WELCOME

THE PROGRAM VocalEssence Ensemble Singers Philip Brunelle, conductor Joseph Haj, readings of William Shakespeare A 400th Anniversary Salute to William Shakespeare

Welcome to the opening concert of the VocalEssence 48th season! This afternoon we honor the seasons of life, validate the wisdom of timeless truths, and celebrate the power of community. The concert begins with the 400th anniversary salute to William Shakespeare—a man who has inspired thousands of composers down through the centuries. Adding a special lustre to the music we are pleased to welcome Joseph Haj, Artistic Director of the Guthrie Theater, to share his own spoken words from the great bard. Then, five prominent female composers struck by the creativity of Kay McCarthy’s magnificent quilts were each commissioned to compose an a cappella work based on a poem of their choosing—a poem that spoke to each of them about the quilt they chose. How delightful to bring together the worlds of music, poetry, and fiber art for us to enjoy! Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage provides the afternoon’s title and brings singers of all ages together to highlight and combat loneliness and other difficulties we all face as we journey through life. This afternoon, the VocalEssence Chorus is joined by members of our very own Sabathani Vintage Voices choir, and our friends from the Minneapolis Youth Chorus and the Voices of Experience, led by Patrice Arasim and Jerry Rubino, respectively. The texts of the poet Charles Bennett provide the framework for this adventure, guiding us to revisit our personal memories and challenging us to share our hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. We are honored to be presenting the North American premiere of this stunning work. — Philip Brunelle, Artistic Director and G. TEXTS Texts of William Shakespeare SO HALLOW’D IS THE TIME (HAMLET) Stephen Paulus Some say, that ever ‘gainst that season comes Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long; And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad, The nights are wholesome, then no planets strike, No fairy takes, nor witch hath pow’r to charm, So hallow’d and so gracious is the time.

BLOW, BLOW THOU WINTER WIND (AS YOU LIKE IT) Thomas Arne Blow, blow, thou winter wind, Thou art not so unkind As man’s ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky, That dost not bite so nigh As benefits forgot: Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As friend remembered not. SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO A SUMMER’S DAY? (SONNET XVIII) Libby Larsen Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date; Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. DIRGE FOR FIDELE (CYMBELINE) Ralph Vaughan Williams Fear no more the heat o’ the sun Nor the furious winter’s rages Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta’en thy wages; Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

Page 6

2016-2017 Season

Fear no more the lightning-flash, Nor the all-dreaded thunder-stone; Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finished joy and moan; All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee, and come to dust. No exorciser harm thee! Nor no witchcraft charm thee! Ghost unlaid forbear thee! Nothing ill come near thee! Quiet consummation have; And renownèd by thy grave! DEVOURING TIME (SONNET XIX) Josep Vila Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion’s paws, And make the earth devour her own sweet brood; Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger’s jaws, And burn the long-liv’d Phoenix in her blood; Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets, And do whate’er thou wilt, swift-footed Time, To the wide world and all her fading sweets; But I forbid thee one more heinous crime: O, carve not with the hours my love’s fair brow, Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen! Him in thy course untainted do allow For beauty’s pattern to succeeding men. Yet do thy worst, old Time! Despite thy wrong My love shall in my verse ever live young. COME AWAY, DEATH (TWELFTH NIGHT) Jaakko Mäntyjärvi Come away, come away, death, And in sad cypress let me be laid. Fly away, fly away, breath; I am slain by a fair cruel maid. My shroud of white, stuck all with yew, O, prepare it! My part of death, no one so true Did share it. Not a flower, not a flower sweet, On my black coffin let there be strown. Not a friend, not a friend greet My poor corpse, where my bones shall be thrown. A thousand thousand sighs to save, Lay me, O, where Sad true lover never find my grave, To weep there!

