The Publisher Cheri Leavy I am not going to dedicate this space to the disappointing news about one of our quarterbacks being dismissed from the football team or the exciting news of two of our teams winning titles this weekend. Well, actually I will take room to congratulate the Equestrian team for a National title and the men’s golf for their winning the SEC title. It was pretty spectacular to follow Coach Haack’s golfers on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Club on an absolutely gorgeous day Saturday. There were lots of us on hand to cheer them along. My husband, Vance, was there again Sunday to see the fellas with their trophy after a tight race to the title. Ok, back to my topic for today, ‘Not Since You.’ What I want to share with you in this space is my movie endorsement and the reason it is relevant to you as a Bulldog fan is that the movie is set in our beloved Athens. You must see this film! The cast is great, the story is moving, the cinematography is poignant and of course the setting is perfect! Athenian, movie producer and familiar face from Epting Events and Harry’s Pig Shop Ashley Epting was committed to bringing a film to Georgia after he graduated from NYU in 2000. Epting was attracted to the script they adapted for ‘Not Since You’ for multiple reasons such as the plot of friends reuniting after college at a wedding after they have all evolved and changed over time as well as it referencing them in New York during 9/11 and the emotions from watching the twin towers toppling, which Epting also experienced. Like Epting, I felt an incredible relation to the plot and characters since I am in my mid thirties and there is a connection to your friends but the relationships change, the issues change and the way you look at life changes. The film delves into this in a beautiful way. But what I loved most was the sense of place and that the movie was set in Athens, Georgia and it spotlighted our area so well. You will recognize the extras as folks you see around town and of course you will see our landmarks like the University of Georgia Arches, Jot’Em Down BBQ and the tree that owns itself. I was so thrilled with all of the little details they incorporated into the film to make it authentically Southern and Athenian. All I saw them drink was Coca Colas and Terrapin beer! They got a little moonshine and Nascar in the mix. I am pretty sure I saw some Lilly Pulitzer sundresses at the wedding reception, which exudes summertime in the South. And the Athens music scene gets referenced at The Wuxtry spotlighting R.E.M., Widespread Panic and the B52s. And the drawls and accents were deemed authentic from my perspective and lifetime in the South! Vance smiled at my sentimentality during the premier we attended as I got teary eyed with pride when my favorite character Sarah (played by Sarah Rue) pushes her love interest outside of the Arches and teases him that he can’t walk under them because he didn’t graduate from UGA. After the film, Epting was able to Skype in director and co-writer Jeff Stephenson on the Cine big screen and we talked about the making of the film. This was such a great treat. Stephenson was complimentary of Athens and how she embraced everyone working on the film. With Epting’s help and example, Stephenson was able to get past the hokey clichéd Hollywood portrayal of the South and its people. A must see film! The EDITOR Ryan Scates It was on a Wednesday that I got the call every Georgian aches for around this time of year. “Ryan, what are you doing Sunday?” the voice on the other end of the line asked. Before I could stammer out a response came the following, “How would you like to head over to Augusta for the Masters?” Pandemonium reigned within my brain. A lifelong dream come true, I would be among the “patrons” to see a Sunday green jacket awarded in Augusta. Being the eternal optimist, even as a 22-year old college senior whose lifetime low golf round was a 76, when walking around Augusta National I could not help but daydream about what it would take to earn that other type of invitation to the Masters. You know, the one where they let you play in the tournament and hold those ridiculous news conferences and stuff. It didn’t take long for me to grasp the gravity of the process that it takes to reach the pinnacle of a sport. Only then did I realize what makes Athens such an incredible sports town. The path to greatness is all about process. Before Gordon Beckham was winning rookie of the year awards for the Chicago White Sox, he was cutting his teeth at shortstop under the lights at Foley Field. Before John Isner could claim being the number two American tennis player, he was avoiding double faults in front of mere dozens of spectators at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. And before Torrin Lawrence was setting world records in track, he was…well, never mind Torrin Lawrence. My point is that in Athens, we sports fans have the unique privilege to see world class athletic talent undergo the process it takes to produce world class competitors. Whether it be in tennis, track, swimming and diving, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, or equestrian, there is no reason not to don your red and black and get out to support these athletes who are following their dreams. And, if you want a textbook example of athletes grinding towards their dreams, be sure to cheer on former Georgia golfers Paul Claxton and Chris Kirk at the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Athens Classic at UGA. The tournament starts April 29 and is held at the UGA Golf Course. Maybe you read legendary Georgia sideline reporter Loran Smith’s recent column on the importance of process. It detailed the old practice habits of a tour pro who would come to the UGA Golf Course every year to prepare for the Masters. Away from the glory of the PGA Tour, the humble pro would give the UGA Golf team pointers on their short game while trying to overcome the mental block of winning every kind of tournament except for a major. On Sunday afternoon at Augusta National, the University course-tested pro walked up the 18th fairway with multiple putts to win his third green jacket and fourth major. In front of a television audience of millions, Phil Mickelson demonstrated the fruits of a process-focused course of training. Here in Athens we have the opportunity to see the process unfold daily.

