ARTIST STATEMENT The name ‘Mendelssohn’ has always been important to me ever since I performed Felix Mendelssohn’s first piano concerto in high school–such rich melodies and splashy fingerwork! Then came his Midsummer Night’s Dream, the oratorio St. Paul and the Songs without Words–music I love performing. In 1983 at the former Guthrie Theater, Vern Sutton created a marvelous pastiche based on Felix’s music for the first VocalEssence benefit, and Libby Larsen’s opera, Barnum’s Bird, was premiered by VocalEssence in 2001 including the aria, Hear Ye, Israel, another Mendelssohn moment. Interestingly, the name ‘Mendelssohn’ has appeared 30 times in concerts over the past 51 years! But, what about Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix’s elder sister? At age 13 she could play all 24 Preludes from Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier by heart and as a child began to write music. However, Fanny was limited by prevailing attitudes of the time toward women; her father wrote to her in 1820 “Music will perhaps become Felix’s profession, while for you it can and must be only an ornament.” Fanny and Felix shared a great passion for music, and he arranged for some of her songs to be published under his name. In all, Fanny composed over 460 pieces of music! In 1829, after a courtship of six years, she married the painter Wilhelm Hensel and in 1830 her only child, Sebastian, was born. Fanny Hensel died in 1847 of complications from a stroke; Felix died less than six months later from the same cause. As I considered many ways of presenting a concert of both composers, I felt that it would be most interesting to focus on each one separately; with Fanny: her solo songs, followed by a vocal trio, a double choir work, a piano piece, and a cantata. For Felix: two a cappella anthems (chosen by Associate Conductor Phillip Shoultz) and conclude with the Hymn of Praise (Lobgesang), the final extended movement of his symphony-cantata (Symphony #2). You are in for an evening of delightful music, much of it new to Minnesota audiences but all of it marvelous to hear and enjoy! Hopefully, both Mendelssohns will be heard equally in the years ahead! — Philip Brunelle, Artistic Director Page 6

TEXTS SONGS FOR VOICE AND PIANO Fanny Hensel

WALDRUHE (FOREST REST) Fanny Hensel

Sung in German I. Frühling (Spring), op. 7, no. 3 Over the garden through the skies, I hear migratory birds pass, Bringing the smell of spring, Everything is beginning to bloom. I want to rejoice, I want to weep, This must be spring and love! All the wonders reappear, Glistening in the moonlight. And the moon, the stars agree, And the grove murmurs it in a dream, And the nightingales sing: She is yours, she is yours! –Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff

Sung in German May your greeting, the rustling of the leaves, Let my head bow into silent dream, Let dream rock me into deep slumber, Let slumber sink me into death. Hail every breath that fans my cheek! Hail every ray that smiles upon my forehead, Already the silent bliss has melted My entire being into nature. – Fanny Hensel

II. Nachtwanderer (Night Wanderer), op. 7, no. 1 I wander through the silent night, The moon floats with gentle stealth Out of its dark cloud cover, And here and there in the valley, A nightingale awakens, Then all is gray and silent again. O wonderful nightsong, From afar the rushing of a stream, The soft rustling in the dark trees You bewitch my thoughts; My muddled singing here Is only like a call from a dream. –Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff III. Gegenwart (Presence) Everything announces you! When the majestic sun appears, I hope you will soon follow. When you emerge in the garden, You are the rose of roses, The lily of lilies at once. When you rise to dance, All the stars rise With you and around you. Night! And so it is then night! Now you outshine the moon’s Lovely, inviting gleam. You are enticing and lovely, And the flowers, moon and stars Worship only you, my sun. My sun! be also to me The creator of majestic days For you give life and eternity. –Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

NACHTREIGEN (NIGHT WHIRL) Fanny Hensel Sung in German The trees are rustling, sweet scents rise and a tender breeze Surrounds our dreams with a bridal touch. We walk and celebrate in a familiar embrace, We celebrate and sing and our echo carries. Blissful sounds and scents and shimmers, O holy unity—close in on us softly, softly. Hello! Hello! How funny it carries through green and night. Fresh as the air is our thought and happily awake with the Singing bird is man, free of constraints. How it shimmers and laughs. Still! Still! Do not let loud calls disturb the holy celebration, Let us sing and listen, create how nature has created. Quiet, wise, approach the circle, come! Yes, we’re coming, overcome by the holy power of stillness. So stay peacefully connected because God has brought you here. And you shall feel together what each individual has thought. –Wilhelm Hensel HIOB (JOB) Fanny Hensel Sung in German I. Chorus What is mankind that you should exalt them and set your heart on them? That you should visit them daily and test them every moment? II. Arioso Why do you hide your face? Will you rush to torment a windblown leaf and chase after dry chaff? III. Chorus You have granted me life and favor and your care has preserved my spirit, And though these things are hidden in your heart, I rest assured that this is your will. –Words from the Book of Job