IT WAS A LOVER AND HIS LASS (AS YOU LIKE IT) John Rutter It was a lover and his lass, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, That o’er the green cornfield did pass, In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring. Between the acres of the rye, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, Those pretty country folks would lie, In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring. And therefore take the present time, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, For love is crownèd with the prime In springtime, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring. QUILT SONGS TEXTS - See Insert OUT BEYOND IDEAS (I’LL MEET YOU THERE) Catherine Dalton We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase each other doesn’t make any sense Arthur O’Shaughnessy; Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks THE VOYAGE Bob Chilcott The poet Charles Bennett and I wrote The Voyage in response to a request from Age UK Oxfordshire to imagine a piece that might support their ongoing campaign to end loneliness. A highly emotive subject, and one that we decided to set within the span of a voyage at sea, which ultimately depicts the voyage through life and how we come to terms with the challenges it brings. The major protagonists are three choirs, a mixed choir responsible for the major part of the narrative, a choir of young people, and a community choir of older people made up largely of inexperienced singers. We looked to depict this journey through a cycle of songs which are interspersed by short soliloquies for the instrumentalists. A good deal of the text views a life lived through memories and I looked to reflect this for the community choir in music made up of tuneful refrains, sung both wordless and with text, refrains that I wanted to feel like songs known for a long time or even from youth. These refrains punctuate the narrative which takes us through childhood memories, the hopes and dreams, and the storms of Page 8

2016-2017 Season

life to a sense of resolution through shared experience. The focal point for this resolution is in the song “Cup and Saucer,” sung by the young and the older choirs. It aims to show us that even with the passing of time our feelings, our hopes and most importantly our needs for others remain the same. 1: Setting Sail Alone on the beach at midnight I found a boat, and wondered what it might take to make it float. In the waves at my feet I could open a door, and cross the sea to where I’d never been before. The beat of my heart was a tide which rose up the beach, and the moon was the pulse of the lighthouse just out of reach. In the boat with my blood for the mast and sail, my hand the rudder, my spine the wooden keel. The stars above my head became an arrow pointing me out from the beach towards tomorrow. And I knew I would sail that boat towards the light, to where I wasn’t alone on the beach at midnight. 2:

My Father’s Boat

Now and again I remember the boats we made together, my father and me. I recall the smell of glue and all the pieces laid out on the table. Chorus:

Dip your brush and begin with aquamarine for the sea, then paint the sky with night and come and sail with me.

We put them together slowly like steps in a dance we found it hard to learn. We read the instructions so often I heard them as I went to sleep. And all I’m asking now is a bit of help to put myself together. I know it won’t be easy, but if we take things gently we’ll be fine. All the instructions are gone now and some of the pieces missing but even so,

I think I can still dance over the dark waves with you as my partner. 3: What we did on our holiday

Sometimes at night I felt the floor heave up. I crouched into a ball, I shuddered as we broke through stubborn ice; I thought the house might sink but it never did.

What we did on our holiday was sit on a bench as the sun melted ice cream down our fingers.

And so when a storm approaches now, I batten down the hatches, except it’s me who steers the house through rain and wind and ice towards the morning.

And what we did on our holiday was fly a kite that grew smaller till it hit a cloud.

Stick with me now, we’ll get through this together, listen to the shipping forecast, pick up the broken pieces and start afresh. Remember, it’s all plain sailing after a storm.

And what we did on our holiday was build a castle whose walls would never fall till the tide came in.

6:

And what we did on our holiday was splash each other with water tasting like tears till a towel came along. We fell asleep to the sound of waves in our heads, we dreamt of an ice-cream castle, and that’s what we did on our holiday. 4:

Crossing the Equator

The day you cross the equator for the first time you’re summoned to the Court of Neptune – a series of strange tasks awaits before you become a Shellback or ‘Son of the Deep’. And whenever I get to the top of the stair and forget what I’m there for, when I lose my keys or become confused, I tell myself: I’m only crossing the equator. And when I lost my step and fell overboard and saw my life go sailing off without me, I knew in the end it was either sink or swim. King Neptune remember me now your trusty servant, throw me a lifeline soon O Merciful Majesty, save me from sharks and crabs and the storms of life. 5:

The Shipping Forecast

Chorus:

Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, steer me safely through the night. Gale Force Nine and Storm Force Ten, let me see dry land again.

As a child I always knew when a storm was coming. I hid myself away, and watched the cups and saucers flying; plates come smashing down in smithereens.

