Stn Cdr’s Foreword

Succeed Today – As is evident throughout the articles in this Autumn edition, RAF Coningsby personnel continue to deliver essential and extraordinarily successful operational effects, globally 24/7, and since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, never before have our endeavours been more internationally visible or valuable. The Station remains at the very forefront of operations and its phenomenal output has put the agility, responsiveness and decisive nature of Combat Air on the centre stage once more in Defence. From the defence of UK Airspace and that of our Overseas Territories, essential and enduring support to OP SHADER, to deployed NATO Air Policing and airfield defence at one of our strategic overseas bases, the exceptionally talented Whole Force personnel of RAF Coningsby have never missed a beat and continue to excel.

Innovate for Tomorrow – We have and continue to lead the field in ASTRA initiatives and broader change programmes. We never stand still and are constantly looking for ways to improve both professionally and the support we provide members of the wider RAF Coningsby family. Our recent creation of the RAF’s inaugural Terminal Air Traffic Control Centre and our incessant drive

to improve the facilities and services provided, for both those at home and deployed, run throughout the articles of this edition.

Finally, but most importantly, Value our People – none of the outstanding achievements above are possible without the dedicated and outrageously talented individuals that work on the Station and it is humbling for me to be part of such a high preforming team. From thoroughly well-deserved State awards, invaluable support to families of those deployed, to celebrations and events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the sense of pride and belonging is readily apparent throughout this publication and is a true testament to the character and cohesion of our workforce who epitomise our motto ‘Loyalty Binds Me’.

In signing off, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone I have had the honour to serve with during my time as Station Commander of this exceptional Station. We have a well-earned reputation for success, which is wholeheartedly due to the quality of our people. I therefore have absolutely no doubt this track record will endure long after my departure.

In April, 3(F) Sqn deployed to Romania as part of a NATO mission conducting enhanced Air Policing and enhanced Vigilance Activities. The squadron were tasked with carrying out combat air patrols and QRA duties as well as exercising alongside international allies. Over the duration of the deployment 3(F) Sqn flew over 325 sorties, totalling 850 hours of flight time – more than 3 times that of any previous UK NATO mission in Romania.

In mid-July the Squadron was invited to take part in a flypast over Bucharest to celebrate Romanian Aviation and Air Force Day. The annual celebration includes a flypast of the Monument to Heroes of the Air and included a mixture of Romanian Air Force fast jets, multi-engine and rotary assets, as well as representatives from the Italian Air Force.

At the end of July, we formally handed over duties to the Canadian military before returning in style with a formation recovery back at Coningsby. After landing, the crews were met by families and friends on the Squadron to celebrate their return. We will now undergo a period of leave before focusing on regeneration and aircrew upgrades until the end of the year.

This summer a number of key squadron personnel have moved onto new roles within the RAF. Flt Lt Walker leaves after a very successful return to the front line and Flt Lt Eatherton and Flt Lt Shawyer have been selected to become instructors on 29 Sqn, the typhoon OCU.

New faces on the Squadron include a new Flight Commander, Sqn Ldr ‘Bruce’ Forsyth and Flt Lt Rob Thomas who both join us following secondments overseas. WO

Glen Hadgraft returns to 3(F) after a three-year break, taking over as the Squadron mentor. We wish all new and former Squadron personnel the best of luck in their new roles.

In early July, 3(F) Sqn sent a detachment of aircraft and personnel from Romania to take part in Exercise Anatolian Eagle at Konya Airbase in Türkiye. Joining in the second week of the 2-week exercise,

Building on the amazing success of their first book, Bransby Horses is delighted to announce the launch of their second.

Pudding’s Christmas Miracle told the story of an abandoned Shetland pony and was a huge hit when it launched in 2020, selling over 2,500 copies.

Two years on and the sequel, Pudding’s Picnic Panic, builds on the educational style tale by teaching readers about the importance of not feeding horses you don’t know.

Sally Crawford, Executive Director of Engagement and Income Generation, said:

“Children and parents seem to have really taken to these books. As well as being a lovely story for little ones to get lost in they also carry an important message about equine welfare.

“With the summer holidays just around the corner, more families will be venturing out on walks and may want to feed horses they come across – through Pudding’s story we’re urging people to not feed without the owner’s permission, as it could do more harm than good. “

“We hope everyone enjoys Pudding’s new book as much as the first. Once again, all profits help us continue with the welfare and rescue work we do out in the community.

“Whether you decide to buy the book, sponsor an equine or make a donation, you’ll make a positive difference and for that we’re truly grateful.”

SET OUT RAF RESERVE OPPORTUNITIES AT SOUTHPORT AIRSHOW.

