WELCOME

THE PROGRAM

This year marks the 27th anniversary of VocalEssence WITNESS, celebrating the contributions of African Americans to our shared American heritage! The program has grown tremendously over the course of those years. What began as a single concert with a single school partner now embraces 55 schools throughout our metropolitan region thanks to our phenomenal WITNESS Teaching Artists and WITNESS Teacher Resource Guide, which serves as a model nationwide. We take great pride in providing materials that help teachers celebrate the African American experience through the arts.

This year we are especially pleased to welcome vocal activist Melanie DeMore back to the Twin Cities as our featured guest. Melanie passionately advocates for the building of community through dialogue and song. I know you will be captivated by her dynamic presence and generous spirit. We are also delighted to share the stage with over 100 young people from our four partner schools: Franklin Middle and North High in Minneapolis and Parkway Middle and Johnson High in St. Paul. Since October, these young people and their teachers have diligently prepared to become one dynamic chorus. I know you will be absolutely amazed by their sound and inspired by their presence. Now, I encourage you to sit back and prepare to bask in the glory of our community at its finest—people of all ages and backgrounds coming together in song! — G. TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS KEEP YO’ LAMPS Rosephanye Powell Keep yo’ lamps burnin’ The time is drawin’ nigh. Don’t you get weary children, The time is drawin’ nigh. Traditional

So we must follow the river’s light Heed its calling through the night, Whose promise pierces our bleakest strife, Beckons us to new life. Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus Steal away, steal away home, I ain’t got long to be here. Joseph Gryskiewicz and Daniel Kantor

WOULD YOU HARBOR ME? Ysaÿe Barnwell

HARRIET TUBMAN Rollo Dilworth

Would you harbor me? Would I harbor you? Would you harbor me? Would I harbor you? Would you harbor a Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, A heretic, convict, or spy? Would you harbor a runaway woman or child, A poet, a prophet, a king? Would you harbor an exile or a refugee, A person living with AIDS? Would you harbor a Tubman, a Garret, a Truth, A fugitive or a slave? Would you harbor a Haitian, Korean, or Czech, A lesbian or a gay? Would you harbor me? Would I harbor you? Ysaÿe Barnwell

Harriet Tubman didn’t take no stuff Wasn’t scared of nothing neither Didn’t come in this world to be no slave And wasn’t going to stay one either

FREEDOM’S PLOW Dominick DiOrio Hold on! Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! Heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me I am the way.” Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! When my way gets dark as night, I know the Lord will be my light. Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! You can talk about me as much as you please, The more you talk gonna stay on my knees. Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! When I get to heaven gonna sing and shout, Be nobody there to put me out. Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! Hold on! Keep your hand on the plow, hold on! Traditional Spiritual RIVER HOLY Daniel Kantor Alone we wander, through darkness roam River holy, guide us home, At water’s crossing, the sacred seam Dawn of freedom we dream. As lightning shadows what we betray Rights the journey to the day When all in shackles go unenslaved, Hope of longing still saves.

2016-2017 Season

“Farewell!” she sang to her friends one night She was mighty sad to leave ‘em But she ran away that dark, hot night Ran looking for her freedom She ran to the woods and she ran through the woods With the slave catchers right behind her And she kept on going till she got to the North Where those mean men couldn’t find her Nineteen times she went back South To get three hundred others She ran for her freedom nineteen times To save Black sisters and brothers Harriet Tubman didn’t take no stuff Wasn’t scared of nothing neither Didn’t come in this world to be no slave And didn’t stay one either Eloise Greenfield THE GIFT TO SING Emily Feld Sometimes the mist overhangs my path, And blackening clouds about me cling; But, oh, I have a magic way To turn the gloom to cheerful day — I softly sing. And if the way grows darker still, Shadowed by Sorrow’s somber wing, With glad defiance in my throat, I pierce the darkness with a note, And sing, and sing. I brood not over the broken past, Nor dread whatever time may bring; No nights are dark, no days are long, While in my heart there swells a song, And I can sing. James Weldon Johnson