INTERMISSION RICHTE MICH, GOTT (JUDGE ME, O GOD), OP. 78, NO. 2 Felix Mendelssohn Sung in German Do me justice, O God, and fight my fight against a faithless people; From the deceitful and impious one rescue me. For you, O God, are my strength. Why do you keep me so far away? Why must I go about in mourning, with the enemy oppressing me? Send forth your light and your fidelity; they shall lead me on And bring me to your holy mountain, to your dwelling place. Then will I go in to the altar of God, the God of my gladness and joy; Then will I give you thanks upon the harp, my God. Why are you so downcast, o my soul? And why do you sigh within me? Hope in God! Then I will again give thanks, In the presence of my savior and my God. –Psalm 43 HEILIG (HOLY), OP. 27 Felix Mendelssohn Sung in German Holy, holy, holy is God, the Lord Sabaoth! Every nation proclaims that glorious praise. Sing Hosanna in the heights. O blest are they that come in God’s holy name. Sing Hosanna in the heights. –from the Ordinary of the Lutheran Mass LOBGESANG (HYMN OF PRAISE) Felix Mendelssohn Sung in English Chorus All life, all breath, all that has life and breath sing to the Lord. Praise the Lord with lute and harp, in joyful song extolling. And let all flesh magnify God’s bountiful glory. All that has life and breath, sing to the Lord. Solo and Treble Chorus Praise thou the Lord, O my spirit, and my inmost soul praise such great loving kindness. Praise thou the Lord, O my spirit, and forget thou not all God’s mercies to us. Recitative and Aria Sing ye praise, all ye redeemed of the Lord, redeemed from the hand of the foe, from your distresses, from deep affliction, who sat in the shadow of death and darkness. All ye that cry in trouble unto the Lord: sing ye praise, give ye thanks, proclaim aloud God’s goodness.

Duet and Chorus I waited for the Lord, who inclined unto me and heard my complaint. O blessed are they that hope and trust in the Lord. Solo Sorrows of death had closed all around me and hell’s dark terror had got hold upon me with trouble and deep heaviness. But, said the Lord: Come, arise from the dead—I bring thee salvation. We called through the darkness: Guardian, will the night soon pass? The guardian only said: Though the morning will come, the night will come also. Return again, ask ye, inquire ye: Guardian, will the night soon pass? Solo The night is departing! Chorus The night is departing, the day is approaching. Therefore, let us cast off the works of darkness, let us gird on the armor of light. Chorale Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom God’s world rejoices. Who, from our parents’ arms has blessed us on our way, with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. All praise and thanks to God Creator now be given, the Son, and Holy Ghost who reign in highest heaven. The one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Duet My song shall be always Thy mercy, singing Thy praise, thou only God. My tongue ever speaks the goodness Thou hast done unto me. I wander in night and foulest darkness and mine enemies stand threatening around me; yet called I upon the name of the Lord, and God redeemed me with watchful goodness. Chorus Ye nations, offer to the Lord glory and might. Ye monarchs, offer to the Lord glory and might. O heaven, offer to the Lord glory and might. All nature, offer to the Lord glory and might. O give thanks to the Lord, praise God all ye people and ever bless that holy name. All that has life and breath sing to the Lord, Hallelujah. Sing to the Lord.

God counteth all your sorrows in the time of need. God comforts the bereaved with kind regard. Sing ye praise. Give ye thanks! Proclaim aloud God’s goodness. Chorus All ye that cried unto the Lord in distress and deep affliction, God counteth all your sorrows in the time of need. 2019-2020 Season

