David Sidoo among several Canadians charged with alleged securities fraud by U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission VANCOUVER businessman David (Dave) Sidoo is in hot water once again. He along with Ronald Bauer a/k/a Ronald J. Bauer and Ronald Jacob Bauer, Craig James Auringer, Alon Friedlander, Massimilano Pozzoni, Daniel Mark Ferris, Petar Dmitrov Mihaylov, and Adam Christopher Kambeitz have been charged by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with alleged securities fraud that generated $145 million in proceeds of crime. The Commission has filed a complaint in the Southern District of New York. British Columbia issuer American Helium Inc. is one of the public companies they are alleged to have used for securities fraud. The VOICE first reported this news on its website voiceonline.com last week on April 14 – ahead of all mainstream media. According to the complaint, “this case concerns a fraudulent scheme comprising a series of highly profitable “pump-anddumps” of the stock of at least seventeen publicly-traded companies quoted on U.S. markets.” It states: “From at least 2006 and continuing until at least 2020 (the “Relevant Period”), the Defendants

UBC’s Sukhman Sandhu selected by Fraser Valley Bandits THE Fraser Valley Bandits announced Tuesday that the club has selected Sukhman Sandhu from the University of British Columbia (UBC) — and Thomas Kennedy from the University of Windsor — at the 2022 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) U SPORTS Draft. Sandhu was chosen by the Bandits with the fourth pick in the second round. He formerly attended Tamanawis Secondary in Surrey, B.C., and is coming off the best season of his U SPORTS career after playing his previous three years at the University of the Fraser Valley (2016-19). The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 16.2 points and 7.1 rebounds on 30-of-60 shooting from three-point territory in just 23.3 minutes played per game. Sandhu’s deadeye shooting from long range placed him first in three-point percentage in all of Canada among players with a minimum of 50 attempts. “I am pleased to welcome Thomas and Sukhman to the Bandits organization. Both have proven that they are two of Canada’s most skilled college or university players and I am looking forward to watching them develop and showcase their talents this summer,” Bandits President Dylan Kular said. “The CEBL U SPORTS Draft

SIDOO had also denied all the allegations about his role in the infamous U.S. college admissions scam a few years ago. In March 2019, Sidoo was accused of paying William ‘Rick’ Singer, who prosecutors say was behind the

scheme to help wealthy families get their children’s entrance to prestigious U.S. schools, to have Mark Riddell write SATs for his sons in 2011 and 2012, besides a high school graduation exam. The older son got admission to a private university in California. The younger son went to the University of California-Berkeley. In July 2020, he said: “I make no excuses, I broke the law,” as he was sentenced to 90 days in jail, minus four days for time served, after pleading guilty in a Boston, Massachusetts court for his role in the scam. Sidoo also had to pay a US$250,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton said Sidoo committed a crime that displayed “an unbelievable lack of integrity, morality and common sense.” However, the judge found “extenuating circumstances,” noting Sidoo’s philanthropy.

He was released from a U.S. prison on December 17, 2020. Sidoo’s membership in the Order of British Columbia was terminated June 12, 2020, after the former Canadian Football League player pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in a U.S. federal court on March 13, 2020. Sidoo was a highly successful businessman, a leading philanthropist and a highly decorated athlete. He is one of the few who have been inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame, the BC Football Hall of Fame and the BC Sports Hall of Fame. He captained UBC to the university’s first Vanier Cup national championship in 1982 and played six seasons in the Canadian Football League CFL (1983-89) with Saskatchewan Roughriders and BC Lions. The Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium was named in his honour. But now the name has been removed.

and American Helium Inc.). Like others, Sidoo used offshore omnibus vehicles and front companies to conceal the fact that he was the beneficiary of stock sales, and failed both to disclose his beneficial ownership and trading and to register his stock sales as legally required.” You can read the complex details in the complaint by visiting our website for the link. This news is based on the complaint filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and nothing has been proved in court. Sidoo, through his lawyer, has denied all these allegations.

ON December 15, 2020, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of a collision involving two motor vehicles and a pedestrian near 144th Street and 61A Avenue. Police said at the time that early indications were that an unoccupied cargo truck rolled into traffic where it struck a vehicle. The unoccupied cargo truck then continued travelling onto the sidewalk and struck a female pedestrian. Surrey Fire Service and BC Ambulance Service also responded to the collision. Despite all attempts to revive the pedestrian, she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with police. The victim was identified as Paramjit Masutta, 48, who saved her eight-

Paramjit Masutta year-old twin daughters by pushing them out of the way either side as the vehicle approached her. Now, two years later, her husband, Daljit Singh Masutta and his family, have filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme

Court, seeking damages from the truck’s driver as well as Amazon and two logistics companies — Foss National Leasing and Damy Logistics. According to the lawsuit filed last month and first reported by thelogic. com and CBC, the truck’s driver failed to take reasonable steps to avoid the collision, and his employer — either Amazon or the two logistics companies — did not train him properly to do his task. These are only allegations and have not been proven in court. The driver and the companies have not filed a statement of defence. The lawsuit alleges that the delivery truck was parked illegally and facing the wrong direction on 144 Street with the handbrake off. The driver was not present when the incident

occurred. Masutta, who was walking home from school with her daughters, managed to push them both out of the way of the truck, but was dragged under the vehicle after being hit, according to the suit. It is alleged that the driver’s employers failed to have the delivery truck equipped with proper braking systems or warning devices. The suit seeks damages for the loss of “guidance and companionship” that Masutta provided to her family. A simultaneous suit has also been filed by the victim’s family against ICBC, seeking to cover damages including the funeral costs and counselling costs associated with her death. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

ON December 2, 2017, Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) officers at Coutts in Alberta intercepted a commercial vehicle hauling produce from California that was destined for an Alberta business. While examining the cab of the vehicle, officers found bricks of suspected cocaine which the CBSA said at the time was the largest suspected cocaine seizure recorded by CBSA officers in Alberta. There were 84 bricks of cocaine weighing about 99.5 kilograms including packaging. Two travellers, the driver and a passenger, were arrested and turned over to the RCMP. On December 4, 2017, the RCMP charged Gurminder Singh Toor, then 31, of California and Kirandeep Kaur Toor, then 26, of California on four counts each

The Toors from California sentenced in Alberta for smuggling 84 kg of cocaine at Coutts, Alberta border

under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The two were sentenced in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench on April 13, 2022.

In April 2021, Gurminder Toor had been convicted by a jury of importing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Last week, Justice Johnna Kubik gave him a global sentence of 10 years in prison, according to the Lethbridge News Now. Kirandeep Toor was also convicted on the importing charge but was found guilty of the lesser charge of simple possession. She received a sentence of nine years in custody. The judge noted that while sentencing the two, the impact on their family structure and immigration status had also to be considered. The India-born couple had moved to the U.S. at separate points in their lives. Gurminder Toor is an American citizen while Kirandeep Toor’s U.S. green card expired as she waited for her trial. The judge said that after completing their prison terms,

Gurminder and Kirandeep Toor he will likely be deported to the U.S., while she will face deportation to India. Kirandeep Toor is also pregnant with the couple’s second child.

Rajkumar Subramaniam’s meth-smuggling conviction overturned; new trial ordered THE B.C. Court of Appeal has overturned the conviction of Rajkumar Subramaniam, who had been found guilty by a B.C. Supreme Court jury in October 2019 of smuggling 14.79 kilograms of methamphetamine across the Canada-U.S. border in July 2014.

