A Year in the Life of a Scouting Volunteer
Lieutenant Colonel Edward Lilleyman, who has just graduated from Number 26 Advanced Command and Staff Course, heads home to Yorkshire having spent an exciting year as a volunteer with 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group. Edward joined the Group in September 2022 and has been working with both the Cub and the Scout Sections throughout the last 10 months.
The 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group is a thriving and active Group based at the Defence Academy. It welcomes children from military families and the local villages and comprises over 125 children (48 Beavers aged 6-8 years; 48 Cubs aged 8-10.5 years, and 30 Scouts aged
10.5-14 years). This is enabled by our volunteers: 40 Adult Leaders, 12 Explorer or Young Leaders, and a support base including Trustees and Committee Members.
Each Section runs a weekly meeting with fun, exciting, and safe indoor and outdoor Scouting activities in and around
the Defence Academy and local community. There are also opportunities for brilliant adventures at weekends. This term, members of the Group have enjoyed hiking, caving, offshore sailing, mountaineering, canoeing, paddle boarding, urban biking, and narrowboating. The Group held a three-day Camp for 40 Cubs in May; a two-night Family Camp for 150 people in July; and a five-day Scout Camp is about to launch!
Edward said “I have found the experience extremely rewarding. I have spent most of my time with the Cub Scouts. Notable activities included whittling (which was rather nerve-racking!), navigation, shelter-building, cooking pancakes for Pancake Day, and a range of ‘good turns’ to support the community in both Watchfield and Shrivenham. I have also been
a Patrol Mentor with the Scouts, and particularly enjoyed the Night Hike on the Ridgeway, ‘wide games’ on White Horse Hill, and go-karting around the car park outside the hut. It’s a shame that, because I was weekly commuting home to my family in York, I didn’t manage to get involved in all the amazing weekend activities and camps that the Group has run this year.”
During his 10 months with the Group, Edward has managed to become a fully-trained Section Assistant, and he will be continuing his Scouting in the Cub Section of 1st Strensall Scout Group, where his twin boys are currently members.
Looking forward to his new role in Strensall he says “The team and facilities at 1st Watchfield &

Shrivenham are amazing; I wish I could take them home with me. I will, however, be taking with me many lessons and ideas which I hope to implement in Strensall. I feel that this is just the beginning as I have found volunteering a brilliant experience. I plan to continue learning and become an Assistant Section Leader. This means progressing through the many developmental modules for volunteers, ultimately earning my ‘Wood Badge’ which is one of the highest accolades within the Scout Movement. I have had a fantastic time with 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham and would recommend the experience to anyone.”
Helen Wright, the Group Scout Leader for 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham, said “I’m glad Ed has found the volunteering so
rewarding. He has been a brilliant asset to the Group and has made such a difference over the past year. We’re sorry to see
him leave and we wish him many more happy Scouting experiences back in Strensall.”

HAPPY FAMILIES
Beavers,
Cubs, Scouts, and volunteers from 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group were joined by family members and some special guests for a fantastic Family Camp in early July.

Over 150 people came together for a fun and exciting weekend camp at Hinton Marsh Farm. Activities included a mobile climbing wall, African drumming workshops, an inflatable assault course, go-kart racing, archery, and ‘backwoods cooking’ on an open fire.
With so many of its members gathered together, it was the perfect time to present a number of awards to volunteers, including
a 15-year Long Service Award, and a Silver Acorn which is reserved for distinguished service of at least 20 years.
Helen Wright, the Group Scout Leader, said, “A family camp is a great opportunity for members of the Group to make new friends and try new things, and for parents, carers, and for other family members to share in the Scouting experience. It was brilliant to have so many families join us. There was a great
atmosphere on Friday evening as people enjoyed settling in, meeting each other, and playing games in the balmy evening sunshine. I was so pleased to be able to thank and acknowledge the achievements of our amazing volunteers who do so much to give young people brilliant experiences and skills for life through Scouting.”
As well as the huge range of activities, which included a Hog Roast and ‘Grand Campfire’,
the weekend saw families team up and compete in a series of challenges. There was much hilarity as teams attempted tasks such as ‘Get all team members through a hole made in a single sheet of A4 paper’. Other challenges included ‘Correctly bandage and support a wounded hand’ and ‘Compose and perform a poem about Scouting’. One seven-year-old guest wrote:
“I had a great time this weekend. I hoped it [would] never end.

