Stn Cdr’s Foreword
Gp Capt Billy Cooper MA BA(Hons) RAF
IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE THIS SPRING ADDITION OF YOUR ONETOONE MAGAZINE WHICH SHOWCASES JUST WHAT INCREDIBLE WORK IS BEING DELIVERED ACROSS THE STATION’S WHOLE FORCE AND WIDER COMMUNITY.
It seems like a long time since Christmas and I’ve almost recovered from the Elf hat that Audra in the HiVE made me wear! The weather is most definitely on the turn and we know that Spring is here with the return of the Typhoon display and BBMF flying. This season will begin with excitement surrounding His Majesty the King’s Coronation, in which we will yet again see the Sovereign saluted by BBMF and a mass Typhoon formation (the details of which are a secret until the day!). Fingers crossed for the weather..
This last quarter has seen the cementing of the Lincolnshire Terminal Air Traffic Control Centre capability on Station, which has seen huge modernisation in the way we deliver those services and also broadened the reach of the Station out across all of Lincolnshire. The return of 12 Sqn (Leads the Field!) from another long winter period in the Middle East is also a welcome sight. They have been deployed in Qatar to
provide Air Policing to the FIFA World Cup furthering the deep relationship between the two nations of the Joint Squadron and then on exercise in Oman.
The war in Eastern Europe does not abate and RAF Coningsby continues to contribute to the international effort supporting Ukraine. A number of personnel are deployed alongside NATO allies both in the UK and overseas. This continued national effort is felt very keenly across the Station and I know we are all proud to be able to do our bit - not least 7FP Wing which also celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the RAF Regiment.
As I write this foreword, we are making the final preparations for the Freedom of Boston Parade which will be the first in 3 years. There are still many links such as this that we need to reforge following the COVID 19 pandemic and I will be focussing on not only engagement with our local community but also the families without whom RAF Coningsby would not be able to do what it does for our country. My thanks to all of you for making Coningsby what it is over the winter period and the continued success on operations. I look forward to seeing us all blossom and bloom as we migrate towards the summer and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Families Day on the 28th July!

“THE DAK” GETS PAMPERED BBMF C-47 DAKOTA
The BBMF C-47 Dakota – “The Dak” – will be missing from the BBMF hangar and from the skies around Coningsby this year whilst it undergoes a ‘Major’ maintenance programme with the Aircraft Restoration Company (ARCo) at Duxford.
The ‘Depth’ maintenance of the BBMF aircraft, including Major servicing, is carried out under contract, and is overseen by the BBMF Project Team, based at RAF Coningsby and led by the Chief Engineer, Group Captain Andy March.
BBMF C-47 Dakota ZA947 commenced its Major maintenance programme at Duxford on 10th October 2022 following protracted negotiations with the company that had delayed its input. After a pre-input weigh and engine inhibiting, the Dakota’s wings were removed to enable the aircraft to be located within the ARCo fabrication/ restoration hangar.
The BBMF Dakota has the longest interval between Majors of any of the BBMF aircraft (10 years); its last Major was conducted by ARCo/North East Airlines at Humberside Airport in 2010/11. An Ageing Aircraft Audit/Condition Survey carried out on the Dakota by QinetiQ in 2019/2020 provided evidence to the BBMF Project Team (PT) that there would probably be a significant amount of emergent work discovered during the inspection phase of the Major on ZA947, which is now 80 years old. The Condition Survey also led the PT to issue new policies on electrical wiring and mechanical interconnect systems that will be a substantial challenge for the ARCo technicians to implement. The electrical wiring surveys are also likely to reveal a large amount of work required.
The first significant task for the ARCo engineers was to remove the Majority of the Dakota’s access panels, the fuselage floor, fairings, wing tips, main and auxiliary fuel tanks, engine cowlings and flying control surfaces, so that zonal inspections and inspections of Structurally Significant Items could be carried out. These have now been completed and only 26 from 86
have been found to be fault free, with areas of corrosion apparent and some cracked panels and stringers also discovered. In addition, the condition of the Majority of the Dakota’s flying control cables and associated components means that they will need to be replaced.
It is precisely to uncover such wear and tear issues as these that the Majors on the BBMF historic aircraft are scheduled at the prescribed intervals and the results of the survey reports are not entirely unexpected. However, there is clearly a considerable amount of rectification and repair work
to be completed to return Dakota ZA947 to fully airworthy condition for the next 10 years of flying with the BBMF. The Dakota is, therefore, not expected to participate in the 2023 display season. It should, however, be flying again in time for the 2024 display season and will be appearing in a new colour scheme as a Dakota of South East Asia Command.
Whilst Dakota ZA947 is away for its Major servicing at Duxford, the BBMF has been providing hangarage in the Flight’s hangar at RAF Coningsby for C-47B Dakota IV KP220, which is now owned and operated by Aero
Legends. In return for assisting with its winter storage, the BBMF crews will be able to conduct pre-season training in the Aero Legends Dakota before they fly the Lancaster in 2023. KP220 was completed too late to fly operationally in the Second World War, being delivered to the RAF in June 1945. It served with 435 Squadron RCAF until March 1946 and then from 1947 with 24 Squadron RAF based at Bassingbourn, taking part in the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49. KP220 was retired from RAF service in November 1950 and became civilian-registered in June 1953.

