It seems crazy that we are over half way through the year already and into the Summer Holidays. Hopefully the weather will improve over the next few weeks so you can get out and about and enjoy all that Norfolk has to offer. There are so many places not far from Marham to visit from the beautiful coastline, countryside walks and stately homes
to a number of children’s attractions across the county. Pop into the Community Support Hub to find out about the many different places that you can visit in the area. Lots of these places also offer discounts to Military Families as well. The next big event for RAF Marham is Families Day at the end of August so fingers crossed for good weather on the day.

Station Commander’s Foreword
It’s great to hear the sound of jet noise throughout the day – that’s the most obvious sign that things are getting busier every week at Marham. The Lightning Force goes from strength to strength, with a highly productive 617 Sqn detachment to Ex Northern Edge in Alaska in May. This was supported by elements from across the station, coming together to demonstrate once again the UK’s ability to project air power across the globe and sustain operations at reach. Meanwhile, 207 Sqn have been producing QFIs like they’re shelling peas! OK, two peas, but a great achievement that will have a big impact.
Back home, the station has been bustling as well, with the airfield open almost every weekend through June. Well done to all those Ops, ATC, Logs and support staff who went above and beyond to keep the airfield operating – even VASS has been busy! There was a fantastic showing from RAF Marham at the Royal Norfolk Show in June; special mentions go to Alison Childerhouse and Sgt Nina Lines for their amazing work to make the RAF Village and Sunset Ceremony a success. We’ve had a great turn-out at recent CO’s Cup
events and a highly successful Health and Wellbeing Day with a vibrant social at the Grafton Club that night. Let’s do more of these social and sports events – it’s what we need to balance our busy work lives.
Over summer there will be some disruption to the heating system, with possible impact to hot water. I make no apology for this; it’s essential maintenance work in our central boiler house and I’m also directing an overhaul of every radiator on camp over summer. We’re doing this now to put ourselves in the best possible position ahead of the winter heating season, when we really need those heating systems to work.
If you haven’t already done so, make sure you sign up for your Families & Friends Day tickets. It’s the biggest event on our annual calendar and this year we’re going to make it bigger and better than ever. But we’ll also remember that we still have lots of people deployed around the world (especially from 93 EAS!), so that day will also be for all those families left behind to really feel involved and have a great day out.

Op OBVIATE and ‘Easy Elsie’
The aircraft, factory number NF-920, was manufactured by the Austin Motor Company at Longbridge, Birmingham and left the factory on 12 August 1944 for delivery to the Royal Air Forces Bomber Command for placement at No. 617 Squadron in Lossiemouth.
There it was designated KC-E and named Easy Elsie by its crew.
Easy Elsie was one of the British bombers in a squadron from two bomber squadrons, which carried out the second attempt to sink the anchored German battleship Tirpitz in Northern Norway by aerial bombardment with heavy bombers. Tirpitz was at this time off Håkøya near Tromsø, where she was anchored in a depth of about 15 meters, having been damaged by bombs in the Alta fjord in Finnmark on 15 September 1944.
On the 29th October 1944. A total of 37 bombers from No. 6 and No. 617 Squadrons, without fighter escort, took off at 01:00L from Lossiemouth. They flew in formation over Norway and continued over the mountain range into Sweden at Tärna and then flew north over the Suorva dam.
The weather was clear, but just before the aircraft arrived at the Tromsø fjord, it was swept into a low-lying, dense cloud bank. The aircraft blindly dropped its Tallboy bomb, which, like
the others, missed the target. However, in a further air raid a few weeks later, on 12 November 1944, Tirpitz was hit, and the battleship capsized and was irreparably damaged.
Easy Elsie was hit by anti-aircraft shrapnel during the attack, which immediately knocked out one of the aircraft’s four engines along with some hydraulic functions and damaged the radio equipment. Before the return, Easy Elsie was hit once more, causing a second engine to stop and the aircraft to run out of fuel. Bomb hatches and landing gear were deployed, stuck in the deployed position which created troublesome air resistance. The pilot, Fg Off Daniel Carey then decided to fly to Sweden to make an emergency landing.
With broken navigation equipment, the aircraft had difficulty orienting itself, but ended up over Porjus, where it circled a couple of laps over the community. Outside the community above Stora Lulevatten, armaments and other loose equipment were thrown out to lighten the aircraft before
it landed at 11:50L with almost no fuel left on the Käimutjegge bog, 7 km northwest of Porjus.
Upon landing, the aircraft bounced 75 meters and banked 175 meters before the aircraft’s landing gear went down into the marsh. The aircraft came to a halt and first stood on its nose, then fell back onto its belly. With its fuel tanks almost empty, it did not catch fire. The pilot injured a knee on landing, but the others were relatively unharmed.
After landing, the crew destroyed the aircraft and set it on fire with the remains of the fuel.
The wreckage burned out from the driver’s cabin to the hold. Although Carey is reported to have sustained a minor injury, all the crew survived the landing and were temporarily interned by the Swedish authorities before being returned to England.
Easy Elsie was the only bomber of 37 lost in the raid.