Flying Officer Jane Shepherd, Media Operations, 611 Squadron

Southport Airshow provided an eyecatching platform for members of 611 Squadron to promote opportunities in the RAF Reserves on its doorstep.

Personnel from the Sqn, which is based at RAF Woodvale in neighbouring Formby, spoke to visitors at the show about life in the Forces.

The team from 611, who were joined by the Northern Reserve Support Wing, had a constant flow of enquiries from people looking to explore the opportunity to work in rewarding and demanding roles alongside full-time Regular colleagues.

Based at RAF Woodvale, and with engineering facilities in Aintree, 611 Squadron draws in personnel from across the North West.

They train in air & space operations, intelligence, ground engineering, logistics, human resources and media, as well as chaplaincy services, to support the RAF in the UK

and overseas on main bases and on operations.

Wing Commander Stephen Chaskin, Officer Commanding 611 Squadron, said: “With the RAF putting on an

inspiring display at the event - including the Red Arrows, as well as the Typhoon, and Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane flypasts - Southport Airshow offered a superb opportunity

to promote the work of 611 Squadron, against an amazing backdrop close to our base.” More details can be found at https://www.raf. mod.uk/our-organisation/ squadrons/611-r-squadron/

Welcome to Coningsby St Michael’s School!

framework. We are very pleased that the hard work undertaken by all in the school community has been recognised, including the high quality of teaching and learning as well as our curriculum which is ‘broad and ambitious for all pupils.’

The report confirmed that the school is securely graded as ‘Good’. The Ofsted inspection was thorough, led diligently and was professionally undertaken. We were open and transparent around all aspects of school life and had much evidence to support the process. One child described our school as having a ‘special energy!’

The children are at the heart of every decision we make to ensure that they are happy, safe and that the opportunities provided for them are relevant to their needs both now and in the future.

Their understanding of how to take care of each other and also knowing who to talk to in school if they have a worry or a problem, was written into the report. It was pleasing to see the polite and well-mannered behaviour of some of our youngest learners in EYFS recognised and how well prepared they are for KS1.

We welcome visits from prospective parents and pupils at any time during the school day, and look forward to seeing families at our open morning in November for pupils due to start school in September 2023. Please contact the school office if you would like to arrange a visit or ask any questions about our fantastic school.

The school has a dedicated team that works hard to reach high standards in everything we do and this is further embedded through our successful relationships with parents, the local community and the other schools in the Lincoln Anglican Academy Trust. Our Head of School is an Early Years and Phonics Specialist Teacher and our Assistant Head is a Maths Specialist Teacher. We are especially proud of the support the school provides for service families was highlighted as a strength in the report and although the wording didn’t quite make it into the report, during the discussions with the inspectors, they noted that this practice should be shared widely – this is what we are doing now.

This is our second year, of Forest School schools. The Forest School approach to teaching and learning is to nurture the skills children develop through their outdoor forest school lessons. Skills are developed over a sustained period of time and children are encouraged to take risks through challenging and meaningful activities, such as learning how to use tools and how to light a real fire safely for cooking outdoors. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our amazing Forest School leaders who have achieved the Level 3 Forest School qualification. This enables them to deliver exciting and creative lessons, whilst being fully trained in food hygiene and risk assessments for all equipment and activities undertaken. The core principles of the Forest School scheme focus on developing children’s skills in a holistic way. Children have lots of opportunities to explore the natural environment while also developing lifelong skills. As part of our desire to deliver a holistic approach to the curriculum we have some exciting developments in 2022/23 where we shall be encouraging more visitors into school, especially those with STEM backgrounds to help nurture and instill a passion for the Sciences and continue to support the areas in our Science Quality Mark 2021.

IN 1940, WITH THE GERMAN ARMY ADVANCING TOWARDS DUNKIRK, THE BELGIAN AND ROYAL AIR FORCES CONDUCTED SEVERAL DAYS OF BOMBING MISSIONS AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS ALONG THE ALBERT CANAL, BELGIUM.

This was an attempt to slow the advance of German tanks and armoured vehicles for the impending evacuation. The missions that took place 82 years ago were incredibly costly for both air forces.

As a result, every year, a ceremony is organised at the bridge over the Albert Canal at the town of Vroenhoven, Belgium. This ceremony remembers the heroism and sacrifices of the crews of the RAF’s 12 Sqn and the Belgian 5th Sqn (who coincidently both operated the same aircraft, the Fairey Battle) on 11th and 12th May 1940, during their air attacks on three bridges over the Albert Canal at Kanne, Vroenhoven and Veldwezelt.