A STEMAZING YEAR!
With the new year firmly now upon us, the RAF Coningsby STEM Team have most certainly not been resting on our laurels. We have already undertaken visits from schools as well as venturing out into our local community, where members of our team have continued to inspire young minds.
In the latter part of 2022, the STEM team certainly did not let up with visits to various schools and youth groups. There were also station visits including several virtual events, due to continued Covid restrictions. Now the restrictions have been lifted and life slowly returns to normality, RAF Coningsby STEM team have gained a renewed sense of motivation and gusto to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals, from Engineers to Scientists and Mathematicians.
Due to many of the STEM ambassadors being immensely busy following the festive period, it has been a big ask for personnel to run the activities we have booked into our calendar. However, thanks to our events manager, CT Jason Bradford, we have been able to undertake two school visits to in this first part of 2023: Lincoln Saint Christophers and University Academy Long Sutton. Lincoln Saint Christophers offered the opportunity for WO Parkinson and Cpl ‘Dickie’ Fuller to present an afternoon session of rocket designing, building and flying. The University Academy Long Sutton saw several groups of year 8 students introduced to the Mathematical intricacies of budgeting, designing and pitching ideas as well as costings with 3 of our fantastically enthusiastic STEM ambassadors with great motivation, success and ideas presented.
RAF Coningsby STEM team has also hosted students and teachers from Goole Academy. They were the winners of a national RAF Lego STEM competition, and the prize was a visit to an RAF Station. We were honoured to be the chosen Station to facilitate their prize giving by providing them a personalised tour of various areas of RAF Coningsby and gain an insight, into the daily routine, rarely seen by the general public.
Firstly, the students and teachers met with Wing Commander Kirby, the Station’s
Chief Engineer who had an engaging chat with the students and explained what we do as Engineers to produce our vast operational output. After this meeting the students met with our STEM team; Flt Lt Barnett (OIC STEM), WO Parkinson (Deputy OIC STEM), Chf Tech Bradford, Cpl Fuller and AS1(T) Leighton who had various activities and surprises for them throughout the day. These culminated in the students flying the Typhoon Simulator and learning how aircrew can gain flying experience synthetically. With much more to come over the coming year, our calendar is rapidly filling up and the STEM Committee continue to be immensely busy in the background, liaising with various Squadrons, Flights and Contract companies that we have on unit to be able to build the connections with our local schools and colleges. We are a small, but busy team, who are passionate and enthusiastic about what we do and in showcasing our various trades of which we would love for you to join the STEM Team and become part of such a fulfilling initiative.
Interested in becoming a STEM Ambassador?
If you wish to assist with this rewarding secondary duty, please do get in touch via email: AIR-CON-STEM@mod. gov.uk and we will be happy to see you add to the amazing STEM ambassadors currently representing RAF Coningsby, who continue to deliver events locally and nationally in support of RAF Youth & STEM.