BEHIND THE MUSIC Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn Across the history of Western classical music, rarely do we find two major composers whose journeys toward artistic maturity were as closely intertwined as Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn’s. Born just over three years apart (Fanny on November 14, 1805, Felix on February 3, 1809), they were the oldest of four children born to Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn—the one an affluent banker, the other a woman of wide-ranging cultural attainment—who lavished Peter Mercer-Taylor every conceivable advantage on their offspring. In 1817, Fanny and Felix both began piano lessons with Berlin composer/pianist Ludwig Berger. Both began studies in counterpoint and composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter in 1819, and joined Berlin’s Singakademie in 1820. The family began holding biweekly “Sunday musicales” in 1823, at which Fanny and Felix regularly dazzled guests with their prodigious pianistic skills (both partial to Bach, but performing Beethoven concertos by their late teens). And both composed copiously. Felix was pressed through a systematic regimen in larger forms Fanny explored only occasionally. But where smaller forms went, their styles were so nearly indistinguishable that three of Fanny’s works were included in each of Felix’s first two published sets of songs (Op. 8 and 9, containing twelve songs each), without the slightest fear anyone would know the difference. They were not, however, being prepared for similar destinies. Fanny was 14 when she received from her father a letter reminding her of what might and might not be hoped for: “Music will perhaps become his [Felix’s] profession, whilst for you it can and must only be an ornament… your very joy at the praise he earns proves that you might, in his place, have merited equal approval.” In 1829, Felix left to travel Europe and seek his musical fortune (eventually settling in Leipzig) and Fanny got married, she and her husband—Berlin painter Wilhelm Hensel—taking up quarters in her parents’ home. As she wrote in her diary, “Felix, our soul, is leaving, the second half of my life stands before me.” Thereafter, the two led very different lives. Felix rose rapidly toward widespread recognition as Europe’s most significant composer and conductor. Fanny’s public profile was significant, but more modest. The regular Sunday musicales she ran made the Mendelssohn/Hensel household one of Berlin’s most vibrant musical hubs: her audiences included Prussian royalty, her programs encompassing celebrities from Franz Liszt to Clara Schumann (with Fanny herself an acclaimed regular). Though among the most prolific female composers of the century, Fanny composed only intermittently through her adulthood, entering the domain of publication—without Felix’s encouragement—only in the final year of her life. Yet Fanny and Felix remained close musical confidants, trading reports on their activities, impressions of their musical worlds, and, of course, new compositions. Neither handled the other with kid gloves. After receiving Felix’s lukewarm assessment of one of the three cantatas she composed in 1831, Fanny abandoned the genre for good. And when Felix shared with Fanny early ideas for revisions to his “Italian” Symphony, she was openly disparaging (those revisions went uncompleted, and Felix never published the piece). But encouragement was the norm. And all of their correspondence breathes a spirit of the deepest mutual affection and respect. As their early lives were intertwined, so were their deaths. On May 14, 1847—while rehearsing her brother’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht—Fanny suffered the first of a series of strokes. She died later that night. Felix reportedly screamed and fainted when he heard the news, his already-fragile health entering a final downward spiral. Less than six months later, he too suffered a series of strokes, dying on November 4, 1847. Their lives were too brief, certainly, but each had had time enough to provide to the world a rich bounty of musical work, and, to the other, an abiding source of inspiration, support, and artistic companionship. by Peter Mercer-Taylor, Professor of Musicology at the University of Minnesota, whose scholarship is divided among Felix Mendelssohn, rock-era popular song, and 19th-century American hymnody.

LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT SPOTLIGHT VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! Music can be a tool for self-expression, forming a cultural identity, and building bridges to other cultures. The VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! program delivers the complex, multidimensional value of an arts education directly to area students through a unique program that brings the talents of composers from Mexico directly into Minnesota classrooms. Through VocalEssence ¡Cantaré!, selected composers from Mexico participate as artists-in-residence with elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and community organizations. The composers work directly with student choirs and community choruses throughout the year, becoming familiar with the ensembles and writing new music specifically for each. At the end of the school year, community and school partners present world premieres of new music in concert. Natalia Romero Arbeláez is the choir director at Harding Senior High School in St. Paul. Her students participated in the ¡Cantaré! program in the 2018-2019 school year. “We loved every second of the experience,” she said. “G. Phillip Shoultz and I met when two of my students joined VESOTA, the VocalEssence choir for high school singers, as part of the inaugural group,” said Romero Arbeláez. “He reached out to me about ¡Cantaré! because he felt it might be a good program for my students.... and the composer that year, Pablo Mendoza Halliday, was Colombian—like me!” “The students so loved the chance to work with a living, breathing composer! Pablo came into our classroom and shared so much of his Colombian heritage with students. As a teacher, who had never gotten a chance to work with another Colombian in a professional setting, I was thrilled to have someone from my part of the world.” “As we discussed what kind of music they would like to sing, the students and Pablo sat down to talk about what their values were and the things that were important to them. Pablo later told me that that conversation with Harding students inspired the text for Mi Tierra, the mass choir piece. I appreciated the fact that my students were able to build a relationship with Pablo and grow comfortable with him in the room,” said Romero Arbeláez. “It was so valuable to have a guest artist who came in several days at a time and it really encouraged the students and pushed them to work hard. Parents also enjoyed the Sing’n’Sup event–it featured delicious food and amazing crafts!!” The program culminates in a performance of the new music compositions by the students themselves at the Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul. “The kids loved singing on the Ordway stage,” said Romero Arbeláez. “Students said they felt so proud to be up there representing the school. It truly was an honor.” What does Romero Arbeláez want other educators to know? “¡Cantaré! is one of those experiences you wish you could give all your students because it brings the compositional process to life, includes beautiful manipulatives and resources, and culminates in a concert on the Ordway stage. In the real world, you usually never have the resources to pull it off—something this big requires time, money, and help to bring it to life. The fact that VocalEssence has put together a program with so many dimensions, that is so easy for educators to implement, speaks to an extraordinary level of investment in our community, schools, and students.”

Equally at ease sharing the stage with famous guest artists such as Dessa and Sweet Honey In The Rock and budding young singers from across the metro, the VocalEssence Chorus embodies the tagline Together We Sing. https://www.vocalessence.org/who-we-are/performing-ensembles/vocalessence-chorus/

Minnesota is home to an international choral music gem—the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers. Declared by the Oxford Times (UK) as having “a blend that could— and should—be the envy of every choir in the business,” this 32-voice professional chorus is enjoyed by millions from Duluth, Minnesota to Shanghai, China. The Ensemble Singers are equally at ease premiering music by Pulitzer Prize winning composers as well as teen moms in our Lullaby Project. https://www.vocalessence.org/who-we-are/ performing-ensembles/vocalessenceensemble-singers/
