MESSAGE FROM STN CDR
MESSAGE FROM STN CDR
EDITOR’S FOREWORD
April already; 2022 seems to be flying by! Such a lot has happened in the World and at Brize in the first few months of this year and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be getting any quieter.
Daffodils, tulips, lambs and chocolate eggs, spring is here at last!
F
W
ew expected the Russian invasion of Ukraine which is playing out daily on our TV screens. Defence is playing a central role in the UK’s response to the invasion and military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine has been despatched from RAF Brize Norton using our platforms. The workload has certainly increased to support this tasking and the airfield is busy day and night. As ever, our people have risen to the challenge and not just in delivering military taskings. Personnel supported local efforts to collect and dispatch donations to Ukraine, working with the community in Carterton. A big thank you from me to those who contributed, I am always proud to see how our Whole Force is willing to go the extra mile, no matter how hard they are working on camp. And the current operational tempo hasn’t meant a drop in other activities. A400M ATLAS development continues apace with Basic Airdrop capabilities growing and support to exercises. As ever, there have been sporting exploits aplenty from charity Ultra-runs to outstanding cross-country results and most recently a brilliant 24-hour rugby pass event organised by 7 RAF Police Squadron for mental health charities (I enjoyed the cake on sale as well as throwing a few passes!).
As spring merges into summer, the changing seasons bring other changes. The Air Mobility Force Commander is retiring from the Service and was provided with a wonderful, traditional Dining-out send-off at the end of March. With an impressive 34 years’ service under his belt, he will be missed by us all and we wish him well as he departs. And he’s in good company with Wg Cdr Graham Banks (4626 Sqn), Sqn Ldr Si Rushton (ADW ) and Sqn Ldr Andy Marshall (501 Sqn) also being dined out after many decades of service (46 in Graham’s case!). It was an honour to be present to say farewell to those who have given such long and distinguished service to the RAF and the Air Mobility Force. With the Station and all who work here as busy as ever, we can be proud of what we have achieved in the last few months. Easter will see many of our team on some well-deserved leave, please take some if you can and come back refreshed for the summer months.
DEADLINE PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ARTICLES BY 12TH MAY 2022 Your article should aim to be between 300500 words in length, with a high resolution picture over 1MB for every 100 words you write. You should ensure that personnel/activities in photos are named and that you provide the

elcome to the latest edition of 51 Degrees North. Once again you will find this bumper edition full of interesting stories, giving you an insight into the working lives of all those who work at RAF Brize Norton. As we look ahead, preparations are under way to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a celebration of the outstanding commitment Her Majesty has made over 70 years. I am sure that many of us will attend celebrations across the county, please do send us your images that we can share. Our very own RAF Falcons have returned from their winter training and are now conducting UK training ahead of their 2022 season; keep your eyes to the skies and you may just catch a glimpse of the team over Oxfordshire. The Station’s sporting athletes have had fantastic successes which you can read about in this edition. We are also delighted to announce a significant milestone in the delivery of the first A400M Basic Airdrop Course to frontline RAF Crews. Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and it has been heart-warming to see the whole community come together, from schools, councils, parishes and personnel, both civilian and military from RAF Brize Norton with offers of support. Until next time Anita – MCO Editor 51 Degrees North 5

UKRAINE DONATIONS
NEWS
Station personnel supported by the Council collect vital supplies and raise money for Ukraine.
A
Station-led initiative supported by West Oxfordshire District Council saw personnel from across the Station volunteering to sort and box the generous donations collected from the local community. Over the course of just 10 days the volunteers helped sort through thousands of donated items, putting them into more than 2,000 boxes of aid; in the region of 40 tonnes of supplies. All of these were loaded into an HGV for delivery by road to areas in Ukraine in greatest need. Working with 50+ local schools, a project called ‘Day For Ukraine’ was created in which students wore blue and yellow and participated in fundraising events such as cake sales and fun runs. The current fundraising total stands at an incredible £24,000 and this has been sent straight to the British Red Cross DEC Appeal for Ukraine.
BRIZE NORTON ISSUE 2 2022
FS Ali Hedworth, Project Lead, said: “First and foremost, I would like to say a huge well done and thank you to all who volunteered! The last few weeks has been an exceptional busy and challenging time for all of us and I would like to personally thank those who helped, for the effort put in throughout the aid collections. It was an extremely busy and tiring task down at the Aid Drop-Off Zone and required a lot of effort to make it work out well. The persistence and effort by all really did pay off and the overall amount of collections has been frankly staggering.” Council leader Michele Mead said: “Many of the people affected by the conflict in Ukraine have fled their homes with a single suitcase. In response to the crisis, and to assist those seeking refuge, we have made space available to store crucial supplies.”