12 SQUADRON ARE AT THE END OF A VERY BUSY 6-MONTH PERIOD.
Commencing in September 2022, the Squadron initially deployed to Qatar for Project THARIYAT and to assist the Qatari Emiri Air Force (QEAF) stand up their newly formed No 1 Typhoon Wing, part of their rapidly growing Fighter Wing. The crescendo moment of the previous three years since the Squadron’s reformation was in our sights with the showpiece, Operation SHADOWFOOT. This saw RAF and QEAF Typhoons providing air policing for the FIFA World Cup 2022 held in Qatar.
Despite the hard work, many of the Squadrons personnel were fortunate enough to experience the atmosphere of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar including attending several World Cup fixtures; even the France-England game (which we will not talk about!). The football fever was not just in Doha, an RAF v QEAF football game was played at Dukhan Air Base, with a narrow victory for the RAF of 7-2. This was one of the last events before many personnel (but not all – those aircraft still need guarding!) gratefully received stand down for the Festive Period.
Following a successful operation, the Squadron returned to Qatar to conclude Project THARIYAT. January 2023 saw a continuation of training sorties with QEAF, completing joint affiliation missions and focusing on airspace coordination. Away from the flying, Squadron personnel were given the opportunity to explore Doha with more social time and seeing the
local attractions, whether that be shopping, eating in one of the impressive malls or experiencing local culture such as Souq Waqif. It was an exciting time for the Squadron and its personnel and was a nice way to conclude the Qatar phase of the deployment before the next phase, the now long-standing annual Exercise MAGIC CARPET.
Exercise MAGIC CARPET 23 at Thumrait AB in Oman will conclude 12 Squadron’s deployment in the Middle East. The Typhoons, with support from RAF Voyager, conducted scenario-based sorties alongside our colleagues in the Royal Air Force of Oman as well as completing sorties with live weapons. It has been a very busy turn around for all trades, with a wide range including ASOS (FO), SES, GSS, 90SU and the Engineering Team deploying en-masse from Qatar to Oman. Deployment from the UK with 8 aircraft is no mean feat, never mind from Qatar
to Oman! Our Engineering Team were a massive asset to this deployment and without them we would not have been able to provide an operational output with tight turnrounds and armed aircraft.
Exercise MAGIC CARPET also allowed opportunities for downtime, allowing personnel to experience Force Development organised by the PTI. We spent the day exploring
the beautiful landscape of Oman, including the picturesque Wadi Dalbat and its waterfalls in the blistering heat whilst making friends with the local camel population at the same time! Although it has been a long 6 months, I believe I speak for everyone on the Squadron that we were all looking forward to getting home.
In summary, the 6 months were a fun and enjoyable experience in my short time on 12 Squadron, meeting plenty of new faces and even learning a little bit of Arabic along the way.
Shukran mae alsalama!