WE CAN MEND THE SKY Jake Runestad My sister was an English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe and inclusive environment for East African immigrant students to learn (many of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students’ parents risked their lives to come to the USA—a valiant act of love. I wanted to tell their story through music and asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home and coming to the USA. I sifted through more than 100 poems and found the powerful words of 14-year-old Warda Mohamed that became the backbone of the composition. Using Warda’s poem and two Somali proverbs, “We Can Mend the Sky” is a musical depiction of one’s journey as an immigrant and an affirmation of hope as we all embrace the diversity around us. —Jake Runestad Let My Dream Come True In my dream I saw a world free of violence hunger suffering a world filled with love Now awake in this world I beg, let my dream come true. Soo baxa. (Let’s go.) Naftu orod bay kugu aamintaa. (To save your life, run with all your might.) If we come together, we can mend a crack in the sky. SING ’TIL THE POWER OF THE LORD COME DOWN Traditional, arr. Ysaÿe Barnwell and Melanie DeMore Now let us sing ’til the power of the Lord come down. Lift up your voice, don’t be afraid. Sing ‘til the power of the Lord come down. Amazing grace, How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found, Was blind, but now I see.

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. BALM IN GILEAD Traditional, arr. Melanie DeMore There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul, you can tell the love of Jesus and say, “He died for all.” Traditional SPIRITUALS MEDLEY Traditional, arr. Melanie DeMore Wade in the Water Wade in the water, wade in the water children Wade in the water, God’s gonna trouble the water. Run, Mary, Run Run, Mary, run! I got a right to the tree of life. Go Down, Moses Go down, Moses, way down to Egypt land, Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go. Way O’er in Beulah Land Way over in Beulah Land. We’re gonna have a good time. Traditional SANCTUARY Melanie DeMore Description: “Sanctuary” is a stick pounding selection composed specifically for the 2017 VocalEssence WITNESS program.

We’re marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We’re marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God. 2016-2017 Season

GLORY

John Stephens, Lonnie Lynn, Che Smith, arr. Mark Brymer

Chorus: One day when the glory comes it will be ours Oh, one day when the war is won we will be sure Oh glory Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon Formed against, yes, glory is destined. Every day women and men become legends. Sins that go against our skin become blessings. The movement is a rhythm to us. Freedom is like religion to us. Justice is juxtaposition in us. Justice for all just ain’t specific enough.

One son died, his spirit is revisitin’ us. Truant livin’ in us, resistance is us That’s why Rosa sat on the bus That’s why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up When it go down we woman and man up They say, “Stay down”, and we stand up Shots, we on the ground, the camera panned up King pointed to the mountain top and we ran up Chorus Now the war is not over, victory isn’t won And we’ll fight on to the finish, then when it’s all done We’ll cry glory, oh glory! Selma’s now for every man, woman and child Even Jesus got his crown in front of a crowd They marched with the torch, we gon’ run with it now Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles. From dark roads he rose, to become a hero; Facin’ the league of justice, his power was the people. Enemy is lethal, a king became regal Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful. We sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed through Somewhere in the dream we had an epiphany Now we right the wrongs in history, No one can win the war individually. It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people’s energy, Welcome to the story we call victory. The comin’ of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory Chorus John Stephens, Lonnie Lynn, Che Smith

A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1991, VocalEssence WITNESS was created to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the fine arts and to our common cultural heritage. By commissioning and programming rarely heard works by African American composers, and featuring African American guest artists, we help broaden ideas about African American musical expression and introduce new voices to our audiences through concerts, recordings, and broadcasts. Past VocalEssence WITNESS concert guest artists and composers have included James Earl Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Billy Taylor, Moore by Four, Sounds of Blackness, Morehouse College Glee Club, Sweet Honey In The Rock®, and many more.

SCHOOL PROGRAM

Consisting of three components—Artist Workshops, Teacher Resources, and a Young People’s Concert—the VocalEssence WITNESS School Program is geared toward students in grades 4-12, and has reached more than 130,000 students since its inception. ·

Young People’s Concert (YPC): An abbreviated version of the VocalEssence WITNESS public concert, the YPCs reach more than 6,700 students through two performances at the Minneapolis Convention Center Auditorium.

·

Artist Workshops: VocalEssence offers WITNESS partner schools two free days of workshops that allow students to work with a VocalEssence WITNESS Teaching Artist. Teaching Artists explore the annual program theme through their artistic discipline, creating an integrative academic experience that combines the study of African American culture with art, music, social studies, literature, theater, character building, and other areas of school curriculum. Unique this season, schools will have the option of bringing a group of students to participate in an Underground Railroad simulation, a program facilitated by the Kamau Kambui Circle for Cultural Learning.

