The Defence Academy Military Wives Choir said farewell to some of its members at the end of the Summer Term. Fortunately, September always means the arrival of new cohorts of students and their families to the Defence Academy; we have therefore been delighted to welcome a number of new members. Some have sung in other choirs both in the UK and overseas while others are completely new to the MWC family.
We quickly hit our stride and started reminding ourselves of familiar songs as we prepared for the service of Remembrance at St Thomas’ Church Watchfield, and the Festival of Remembrance organised by the Royal British Legion and held at Lydiard Park.
Some of our members were selected to join a massed choir to sing at events marking the unveiling of the British D-Day 80 memorial exhibition: “For Your Tomorrow”, 1475 life size silhouettes representing the casualties sustained, on display at the Temple of Concord & Victory at Stowe Gardens in October and November. Stowe Gardens was chosen as the official UK host location, and was the only place in the country the installation could be viewed before its return to France. This was truly a memorable and very poignant experience for all those who participated.
Excitingly, others were selected
as part of a choir of 100 and involved in a project that remained confidential for some time, namely the recording of a song, “November Sunday”, written specifically to commemorate the 76th birthday of King Charles III. Rehearsals and the subsequent recording were conducting in great secrecy, the finished result was unveiled on 1st November and is now on sale.
We are now preparing for Christmas carol services held, as always, at the Defence Academy, which means both preparing well known carols and learning new and sometimes off-beat versions of the more traditional ones. We also are rehearsing for a joint Christmas Concert with the Shrivenham Ladies’ Choir on Friday 6th December. Sadly, we are saying farewell to Geoff Walters who has been our accompanist since February 2022. Thank you for being such an amazing and helpful part of the choir – enjoy your well-earned retirement.
We are always delighted to welcome new or returning members; there are no auditions. The MWC is for female spouses
We meet on Monday mornings from 10.30am – 12noon in the Jubilee Community Centre, Faringdon Road, Watchfield (little ones welcome), with our main rehearsals on Thursday nights 7.30pm –9.30pm at St Albans Church on Axis Road, Watchfield.

Twelve lucky Cub Scouts and five volunteer Leaders from 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group spent a fantastic day at the Royal International Air Tattoo on Friday 19 July 2024.
The Cubs were among 30,000 young people who visited the TechnoZone – a ‘hands-on’ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) event to help inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators. Cubs enjoyed the interactive exhibits designed
to bring technology to life: they took control in a flight simulator; competed to be the best drone pilot; found out how thrust keeps an aircraft in the air and how ejector seats work; and grappled with challenges such as ‘escape from a virtual trap’ and puzzles such as ‘how to load an aircraft carrier’.
The Cubs and their Leaders made an early start so that they could make the most of all the air show had to offer. This included brilliant static displays and flying displays comprising over 250 aircraft from 25 countries. The Cubs particularly enjoyed the U2; the Harrier; the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display, and of course the RAF Falcons and the Red Arrows.
They also managed to get into an
A400M cockpit and investigate the controls panel. They enjoyed the ‘RAF Experience’ which included being able to ‘attack’ an RAF Policeman and see how they train for confrontational situations. The Cubs and their Leaders arrived home tired but jubilant after an absolutely brilliant day. One Cub Scout said, “I didn’t believe helicopters could fly like that! They were just amazing!” Another Cub Scout said, “The RAF Falcons were brilliant, and so nice to us!” A third Cub Scout said, “I loved all the challenges and puzzles. My mum is an Engineer in the Royal Air Force, and she must have a great
time doing things like that every day at work!”
Helen Wright, the Group Scout Leader, said, “RIAT is a fabulous experience. This was an approved educational visit which was a great opportunity for the Cubs to learn about air and space technology. The Cubs also had great fun, and found it all the more exciting because they had to eat lots of ice cream to try and keep cool on one of the hottest days of the year. I’d like to thank all my volunteer Leaders who helped to give our young people such a memorable day. I hope we can do it all again next year!”
The 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group is a thriving and active Scout Group based at the Defence Academy. We welcome children from UK and international armed forces’ families, and from the local villages. Every week, our 36 Beavers, 48 Cubs, and 28 Scouts enjoy fun, exciting, and safe indoor and outdoor Scouting activities in and around the Defence Academy and local community. At weekends, there are opportunities to go on day trips and camps, particularly in Cubs and in Scouts. All this is enabled by our adult volunteer Leaders and Explorer Young Leaders (aged 14-18 years) and our support base of Trustees and Committee Members. If your young person would like to be a Beaver (6-8 years), a Cub (8-10.5 years), or a Scout (10.5-14 years); or if you’d like to join the fun and become an adult volunteer, please email Helen on: helenwright@kascouts.org.uk