Stourton Woods – a venue with a difference!
If you’ve not heard or visited Stourton Woods before you’re missing out! Based on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds near Horncastle and described as a ‘hidden gem’ they are hosting monthly public events throughout 2023.
Primarily a working arable and red deer farm, the owners have created a venue on the historic Stourton Estate, steeped in woodland, parkland and lakes. The safari tent hosts weddings and private parties, and the events are innovative. This is a unique venue… drive into the woodland parking area and you cannot help but spot the roundhouse hidden in the woods. This agricultural building houses the red deer during the winter and in summer provides an amazing covered venue space for artisan markets, festivals, rallies, product launches, and has potential for so much more!
If you fancy getting active, the events starting at the end of April are geared towards mountain bikers and orienteering explorers, (no experience necessary) just come along and have a go. Then follows the Lincolnshire Makers Spring Artisan Market on Sunday 7th May with over 80 local businesses sharing their talents plus deer safaris are on offer - not to be missed! The owners have always been keen to support charities and are hosting a fundraiser for the Air Ambulance on 18th May. Here you can discover miles of waymarked self-guided trails across the beautiful estate and enjoy a cuppa and home-made light refreshments too.
The full diary of events throughout the year are published on their website www.stourtonestates.co.uk so it’s well worth making a visit or noting the dates in your diary.
If you’d like to hold your wedding reception here or are interested in hiring the venue for a larger event please get in touch, contact@stourtonestates.co.uk or 01507 578236 and the team will help you make it happen.
With UK Typhoon’s latest version of weapon system software being developed, 41 TES were tasked with testing its many capabilities prior to its release to the front line. Coupled with several Sqn pilots indulging in the bright lights of Vegas supporting Ex RED FLAG, the home team have been all hands to the pump ensuring our intense trials programme has remained on track.
41 Sqn also had the privilege of taking part in a significant milestone by conducting the first air-to air refuelling mission utilising a blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and conventional jet fuel. Witnessed by media personnel onboard the Voyager, Flt Lt ‘Hicky’ Hickinbotham was at the controls of the Typhoon for this remarkable achievement as the Royal Air Force progresses towards increasing their use of sustainable fuel.
We’re very proud to announce that one of our own, FLt Lt ‘Soaps’ Davison was selected for the ‘In-Form of the month’ award for January for her proposal for better management of the MIDS BU2 Crypto Process. ‘In-Form of the month’ is awarded to the In-Form that has shown an excellent idea for improvement, researched diligently or will be highly beneficial to the Station/ Section. Well done Soaps and enjoy your tickets to Kinema in the Woods!
Unfortunately, however, we do have to pay tribute and show respects to one of our own. WO Peter Hale, who was the last living 41 Sqn Veteran has sadly passed at the age of 100. Flying the mighty Spitfire and Hurricane, WO Hale amassed 1,135 flying hours in total throughout his flying career across multiple operations. A true 41 Sqn legend! Rest Easy Mr Hale. Pre-Deployment Training
With Op SHADER rapidly approaching for 3(F) Sqn we have taken advantage of some exceptional engineering at our main operating base, RAF Coningsby, to complete a multitude of professional flying qualifications for our Fighter Pilots. Flt Lt Bolland, Ogden and Lt Reid RN have recently completed their combat ready workup packages and are now fully productive members of the Typhoon force. Flt Lt Travers and Richardson have also successfully completed their pairs lead upgrades, qualifying them to lead junior pilots in future missions. In addition, our United States Navy exchange officer Lt Hanrahan, callsign Sabretooth, is the forces newest four-ship lead, a significant achievement.
Further afield in the Falkland Islands, Flt Lt Travers has taken over from our own Flt Lt Harbridge at RAF Mount Pleasant in a 6-week deployment south of the equator. Operating
201st Tactical Fighter Squadron
The 201st Tactical Fighter Sqn of the Japanese Air SelfDefence Force recently visited 3(F) Sqn as part of an enduring partnership between the two sister squadrons. The partnership began in 1927 when Lt Yohsir Komei, of the Japanese Imperial Navy, joined 3(F) Sqn as the first of two Japanese exchange officers to serve within the RAF.
During their time in the UK the Officer Commanding the 201st, a 201st Sqn Pilot and their Engineering Officer enjoyed testing themselves up to 9G in the centrifuge at RAF Cranwell.
with RAF Voyager and A400M aircraft, alongside other Eurofighter Typhoons, provides a great training opportunity to develop force integration and interoperability. Operating over 8,000miles from the UK, this brings its own challenges and rewards.
They also participated in flying the Typhoon in the simulator and visiting units throughout the Air Force such as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. OC 201 Sqn enjoyed a passenger flight in a Typhoon where he experienced low level flying in the Lake District and 1 vs 1 air combat.
The recent announcement of the Japanese - United Kingdom partnership in the Global Combat Air Programme, in addition to the easing of COVID restrictions, has strengthened the relationship between both Squadrons and 3(F) Sqn hopes to make a reciprocal visit to Japan in November 2023.
Arrivals and Departures
3(F) Sqn are proud to welcome several new members to the family. Flt Lt Turrell is our new QWI and is a very valuable addition to the Sqn. Flt Lt Ogden and Lt Reid are our newest junior pilots; Lt Reid is the last Royal Navy pilot to join the Typhoon force and is destined for the F-35 Lightning II. Flt Lt Bell is another addition who is training with us and follows in the footsteps of his father who flew the Harrier for 3(F) Sqn in the 1990s.
We are also proud to welcome our new Junior Engineering Officer, Flt Lt Danby, who is taking over from Flt Lt Cowie and has large shoes to fill. Flt Lt Harbridge is leaving the Typhoon force to instruct Elementary Flying Training on the Prefect T1 at RAF Cranwell. Although not a new joiner, worthy of mention is Flt Lt Travers who has recently been selected for the next Qualified Weapons Instructor Course, the RAF version of Top Gun, a tremendous achievement.