One and done is demeaning to college hoops Georgia got great news when its two sophomore hardwood stars Howard “Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie announced that they would forego the National Basketball Association Draft and return to school for their junior seasons. This speaks to an extremely bad problem with the sport and the unquestioned deterioration of the collegiate game. Think back to the 1980s, it was the golden era of both the NBA and the collegiate game. In the pro’s, there was the Lakers, Celtics and Sixers. Magic, Bird, Kareem, Dr. J and the emergence of Michael Jordan. College basketball featured epic national championship games. There was Jordan’s game winner in North Carolina’s 63-62 victory over Georgetown in 1982. The next year was Lorenzo Charles dunk and N.C. State’s upset of Houston. Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas beat Hakeem Olajuwon and Houston in ’84. Then came Villanova’s upset of Georgetown. Next was a threepoint Louisville victory over Duke. In ’87, it was Keith Smart and Indiana beating Syracuse. The next year was Danny (Manning) and the Miracles clipping mighty Oklahoma. The decade wrapped with Michigan topping Seton Hall by a point in overtime. Not many games the last 15 years that rival, these, huh. Granted, this past tournament was filled with the usual splendor, thrills and buzzer beaters – and a championship game that played its way into the memorable category. From 1979 through 1984, Magic Johnson, Darrell “Dr. Dunkenstein Griffith, Isiah Thomas, James Worthy, Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing were the MVP’s of the Final Four. That’s five NBA Hall of Famer’s who made the incredibly elite “top 50 players of all time list, plus another standout. The Final Four MVPs since 2004 have been Emeka Okafor, Sean May, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Mario Chalmers, Wayne Ellington and Kyle Singler. There are some good players there, no doubt, but not any potential Hall of Famers I think it could be agreed. College basketball and the NBA need desperately to get on the same page. Football is golden, with the realization that if one is strong, and it makes the other even better. High schools play on Friday and those players feed to the colleges who play on Saturday. Then the college players go to the National Football League, which plays on Sundays. The easiest solution would be for
the NBA to go to either the NFL Draft rule, where a player can’t be picked until he’s three years out of high school, or the baseball system. If a drafted player doesn’t sign with a professional club coming out of high school, he can’t get re-drafted until after his third year. This system would be a better fit for baseball. The next LeBron James and Kobe Bryant could go straight out of high school. But coaches like Mark Fox wouldn’t have to worry about players like Leslie and Thompkins until after their junior years. It was certainly great for Georgia baseball knowing the Jeff Keppinger, Gordon Beckham, Josh Fields, Rich Poythress and Will Startup would be in Athens for at least three years. The “one and done policy, utilized by Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose and John Wall – amongst others – is downright demeaning to college athletics. And the mindset it creates is even worse. When players have two good games now, many, instead of thinking they could be taking steps to becoming a consistently good player in the Southeastern or Atlantic Coast Conferences, often now think they’re ready for the NBA. What a nightmare for coaches. As great as the tournament is, the television ratings have been sagging. Fans just aren’t familiar with the players. It shouldn’t come as a shock that schools like Butler and George Mason have made recent Final Four runs and that the number of mid-major schools topping Bowl Championship Series power conference teams increases yearly. The mid-majors have teams that have played together and are planning on playing together for extended years. At some point, “big schools may change how they recruit, tired of getting bounced early. Was O.J. Mayo worth it for Southern Cal? And as great as Kevin Durant was at Texas, the Longhorns lost in the first round. Duke, likely partially by accident, fell into this situation. The powerhouse Blue Devils didn’t boast an uber-talented roster of players eyeing early career jumps to the NBA. Look what they fell into. So for Georgia, no question, it’s great news that Leslie and Thompkins are back. But it’s a scenario that Fox, or any other college basketball coach, shouldn’t have to worry about. The game and sport will be better if the NBA and college hoops can ever share a mutually beneficial co-existence the way King Football does.