New Chief of the Air Staff
RAF Marham hosted the new Chief of the Air Staff at the station at the beginning of June.
After opening a new tea bar for 15 Squadron, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton KCB FREng, briefed personnel along with members of RAF Senior Leadership Team, Air Marshal Harvey Smyth CB OBE DFC Air & Space Commander, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Richard Maddison OBE MA and Warrant Officer of the RAF WO Murugesvaran
Life at RAF Marham
In order to dispel myths and provide a first-hand explanation of what life is like at RAF Marham and 93(Expeditionary Armament) Squadron specifically, members of the Sqn visited RAF Cosford where the next generation of Armament engineers are currently in training.
Taking the opportunity to present to all instructors too, the trainees were briefed on what daily Sqn life is like, opportunities for UK based and foreign deployments, as well as what life is like at RAF Marham, including the plans for newly built single living accommodation.
Warrant Officer 93(EA) Sqn, who accompanied the visit, also took along a group of junior aviators who then briefed all trainees as peer to peers; it was hoped that this informal discussion would give the best and most valued feedback of what life is like on Stn, and on the Sqn.
‘One of my primary goals is to make sure that the lived experience on 93(EA) Sqn for all it’s members is as good as it can be; this starts with getting the right people on the Sqn from the outset. 93(EA) Sqn is a fast paced organisation based on a dynamic, equally fast past Stn; dispelling myths and making people aware of the great opportunities that are available at RAF Marham, and the Service in general is what is hoped will be achieved by this visit to RAF Cosford.’

Warrant Officer Ian who led the visit said;
RAF TRIUMPH AGAINST THE ARMY!
This is the third year the Army have invited chefs from the Royal Air Force to compete alongside them at their annual catering competition Ex ARMY SUSTAINER 23.
Held at Prince William of Gloucester barracks, Grantham, Ex ARMY SUSTAINER offers chefs the chance to be creative with various cooking classes using the Operational Field Catering System (OFCS).
Three chefs from Catering Flight, RAF Marham volunteered to enter the competition:
AS1 Gurung – previously entered and won the competition in 2021, entered the Vegan Skills class where he had to prepare, cook, and present two plates of a Vegan dish in a 30 Minute period, AS1 Gurung cooked a coconut, saffron & lime risotto with curried Jack fruit and sauteed Okra, placing 3rd out of 6 competitors that entered.
AS1 Barratt - entering this competition for the first time and only his 2nd catering competition entered Open Poultry Skills where he had 40 mins to prepare, cook and present two plated poultry dishes. AS1 Barratt when back to his Caribbean roots and cooked honey and cinnamon glazed jerk chicken with crushed sweet potato, pickled vegetables finished with a rum sauce.
AS2 Rose – arriving at the Catering Flight, RAF Marham from trade training five days prior to this competition, this was the first time in any competition. She was asked
to step in to replace another chef who was unavailable and after agreeing entered the Junior Skills challenge where she had to produce two plated portions of Kedgeree. The recipe was supplied by the judges which had to be followed precisely. This class was judged on the chef skills and knowledge of the recipe. AS2 Rose won overall which is a fantastic and welldeserved achievement.
There were 4 RAF chefs at this competition who all did remarkably well, taking some accolades of the Army chefs. The next catering competition ahead is Ex JOINT CATERER 23 where individuals and teams from Tg19 will take on their counterparts from the Royal Navy and the Army to be crowned best service overall.