The Fortunate Isles

I’ve been to the Fortunate Isles, and what I remember most, is a curious thing which takes place once a year. In clothes that do not fit, clothes that are most unsuitable, old people go to the playgrounds and take them over. Like swallows they swing through the air, and spin on roundabouts, or slip down sleek slides with a gleeful shriek. But then a terrible thing, a terrible thing happened: the old went right on playing and would not stop. And as they laughed and played, their bodies grew small as children, and no one could make them do what they were told. Their children watched them play, children who looked like adults, and told them: be careful and stop it and don’t touch that! I’ve been to the Fortunate Isles where the old are young forever and laughter is bright as sunshine after rain. 7: Cup and Saucer Whenever I’m a saucer you’re my cup. Whenever you are down I’ll lift you up. If I’m a blunted knife you’ll be my fork. If you were an empty sky I’d be the lark. When I’m a dark tunnel you’re the light. When you’ve been left behind I’ll see you right. 2016-2017 Season

BIOGRAPHIES If ever I’m too cold you keep me warm. If ever you are stormy I’ll be calm. 8: Sailing By Chorus: This is a prayer for space. This is a prayer for ease. This is a prayer for grace. This is a prayer for peace. In a time of calm we rest upon the waves and take our ease, one white cloud in a blue sky is a seagull sailing by. In a time of calm we watch the moonlight gleam on a millpond sea, hear the desolate cry of a seagull sailing by. In a time of calm we wait for the wind to blow both hard and cold, then over the waves we fly like a seagull sailing by. 9: Boatsong I am the mast: a tree among the waves, I hold the sail where once I held my leaves. O mast we promise now we’ll stand like you – tall and straight and true. I am the compass: look at me and know the true direction you must surely go. O compass we promise now to hold on tight to all that’s true and right. This is the ship to hold us safe and dry above the waves, beneath the open sky. O ship our promise meets in you tonight as we voyage towards the light. Charles Bennett The Voyage music by Bob Chilcott, words by Charles Bennett. Text © Charles Bennett. Charles Bennett’s writing is widely acclaimed. Evenlode, his ninth collection of poetry, cements his reputation as a writer concerned with place. Celebrated in the 2012 BBC Proms (and featured on the recent double CD Angry Planet) his work with choral composer Bob Chilcott has seen him hailed as a memorable and mesmerising librettist. He is writer-inresidence for the National Trust at Wicken Fen and combines this with his duties as Associate Professor in Poetry at the University of Northampton. Brimming over with startling voices, arresting images and an indefatigable joie de vivre. Poetry Book Society Bob Chilcott (b. 1955), has become one of the most widely performed composers of choral music in the world. His music reflects his wide taste in music styles and his commitment to writing music that is both singable and communicative. Most recently he wrote The King shall rejoice for the service at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. There are recordings of Bob’s music by the BBC Singers, the King’s Singers, The Sirens, and the NFL Wrocław Philharmonic Choir. Since 2002 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of The BBC Singers. He has been privileged to conduct many choirs in some 30 countries over the last ten years. Joseph Haj (b. 1964) is the eighth artistic director of the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis. He is the former artistic director of PlayMakers Repertory Company, the theater in residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Joseph has directed at theaters throughout the United States and began his career as an actor, performing with many of the American theater’s foremost directors. He made his Guthrie debut in The Screens and performed in The Skin of Our Teeth, Troilus & Cressida, Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V. Joseph was the recipient of the NEA/White House Council Millennium Grant awarded to 50 of America’s finest artists.

Minneapolis Youth Chorus

Sabathani Vintage Voices

Voices of Experience

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Minneapolis Youth Chorus is an auditioned ensemble open to Minneapolis Public School students in grades 5 through 9. Minneapolis Youth Chorus seeks to enrich the lives of participants by providing them with opportunities to develop their musical gifts in an environment dedicated to the celebration of diversity and the pursuit of artistic excellence. Led by founding conductor Patrice Arasim, the program is offered at no charge to participants: all costs are borne by its parent organization, the Minnesota Chorale. Minneapolis Youth Chorus is a Community Partner of the Minneapolis Public Schools, and a founding member of the Minnesota Youth Choir Consortium.

Sabathani Vintage Voices began in 2015 as a part of the VocalEssence Vintage Voices program. The choir is conducted by VocalEssence Ensemble Singer and Education Manager Robert Graham. It is based at the Sabathani Senior Center in Minneapolis which is the hub for many programs geared toward those 50 and better, including wellness care opportunities, informative seminars on current topics or events, entertaining field trips to a theater, casino, or museum, as well as a friendly gathering place where seniors can meet friends and neighbors. The many activities and services are designed to help seniors maintain independent lifestyles.

