WELCOME I cannot imagine a more thrilling way to begin the month of December and the Christmas season than with Bach’s Christmas Oratorio—so that is what will happen! For the first time in our 53-year history the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers will join with the Orchestra of the Bach Society of Minnesota to present this monumental work. I am delighted to share the podium with Matthias Maute, Artistic Director of the Bach Society of Minnesota. A personal note: Every Christmas morning at the Brunelle house, before any gifts are opened, we all listen to the opening chorus of the first cantata, “Christians, Be Joyful”— our three children are now parents themselves, but returning to our home they know how Christmas morning will begin! So, I am delighted that these two music organizations will join together in presenting this glorious music—and doing so in an acoustic that would have made Bach happy—the Basilica of St. Mary. Thank you for joining us for Bach’s Christmas Oratorio; may this be a thankful and beautiful season for each of you. —Philip Brunelle, Artistic Director and Founder

THE PROGRAM AND TEXTS BACH’S CHRISTMAS ORATORIO CANTATA I

Sponsored by Steven Mayer and Susan Doherty in honor of Margo Mayer and Betty Sloan

Singing, rejoicing, give praise and shout gladly; honor what God in the highest has done! Banish all worry, forbid all complaining, join in with praises and joyfully sing! Serve the Almighty with beautiful singing; praise to God’s Name, who over all things is reigning!

And it came to pass in those days, that a decree from Caesar Augustus went out, that all the world should pay their taxes. And everyone went together to be counted, each going into his own city. And also there came up Joseph from Galilee, out of Nazareth, to the City of David in Judea, which we know as Bethlehem, for Joseph descended from the royal line of David’s house, that he would be taxed in Bethlehem with Mary; and she was great with child, his wedded wife. While they were there, the time for Mary came, that she should be delivered.

Now will my dearest bridegroom come; now will the child of David’s line bring comfort and peace from heaven, when he is born, our Savior. Now is the star from Jacob rising, his beam breaks forth on earth. Come, Zion, put aside your tears and weeping, your help is given birth!

Prepare yourself, Zion, with tender emotion, the fairest, the dearest will soon come to you! Your appearance today must be full of radiance; meet him, the Bridegroom, with loving devotion!

How shall I then receive you and meet you, Lord of all? Desire of every nation, adornment of my soul! O Jesus, Jesus, grant me yourself the light to see, so that which brings you pleasure is understood by me!

And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and in swaddling clothes she wrapped him and laid him cradled in a manger, for there had been no other room in the inn for them.

Kyrieleis!

He came to earth, a child so poor, Who will express this love from heaven, the love our Savior shows this day? of his mercy we are sure, Yes, who can understand or fathom how he is moved by our dismay? and grants the wealth of heaven here, The Son of God comes to the earth to bring salvation with his birth. and brings the realm of angels near. He chose to be a child like every other. Lord have mercy!

Page 6

Sovereign Lord, O mighty ruler, Jesus Christ, Thou blessed Savior O how you disdain all earthly vanity! He who holds the universe, who created all its splendor, will in rugged manger slumber.

Ah, dearest Jesus, rest your head upon a humble cradle bed. Within my heart I do implore, that I forget you never more!

CANTATA III

Sponsored by Colin and Pat Aldis

Ruler of Heaven, attend to our praises; may you take pleasure in hearing our voices, when all your people with psalms do adore! Hear that our hearts are rejoicing and praising, when we now daily our homage are paying, since our salvation is firmly assured!

And when the Heavenly Host had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other:

Let us go now to Bethlehem so we ourselves may witness that which has happened there, for God the Lord has declared it.

He came to save his own, his Israel; he sent from Zion help to save us and our dismay has ended. See, shepherds, this is what he did: go, this is what you will find!

Kyrieleis!

All this he did for us alone, his great love for us was shown. Rejoice, all Christians, we are free, and thank him for eternity. Lord have mercy!

29. DUET (JoAnna Johnson, soprano & David Gindra, bass) Herr, dein Mitleid, dein Erbarmen, tröstet uns und macht uns frei; Deine holde Gunst und Liebe, deine wundersamen Triebe machen deine Vatertreu wieder neu.

Lord, your mercy, your compassion comforts us and makes us free. With your gentle love and favor, which are wonderful forever, God, give your grace and love, always new.

And the shepherds hastened and found the parents, Mary and Joseph, and saw the child resting in the manger. When they had seen the baby, they proclaimed what had happened, all that was told to them about the little child. And all those who heard their words marveled about these sayings that the shepherds from neighboring fields had told them. And Mary kept all these words that the shepherds told her, and pondered them in her heart. Keep, my heart, this heavenly wonder; deep within your faith it lives! May these great wonders, the deeds of God’s mercy, ever empower your waning faith and trust!