The court ordered a new trial. The jury heard that on July 1, 2014, Subramaniam attempted to cross the Pacific Highway border crossing from the U.S. into B.C. in a Mitsubishi Montero. A search of his vehicle, Canada Border Services Agency

officers found hidden wiring and a device called a “DroneMobile” concealed in the dashboard, which allowed for GPS tracking of the Montero and remote unlocking of its doors. When the officers ultimately gained access to the compartment, they found 33 packages wrapped in brown tape. Subramaniam was arrested and the packages, a BlackBerry device, paystubs, and receipts, were seized. The packages were later confirmed to contain 14.79 kilograms of methamphetamine, with an approximate wholesale value of $375,000 or a street value of $1.5 million. At the trial, both the Crown and the defence agreed that the key issue was whether Subramaniam knew of the secret compartment and that it contained a controlled substance. Subramaniam testified that he had no knowledge of the DroneMobile device, the secret compartment where the drugs were located, or the methamphetamine. In closing submissions, the defence argued that the appellant had unwittingly trafficked methamphetamine across the border, as he had no knowledge of the drugs and did not

notice anything unusual about the vehicle. The defence theory was that the real individuals involved in the drug scheme were the appellant’s brother and two of the brother’s alleged associates, and that these individuals used the DroneMobile device to facilitate trafficking. In support of this theory, the defence relied on evidence of the timing of Subramaniam’s crossing into the U.S. and the details of his purchase of the Montero. The jury was provided with both oral and written instructions. The jury found Subramaniam guilty of the drug offences and the B.C. Supreme Court judge handed him an eight-year jail term. A three-judge panel of the B.C. Court of Appeal found that the judge’s instructions to the jury were confusing. Justice Patrice Abrioux said: “There was a reasonable likelihood that the jury may have misapprehended the standard of proof by concluding that a proven fact, for example, the appellant’s knowledge regarding the secret compartment and what CONTINUED ON 5

Invitations for candidates to apply for permanent residence will begin in early July Recent international graduates with expiring temporary status will get an opportunity to stay in Canada longer

SEAN Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Friday announced that Express Entry draws will soon resume and that invitations for candidates to apply for permanent residence will begin in early July. Travel restrictions throughout most of 2020 and 2021 delayed the processing of overseas applications, which led to an increase in the size of the processing inventory. To manage this inventory, the government temporarily paused invitations to apply under the federal high-skilled streams, including the Canadian experience class, federal skilled worker class and federal skilled trades class. Invitations to apply will resume in early July, and the vast majority of new applications will be processed within the six-month service standard. As a result of the temporary pause, the federal high-skilled processing inventory has been cut by more than half, decreasing from approximately 111,900 people in September 2021 to just 48,000 people by March 2022. This inventory will be further reduced by July 2022, allowing the government to return to the service standards that its clients expect. Fraser also announced a new temporary policy that will give recent international graduates with expiring temporary status an opportunity to stay in Canada longer, so that they can continue to gain work experience and have a better chance at qualifying for permanent residency. Starting in summer 2022, former international students who are in Canada and have a post-graduation work permit expiring between January and December 2022 will qualify for an additional open work permit of up to 18 months. The government is exploring a simplified, expeditious process for this, and details will be made available in the weeks ahead. Fraser noted that these talented and skilled CONTINUED FROM 4 it contained, was a factual issue, to be established on a balance of probabilities as opposed to an essential element of the offence to be proven by the Crown beyond

Photo: Twitter international graduates play a vital role in addressing Canada’s labour shortage, and those nearing the end of their post-graduation work permit are already well-integrated into Canada’s labour market and work in key industries across the country. Tens of thousands are able to successfully transition to permanent residence each year, including more than 157,000 former students who became permanent residents in 2021, with more than 88,000 of them transitioning directly from a post-graduation work permit to permanent status. This additional open work permit will allow applicants to continue contributing to the Canadian economy, helping address Canada’s labour shortage while gaining valuable work experience and preparing their Express Entry profiles. To help bring even more skilled workers quickly to Canada, the government has doubled the number of permanent residence decisions made in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same time period in 2021. From January 1, 2022 to March 31, 2022, the government made over 156,000 final deci-

sions on permanent residence applications and, through these efforts, Canada welcomed over 113,000 new permanent residents in the first quarter of 2022. The government has also processed more than 100,000 work permit applications in the first quarter of 2022, nearly doubling the number processed over the same time period in 2021. Through another temporary public policy implemented in August 2020, foreign nationals in Canada as visitors have been able to apply for an employer-specific work permit without having to leave Canada. Recognizing that those with visitor status in Canada may also wish to stay and find meaningful employment, this temporary public policy has been extended to February 28, 2023. Finally, the Fraser announced new measures for those who applied for permanent residence through the temporary resident to permanent resident pathway last year. The limited-time pathway was launched in 2021 to invite a broad range of individuals already working in Canada to apply to stay permanently. While closed to new applications since November 2021, the processing of applications will continue for some time. Taking effect this summer, the policy changes announced on Friday include: * Applicants will no longer be required to remain in Canada while their application is being processed. * Applicants who apply for an open work permit while waiting for their permanent residence application to be finalized will be able to get work permits valid until the end of 2024. This will ensure that all permanent residence applications will be finalized before applicants will need to apply to extend their temporary status again. * To support family reunification, immediate family members who are outside Canada and who were included in a principal applicant’s permanent residence application will

be eligible for their own open work permit. These measures support the government’s broader effort to ensure Canadian employers have the workers they need while addressing our labour shortage, and build on Minister Qualtrough’s recent announcements on the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program Workforce Solutions Road Map. Fraser said: “With the economy growing faster than employers can hire new workers, Canada needs to look at every option so that we have the skills and labour needed to fuel our growth. Immigration will be crucial to easing our labour shortage, and these measures aim to address pressing needs in all sectors across the country, while providing more opportunities for recent graduates and other applicants to build their lives in Canada and continue contributing to our short-term recovery and long-term prosperity.”

a reasonable doubt.” She added: “To put the matter another way, in my view there was a realistic possibility that, having been instructed that it must find facts if they were probably true, the jury could have grounded their con-

viction on the basis that the Crown had established knowledge based on a standard of probably true facts. This would be contrary to the correct approach whereby, having considered all of the evidence—including that which they did

not believe—the jury was satisfied that the Crown had proven the essential elements of the offences beyond a reasonable doubt.” The other two justices agreed with Abrioux.

Sean Fraser

Quick Facts * Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system for those seeking to immigrate permanently through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian experience class and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program. Through Express Entry, candidates submit profiles that are ranked, and periodically, applicants with the highest ranking points are invited to apply for permanent residence. * About 95,000 post-graduation work permits expire between January 31 and December 31, 2022. While many former students with expiring work permits have already transitioned to permanent residence, applied for permanent residence or successfully applied for a different type of work permit, the government anticipates as many as 50,000 applicants could benefit from this temporary measure.