7 RAF FORCE PROTECTION WG (7 RAF FP WG) HAS CONTINUED TO
EMPLOYED ACROSS THE FULL SPECTRUM OF FP TASKINGS.
This has included contribution to Global Operations, as well as international delivery of Defence Activity such as support to multinational Exercises and the provision of international ShortTerm Training Teams.
In addition to being busy operationally, 7 RAF FP Wg HQ and the Air Land Integration Cell (ALIC), joined the wider RAF Regiment in commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the RAF Regiment.
Since its establishment by Royal Warrant in 1942, The RAF Regiment has fought in all the major campaigns of the Second World War and since then has served in the Middle East, Far East, Africa, globally during the Cold War, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
To commemorate the formation and the history of the RAF Regiment, and encourage ethos, esprit de corps and a sense of our history amongst RAF Regiment and wider RAF
personnel, 7 RAF FP Wg HQ celebrated the Corps 80th Anniversary with a social event in the RAF Coningsby Officers’ Mess. All RAF Regiment Gunners and Officers stationed at RAF Coningsby met to raise a glass for this momentous occasion.
The event was well attended by RAF Regiment personnel and other personnel from across the station. The celebrations allowed for the Corps pitted history to be shared between all personnel and encouraged rapport to be built across the Station, whilst providing an increased awareness of the achievements of the RAF Regiment of the last 80 Years, commemorating the achievements, sacrifice and ongoing efforts of its predecessors and past and present personnel.
In addition to the celebrations, 7 RAF FP Wg HQ and the ALIC supported and raised awareness of the Centurion Fund and the Benevolent Fund. Gunners and Officers of both Units undertook a charity lifting event to raise money. The challenge, to lift the weight of two fully loaded RAF Typhoons - 60,000kg. Teams containing five RAF Regiment personnel completed this challenge, with each team lifting 10,000kg.
In order to lift the prescribed weight and complete the challenge, each team member completed a variety of gruelling exercises including bench press,
squat, military press, deadlift, dummy drag, and jerry can farmers walk. They raised £10, 000, which was shared between the two funds.
The RAF Regiment has seen many changes over the course of the last 80 years. It remains the heart of the RAF’s fighting spirit, it dominates the Complex Air Ground Environment to protect Air and Space Power from all threats. Its junior ranks remain the sole Trade within the RAF with a direct close combat role. The RAF Regiment continuously operates to prepare, maintain and protect the RAF’s ability to fight.