This year, nine members of 12 Sqn were invited to participate in the ceremonial events that were attended by over three hundred people from the local area. The ceremony remembers all those that lost their lives including, Flying Officer Garland and Sergeant Gray, who were awarded the first RAF Victoria Crosses of the conflict for their actions on the Veldwezelt bridge over the Albert Canal.

The ceremony included wreath laying and a flypast from Belgian F-16s and RAF Typhoons from 12 Sqn. Personnel also laid a wreath at a 12 Sqn aircraft crash site further along the Canal where all the memorials are kindly maintained by local volunteers. The voluntary work includes liaising with the local council to ensure that an area of woodland is cutback and maintained so that Albert Canal is always visible from the site of the memorial.

12 Sqn personnel also visited the Heverlee Commonwealth War Graves

Cemetery which is the final resting place of 977 service personnel, including the two 12 Sqn Victoria Cross recipients alongside four other Sqn members.

Whilst in Belgium, a visit to Kleine Brogel Air Base also took place to learn about how a NATO ally delivers Air Power, and to discuss future interoperability opportunities. Home to several F-16 Sqns, the personnel were shown around Air Traffic Control, seeing several F-16s launch, as well as their Sqn Ops facility and their engine and depth maintenance bays. The final part of the visit to Kleine Brogel was lunch in the mess with members of the Belgian Air Force to discuss the different experiences and opportunities identified during our time in Belgium.

Additionally, this quarter 12 Sqn have conducted flypasts for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the State Visit for the Japanese Prime Minister and the UEFA Women’s EURO Final at Wembley Stadium, as well as providing a static display at RIAT alongside 11 Sqn Qatari Emiri Air Force’s Hawk T2. This has all been undertaken alongside the final stages of preparation for the deployment to FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The Sqn also recently held a Families Day for the families of Sqn personnel who are due to deploy.

Danger Zone’ which proved to be a recent particular favourite with his disciples (the Engineers). ‘DJ’ picks up the Junta leader title after a kangaroo court of opinion, long may he reign.

The Sqn has settled in well to its current tasking in sandier climes and for many a “Joe Bag O’ Donuts” Junior Pilot, it is the first time being deployed in an Operational Theatre – enjoying the challenge of putting their skills and training into realworld practice. The QWI job cannon is now in full swing, along with the monthly QWI quiz which has everyone combing endlessly through the books for all levels of niche info… a treat!

Hot off their enhanced Vigilance Activity tasking, riding the first Typhoons onto Combat Air Policing over Poland, No XI(F) Sqn began its routine Operational preparation, ready to further its preparedness for commitments overseas. The Sqn, along with the wider Typhoon force, pulled on all of its resources to ensure mission success, with all support elements of the Sqn digging deep to deliver for Combat Air. We are in unprecedented times, but with the determination of our people and our focus, No XI(F) Sqn stands ready to face any threat.

The Sqn reached out into the local community and hosted a group from Boston Endeavour Academy. The group enjoyed a brief on our role, a tour of the Aircrew Equipment Assembly Bay and a tour of the Typhoon itself. All in all, the Academy had a great time and said that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves in their first visit out since 2020 and the rise of Covid!

The Worshipful Company of Grocers, who are affiliated with the Sqn, paid a visit in

May. They generously hosted a supper at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa for a number of aircrew and groundcrew, where many “dits” were spun and an enjoyable evening was had by all. The next day, The Worshipful Company visited the Sqn where they were briefed about life on a Typhoon sqn from an aircrew and groundcrew perspective, as well as receiving a jet tour and an opportunity to fly the simulator – many thanks to the simulator staff for their help in arranging this. An 86-yearold ‘Grocer’ demonstrated his skills by flying a circuit, so

perhaps the Engineers’ mantra, “it can’t be that difficult can it sir” is correct??

Sadly, it was time to say goodbye to some of our colleagues. Flt Lt Harriet Curran departed the RAF for pastures new, she has been a terrific Ops Officer for the Sqn and will be greatly missed. Thank you Harriet! Flt Lt Dan Bass or ‘Bassy’, as he is known to his friends, is also jetting off! The ‘Junta’ leader will be sorely missed by everyone on the Sqn, not only for his ridiculous energy levels at all times but also for his singing skills on ‘Highway to the

Socially, ‘member’ of the week has been a favourite, with nominations coming in thick and fast. The ‘prize’ of being awarded the red velvet jacket is a delight to wear in the heat, I’m looking forward to the next round of voting with bated breath! Who will it be?..

On a serious note, congratulations go to Flt Sgt Christopher “Dinger” Bell who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, the Sqn is hugely proud that one of its own has been recognised in such a way. Have a great summer everyone! Aquilis! Boz

MEMORIAL FLIGHT

On Monday 11th July 2022, personnel from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire celebrated 65 years since the flight was officially established at RAF Biggin Hill in 1957.