Daughter of Baljit Kaur Kondolay appeals to public to sign petition opposing parole for her killer TWENTY-FOUR years ago — on April 19 — Baljit Kaur Kondolay, 37, was shot to death in her Langley driveway and her daughter, Rupy Sidhu, is appealing to the public to sign a petition demanding no parole for her mother’s killer, Sukhjit Singh Grewall, that will be presented with her victim impact statement: https://www.change.org/NoParoleforSukhjitGrewall The petition has been signed by more than 1,890 people and her aim is to get 2,500 signatures. Grewall’s hearing is coming up in June and Sidhu will be closing the petition at the end of May to submit to the parole board for consideration. She and her family were informed earlier this year by letter from the Correctional Services of Canada that Sukhjit Gerwall had submitted an ‘Application for Work Release.’ They were also informed by another letter that he was scheduled for his ‘Day Parole Hearing’

in January 2001 to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years. Crown prosecutor Sean Madigan told the court that Baljit was shot at point-blank range “in the forehead, leaving a huge hole, then shot her in the ear.”

Ajit Grewall was still legally married to his previous wife when he wed Baljit, who came from a wealthy farming valley. There was evidence that he was in a tight financial situation and he stood to gain financially from Baljit’s death.

Surrey’s Panorama Ridge Secondary’s Punjabi classes put on grand Vaisakhi celebration PANORAMA Ridge Secondary students were among the many schools in Surrey School District who participate in their own Vaisakhi festivities to recognize and honour the cultural celebration on Thursday. For the first time since the pandemic, the school’s Punjabi 10, 11 and 12 classes hosted a schoolwide celebration that included dancing, performances, cultural displays and traditional food to showcase and share Indian culture with the school community. In attendance were Minister of Education Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour Harry Bains, Surrey Board of Education Trustees Terry Allen and Bob Holmes, SurreyGuildford MLA Gary Begg, Surrey Teachers’ Association President Jatinder Badh-Bir, Superintendent Mark Pearmain, Deputy Superintendent Andrew Holland and Assistant Superintendent Jacob Sol. “Vaisakhi is a significant celebration for many of our students and an important event in highlighting the diversity in our district,” said Laurie Larsen, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “In schools as multicultural as ours, it’s imperative we recognize, learn about and celebrate different cultures not just through special events, but in the

classroom year round.” Satvinder Randhawa, who teaches Punjabi 11 at Panorama Ridge, said Vaisakhi is an important celebration for South Asian students to embrace their ancestry, noting Vaisakhi also falls during Sikh Heritage Month and is celebrated by Sikh and Hindu Canadians. “It’s for the students to have a deeper appreciation – ‘This is my cultural background, this is my heritage,’” she said. “It’s a very

important day for everybody to connect to their roots and know the meaning behind these traditions, why we carry on these festivities and what they teach us.” Randhawa also said events like Vaisakhi foster a sense of community among all students, which is increasingly important in the wake of the pandemic to encourage togetherness after so much time apart. “Celebrations at school are very important because they bring all the students together

and nurture a deeper cultural understanding about the traditions and values of other cultures,” she said. “It’s really important that all the students get together and share a feeling of well-being, of happiness, of festivity. It’s much required now.” For more photos, visit our website voiceonline.com (From Surrey Schools)

Federal NDP holds town hall to talk about ways to fight against hate FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and NDP House Leader Peter Julian on Wednesday held a town hall to talk about the rising threat of all forms of hate in communities and how to fight back. Hundreds of people joined the town hall to listen to guest speakers Bernie Farber, Chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, Dr. Barbara Perry, Director of the Center on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the Ontario Tech University, Pandit Roopnauth Sharma, President of the Canadian Multifaith Federation and President of the Hindu Federation. “We must continue to work together towards a society that is welcoming and safe for everyone to live,” said Singh. “Too often, we hear stories of people being subjected to hateful speech, psychological and physical violence because of who they are. We need to fight head on against Islamophobia, anti-semitism and racism in all its forms. The

cate hate. We need a change in mindset. We need to appreciate the solidarity of humanity. We need to see the value in respecting and loving all equally.” Farber noted: “We live in a time where hatred seems to be all around us. The sight of Nazi hooked crosses and Confederate flags along with other symbols of racism and extremism have even found their way to Parliament Hill. This needs to end. Bill C-229 sponsored by NDP MP Peter Julian can be one of the tools in our anti-hate toolbox that gives a clear message: Canadians wont tolerate hate.” Perry stressed: “At a time when hate is flourishing online and offline, it is imperative that we condemn the symbols of hate that create solidarity among hate mongers and instil fear in targeted communities. This is but one step among many that we must take to push back against those who would divide us.”

As part of the NDP’s effort to tackle systemic racism and discrimination, earlier this year, Julian tabled a bill that would prevent anyone from selling and displaying symbols that promote hatred. The symbols that would be banned are Swastikas and other Nazi emblems of the genocidal regime, Klu Klux Klan symbols and the Confederate flag, symbols of slavery, racism and of white supremacy. “Symbolic gestures don’t eliminate hateful and violent crimes against Indigenous people, Black, Asian and other marginalized communities,” said Julian. “We need real action with tangible objectives. People are tired of hearing pretty words. They want their government to stop the spread of hate in our communities. And this bill is one of the tools that the NDP is putting forward to combat hate, racism, discrimination and extremism.” Sharma said: “Words alone cannot eradi-

Double regional bus service, more rapid transit, more cycling TRANSLINK and the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation on Wednesday released Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities, detailing priority investments to meet the increasing demand for transit and support the transportation needs of Metro Vancouver’s growing population. The proposed 10-Year Priorities is the next step to implement the ambitious goals and targets set out in Transport 2050, Metro Vancouver’s recently approved 30-year Regional Transportation Strategy. Proposed investments detailed in the 10-Year Priorities include: * Doubling regional bus service levels * Up to 170 kilometres of new rapid transit on up to 11 corridors, including: – Up to nine Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes using new zero-emission buses on dedicated, traffic-separated lanes – A rapid transit connection to the North Shore – The Burnaby Mountain Gondola to SFU – The Millennium Line SkyTrain extension from Arbutus to UBC * Exploring other potential SkyTrain extensions, including Newton in Surrey and Port Coquitlam * Building 450 kilometres of new traffic-separated cycling paths The Transport 2050 Strategy concluded that there is an urgent and widespread need to address climate change, housing affordability, and traffic congestion by increasing and improving transit service as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. With Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities, TransLink is proposing an expansion of the SkyTrain network, an unprecedented increase in local

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus service, and introducing highcapacity Bus Rapid Transit. This new zero-emissions bus-based rapid transit could be deployed along high-demand corridors throughout Metro Vancouver at a fraction of the cost and time compared to railbased technology. In addition to Transport 2050: 10Year Priorities, TransLink is also releasing the 2022 Investment Plan, which aims to stabilize funding over the next three years. TransLink is accepting comments from the public on both the 2022 Investment Plan and Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities starting April 20. Visit translink.ca/priorities to take the survey until May 4. Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities Facts: Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities is a blueprint that identifies the region’s top priorities, so they can get started right away on the first 10 years of Transport 2050 investments, which will be funded through future Investment Plans. It is an update to the Mayors’ Council’s 2014 Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation. The proposal includes: * The fast deployment of rapid transit: up to nine new traffic-separated Bus Rapid Transit lines * More than doubling bus service

minorities who have their own media sources) and the SCREECHING minority of those who want to keep the Ottawa-controlled RCMP in the city, the SILENT majority has remained solidly loyal to McCallum. This is especially because of keeping his promises to replace the RCMP with a municipal police force – SURREY POLICE SERVICE – and the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Extension.