A nine-year-old Cub Scout said, “I had such an amazing time and can’t wait for the next Family Camp!” A parent said, “I was so impressed by all the effort that the team had put into Family Camp!”
Helen said, “I’d like to thank the organising team for laying on such a brilliant weekend. There seemed to be lots of happy families enjoying themselves. We had a bit of rain on Saturday night, but the sunshine returned on Sunday and, as Vivian Green said, ‘Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.’”

Military Wives Choir Defence Academy
The choir reflects on its summer term….
As the choral calendar has finally drawn to a close and we take a well-earned summer break, it’s a tricky task to be selective when it comes to picking out the choir’s very best moments of the summer term.
Maybe the highlight was back in May at a collaborative concert in Wales celebrating ‘Women in Song’?
Hosted by ‘Allegra’, an all-female choir who are local to Newport, we were joined by ‘Bangor Ladies Choir’ from Northern Ireland in a spectacular evening of choral music at Allegra’s Annual Gala Concert. In the aesthetically stunning venue of St Woolos Cathedral, there was a fantastic ambience as all choirs gave their very best performances with a diverse and eclectic range of
music. From folk to pop and classical numbers, there was music to suit all tastes and the choirs performed to a packed cathedral. The feedback was extremely positive and the giddy euphoria that followed the event lasted for weeks….
But maybe the real highlight was our very own end of year concert? It was a summer concert like no other: A last hurrah! A last opportunity for us to celebrate a year of music and friendship together before the end of the academic year and the sad but inevitable departure of some of our members. A fun, family orientated evening at St Alban’s Church with a range of whole choir, solo and sectional performances resulted in takings of £546.30 to raise much needed funds for our choir.
The lasting memory was not
so much the dedication and commitment to practice leading up to the concert, nor the polished performances on the night, but the team effort and spirit that prevailed to make it happen. A
truly collaborative event where we problem solved, we laughed, we cried, we agonised over detail and we supported one another. Every one of us played a significant role to make it happen. We were
AUTUMN 2023 12 MWC
industrious, and we were brave and courageous; we were stronger together. It was empowering, it was pure magic!
The concerts will come and go but the friendships that have been forged will last a lifetime, so it is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to some of our lovely and cherished members. They will be sorely missed.
If you want to try something new, then maybe choir is for you. Friendship and support and a sense of belonging are just some of the underpinning elements to choir, but also the wealth of opportunities and events that arise. Why not give us a try? As the blank diary pages start to fill up for this next academic year, there will be no end to the music, the challenges, the socials, the laughs and the opportunities.