Formerly known as the RAF Historic Aircraft Flight, the flight consisted of three PR Mk XIX Spitfires, and the last airworthy Hurricane, LF363, which is still flown by the flight today. Since then the flight has grown to maintain twelve historic aircraft: six Spitfires, two Hurricanes, two Chipmunk training aircraft, a C-47 Dakota and the Avro Lancaster.

To celebrate the 65th year of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the flight hosted a special birthday tea to which a number of WW2 veterans were invited to sit and dine amongst the historic aircraft on the flight, and to meet with current serving personnel sharing inspirational stories and memories.

During a speech given at the event, OC BBMF Sqn Ldr Mark Sugden thanked the veterans for attending, reaffirming that they are a huge part of the BBMF Story before going on to spend time with each veteran individually, shaking hands and thanking them personally.

The BBMF would like to thank sponsors

The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Company for their support in hosting the event. From providing the copious amounts of tea and coffee enjoyed at the Birthday Tea, to the bone china, table decorations and overall event staffing support – we really couldn’t have done it without them!

GREEN ENDORSEMENT FOR BBMF PILOT FLT LT ANDREW PREECE

BBMF fighter pilot Flight Lieutenant Andy Preece MBE has been awarded a Green Endorsement – the highest Air Safety award available – for his handling of a potentially dangerous emergency in BBMF Spitfire Mk IX MK356.

On 11th May 2022 Andy conducted a partial flight test after rectification of an oil leak from Spitfire MK356’s propeller mechanism. Having successfully completed the test, he recovered the aircraft to RAF Coningsby and before landing he carried out the normal ‘brakes on, off, exhausting’ test of the pneumatic wheel brakes, which are part of the prelanding checks. Unfortunately, due to a very unusual failure of the brake control valve, the right-hand brake retained its full pressure, which Andy immediately noticed. He was faced with having to land the Spitfire with the right brake potentially locked on. There is no documented drill or procedure for this failure and Andy had to rely solely on his extensive experience and deep technical knowledge of the aircraft. Spitfires are notoriously challenging in the landing phase, especially with respect to directional control; therefore, having to

land with a locked main wheel created significant risk to both pilot and aircraft.

In the space of just a few minutes, Andy methodically diagnosed every potential scenario, from the fault being an indication malfunction, to the worst case that the main wheel would remain locked on touchdown. Having weighed up three possible landing options, he chose the one that would be most survivable and result in least damage to the aircraft should the worst-case situation occur. In anticipation that, if the brake was actually locked on, it would ultimately result in an uncontrollable swing to the right, he elected to land on the main runway at Coningsby which, although presenting an adverse crosswind component, offered the most run off should a runway excursion occur. His outstanding awareness and consequent management predicted where the Spitfire might end up and he asked for the fire crews to be repositioned to safer locations. This almost certainly saved lives as his aircraft came to a halt precisely where one crash vehicle had previously been waiting.

On touch down it was immediately apparent that the right main wheel was indeed locked, but with exceptional

handling skill Andy managed to maintain directional control for approximately 1500 feet of the landing roll. Videos of the incident shows the tail raising rapidly after touchdown, which if not corrected immediately would have resulted in a propellor strike with the ground. Andy resisted the strong temptation to use excessive left brake to keep the aircraft straight, as again this would have resulted in the aircraft tipping forward onto its nose. Remarkably, he managed to keep the aircraft on the runway until it had slowed to about 30 knots and rudder authority was lost, at which point the aircraft turned right onto the grass at the side of the runway and entered a slowspeed ground loop. As the aircraft left the runway, Andy had the capacity to turn the ignition off to further protect the aircraft. The Spitfire was undamaged apart from a badly flatted right tyre and, after the faulty valve had been changed, the tyre replaced and checks of the undercarriage had been carried out, MK356 was back flying again.

The Green Endorsement cites Andy’s clarity of thought, exemplary handling skills and impeccable airmanship, which saved a priceless aircraft, avoided any injuries and resulted in an almost perfect outcome.

ALI CELL

A BUSY FEW MONTHS HAVE SEEN THE AIR LAND INTEGRATION (ALI) CELL CONTINUE TO INVEST IN ESSENTIAL TRAINING WHILST UPHOLDING THEIR OPERATIONAL COMMITMENTS AS THE RAF’S LEAD AIR LAND INTEGRATION SPECIALISTS.

Deploying on Ex RED FLAG ALASKA, ALI Cell personnel spent three weeks training alongside NATO partners, in a multinational air to air exercise in the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex.