BOTH promises are now being implemented and there is NOTHING that can reverse these. Hey, councillors Brenda Locke and Jack Hundial, STOP misleading people to believe this can be undone – it CAN’T! Surrey-ites MUST NOT waste their votes on any candidates who try to tell them that they will undo these two monumental, vital projects. So why are the RCMP bosses — and the RCMP union that funded the joke of a referendum that FAILED MISERABLY and got exposed along with their poodles – so SCARED of the RCMP being booted out of Surrey? Because once the Surrey change is complete, it will send a message all across Canada that it is POSSIBLE to boot out the COLONIAL RCMP and replace it with a police force supervised by the city or the province. MORTAL ENEMIES – NDP MLA Jinny Sims and Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal – have long been planning to run for mayor of Surrey. Why on earth would these two want to risk ending up as losers and so also end up spoiling the reputation of their party?!

Some speculate that the two will end up splitting the vote of South Asians. BUT the fact is that the solid South Asian base that supports McCallum will mostly stick to the incumbent mayor. Also, McCallum has a solid non-South Asian base as well and this includes white Surrey-ites. Let’s not forget that the opportunistic BC Liberal Party made supporting the proRCMP groups the key issue in the last provincial election – and they actually lost one of their MLAs! Locke has no chance of winning as such and she can only hope and pray that vote-splitting might allow her to squeeze through as the winner (you never know in this crazy circus!). Also, for argument’s sake, even IF she were to win – and this applies to Sims and Dhaliwal as well – without a majority of councilors, they would be USELESS as such! Then there is the Surrey First group that was so badly humiliated by McCallum and his Safe Surrey Coalition in the last election. They will also be DESPERATE to get revenge. But can they succeed? Their party’s only victorious candi-

date, Linda Annis, may also try to run for mayor. There are rumours that she may try to run for MLA in Stephanie Cadieux’s Surrey-Panorama riding. Cadieux will be resigning her seat in the Legislature at the end of this month. Annis never misses an opportunity to fire off a press release on some topic or the other. Ah, we will just have to watch the exciting developments to see who all will actually run for mayor, and, equally important, for council – and who all will WIN. Yes, let the (CRAZY) games begin!

Jinny Sims

VERY, very, very interesting, indeed! I am talking about the highly contentious municipal election scene in SURREY. In spite of millions of prayers by haters of Mayor Doug McCallum, that man remains

standing while his enemies grind their teeth and clench their jaws – the case they were sure would end his political career has been put off by the court until AFTER the municipal election. Let’s face it: in spite of all the vicious attacks for years against McCallum by vested interests in the WHITE nationalist mainstream media (that is being called FAKE MEDIA by more and more Canadians, especially visible

THERE are unconfirmed rumours that Anita Huberman, President and CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, who is known to firmly support keeping the RCMP in Surrey, has been approached by Surrey First to run as their mayoral candidate in Surrey. We called Huberman on her cell phone number twice and left her messages inquiring about this, but she has yet to get back to us. Community engagement shapes B.C.’s first anti-racism data legislation involved in how their data is used and shared. With this in mind, we will create legislation that keeps people’s data safe. Racism is a complex issue, and we know that legislation and data alone will not solve it. We are committed to eliminating racism in all its forms – from systemic racism to the incidents of racist attacks and hatred that we are seeing all too often. Other actions our government is taking to tackle racism includes reinstating the B.C. Human Rights Commissioner, Reviewing the Police Act,

BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond-Queensborough FOR far too long, Indigenous, Black and people of colour have faced unfair barriers to services and supports because of systemic racism and discrimination. That is why our government will be introducing landmark anti-racism data legislation in the coming weeks. This legislation will help government to safely collect and use desegregated data to address systemic racism in public services and institutions like health care, education, and policing. By understanding where the gaps and issues are, we will be able to eliminate them. As we created this legislation, we undertook one of the most extensive public engagements the province has ever done. From September to January, we engaged with Indigenous and racialized communities on how demographic data can be safely and thoughtfully used to address systemic racism. We heard from more than 13,000 people, and their voices will inform the legislation we will introduce in the coming weeks. “Demographic data” is a term that perhaps sounds too technical for the deeply personal meaning it really has. When someone shares their demographic information, they are sharing with us the different identities that they hold – their ethnic origins, ancestry, religion, and more. They are making themselves visible to us,

and in this world where so many identities are still disrespected and marginalized, to be visible is often to be vulnerable. The demographic data collected will be used to help identify the policy and service gaps that disproportionately affect Indigenous and racialized peoples. Identifying these gaps is one of many ways that we are continuing the necessary work of fighting for the future that we all want for British Columbia. In the consultation, over 90% of people believed that collecting demographic data could bring about a positive change in B.C. People also talked about the importance of storing this data safely, and the need for communities to be

Woman killed in collision involving train, flatbed truck and SUV in Maple Ridge

ON Thursday at approximately 5:45 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a flatbed truck being struck by a train, resulting in the truck colliding with a black SUV in the 27200-block of Lougheed Highway. A flatbed truck was attempting to cross the train tracks when the back of the flatbed was struck by an eastbound train. The impact of the train colliding with the truck resulted in the truck striking the SUV that was attempting to cross the tracks in the opposite direction, trapping the driver inside the SUV. Maple Ridge Fire Department attempted to extricate a woman trapped in the SUV that had rolled as a result of the impact. The highway was closed to all traffic in prep-

aration for Air Ambulance to transport the woman to hospital. However, the transport was called off because the woman died on scene. BC Coroners Services attended the scene. Ridge Meadows RCMP Investigational Support Team and Serious Crimes Unit were called in to assist the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Services (ICARS). City of Surrey named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for third year in a row THE City of Surrey has gained national recognition as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2022. This is the third year in a row that the City has received this award. “I want to commend City staff for making the protection and betterment of the environment a top priority,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Surrey City Council made a commitment to find ways to lead, expand and make it easier

for residents to go green. This award is proof that the direction and actions we have taken are making a difference in the sustainability of our City.” Guided by its Sustainability Charter 2.0, an ambition 40-year vision for sustainability in Surrey, the City of Surrey continues to deliver innovative and effective initiatives to ensure that Surrey remains sustainable far into the future.

These initiatives include: * A new Climate Action Strategy that aims to meet the ambitious goals of net zero community wide and absolute zero corporate emissions before 2050. * Surrey’s Rethink Waste program and Biofuel facility, which is designed to process 115,000 tonnes of organic waste a year. * The City’s successful tree sales, which sold 4,069 trees to Surrey residents in 2021 as part of its efforts to increase tree canopy coverage across the city. Now in its 15th year, Canada’s Greenest Em-