·

Teacher Resources: Teachers at participating schools attend a half-day orientation seminar that engages them with professionally-written, culturally relevant lesson plans that fulfill Minnesota Academic Standards and introduces them to the VocalEssence WITNESS Teaching Artists.

VocalEssence WITNESS is critical for many students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a professional event at a major concert hall. We believe that an education and performance experience like VocalEssence WITNESS gives students an opportunity to learn from exceptional role models, increasing their self-esteem, and creating a desire to continue exploring ways to express themselves through the arts. For more information or to sign up for the 2017-2018 VocalEssence WITNESS School Program, contact Rob Graham at robert@vocalessence.org or 612-547-1458.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! is a unique program designed to bring the talents of composers from Mexico directly into Minnesota classrooms. Now in its ninth year, Mexican composers Samuel Pascoe and Rodrigo Cadet are spending four weeks over the course of three visits with elementary, high school, and community choral singers, exploring Mexican cultural and choral music traditions, and writing new music specifically for each ensemble. The program will culminate with a premiere performance of the new compositions at the VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! Community Concert at Ordway Concert Hall on May 2, 2017 at 7 PM. Selected works will be published by VocalEssence Music Press and distributed through Graphite Publishing. Tickets for the concert are free and available at vocalessence.org. New this season, VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! is extending to Chicago, IL. VocalEssence is supporting Chicago a cappella as they implement ¡Cantaré! with Rodrigo Cadet in the Chicago metro area, which will premiere new choral works at the ¡Cantaré! Chicago Community Concert on May 12, 2017 at Rockefeller Chapel.

WELCOME There are certain artists that excel in many disciplines: such an artist is Stephen Hough. Many of us have admired his artistry as a pianist— actually, as one of the greatest pianists of our time! What many people do not know is that he is also an exceptional composer who strives to bring words to life in new ways. When I came upon his marvelous choral music I knew that we needed to invite Stephen to be with us as both performer and composer! His artistry as a pianist and his depth of interpretation are magnificent—and when I asked him what composer he wished to play on a program with his own music he immediately answered—Debussy. Stephen’s deep faith resonates in his choral music and his juxtaposition of texts with the Latin mass give us new meanings for these ancient words. Thank you, Stephen, for what you continue to bring us in your creativity as both a composer and a pianist. —Philip Brunelle, Artistic Director and Founder

TEXT AND TRANSLATIONS JUST AS I AM Stephen Hough Just as I am, without one plea, But that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidst me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea, all I need in Thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot, To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thy love unknown Hath broken ev’ry barrier down; Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Charlotte Elliott

MASS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE Stephen Hough Mass of Innocence and Experience is a missa brevis with poems of William Blake alongside traditional, plainchant settings of the Latin ordinaries. Its four movements are arranged as follows: KYRIE: plainchant (women) Poison Tree – Blake (men) Sins of Hatred GLORIA: plainchant (men) Spring – Blake (women) Joy of Creation SANCTUS: plainchant (women) O Rose – Blake (men) Sins of Flesh AGNUS DEI: plainchant (men) Little Lamb – Blake (women) Joy of Creator There are thus two poems from the Songs of Innocence sung by the women, and two from Songs of Experience sung by the men, with the plainchant acting as a sort of cantus firmus throughout. In the Kyrie and Sanctus the evil and suffering in the poems is opposed to, yet perhaps finds a solution in, the Mass texts; whereas in the Gloria and Agnus Dei the poems and texts are in partnership, amplifying the meaning of each. The evil in the Kyrie-Poison Tree is almost a Cain and Abel scenario, the beginning of human life with the tragedy of original sin; the Gloria-Spring is the angelic hymn at the birth of Christ as if ushering in a new season or era; in the Sanctus-Rose the holiness of God is set alongside the disordered passions of humans; and in Agnus-Little Lamb we see almost a vision of the end of time, with Christ gathering the lambs under His arms. The music of the Blake settings is based on transformations of the plainchant melodies. In the two movements where the texts are most opposed (Kyrie and Sanctus) the melodies are closest; whereas in the Gloria it is the harmonic implications of the Missa de Angelis which are utilized. At the Kyrie climax, as the Blake text reveals more and more its nightmare vision of hatred and bitterness, the music is of a style more associated with love. The overlapping sequences, based on the Kyrie chant, are almost banal as they rise towards the pinnacle of the murder and the imploring canonic outburst of the women’s choir. In the Gloria and Agnus Dei the women’s music is of the utmost innocence—either songs at play or a gentle lullaby. —Stephen Hough Kyrie (Poison Tree) Kyrie eleison