RF 30 Implementation Leaders Reserve Forces 30 Implementation Leaders Visit Brize.
O
n 22 Mar 22, the Reserve Squadrons at RAF Brize Norton hosted Mr A Dottridge and Brig H Robertson, team leaders for the Reserve Forces 30 Implementation Team. The visit included briefs from all the Reserve Squadron Commanders, and a visit to an aircraft which included displays by different professions. Air Vice Marshal Ranald Munro, Royal Auxiliary Air Force Commandant General, was the main host for the visit. The aim was to inform both the VIPs of the role of the Reserves based at RAF Brize Norton and also emphasise our thoughts about the RF 30 Implementation Plan. The visit was a success and Mr Dottridge was suitably impressed with the visit and the chance to meet the reservists who, he noted, are such motivated and enthusiastic individuals. Mr Dottridge said: “The visit was extremely informative and I was definitely leaving RAF Brize Norton better educated about theRAuxAF. I was taken aback with the excitement of such enthusiastic individuals and how much they thoroughly enjoyed their operational roles.”

A400M Basic Airdrop Course
NEWS
XXIV Squadron delivers first A400M Basic Airdrop Course to frontline crews.
T
hree A400M pilots and two Air Loadmasters of LXX and 30 Squadrons are now qualified to conduct Container Delivery System and Light Stores Airdrop tasking, delivering these whilst flying at low level having completed the new Basic Airdrop Course. The course was put together by XXIV Squadron, the Air Mobility Force Operational Conversion Unit, following a series of capability handovers from 206 Squadron throughout 2021. With the final piece of the jigsaw arriving on the front line in September, XXIV squadron were able to rapidly put together a course that draws heavily on synthetic training to minimise the dependence on the live A400M fleet which is heavily engaged on Strategic Air Transport operations globally. Eight synthetic sorties for each crew are followed by 4 live flights; these are predominantly centred around the Loadmasters who work closely with 47 Air Despatch Squadron teams to safely dispense live loads onto active Drop Zones. The synthetic elements mean that the pilots can receive highly realistic scenario-based training which ensures
that this new capability is employable in many different situations including Humanitarian Aid, Disaster Relief Operations and crisis response. Basic Airdrop Course 1 was completed earlier this week and was delivered
after Course 0 which spanned November and December last year, road testing the course whilst simultaneously generating sufficient instructors to deliver training in this new discipline to multiple crews throughout 2022.
OC XXIV Squadron, Wg Cdr Andrew Mcintyre, said: “The journey to this point has been fraught with challenges with the A400M being so busy, but to deliver the first Airdrop crews to 30 and LXX Squadrons represents a significant milestone in our new tactical Air Transport capability and is hugely rewarding. We owe a huge debt to 206 Squadron and all of the Enablers and supporting teams within the A400M Enterprise for coming together to move the programme forward.”
OC 30 Squadron, Wg Cdr Stuart Patton, said: “Airdrop is an integral part of tactical air mobility. It enhances our ability to sustain remote forces and is another vital string to our bow in times of humanitarian need. I am therefore delighted to see the roll out of this capability to front line crews as we continue, at pace, to drive forward the operational capabilities of Atlas.” BRIZE NORTON ISSUE 2 2022

Air Mobility Force Command Handover Air Commodore Lyle takes Command of the Air Mobility Force.
O
n 31st March 2022, Air Commodore David Manning officially handed over the role of Air Mobility Force
Commander to Air Commodore Anthony Lyle. Air Commodore Lyle said: “I am hugely proud and excited to be taking over as Air Mobility
Force Commander and grateful to Air Commodore Manning for having done so much over the last 18 months to lead and develop the Force.
“I join the Force at an interesting time; following the activity to recover personnel from Afghanistan under Op PITTING and the current activity to provide critical logistical support to Ukraine and NATO. It has been a busy few years for the RAF and the Air Mobility Force in particular. I doubt that the operational demand will reduce in the short term, and successful delivery on operations must remain our priority; however, we must also look to the future. The coming year will see the further development of capability onto the Atlas and C-17, setting the conditions for the retirement of the Hercules in 2023. In addition, 32 (The Royal) Squadron at RAF Northolt will commence operating the Falcon 900, replacing the BAe 146 in the crucial Command Support Air Transport and VIP transport role.” “I look forward to working with the Stations, Squadrons and Wings that deliver in support of the Air Mobility enterprise. Most of all, I look forward to meeting the people that comprise the Force, from the regular and reserve service personnel, through to our excellent civil servants and the contractors. We all know there are challenges ahead, but there are also exciting opportunities to collectively drive forward Air Mobility enterprise.”

