WEST MIDLANDS

This region comprises of Yorkshire as well as North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

The largest settlements being Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull and York.

Leeds is the largest city in the northern regions and The Royal Armouries, houses the national collection of arms and artillery. Leeds is also known for its trendy bars, live music and bustling Market stalls.

The city of York is an eclectic mix of old and new, from the city walls, cobbled streets and charming medieval buildings, to modern shops and restaurants; furthermore with its varied and vibrant calendar of events and festivals means there is always something happening in the city.

However, if you are looking for tranquility and picturesque views then Yorkshire is home to two national parks, the heather moorlands of the North York Moors and the Penine Hills of the Yorkshire Dales where you can roam and explore.

Runswick Bay, with its sweeping, sheltered bay and charming red roofed cottages is certainly one of the Yorkshire Coast’s prettiest destinations. The sandy beach once provided anchorage for brightly coloured fishing boats, but is now a family favourite for rock pooling, fossil hunting and coastal walks, where you can admire the breathtaking sea views. WELCOME TO QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S

OUR BOARDING COMMUNITY

We have a boarding community here unlike any other, a unique blend of cultures and nationalities, where friendships are formed that last a lifetime.

We have a strong foundation built on listening to the needs of others, engaging with life and all it has to offer, attending every commitment with enthusiasm, respecting each other and never giving up on attaining our goals.

We create a second home for our students and try to emulate the boundaries and expectations that you as parents would want to implement.

QE’s life-long learning programme supports our boarding students with invaluable skills and our dedicated boarding team understand that the soft skills they promote outside the classroom are every bit as valuable as the academic skills gained during the school day.

At the heart of our boarding offer is the desire to help our students to develop the outlook and skills they need to prepare them for their undoubtedly successful futures. Set in more than 220 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, Queen Ethelburga’s has provided students with a vibrant and supportive school community since 1912.

We support girls and boys in their educational journey through our four schools - Chapter House (3 months to Year 5), King’s Magna (Year 6 to 9), The College and Faculty (both Year 10 to 13) – to become resilient, confident and independent young adults who are well prepared for their future.

QE is known locally, nationally and internationally as a place that promotes the highest standards in all that it does. Our reputation has grown considerably over recent years, and we believe this is due to our drive to ensure that our outcomes for QE students, across all areas of their endeavour and aspiration, match those of the world’s best schools.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) awarded the Collegiate the top grading of Excellent across all schools and areas in 2019, praising pupils’ outstanding academic achievements and personal development.

EXAMINATIONS

Our exam results speak for themselves, consistently ranking us amongst the top 10 day and boarding schools in the UK, with students benefiting from wonderful study, boarding and leisure facilities as part of campus life.

The Times Independent Schools Guide ranked us the No.1 independent secondary school in the North of England for exam performance. In 2021, the academically focused College achieved 96 per cent A*/B at A Level. The Faculty, which offers a wider range of academic, creative and vocational courses, achieved 92 percent A*/B at A Level and 75% D*/D grades in BTECs.

OUR FORCES CONNECTION

QE has a long standing relationship with the British Forces, welcoming students from Military families for over 100 years.

As a preferred school for Forces families in the UK, we currently have over 300 Forces students boarding with us.

We welcome boarders from Year 3 onwards and pride ourselves on our wrap-around specialist support for our Military students and their families. We understand the importance of providing a secure and supportive home from home for students whose parents may need to travel or live abroad for work. We strive to create the right learning and living environment in which every one of our students can thrive.

THRIVE@QE

At QE we have an excellent pastoral team who run our THRIVE@QE programme, ensuring that our student’s mental health and resilience is a priority. The team are available for students at any time of day or night.

There is a dedicated area in the school where THRIVE activities take place and students can go for help and support. We have two specialist Forces liaison officers, a keeping in touch club for our students and support clinics. In these sessions, staff help students to contact parents who may be deployed abroad, chat about issues that are important to them and anything else that they might need help and support with. We also run a ‘buddy’ system between students and have Peer Mentors in the Sixth Form, who are very happy to chat to our younger students and offer their support.

