FOREWORD
By Wing Commander Helena Ramsden BEng(Hons) MSc CEng MIET RAF, OC No.1 Radio School A journey is called that because you cannot know what you will do with what you find, or what you find will do to you. (James Baldwin)
I
For the first time in 2 years, we have a real glimmer of hope that normality is on the horizon. I’m sure that the recent announcement that the 2022 Cosford Air Show taking place on 12 June has been very well received, not just across the station but across the region and among the wider aviation enthusiast community. If early ticket sale figures are anything to go by, there are a lot of people out there eager to visit Cosford for the first time since 2019. In a year that will rightly be dominated by Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and the Commonwealth Games, the Air Show is just one of many events that Cosford will either support or take part in during the coming year. For the first time since 2019, No 1 S of TT will be sending personnel and apprentices to RIAT. A busy ceremonial calendar has been set, the highlights promise to be the Birmingham International Tattoo and an Approbation parade in Albrighton. In this edition of the Cosford Apprentice, you’ll also see that the RAF Museum have got some great plans for 2022. They have plenty of events lined up that you will want to put in your diaries. I don’t know about you, but after the last couple of years I know I’m looking forward to getting out there and showing off the best of Cosford!
stumbled upon this quote listening to a lecture online and it resonated with me. Being back in the training environment has brought back so many memories of my early career and prompted reflection on how my Air Force journey has evolved, and how I have evolved with it. Without doubt the Service has enabled me to realise many of my early goals and aspirations, including operational deployments, adventurous training, RAF sport and academic study, not to mention working with some truly remarkable people. But little could I have imagined that I would take the reins as Officer Commanding No.1 Radio School and hold the privilege and responsibility of ushering in the Air Force’s next generation. In the 6 months since I took command, I have been endlessly impressed by the incredible positivity and innovation which has been displayed by the School’s staff and students to meet the challenges of training delivery in the COVID era. Amongst many notable achievements the team have applied a broad array of expertise to embrace remote learning, develop industry-standard Advanced Coders’ training and negotiate the recognition of vocational experience towards the Wolverhampton University Cert Ed programme. I have also been heartened to see that our collective enthusiasm for Sport, Adventurous Training, Force Development, charity work and community engagement
‘‘
remains strong. Every student should leave training with a firm appreciation of the breadth of opportunity which the RAF has to offer and how to pursue their personal and professional goals throughout their careers and I am truly grateful to be part of an organisation which generates and promotes such opportunities for its people.

Despite these accomplishments, the experience of COVID has nonetheless fundamentally altered the student experience across the Defence training enterprise. But the fact that such progress has been made in the face of this adversity is testament to the tenacity of our staff, the resilience of our trainees and our collective determination to be the best we can be for the RAF’s next generation. And that is what lies at the heart of what all Schools deliver at Cosford; trained personnel with the skills and attitudes to rise to the challenges of the future, whatever it may bring. So, to open the first Cosford Apprentice this year, I would like to wish you all the very best on your travels through 2022, wherever it takes us. Together, we can and do make a difference.

ESCAPE REALITY with Board Games and TTRPG at the ARC
solation has been shown as a contributing factor in worsening mental health, and those with mental health issues tend to report increased loneliness. However, it can be difficult for those suffering with issues such as depression and anxiety to step out and make new friends. Board games solve a lot of these problems as they offer a structured way to meet others. Instead of needing to strike up a conversation from scratch, having a game as the focus of the activity allows friendships to build slowly in a less formal or pressured way. Board games are a great way to connect with others, to take you away from the normal troubles of life for a few hours, and to give your brain a workout. This is because board games offer escapism, a chance to leave your daily worries behind for a while and do something completely different. You can build civilisations, control vast armies, strategize, hunt zombies or even try to take over the world. There’s
6 COSFORD APPRENTICE
no need to worry about the minutiae of life for a few hours, you can escape in the game itself and immerse yourself in a world away from your own. Here at the ARC, we offer the opportunity to come along at any time, alone or with friends, and enjoy our facilities and a vast range of Board Games. We have all the classics such as Monopoly, Chess, Risk, Scrabble, Battle
Ships and many, many more. Don’t see what you like? Make a request through the ARC or by contacting the TTRPG club on the Cosford SharePoint and we can make it happen. We are also expanding into the realms of fantasy Role Playing Games both virtually and in person. With games like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder growing exponentially over the last few years, and encompassing larger
audiences than ever, why not give it a try, you may just like it….. For more information feel free to call into the ARC. Alternatively you can email Cpl Chris King christopher. king484@mod.gov.uk or Cpl John Cross john.cross132@ mod.gov.uk or come along on a Tuesday evening between 19:00 and 22:00 if we are hosting a TTRPG.