RAF Atlas Resupplies UK Troops in Estonia
NEWS
A Royal Air Force Atlas aircraft completed a 9-hour round trip mission from the UK to air drop supplies in support of a UK Army training Exercise in Estonia.

aunching from the home of the Air Mobility Force, RAF Brize Norton, the aircraft crewed by members of 24, 30, 70 and 47(AD) Squadrons flew more than 1,000 miles to Nurmsi drop zone, Estonia, where they dropped six bundles of stores to resupply UK troops taking part on Exercise DIRT TRACK.
I am extremely grateful to our Estonian partners for working with us to make this happen. It is an incredibly exciting time to be part of the team charged to deliver the tactical capabilities of Atlas on operations; I am hugely excited about the opportunities that await as we enhance the scope and scale of such activities.”
The aim was to conduct air-land integration with forces deployed on Operation CABRIT, while demonstrating the long-range insertion capabilities of Atlas as well as providing essential training to frontline Atlas crews newly qualified in this discipline. The mission highlighted the reach and payload of Atlas.
Wing Commander Patton Officer Commanding 30 Squadron “The delivery of long-range resupply by frontline crews is a major milestone for Atlas. The ability of this aircraft to deliver precision resupply at significant range from the UK - and to return home afterwards - offers enhanced and resilient force sustainment capabilities at a critical time for UK Defence. This has been a whole force effort that has been built on the professionalism and determination of those across the Atlas Force. Nevertheless, I am particularly proud that 30 Squadron – the world’s

NATO Allies are united in response to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and are collectively taking a range of measures to protect their security and deter further aggression. At a meeting of NATO Heads of State and government on 25 February all 30 member nations agreed that: This will lead to a doubling of the UK presence in Estonia, where the UK leads a NATO battlegroup as part of the Alliance’s enhanced Forward Presence. RAF Typhoon fighter jets have already completed their first air policing missions across the region, with an additional four aircraft based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. TEAM
The Day Dedicated to the Achievements of Women.
I
nternational Women’s Day (IWD) is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements - from the political to the economic and the social - while calling for gender equality. The day has been celebrated since its adoption by the United Nations in 1977. The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. International Women’s Day is not country, group, nor organization specific. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. Gloria Steinem, a world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained: “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” As female personnel gathered from across the Station, the Station Commander of RAF Brize Norton, Group Captain Emily Flynn, said: “It is important for me to mark international women’s day as the current Station Commander of the UK’s largest

Kitchener’s is centrally located between Great Yarmouth and Southwold with easy access transport links and a host of places to visit and things to do for both adults and children alike. You will find a warm welcome from the resident Manager, Ash, who served in the armed forces, and his wife Caroline. Amongst both regular and new guests, Kitchener’s has a solid reputation as being a place to relax and unwind amongst likeminded people; there’s nothing like the camaraderie and humour of those who have served our country, no matter in what capacity. With regular guests such as Royal Chelsea Pensioners and Normandy D-Day Vets, there are often stories to be heard from conflicts past. They too, love to speak with the younger veterans and serving personnel to hear about what is going on now and how things have changed. It is not uncommon to find a group gathered in the bar exchanging stories.

If being outdoors is more your thing, you will find plenty to do in the local area. As Kitchener’s is located on the seafront of the East coast, there’s plenty of opportunity for watersport activities. Alternatively, a short distance away, you can hire a boat for a day trip on the Norfolk Broads.

A stay at Kitchener’s is offered at a substantially discounted price for our veterans and serving armed forces and their families which is subsidised by grants and charitable donations. This allows us to offer a warm, friendly ‘home from home’ stay at an affordable price.