Boarding facilities at QE support easy and direct communication with student’s families, with direct phone lines in each room. In addition, we do not have specific “exeat” weekends and parents are able to let their children have any weekends away from school to enable their children to visit relatives or friends.

FEES SUPPORT

We are CEA accredited and in recognition of our commitment to the British Forces, we offer a significant reduction in fees. This means our Forces parental contribution is only £1050 per term for the academic school year 2021/22.

Employer provided Childcare Vouchers and Government issued Tax Free Childcare Vouchers are accepted for qualifying activities such as After School Clubs, Music Lessons, etc. and any boarding element, for up to 15 years of age for Employer Childcare Vouchers and up to 11 years of age for Tax Free Childcare Vouchers. This means we are one of the most competitively

THE QE COMBINED CADET FORCE

QE has its own Combined Cadet Force (CCF), bringing together an Army Section (Yorkshire Regiment) and an RAF section.

Choosing to be part of the CCF offers students the chance to develop real life skills that will help them achieve success in life and in the workplace. They learn leadership skills, how to handle responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and discipline through militarythemed activities.

Students can volunteer to join the CCF from Year 9. Following recruit training, cadets are given the opportunity to choose whether to join the Army Section or the RAF Section.

Training is exciting and challenging, it places great emphasis on self-reliance and responsibility. It is safe, but above all fun! Senior cadets are also encouraged to motivate and train more junior members, giving them a chance to develop their leadership skills and gain promotion.

Through the CCF, cadets can attend external courses, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and various nationally recognised vocational diplomas in Personal Development, to gain further new skills and experiences.

TEAMQE

All of Queen Ethelburga’s students follow a sports programme with the values of fair play, honesty and determination at its heart. Our E motto of ‘be the best that I can, with the gifts that I have’ is never more evident than through the work we do as TEAM QE. Health and fitness is a vital part of school life for QE students with many continuing with sport and exercise, either recreationally or as a route of study, through to their chosen university or career pathway. There are a wide range of sports and activities available including: rugby, hockey, football, netball, cricket, swimming, basketball, rounders, tennis, fencing, dance, gymnastics, trampolining, archery, cross country, badminton, and volleyball. The facilities on campus are outstanding, with the recent development of our dedicated Sports Village, to which all students have additional access outside of formal school hours. The Village is home to a 25-metre swimming pool, triple court sports hall, 100 station fitness suite and free weights centre. Outside we have a four-lane synthetic cushioned running track and over 30 acres of grass and 3G artificial pitches. We also have a number of specialist studios used for; martial arts, wrestling, dance, gymnastics, table tennis, cycling, archery, fencing and boxing.

Staff cater for all abilities and encourage each student to enjoy all the fantastic opportunities on offer during their time at QE.

LIFE ON CAMPUS

Life on campus is a careful balance of organised activities, trips and socials, providing opportunities for students to independently spend time with their friends and make the most of the fantastic facilities on offer. Socials are held regularly, with students enjoying spending time with one another, whether it be a formal black-tie event with all its traditions and etiquette, a paint party or a cookery competition.

QE’s also runs rewards weeks to celebrate success and effort and these are always very popular with the students voting to choose the rewards. There are six dedicated play areas across campus, creatively purpose-built for the age groups that use them. This is balanced with a number of tranquil gardens where students can relax and reflect. The Muggles activity centre is a vibrant and engaging complex designed for all students to relax, have fun and socialise. Facilities include an indoor lounge area, games area and 3D cinema, whilst the outdoor offer includes a BMX track, climbing wall, assault course and trampolines. Students also have access to a range of sporting equipment to use at the various sports pitches and facilities across campus.

The Muggles café offers delicious food from Friday evening to Sunday each week. The King’s Theatre on site is run as a professional venue, combining inhouse performances with external productions and shows. It has a packed programme of practical workshops, performances, music festivals, talks and presentations throughout the year, providing wonderful opportunities for student enjoyment and participation.