We have been thinking a lot about our personal resilience in recent months. How do we build and maintain it in the face of seemingly unceasing challenges?
I read an interesting study which sought to discover the traits resilient people possessed. They found that they were people who confronted their fears yet maintained an optimistic outlook. They sought, accepted and provided social support, and found role models they could emulate and learn from. Resilient people are guided by an inner moral compass and understand their own values. They also turned to religious or spiritual practices. They were also people who took care of their physical health and fitness, and kept mentally fit by being curious and pushing themselves to learn new things. They approached problems with flexibility and acceptance. Crucially, resilient people find meaning in and can grow through challenging experiences. Even those of us who have shown huge resilience in the past can have it eroded. A key thing to remember is that we all need to make a conscious effort to grow and maintain our own resilience; in body, mind and spirit. With all the pressures of life and work it is easy to ignore this, as I know personally. But taking time to build practices and habits will pay dividends later on.
I’m writing the weather is dark and miserable. The news and images from the Middle East are deeply distressing. The war in Ukraine is about to enter another year, and the challenges our new government face are myriad. Uncertainty is all around us. It’s easy to despair, to feel helpless, and to become fatigued by it all. There are no easy answers.
As we approach Christmas I reflect that the heart of this midwinter celebration is ‘Emmanuel’, which means ‘God with us’. The story is well known from school nativity plays, God becomes human by being born in a stable. Born amongst warring nations, instability and uncertainty, Christ enters into a broken world to be with us. It shows us that God holds all people to be hugely important, and God knows what it means to suffer with us.
The Bible describes God coming to be with us by saying ‘the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’ Even when the darkness seems overwhelming, let’s try to remember that. When we feel despair, let's seek out people to be with – just as God did. Be they family, friends, work colleagues, or people in need, giving them time and attention helps us all. That is a key part of finding our own resilience, and helping others build theirs.
I pray that you and those you

I took up my post in the Defence Academy in early 2023, having never been to the area before. This was for the start of my second tour following a stint in Scotland and I knew little about the Christian community here.
I was soon invited to Refuel by a member of ICSC. Meeting every morning at 0645 in St Alban’s Hall, this was a chance for me to start my day bright and early, discussing the Bible (following a good breakfast of bacon rolls) with other Christians.
We begin Refuel with breakfast, whilst we catch-up with each other. Then we top up brews and sit down to watch a video discussing Jesus’s teachings.
Afterwards, we split into groups to discuss what we have heard and reflect on our own feelings about it. At the end, we will share prayer points if people would like to, so we can go away and support each other throughout the week. I wanted to come because I have always found that coming together with other Christians has always been one of the most helpful things for remaining steadfast and growing in my faith. I have continued to find this help at Refuel. One of the things I most appreciate about the community is that there are officers and soldiers of all rank
ranges, but everyone treats each other as brothers and sisters.
Everyone is given the chance to voice their thoughts, feelings and opinions with the utmost respect and support. I am often quite a quiet person during discussion groups. However, I have never felt out of place because I enjoying hearing the thoughts of others and I never feel under pressure to speak when I wish to listen.
I have found Refuel to be very helpful for growing my faith because it gives me this regular chance to meet other Christians and reflect on the Bible’s teachings. It has also provided me with a community of friends who I know that, if I’m going through anything challenging in my life, will be there for me during the Wednesday sessions or outside of them.
Refuel is a great place for anyone who has long been a Christian, anyone who is early in their faith or who is just interested to hear what Christianity is all about and wishes to know more. If you would like to find out more, please come along bright and early on Wednesday mornings and you will be welcomed in warmly!