Training included the ALI Cell working with a variety of USAF & RAF Air mobility assets, whilst integrating close air support from AH64 units based out of Fort Wainwright in Alaska.

The training continued with members of the ALI Cell taking part in Ex SPARTAN DAGGER at the USAFEAFAFRICA Warfare Centre, Einsiedlerhof, Germany. This was a Major Combat Operation exercise which allowed JTACs and TACPs to plan and execute multiple mission sets working alongside NATO allies and assets. The 2-week package was a fantastic opportunity to engage with NATO allies and conduct mission readiness training in support of our operational commitments.

Closer to home, the unit conducted Ex CENTURION BARRITUS, a Live Field Firing package at Stanford Training

Area in Norfolk. This forms part of the unit’s annual currency training and was a great chance for personnel to refresh their close combat skills, and JNCOs to develop their leadership skills. Training including casualty extraction, and grenade engagements, designed to heighten the level of realism and test decision making under pressure. It was an excellent and rewarding week for all members, that highlighted the JNCO cadre’s leadership ability throughout.

The fast pace will continue throughout the remainder of the year, with the unit looking forward to further overseas engagements in the US, France and Australia.

7FP COA 2!

We have taken the airfield back! TwentySix years after a permanent RAF Regiment unit left RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, 7 Force Protection Wing (FP Wg) have undertaken the first, enduring, specialist airfield defence deployment to Akrotiri in support of Operation TIMBERN. The deployment has been supported by 1 Sqn RAF Regiment one of the 7 Sqns that form the FP Wing. Prior to the deployment, protection and security had been provided by Army Resident Infantry Battalions based in Cyprus. This had been the case for the last decade.

7 FP Wg deployed to Akrotiri in late March 2022 with specialist Air FP personnel from 7 FP Wg Headquarters and over 100 specialist

Dismounted Close Combat RAF Regiment Gunners and Officers from 1 Squadron. The Wing HQ was supported by 2 Tactical Police Flight, who have helped to assure the FP for Akrotiri, including the deployed Typhoon Detachment. This Air FP activity will continue a long history of providing FP to ensure that RAF air operations can continue in a safe and secure manner.

The FP Force is now fully established in RAF Akrotiri and will ensure the protection of RAF and wider Defence assets based at the Station. The future remains unclear as ever, however, what is certain is that RAF Akrotiri will be protected to allow the continued projection of UK air power across the globe.

NEW OC ENG WG

A fond farewell, and a welcome return to Coningsby as Wg Cdr Kate Macartney hands over to Wg Cdr Bryn Kirby as OC Eng Wg (formerly OC Eng and Logs Wg). Wg Cdr Macartney made the following outgoing statement:

It has been a huge privilege to have commanded Engineering and Logistics Wing (now Engineering Wing) for the last two years. The Wing’s impressive achievements during a period of exceptional operational tempo in support of NATO’s response to Ukraine and delivery of the nationally important Queen’s Platinum

Jubilee flypast was only possible due to the outstanding commitment and professionalism of the engineering and logistics community at Royal Air Force Coningsby. I am immensely proud to have been part of everything they have achieved and would like to wish Wg Cdr Kirby the very best for his command.

Wg Cdr Kirby returns to Coningsby having previously been Senior Engineer Officer on 29 Squadron from 2014 to 2016 and having more recently completed a 3-year tour as the lead Project Manager for UK Typhoon National Capability within Defence Equipment &

Support. His 17-year career in the RAF has also seen him complete tours at RAF Marham and RAF Waddington, several staff appointments and two deployments to Afghanistan.

Wg Cdr Kirby made the following incoming statement:

I am absolutely delighted to be taking over command of the RAF Coningsby Engineering Wing and being appointed as MilCAM for Typhoon and BBMF. It will be a real privilege to work with the exceptional Officers and Aviators of the Wing at a time when the Typhoon Force remains committed to unprecedented levels of Operational activity and BBMF continue to excel in their unique commemoration of the RAF’s past.

RAF CONINGSBY DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES

Here in the Community Support Flight, we are always looking for new ways and resources to support our families of deployed Service Personnel (SP) near and far.

Even if you are not married you may still have family such as partners, parents, grandparents, brothers & sisters and regardless of the relationship, we want to send the message that wherever you live we are here to support you. For every week that SP are away on Operations we receive a grant which is called the Families Welfare Grant (FWG) and this is to be used to support the families left behind. Here at RAF Coningsby, we have a great selection of craft items for

both children and adults which have been purchased. We also have Jump Inc. trampoline park, Jubilee Park (Woodhall Spa) swimming passes and an annual pass for Tattershall Farm Park for our deployed families to utilise. We arrange monthly events, some local, some further afield. For example, in May, we organised a meal at the local restaurant and over 50 of our family members enjoyed a 3-course meal whilst meeting other families in the same boat. Another trip was to the Wild Pines Outdoor Activity Centre,

which included Tree Top adventures, gliding through the sky on Zip wires, an Archery competition and lunch too.