The Queen’s Academy, is an exciting and enriching on-site Creative Arts initiative, which provides students with openaccess to music practice rooms, arts studios and a wide range of workshops and skill-based projects on their evenings and weekends.

FACILITIES

QE boarding is known for its modern facilities, which support student development and provide a safe and productive environment for them to thrive.

All our bedrooms are airconditioned, provide ample room to study and include private en-suite bathrooms with a toilet and shower. Every boarder has access to a wellequipped common room where they can enjoy downtime and opportunities to get together and socialise, as well as plenty of outdoor space.

ENRICHMENT

We have a dedicated Enrichment Leadership Team, who ensure that all our students can benefit from the extensive programme of opportunities we provide. Students discuss participation alongside their academic progress with their tutors, to ensure that they are individually tailored to as they progress through each year at QE.

Students can choose from over 100 Enrichment Activities from the following categories to encourage a breadth of experiences: Community, Creativity, Culture, Health & Exercise and Leadership. We also work with students and staff to make sure that the timetabling of activities enables them to make the most of the opportunities on offer and get maximum use out of our facilities.

A fulfilling outreach and volunteering programme enables our students to contribute positively to the lives of others within our local community, providing valuable mentoring to students with severe learning needs at a local secondary school and support at community care homes and charity projects. Charity Gala dinners and tea parties held for local elderly residents are hosted by our students, who also deliver musical performances, serve meals and refreshments, and share stories.

There are opportunities for students to take academic subjects beyond the classroom, learn or master a skill, contribute to conservation and community projects and learn about history and culture across the UK and beyond!

All of our residential trips aim to develop a passion for exploring the world and equip students to become accomplished travellers; developing skills such as navigating both rural and city landscapes, reading public transport systems and timetables and ordering food in a new language.

ACKWORTH SCHOOL Since 1779, we have maintained a passion for teaching and learning at Ackworth School. We are proud of our traditions and family values, but equally proud of our innovative approach to co-education, given we are the oldest independent co-ed boarding school in the country. HISTORY Ackworth School is steeped in history. Founded in 1779 by John Fothergill, a prominent Quaker, well respected for making significant advances in science and medicine. Quakers are well known for their tolerance, and their honesty and simplicity; these principles still form part of the fabric of our school.

Today, Ackworth is a rich tapestry of beliefs and origins. Most of our pupils are from non-Quaker families and around ten per cent come from other countries - the international flavour of our school, especially in the Sixth Form, is another of Ackworth’s distinctive features. Everyone has something to offer.

We all have our unique gifts. Everyone shares a mutual pride in our school. Whatever our individual beliefs, we’re all united by Quaker principles of Simplicity, Truth, Equality, Peace and Sustainability. These simple values underscore our approach to ensuring all our children have the support and structure to fulfil their potential, make a positive contribution in the wider community and progress to be the best they can be. Ackworth is a dynamic and forward-thinking school. We strive to develop resilient individuals who not only think creatively, but also act ethically and with responsibility. We encourage our students to express themselves with confidence, to embody the Quaker value of speaking respectfully to others, but also in a way that is true to themselves and their beliefs. Located in a beautiful rural setting in Yorkshire, we offer broad educational opportunities from nursery age to Sixth Form, for day pupils and boarders. ACADEMIC First-class teaching is at the heart of any good school and Ackworth benefits greatly from the quality and experience of its teaching staff. Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum but taking advantage of the flexibility we enjoy as an independent school. We encourage students to make curriculum choices which suit them best and much advice and guidance is on offer to help them to do this. There are students at Ackworth who are highly successful academically, achieving top grades and going on to some of the top universities in the country. We also have some students who achieve more modest results – but for them this is a huge triumph. We value all our students and encourage them to perform as highly as they can. This is only possible thanks to our dedicated teaching staff. It also reflects the fact that Ackworth is extremely well resourced. It has spacious, well-equipped Science laboratories, outstanding Art, Music and Drama facilities and a first-class Library. The Sports facilities are excellent and specialist ICT and Design and Technology facilities are well established. When it’s right to take the new step, the Ackworth School Oxbridge Programme supports our Sixth Form students with a pathway to some of the most competitive placements at UK universities. With the top courses becoming increasingly more sought after, it is well known good grades form just one part of a successful application. UNIVERSITY PREPARATION The Oxbridge Pathways Programme is designed to support pupils in their applications to their chosen universities, whether it be a Russell Group university such as Oxford or Cambridge, or any other competitive course. The extensive two-year programme teaches students the essential skills needed to succeed not just in moving onto their chosen course, but also after graduation. CO-CURRICULAR