THE ACADEMY QUILTERS are well into their “build up to Christmas’ creative planning now.
Fun had been had in sorting stashes or buying fabrics….in some instances both. Choosing our next projects is always a mindful thing, limiting ourselves to one at a time is not easy but a challenge we enjoy. Using our brains, making decisions, helping each other….these all go together to make being an Academy Quilter so interesting and enjoyable.
Taking time away from every day hassles and stresses, taking time to chill out and “just be”, with something to show for our time together, is something quite restorative and mentally beneficial.
It has been great to see some many different creations taking shape and so many learning curves travelled so far this term. Well done to each and everyone of you.
Keep your bobbins full, needles sharp and sewing machine quietly purring away.
pieces and just let it
Wonderful to just empty my mind and “play”.
Left: Stain glass quilt blocks made from fabric scraps and quilt buddy shops. Love the bright, happy colours. The hand made black bias strips hold every thing together, make the colours “pop” and lend a bit of quiet order to this cheerful quilt.
Moving to the UK from USA was going to be a big thing for me……first time away from family and initially, not knowing anyone at the journey’s end. My man checked out the support system etc at the Defence Academy and found a quilt group…that resulted in him shouting from the verandah, “hey hun, there’s a quilt group, I wonder if it's like Nan’s”?
To be honest I didn’t really think any more about that for quite a while… I had packing up and goodbyes to do and into that packing went my treasured artist palette and paints etc, inherited from my Pa, who had inherited them from his Pa. I paint. A lot, almost all the time. Had seriously wondered about taking it all as hand luggage but was persuaded otherwise. I had misgivings but trusted the packers and the airfreight company.
Got to the UK, rocked up at Shrivenham, loved the surroundings and the countryside, loads of really old buildings, in other words, lots of things to paint. Happy me.
Waited and waited for a freight to arrive, seemed to take an age but the relief when it did was off the scale till………no paint carton, WHAT! My heart, my world, my treasured family connections…… where were they?
Well, to cut out the anguish and get to the good bit……my Pa took up the fight with the freight company and told me to “pick yourself up gal and get joining something”.
Didn’t want to join anything, I wanted my paints, I was being unreasonable I know but one day, having downed coffee number three and wanting something to
An "I Spy" quilt that was great fun to make. Really enjoyed sourcing just the right “picture” for each hexagon. Want to do another as I enjoyed this one so much.
read, I picked up the Academy mag and found a load of COLOUR, oh, oh, colour, not paints but fabric. My “joining thing”, a quilt group, got hold of my Pa and told him, his reply was “go for it, your Nan quilted, she has even started a baby quilt for you”. Oh gee, this was meant to happen.
Contacted the group tutor, got myself some fabrics and turned my upside down world the right way up. That group saved my sanity, opened my mind to a whole new world. I probably was not the best of students but the tutor had the patience of a saint, I loved her quiet way of getting the information across, her willingness to adapt things to my way of thinking and working and her “plan bs” when my sewing attempts went slightly awry (which they did, frequently) …I was excited, I had an outlet for my creative/colour obsession.
Of course, I missed my paints but that quilt group, The Academy Quilters, saved my soul and my mind and opened up a new world for me ….something I am incredibly grateful for, thank you so much for sticking with me, for picking me up and helping me to rebuild myself.
Am I still quilting…you bet I am. Back in the USA now with kiddos who have just got top grades for their Home Economics submissions …. Two small quilts and I taught them. So proud of myself and them. I now teach sewing at their school and am loving my new life. Academy Quilters, you rock! Thank you.
Ps, My Pa battled on with the freight company and retrieved the painting carton, all intact so that was another bonus.
Left: This quilt, now living back in Lithuania, was a joy to plan. Choosing just the right red and balancing it with a rich solid black was “light bulb moment”. The hand quilting was calming and so satisfying to do.
Above: Enjoyed every moment of stitching this quilt block. Hand appliqué and had quilting. A relaxing time spent creating this.
Left: Marriner’s Sunrise, a challenge but an enjoyable one. Every point appeared as I wanted and the beautiful ombré background turned out better than I dared hope for.
Merry Christmas and Happy quilting!
Our new term starts on 6th January and offers a great opportunity if you are looking to improve your English or learn a new language. The lessons are fun and sociable as we believe this is the best environment in which to learn. In addition to improving your language skills, the classroom is a great place to make new friends and find out about other countries and their cultures.
The Language Centre provides ‘English as a Foreign Language’ to the dependants and families of international officers attending courses at the Defence Academy, Cranfield University and the local community. We also provide tuition in French, Spanish, German and Italian to families across the entire Shrivenham Station site and the local community.
Both group and private lessons are available to suit all abilities, from beginner through to advanced. There is also the opportunity to be tutored in your own home.
So, if you know anyone struggling with the English language –au pairs, overseas visitors for example – please contact us.
INCREASE CONFIDENCE
Everyone who attends English or foreign language lessons regularly can expect to:
· become more confident and fluent in speaking the language
· improve their listening skills
· learn lots of new vocabulary
· make considerable progress in their understanding of grammar
We achieve this by working our way through a coursebook. We also use games, role-plays and short presentations to make learning more effective and enjoyable.
Most of our work is in pairs or small groups.
Students can elect to sit diploma examinations in English from the Cambridge Examination board on completion of their courses and we also run exam preparation lessons.
CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
Specially tailored classes for children are available in your own home.
The Language Centre is open during the day for English classes and in the evening for foreign language tuition.
Find us at:
7 Axis Road, opposite St Alban’s Church. For more information, call us on: 01793 784881 or email: languagecentre7@gmail.com
We offer students 1:1 English and Foreign Language tuition with the option to be taught in the privacy of your own home.

In the first term English students start classes apprehensively and not knowing anyone. Everything is foreign to them. By half-term, students have made connections in class and through a varied schedule of outings and projects.
Turn over the page for more photos of our days out!...
The social programme is fun and, at the same time, improves the language skills of students. Our active social programme includes craft and baking sessions as well as outings. This helps to develop a varied vocabulary as well as learning about different cultures.
This is what one of the English Advanced students wrote about their visit:
On 16th October 2024, Sue AshforthSmith’s class had the pleasure of visiting the charming little village of Bampton for their autumn excursion. Bampton is famous for its 13th century church and village square which have been used as settings for scenes in the Downton Abbey series.
The class then headed to Aston Pottery, which has a beautiful flower garden. The shop is full of magnificent painted earthenware. It’s the perfect place to buy presents, especially as Christmas is approaching.
