-9, deflating the Dogs and headed to the decisive battle with all the momentum. Georgia, again as the road team at Foley, trailed 64 in the ninth. But Bobby Felmy and Jason Jacobs delivered back-to-back homers to tie it. Clint Sammons went deep in the 10th to put Georgia in front 7-6. The Tigers had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but All-American closer Will Startup, pitching on heart and guts, came

up with back-to-back strikeouts as the stadium exploded. Georgia then swept two straight from Tech in Atlanta to capture the Super and move on to Omaha. Georgia faced elimination again in 2006, but took three straight, including back-to-back victories over Florida State to take the Regional and advance to the Super. South Carolina, which was 0-4 against the Dogs on the season, hit five straight homers to win Game One. But the Bulldogs roared back to capture two straight and advance to the College World Series for a second time in three years and a third in six. SEC champion Georgia fell in the opener of the Athens Regional to David Lipscomb and trailed Louisville 5-2 in the seventh, staring elimination squarely in the face. All-American sensation Gordon Beckham, Georgia’s greatest player, hit a game-tying homer and the Dogs were off and running. Georgia would roll back and win two straight, setting up a showdown with Tech. The Dogs needed two wins to advance and Tech required one. Georgia would steam-roll the Yellow Jackets 8-0 and 18-6 to move on to the Super. With the program having accumulated an incredible fan following, the Dogs split the first two with N.C. State at Foley, then exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the championship game. With the contest long secured, Beckham stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and the overflow throng realized it would be his final Foley Field plate appearance. With the crowd chanting “let’s go Gordo, he blasted a Titanic blast over the left center field wall to tie the school career home run record while pumping his fists towards the bedlam-filled throng on Kudzu Hill. All-American closer Josh Fields, who closed out the ’06 Regional and Super and the ’08 Regional, put the finishing touches on the victory. For the third time in five years, Perno had guided Georgia to Omaha, establishing the Bulldogs as one of only six schools in the country to make that many trips over that time. Georgia had gone from doormat to one of the nation’s premier programs with Perno establishing himself as one of America’s elite coaches. In seven postseason events at Foley Field in the 2000’s, the Bulldogs were an incredible 16-0 when facing elimination. It’s time to start a new decade and next up for Georgia is the shot at another first, three straight NCAA Regional berths. With Perno at the helm, the sky’s the limit for Bulldog baseball.

JD’s 10 reasons why they will contend 1. Strength in the Rotation – In all of Georgia’s Omaha runs of the 2000s, the Bulldogs have had strength in all three spots for the Southeastern Conference pitching rotations. The three-game sets prepare postseason teams for Regionals, Super-Regionals and finally Omaha. In ’04, it was Ruthven, Hyle and LuBrano. In ’06, it was Brown, Westphal and Holder down the stretch. In ’08, it was Holder, Dodson and Moreau with Montgomery coming on late. This season, the hard-throwing ace righty Justin Grimm will be the Friday night anchor. Senior Jeff Walters, who has good stuff, moves from the pen to the Saturday slot. On Sunday’s, it will be Michael Pallazone, who has sky high ceiling. 2. A potentially Explosive Outfield – Georgia’s sophomore outfield class has the potential to be great. They all had some outstanding moments as freshmen, and now with a year’s experience, the trio of (from left field to right) Johnathan Taylor, Zack Cone and Peter Virdin could make the Bulldogs go at the plate and in the field with plenty of speed to burn. With freshman Zach Taylor from Statesboro in the mix, this group over the next two years has the potential to rival Georgia’s dynamic group of Johnathan Wyatt, Joey Side and Bobby Felmy (plus Kyle Keen and Matt Olson) that helped drive the Dogs to Omaha in ’04 and ’06. 3. A BIG one-two closer tandem – And I mean big. Six-foot-six senior lefty Alex McCree and 6-4 sophomore righty Cecil “the Diesel” Tanner look like a bookend set of offensive tackles and they can both bring it. McCree was slowed by mono last year, and now moves back to the bullpen where he was part of the nation’s best on Georgia’s run to the 2008 College World Series finals. His hit list includes Florida State, Miami, Stanford, Clemson and Tech. McCree has a plus fastball and good breaking pitch. Tanner has an explosive fastball. David Perno’s three College World Series squads all had All-American closers: Will Startup in ’04 and Josh Fields in ’06 and ’08. 4. Newcomer bolstered Bullpen depth - A number of freshmen and junior college arms will give Georgia some serious bullpen depth. In 2008, led by Fields, McCree, Dean Weaver and Will Harvil, Georgia’s bullpen was the country’s best – highlighted by a record 40 inning SEC scoreless streak. With a rotation and back end of the pen that could be very good, these new Dogs – plus senior righty Steve Esmonde, senior lefty Justin Earls and sophomore southpaw Chase Hawkins – will be called upon to bridge the gap and fill in those valuable midweek starting roles. 5. Offensive Improvement on the Right Side – Chase Davidson, who will take over for one of Georgia’s best ever players, Rich Poythress, at first base and Levi Hyams, who goes back to second, both showed flashes of excellence as freshmen. If they both make the jump as sophomores,