Voices of Experience offers an opportunity for mature singers to achieve vocal excellence, to share their art with others, and to enrich the community through song. Offered in partnership with the Minnesota Chorale and MacPhail Center for Music, Voices of Experience is an artistically ambitious chorus of Twin Cities seniors, ages 55 and older. Jerry Rubino, conductor, pianist and arranger, leads the ensemble.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Did you know that isolation and loneliness for older adults is a critical issue? The health risks associated with social isolation are equivalent to smoking a pack of 20 cigarettes each day! VocalEssence is combatting this with VocalEssence Vintage Voices. Created using best practices, the program’s interactive, ongoing approach aims to elicit proven health benefits of creative arts. It includes: •

Rehearsals: Weekly rehearsals over 12 weeks focus on the process of singing together, incorporate sensory-rich activities, social and reflection time, and are led by a professional conductor and pianist trained to work with older adults.

VocalEssence Concert Attendance: Choir participants are invited to attend a VocalEssence concert with a guest.

Final Performance: Vintage Voices singers perform for their family, friends, and the site community at a sharing concert.

Please welcome our fall VocalEssence Vintage Voices sites—Presbyterian Homes and Services at Folkstone and Augustana Open Circle of Hopkins—at The Voyage performance this fall. “My memory is improving! Since I’ve been coming here and singing with you every week, I feel like it’s the first time that I don’t have to check my calendar to see what day of the week it is!”

TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS STAR IN THE EAST Malcolm Dalglish

LITTLE CAROL OF HOPE Steve Heitzeg

Hail the dawn! See the great mediator. Down from the regions of glory descend. Shepherds go look for the babe in the manger. Follow the star where the angels attend.

When Jesus came to earth it was a holy birth the animals sang His worth, singing balelu

Cold on his cradle the dew drops are shining. Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall. Angels surround him in slumber reclining. While high in the heavens is a lone sentinel.

And Jesus said be kind to all those you will find and keep an open mind, singing friend to all

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning. Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid. Star of the east, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant redeemer is laid.

Love each and ev’ry thing this love will make earth sing no war could ever bring such love

Shall we not yield him in costly devotion. Odors of Edom and off’rings sublime. Gems from the mountains and pearls of the ocean. Myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine.

Remember those in need and put away all greed the hungry we must feed, singing help the poor, love not war

Vainly we offer each ample oblation. Vainly with gifts would his favor secure. Richer by far is the hearts adoration. Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

When Jesus died they say Sweet Mary came to pray all spirits fly away, singing weep no more

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning. Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid. Star of the east, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant redeemer is laid.

The message Jesus brings is love above all things and justice now rings across all lands

Peace to all. Steve Heitzeg

There’s a star in the east on Christmas morn. Rise up shepherd and follow. It’ll lead to the spot where the Savior’s born. Rise up shepherd and follow! Leave your sheep and leave your lambs Rise up shepherd and follow. Leave your yews and leave your rams. Rise up shepherd and follow. If you pay good heed to the angel’s word. Rise up shepherd and follow. You’ll forget your flock, you’ll forget your herd. Rise up shepherd and follow. Follow. Follow. Rise up shepherd and follow. Follow the star of Bethlehem. Rise up shepherd and follow.

THE SHEPHERD AND THE KING Brian Holmes

THE CAROL OF THE BIRDS Alice Parker

The Shepherd and the King, The Angel and the Ass, They heard Sweet Mary sing When her joy was come to pass; They heard Sweet Mary sing To the Baby on her knee. Sing again, Sweet Mary, And we will sing with thee! Earth, bear a berry! Heaven bear a light! Man, make you merry On Christmas Night.

When in the eastern skies The wondrous star did rise And fill the night with splendor, Came birds in joyful throng To sound their dainty song In a carol sweet and tender, Hosanna to the Child And to his Mother mild Full rev’rently to render. The kingly eagle came To praise His holy name In mighty proclamation;

The Oxen in the stall, The Sheep upon the hill, They are waking all To hear Sweet Mary still. The Baby is a Child And the Child is running free. Sing again, Sweet Mary …

The sparrow then replied: “Tonight is Christmastide, Ah, night of jubilation.” Then robin red-breast sang: “Now death has lost its pang; In Christ is our salvation.”

