Surrey’s Gurpreet Mand acquitted of smuggling heroin into Canada GURPREET Mand of Surrey, who was charged with unlawfully importing heroin and possessing heroin for the purpose of trafficking on August 18, 2017, when 13 kilograms of heroin were found in a suitcase in the trunk of his car as he entered Canada at the Douglas border crossing, has been acquitted by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Neena Sharma. Mand crossed into the U.S. on August 17, 2017, at Blaine, Washington, driving a Hyundai Accent vehicle, a courtesy car which was loaned to him on August 6, 2017, while one of his vehicles was being repaired. Mand, who was a dump truck driver, testified that he crossed the border in order to meet a friend, Pirthi Sidhu, whose truck had broken down, at a rest area close to the border. After carrying out the repairs, he drove back to the border. Canada Border Services Agency officers seized a blue suitcase from Mand’s car that contained 13 bricks of what was later confirmed to be heroin. The bricks of suspected drugs were analysed in late August 2017 by the RCMP and confirmed to be high-grade heroin. Each brick was approximately a kilogram in weight. All but two bricks had purity of over 80%. All bricks were wrapped in layers of plastic. The RCMP tested the seized suitcase and outer wrapping from
Seized heroin. Photo: RCMP each brick of heroin for fingerprints. None of the fingerprints located on the plastic wrap around the heroin originated from Mand. The fingerprints located on the suitcase were not capable of being compared. Also, a pair of black gloves seized from Mand upon his arrest were subjected to forensic examination for drug residue, but no residue was found, according to court documents. Mand agreed in court that when first asked why he went into the

U.S., he said he went to purchase gas. However, he said that by the time he repaired the truck and visited with Sidhu, he decided not to get gas because it was so late and he had to wake early the next day for work. When asked why he did not mention fixing his friend’s truck at any time, he referred to his discomfort speaking English. In her analysis, the judge said: “Mr. Mand testified in a straightforward manner. He never got flustered or frustrated.
He agreed with reasonable propositions put to him during cross-examination, even if they were unfavourable to his position. He provided a thorough explanation of what he did in the United States, including explaining in detail more than once the route he took and the truck repair that he did. As already noted, I found his testimony to be consistent throughout despite being extensively cross-examined. In my view, his testimony had many of the hallmarks of being credible and reliable.” She also said: “I found the reliability of the officers’ testimony to be decreased on a number of points. Importantly, both officers ultimately agreed in crossexamination that Mr. Mand’s version of a number of things said (for example, bag instead of suitcase) was possible.” Interestingly, the ruling noted: “Crown submitted that even if I were to believe that Mr. Mand went across the border to assist Mr. Sidhu, and that he did repair Mr. Sidhu’s truck, that would not be inconsistent with his knowingly importing the heroin, perhaps at Mr. Sidhu’s behest. Crown counsel submitted the facts could fit a scenario where Mr. Sidhu’s truck did fail and he was in desperate need of finding another way to get

SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday said that many residents of Surrey have family and friends in India who have been adversely impacted by the faming bills passed in their ancestral land. He added that the changes affecting the farmers in India threaten their livelihood and their protests have been met with a heavy hand by the Government of India. McCallum said: “I stand in solidarity with the farmers in India and I will be asking Council to do the same at our next Council Meeting on April 12. I will be bringing forth a motion asking Council to support the Indian farmers, many of whom have direct ties with our residents in Surrey.” He pointed out: “With April being Sikh Heritage Month in BC and also marking Vaisakhi, one of the most

I find it plausible that Mr. Sidhu, or someone working under Mr. Sidhu’s direction, put the suitcase with heroin into Mr. Mand’s car while he was repairing Mr. Sidhu’s truck at the Rest Area.” In her conclusion, the judge said that although she “did not completely believe that Mr. Mand did not know about the heroin, I have a reasonable doubt about his knowledge. I also find on the whole of the evidence, when viewed with common-sense and logic at the forefront, that his knowledge of the heroin is not the only inference that

Vancouver’s Khalsa Diwan Society thanks city councillors for supporting Indian farmers
VANCOUVER’S Khalsa Diwan Society has thanked Vancouver City Council members for supporting Indian farmers. The Council approved a resolution, Solidarity with Indian Farmers, at their March 31 meeting. The motion, which was brought forward by Councillor Jean Swanson and supported by Khalsa Diwan Society, was passed by Council. The resolution said: “Vancouver City Council stands in solidarity with the Indian farmers and directs the Mayor to write to the provincial and federal governments and ask them to support Indian citizen’s right to expression and liberty and accelerate the message of concern to the Indian government.” Khalsa Diwan Society President Malkiat Singh Dhami said: “We also