We offer a blend of academic and extra-curricular activities which are open to everyone and are generally cost inclusive. Exciting residential visits and opportunities to become involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award are just some of the ways students can broaden their horizons.

We also offer a choice of over 70 lunchtime and after-school activities including the junior school band, gardening club and a variety of energising pursuits including dance, gymnastics, aerobics, eSports and indoor climbing. It’s all about getting active and involved.

SPORT

Sport at Ackworth is not about learning to win. It’s about understanding that participating in competitive sports including soccer, netball, hockey, badminton, cricket and tennis is a great way to make new friends, work together and stay fit.

At each stage of their development, a full programme of fixtures against other schools and a number of Inter-House competitions, provides our pupils with the opportunity to develop their individual sporting talents and enjoy playing as part of a team.

Ackworth prides itself on the wide range of sports accessible to the students in both Junior and Senior School. Sports and physical and mental well-being are very important to today’s students providing them with a positive foundation for their academic work. Sport can expose a student to self-

discipline, practice and preparation, teamwork, goal setting, success and failure, and resilience.

Ackworth is a UK boarding school with a proud reputation of sporting success, this is showcased in our elite sports academies. The sports academies offer the chance for talented students to train under world class coaches in tailor made programmes in football, table tennis and squash.

Offering an elite football development programme for boys and girls, the academy is run by Jamie Fullarton, an ex English Premier League footballer, and qualified UEFA Pro licence coach. The academy has three teams: U19s, U16s and U12s, including a Girls’ team launching in September 2021.

In addition to an internationally renowned coach, the facilities at Ackworth are outstanding; boasting five full-sized pitches, an all-weather pitch and an indoor training area. Students enrolled on the football academy can also take full advantage of the heated indoor swimming pool and newly purpose-built fitness suite.

We are a proud supporter of BECSLink and the Tim Henman Foundation which looks to increase social mobility and transform lives through sport.

PASTORAL

We’re passionate about ensuring our pupils experience the same security and nurturing in school as they do at home.

All our pupils have a Form Tutor dedicated to their academic progress, pastoral welfare and enjoyment of school activities. Your child has the reassurance of knowing there is someone on site to guide them and bridge the gap between home and school. In Senior School, pupils in forms 1 - 5 have two Form Tutors. As they move up to the Sixth Form, they have a Personal Tutor who mentors them throughout their remaining two years with us.

Just as our staff care for our pupils, we encourage our pupils to care for those around them. This can be something as simple as giving their time in support of collections for charity, or sharing their lunch table with younger pupils.

If parents are considering boarding as an option, we know how important it will be to parents to know that your son or daughter will be taken care of in a secure, caring and comfortable environment.

We know it’s a big decision. Naturally parents need peace of mind that your child will be completely happy and at home here.

British and overseas students flourish in Ackworth School’s boarding community, where they enjoy an integrated education and social life and benefit from the enriching opportunity to share a room with someone from another cultural background.

Providing an environment where children can feel free to explore their creative side not only makes for happier children, it also helps them to develop vital problemsolving skills for the future.

We encourage all our pupils – not only those with obvious talents – to try their hand at Design, Art, Music, Textiles, Food and Nutrition and Drama, both inside and outside the classroom. Whatever a child’s individual talent we will make sure they have the time and space to enjoy and express it. BOARDING

Since its foundation in 1779, Ackworth has always been a mixed boarding school and currently about one third of the Senior School boards. There are separate boarding houses for boys and girls, each with comprehensive care, guidance and support appropriate to the age of the pupils. The main aim of both of the houses is to provide a ‘home from home’.