The People in the land, So many million strong, All silently do stand To hear Sweet Mary’s song. The Child He is a man, And the Man hangs on a tree. Sing again, Sweet Mary …

The nightingale sang sweet The Holy Babe to greet In Mary’s arms a-lying. The cuckoo and the quail Flew over hill and dale In admiration vying.

The Stars that are so old, The Grass that is so young, They listen in the cold To hear Sweet Mary’s tongue. The Man’s the Son of God, And in heaven walketh He. Sing again, Sweet Mary … Eleanor Farjeon

The barn-owl’s eyes were dim, Such radiance blinded him, And homeward he went flying. Traditional Spanish, Translation by Kurt Schindler and Deems Taylor

ADAM LAY YBOUNDEN Sean Sweeden

THE THREE KINGS Healey Willan

One of the earliest carols I remember singing as a young chorister is Adam Lay Ybounden. I have always been fascinated by its poetic beauty. In my composition I have tried to enhance the mystery, warmth, and joy evoked by the Middle English text. In this carol we remember the Garden of Eden and the fall of Adam and Eve. The third verse suggests our subsequent redemption by the birth of Jesus Christ by Mary, who was to become the Queen of Heaven as a result. The text becomes macaronic as we are called to sing “Deo Gratias”! —Sean Sweeden

“Who knocks tonight so late?” The weary porter said. Three Kings stood at the gate, Each with a crown on his head.

Adam lay ybounden, bounden in a bond; four thousand winter, thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, an apple that he took. As clerkès finden, written in their book.

The serving man bowed down; The inn was full, he knew. Said he, “In all this town Is no fit place for you!” A light the manger lit; There lay the Mother meek. Said they, “This place is fit: Here is the rest we seek!” They loosed their latchet strings; So stood they all unshod. Come in, come in, ye Kings! And kiss the Feet of God. Laurence Housman

Ne had the apple taken been, the apple taken been, ne had never our ladie a been heav’ne queen. Blessed be the time that apple taken was, therefore we moun singen, Deo gratias! Traditional English

CAROLS AND LULLABIES Conrad Susa Many years ago, Philip Brunelle suggested that I write a companion to Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. To a composer, this tempting offer was another way of asking, “How about writing us a hit?” After several years of me writhing in doubt, a friend, Gary Holt, showed me a set of traditional Spanish carols he had sung as a boy in Arizona. I noted their many connections with Renaissance music along with their homey yet artful simplicity. Excited, I juggled them around to form a narrative. The overriding image of a Southwestern piñata party for the New Baby led me to add guitar and marimba to Britten’s harp and compose connective music in a totally new conception of the carols. In an often overlooked detail of the Christmas story, the New Baby bawls loudly as the shepherds leave the stable—you may hear him in your mind as the final bars of “Chiquirriquitín.” His parents now must dandle and soothe him to sleep. Tired themselves, they drift off as the angels hover above them in protective adoration. —Conrad Susa I.

¡Oh, mi Belén! (Biscayan) ¡Oh, mi Belén! Llegó tu hora bien amada, La luz que irradias sin cesar Es como un faro que nos guía En nuestra ruta, noche y día.

Oh, my Bethlehem! Your beloved hour has arrived! The light you shine unceasingly Like a beacon that guides us On our way, night and day.

¡Oh, mi Belén!

Oh, my Bethlehem!

A CRADLE SONG Lee Blaske

REEL À BOUCHE Malcolm Dalglish

William Blake’s poem, A Cradle Song, was written in 1789 and included in his book Songs of Innocence. I attempted to give it a somewhat contemporary treatment in this composition. Knowing that my old friend, Dave Hagedorn, was going to be the vibraphone accompanist for this year’s contest assignment, I wanted to make sure there would be moments where the vibraphone would shine. So, I built in cascades at the ends of a number of phrases underneath sustained chords held by the choir. —Lee Blaske

A “reel” is a fast moving repetitive dance tune in a duple meter, found in many western music folk traditions. Reel à Bouche is a French-Canadian lilting/ or mouth music piece. Traditionally performed for dances when the instrumentalists, fiddler, or accordion player were either unavailable, unaffordable or taking a break. This type of mouth music will often imitate the absent instrument and be accompanied by a clogging step, using a heel-toe pattern that is done either standing or sitting. A wonderful piece for a Christmas celebration.