Padre Phil's farewell...
Over the summer many of us have had a chance to let our hair down, escape from the shackles of the laptop, and remind ourselves what our families look like.
We might find ourselves in the car, sunglasses on, windows down, whilst belting out a karaoke classic in the privacy of our own car, especially when stuck in holiday traffic. One of the most popular is Frank Sinatra’s My Way’. Who doesn’t love singing it out with full gusto? As you build up to the final chorus and the windows begin to reverberate under the strain, you suddenly notice that the occupants of the stationary car beside yours in the traffic jam are filming your performance. As you smile in sheer embarrassment and your face heats up to compete with the sun, you make a mental note not to log in to Facebook that evening, just in case you have gone viral. Not that this has ever happened to me, of course.
Sadly, this will be my last article, as I am posted from the Defence Academy after 3 years. As I reflect upon my time, the words of ‘My Way’ come to mind. The song is one of defiance, standing up against the world, and relying on your own strength to face this world. The final line sums it up: ‘Let the record show, I took the blows, and did it my way’. But, this is not the Defence Academy way.
The Defence Academy is a unique place where we work together for something greater than ourselves. Sailors, Soldiers, Aviators, civil servants, contractors, and others from all over the world come here to improve their knowledge and skills, so that they might create a better world and a better peace. It’s not about doing things ‘My Way’, which can only lead to
war. But learning to do things ‘Our Way’, which can only lead to peace. The bonds that are formed in the classroom, coffee house, LEGO club, military wives choir, sewing and quilting, Sunday worship, Scouting and Guiding, DAFFY’s, and more, are where we learn to do things, ‘Our Way’.
And if we do more things ‘Our Way’, imagine what this world would be like. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God”. Being a peacemaker isn’t easy, it is costly. It is costly to invest in relationships with those that are different; it is costly to spend time understanding the culture and religion of others; it is costly to let others into your life and change you. But, this is how we become peacemakers,
because we recognise the shared humanity in everyone.
Thank you for all your love and support to me and to chaplaincy during my time. You have truly taught me how we can do things ‘Our Way’, and how, together, we can be better peacemakers.
Often be busy, stressful, and full on. Sometimes it can feel like we are on a treadmill, never achieving anything, and exhausting ourselves in the process.
Taking time for ourselves often slips down our list of priorities.
If you are looking to find a precious moment of peace, calm, and tranquillity, then come to The Haven. The Haven is located in Building 43, beside the chaplaincy centre. It is a quiet space, where all are welcome to sit and enjoy the best free refreshments in the West. Why not enjoy a book; assemble a jigsaw; or try knitting or adult colouring.
If that’s not enough, spend some time getting lost in your own world with LEGO.
The Haven is open to all during the working day, and you are welcome to stay for as long as you need.

We have had a most productive and enjoyable year, with lots of new techniques being learnt, friendships made and lots of quilts created, either to gift for new babies or to honour parents and their landmark days or to keep as memories of our time with The Academy Quilters in Shrivenham. Two of our members were presented with their Commendations from Col Giles who was brilliant at keeping things a secret right up to the very act of presentation. Thank you Col Giles, despite your busy work schedule, you made this happen and enabled us to make our two quilters, Lisa Lowe and Annika Lundmark, aware of just how much we valued their contribution to the group.
Various members wanted to have a “say” so here follows their comments………
I came to Shrivenham feeling a bit unsure of myself and rather daunted at having to make new friends all over again. Shouldn’t have worried though, a few minutes talking to the lady on the patchwork stall at the meet and greet and my world changed…..in fact, I changed! Signed up, turned up to classes and fell hopelessly in love. Couldn’t sew, didn’t know how to use a sewing machine but hey ho, I took home several quilts that I made myself. Many thanks to my tutor, my oh so patient tutor and her husband for looking after me and releasing the “inner quilter” in me.
Wish I had joined The Academy Quilters as soon as I had arrived at the Defence Academy. I have had the most enjoyable and creative time with them. The last 6 months have just flown by, much, much too fast but I have now relocated
with a much high self esteem, 2 big quilts and an ocean of knowledge and techniques under my belt. I love the patchwork and quilting world I have been introduced to, so much so that I intend to start up my own group at my new posting, thankfully my teacher will only be “a button away” as she says. Good luck to all you new quilters, hope you have as much of a good time as I did.
Never did very well at school with my sewing….in fact the teacher despaired of me so joining The Academy Quilters certainly wasn’t on my radar when arriving at Shrivenham. Oh boy, was I in for a total mind reset! I saw, I listened, I joined ……best decision ever. Made friends, learnt tons, drank so much English tea ( not a coffee girl any more ), laughed a load, learnt to ignore the clock, relax and create. Made all sorts of patchwork gifts, become my Grandmother’s best buddy (she makes quilts and I never knew) and am the most proud owner of not only a quilt but also a sewing machine. Gee, mega thanks to my new patchwork teacher for believing in me and giving me back myself after so many years of coping with stress and its downsides.
Best posting ever, thanks to the patchwork group, The Academy Quilters. Joined just before a Christmas, wish I had joined earlier. Had such fun learning new techniques, both sewing and learning to chill out and still the mind. My husband says he loves his relaxed and happy wife even more now…..he even bought me a sewing machine so I can continue making quilts etc. Thank you Academy Quilters, you saved yet another struggling soul ….turned her into a creative quilter.