believe his denial of knowing about the heroin; however, I am left with a reasonable doubt about that.” She added: “I have less doubt that he did go to the Rest Area to repair Mr. Sidhu’s truck. That being the case, I am satisfied that the evidence establishes there was opportunity for another person to put the suitcase with heroin into his car, without his knowledge. “Accordingly, I am not satisfied that the only inference that is supported by a common-sense view of all the evidence is that Mr. Mand knew he brought heroin into Canada. ICBC said on Friday that it is on track to mail out all 2.86 million cheques by the end of this month to customers eligible for a share of $600 million in COVID-19-related rebates. Two weeks ago, ICBC began mailing small batches of COVID-19 rebate cheques directly to eligible customers. Large-scale distribution
through the vendor started April 6 and, as of Thursday, April 8, approximately 940,000 cheques had been issued. ICBC said it is proceeding with its third-party vendor, with extra security measures in place, to print and distribute the vast majority of the remaining COVID-19 rebate cheques.
This large mailout, originally scheduled to begin March 15, was delayed due to a cyberattack on the vendor. Most customers who had vehicles insured for all or part of the sixmonth period between April 1 and September 30, 2020, are receiving a COVID-19 rebate averaging $190 per policy. The rebate is approximately
19% of the premium a customer paid for coverage during the sixmonth period. An investigation of the cyberattack confirmed that no ICBC customer information was obtained by unauthorized parties and there were no impacts to ICBC’s systems, which remain secure, the ICBC said.

NRI pensioners write to Trudeau for direct flights between Vancouver/Toronto and Amritsar THE B.C. Chapter of the Association of NRI (Non-Resident Indians) Pensioners Abroad is requesting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reach out to the Indian government to start direct flights between Vancouver/Toronto and Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in light of the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of the ninth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, all over the world this year. They note that there has been an increasing demand for the direct flights by the Punjabi Diaspora, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, students and their extended families, and by the Amritsar Vikas Manch (a community development non profit non governmental organization committed towards the cause for all round development of Amritsar.) In a letter to Trudeau, Harcharan Singh Sandhu, Chief Patron, and Jagrup Singh
Justin Trudeau Khera, Patron, of ANRIPA, BC Chapter, Surrey, point out: “Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) Amritsar has a world record of visitors (over 35 million) in a year. Like Mecca for the followers of the Islam, Darbar Sahib is the most sacred place for the Punjabi Diaspora especially the Sikhs in the world. It is a holy pilgrimage and millions of devotees from all over the world are expected to pay their obeisance at Darbar Sahib during the centennial celebrations. Obviously, Amritsar would be a centre for various types of socioreligious and economic activities during the year and

beyond. In addition, other historic and religious sites at Amritsar like Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Temple, Ram Tirath etc. do also attract visitors from abroad. “It is not a secret that millions of people settled in North American continent travel back and forth to Amritsar and Punjab every year to visit their roots and see their loved ones left behind. Punjabi people settled in Canada and largely in GTA and the lower mainland of B.C. had been pressing hard for a flight from Toronto and Vancouver direct to Amritsar and it is viable and beneficial to both – the operator and the travellers in the present circumstances. “It would be a tribute to the ninth Sikh Guru Shri Teg Bahadur Ji who sacrificed his life to safeguard the “human rights”, mutual love and peace which are the basic characteristics of Canadian society and our nation. India’s national carrier also launched for the first time a direct
flight between Delhi and Vancouver which is open for reservation until March, 2022. These direct flights are a boon to the travellers and going full-load. Even nowadays, these flights fly over Amritsar but do not touch the Amritsar airport. Hence this request to reroute these flights via Amritsar. This decision in honour of 4th Cen-

Stein further highlighted Ambedkar’s immense contribution to the vision of social justice and equality, saying this vision underpins the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “Equality of opportunity and of access—critical to Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of development for all—are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” he said. Now the RCMP and their police force. The RCMP in poodles know that their false sheer revenge this week propaganda that consisted leaked out something about of lies, half-lies and distor- one of the newly appointed tions – including blatant rac- inspectors – who was in the ism against the South Asians RCMP – just to embarrass in Surrey (remember they the Surrey Police Service, uscalled it the “Delhi Police” of ing Locke to speak to the bi“taxi drivers”?) – has all been ased section of mainstream in vain as the Surrey Police media that has been going
after Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum and the new police force like rabid street dogs. Inspector Jeff Metcalfe had a 90-day driving prohibition for being impaired behind the wheel. But the SPS spokesperson noted: “Inspector Metcalfe made full disclosure of the circumstances and has taken complete responsibility for his actions. The Surrey Police is more than satisfied that Inspector Metcalfe will make a strong contribution to the Surrey Police team and appreciates his candor during the interview & hiring process and look forward to welcoming him in May and benefitting from his 24 years of policing service.” The pro-RCMP forces have been getting increasingly desperate as they see that all their barking has not undone the democratic process of establishing the new police force. The mainstream media keeps hurting its own credibility (“fake media”) on this issue. The RCMP – as The VOICE has consistently been exposing them – have leaked out all kinds of personal things
SPS Chief Constable Norm Lipinski Photo: SPS about McCallum, stooping as low as any uncivilized person possibly could, and inspired their poodles to write the rudest possible letters to senior federal and provincial ministers and officials in a disgracefully fascist manner. There is a saying in India that when an elephant passes through a village, all the dogs bark. They bark because that’s all that they can do even as the elephant treats them like garbage! The RCMP should not forget that we the taxpayers are paying $200 million to the poor victims of the perverted male RCMP officers who harassed female RCMP officers and other female RCMP employees. How come Locke and Hundial have had nothing to say about
that? Just recently a young female officer with Richmond RCMP shot herself dead because her senior officer got her pregnant and didn’t want to take responsibility for it. They should know that after having hired 18 senior officers, disbanding the Surrey Police Service will cost Surrey taxpayers millions upon millions of dollars in compensation for those officers. McCallum won the election on the promise of replacing the RCMP with a Surrey Police Service (Surrey is the ONLY big city in Canada without its own police force) and having a SurreyLangley SkyTrain. Now that both promises are being realized, his opponents are messing their pants. (What’s that smell?) Of course, all that Locke and Hundial can say in their defense is that anyone who says anything against them is being PAID to do so. Really? Is that your own guilt being reflected? Shame on you for stooping lower and lower! (VOICE commentary and analysis)

BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond Queensborough IN order to keep people safe and healthy over the last year, we have all made sacrifices – missing out on travelling, celebrations, and seeing loved ones – and changed our daily routines. I’m proud of how British Columbians have risen to this challenge, but after more than a year, I know that many people are tired, and longing for life to go back to normal. A recent rise in cases means that we cannot let down our guard quite yet. But fortunately, we do have reasons to be hopeful about the future. Health Minister Adrian Dix said this week that we’ve gone from a serious situation in long-term care to almost no cases in those settings, which shows that the vaccines are effective. At the time that I’m writing this, over 900,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have already been administered in B.C., which is about one out of every six people in the province. You probably know a few people who have already received theirs. This week, we launched our online vaccine booking system. All adults in B.C. will be able to register and book their vaccine appointment in just a few simple steps when they are eligible. To learn more about the program, visit gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated. Our government is also making it easier for everyone to get the vaccine by introducing job-protected leave for workers to get vaccinated. This means workers can take the time to travel to and from their vaccine appointment or to take a dependent family member to get vaccinated, without worrying about losing their job. Based on our current schedule, every adult in B.C. will have the opportunity to get vaccinated by the end of June. But for the time being, we need to stay the course, and stay committed to keeping
health of our community first and continuing to make safer choices.

Surrey RCMP arrest man who allegedly spat in a security guard’s face SURREY RCMP on Friday said thay had identified and arrested a man in connection with an assault at the Dollarama store in Guildford Mall. Surrey RCMP began investigating this assault after receiving a copy of a video showing an unmasked man spitting in the face of a security guard. On Thursday evening, Surrey RCMP frontline officers identified the suspect and made an arrest. A 43-year-old man of no fixed address was taken into custody and issued fines under the Emergency Program Act for failure to wear a facemask, and abusive and belligerent behaviour. An assault investigation is ongoing. The man was later released. Criminal charges have not yet been laid so the identity of the man is not being released at this time. Investigators are still asking for any witnesses, including the person who filmed the video, to come forward to help advance this investigation. “Thank you to the media and the public for assisting us,” said Sgt. Elenore Sturko, Surrey RCMP Media Relations. “As a result of your help, our officers were able to make significant progress, including identifying a suspect, and making contact with the victim.” “The video of the assault on the security guard was disgusting,” said Superintendent Manly Burleigh, Surrey RCMP Operations Officer. “This type of behaviour is unacceptable – we urge anyone that has experienced this type of violence to report the incident to police.” Anyone with more information, including dashcam footage around the Guildford mall area between 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on April 6 is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2021-50419. Transportation investments key to economic recovery communities. Transportation services like buses and airports will need continued support. The NDP government cancelled the Massey Tunnel Replacement project almost 1,300 days ago, with no clear timelines for when the project will move forward again. There is also the replacement of the Taylor Bridge crossing the Peace River, the transportation access challenges to Royal Columbian Hospital, and improvements to the Brunette Highway 1 interchange in New Westminster, which has also been stagnant under the NDP government. Fraser Valley residents have been waiting years for the muchneeded widening of Highway 1 between Langley and Abbotsford. Rural roads throughout B.C. are deteriorating and in need of significant repair, including due to damage from flooding and landslides. On top of all this, we have the ongoing struggle with Community Benefit Agreements, which are discriminatory and unnecessarily drive up the costs of projects, while dragging down their scope and causing significant delays. This has been the case with the Highway 1 expansions for Salmon Arm West, Chase Creek Road, Illecillewat and Kicking Horse Canyon, along with the Pattullo Bridge Replacement and the Broadway Subway Project.
BY MICHAEL LEE Official Opposition Critic for Transportation, Infrastructure and TransLink & MLA for Vancouver-Langara COVID-19 has changed the ways, frequency, and ability of travel and commuting around our province, and impacted the transportation businesses and services that play essential roles in our daily lives. After months of inaction, and only after significant advocacy from industry and our B.C. Liberal Caucus, the NDP listened to our calls for industry support. They finally delivered grants to bus companies and regional airports that have been hit hard over this past year. Grants to keep businesses from going under are a positive first step, but to advance our province’s economic recovery, we will need to do much more to support the transportation sector. What B.C. really needs is for the NDP government to develop a comprehensive plan to maintain and build our transportation networks and infrastructure. This would include targeted financial relief for operators and investments in much-needed infrastructure. We need the routes that we depend on to be operational through COVID-19 and long into the future. Not only are healthy and viable transportation networks essential for facili-
tating the trade and travel necessary for economic recovery, but investing in our infrastructure will also directly create jobs and stimulate the economy — something B.C. needs right now. In January, I wrote to B.C. Transportation Minister, Rob Fleming, asking if he had a plan to ensure the future security of transportation in B.C. I have yet to receive any indication that he intends to consult with industry stakeholders and develop such a plan. I know that members of the Minister’s own party agree that we need to be planning right now. Vancouver-False Creek NDP MLA, Brenda Bailey has said, “infrastructure planning and building is profoundly important to B.C.’s economy and to our communities, particularly during these trying times.” If this is the position of Minister Fleming’s caucus colleagues, then why is he making so little effort to develop a plan? There is no shortage of transportation services or infrastructure projects in need of attention — ones that could provide tremendous benefit to B.C.
We need the NDP government to prove they have a real vision for transportation, including in Metro Vancouver, where the population is expected to grow by one million people over the next three decades. We need a plan that will ensure the long-term vi-
ability of our critical transportation and trade routes. We also need this government to advocate for B.C.’s fair share of federal funding for well-targeted infrastructure projects. From commuting and daily life, critical care access and facilitating trade, to eventually bringing visi-
tors back to our province — we need safe, efficient and reliable transportation networks. It’s time to end the delays and for this NDP government to make our transportation networks and infrastructure a priority.