ployers is an editorial competition that recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. Employers are evaluated and selected based on their unique environmental initiatives and programs; success in reducing their environmental footprint; the degree to which employees are involved in their programs; and the extent to which these initiatives have become linked to the organization’s identity. NDP slams Falcon for his record of mental health service cuts VANCOUVER-QUILCHENA NDP candidate Jeanette Ashe and MLA Sheila Malcolmson said on Tuesday that BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon’s record of service cuts and harmful comments regarding mental health show he’s not working for people. “Our province is facing significant challenges with mental health and addictions, and Kevin Falcon’s record shows he would make this crisis so much worse,” said Ashe. “For over a decade, he gave tax breaks to the top 1% while cutting hundreds of millions of dollars to mental health and addictions services while he was Minister of Health and Minister of Red Tape Reduction.” Additionally, in 2008, Falcon was stuck in traffic after Vancouver Police closed the Ironworkers’ Memorial Bridge to help an elderly woman who was contemplating suicide. Instead of supporting the successful effort to save a life, Falcon attacked the police for inconveniencing him: “I am utterly perplexed at how it took six hours to deal with an elderly female.” When asked if a suicide barrier should be installed, Falcon lamented that it would “cost millions of dollars” and said “if people are trying to kill themselves, it is tough to stop them.” “It’s disgraceful for Kevin Falcon to dismiss the life of someone considering suicide because the situation inconvenienced him,” said Malcolmson. “And one year later as Health Minister, he personally cut mental health and addictions services, contributing to the crisis we see today. His record shows that he’ll put the wealthy and well-connected first and make everyone else pay for his choices.” The NDP said that Falcon’s record includes: * As a Cabinet Minister in 2002, he supported the BC Liberals’ massive cuts to social services, including a 23% cut to Children and Families. This included cutting $34.5 million from youth justice and mental health. This same budget included tax breaks for the top income tax bracket. * Falcon recently defended his government’s 2002 cuts. Last week, he refused to apologize for the devastating impact of these cuts on services for sexual assault survivors. * As Health Minister in 2009, Falcon cut $360 million from health authorities, forcing them to

Surrey RCMP locate two stolen work vans and arrest five

FIVE alleged thieves were recently arrested by Surrey RCMP inside two separate stolen work vans. On March 17 at 11:15 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report that a 1999 Ford work van was stolen from the 12600-block of 112A Avenue. The vehicle had approximately $8,000 of contents inside when it was taken. At 5:37 p.m., a frontline officer observed the stolen van in a parking lot near 152 Street and 84 Avenue with two occupants. Police arrested a 41-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman. The driver of the vehicle was released on conditions with a future court date. On March 31, the Surrey RCMP Auto Theft Target Team located a work van that was reported stolen from Langley. The van was located in the 14500-block of 105A Avenue and three occupants were taken into police custody. Police located other stolen property inside the van, including Toyota Tacoma tailgates. Devin Wilkinson, 25, has been charged with possession of a break-in instrument, two counts of fail to comply with release order, two counts of possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000 and two counts of theft under $5,000. Rupinder Sooch, 38, has been charged with take/ occupy a vehicle without consent, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of ammunition. “The Surrey RCMP Auto Crime Target Team has prioritized work van thefts as they recognize the lasting impact these thefts can have on a person’s livelihood,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Cpl. Vanessa Munn. “These two examples are unrelated, but demonstrate our commitment to quickly locating stolen vehicles and bringing those responsible before the courts.”

ship campaign. Falcon has not addressed these allegations. The NDP said that its government created Canada’s first Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions and is adding services on a weekly basis.

ADDRESSING an event from the Red Fort in Delhi to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib near the Red Fort stands a symbol of the immortal sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur. “This holy Gurdwara reminds us how great was the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji to protect our great culture. At that time there was a storm of religious fanaticism in the country. India, which considered religion as a matter of philosophy, science and self-reflection, was facing people who had committed violence and atrocities in the name of religion,” he said. At that time, there was a great hope for India to save its identity in the form of Guru Tegh Bahadur, he noted. “In front of Aurangzeb’s tyrannical thinking, Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, becoming ‘Hind di Chadar’, stood like a rock,” Modi said. Red Fort is witness that Aurangzeb and tyrants like him might have beheaded many people but our faith could not be separated

from us, the Prime Minister said. The sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur has inspired many generations of India to live and die to protect the dignity of their culture, for its honour and respect, he said. Big powers have disappeared, big storms have calmed down, but India still stands immortal and is moving ahead, Modi asserted. “India has never posed a threat to any country or society. Even today we think for the welfare of the whole world. When we talk about a self-reliant India, we keep the progress of the whole world in front of that goal,” he said. The Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the occasion. The programme was focused on highlighting the teachings of the ninth Sikh guru who sacrificed his life to protect religion and human values, ideals and principles in world history. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s death anniversary is commemorated as ‘Shaheedi Divas’ every year on November 24. Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, built at

Modi during the 400th Parkash Purb celebrations of Guru Tegh Bahadur at the Red Fort where he released a postal stamp and a commemorative coin on the Guru. the spot where he was beheaded, and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, the site of his cremation, in Delhi are associated with his sacrifice. His legacy serves as a great unifying force for the nation. The fort was chosen as the venue for the event as it was from here that Aurangzeb had given orders for the execution of Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675, according to Ministry of Culture officials. The event also saw performances by 400 Sikh musicians and a langar was also held.

The BJP has been trying to reach out to the Sikh community ever since it decided to go it alone in the Punjab Assembly elections following the breakdown of the old alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal over the three farm laws. The Prime Minister had chosen to announce the repeal of the laws on Guru Nanak Jayanti last November. In neighbouring Haryana, the party has planned a series of events to mark the occasion, including a grand event in Panipat on April 24, 2022.

Begin the change from Gujarat, Telangana leaders dare Amit Shah

Hyderabad (IANS): Telangana is considered as mini-India because of its true cosmopolitan nature and the language sentiments here not being as strong as in Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, but Union Home Ministers Amit Shah’s recent statement that Hindi should be the alternative to English for communication among Indians has drawn the ire of all. Political parties and academicians see this as an attempt to impose a particular language on India though unity in diversity is the country’s strength. They warn that this regional chauvinism will boomerang. Some political leaders have slammed the BJP for what they call its double-standards on the language issue, and dared the party to start imposing Hindi from Gujarat. The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has come down heavily on the BJP for doing politics over language, saying the saffron party wants to decide not only what one should eat and wear, but also the language one should communicate in. “Why don’t we let people of our great nation decide what to eat, what to wear, who to pray to and what language to speak,” said TRS working President K.T. Rama Rao, who warned that language chauvinism or hegemony will boomerang. He also believes that rejecting English will be a great disservice to the youngsters of this nation who have global aspirations. “Already our students in different states are missing the English language to be competent. While it is the wish and will of citizens to practice what they want, imposition is not right. After Amit Shah spoke, we have seen on national

K. T. Rama Rao and Amit Shah. channels many BJP MPs toeing the line of the ‘one nation one language’ theory. That’s more dangerous than the agenda Amit Shah has brought. This questions the identity of states and different regional languages,” TRS leader Manne Krishank told IANS. He also believes that the BJP is adopting dual standards on the language issue. “In February, the Gujarat government took a decision that all sign boards should be in Gujarati. The government of India ruled by the BJP is pushing states that they should practice Hindi, whereas Gujarat is talking about Gujarati. Instead of preaching states down south, they should start from Gujarat if they really believe in practicing what the preach. Let them start from Gujarat,” said Krishank, who is the convenor of the social media wing of the TRS and also chairman of the Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation (TSMD). “It’s an absolutely uncalled for remark by Amit Shah against the very spirit of the Indian Constitution. Not just the federal concept of the Constitution, but the very spirit of unity in diversity. Enforcing a particular language upon

the entire country, particularly in southern India, is an attempt of expansionist imperialism. “I mean, they want to somehow take control of the region and therefore they are using language now. But I think India is mature enough to understand this dubious politics of region, religion and now again language. This is essentially to establish their dominance,” said senior Congress leader Dasoju Sravan Kumar. He believes there is no language problem in almost the entire south India. “You don’t see language problems, particularly in the context of Telangana, where there are people who speak Urdu and Hindi. There are people who come from all over India — Gujaratis, Parsis, Rajasthanis, Tamilians, Malayalis and others. Telangana is like a mini-India where people come from various religions, regions and languages. Per se, this kind of Hindi enforcement by the government of India will only boomerang and Telangana will strongly extend the rebuttal,” said Sravan Kumar, who is a national spokesman of the Congress. “Language is part of the DNA.

