What a disgrace Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is! cONsERVaTiVE leadership candidate Derek Sloan, an Ontario MP, this week launched a brazenly racist attack on Canada’s chief public officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, tweeting: “Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, has failed Canadians. Dr. Tam must go! Canada must remain sovereign over decisions. The UN, the WHO, and Chinese Communist propaganda must never again have a say over Canada’s public health!” And in a tweeted video, Sloan shamelessly asked: “Does [Tam] work for Canada or for China?” Tam, who was born in British Hong Kong and grew up in the U.K., snubbed the racist MP, saying: “I don’t let noise sort of detract me from [working with all my colleagues to get this epidemic wave under control.]” We guess for the Conservative Party anyone who is not white can never be a Canadian – they remain an “immigrant” – never mind that all white guys are immigrants also! Sloan’s leadership slogan is: “Conservative – Without Apology.” CBC reported that his remarks drew condemnation on social media and his remarks were

categorized as “repugnant,” “vile” and “xenophobic.” That seems to really define the Conservative Party. Remember how a desperate former Conservative Prime Minister – Stephen Harper – used racist tactics by unnecessarily whipping up emotions against the Muslim face veil called niqab when he feared he was going to lose the election to Justin Trudeau and his Liberals? Well, he lost anyway! And he also lost a lot of goodwill from all decent Canadians. Then we had another Conservative leader – Andrew Scheer – who tried to encourage Chinese voters in Burnaby and

elsewhere in the Lower Mainland to whip up racism against Muslim immigrants because of the unfortunate, tragic murder of a Chinese teenager, hoping to turn them against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberals for bringing in Syrian refugees. (Ironically, the Chinese have now been facing racism because of COVID-19! This is a good lesson for all ethnicities to be rational and not encourage such racist behaviour against any group.) In any case, Scheer also lost – like Harper had – to Trudeau and

Work restrictions for international students in essential services removed TO help battle the COVID-19 outbreak, starting immediately, the government will remove the restriction that allows international students to work a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session, provided they are working in an essential service or function, such as health care, critical infrastructure, or the supply of food or other critical goods. During the COVID-19 outbreak, workers in certain roles and industries have been under considerable pressure, and the government says it recognizes that international students who are already present in Canada will help meet the challenges of the pandemic. For instance, thousands of international students are studying in health- and emergency service-related programs, including many who are nearly fully trained and ready to graduate. This temporary rule change provides healthcare facilities with access to additional well-trained workers at a time when they are badly needed. Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said on Wednesday: “Immigrants, temporary foreign workers and international students are making important contributions as frontline workers in health care and other essential service sectors. We know and value their efforts and sacrifices to keep Canadians healthy and ensure the delivery of critical goods and services.”

Quick FacTs * International students and their employers should consult Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada’s “Guidance on Essential Services and Functions in Canada During the COVID-19 Outbreak” (for the link, visit our website voiceonline. com) to determine if the work the student is doing would allow them to work more than 20 hours per week during the academic session. * This temporary rule change will be in place until August 31. * Statistics Canada reported that in 2017– 2018, more than 11,000 international students were enrolled in health-care programs at Canada’s universities and colleges, representing about 4% of health-care students at that time.

‘Scheer should have insisted on an apology or a resignation from caucus’ CONTINUED FROM 1 his party demanded that he step down even as he desperately tried to find excuses to cling on to power. Scheer has now once again shown his party’s true colours by refusing to condemn Sloan’s disgusting racist attack on Tam. Scheer’s lame excuse for his spineless stand? “I won’t be commenting on individual statements or positions that leadership candidates take. That’s up for them to explain, and ultimately the members of our party will decide when they vote in a leadership race,” he pathetically explained. In all fairness, some Conservative MPs have spoken against Sloan’s racism. But who can take them seriously? Trudeau, reacting to anti-East