Teachers in Fraser Health region want aggressive measures to combat third COVID-19 wave
PRESIDENTS of the 12 local unions representing K–12 public school teachers in the Fraser Health region released the following statement on Thursday:
WE, the undersigned, are calling on Fraser Health to implement more aggressive measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the Fraser Health region, particularly with the increasing prevalence of variants of concern in our region. It is very concerning that BC is now identified by epidemiologists around the world as a ‘hotspot’ for the P1 variant. Our requests are as follows: 1. Change to pandemic phase for safety We are asking that at this time a region-specific phase change to at least Stage 3, to allow for
blended in-person and online learning. It is critical that we support our students and their family with health and safety measures that keep them safe at this time. Timing is of the essence for this action, as secondary schools will change learning groups in a few weeks and hundreds of thousands of kids will be switching cohorts. This poses a substantial increased risk for transmission in schools. The quarter turn around is an opportune moment to implement a phase change to keep our students, their families and staff safe. 2. Masks mandated in K–3 We ask that the mask mandate be extended to include students in Kindergarten to Grade 3. Increased layers of protec-
tion must be made available to everyone, even our youngest. Primary teachers’ school days include close contact with their young students who may not understand the reasons behind why they should limit physical contact. In other community interactions, children as young as 2 must wear a mask, so this should not be a problem for 5–8 year olds to do the same while attending school. 3. Update on teacher vaccination progress We also request more information on the status of teacher vaccinations as essential workers. Surrey teachers have been mostly vaccinated, but we hope the rest of our Fraser Health region teachers will be on track to receive full vaccination as soon as possible.
New 655-seat elementary school in South Newton
A new, energy-efficient elementary school is coming to the South Newton neighbourhood, giving hundreds of Surrey students a modern place to go to school as more education investments are made to support one of B.C.’s fastestgrowing cities. “With new and expanded schools opening throughout Surrey, it’s vital that we keep investing in projects that move students out of portables and into classrooms for a better learning experience,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education, on Thursday. “As our investments continue, we’re also doing our part to build schools in a way that reduces greenhouse gases, so students can have a more modern place to learn and a cleaner, stronger future.” The Government of B.C. is providing $38.9 million to build a new, 655-seat elementary school in South Newton expected to open in 2025, supporting projected growth in the area. The Surrey School District is contributing an additional $5 million. The school will also include a neighbourhood learning centre that will add new before- and after-school child care spaces to the city. “By increasing access to affordable, quality and inclusive child care in Surrey, we’re helping
families, while supporting the economic growth of one of the Lower Mainland’s fastest-growing communities,” said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care. “On-site child care options provide excellent early-learning experiences for children and environmental benefits as well, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by limiting drop-off and pickup locations for parents and optimizing the use of space on school grounds.” The school will be built on 148th Street, adjacent to Goldstone Park. This investment is part of the Province’s progress to reduce the need for portables in Surrey, with nearly $450 million approved for school construction and land purchases in less than four years. These projects are helping to create nearly 9,600 new student spaces in Surrey by 2025. “Families are finally seeing the concrete results of our work to give students in our communities the positive, inspiring and engaging learning experience they deserve – close to home,” said Jinny Sims, MLA for Surrey-Panorama. “We’ve already seen three new schools open this school year alone, and we look forward to more opening in the months and years ahead, as families keep choosing to raise their children in Surrey.”
All along, health officials have assured British Columbians that they will adapt as they learn more about the pandemic and identify problem areas. With
the spreading of much more contagious variants, it is time to adapt and take more aggressive measures to fight COVID-19 in our school communities.
As Local Presidents, we are committed to working with school district and health authority officials to get this important work done.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, passes away London (IANS): Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, passed away on Friday, Buckingham Palace announced. He was 99. “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” the statement said, the BBC reported. He had recently been in hospital.
Hailing from the Greek and Danish families, Prince Philip was also the nephew of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, under whom the country became Independent. Living in Britain and joining the Royal Navy in 1939, he married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became the Queen. The couple had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Their first son, the Prince of Wales, Prince
Charles, was born in 1948, followed by his sister, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, in 1950, the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, in 1960 and the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, in 1964. PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement: “It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of The Duke of Edinburgh. “A man of great service to others – first as a decorated naval officer and later as a dedicated leader in the areas of community engagement and philanthropy – the Duke always sought out the best in people and challenged them to strive for greater heights. “Prince Philip maintained a special relationship with the Canadian Armed Forces and over the years became Colonel-in-Chief of six Canadian units. In 2011, he was named honorary general of the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force, as well as honorary admiral of the Royal Canadian Navy. “The global program that bears his title – the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – has helped empower millions of young people from all backgrounds to realize their greatest potential, and is but one example of his contributions to the social fabric of this country and the world. He was also the patron of more than forty organizations in Canada, including the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute and the Outward Bound Trust. During his last visit to Canada in April 2013, the Duke was named the first-ever Extraordinary Companion of the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada. “Prince Philip was a man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others. He will be fondly remembered as a constant in the life of our Queen – a lifelong companion who was always at her side offering unfailing support as she carried out her duties. “A family has lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at a parade in the role of Royal Marines’ Captain General for the last time at Buckingham Palace in London, Britain on August 2, 2017. (Xinhua/Pool/IANS) Family as they mourn such a significant loss.”
PREMIER John Horgan said in a statement: “Today, I join British Columbians to mourn the passing of Prince Philip, the longest serving royal consort, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s stalwart supporter. “Prince Philip’s long life was defined by his dedication to the Queen, his steadfast devotion to the Commonwealth and its people, as well as his strong support for military regiments and charities, and his championship of conservation and the environment. “He left an indelible mark each and every time he visited British Columbia, whether he was alongside the Queen or on his own. “He will be especially remembered for the important work he did in helping to establish the Khutzeymateen Provincial Park as a sanctuary for grizzly bears. His legacy will also live on through The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which he founded. This prestigious and inspirational achievement program has made a direct and real difference to thousands of young people in our province, and will continue to develop leaders of tomorrow. “On behalf of all British Columbians, I offer my deepest sympathies to Her Majesty The Queen and all members of the Royal Family.”