MISSA MIRABILIS Stephen Hough I was delighted when Martin Baker asked me if I would like to write a Mass for Westminster Cathedral because I had had one in mind for a while, and this commission encouraged me to get down to work. The central idea, and the central movement, is the Credo—in some ways the most problematic text to set because of its length and the non-poetic nature of the words. But instead of setting the words simply in a descriptive way, I wanted to explore aspects of the psychology which underlies the whole nature of belief and doubt. The Creed contains line after line of densely-packed, carefully articulated theology—as watertight and restrictive as Nicea could make it. But I, like most Catholics, have said these words quickly, without thinking fully of the depth (or daring) of what is being expressed. And what does ‘believing’ in these pregnant clauses actually mean? When I stand and affirm that the Holy Spirit “proceeds from the Father and the Son” what am I saying? And what about those who have ceased to believe and yet still rattle off blithely the bold print in the Missal after the sermon and before the offertory? In my setting of the Credo I divide the upper from the lower voices as if innocence from experience. Only the soprano and alto sing the word ‘Credo’, constantly interrupting the fastpaced mutterings of the tenors and basses. What at first is an encouragement to believe becomes a despairing cry as the men’s pattered rote turns into defiant unbelief. Only the clause about baptism is sung with any sense of faith—a last hope dashed as the final clauses about resurrection and eternal life fizzle out. A final ‘Credo’ is sung an octave lower by the upper voices— quietly, as if tired and shattered from their earlier, futile exertion.

‘peace’ the organ plays an interlude of mounting agitation and desperation based on chromatically altered fragments of the opening vocal chords. As this passage reaches its high point, with still no sign of ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’, the chorus sings a fortissimo ‘Agnus Dei’ to the music which had accompanied the baptism clause in the Credo. Finally, as a climax to the whole work, the ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’, is sung at its highest volume and highest pitch—a variation of the descending scale first heard in the Christe Eleison. The spell has been broken, all gradually becomes calm, and the piece ends musically as it began with the Dona Nobis sharing the same melody of consolation as the Kyrie, despite a fleeting fragment of the unsettled chorale from the work’s opening bars. And why ‘Mirabilis’ ? Purely personal: I gathered my year’sworth of sketches for this Mass together in September 2006 and wrote three of the movements in three days; the following day I had a serious car crash, overturning on the motorway at 80 mph; I stepped out of the one untouched door in my completely mangled car with my Mass manuscript and my body intact; I wrote part of the Agnus Dei in St. Mary’s Hospital, waiting for four hours for a brain scan. I was conscious, as I was somersaulting with screeching metallic acrobatics on the M1, of feeling regret that I would never get to hear this piece. Someone had other ideas. —Stephen Hough

Star Tribune 2016’s Top 10 by Rohan Preston MinnPost's 25 Best of 2016 by Pamela Espeland

The whole work opens with a brief, muted, unsettled chorale (which we will later hear as the blazing series of chords punctuating the statements of the Credo). This moment of doubt lasts only for seconds and melts into the Kyrie proper, sung to music of sweet, simple consolation. The Gloria is joyful in its outer sections, based on an organ rising scale and a choral falling zigzag motive. In the central ‘Qui Tollis’ section the zigzag motive pipes away in repeated high chords, and the chorus now sing the rising scales. There are a few prophetic hints of the Credo here and there, in the ‘miserere nobis’ for example. The Sanctus and Benedictus aim to contrast the divine and the human. The angel’s ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ is something beyond the universe itself in grandeur and scope, and the music here is huge, broad, immense. In the Benedictus Divinity has become Humanity in the Messianic incarnation, and the music is deliberately and sentimentally intimate—as if two people are sharing a drink in a Parisian café, with a whiff of Poulenc perhaps in the harmonies, or maybe even the sound of a distant 1950s pop tune coming from a neighboring café’s jukebox. The Agnus Dei takes the ‘Credo’ motive, sung by the upper voices, and develops it in a plaintive sequence. All is restrained and quietly expressive until the third, louder statement of the text, where the response should be ‘Grant us peace’. Instead of Page 26

Credo Credo in unum Deum; Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium.