How can my DNA be changed just because Amit Shah enforces something? Everybody speaks their mother tongue based on culture, history and traditions. And you suddenly come and say you should speak in Hindi. First you change Gujaratis, and then come to us,” added the Congress leader. Academician K. Nageshwar has also found fault with the Union minister’s statement. “Diversity of language, culture, tradition, belief, faith, customs and an underlying unity is India’s true soul. Don’t convert India into a hegemonic regimented society,” said Nageshwar. He reminded Amit Shah that there is no single language of India. There are several languages of India and linguistic diversity demands equal treatment of all. The former member of legislative council observed that promoting a language that advantages one set of Indians over others is a recipe for division over diversity. He wondered why can’t Amit Shah talk of making any south Indian language mandatory in Hindi-speaking states to forge national unity. “It’s my choice. Let me speak what I want to speak. Why are you forcing me to speak Hindi? It makes no sense. If somebody wants to learn, they are anyway learning. These days there is so much awareness. “Tamilians are also learning Hindi if they like and if they think that it helps them in business. Language is not a national identity. Language is a medium of communication,” said Sravan Kumar, who also served as assistant professor in human resource management at the Institute of Public Enterprise.

NEW

“If you go to Gujarat, how many people speak Hindi there? They speak Gujarati. How many people in Rajasthan speak Hindi? They speak Rajasthani. In Maharashtra they speak Marathi. Language enforcement is essentially some kind of expansionist thinking, imperialist thinking. This is our language and all should practice it. This is a sort of tyrannical and dictatorial tendency,” he said. Krishank is of the view that the talk of Hindi as alternative language to English is BJP’s style of politics. “First food, then dress and now language. We have seen it in Karnataka. Hijab, Hilal and now Hindi. They are doing triple H politics,” he remarked. The TRS leader also reminded Amit Shah that Hindi is spoken in different states differently. “Someone from Bihar speaks one Hindi, someone from Uttar Pradesh speaks another Hindi. We in Hyderabad speak Deccani which is a different dialect from Hindi. If their ‘nahin’ is ‘na’ for someone, it is ‘nakko’ for me. It’s ‘Bhao’ in Maharashtra and it’s ‘Bhai’ in another place. “More than necessity or anything, comfort level has to be seen. For instance, when Nirmala Sitharaman speaks in Parliament in English, it is understood. We appreciate that she is a good orator, but when she speaks Hindi, she makes so many mistakes. It looks as if she is speaking some other language. This is how it is. “If tomorrow a Hyderabadi goes and speaks, it will be totally different. In Bollywood movies, Hyderabadi Hindi is shown for comedians. What they are trying to do is mere politics. Imposition of politics through language,” Krishank said.

Indian naval officers reveal truth about the loss of Moskva

Kolkata (IANS): RFNS Moskva may have been a potent naval platform till about 10 years ago but was unfit for modern naval warfare when it sank in the Black Sea a few days ago, senior Indian Navy officers, both serving and retired, said. A few of them wondered whether RFNS Moskva was actually on its way to the port of Sevastopol in Crimea for upgrades when she went down. Russia had been planning to upgrade this 40-year-old cruiser since 2020 to extend her life by at least 10 more years. “I refuse to comment on who is to blame for the Russia-Ukraine conflict or whether the Moskva was actually sunk by Neptune missiles fired by Ukrainian forces. For any seafarer, the loss of a ship is a sad event. The Moskva was no ordinary ship, mind you. She was first in line of three Slava class cruisers built by the Soviet Union. Born as ‘Slava’ in 1982, she

The sinking Moskva. was later rechristened Moskva after probably had the closest ties with the collapse of the USSR in 1991. After all, several Indian Navy warships were then being then,” a senior officer said. Those wondering how the Indian built at shipyards in the USSR. During the Cold War, the USSR required warm waters to test the capabilities of warships and submarines. India provided them that facility. Steel behaves differently when the temperature of the water changes and the USSR had to ensure that its naval fleets are capable to counter any threat posed by the US. “The Russians trusted us. In 2010, a grand welcome was accorded to the Russian Federation Naval Ship (RFNS) Moskva when she sailed into Kochi. She gave a 21 gun salute and INS Dronacharya responded in an appropriate manner on behalf of the President of India. I had the opportunity, among a few others, to go through the ship. She was a huge ship. Much larger than any destroyer that we have. The Moskva had a displacement of nearly 11,000 tonnes (with equipment). However, she was outdated. I even spoke to the Russians on this subject. The

ship had much less armour than required. The Russians said that they didn’t need any as they could handle any airborne or sea-borne threat with the array of weapons the ship carried. I had realised then that the ship was destined to die,” a retired officer said. According to this officer, the Moskva didn’t even have sufficient equipment and technology on board to tackle a major fire that can take place on a warship. Such a fire, unless controlled, can cause havoc with the huge quantities of ammunition that these ships carry. “Unfortunately, the bullish attitude of the Soviet era hadn’t ebbed. The Russian officers felt they could handle any threat. I can’t say whether missiles sunk this magnificent ship or it was a fire on board that the crew failed to contain. All in all, this should remain a lesson for all,” the officer added.

Whole country is indebted to Sikh gurus: Indian Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi (IANS); The whole country is indebted to the great Sikh Gurus, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, adding that he feels blessed by attending the 400th Prakash Utsav of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Speaking at the function to celebrate the Prakash Parv of the Guru Tegh Bahadur at the Red Fort here, Shah further said “there is no such person in the country who is not overwhelmed by the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, everyone has a respect for him”. “When Kashmiri Pandits spoke about the atrocities committed against them in front of Guru Tegh Bahadur, he sacrificed his life to save Hinduism”. Noting that those who beheaded him are lost in history, he further said that even after 400 years, tens of millions of people bow down to the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur. “Today I unquestionably believe that due to the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji and Guru Gobind Singh ji, today the country is progressing so much, breathing freedom and celebrating the 75th Independence Day. Not only in India but in the whole world, even after 400 years, people bow down to his works,

life and message with respect and devotion.” “Narendra Modi is the most fortunate Prime Minister of the country because he has an opportunity to celebrate the 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj, 400th Prakash Parv of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and 350th Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh Ji,” Shah said. He also said that Prime Minister Modi conveyed the message of sacrifice, equality and valour of the great Sikh Gurus not only in India but to the whole world by celebrating these three Prakash Parvs with full devotion. Describing that it was a matter of great fortune for all, he also said that when this program is being organized, the country is also celebrating the 75th year of Independence. “Gurusaheb’s life is exemplary for all of us and an inspiration to every person of all age groups,” he said. The Home Minister also said that he had mastered many languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, and Gurmukhi and worked to spread the message of all the Gurus in all languages throughout the country. “Also, he founded the great Anandpur Sahib,” he added.

Shah said that a big essay competition was organised by the Ministry of Education in which 1,800,000 children from about 85,000 schools wrote essays on the life of the ninth guru, describing his qualities. “When

1,800,000 children write essays on Guru Tegh Bahadur ji in every corner of the country, those children have also got an opportunity to imbibe the Guru ji’s message,” he added.