Georgia will have some big time power and athleticism on the right side. 6. Impact at Shortstop – You’ve got to be good at shortstop to make it to the College World Series. In 2001, it was All-American Jeff Keppinger. Justin Holmes, an AllSEC selection and current assistant coach, manned the position in ’04. It was the the great Gordon Beckham in ’06 as a freshman and in ’08 as the country’s best player. This year, it will be highly touted freshman Kyle Farmer. He won’t be asked to be an all-star, just to make the plays and be a productive offensive performer. Hyams could move over from second if Farmer goes through growing pains. 7. May in the Hot Corner – A Freshman All-American a year ago, the Effingham County native emerged as one of the conference’s best players, both at the plate and in the field. Colby May is one of the country’s top returning hitters and he’s stellar with the glove at third, arguably the toughest position to play in college baseball. The horsehide gets up on “the corner” in a hurry. If May can avoid the sophomore slump and match his freshman numbers, he should lead the Bulldogs back to the postseason. 8. Depth from back-to-back classes – All of Georgia’s starting position players (including catchers Brett Deloach and Christian Glisson) are freshmen and sophomores, as are many of the arms. That means they’ll all be back in 2011, too. The Bulldogs staff of David Perno, pitching coach Brady Wiederhold, recruiting coordinator Jason Eller, Holmes and Kris Edge, taking over for the beloved Brian Jester, has put together two straight strong classes. Last year’s group helped Georgia make it to back to back regionals. This year’s crop on top could make history. 9. An opportunity for a Program First – Georgia has never made it to three consecutive NCAA Regionals. But this program has accomplished a number of firsts in the remarkable Perno era. The Bulldogs have been to 10 NCAA tournaments all time, and five have come under Perno’s watch. With three College World Series trips and a pair of SEC titles since 2004, Georgia has been one of the country’s most successful programs, with that combination of stability and excitement. This season gives the Dogs a chance for another first. 10. Fight for Chance – The heart-breaking, heartwarming, uplifting and courageous story of Chance Veazey will serve as unparalleled inspiration for the program. “I promise you, no team will fight harder than us this year,” said Coach Perno. They’re fighting for Chance.” Upcoming Home Games: - Presbyterian, Feb. 24, 5 p.m. - Stetson, Feb 26-28, 5 p.m., 2 p.m., 2 p.m. By Jeff Dantzler, photos by Ryan Scates

Dance Dawgs

When it comes to UGA basketball games, you never know what’s going to happen. Is Trey Thompkins going to break 20 points? How many rebounds is Jasmine Hassell going to bring down? One thing you can always count on is that the Dance Dawgs will show up with great routines and a lot of spirit. As a fan, I completely underestimated the amount of time and work these woman put it, and the asset they are to the game experience. I talked to Emily Ethridge and Reneau Kadis, the team’s captains, about what it is like to be a Dance Dawg here at UGA. Both are seniors, and this is their last season on the team, but they aren’t wasting anytime being upset about that yet. How long have you been dancing? EE: I have been dancing since I was seven, but I have been a part of the Dance Dawgs since my sophomore year. RK: Since I was three, it’s my life. I’ve been on the Dance Dawgs since I was a freshman. How would you describe this style of dance? RK: Well, it’s really a lot of cheer movements and sharp motions. Also, we bring in a lot of stuff for floor routines that’s more graceful, so we are all over the place. We’re very versatile as a team, and that’s one of our strong points. EE: Everything! We do hip-hop, we do jazz, we do fun stuff with Hairy Dawg, a little bit of everything. We are very diverse; we are a multitalented group. How often do you practice? EE: We practice twice a week in addition to weights and the games. It is definitely time consuming, but we love it. RK: It is an adjustment with all the time it takes, but we are each others’ support system.