Sweet dreams, form a shade O’er my lovely infant’s head! Sweet dreams of pleasant streams, By happy, silent, moony beams!

THOU SHALT KNOW HIM Mark Sirett

Sweet Sleep, with soft down, Weave thy brows an infant crown! Sweet Sleep, angel mild, Hover o’er my happy child! Sweet smiles, in the night, Hover over my delight! Sweet smiles, mother’s smiles, All the livelong night beguiles.

Thou shalt know him when he comes, Not by any din of drums, Nor his manners, nor his airs, Nor by any thing he wears. Thou shalt know him when he comes, Not by his crown or by his gown, But his coming known shall be, By the holy harmony which his coming makes in thee. Anonymous Text

Sweet moans, dovelike sighs, Chase not slumber from thy eyes! Sweet moans, sweeter smiles, All the dovelike moans beguiles. Sleep, sleep, happy child! All creation slept and smiled. Sleep, sleep, happy sleep, While over thee thy mother weep. Sweet babe, in thy face, Holy image I can trace; Sweet babe, once like thee, Thy Maker lay, and wept for me. Wept for me, for thee, for all, When he was an infant small. Thou His image ever see, Heavenly face that smiles on thee! Smiles on thee, on me, on all, Who became an infant small; Infant smiles are His own smiles; Heaven and earth to peace beguiles. William Blake

THE FIRST NOWELL French carol, arr. Philip Brunelle

O HOLY NIGHT Adolphe Adam

The First Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They lookèd up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Refrain And by the light of that same star, Three Wise Men came from country far, To seek a king was their intent, And to follow the star wheresoever it went: Refrain This star drew nigh to the northwest; O’er Bethlehem it took its rest. And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay: Refrain Then did they know assuredly Within that house the King did lie: One entered in them for to see, And found the babe in poverty: Refrain Then entered in those Wise Men three, Full reverently upon their knee And offered there in his presence Their gold and myrrh and frankincense: Refrain Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of nought, And with his death true life hath bought: Refrain Traditional

Refrain Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices. O night divine, O night when Christ was born. O night divine, O night divine. Truly He taught us to love one another His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name. Refrain Traditional WHAT MONTH WAS JESUS BORN IN? David Morrow What month was Jesus born in? Last month in the year. Lord, you got January, February, March, oh Lord! You got April, May, and June, Lord, You got July, August, September, October and a-November? It was the twenty-fifth day of December, The last month in the year. He was born in an ox-stall manger, Last month in the year. Was it January, February, March, oh Lord? Was it April, May, or June, Lord, Was it July, August, September, October and a-November? It was the twenty-fifth day of December, It was the last month in the year. I’m talkin’ ‘bout Mary’s baby, Born in the last month in the year. Was it January, February, March, oh Lord! You got April, May, and June, Lord, Was it July, August, September, October and a-November? It was the twenty-fifth day of December, It was the last month, yes, In the last month in the year. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project Presented by VocalEssence In partnership with Carnegie Hall, VocalEssence is thrilled to be the first choir in the nation to offer the Lullaby Project, a program that creates musical experiences for women facing pregnancy while enduring other hardships, such as teenage pregnancy, homelessness, or incarceration. Lullabies are powerful tools for parents. According to research, the experience of writing a lullaby promotes bonding with the baby (a key predictor in the future success of children), boosts development and attachment by encouraging moms to communicate with their children, and builds parents’ confidence by generating a sense of accomplishment in creating a song for their baby. This season, VocalEssence is pairing African American teen moms at Longfellow Alternative High School in Minneapolis with VocalEssence WITNESS guest artist Melanie DeMore. Together they will each create a lullaby that embodies the hopes and dreams the mother has for her baby. The lullabies will be recorded, and performed for friends and family this winter.