Stadion Athens Classic
Nationwide pros to experience scenic and tough UGA course beginning April 29 If you have been over to the UGA Golf Course recently, you may have noticed some changes. The azaleas and dogwoods are out in all of their spring glory, and the course is looking green with anticipation for the upcoming Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, Northeast Georgia’s own Nationwide Tour event held Thursday April 29-Sunday, May 2nd at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Construction crews have been cruising up and down Riverbend Road since January. Some new features to the course include an impressive new stone entryway and the signature Georgia “G” logo stenciled into the 1st, 10th, and 12th holes in red and black, 50 yard-line style. Even among all the aesthetic improvements to the course, nothing indicates the coming spotlight to the UGA Course clearer than the sets of bleachers that have sprung up around the 13th and 18th green. Even the UGA Golf course’s clientele has been changing lately, with Nationwide Tour Pros shuffling around the E.B. Smith Clubhouse between practice rounds. Just last week talk of “this new yellow fertilizer
stuff” dominated a pollen-covered parking lot. If knowledge of local allergens is any indication, the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA is set to host a field of competitors that will be a change from the type of guys who make up the normal Sunday foursome. Of course, in the Nationwide Tour change is nothing new. Being the premier feeder to the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour’s stars annually make the jump to the worldwide stage, leaving the field wide open for a new set of stars to emerge each season. As each November approaches, competition heats up to be one of the 25 leading money winners at season’s end. “The 25”, as the money leaders come to be known, earn a PGA Tour card for the following year. Some key numbers that Nationwide Tour tournament spectators should have in mind include: - 1,179: The number of players on the Nationwide Tour’s all-time roster
- 333: The number of Nationwide Tour alumni who have earned PGA Tour cards via the Nationwide Tour Money List - 268: The number of PGA Tour tounraments won by Nationwide Tour alumni - 70.7%: Percentage of PGA Tour members who are Nationwide Tour alumni - 238,000: Approximate number of volunteers who have contributed time to Nationwide Tour events - While those are some impressive figures, none come close to comparing to the $60,000,000 that has been donated to charity by the Nationwide Tour since 1990, which has benefitted over 2,500 organizations. The Stadion Athens Classic at UGA is upholding the Nationwide Tour’s tradition of giving back to the community, and has already raised over $50,775 for Athens area charities. Tickets are still available for the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, and can be purchased at the gate or discounted online at www.stadionathensclassic.uga.edu story by Ryan Scates, photo Jackson Spalding

Women’s tennis
SEC championship to be held in Athens, April 22-25 After a tough loss to the 4th-ranked Florida Gators, the Georgia women’s tennis team has an opportunity for redemption at the upcoming SEC Championships. The 14th-ranked Lady Dawgs fell 6-1 to Florida in a match that clinched the regular season conference title for the Gators. "It was a hard match and a tough loss. It’s obviously not what we wanted to happen. To their credit, Florida played really well all afternoon," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "With that said, I think we did have some opportunities. We started too slow in doubles and that hurt us you cant spot a team like Florida 3 or 4 games to start thing off. In singles, I think we had some chances too, but just couldn’t get going soon enough. We have a lot to work on, but we’re going to get better heading into the end of our season." And the end of the season is drawing near. Because the Lady Dawgs are hosting both the SEC Women’s Tennis Championship and the NCAA Tennis Championships, the Lady Dawgs are assured of a home court advantage for the rest of the season. The women’s tennis team has won three consecutive SEC Tournament Titles, and a 2010 tournament title could take the sting out of giving Florida the regular season crown. Georgia is led by coach Jeff Wallace who is in his 25th season and has collected 538 wins in his tenure with the Bulldogs. He is assisted by Frank Polito, who is in his fourth season. The SEC Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex from April 22-25. The NCAA Tennis Championships for both men and women will also be held there May 14-31. compiled by Ryan Scates, photos by Georgia Sports Communications

Chelsea Lipocky 30th Athens Twilight is April 23 and 24 Spring is here, and in Athens, that means more than just track meets and baseball games. This April marks the 30th Twilight Criterium event held in Athens. Before you get all flustered thinking of Edward Cullen or break out your vampire cape, this Twilight is the annual bike race through downtown Athens. Over the years, Twilight has evolved from a bike race around Athens into a weekend long event that incorporates our music scene and the locals into the long list of scheduled events. The University of Georgia School of Music is hosting a Jazz Festival for the second year in a row. The busy streets of downtown are blocked off and the city transforms into a street fair with everything from live music, street vendors and outside activities make the already awesome downtown scene even more exciting. Although the main event is a professional cycling race, with qualifying rounds and intense riders, there will be plenty of events for the less experienced and non-bikers. There is a 5K walk/run that is open to anyone who wants to join in the Twilight experience. The race starts and finishes downtown on Saturday morning. For those who have more than a leisurely stroll in mind, this race can also qualify you for the mile race Saturday night. The top fifteen men and top fifteen women qualify for the chance to win $1,000 for the fastest mile time. As enticing as an extra $1,000 in my pocket sounds, I think I’ll stick to listening to music and eating a funnel cake on College Street. There is even more fun to be had by the younger members of our Bulldawg family. Throughout the weekend, there will be face painting, music, games and even racing for kids. For children ages 5-14, there will be bike races in heats, starting at 11:30 am. For those under five that still want to show off their talents, they can bring their big wheels or trikes and have their own race outside City

Hall at noon. In true competitive fashion, each child will receive a metal, along with a tshirt and a prize package. Ever had a secret desire to become a BMX rider? Me too. This year Twilight will also include both amateur and professional BMX stunt competition. There will be a complete bike course of jump boxes, quarters, spines, wall rides, quarter pipes and more! This street competition has been described as “breakdancing on bikes. I can not imagine what that entails, but I know it will be exciting! Twilight is an event that is always marked on the calendars of students and locals in the area. It is the last weekend before the reality of finals sets in. With venues downtown open a few extra hours, and all the events going on during the day and night, this weekend affair is sure to provide a much needed distraction from the stress of our academic lives. Overall, the three-day event encompasses intense competition, music, great food, and an organized schedule of activates for every age.