The PTI’s at Coningsby have taken a new approach to their role, they have been out on Station handing out leaflets and speaking to people about what we can offer them and how it will benefit them. These actions have had fantastic feedback from people, particularly from being visible on station. In total 50 people are now working with the PTIs around transforming their health & wellbeing. PEd staff have been tasked to find five station personnel of varying ability. They will then
provide them with a bespoke training package that will help the individual achieve their aims efficiently and safely. The priority is those who are struggling with fitness tests or those struggling for motivation. The benefits of having one to one sessions are that they are personal, you can establish better relationships and learn more about the individual. Being able to identify barriers is a huge part of establishing a training programme. The usual barriers we find station wide are shifts/time, LM permission and accessibility of classes.
To optimise delivery on Sqns, TDF and Ped Flt sought funding from the central fund for two electric bikes. This allows for delivery onto Sqns whenever it is convenient for them, and they have a short break in the day. The bikes carry kit such as Kettlebells, dumbbells,

Throughout the year there are various AT/FD activities that personnel can enrol and participate in. These vary from week-long, three-day and one-day. Examples include International Bomber Command Centre, National Space Centre, Duxford Imperial War Museum, National Memorial Arboretum, Bletchley Park and Padre walking sessions. The AT activities consist of walking, canoeing, Indoor climbing, and mountain biking which run from April – November. There are a whole host of Eagle Schemes available for personnel to attend. These can be applied for via a link on the RAF homepage. PEd staff are available to offer advice to those who want to organise their own AT/FD.

At both Frithville and New York Primary Schools we know that children learn best when they are happy and secure. We work hard to create a safe, caring and nurturing environment which encourages the children, but also the staff and to thrive as a community.
In December 2018 both Primary Schools converted to academies and became part of the Horncastle Education Trust, along with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School and Banovallum School, and then in December 2022, Huttoft Primary School joined our family of schools . We have a Local Governing Body over the two schools comprising of local authority representatives, teaching staff, parents and community governors from both schools. Both schools are improving schools and were graded as “Good” in our last Ofsted inspections in February and March 2017.
We believe that every child has an entitlement to a broad and balanced education. We are inclusive schools, which means that we receive children from all cultures and faiths and with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. We are committed to enabling all our children to achieve high standards of attainment and to reach their potential whatever their abilities.
The aim is to make the curriculum as child centred as possible, making learning stimulating and fun. We understand that all children are different and we try to find out how each child learns best. We believe the quality of learning is a direct result of the quality of teaching and constantly strive to improve. We have a commitment to working in partnership with parents, families and carers, and the collaborative schools in our cluster. Ours is a community school and we are developing a network of support for our families based here at the school.
We are mindful of the future and aim to prepare our children for the challenges of life yet to come. As well as equipping them with basic skills, we endeavour to develop in their personal qualities such as creativity, resourcefulness, independence and adaptability to enable them to become happy, successful and self-sufficient citizens of the 21st Century.

JET
GRAB LIFE BY THE HANDLEBARS.
Are you an avid cyclist, or perhaps you enjoy the occasional ride?
Why not join JETRide on Sunday 24th September at RAF College Cranwell, where you can cycle 60 or 100 miles across the Lincolnshire countryside and help us raise vital funds as you pedal?
Lincs links
Having taken place in Bomber County since 2019 (where our first programmes were delivered in 2012), this year’s JETRide sees our routes become designated RAF Heritage Trails.
Each route will take in some of Lincolnshire’s most iconic RAF sites, past and present, where riders can learn more about the region’s rich military history.