Both ‘houses’ are located in the main school building which therefore provides a safe and secure environment whilst also giving easy access to all facilities including the dining rooms and classrooms. All doors to the boarding houses are secured by key pad locks so restricting access only to residents.

Most boarders share a bedroom with one or two other students, with our more senior pupils having their own individual rooms. There are common rooms for playing table tennis, watching television and playing Playstation, or for simply having a chat over a cup of tea and a piece of toast. Resident teaching staff are available at all times and other staff, including the Head and Deputy Heads, live on site. If a student is ill during the school day there is an on-site health centre with a school doctor and nurse. We cannot replace parents but we do everything we can to make boarders feel at home.

The boarders learn to live in a tightly knit community with a wide age range and a strong international mix. There has to be give and take, and older students provide a helping and supportive hand. All of this is immensely valuable but, above all, many boarders simply find boarding fun.

Boarding helps students to focus on study. Time and energy are not wasted on travel and boarders have access to the School’s excellent library late into the evening and throughout the weekend.

Most importantly the houses are happy, safe and comfortable environments which give the students the support they need to make the most of their time at Ackworth and to help them achieve as much as they can in all areas of life, both academically and beyond the classroom in our wide co-curricular programme.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

Ackworth offers a wide variety of scholarships, awards and bursaries at ages 11+, 13+ and 16+. Awards are offered in Academic, Music, Art, Drama and Sport.

BOARDING

Over the past two years, Scarborough College has invested well over four million pounds in its boarding facilities. The results are two remodelled boarding houses that lift the concept of boarding to a different level.

The College’s location is such that boarders have a genuine sense of ‘closing the door and going home’ at the end of each day. As a school that does not feature Saturday school, SC boarders can open their curtains on a weekend morning and see something other than school buildings.

This feature allowed architects, boarding staff and pupils to get together and discuss their idea of a home away from home. The results are homely boarding houses, designed as family houses and upgraded with modern details such as USB plug sockets and underfloor heating. Pupils coming home into this boarding environment take great pride in where they love, keep the place tidy and are far more excited to contribute to the boarding environment in general.

SCARBOROUGH COLLEGE

Founded in 1898, Scarborough College is one of Yorkshire’s leading co-educational day and boarding schools for pupils aged between 3 and 18.

Since its foundation as a boys’ school, Scarborough College has provided a life-changing education to boys, and girls eventually, based on high standards, a climate of aspiration and a commitment to providing an individualised learning journey for every pupil.

Initially, the Scarborough College Company was founded to give boys an opportunity to prepare for university while enjoying living by the seaside. The boys briefly lodged elsewhere when, in 1914, the College came under heavy fire by the German fleet. Again, in 1940, the boys were reallocated as the building was commandeered by the RAF to serve as a training establishment.

In 1972, the College opened its doors to girls, making Scarborough College a co-educational day and boarding school. Nearby Bramcote Prep School was acquired in 2012, which means that parents had access to one outstanding school on the North Yorkshire coast providing independent education for children aged 3 to 18 years old.

IB WORLD SCHOOL

Scarborough College is an IB World School. Sixth Form students sit the IB Diploma Programme, which is a rigorous programme of six subjects and three core elements including an Extended Essay. In years 10 and 11, the College offers GCSEs and pupils from Year 7 are prepared for both GCSEs and the IB Diploma.

Steadily throughout its change to the IB Diploma, over a decade ago, our students have excelled in both the IB and their GCSE results. Scarborough College is ranked among the top IB schools in the North and there is a good variety of subjects on offer, providing depth and breadth to the curriculum.

Year on year, well over 90 percent of Scardeburgians leaving manage to enrol with their first university of choice, including Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. In addition, the IB Diploma is an excellent pathway to top universities around the globe, which means every year, there are enrolments in North America and continental Europe.