When dealing with individual’s needs, the PTI needs to be able to listen effectively and allow the person to explore barriers to change as well as helping them set realistic goals. This should always be a client centred approach to change which ensures they take ownership, and control of their goals. The PTI completes training in motivational interviewing during the PTI course which is predominantly for those who fail the RAF Fitness Test. However, the carry over to utilising this skill to whole force personnel is evident in the services they provide daily. November: During this month on top of the tasks conducted daily, the PEd Flt also delivered a CO’s cup event ‘Minute to Win It’. This allowed sections across Cosford to compete in a multitude of activities, each lasting 1 minute. All personnel across the whole force were able to participate with the team scoring the highest
number being the victors. They were also pivotal in a successful McMillan coffee morning which raised over £400 in support of McMillan. Fresh coffee, Tea and cold drinks were provided as well as a variety of fresh Cakes. Cpl Tracey Down pulled the whole team together to make sure the event was well attended while also raising money for a worthwhile cause! December: Another CO’s cup event to finish the year. As is tradition across PEd Flt’s, a quiz was put together and delivered. A general knowledge quiz that allowed teams to share their vast knowledge in all subject matter (or not as the case may be). In the run up to the festive season this was a well-attended event that saw teams from the SofPT and BSW in joint first place! The annual Turkey Trot was carried out throughout the day

The event started at 2300 on 31st January, and involved 12 6.7km, one-hour legs. Each participant carried 24.5kg distributed throughout their webbing and bergen, and their personal weapon. The first individual leg was completed by Sergeant Gilligan with Flight Lieutenant O’Rourke completing the final one. Upon completion of the individual legs the entire group completed the final stretch at the RAF Cosford Museum together, with the event finishing at 1130 on 1st February. Personnel at RAF Cosford urged to get on their bikes for RAFA Rides
N
ot much about the last two years has been certain, but one thing that has remained constant is the Royal Air Forces Association’s support of the RAF community. On 5 June 2021, 810 riders joined together from around the world to take part in RAFA Rides 2021. This included 250 who cycled routes around the beautiful Leicestershire and Rutland countryside, with the rest joining virtually. Friendship and maintaining connections are key elements in much of the welfare delivered by the Association and RAFA Rides shares these values. Personnel, families and contractors at RAF
Cosford can be part of RAFA Rides 2022, taking place on Saturday 11 June 2022. You can show your support for those who are serving, those who have served and their families, and have some bicycle-related fun at the same time! The event, made possible thanks to generous ongoing support from security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin UK, was created so people across the world could join together both in person and virtually, in support of the RAF community. While a great deal of the Association’s work is for more vulnerable members of our community, serving personnel can benefit also from support.
This can be a bedtime story recorded for a child while you are working away from home, online mental wellbeing courses, affordable and nurturing early years childcare on RAF stations or an online forum for those caring for people living with dementia. Air Vice-Marshal Gary Waterfall, RAF Association ambassador and RAFA Rides founder, said: “RAFA Rides 2021 surpassed all our expectations. In just four years, this annual ride has become a real highlight in the cycling calendar. As the last miles were ridden, we were already thinking about the next year’s ride and it is going to be bigger and better. I urge everyone with a bike to sign up.” Amy Petterson, Head of Community Fundraising at