The Haven
Not exactly the most comfortable place.
Every time I walked into that office, I felt demoralised. It was a dark and dingy room and I felt so alone. If I heard footsteps or voices nearby I would panic that someone would walk in whilst I was exposed.
This was not the experience I imagined I’d face when returning to work after maternity leave.
Fuelled by my passion and my experience, I pushed to create a space available to all mothers to use when they return to work. I joined the Women in Defence (WiD) Cttee and started discussions about establishing a breastfeeding/expressing room that would be made available to all personnel.
This would provide a safe, clean, and comfortable place for women to be able to breastfeed (BF) or express without worry or stress. Many do not have the ability to go home or even have a clean environment to express.
Some individuals may find it hard to discuss these types of topics with their line managers, especially if they are male. The added worry of how their colleagues see their choices about how they feed their child, and the fact that they will need time away from work to express, can be detrimental on their decision to continue breastfeeding.
By creating The Haven, I want to address the stigma that comes with mothers who breastfeed, especially past the age of 6-12 months. It is completely natural, and there are many health benefits for mum and child who continue to BF. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and NHS recommends breastfeeding up to at least the age of 2 and beyond.
On 05 Jul 22, RAF Marham’s Station Commander, Gp Capt Marr, signed up to the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme, meaning that as a unit we are accepting and welcoming of breastfeeding mothers.
Fast forward to 23 May 23, Gp Capt Wigglesworth and Wg Cdr Portlock opened the first Breastfeeding and Wellness Room at RAF Marham. The Haven is located within the Logs Sqn and is for everyone, not just mothers. It’s a place to go to when individuals may need time away from a stressful environment or to speak with someone in private.
RAF Marham’s WiD Cttee are really keen to set up multiple spaces across the unit to support individuals returning to work (RtW), so please watch out for more rooms popping up around unit. Or if you have an area that you know would be ideal, please get in touch with AS1 Saxby or Fg Off Bertuzzi

The 2 aircraft types conducted Dissimilar Air Combat Training where the pilots went head to head in simulated close air to air combat. This training gave the pilots the opportunity to put their aircraft through their paces whilst also cementing the interoperability between the 2 aircraft types.
The Typhoons landed at RAF Marham and based themselves at the 617 Squadron site, where IX(B) Squadron had previously resided when they were based at RAF Marham as a Tornado GR4 Squadron. Both IX(B) Squadron and 617 Squadron have a long history between them and indeed a rivalry that started back in 1944 when both squadrons flew Lancaster Bombers armed with Tallboy bombs. Their target was the German battleship Tirpitz located in the Tromso Fjord in Germany. The Lancaster’s dropped their Tallboy bombs with 3 hitting their target causing the battleship to sink rapidly. The sinking of the Tirpitz marked the end of Germany’s Naval War in Northern Waters as Hitler had lost the last influential ship of his surface battle fleet. The question was ‘Which squadron dropped the bomb that sunk the Tirpitz?’ Both squadron’s laid claim to this accolade which started the long running rivalry that still remains today.

‘Deliver Battle Winning Air Power for Current and Future Operations’
Last month RAF Marham hosted 2 Typhoons from IX(B) Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth, to participate in a training exercise with F-35B Lightning aircraft from 617 Squadron.
Wg Cdr Stew Campbell, Officer Commanding 617 Squadron said, “It was great to welcome our colleagues from IX(B) Squadron to RAF Marham last week to take part in Dissimilar Air Combat Training sorties which offered valuable experience to the pilots flying both types of aircraft. This is the first time that IX(B) Squadron has returned to RAF Marham since it disbanded as a Tornado squadron and, whilst the friendly rivalry between the 2 squadrons continues, it was put to one side once airborne as we demonstrated the interoperability and fighting force of the UK Combat Air Force.”
For IX (B) Squadron, the training was also an opportunity to practice Agile Combat Employment. Operating away from their home station at Lossiemouth meant the Squadron had to work without access to Typhoonspecific support.
Squadron Leader Declan Monaghan, IX (B) Squadron, said,

“Dissimilar Air Combat Training against F-35s is valuable because it gives us the chance to learn more about the F-35 and gain a better understanding of how Typhoon and F-35 can integrate and operate together.
Basing ourselves at Marham also allowed us to train for scenarios when we might have to demonstrate increased flexibility and resilience by operating away from Typhoon’s facilities at Lossiemouth and Coningsby.”