More than 190 organizations in B.C. receive grant funding to tackle racism
PEOPLE and communities throughout B.C. will have increased capacity to address racism and discrimination, and build intercultural trust and understanding as more than 190 new projects have received support through the BC Multiculturalism Grants program. “Racism is pervasive and it reaches into every corner of our province. The COVID-19 pandemic has only made the situation worse,” said Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives. “That’s why these grants prioritize projects addressing antiIndigenous, anti-Asian and antiBlack racism. These grants will not only help organizations across the province to address systemic racism, but also provide learning
Rachna Singh opportunities to foster better understanding and encourage intercultural conversation in B.C. communities.” Funding for the Multiculturalism Grants Program was increased fourfold to more than $1.2 million in 2020-21 to deliver more
anti-racism initiatives. Priority for these recent grants was given to projects addressing anti-Indigenous, anti-Asian and anti-Black racism. Funding is provided to a range of community-based organizations for projects that build intercultural interaction, trust and understanding, or challenge racism, hate and systemic barriers. Some of the 192 projects receiving a grant include: For the full list of grant recipients, visit our website voiceonline. com. The Vancouver Foundation has also received a one-time grant of $200,000 to support IBPOC-led (Indigenous, Black and people of colour) organizations advancing racial justice and equity throughout B.C.
“This funding will help support IBPOC-led non-profits in their efforts to advance racial equity and justice in their communities,” said Niki Sharma, Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits. “This has been a challenging time and the non-profit sector has been working tirelessly over the last year to meet the increased demand for programs and services.” Quick Facts * For 2020-21, the Province provided a $944,000 one-time boost to the grant funding as part of investments in anti-racism initiatives through StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan. * Other projects receiving funding
as part of StrongerBC include: – a one-time expansion and enhancement of the Resilience BC anti-racism network; – an anti-racism public education campaign; and – a new institutional change program to address systemic discrimination within the public service. * The Province has taken additional steps to tackle racism, including: – committing to introduce a new anti-racism act and legislation on race-based data collection; – reinstating the B.C. Human Rights Commission to promote and protect human rights for all British Columbians; and – launching an investigation into allegations of discrimination in B.C.’s health-care system.