the RAF Association, added: “The support for RAFA Rides from within the serving RAF community is incredible, as is the atmosphere of (mostly) friendly competition! Many riders enjoyed the sense of all riding together for a cause close to their hearts, even if they were cycling alone out on the roads or in their home.” Anyone who loves cycling, and wants to join riders around the world in supporting the RAF community, can sign up now for RAFA Rides 2022 on Saturday 11 June. You could challenge other trades or branches on your station. You could challenge other stations. Or you could challenge yourself. Whoever you challenge, sign up now and start training and fundraising!

REMEMBRANCE TRIATHLON FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION On the 11th November 2021, a small group of personnel from No1RS organised a Remembrance Triathlon for the Royal British Legion.
The three events consisted of an 1100yard swim at Codsall Leisure Centre, 11KM run and 11Mile cycle using the equipment at RAF Cosford gymnasium. It was an early start, meeting at Codsall for 0645, and dipping into the pool for 07:15 for roughly 45 minutes. After that a quick drive to the camp gym, ready for a sweaty run and cycle, to complete the event and join the station Remembrance Service. In all, the intention was to raise £1100 for the RBL, which through John McGlasson and every one else’s work, was blown past to raising over £1300. Considering the last two years have seen a vast drop in charity and sports events, being able to run something for a great cause, and link it to Remembrance has been fantastic; we’ll keep moving forward through the pandemic and run more. The assistance of the gymnasium, Codsall Leisure Centre, and Station Executives has been invaluable to getting it off the ground.
EOFT 30 TAKES ON 100K IN 30 DAYS EOFT Cse 30 have embarked on the RAF Cosford 100km Challenge. This involves running 100km in 30 days, in aid of the RAF Central Fund. Despite long days in the classroom, the course goes running after work to fulfil the challenge, whatever the weather. A perfect way to burn off the festive calories! They’ve even managed to incorporate the challenge into their PT lessons (shown), chipping away at the km’s!

DEFENCE SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY T
he Defence School of Photography is the largest, if not only, dedicated school to military photography outside of the United States and is on the verge of the biggest change it has seen in professional photography since the evolution from film to digital photography. For over 100 years, Defence photographers have helped shape the global reputation of the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces. They allow UK Defence to tell its story at home and overseas, documenting force projection worldwide to local, national and international audiences, through still and moving imagery. But as Defence changes, our professional photographer course has had to change. The Defence School of Photography is replacing outdated training systems with new, competencybased systems to significantly reduce the time it takes for personnel to reach the front line. This change marks the end of 18 years of the 5300 Defence Photographer course, which is to be replaced with a combined visual-communicator video and stills course. Tune in next time as we celebrate the end of 5300. And for you budding amateur photographers out there, we are starting a feature to help you take the best pictures anywhere, any time. Here is the first instalment of our tips and tricks to help you take better smartphone photos! Smartphone cameras have come a long way in a short time, and most handsets now give you some control over the focus and exposure of your pictures.
1. Adjust focus to make sure your picture is sharp and in focus where you want it to be – focus is usually activated with a tap on the screen, on the point where you want the camera to focus. 2. Adjust exposure to make your photograph lighter or darker – you can do this on iPhone by tapping the sun icon next to the focus point and then adjusting it by moving the slider up or down. It’s a similar story on Android or there may be a sun that brings up the slider to make the picture lighter or darker. Give it a try! Tune in next time for more tips! And if you fancy taking your own pictures or need help getting started to take pictures, you can try one of the tasks our students were set recently – photograph ‘a process’ using only three shots.