First Delhi BJP leader, then Kumar Vishwas, now Cong’s Alka Lamba on Punjab Police’s radar New Delhi (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party, claim partymen, is a party with a difference. But since it swept the 2022 Punjab polls by winning over 90 seats in the 117-seat Assembly and for the first time expanded its political footprint beyond Delhi, Opposition members allege that they are being targeted by the Punjab Police on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal always demanded that Delhi be made into a state and not a Union Territory. One of the prime reasons for this has been that the police in the national capital does not come under the CM, rather it is answerable to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Now since the party has won Punjab state with a brute majority, it is allegedly employing the age-old tactics to counter its rivals in Delhi, political pundits say. The Punjab Police which come under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, are these days, booking Kejriwal’s rivals. The latest action was against Congress leader Alka Lamba, who was on Wednesday summoned by the Punjab Police’s Special Investigation Team, Rupnagar, over a statement that she had made against Kejriwal before the Punjab Assembly polls, held earlier this year. In a tweet, Lamba said that the Punjab Police

Alka Lamba has pasted a notice on the wall of her house in Delhi and while the cops were leaving, they allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she does not appear before the police on April 26. The notice read, “During the investigation it is revealed that there are reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain facts and circumstances from you. Hence you are summoned

before the Special Investigation Team at 10.00 a.m. on or before April 26 at Police Station Sadar Roopnagar for the purpose of investigation.” Before Lamba, on the same day, a team of the Punjab Police visited former AAP leader Kumar Vishwas’ residence in Ghaziabad. Taking to Twitter, Vishwas served a warning to Punjab Chief Minister Baghwant Mann, saying: “Punjab police team was at my doorsteps early morning. I am cautioning Bhagwant Mann, whom I inducted into the party myself, that the person sitting in Delhi will betray both you and Punjab one day. The country should remember my warning.” Reportedly, Punjab Police have booked the former AAP leader under Sections 153, 153-A, 505, 502, 116, 143, 147, 323 and 341 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 125 of the Representation of People Act over one of his statements made in the run-up to the Assembly elections in Punjab, in which Vishwas, without naming him, had said that Arvind Kejriwal wants to be the Prime Minister of an independent nation of Khalistan, accusing the AAP convenor of having connections with separatists in Punjab. Earlier on April 9, Delhi BJP spokesperson Naveen Jindal had claimed that Punjab Police

personnel conducted a raid at his Delhi residence to arrest him in a case that was registered against him for allegedly tweeting a ‘doctored video’ of Kejriwal. On April 6, the BJP spokesperson had tweeted a video with the caption ‘Eventually their truth came out’, in which Kejriwal was allegedly heard talkling about top government functionaries taking money. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against Jindal on April 7 at the SAS Nagar police station in Punjab. Jindal, while speaking to IANS, said that he was not present in the house when four Punjab Police personnel landed at his residence in Delhi. Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta has defended his partyman and accused Kejriwal of misusing the Punjab Police by sending them to the houses of those who exposed him and spoke against him. He said the Punjab Police are after the BJP workers because they exposed the corruption of the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, exposed the construction of Haj House in Dwarka, negligence during the Covid pandemic and exposed the Rs 20 crore [Rs 200 million] swimming pool being built at Kejriwal’s house.

Sukhbir asks Kejriwal not to play politics on SYL canal New Delhi (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday asked Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal not to play politics on the sensitive issue of the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal even as he asked Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to urge him to withdraw the guarantee given on this issue to the people of Haryana. Talking to the media at Gurdwara Rakabganj here, Badal said the AAP had again started befooling Punjabis in its age-old tradition. The Punjab Finance Minister had now announced that the state’s river waters would not flow into Haryana, even as a Rajya Sabha MP had given a guarantee on behalf of Kejriwal in Haryana that water from the SYL canal would irrigate each and every field in the state. Asserting that this insidious conduct of AAP

Sukhbir Badal had the potential to inflame sentiments in the entire region, Badal said the continued silence of Mann on this issue was being read as a weakness by Punjabis.

“It seems Mann knows the real intentions of Kejriwal which the latter has made public earlier also by filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court demanding water be released to Haryana and Delhi through the SYL. If Mann does not step in and ask Kejriwal to withdraw the guarantee given by his party to the people of Haryana, he should be prepared to face the angst of Punjabis who will not allow one drop of water to flow into Haryana from the SYL canal.” Badal said as far as SAD was concerned, the issue of the SYL had been closed forever in 2016 when then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal denotified all land acquired to build the canal and handed it back to farmers. “Now there is no land available for construction of the canal. Thinking of taking water from the canal to Haryana amounts to day

dreaming,” he added. Answering a query, Badal condemned the manner in which Punjab Police was being misused to victimise the political opponents of AAP. “Bhagwant Mann should not allow misuse of Punjab Police on the directions of the Delhi Chief Minister. We are witnessing cases being registered against all those who have stood up to AAP and the latest victim is Kumar Vishwas. Punjabis did not give power to AAP to enable it to settle its political scores. The mandate was to provide transparent, persecution free governance as well as fulfill all the promises made to the people. “The AAP government should concentrate on this rather than registering false cases against its opponent and sending Punjab Police personnel to their doorsteps to harass and persecute them,” he added.

Rajoana should be released as he is in prison for 26 years: Manish Tewari

New Delhi (IANS): In a surprise move, Congress MP Manish Tewari has advocated for the release of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the murder of then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. He tweeted: “Being a Terror Victim I understand anguish of my colleague Ravneet Bittu but as a Lawyer & MP from Punjab it is my considered view-S.Balwant Singh Rajoana having served 26 years in Prison his death sentence be commuted to life and he be released by passing orders under Sec 432 CRPC”. Tewari on Wednesday tweeted that Rajoana should be released from prison by invoking section 432 of CrPc. “Criminal jurisprudence of incarceration needs to be grounded in reformation & not retribution,” he said. Ravneet Singh Bittu, the grandson of Beant Singh, had opposed the release and had

Manish Tewari written a letter to the Prime Minister to order investigation in SAD demand for the release. The matter came to fore after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh

Badal on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure the expeditious release of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana to fulfill the promise made to the Sikh community to release eight Sikh prisoners, who have served more than the effective equivalent of a life sentence, on the eve of the 550th Parkash Purb celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019. While calling for the release of all such Sikh prisoners, the SAD President urged the Prime Minister to intervene and expedite the matter of clemency of Rajoana with the competent authority to commute the death penalty awarded to him and ensure his release at the earliest. The Union government had approved the commutation of Rajoana’s death sentence to life imprisonment as a humanitarian gesture in 2019.

Badal said the issue warranted the urgent attention of the Prime Minister since a clemency petition under Article 72 of the Constitution, which was filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on March 25, 2012, was still pending with the President. He said the Supreme Court had also issued a notice to the Union government to take a call on his mercy petition by April 30. Badal asserted in his communication that he was hopeful that the Prime Minister would appreciate that there was no rationale to keep Rajoana behind the bars when the Union government had commuted his death sentence. He said the Sikh prisoner had already been incarcerated in prison for 26 years, which was much longer than the effective duration of a life term.

NIA announces reward of Rs 500,000 in Ludhiana court blast case

New Delhi (IANS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh (Rs 500,000) in connection with the Ludhiana court blast case. The blast that took place on December 23 last year. The NIA said that it needs information regarding the individuals involved in the case.