Now for the important bit… If you know you’re loved one is going on deployment, remind them to contact the HIVE and ensure that they complete the Point of Contact paperwork. This will enable us to contact you with the information regarding deployment support available, and if they ‘Opt In’, you will also receive invitations to all our events.

We hold monthly PreDeployment briefs in The Lounge (above Heroes) on the last Monday of each month, starting at 1400 hrs. Service Personnel due to deploy will

receive an invitation to join us and they can collect resources on the same day. We also welcome families to attend these pre-deployment briefs, so they can hear for themselves what support is on offer and see the range of provisions we have available, especially for children to help them to cope with the family separation.

Please contact the HIVE on CON-GMBHIVEGrp@mod.gov.uk if you require more information regarding Deployment Support or anything else for that matter.

OP RANCOR

The RAFP worked alongside RAF Regiment from QCS, RAF Northolt, providing a Force Protection presence in order to detect, deter and deny any hostile action against areas that deliver key support to ongoing operations. Examples of hostile action can include terrorism, espionage, sabotage, and subversion and organised crime (TESSOC). Op RANCOR saw the RAFP, MPGS and RAF Regiment deliver security effects across RAF Coningsby and in the local area. This included conducting vehicle searches on Vehicle Check Points (VCPs), internal and external patrols of the base, enhanced control of exit and entry points with Military Working Dogs (MWDs), and security testing of certain areas on the base.

Op RANCOR demonstrated the capability of the Force Protection within the RAF. With RAF Police and Regiment working alongside one another, an effective and successful operation was produced which is hoped to be replicated again at RAF Coningsby.

This operation incorporated several

different RAFP specialisms, including the use of military working dogs. RAF Coningsby MWDs provided specially trained dogs that can detect explosives, drugs, and potential intruders. These dogs were utilised at the control of entry points of RAF Coningsby, to detect anything that shouldn’t be coming onto the base and anything that shouldn’t be leaving the base. Patrol dogs were utilised whilst internally patrolling to act as a deterrent from any potential outsider threats trying to gain access. The Protective Security element at RAF Coningsby identified key areas within the base that required a heightened security presence. This led to the Police and Regiment providing a larger Force Protection output in that area to detect, deter and deny.

The security and Force Protection effect is a force multiplier which allows RAF Coningsby to conduct vital military outputs, such as QRA, without being perturbed from traditional or non-traditional security threats. This ultimately aids the further output from not only the RAF but also NATO.

During the first week of April 2022, the RAF Police (RAFP) from No 4 (Typhoon) RAF Police Sqn conducted an enhanced security and policing operation at RAF Coningsby known as Op RANCOR.

BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY SCHEME COMES TO CONINGSBY

RAF CONINGSBY HAS RECENTLY SIGNED UP TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE BREASTFEEDING NETWORK’S ‘BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY SCHEME’.

The Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme aims to:

• Support families to feel confident breastfeeding out and about

• Be a way that communities and businesses can show they welcome and support breastfeeding

• Raise awareness about the benefits of and barriers to breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is good for mums, babies and the environment, but many women feel nervous about breastfeeding out and about or worry that they won’t be able to continue once they return to work. This can mean they choose not to breastfeed, or that they stop breastfeeding before they want to. Concerns about breastfeeding in public (such as embarrassment and negative public attitudes) have been identified as one of the main barriers to breastfeeding. Practicalities of expressing milk during the working day are a reason that many breastfeeding mothers stop breastfeeding earlier than they would have liked to.

It is important to remember that the right to breastfeed in

any public place is protected by law, and that most women only have positive experiences of breastfeeding out and about. However, it may be that you are concerned this would not be appropriate or even allowed in a military environment. This is not true!

By signing up to the Breastfeeding Friendly scheme, RAF Coningsby is demonstrating that it welcomes breastfeeding families, as well as signalling a commitment to supporting breastfeeding personnel on the Station. If you are visiting the Station with your baby and prefer to breastfeed in private, then please don’t hesitate to discuss this with a member of the staff at the venue you are attending, who should be able to find a suitable area for you to use.

If you are a parent looking for advice about how to continue breastfeeding on your return to work, or a line manager wondering how you can better support any breastfeeding personnel, then please contact the Support Group for RAF Parents Returning to Work on Facebook, Defence Connect or by emailing the RAF Coningsby representative at Sophie. davison998@mod.gov.uk.