Is dancing something you want to continue is the future? RK: I am continuing it, definitely. I don’t really know in what venue yet. I am trying out for some professional teams, and I am also looking into auditioning for some things on Broadway. EE: When I graduate, I hope to go to Physicians Assistant school, but I am also trying out for a few NFL dance teams. I don’t want to stop yet. Where does the inspiration for the routines come from? EE: It’s cool, because each of our dancers has something unique to bring to the team. We all bring our own ideas and mesh them together. RK: We have so many routines, we pull moves from YouTube and professional teams, but a lot of girls bring in stuff. Almost everyone has been dancing for 18 years, so you can imagine what we come up with. We all contribute. How would you describe the atmosphere and the feelings you experience during a game? EE: High energy! We love the games, there are three or four games a week, but we are such a close group of friends, it’s fun. We love being there. RK: That atmosphere of the games is crazy. The UGA spirit is one of a kind. When it is packed in there…that is why you do it. You are in here every day, you’re tired, you don’t think you can do it, you fall asleep trying to study, but it’s worth it. From putting together routines to being there for each other when it seems overwhelming, these women do it all together. I think I can speak for all of us when I say the hard work pays off! Pros come to town, April 26-May 2 Preparations are gearing up for the inaugural Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, the only PGA Tour-sanctioned event to be held in Northeast Georgia in 2010. The tournament is scheduled for April 26-May 2 at the University of Georgia golf course. The golf tournament is a stop on the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour, which is designed to identify the players who are ready to compete and win on golf's biggest stage. The Nationwide Tour is considered the “official proving groundâ€? of the PGA TOUR, and two out of three PGA TOUR members are Nationwide Tour alumni. In addition to the top-notch golf the tournament will offer, the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA features a ticketing system that is designed to give back to the Athens area. TICKETS Fore CHARITY ™ allows local not-for-profits to sell event tickets and keep 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale. The program has raised more than $4 million for notfor-profits in other PGA TOUR communities. “Every ticket buyer will be asked to designate a not-for-profit. We will process and manage these ticket orders, with 100 percent of the proceeds going right back to the selling organizations or designated not-for-profit,â€? said Tournament Director Dave Cousart. “If a not-for-profit can sell $10,000 worth of tickets, they have just added $10,000 to their budget‌This is just another example of how the tournament is exposing new audiences to the world’s best golfers while providing signifi-

cant assistance to the community and its institutions. Participating local non-profits include the Georgia Junior Golf Foundation, Athens Land Trust, Athens Area Homeless Shelter, American Cancer Society, Athens YMCA, and dozens more. Chaired by former UGA All-American golfer and three-time Ryder Cup participant Chip Beck, the tournament will be operated by the University of Georgia’s Auxiliary Services Department. The Stadion Athens Classic at UGA will be the only event on the Nationwide Tour that is owned and operated by an institution of higher education. All net proceeds from the event will support need-based scholarships for UGA students through the Arch Foundation. Of course, an event designed to make such a huge impact on the community could not exist without the help of some dedicated volunteers. All told, more than 400 volunteers are needed to ensure smooth operations of the event. There is no golf experience required to be a volunteer. Volunteers are charged a nominal fee of $45 to help defray some of the volunteer-related costs, but all will receive a package including clothing, tickets, food and free golf valued at more than $250. For tickets and information on how to become a volunteer, visit http://www.stadionathensclassic.uga.edu/ By Ryan Scates, photo provided by Jackson Spalding