Giving back
A huge thank you to the team at RAF Coningsby, and indeed to RAF personnel across Lincolnshire, who have helped JET deliver some unforgettable Blue Skies sessions this year.
As well as some fantastic sessions here at Coningsby, our local students have also enjoyed a visit to the Red Arrows at RAF Waddington where they met the pilots, spent time learning about the planes from the engineering team, and were amazed by the level of detail and planning which goes into every display.
Plans afoot
JET has also been working hard with our volunteers here at RAF Coningsby to plan a fantastic itinerary of future visits, including an upcoming bush
crafting session, and learning how to plan and operate in a busy RAF kitchen. We are now looking forward to starting our partnership with BAE Systems here at Coningsby this term, where we’ll be delivering STEM sessions with their team on the base.
The purpose of our sessions are twofold; firstly, to build teamwork, leadership and communication skills in our students who are often very under-confident when they first join our programmes. Secondly, to allow our students to think more positively about their futures by linking them with role-models from across the RAF and beyond, who help them to understand the breadth of potential careers which they may never have considered and realise that nothing is out of their reach.
JET involved
We’re always on the lookout for more brilliant volunteers to support our work at RAF Coningsby and help to motivate and inspire our students.
We recently spoke to an RAF Coningsby volunteer, John, who highlighted how much he benefits from his experiences:

“
If you want to be involved in directly improving people’s lives both in the here and now and in the future, then I would thoroughly recommend volunteering with JET. It’s also improved my ability to think on my feet and be flexible!”

Statistically, the third Monday in January is the gloomiest day of the year, with Christmas long in the past and the short days and long nights of January firmly upon us. But not at the TATCC!
Attracting attention from far and wide across the station, the inaugural Lincolnshire TATCC Brew Monday, organised by Flt Lt Laura Ryder, was a resounding success. The TATCC pulled together an impressive spread with a myriad of baked and shop bought treats, ranging from extravagant caramel cookie bars to the humble Gingerbread person; all in aid of the Samaritans Brew Monday campaign.
The simple yet effective campaign encourages us to reach out and connect with one another over something as simple as a cuppa. Samaritans are there to provide emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide. The money raised in the TATCC was donated to the Boston
branch of the Samaritans to best help people in the local area.
Elsewhere, the high operational tempo continues across the three radar banks, as large-scale multi-national exercises approach in the coming months. The groundwork is being put in place for Coningsby to host the Royal Saudi Air Force, with Waddington hosting delegations from Belgium, Finland, India and Turkey for the first iteration of EX COBRA WARRIOR in 2023.
Following on from a busy display season in 2022, TATCC support continues into 2023 as RAFAT, BBMF and the Typhoon display go through their training through to their PDA. A new temporary danger area was established over RAF Syerston to allow RAFAT to train away from their traditional area over Scampton, prior to their overseas training.
A challenging yet rewarding period in the TATCC with a lot more to come over the course of 2023.

MALCOLM’S STORY: “WHY I AM LEAVING A GIFT IN MY WILL”
“Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is extremely important to agricultural workers; the helicopter a welcome sight as it appears like a yellow knight in shining armour flying across the fields to help a farmer in distress. This is why I am leaving them a gift in my Will.”
Lincoln-born Malcolm Haywood comes from a farming family, and over the years Mike can recall many instances of farmworkers being injured in agricultural accidents and needing the support of LNAA.
He says: “One time, a farmer friend got caught in a potato machine. But the Air Ambulance got there just in time, treated him at the farm and transported him to hospital. It could have been such a different outcome had they not been there.”
Malcolm worked as an aerial crop sprayer operating across the Boston fenlands. His knowledge of the industry spurred him to write a book, entitled ‘Under the Wire’, it is dedicated to the crop spraying operators of yesteryear. Profits from sales have raised over £2,000 for LNAA.
Malcolm says: “Me and my wife want to know our money will make a difference to someone. LNAA is vital to our rural communities, and the work it does means a lot to us because we have been involved in aviation and farming all our lives. What better cause to leave a legacy to, than to something so worthwhile that is on your doorstep.”
“Nearly a third of LNAA work is funded by people who have left a gift in their Will and in the last year alone, donations of this kind have paid for over 400 life-saving missions. By remembering Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance in your Will, you will be helping to ensure that they can be there for critically ill and injured people when they are needed most.