TABLE FOR SUPPLY HQ

We all know it’s unhealthy to be sat around staring at a computer: from a computer to a presentation board, a phone to a laptop, looking at screens for nine hours straight puts a strain on the eyes and the brain - not to mention it can be antisocial!

In order to give military personnel another option to get some ‘away from screen’ time, focus their energy on a different area, and revitalise the brain, LS set out to purchase a new pool table for the Supply HQ tea bar with help from the Nuffield

Trust. Providing a significant improvement to the current restroom facilities, the Base Support Wing personnel have all pocked the extra morale since the table’s arrival!

The pool table is now a great spot to socialise and take a break. The benefits of getting a pool table far outweigh the cons (if there are any cons at all!) and it’s safe to say that employee appreciation from this small gesture will be at an all-time high when your teammates are challenging everyone to a rematch.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE STREET PARTY

It was a rainy Sunday in Coningsby, The day of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Street Party,

The balloons were up, the banners and bunting were hung,

The games were all prepped. And the celebrations should have begun But yet the organisers could have wept.

All week the sun had shone, But now, oh no! It was gone, The rain was torrential,

Of a glimpse of the sun, there was no potential. What could they do?

They had to pull through!

Gazebos and Umbrellas, rains coats and wellies

Ice creams in the rain, filling up little bellies, Games galore, who will have a go? Who will win?

Giant Jenga and Connect 4, crowns to wear and Face paints too, now give me your biggest grin.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE HANGAR BASH

FOLLOWING A HARSH 2 YEARS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND RELENTLESS ACTIVITY FOR STATION PERSONNEL IT WAS DECIDED THAT TO SHOW GRATITUDE TO THE WHOLE FORCE PERSONNEL AND TO CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE A STATION WIDE HANGAR PARTY WAS TO BE HELD.

As with all events it started off a relatively low-key affair with a modest budget and limited entertainments but as interest across station grew, so did the support from our industry partners resulting in an occasion where 750 personnel attended! The event provided great food – as the Fire Section can attest, great music – with a notable appearance from RAF Coningsby’s own Ed Sheeran and plenty of entertainment, as well as several free drinks on arrival for the Junior Ranks.

Amalgamated with this event was the CO’s Cup but taking a different turn by using a rodeo bull and bungee run inflatable to add a level of novelty to the competition. The RAFP were victorious with a member of the organising committee pressured into appearing for the victory picture.

To achieve this scale of event a full hangar was required resulting in displacing 12 Sqn for a 48-hour period and blocking access to 41 TES’ hangar so sincere thanks are owed to those who were inconvenienced. Equally, thanks are owed to areas across the station who pulled together to support the event notably: GEF, C4I, DSF, AEF, RAFP, Fire Section, Cat Flt, BAES and the JRWF who combined this event with their summer function and provided the initial horsepower and funding to get it off the ground.

With the success of the event and smiling (not totally inebriated) faces leaving the hangar, it is hoped that that this will inevitably become a well-deserved repeat event to celebrate the continual hard work of all those based at RAF Coningsby.

As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Celebrations here at Coningsby, the committee decided to put on a number of Street Parties in the Service Families Accommodations. With four areas identified; Castlefields, Thorpe and Abbey and two at separate ends of Main Site, we were lucky to have a sizeable fund thanks to the generous sponsors to whom we, and the service families that benefitted, are very grateful. However, the day before the event, after a nice long dry spell, the forecast changed and heavy rainfall was expected all weekend. This had the potential to really spoil all

the celebrations and ruin the hard work put in by the team to get the events up and running. Yet, as you can see by the fabulous photos, all was not lost and the day was enjoyed by all who attended. Whilst Thorpe and Abbey were able to secure the community centre and move the celebrations inside, the others carried on outside, with welly boots and raincoats. The children were able to have their faces painted, get involved with the games and the free ice creams arranged by the committee went down a real treat as you can see! All in all, the event was a huge success and something to be remembered for years to come.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL

A 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL COMPETITION THAT WAS OPEN TO ALL STN PERSONNEL WAS HELD ON THU 19 MAY. IT WAS ONE OF MANY EVENTS ACROSS RAF CONINGSBY TO CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE.

13 teams entered the tournament on what turned out to be a fine summers day. The group games kicked off at 09:30, and 3 hours later the positions were decided with GEF A and SCAS topping groups A and B respectively. Between the 36 games in the group stage, a total of 153 goals were witnessed; some of exceptional quality, whilst others were due to some very questionable goalkeeping skills.