GeorgeTTEs
The University of Georgia established the first dance team in the Southeastern Conference in 1959, with the founding of the Georgette dance line. Currently, the Georgettes consist of 12 girls who are proud to represent The University of Georgia as members of The Redcoat Band Auxiliary Program. They perform with the band during pregame and half time at all home and most away football games, including Florida and a bowl game. They can also be seen at pep rallies, parades and various other appearances throughout the Athens community. Join the Georgettes for Spirit Night at Loco’s on Harris St. on Thursday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m. Traci Raines (center front row) and Carson Michalski (center middle row( 1. How long have you been dancing? Traci- I have been dancing since I was 3 years old. However, I did not dance in high school because I played basketball and did football cheerleading. Carson- I have been dancing since 3. I danced competitively for 13 years and was a member of my high school dance team. 2. How would you describe this style of dance? Traci- Georgettes typically do a technical jazz style of dance, however, we often incorporate other styles throughout the season as well. Carson- The UGA Georgettes perform at during halftime at the football games and typically perform a jazz routine, pom routine, and a kick line. 3. How often do you practice? Traci- During the fall, Georgettes practice from 5:00-7:30
A UGA tradition since 1959
every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We also have practice on Saturday mornings before home games! Friday and Saturday practices are held at Woodruff Field and are open to the public. Come out and watch the Redcoats and Georgettes during these practices! We love having an audience! 4. Is dancing something you want to continue in the future? Traci- I would love to teach dance to 3, 4, and 5 year olds in the future, and I would also like to coach a high school dance team at some point while I pursue my career in Early Childhood Education. Carson- I am going to school to become an Occupational Therapist; however, I would love to continue dancing through teaching children or using dance as a therapy technique with special needs children. 5. Where does the inspiration for the routines come from? Traci- Our choreography comes from everywhere! We often get ideas from dance competitions, youtube, cheer competitions, and other collegiate dance lines. Carson- Most of the girls on the line have been dancing their entire lives and have grown up constantly making up routines in their head. Basically, it just comes pretty naturally! 6. How would you describe the atmosphere and the feelings you experience during a game? Traci- Dancing in front of over 92,000 people is an experience that can not adequately be described in words. There is a rush of energy from the fans, the football team, and the other Redcoats that is truly exhilarating. There is
nothing like a Saturday in Athens! Carson- Experiencing the game as a Georgette is unlike anything else! Being able to form the tunnel for the football players as they march on the field, standing on the sideline listening to Battle Hymn, and being able to be part of something so much bigger than just our dance line is an experience unlike any. 7. What is your favorite part about being a Georgette? Traci- My favorite thing about being a Georgette are the friendships that you make. This is a unique experience that you share with a handful of girls, and many of my closest friends have been or are Georgettes. Carson- My absolute favorite part about being a Georgette is the friendship. Yes, I love to dance and can't imagine not having dance in my life; however, the friendships I have made will last a life time. 8. What has being on Georgettes and being a part of the Redcoat Band taught you? Traci- Being a part of the Redcoat Band and Georgettes has taught me a lot about the importance of tradition and hard work. Traditions are created through hard work, dedication, love, and perseverance, and learning that has had an incredible impact on my life. "Once a Dawg, always a Dawg...How sweet it is!" Carson- Not only being on Georgettes, but being a part of the Redcoat Band has taught me how to work as a team creating music and entertainment for so many that are so proud to be Georgia Bulldogs! These experiences have made me who I am today and I am so grateful for every member of the Redcoat Band that I have had the pleasure of meeting and hope to meet by the end of this year! compiled by Cheri Leavy, photo by Blane Marable
