Preparing the voice

Practice makes a man perfect, it might seem boring initially, but it helps in recognizing the correct notes. It is better to practice with guitar or piano, as it will guide one to stay in tune. Phrasing

Phrasing is when a singer stops or breaks the lyrics to take inbetween words and sentences. A wrong phrasing can create an embarrassing situation. To make the phrasing sound normal, it should be done along with the punctuation marks. When the singer requires catching a quick breath and to finish the phrase flawlessly, he/ she should do that in between punctuation mark so that it does not sound awkward and is also not noticeable. Singers can even mark the lyrics sheet with slashes so that he/ she remain comfortable taking pauses and remember where to take breath. To have a strong breath one can practice couple of exercises that will help in building up strength in this area.

Focusing on the correct posture

Breath travels from lungs straight through the mouth; an incorrect posture can block or twist the passage. Relaxing the muscles in shoulders, vocal cords, and face is also very beneficial. How one stands has a big impact on the sound quality, it is therefore advisable to stand with legs around shoulder-width apart and also keep the shoulders back and relaxed. If there is any problem from abdomen to head, it is sure to affect the sound. Many jaw and facial exercises besides warm-up activities that help muscles on the shoulders, face, and vocal chords to relax.

Eating correctly It is essential for singers to watch out what they eat. Nothing soothes the voice more than water. One should avoid dairy and thick drinks at least three days before any performance.

Do not expand initially Expanding the range without being comfortable in the previous one can damage the vocal cord. Learn to disengage muscles that are not required for singing as engaging wrong muscles will cause strain. It is important to keep the throat relaxed and breathe properly. The more one practices the better singer he/ she becomes, therefore make sure to warm up first to avoid damage to vocal cords. Voice is a very delicate instrument and straining it without being warmed up can really damage the vocal cords. Try yawning a lot as one gets better tone and easy high notes when mouth and jaw is in this position.