Easter Season is about change.
I
t is no coincidence that Easter falls in the springtime when dead things suddenly burst into life and there is a plethora of births within the countryside. Easter itself pre-dates Christianity in England being named after the ancient goddess ‘Eostre’ who was celebrated and venerated each springtime. I always admire people who don’t bother to re-invent the wheel and one day some clever Christian person felt that it would be a good idea to nick this ‘pagan’ festival and use if for something far bigger than a fertility/ chocolate fest. Thus, the festival was re-jigged and became one which, even today, celebrates the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Does goddess ‘Eostre’ approve? Who knows...? Working at Brize Norton we are all part of a moving and dynamic culture.
As military and allied personnel, change is in our DNA but sometimes it can be hard to keep up. As someone who has been out of regular service for only 18 months or so, I was floored by the changes that have happened in the small time I have been away and come back. But we try to adapt and overcome.
During these uncertain times, it is important to stay as rooted as we can. What inspires us? What energises us, what helps our resilience and feeds into coping mechanisms? Are we spending enough time getting the balance right? If we are not, then what can we do about it.
Overcoming, however, is not the easiest sometimes. I am sure, like the Chaplaincy team, you have been following the news with growing concern and anxiety. It is impossible not to be affected by it and the psychological shift we have all had to make is huge.
Of course, our prayers and thoughts are with the people of the Ukraine at this difficult time.
I am certain, at that initial Easter, the sense of loss, confusion and anger would have been there too. There was a positive outcome in the end, but when you are in the midst of the difficulties, it is sometimes hard to see the end point.
St Julian of Norwich once famously said: ‘all manner of things will be well.’ In the meantime, if a brew with the chaplains can help foster that sense of wellbeing, then we would love to see you. Happy Easter all. Padre ‘Cookie’ Cook.

FALCONS’ FOCUS
TEAM
With over 1,014 descents completed during Exercise FALCON STACK, the RAF Falcons’ winter training in California has come to an end.
T
he exercise plays a huge part of the team’s training ahead of their display season and this year will be one to remember.
Exercise FALCON STACK not only provides parachute canopy handling skills and discipline but it allows the Team to build close relationships ahead of their display season.
Flight Lieutenant Stu Philpott, Officer Commanding RAF Falcons, said: “Becoming OC Falcons is a once in a career opportunity and a special privilege that brings with it 60 + years of tradition and heritage, all of which is not lost on me. I’m looking forward to putting the RAF Falcons back at the centre of the RAF’s engagement strategy and having a display season to remember. The 2022 display season will bring new additions to our dynamic display and I look forward to seeing you all on the ground throughout the year.” The training has prepared the Team for the award of their Public Display Authority (PDA) which is normally presented by the Air Officer Commanding Number 2 Group in early spring ahead of the start of their display season. During their training, Wing Commander Hamish Pearson, Officer Commanding Airborne Delivery Wing, visited the RAF Falcons to see first-hand the training the Team undertake: “It was fantastic to see the professionalism and dedication of the Team in action. As with any high performing Team, the Falcons make their work look effortless and efficient but that only comes through hours, days, and weeks of dedicated practice. The training that they have completed in the US has put them in a very good place for the BRIZE NORTON ISSUE 2 2022
season ahead, for which it is planned to have the highest number of displays for many years.” Now the Falcons are back in the UK they will continue with their parachute training in Oxfordshire in preparation for the start of their 2022 season. New Deputy Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Mike Reeve said: “Since being out in the United States, the Team have been working hard on some exciting new elements to their Hybrid display format, some of which has been complemented by our friends over at the Sky Hawks! (Canadian Parachute Display
Team.) The season is shaping up to be busy one with displays all over the UK and Europe. I, along with the Team, are very much looking forward to the season ahead. Particularly for me, the displays back in my home county of Norfolk!” We will bring you all the up to date information or you can follow us on facebook – facebook.com/RAFFalcons

ROYAL AIR FORCE RESERVIST COMPETES IN INTER-SERVICES NETBALL
ADVENTURE & SPORT
LAC Emily Jakeman, serving on 2624 Squadron, was one of the members of the Royal Air Force netball squads.
S
he hadn’t expected to be able to have an incredible journey with RAF Netball on top of her RAFP training.
LAC Jakeman said: “The fact I’m a reservist didn’t limit me, with suitable training days and a supportive network of coaches, captains and team. We had been training incredibly hard over the last 7 months for the RAF Netball Interservices 2022. The hard work paid off, as RAF netball had achieved the best RAF results that the tournament has seen in a long time by coming a close 2nd to the Army in all three divisions. Including RAF Development beating the Navy Development team 37-13. It was an exhilarating few days for the whole squad, to a point I lost my voice, and I was so proud to be able to represent 2624 Sqn and other reservists in Sport. Bring on Season 2023!”