NUMBER ONE SCHOOL OF TECHNICAL TRAINING (NO. 1 SOFTT) by Flt Lt Bryn Mullard, Dep OC MTS
A
People Make it Work
s 2022 goes full steam ahead, it only seems right to pause, and just take a moment to reflect on what has been achieved by the Staff and Students across the Number One School of Technical Training. (No. 1 SofTT).
As we focus on our daily tasks, routines, and inevitably the stresses which are associated with responsibility, we often succumb to the blinkers we don unknowingly. We can easily fall foul of remembering the bigger picture, so it is good to be reminded and share what has been achieved with each other and remember the incredible impact that each and everyone of us has on operational output. Over the past 3 months the No. 1 SofTT has seen over 300 technicians graduate into their chosen engineering profession, and even though this is the School’s primary function, it does not come without its challenges. With a full training calendar, our staff have devoted time to ensure the success of several visits to the school. Engagement with future generations continues to excel;
hosting around 150 students from RAFAC and military preparation college, the School looked to develop their knowledge of the RAF, discuss our role in defence and explore technical profession opportunities. We hosted the Armed Forces Parliamentary Trust and supported visits from the Rapid Capabilities Office and Defence College of Technical Training HQ, all organised
and executed by Staff within the School.
examples, I will share just a few of how people make it work.
All that we achieve as a Force, Station, or School is only achievable because of the people within our organisation. It is their dedication, drive, professionalism, and ability to adapt which continues to astound me. Although I could fill a complete magazine with names and
A key element of the UK’s response to the Coronavirus outbreak involved the military helping and supporting the authorities such as NHS or Police. Cpl Shuttleworth was called into action for Op Rescript in Scotland, where he joined 125 personnel across the 3 services for booster rollout. He was deployed at Falkirk Community Hospital and Aberdeen Vaccination Centre where he administered over 2,000 COVID booster vaccinations and over 1,000 Flu vaccinations. A huge achievement and contribution to our country’s recovery. Sgt Vaughan was also deployed on Op Rescript but located in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. Employed to fulfil the shortage of ambulance drivers and paramedics across the country, he received 3 days of first aid, equipment, and driver training before going onto assist paramedics in attending blue and red-light calls. During his time, he administered first aid to patients in critical condition, performed CPR, attended road

traffic accidents, and assisted the Police and Fire Service. During deployment Sgt Vaughan was first to arrive at a major incident at Cleddau river involving paddle boarders. He sprung into action and quickly entered the river to retrieve casualties, going on to perform lifesaving first aid and provide medical treatment. His incredible support to Ambulance crews, Paramedics, and Coast Guards, have been recognised and acknowledged by the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust and remains a true inspiration for us all. My final example turns to another true inspiration who has been pivotal in the success of the school throughout her career. WO Marie Cross joined the RAF in November 1985 as a Weapons Mechanic, and has completed tours at Coningsby, Marham, Brize Norton, and served in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Returning to Cosford as an instructor in 2004, she gained her Certificate of Education and was promoted to Chief Technician in 2008, returning to RAF Brize Norton where she set up the Weapons Training Cell, delivering Explosive Load Training to over 100 Ground Engineers for Operations. Rewarded with her promotion to Flight Sergeant she returned to DSAE Cosford in 2013 as the Weapons Training Supervisor within the No.1 SofTT, and it was during this post where her achievements set

her out amongst her Weapon Engineering colleagues and was to be the 1st female Weapons Engineer Warrant Officer in the Royal Air Force.
’’
Taking on the role as WO No.1 SofTT, she has been instrumental in ensuring the School embraces new facilitation methods, so that both staff and students receive the best possibility for success. A central figure within the HQ function of the school, WO Cross has used her extensive experience and knowledge to help guide the school to new levels of success. It was during this tenure that she was recognised for her outstanding contribution to training and community and was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List of Jan 2020. Mrs Cross now looks to a future outside the RAF, but we wish her all the happiness in the world, as she enjoys her retirement. We thank you endlessly for your dedication, aura and service. As we move towards life postpandemic, we will see the school support both the Royal International Air Tattoo and Cosford Airshow once again. I know that plans are already underway for these events, which will be a great success! But I also know these next few months will see numerous other challenges that will require navigation but have no doubt we will succeed because the people that make this organisation work are what will make 2022 a success.