Higher wages coming for B.C.’s lowest paid workers ON June 1, B.C. liquor servers will get a pay boost as the lower liquor server minimum wage is replaced with the general minimum wage of $15.20 an hour. “I’m proud to put an end to the discriminatory minimum wage for B.C. liquor servers, which disproportionally affects women,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “Many of these lowincome workers are the most vulnerable in workplaces, including young women as liquor servers and minorities in low-wage jobs. Raising the minimum wage will bring equity and fairness for workers and make a big difference in the lives of thousands of British Columbians.” This move delivers on a commitment made in 2018 to bring an end to the alternative liquor server minimum wage in B.C.,
Harry Bains 80% of whom are women. June also marks reaching the goal of a $15.20 an hour minimum wage through regular, measured and predictable increases, which was recommended by the Fair Wages Commission in 2018. At that time, B.C. had one of the lowest minimum wages in the country and was one of the most expensive provinces to live in. Nearly 300,000 workers will
get a much-needed pay boost, with the general minimum wage increasing to $15.20 an hour. “Many low-income workers have been essential workers during the pandemic, and it’s only fair they receive the scheduled increase coming to them,” Bains said. The minimum wage rates for live-in camp leaders and resident caretakers are also increasing effective June 1: * general minimum wage increases to $15.20 an hour from $14.60 an hour; * liquor server minimum wage of $13.95 an hour is being replaced with the general minimum wage of $15.20 an hour; * live-in camp leader minimum wage, per day, increases to $121.65 from $116.86; and * resident caretaker minimum wage, per month, increases to
Shootings in Maple Ridge and Coquitlam
RIDGE Meadows RCMP said on Sunday that they are investigating a shots fired call that occurred overnight in 24100-block of 102 Avenue in Maple Ridge. Police are seeking any witnesses. The investigation is in the early stages and police believe this is an isolated incident. There were no injuries. Also, a man in his 20s was shot in broad daylight on Sunday on Howie Avenue at Gatensbury Street in Coquitlam just after 11 a.m. Police found the man on the ground with gunshot
wounds. He is in hospital in serious condition. This is the third shooting in Coquitlam since Monday, March 29, when police found a man with serious injuries in the Maillardville neighbourhood. He was transported to hospital. And on Wednesday, March 31, police had to deal with a shots fired incident at a condo building near the Burnaby-Coquitlam border. There was reportedly an altercation between two men. One of them had a gun and the other a pepper spray, witnesses told the media. One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
$912.28, plus $36.56 per suite for those who manage nine to 60 residential suites and to $3,107.42 for 61 or more suites. As outlined in Bains’ mandate letter from Premier John Hor-
gan, future increases to the minimum wage, starting in 2022, will be based on the rate of inflation to provide predictability going forward.
Quick Facts: * Over 13% of all workers in B.C. earn less than $15 an hour. * Prior to 2011, liquor servers in B.C. were covered under the general minimum wage.

One of those stabbings resulted in Vancouver’s fourth homicide,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Tuesday. “In addition to those calls, there were seven protests over the weekend, three of which needed police attendance and organization.” A few calls of note: On the morning of April 4, officers responded to East 12th Avenue and Slocan Street for reports of a fully engulfed RV fire. A 29-year-old woman was able to escape, however, a man in his 50s did not make it out and was found deceased. The woman was transported to hospital for second-degree burns. Preliminary evidence does not indicate the death of the man to be suspicious, however, the BC Coroners Service will be conducting an investigation. VPD arson investigators will also investigate the origin of the fire. Just after 6 p.m., staff from St. Paul’s Hospital called 9-1-1 to report that a man with serious stab wounds had been admitted to the emergency room. An investigation led officers to determine the man was picked up by a cab in the unit block of East Hastings Street. No arrests have been made at this time. The victim remains in hospital in serious condition. The file remains under investigation. At 7 p.m., VPD officers responded to Strathcona Park for reports of a 41-year-old man who had been stabbed. The man was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made and the file remains under investigation. Later that evening at around 10 p.m., offi-
cers were flagged over in the unit block of West Hastings Street for reports of a man possibly suffering from a drug overdose. BC Ambulance Service arrived on scene and found stab wounds while performing chest compressions. The man was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries. No arrests have been made and the file is under investigation. At around 3:30 a.m. on April 5 in the unit block of East Hastings Street, officers came across a victim who stated he had been attacked by four men and was stabbed by one of them. No arrests have been made at this time. The file remains under investigation. At 11 p.m., VPD’s Emergency Response Team assisted patrol officers in arresting a man on a Canada-wide warrant. The man is also under investigation for firearms trafficking. At the time of arrest, officers found a handgun in the suspect’s suitcase. The file remains under investigation. Just after midnight on April 6, a man called police and claimed that he had been randomly attacked by a man with a long metal pipe at Oak Street and West 24th Avenue. When police arrived, they found the man suffering from a large gash on his forehead, a broken arm and what were believed to be broken ribs. He was transported to hospital, where he remains in stable condition. “In addition to the priority calls that came in, officers responded to several calls under the Emergency Measures Act for unlawful gatherings,” added Visintin. “This included two restaurants that disobeyed the guidelines set out by the Provincial Health Officer.” If anyone was any information related to these files, call the Vancouver Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-2228477.