ULTRA RUNNING Ever considered doing an Ultra Run?
U
ltra-running has increased exponentially over the last 10 years and the RAF are looking into the sport with the aim of having it formally recognised by the UK Armed Forces Sports Board. For anyone that has never heard of ultra-running, or would like to know more, then continue reading; if you are interested please contact the undersigned. Many readers may be thinking what is ultra-running? Strictly speaking, an ultrarun is anything longer than a marathon (26.2 miles or 42.1 km). However, most ultra runs start at the 50 km (31 miles) distance and can go up to 100’s of km over multiple days and multiple terrains. The most common distances are 50 km, 100km and 100 miles. Having spoken to several people about my own ultra-running experience, I often hear comments like: ‘There is no way I could run that far’, ‘You are mad’ or ‘You must be superhuman’. Well, some of us may be mad but we are certainly not superhuman and very few ultrarunners ‘run’ the whole route. In fact, the average pace for an ultra-runner across all age groups is around 14.30 min/mile1. Depending on how long you have at rest stops, this is almost walking pace. Of course, there are individuals that go a lot faster and that is the great thing about ultra-running - there is an event for all abilities. Sqn Ldr Alfred Hall talks about why he decided to take on an ultra-run this year. “I’d seen Ultra runners and events but just thought they were an absolute
26
of the previous miles. The other plus is that I can eat chocolate without feeling guilty! The average person burns between 314-391 calories per hour at a brisk walking pace of 3.5mph and 606-755 calories per hour running at 5mph 3. So, for a 50km (31mile) event, that equates to around 2,800–3,500 and 3,700-4,600 calories respectively! All shapes, sizes and levels of fitness participate in ultra-runs and with the right training you too can complete one. flogging and not for me with my dodgy knees! A few years ago, I started parkrun and met people there who seemed like me and they explained more about it. At parkrun I manage 8-minute mile pace, but they do their ultras at 14-15 minute mile pace. I’ve tried that a few times and now really enjoy the pace which I manage by jogging a section then walking. Lockdown really helped and I noticed how much more I was enjoying being out at a slower pace”. The health benefits of exercise are well documented and include improved physiological and psychological effects. But what makes ultra-running different? As someone that has completed a variety of ultra-events over the last 20 years (most recent being the 100km Thames Path Challenge last year) the biggest drive for me is the exhilaration I feel when I go over the finish line after being on my feet for over 15 hours. I personally don’t care about my time; it is the psychological challenge of finishing the event that attracts me – being able to push my body through the tiredness
To put this into perspective, 544 people competed in the 100km Thames Path Challenge I did last year; the first person came in at 09 hours 57 mins and the last person in 36 hours 14 mins. An ultra-run is also a good way of raising money for charity. Last year’s Thames Path Challenge raised nearly £1.5 million! An ultra-run is a challenging event (it wouldn’t be worth doing it if it wasn’t!), but one that can give you an immense sense of achievement when you finish it, whatever your ability. If ultra-running is something you would consider trying or you have any further questions, then please contact the undersigned. Contact details: Sgt Caroline Maynard-Burrows. RAF TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
ADVENTURE & SPORT
Brize takes home Silverware at the RAF Table Tennis Championships.
I
n March three personnel - Sgt Bache, SAC Grocock and SAC Hudson represented RAF Brize Norton at the RAF Table Tennis Championships 2022.
The first event was the Station Team event where a team of 3 from each station played each other - 9 games in all. Team Brize beat Boulmer 6-3 and moved into the next round when the success continued with team Brize winning 5-4 against team Waddington. This was followed by the final where the skill of team Brize bagged a 5-4 win against Benson; this resulted in taking their first piece of silverware. In the second event, Sgt Bache and SAC Grocock played in the Station doubles. After 4 good wins they made it into the final where their skilled techniques won them their second piece of silverware. The second part of the championships saw the start of the Open Singles, U25s, Vets, open doubles, ladies and mixed doubles.
After their great start to the tournament, hopes were high but the standards of all the competitors were very good. Sgt Bache got through to the quarter-final stage of the open singles, and Sgt Bache and SAC Grocock made it to the semi-finals of the open doubles. SAC Grocock, after being knocked out of the main singles event, went on to play in the Plate Cup Final and was successful in winning. At the trophy presentations Sgt Bache was also awarded the best newcomer. All in all, this was a fantastic RAF Table Tennis Championships for team Brize! Sgt Bache said: “This was a terrific result for Brize as all 3 of us had never played together before and to bring home the silverware for the Station team event for the first time ever (the tournament trophy as been played for since 1955) is a great achievement and then to top off with the Station Doubles as well was great. Then for SAC Grocock to win the singles plate event and for me to get best newcomer was a wonderful end to a firsttime appearance. Hopefully we can continue with our successes in the future.” BRIZE NORTON ISSUE 2 2022