All teams went through to the knockout stage, enabling teams who finished bottom of the group (but who were on the crest of a wave) the chance to progress into the quarter-finals, albeit by facing tougher competition in the process. TMF and C4i were the first teams to participate in a penalty shootout, with TMF emerging as victors. More penalty shootouts emerged between 12 Sqn B and SEF in the quarter-finals, with SEF progressing to face SCAS in the semi-final. Game 2 in the semi-final was hotly contested between GEF A and TMF B (who were very happy to progress further than TMF A). However, despite TMF B taking the lead, the quality of GEF A proved too much and they won 3-1.

Both group winners made it to the final, with GEF A captained by SAC (T) Blair Bryant vs SCAS captained by SAC Brynley Morris. Twice taking the lead, GEF scored a great long range effort but the SCAS captain replied each time forcing the final into dramatic penalties.

Both Captains stepped up to take the opening penalties with Bryant missing the target and Morris seeing his home. With SCAS keeper Paul Burgess saving and SAC Luke Mayes finding the net, SCAS emerged as victors. 33 goals were scored total.

OC Ops, Wg Cdr Paul Hanson, who presented the trophy, had this to say:

“Morale and competitive spirit were very much in evidence on a great early summer’s day. Given everything that’s going on with Ops and preps the Stn has been running super-hot. I’m pleased you were able to have the opportunity to run the event and that it was so well attended and enjoyed by so many.”

RAF CONINGSBY ATC WELCOMES RAF CRANWELL AND WADDINGTON RADAR CONTROLLERS TO ESTABLISH THE FIRST MILITARY TERMINAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTRE (TATCC)

The ATC Sqn at RAF Coningsby has undergone huge changes over the past 18 months as part of Programme Marshall – a multi-billion pound, MOD-wide, ATC equipment upgrade programme. In the last 6 months, preparation has intensified as we awaited the arrival of both Waddington and Cranwell radar controllers. At present, the new ‘hub and spoke’ model of ATC radar services is now fully live across Lincolnshire and as the Terminal ATC Centre ‘hub’ (TATCC), RAF Coningsby delivers approach services to: Barkston Heath, Cranwell, Scampton and Waddington.

So, what has changed? New ATC equipment has replaced obsolete radars, radios and flying programme

displays with a modern interface, alongside new networks connecting multiple airfields for data sharing. It is like moving from a Nokia 8210 (remember those?) to an iPhone in one leap! The new equipment performs in a totally different way, but it is not just about equipment. Building on the work of the previous SATCO, Sqn Ldr Travis Stone (now Wg Cdr), the team has restructured and digitised in many other areas. The command structure, briefing patterns, communications and ATC procedures have all come under scrutiny. Even the tea-bar now runs on a QR code! Just as importantly, we have had to work out how to absorb the new, additional team members into the building and its working life,

FEATURES ISSUE 3 202226 OPS WING

with 3 very different working patterns. Typhoon night-flying at Coningsby no longer means a quiet daytime in ATC!

From Flt Lt Matt Bowers, the lead controller for Waddington radar: “Waddington Radar began operating from the Lincs TATCC as the first HubSatellite unit to transition as part of Programme Marshall in April 2022. The new TopSky equipment provides terminal controllers with state of the art, modern air traffic sensors, enabling ATCOs to deliver a safer, more efficient service with less ambiguity. Waddington controllers are working alongside Coningsby and Cranwell Radar, this combination allows ATCOs to liaise closely with each other and ensures the greatest flexibility across the congested airspace over Lincolnshire”.

Cranwell radar moved in at the start of July, led by Flt Lt Lee Hodgkinson: “I’m immensely proud of the effort from my team in enabling Cranwell Radar to safely transition into the TATCC operating model with no adverse effect to the delivery of flying training from RAF Cranwell or RAF Barkston Heath. The ongoing modernisation in technological capability throughout Air Traffic Control is evident and most welcomed. Controllers have found the equipment to be comprehensive, accurate and intuitive”.

The establishment of Lincolnshire TATCC has not been without its challenges. Different radar pictures give better detection in some areas but less so in others. Networked capabilities require a new way to plan for power and communication outages across 5 airfields and many other standalone sites. Fewer personnel in place to support the Waddington and Cranwell tasks gives less resilience, but a smaller training timeline overall.

Many of the benefits are hard for the outside world to notice straight away but having all the ATC radar controllers in one room is definitely helping: quicker communication, more clarity for the radar picture, enhanced surveillance data, better radios, more reliable equipment and just as importantly, a brand new carpet is also now in place!

Fantastic work by everyone involved across all the ATC units in Lincolnshire. Next stop… a new crew room kitchen…!