The agency has not named anyone or any specific organisation while announcing the reward. Initially, a case in this regard was lodged by Ludhiana Police in 2021, and later on, the probe was taken over by the NIA in 2022. During investigation, it was learnt that the person who died in the blast was identified

as Gagandeep Singh, the former Head Constable of Haryana, and he died while planting the bomb. Earlier, during the searches, several incriminating documents including digital evidence and mobile phones have been seized. Earlier, the Punjab police had claimed that they had found that Pakistan’s ISI was help-

ing a Germany-based radical Khalistani group which helped in execution of the blast. The probe of Punjab police had also allegedly revealed that Khalistani operatives were working with the drug mafia and Pakistan-based arms and narcotic dealers. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

The look-andfeel is a sumptuous fusion of digital luxury and innovative new trim elements, while the purpose design of the electric-vehicle architecture delivers exceptionally generous SUV interior dimensions. Paired with the optional third-row seating and electrically adjustable second row, this offers a level of flexibility to fit the full breadth of customer needs with luxury and style. the entire width of the vehicle cabin. The MBUX Hyperscreen includes the instrument cluster, infotainment and passenger display in a seamless design. This blends perfectly with the extreme proportions of the band above it incorporating the distinctive air-conditioning vents, and the seemingly free-floating center console below.

The 12.3-inch OLED display provides the front passenger with their own display and control area, making journeys more enjoyable and entertaining. Within the framework of the country-specific legal regulations, passengers are able to watch content such as video-streaming or TV when the vehicle is in motion. This is because Mercedes-EQ uses

an intelligent, camera-based blocking logic: if the camera detects the driver looking at the front passenger display, the display will automatically dim dynamic content. A blend of innovative and traditional materials and colours give the interior of the EQS SUV an exceptionally progressive, lounge-like ambience. Seven carefully balanced colour combinations enhance the generous feeling of space, while fine leather and genuine wood create a warm tactile experience. One particular highlight is the innovative hybrid trim made from magnolia wood and stainless steel. Tiny holes shaped like Mercedes-Benz stars are laser-cut into the wood, with the steel sheet pressed into them from behind to produce a beautiful and modern inlay effect. The level of precision and high-end finish marks a first for this sector. Depending on whether it is the five- or seven-seat version, the lug-

ALLISTON, ON: Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM), a division of Honda Canada Inc., announced recently that it will invest $1.38 billion over six years to upgrade its award-winning Alliston, ON, manufacturing plants. The plants will implement new and innovative technologies, processes, supply chain and vehicle research and development programs, as a part of Honda’s goal to reach zero emissions by 2040. The announcement marks an important step in the company’s pathway to electrification and will see HCM become the North America Lead Plant for the all-new 2023 CR-V Hybrid crossover. This will bring Honda’s total Canadian facilities investments to more than $6.5 billion since 1986, when Honda became the first Japanese auto maker to build a Canadian manufacturing facility. HCM is partnering with both the governments of Canada and Ontario, with each level of government providing an equal and conditional contribution of $131.6 million. “This represents an important milestone for Honda as we move forward in our ambitious vision to make battery electric vehicles represent 100 per cent of our North America vehicle sales by 2040,” said Jean Marc Leclerc, President and CEO of Honda Canada. “HCM is home to a team of remarkably talented associates who build some of Honda’s

For 2023, a new available super high roof configuration on the 13-foot cargo van adds 254 millimetres (10-inches) of headroom when compared to the high roof configuration and best-in-class cargo volume and cargo height. A roll-up door is also available on the back of the vehicle and enables easier parcel handling for those whose job focuses on final delivery. Optional safety features include the aforementioned Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Information, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Drive Assist system, front parking sensors, auto high-beams and cornering function fog lamps and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Ram Commercial will introduce a batteryelectric ProMaster in 2023 in response to strong customer demand. More information will be available at a later date.

Financial commitments will also see a range of enhanced job training initiatives and expanded inclusive hiring practices, as well as research and development programs that further reduce environmental impacts of vehicle production. These investments will have a lasting and profound benefit for the Honda Canada dealer network, partnering suppliers, and the overall Canadian auto industry, including employees, their families, and the communities where they live and work. Honda of Canada Mfg. has the capacity to produce more than 400,000 vehicles and 190,000 engines annually, including the Honda Civic, Canada’s best-selling passenger car for 24 consecutive years, and CR-V models for the Canadian and North America markets, as well as for export. Approximately 100,000 Canadian-built Civic and CR-V units are sold annually in Canada.

Boosting nitric oxide the antidote to getting older

THE French existentialist, Gabriel Marcel, asserted “Life is not a problem to be solved but a mystery to be experienced.” Nevertheless, scientists remain intent on figuring it out. The cells in our bodies are susceptible to damage. A sunburn is a visible example. Ultraviolet rays scorch skin cells, causing rapid death. Damage occurs at a slower pace from poor diet, excessive alcohol, smoking, and all kinds of physical and mental stress. Over time, the biological process of replacing damaged cells through replication involves compounding errors, and cells die completely. When too many cells die, biological systems start to falter. This, in short, is aging. Researchers are exploring experimental drugs, essential trace minerals, and even calorie restriction as avenues to longer lives. What is the best course in the meantime? Practice preventive medicine from an early age and stick with it. But what if you are already well along in life’s course? Aging is not a prospect; it is a daily reality. Are you feeling tired, falling asleep in the afternoon, losing your keys or interest in sex? Are you concerned about cardiovascular disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, diabetes and its complications? Do you want to limit the pain and swelling of arthritis, calm the inflammation of asthma and assist the immune system in fighting infection? The older one gets, hopefully the wiser too. That means a look at history. In 1998, Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discoveries on the role of nitric oxide in the cardiovascular system. Researchers had long known that nitroglycerine eased coronary pain by increasing blood supply to the heart’s muscle. But it remained a mystery why arteries expanded until these Nobel laureates explained how nitric oxide sends messages to every cell in the body in nanoseconds. Nitric oxide first attained star status in the treatment of male impotence. Erectile dysfunction is cured by drugs that produce nitric oxide, sending increased amounts of blood to private parts. Early in life we produce large amounts of nitric oxide in the endothelial lining (the innermost lining) of blood vessels. This keeps arteries expanded. But after age 40, production of nitric oxide decreases, arteries constrict causing hypertension, and constant pressure injures the inner wall of coronary arteries. This damage results in a chemical and inflammatory reaction that kills one North American every 37 seconds. 27 million North Americans also suffer from arthritis, a debilitating condition. When nitric oxide increases circulation, nerve and joint inflammation decreases, which can result in dramatic relief from osteoarthritis. Another 25 million North Americans suffer from Type 2 diabetes due to obesity and 57 million others have borderline diabetes. High blood sugar gradually destroys the circulatory system resulting in heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, amputation of legs, and it doubles the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. Decreased amounts of nitric oxide may play a major role in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Low levels result in insulin resistance making it difficult for insulin

to enter cells to maintain a normal blood sugar level. Italian researchers found that diabetes patients who also had kidney disease had nitric oxide levels 37 percent lower than healthy people. Nitric oxide levels are significantly lower in patients suffering from depression too. To get more nitric oxide, add leafy greens and beets to the diet. Nitric oxide supplements work quickly when the need for a boost is more urgent.