Prime Minister Modi hails social service by Sikhs, calls for proper research New Delhi (IANS): Hailing the social service by Sikh community and gurdwaras all over the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stressed the need to do “proper research and documentation” on this aspect of the Sikh tradition. The Prime Minister expressed his views while chairing the meeting of the High-Level Committee to commemorate 400th Birth Anniversary (Prakash Purab) of Guru Tegh Bahadur--ninth of the ten Gurus who founded the Sikh religion and was the head of the followers of Sikhism from 1665 until his beheading in 1675. Addressing the meeting via video conferencing, the Prime Minister highlighted that it is important
to make the younger generation understand the teaching and lessons from the life of Guru Tegh Bahadur, and noted that through
Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clear the state governments proposal for launching various projects worth Rs 9,370 million, including the development of Anandpur Sahib as a Smart City, to pay tributes to Guru Tegh Bahadur, whose 400th Prakash Purab is being celebrated this year. Participating virtually in the high-level national committee meeting convened by the Prime Minister to finalise the plans to celebrate the 400th Prakash Purab, the Chief Minister said, “We are all fortunate to celebrate this great event in our lifetimes and I urge Modi ji to ensure that this historic event is commemorated not only at the national level, but also at the global level.”
He said Guru Tegh Bahadur, also known as Hind Di Chadar, stands as a shining symbol of the country’s great pluralistic tradition and secularism, and his supreme sacrifice forms an important part of India’s history. Briefing the Prime Minister on the memorandum sent to the Centre in this regard, Amarinder Singh said his government plans to duly recognise the towns and villages associated with the life of Guru Tegh Bahadur in the state by upgrading their infrastructure. Besides the city of Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Baba Bakala are significant in this regard, he said. In addition, he said that there are 78 villages in the state which were graced by the Guru. Amarinder Singh said the proposal sent by the state government includes projects for
digital means, it is easier to reach out to the younger generation world over to spread the message. Elaborating on the discussions in the meeting, the Prime Minister said that to connect more and more people to commemorate the 400th Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur, various activities will be organized throughout the year. Modi said that the organisation of activities should be such that not only the life and teachings of Guru Tegh Bahadur, but of the entire Guru Tradition is propagated world over. He later hailed the social service by Sikh community and gurdwaras all over the world and said that “proper research and documentation on this aspect of
the Sikh tradition should be done”. Prime Minister said that the Sikh Guru tradition is a complete life philosophy in itself. It is the privilege and good fortune of the government that it has got the opportunity to celebrate the 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev, the 400th Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur and the 350th Prakash Purab of Guru Gobind Singh. The High-Level Committee was constituted by the Central government on October 24 last year to approve policies, plans and programs related to the commemoration of the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur along with supervision of the events.
Clear Rs 9,370 million projects relating to Guru Tegh Bahadur: Punjab Chief Minister
Amarinder Singh development of infrastructure in and around Anandpur Sahib, Amritsar and Baba Bakala; rejuvenation of village ponds and traditional water bodies for water conservation in 78 villages that were visited by the Guru; and
setting up Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur School of Textile Technology and Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Handicrafts at the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and Sathiala, Baba Bakala, respectively. The Chief Minister further requested the Prime Minister that the Union government should release a special commemorative stamp on this occasion. He suggested that the commemorative events should be held across the country, as well as at all Indian missions abroad, in order to carry forward the powerful message of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life. Amarinder Singh informed the Prime Minister that the details of the main programme on May 1 are being finalised, keeping in mind the COVID-19 situation in the country, particularly in Punjab.

2021 Acura TLX Type S sells out its on-line Canadian allotment Markham, ON. - The most anticipated performance sedan in Acura’s history, the 2021 TLX Type S, the first Type S to return to Acura showrooms in over a decade, pre-sold its 119 unit, on-line Canadian allotment in a mere 8 hours. Performance and luxury vehicle enthusiasts were encouraged to become one of the first to purchase the exclusive and sought after TLX Type S by visiting https://acura.ca/ preorder#tlxtypes, and they did so in droves. Securing their $2500 deposit with an Acura
dealer and reserving the first TLX Type S sedans to be delivered in Canada this June. The good news is consumers can still get
their hands on the utmost in Precision Crafted Performance. Although all on-line 2021 TLX Type S units are now reserved, customers can contact their local Acura dealer to order or go to www.acura.ca and put their name on the waiting list to get their hands on a Type S. Just 240 units in total will be available in Canada. Building on the award-winning second-generation Acura TLX, which went on sale in September, the TLX Type S debuts a brandexclusive turbocharged V6 engine, sporttuned chassis with double wishbone front suspension and powerful Brembo® brakes to become the quickest and best-handling Type S in Acura history. Powering the 2021 TLX Type S, is an all-new 3.0-litre Type S Turbo V6 which builds upon
decades of performance engine development experience and motorsports prowess to produce 355 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque – making it the most powerful Type S yet. A double-wishbone front suspension and Type S-exclusive Sport+ driving mode also have been specially engineered to provide additional performance and driver enjoyment, and for the first time in a Type S model, power is distributed through Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system with true torque vectoring. When it arrives at showrooms in June, the well-equipped 2021 Acura TLX Type S will carry a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) around $60,000
GENESIS X CONCEPT UNVEILED
LOS ANGELES, California, Genesis Motors recently released the Genesis X Concept, an EV-based GT (Gran Turismo) concept car. “The car that we are unveiling is a concept car that embodies the essential elements that Genesis pursues in its designs. Please take a moment to meet the future of Genesis design through this concept car, which embodies our brand’s progressive and audacious spirit” said Jay Chang, Global Head of the Genesis Brand. The Genesis X Concept is the brand’s fifth concept car, following the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint concepts, and epitomizes its new take on sustainable luxury car design. In particular, the new concept car is a highperformance GT that maximizes use of the Two Lines design element that Genesis is known for. The Two Lines theme, which is applied throughout the interior and exterior, including electric charging devices, embodies the design language of future Genesis EV models. The name ‘Genesis X’ is a combination of Genesis and the letter X, which symbolizes a “hidden hero.” “The Genesis X Concept can be described as the ultimate vision of Athletic Elegance, the inherent design language of Genesis,” said SangYup Lee, Head of Genesis’ Global Design. “The signature Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be blueprints for the futuristic designs and state-of-the-art technologies that Genesis seeks to adopt in its future models.”
The front of the Genesis X features a low, yet broad silhouette thanks to the combination of the shield-shaped Crest Grille, which represents the brand’s inherent dignity and pride, and the two-lined headlamps, which cut through the wheel arch. The double-layered bumpers also create a strong impression. In particular, the two-lined Quad Lamps symbolize Genesis’ unparalleled technology and design. Moreover, a three-dimensional G-Matrix pattern was applied to the sharp and intricate metal structure of the Crest Grille, the symbol of Genesis, to accentuate the imagery of a futuristic electric car. The internal pattern of the grille has been painted in the same color as the exterior in order to create a sense of unity. Furthermore, the Genesis X presents a simple, yet sophisticated image by integrating the hood and the fender to create a single panelbased Clamshell hood, resulting in one clean, sensual and uninterrupted surface. Furthermore, while the slick, slide-to-open charging door, which features no parting lines, creates a progressive and high-tech image, the Two Lines design element is emphasized through the two-lined lights around the charging port.