Page 7

O yes, my heart shall remember the blessed wonders of this time which are my soul’s great bliss, and the thankfulness it seeks to render.

33. CHORALE lch will dich mit Fleiß bewahren, ich will dir leben hier, dir will ich abfahren, mit dir will ich endlich schweben voller Freud ohne Zeit dort im andern Leben.

Lord, in you I trust forever; live for you, die to you, all my life I offer. With you then, I will be feasting, full of joy, for all time, life everlasting.

And the shepherds left, returning home, bringing praise to God for all of the things that they had heard and witnessed, which had been told to them by the angel.

Rejoice and sing! That Christ the King was sent from God, in human form was vested; and he adored is Christ the Lord, of David’s line, the King of all creation.

Ruler of Heaven, attend to our praises; may you take pleasure in hearing our voices, when all your people with psalms do adore! Hear that our hearts are rejoicing and praising, when we now daily our homage are paying, since our salvation is firmly assured!

– INTERMISSION — CANTATA V

Sponsored by Philip Asgian in honor of Young Musicians

43. CHORUS Sponsored by William Hauser Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen, dir sei Lob und Dank bereit’. Dich erhebet alle Welt, weil dir unser Wohl gefällt, weil anheut unser aller Wunsch gelungen, weil uns dein Segen so herrlich erfreut.

Glory be to God Almighty; glory, praise and thanks we bring. All the world must worship you, for your care is ever new, and this day every heartfelt wish is granted, as in your blessing we greatly rejoice.

When Jesus our Lord was born in Bethlehem, in the land of Judea when Herod was the ruler, behold, there came from the land in the East, three Magi to Jerusalem, inquiring:

Where is the newborn King, the King of Judah? Seek him within my heart; he dwells here, and will not depart! For we have seen his star before in eastern regions, and have come that we may adore him. Rejoice, for you this light is shining; you see the rising of salvation! My Savior, you are the light, which heathen shall enlighten; and though they know you not as yet, but come to honor you already. How bright, how clear your light does shine, beloved Jesus mine!

46. CHORALE Dein Glanz all Finsternis verzehrt, die trübe Nacht in Licht verkehrt.

Your light all darkness drives away; The troubled night turns into day. Lead us to pathways glorious; so that your face, and heavenly grace may always shine upon us!

Page 8

Enlighten all my darkened reason; enlighten my heart with the brightness of your grace! Your word shall be the shining light, to guide all my work on earth; this keeps from my spirit all evil endeavor.

When Herod heard of the newborn Christ Child, he was frightened, and the whole of Jerusalem with him.

And why are you so fearful? Why can the presence of my Lord awaken fear and trouble? O, should you not be glad, heartily rejoicing, since he proclaims in birth the restoration of all people?

And Herod gathered all the High Priests and all the Scribes among the people to come. And he asked them where this infant, the Christ Child, “Where will this child be born?” And they said to him: “In Bethlehem, the land of Judea, for this is what has been written by many prophets: “And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judea, are by no means the least among the Judean princes, for from you shall I bring forth a ruler, a governor for Israel, my people.”

51. TRIO (Carey Shunskis, soprano, Sadie Nelson, alto, Bill Pederson, tenor) Ach, wenn wird die Zeit erscheinen? Schweigt, er ist schon wurklich hler! Ach, wenn kommt der Trost der Seinen? Schweigt, er ist schon wurklich hler! Jesu, ach, so komm zu mir! Schweigt, er ist schon wurklich hler!

Oh, when is the time arising? Hush, he is already here! Oh, when is my comfort coming? Hush, he is already here! Jesus, oh, do come to me! Hush, he is already here!

52. RECITATIVE Mein Liebster herrschet schon.

My Savior rules alone. A heart that seeks and loves his presence, and fully lives in his acceptance, is my dear Jesus’ throne.

Can my heart its goodness measure when the light is kept away? Darkness hides the blessed treasure until the night comes into day. Then the sun will shine upon us, brightening God’s own gift within us.

CANTATA VI 54.

Lord, when the haughty foes are raging, then grant that we in faithful trusting upon your help and power stand! We trust in you alone for rescue, the powers of evil cannot harm us, and foes leave our land undefiled.

Then King Herod secretly called the Magi and met them with anxiously questioning, when the star had first been witnessed? He sent them to Bethlehem and said: “Go your way and search with fervor for the infant; and when you find him, come and tell me, that I may go and worship.” Page 9

Imposter, you may seek to crush the Master; take every evil ruse to trap and harm our Savior. He, the most powerful of all, is resting in God’s hand. Your heart, deceitful as it is, in every sly reproach to God’s own Son, whom it seeks to destroy, is known to him.