of Horatio Nelson Commemoration
On Friday 26th May at Burnham Thorpe a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the birth place of Horatio Nelson. The plaque was a replacement as the original one, that had been in situ for over 60 years, had unfortunately been stolen. The owner of the property, Nina Plumbe wanted to ensure that
Nelson’s birthplace continued to be marked so that visitors to Burnham Thorpe knew where he was born. She contacted the Army and Navy Club who offered to fund the replacement plaque. The plaque was unveiled by Rear Admiral (Rtd) Jonathan Westbrook CBE in front of Commodore Rob Bellfield, the Naval Regional Commander,

Sadly both Flight Sergeant Aaron and Squadron Leader Bazelgette died during WWII and were awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. Flight Sergeant Aaron was flying a Stirling aircraft when it was hit killing his navigator and injuring other crew members. Three engines were hit, the windscreen shattered and the front and rear turrets were put out of action causing the aircraft to become unstable and difficult to control. Aaron himself was hit by a bullet causing a number of injuries. Despite being unable to talk and extremely weak, Aaron guided his crew members towards Bone airfield in Algeria to ensure that his crew didn’t fall into enemy hands. Nine hours after a safe landing at Bone airfield Flight Sergeant Aaron died of exhaustion. Sqn Ldr Bazelgette was flying a Lancaster Bomber towards a V-1 Rocket site near Paris when the aircraft was hit by flak on the starboard wing setting it on fire and knocking out both engines. Despite the damage Bazelgette continued on course to mark the target
before turning towards allied lines. Just 12 minutes later the port-inner engine failed. With two injured crew on board Sqn Ldr Bazelgette ordered the remaining four crew to abandon the stricken aircraft. Bazelgette remained on board with the injured crew and prepared to crash land in a field just north of Senantes. The aircraft landed but burst into a huge fireball that killed the three on board instantly.
The memorial to these two airmen also fittingly celebrates all the people and crews who were based at Downham Market, with silhouettes of the squadrons and aircraft that operated there. It was designed and built by local engineer Jonathan Horton.
The project was a collaboration between the village of Bexwell and the wider area, local RAF Association branches, and the current RAF Marham personnel. Representatives from each of them attended the rededication service.
On Sunday 9 July a short service took place at St Mary's Church Bexwell to rededicate a new memorial to Victoria Cross recipients, Flight Sergeant Aaron and Squadron Leader Bazelgette who both flew from RAF Downham Market.

What a fantastic few days we had at the Royal Norfolk Show last month.
The rain on the Thursday did nothing to dampen the spirits and we still had a steady flow of visitors to the Military/RAF Village. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase a number of the different trades that we have at RAF Marham from Catering, Regiment, and Fire Section to Survival
Equipment, Medics, RAF Police and Military Working Dogs and also our industrial partners, BAE and Rolls Royce. The STEM stand was a firm favourite with queues throughout the day waiting to ‘fly’ the simulators and of course the Hawk was a great drawer to bring visitors to the stand.

Women’s Football Tournament
The girls were gearing up in the changing rooms, heads focused on the matches ahead.
A motivational speech was given by our captain in the changing rooms rallying everyone together. We headed out in force, heading for the football pitch where we were to battle.
To begin with we started on some drills, passing back and forth to each other, shooting into the goal and forming a stronger team-manship. We could see from across the pitch a group of green and a group of orange approaching... the opposing teams.
Nerves began to heighten and excitement began to ring. Our first match commenced. We played both defence and offence in a strong and powerful manner, forcing our way through the opponent's defences and scoring our first win. The wins followed on from there, in our first match we won 4 to nil to us. Cheering and high fiving, the ladies exited the pitch after a brilliant first game.
We then had a chance to watch the following games, psyching out our opponent, finding their weaknesses and strengths allowing us to form a plan to oppose them.
However, this next team had saved their strength for us. It was a game like none we had played before. Both teams matched each other's strength. We changed tactic last minute and planned to get as many goals as possible in the first half... however, their defence was as powerful as ours. Sadly, by
chance, they scored a goal. The side line cheered us on none the less, keeping up our spirits, we persevered and defended our goal till the end. Our ladies took shots at the opposing goal, yet their defender was too quick. The game ended on a one to nil score to the opposing team.
We took the loss like champs, shook everyone's hands and congratulated the winning team followed by getting a group photo of all 3 teams together.