YORKSHIRE GRIT AND CO-CURRICULAR

Ideally situated between the stunning North Yorkshire Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors, Co-curricular life is typified by a wealth of options. Prep School pupils enjoy Beach and Forest school and tend to keep their wellies at the school – just in case.

Starting in Year 7 and running for three years, Yorkshire Grit is the school’s jewel in the co-curricular

crown. Yorkshire Grit was designed to introduce boarders foreign to Yorkshire’s rugged and hardy nature, but also to harness and foster it in the pupils born on these shores. Yorkshire Grit is a combination of outdoor activities, courses and activities that stimulate the brain as well as the body.

Children in the Yorkshire Grit programme may have surfing lessons, leading to an official certificate by Surf England, one half term; and mindfulness lessons and activities the next half term. Yorkshire Grit was designed to build resilience and resourcefulness, though it is also an opportunity to make new friends and strengthen existing friendships.

Scarborough College pupils play sport every day and our fixtures calendar is packed with hockey, rugby, cricket, netball and a variety of other representative sports. Pupils can also represent their Academic Houses in many sports and through both the Cricket Centre of Excellence and Golf Centre of Excellence, there are links with professional sports clubs and world-class training.

The Enrichment Programme was designed to ensure that boarding pupils and day pupils spend time outside of the classroom and off the pitch, and so they can engage with one another in a variety of different activities. This programme includes a chess club, a debating team, a senior school choir, different sports activities and many others. WHAT FORCES CHILDREN SAY

What I like about the boarding is that during the weekends, you’re always doing something. We went shopping in Manchester and we do cinema trips but we also visited Heritage places like Castle Howard.

I feel that the people at Scarborough College understand our situation and especially the people in the house. Forces kids move around a lot and that can be really tough. Being here, knowing that you’re here for a while, it means you can make this place your home. It’s stable here and it’s the family away from other family.

The IB is great because it leaves you with the option to go and study, and live, in the places where you’ve lived. We lived in Germany for a while. I don’t know that I want to go back but with the IB Diploma, I know I can if I want to.

Hope, Year 12

It is very easy to make friends here. You don’t stand out and children don’t treat you differently because you’re a forces kid. The classrooms are small and the boarding house is small and that’s what I am used to. The atmosphere is very friendly. I love my boarding house because we are from so many different countries and that’s a little bit like me.

Joseph, Year 7

my dad played for the Army team, so I come from a real hockey family. Hockey and cricket are two important sports here.

You’re not always at school. Sounds funny but because we don’t board on the school site, you get to go home and you get to walk away. The staff in the house don’t talk about school so much, which is good. You just get to have normal conversations. The boarding structure is good; the way in which we mix prep time and activities. There’s a clear structure to the evening, so that I can focus on school work.

Riley, Year 10 and Head of Crews House

PASTORAL CARE

Perhaps a mention of contact with home, that we have a pastoral support network, reports sent home - phone report etc so parents feel they are ‘in touch’ with the school even when they are away ADMISSIONS

Scarborough College is a nonselective school and we start boarding at Year 7. Weekly and Flexi boarding places are available (subject to availability). To enquire, please visit our website www. scarboroughcollege.co.uk or speak to our Registrar, who will be happy to guide you through the next steps. We can also put you in touch with current Forces family, so they can share their experiences with Scarborough College.

QUOTE MR GUY EMMETT

I am often asked why Scarborough College is described as a family. There are a number of reasons why I feel we stand out. This year, we have doubled the number of teachers involved in boarding, meaning we have a 1:4 ratio of teaching staff to children, ensuring that we give outstanding pastoral and academic support. We have also invested over £4 million in our boarding houses and provide a beautiful home where children can study, be with their friends, cook together and take advantage of the evening activities. Boarding pupils have busy weekends and are taken on trips at no extra cost; whether it is visiting Harry Potter World, indoor ski trips or enjoy ice cream at the seaside, children will feel this is a home from home.