God controls with just one motion all our feeble, treacherous might; and he breaks all strength and pride. God Most High speaks but a word, and the pride of all is ended. O, we must at once change our thoughts as moral people.

When the Magi heard what the king was saying, they departed. Behold now, the star, which they had seen and followed upon their journey, moved ahead of them, until it came and stood brightly shining where the infant lay. When the Magi saw this, they rejoiced greatly and went into the house; and finding the little child with Mary, his own mother, and falling down at his feet, they worshipped him, and offered treasures: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

59. CHORALE Sponsored by Anonymous in honor of Klara Schäfer Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier, O Jesulein, mein Leben; ich komme, bring und schenke dir, was du mir hast gegeben.

I kneel beside the manger bed, and look to thee, my Savior. As Host, you offer wine and bread, but what have I to give you? Alas, no incense, myrrh or gold, can match the worth of heart and soul; so take them all in thy control!

And God forewarned them in a dream, that they should not go again to visit Herod’s palace; and so, they returned another way into their own land.

61. RECITATIVE So geht!

Farewell! Enough, my treasure will stay here; he will remain with me, and I will stay with him forever. His loving arm is there to rest me in his care. He stays with me and never leaves me; he shall be my bridegroom forever; in him I find my soul’s endeavor. I am assured he loves his child; my heart loves him, he is adored; him will I ever honor. What enemy could now destroy such perfect joy and gladness? O, Jesus, you are friend and joy; and when I cry to you in fear: “Lord, help!” let your help be near!

Page 10

Now, come you haughty foes, to frighten, what fear can you instill within me? My Lord, my shield is here with me. You may assail in dreadful manner, and threaten even to undo me. Behold my Savior dwells with me.

63. RECITATIVE (Emi Kaliski, soprano, Judith Melander, alto, Ben Brunnette, tenor, Michael Schmidt, bass) Was will der Höllen schrecken nun, Was will uns Welt und Sünde tun, da wir in Jesu Händen ruhn?

The evil powers of Hell subside, No worldly powers of sin preside, when we in Jesus’ arms abide.

The shout goes up victorious, that Jesus Christ is born! The foes have been defeated, He rules as King and Lord. Over sin and death and evil, the battle has been won; and in our hearts forever we praise Him, God’s own Son.

Under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute, BSM brings fresh perspectives and collaborations to build a diverse community of music lovers who perform, promote, and appreciate the music of J.S. Bach and those he inspired. This season, the Bach Society of Minnesota (BSM) celebrates its 90th year! For more information, visit bachsocietymn.org

MATTIAS MAUTE, Artistic Director

(Sponsored by Anonymous and Anonymous in memory of Arnie Kustritz) Two-time JUNO Award winning conductor, composer, recorder, and flute soloist Matthias Maute has achieved an international reputation. In 2016 he was named artistic director of the Bach Society of Minnesota and in 2019 of the professional choir Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec. Impressed by his artistic approach, The New York Times described the orchestra he conducts in Montreal, Ensemble Caprice, as being “an ensemble that encourages the listener to rehear the world.” Maute’s recording of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos juxtaposed with Maute’s own arrangements of Preludes from Shostakovich’s Op. 87 was hailed by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross as standing out “for its fleet, characterful approach” and “its fresh, vibrant colors”. Matthias Maute has made some twenty recordings on the Analekta, Vanguard Classics, Bella Musica, Dorian, Bridge and ATMA Classique labels. He is co-artistic director of the Montreal Baroque Festival and artistic director of the Méénat Musica Concerts noncerto concert series. Page 12

Matthias Maute created Mini-Concerts Santé during the pandemic in 2020, delivering 9,000 Mini-Concerts Santé to 70,000 people in Montreal, Quebec and Canada while providing 3,000 hires of professional singers and musicians during difficult times which was awarded OPUS Award Musical Event of the year 2020.

The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers have established an international reputation because of their extensive catalog of recordings and broad range of unique repertoire. This chamber choir, whose members hail from a wide variety of professions, is bound together by their skilled artistry to create what The Times of London has described as a “flawless” sound.

The VocalEssence Singers Of This Age (VESOTA) is a community of Twin Cities high schoolers engaged in expanding what it means to be a choir and encouraging a wider circle of participation in the artform. Presenting music ranging from classical to hip-hop, they use creativity and collaboration to build an accepting community, equipped with the skills to lead social change in our society.

VOCALESSENCE VINTAGE VOICES VocalEssence Vintage Voices is an exciting choral program that integrates the arts into the everyday lives of older adults. Guided by a desire to create a welcoming atmosphere and remove barriers for participation, these choirs sing to build community, combat loneliness and isolation, and improve physical and emotional wellbeing.