I believe in one God; the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, light of light, true God of true God, begotten not made; being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us all and for our salvation descended from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures: and ascended into heaven. He sitteth at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; and His kingdom shall have no end.

Credo in Spiritum Sanctum, Dominum, et vivificantem: qui ex Patre Filioque procedit. Qui cum Patre et Filio simul adoratur et conglorificatur: qui locutus est per Prophetas.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; as it was told by the Prophets.

Credo in unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam.

And I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

Confiteor unum baptisma, in remissionem peccatorum.

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.

Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum et vitam venturi sæculi.

And I await the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

VOCALESSENCE ENSEMBLE SINGERS Minnesota is home to one of the truly international gems in choral music—the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers. This 32-voice professional chorus is a beloved national treasure that has been enjoyed by millions in Minnesota, around the country, and around the world. On their August 2014 Asia Pacific Tour, the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to perform at the 10th World Symposium on Choral Music, then continued on to Shanghai and Nanjing, China, for more concerts. The Ensemble Singers serve as the core of the larger VocalEssence Chorus, and returning members of the Ensemble Singers audition every year. The Ensemble Singers are renowned internationally, nationally, and locally. They were featured at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota and at the National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Dallas, Texas, where they received standing ovations for their performances of music by Mexican composers. They have been featured on A Prairie Home Companion, and performed the Midwest premiere of Jake Heggie’s choral opera, The Radio Hour. In March 2017, they will be featured at the ACDA National Convention here in Minneapolis. DONOR SPOTLIGHT Lois Quam Supports VocalEssence in Creating Harmony in Community and on Stage Lois Quam had been an occasional VocalEssence concertgoer, but after getting to know founder and artistic director Philip Brunelle in 2007, she found herself drawn deeper into the organization. “Philip’s enthusiasm is infectious. I turned to him for advice when I was hosting a series of concerts at my house, and he helped me put together some really creative evenings. I remember him sitting in my living room saying, ‘Let’s not just do the usual Beethoven.’ At one of my concerts, we sang a Lutheran hymn to its original tune, a German drinking song! Another time, we had a soprano interpret paintings by Minnesota artists,” said Quam, who shaped healthcare in Minnesota as a United Health executive, worked for Hillary Clinton at the White House and the State Department, and served as chief operating officer of the Nature Conservancy.

A lifelong “source of beauty”

“VocalEssence is so inspirational: music has a way to empower us, bring us together, and help us see new possibilities. In VocalEssence, I saw a way to make a community come alive. We need that now more than ever.”

“Called to a higher purpose”

Lois particularly treasures her experience at the 2013 VocalEssence WITNESS performance honoring pioneering African-American contralto Marian Anderson. “That concert was a really special event,” remembers Lois. “I grew up hearing my mother talk about attending a Marian Anderson concert in Minnesota in the ’40s, and what an uplifting experience that was for her as a girl. So of course, I had to take my parents. It was a beautiful evening, unique, and so moving. At one point Philip asked all the people who’d been lucky enough to hear Marian Anderson sing in person stand up, and my mom stood beaming.”

Although she herself isn’t a singer, Lois has both familial and artistic appreciation for the choral arts. “My mother was a singer in the St. Olaf College Choir, and growing up, we listened to both classical and choral music. I just loved it.” Having spent her own life uniting people to solve problems in a way that advances social good, she respects the unifying capacity of choral music. “I enjoy music as a way to bring a community together…. and to experience the feelings of deep beauty art creates within us as individuals.” It’s a value the Quam family has passed down for three generations—her son Will is musical and interned with Philip at VocalEssence. When asked about the VocalEssence endeavors she finds most inspiring, Lois points to the in-school residencies provided by programs like WITNESS and ¡Cantaré! “Bringing in composers and conductors to work with school choirs provides an amazing opportunity for students. This is work that changes lives, and I’m very enthusiastic to play a part in it.” In VocalEssence, Lois found an organization that supports both personal creativity and human unity. “This is a group that shows why choral music is special. It gives voice to a community and calls us to a higher purpose. It’s a Minnesota—and a national—treasure. And right now, when there’s so much disharmony in the world, we need the kind of harmony that VocalEssence brings.”
