The bridge location on this site will improve the circulation of the area and the access to the meadows. The footbridge should encourage the access to the meadows and increased circulation possibilities, which means that the footbridge should encourage traffic. One way of achieving this is to ensure DDA compliance. This bridge achieves a 1 in 20 gradient which is one of the requirements. To achieve this, landscaping must be conducted at the lower (meadow) level and raised approximately 2 meters. The landscaping also ensures a smooth finish onto the meadows with same or lesser gradient The red arrows in the force illustration diagram displays the compressional force the bridge must withstand. The green arrows illustrate the tension forces that the suspension cable subdues. The compressional and tension forces of the structure must work together for structural integrity. By pre-fabricating the main span, it is possible to test and pre-stress the structure for optimal quality and stability. The blue arrows represent the shear forces that can occur within a bridge, sufficient measures explained in the technical details will be applied to reduce the risk of the bridge breaking. A single under-spanned suspension structure it prone torsional flexibility, represented by the orange arrow. The crossing “star beams and the pinned connections in the landings will reduce this flexibility to a minimum. In the design stage of the bridge, calculations considering the load of pedestrians must be made. To achieve this, one must estimate the pedestrian traffic. The calculations should also pay attention to the vibrations caused by synchronized walking patters.

It is assumed that the soil on the river bank which the foundation is constructed upon is not stable. Sufficiently deep piles must therefore be applied to work relatively to the resistance of the soil. The piles and raft foundation will be constructed with in-situ concrete and reinforcement bars. The foundations should be made large enough to support the loads and forces of the overall structure. It should also be large enough to support the size and weight of the crane used in this construction system. The foundation and abutment must not only consider the gravity loads but also be calculated to withstand possible horizontal settlement/movement due to thermal expansions etc. The pinned joints designed for the superstructure will however impede the thermal expansion.

The Gilbert Rooms was my first high-rise design at University. The assignment Environment building on the existing site of the building

were, designing a new “School of the Built called Gilbert Rooms.

The Terrace Assignment The Terrace was my first ever assignment at University. We were tasked to design a terraced house, inspired by an architect and a certain building. I chose Frank Lloyd Wright and his masterpiece “Falling Water as my inspiration. These designs were also to be done by hand. By hand we had to make Elevation Drawings, Perspective Drawings, Plan Drawings and Free-Hand Sketches.