ABOUT VOCALESSENCE The Mission of VocalEssence As a leading Minnesota arts organization, VocalEssence uses the power of choral music to enhance our community by producing innovative vocal music events that stir people’s souls. Minneapolis-based VocalEssence has decades of history as one of the world’s premier choral music organizations. Despite its global influence, VocalEssence has kept its focus local—consistently pioneering ways to strengthen Minnesota’s community through thrilling musical experiences. We engage people of all ages and cultures through innovative, enticing choral music programming, such as performing ensembles, school curricula, elder learning initiatives, and advocacy projects. Called “one of the irreplaceable music ensembles of our time” by Dana Gioia, past chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, our two performing groups—the Ensemble Singers (32 professionals) and the VocalEssence Chorus (115 volunteers)— are made up entirely of local residents. VocalEssence is renowned for its innovative exploration of music for voices and instruments under the enthusiastic direction of Artistic Director and Founder Philip Brunelle and Associate Conductor and Education Program Director G. Phillip Shoultz, III. Each season, VocalEssence presents an eclectic series of concerts featuring the VocalEssence Chorus & Ensemble Singers and an array of guest soloists and instrumentalists. VocalEssence was founded in 1969 as the Plymouth Music Series, an arts outreach program of Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis and incorporated as a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1979. In 2002, the Plymouth Music Series changed its name to VocalEssence, capturing the essence of its mission to explore music for the human voice. In addition to championing lesser-known works of the past, VocalEssence has an unwavering commitment to today’s composers, which has resulted in more than 250 world premieres to date. The organization has received the ASCAP/ Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music six times and has been honored with more Page 34

2016-2017 Season

Chorus America awards than any other ensemble nationwide, including the once-in-an-organizational-lifetime Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. VocalEssence reaches into the community with programs that impact thousands of students, singers, and composers every year. VocalEssence WITNESS celebrates the contributions of African Americans and ¡Cantaré! brings the talents of composers from Mexico into Minnesota classrooms. VocalEssence partners with the American Composers Forum to offer the annual Welcome Christmas Carol Contest. At VocalEssence, we believe when we sing together, we succeed together. We invite you to be a part of it.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT Lois Quam Supports VocalEssence in Creating Harmony in Community and On Stage Lois Quam had been an occasional VocalEssence concertgoer, but after getting to know founder and artistic director Philip Brunelle in 2007, she found herself drawn deeper into the organization. “Philip’s enthusiasm is infectious. I turned to him for advice when I was hosting a series of concerts at my house, and he helped me put together some really creative evenings. I remember him sitting in my living room saying, ‘Let’s not just do the usual Beethoven.’ At one of my concerts, we sang a Lutheran hymn to its original tune, a German drinking song! Another time, we had a soprano interpret paintings by Minnesota artists,” said Quam, who shaped healthcare in Minnesota as a United Health executive, worked for Hillary Clinton at the White House and the State Department, and served as chief operating officer of the Nature Conservancy.

A lifelong “source of beauty”

“VocalEssence is so inspirational: music has a way to empower us, bring us together, and help us see new possibilities. In VocalEssence, I saw a way to make a community come alive. We need that now more than ever.”

“Called to a higher purpose”

Lois particularly treasures her experience at the 2013 VocalEssence WITNESS performance honoring pioneering African-American contralto Marian Anderson. “That concert was a really special event,” remembers Lois. “I grew up hearing my mother talk about attending a Marian Anderson concert in Minnesota in the ’40s, and what an uplifting experience that was for her as a girl. So of course, I had to take my parents. It was a beautiful evening, unique, and so moving. At one point Philip asked all the people who’d been lucky enough to hear Marian Anderson sing in person stand up, and my mom stood beaming.”

Although she herself isn’t a singer, Lois has both familial and artistic appreciation for the choral arts. “My mother was a singer in the St. Olaf College Choir, and growing up, we listened to both classical and choral music. I just loved it.” Having spent her own life uniting people to solve problems in a way that advances social good, she respects the unifying capacity of choral music. “I enjoy music as a way to bring a community together…. and to experience the feelings of deep beauty art creates within us as individuals.” It’s a value the Quam family has passed down for three generations—her son Will is musical and interned with Philip at VocalEssence. When asked about the VocalEssence endeavors she finds most inspiring, Lois points to the in-school residencies provided by programs like VocalEssence WITNESS and ¡Cantaré! “Bringing in composers and conductors to work with school choirs provides an amazing opportunity for students. This is work that changes lives, and I’m very enthusiastic to play a part in it.” In VocalEssence, Lois found an organization that supports both personal creativity and human unity. “This is a group that shows why choral music is special. It gives voice to a community and calls us to a higher purpose. It’s a Minnesota—and a national—treasure. And right now, when there’s so much disharmony in the world, we need the kind of harmony that VocalEssence brings.”