40% of Canadians want housing prices to continue to rise, 39% want them to fall NOT long after COVID-19 lockdowns began in May 2020, the head of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation predicted a worst-case scenario wherein housing prices would plummet as much as 18 per cent. Instead, the opposite occurred. Average home prices in the country rose 25 per cent between this and last February. Now, with the housing market “on steroids” across the country, Canadians are taking sides. A new study from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds 40 per cent of Canadians hopeful that housing prices continue to escalate, while 39 per cent are banking on a fall. One-in-five (22%) would like to see the average home price drop by an astounding 30 per cent or more. Notwithstanding the staggering knock-on effects of a housing crash of such magnitude on almost every other aspect of the Canadian economy, it is an undeniable indicator of the amount of housing pain people in this country are experiencing coast to coast, in large communities and small. Three-in-five (57%) rural dwellers say housing prices in their community are too high, alongside two-thirds (67%) of those who live in small cities. These levels rise above seven-in-ten among urban and suburban Canadians. Given these sentiments, the Angus Reid Institute
researchers collated data into a Housing Pain Index to understand the experiences and trials of Canadians who are either priced out or trying to maintain the value of their investments. This study takes an in depth look at Canadians in four groups: The Happy, Comfortable, Uncomfortable, and Miserable. While those who are suffering the most housing pain tend to be younger and lower-income, each of these four groups is well represented in all regions of the country. The Happy (13% of the population) are those who have little stress when it comes to housing: * They’re older and higher-income * Most likely to own a home and to have purchased that home more than 15 years ago * Most (73%) do not currently pay a mortgage

When it comes to skills, experience and results, VERICO Superior Mortgage Inc.’s Sharnjit Gill is incomparable
Sharnjit Gill
VERICO Superior Mortgage Inc.’s Sharnjit Gill’s outstanding financial skills and solid experience have made him matchless – and the results speak for themselves. His is a story that spans more than half a century, beginning in Punjab where he worked for India’s United Commercial Bank (UCO Bank). In view of his sterling performance, he was selected for an overseas posting to London. “That was a very prestigious posting – that changed my life,” he told The VOICE. From London he came to Surrey, Canada, in 1995 and in spite of the recession, he got appointed as Financial Services Manager in Bank of Montreal’s Scottsdale Branch. After four years at the Bank of Montreal, Gill said he saw the opportunity to work for himself. So he resigned and started working as an independent mortgage broker in 2001. His company was ranked the Top Mortgage Broker with Envision Credit Union in 2002. “And we have never looked back after that,” he added. Then year after year, his company maintained their top position with the TD Bank, Envision Credit Union and Coast Capital. His main focus was only “to educate, educate, educate my clients.” He added: “We were different from other mortgage brokers because I had banking experience plus mortgage.” In a recent interview to a publication, he recalled how he used to start early morning on weekends handing out pamphlets to addresses close to his home and his office. He added: “We would review what kind of response we got from that

area in the following 7-10 days.” And in place of having a community paper put their flyers, they found out where those community newspapers were dropped and put their pamphlets in themselves. “We did this for the first two or three years of becoming independent. It really helped spread our name for our business in our community,” he added. Gill told the publication: “My parents taught me a simple thing: work more than you are paid for. And we work very hard for every one of our clients. Educating and maintaining transparency with our clients really helps. This approach makes the client realize we are working for them
and not for the bank, which helps in not only closing the said deal but
also retaining the client for future needs.”