Dr. Theresa Tam Photo: Twitter Asian racist incidents as well as Sloan’s statement, said: “Intolerance and racism have no place in our country,” pointing out: “Canada has succeeded because of our diversity. It is one of our greatest strengths, and the millions of Canadians of all different back-

grounds who are working together … to help their fellow Canadians deserve better than this from all of us.” He added: “We need to continue in our resolve to be an open, welcoming, respectful country and I think all Canadians expect that of every politician.” And federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh tweeted: “From the beginning of this crisis, we’ve heard horrible stories of abuse faced by Asian Canadians, particularly those of Chinese descent.” He added: “There is no question that MP Sloan’s comments against Dr. Theresa Tam fuel this kind of racism.” He said: “Andrew Scheer needs to clearly denounce this.” Columnist John Ivison wrote in the Vancouver Sun’s National Post section: “But Sloan didn’t just

question Tam’s competence, he queried her loyalty. He did it for leadership votes from conspiracy theorists and survivalists, who fear gun bans, internment and a UN invasion.” He added: “His leader [Scheer] should have insisted on an apology or a resignation from caucus.” Sloan’s leadership campaign website, the CBC noted, states: “The damage to free speech, freedom of religion and freedom of conscience happening in Canada can not be understated. It’s time for everyone concerned about these issues to stand up and support a candidate who will not just pay lip service but get in the line of fire to defend these freedoms.” What freedoms? The freedoms of white racists to attack non-white Canadians whenever they choose to do so?

VANCOUVER Police on Thursday said that their investigators had received numerous tips from the community on the racially motivated assault at a convenience store in East Vancouver and they had identified a suspect. CTV Vancouver reported on Thursday that the suspect is Jamie Bezanson, and that court records and public documents indicate he lives in East Vancouver and is a longshoreman. It added: “The man identifying himself as the suspect’s son told CTV News his father had turned himself in to police.” “Everything about this assault and the behaviour of the suspect is despicable,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Wednesday. “As a police department, we do not tolerate incidents motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate. It’s even

The suspect. more disturbing considering the victim’s age.” In the afternoon of March 13, the 92-year-old victim, who suffers from severe dementia, wandered into a convenience store near Nanaimo Street and East 1st Avenue. Staff at the convenience store were trying to assist the elderly male, when the suspect began yelling racist remarks at the victim that included comments about COVID-19. Outside the store, the

suspect shoved the elderly man, which caused him to fall to the ground and hit his head. The suspect left the store before police arrived. Vancouver Police said that in recent weeks they have seen an increase in reports of anti-East Asian hate-motivated incidents and criminal behaviour. Eleven hate crimes were reported to police in March. Five of those reports (45 per cent) had an antiEast Asian element. So far in 2020, there have been a total of nine anti-East Asian hate crimes reported to police. In comparison, there were 12 in all of 2019. “We know that hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents are generally underreported. We believe the increase in March is indicative of a larger issue,” added Visintin. “We are making a plea to vic-

tims or people who witness hate crimes to please come forward and report the incidents to police so they can be investigated.” The suspect is described as a white man in his 50s. He is believed to be six feet tall with a heavy build. He has dark, short hair and is balding on the top. He was wearing a grey, button up shirt over a black t-shirt with a white skull design on the front, black plants and black running shoes. He was also wearing a thick, gold bracelet, a gold necklace and several gold rings. Anyone with information is asked to call VPD investigators at 604717-2963 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477. Trudeau announces support of nearly $9 billion for post-secondary students, recent graduates PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday announced comprehensive support of nearly $9 billion for post-secondary students and recent graduates. This plan will help provide the financial support they need this summer, help them continue their studies in the fall and help many get the experience they need to start their careers. These measures include launching: * the proposed Canada Emergency Student Benefit, which would provide support to students and new graduates who are not eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. This benefit would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students or $1,750 per month for eligible students with dependents or disabilities. The benefit would be available from May to August. * the new Canada Student Service Grant, which will help students gain valuable work experience and skills while they help their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. For students who choose to do national service and serve their communities, the new Canada Student Service Grant will provide up to $5,000 for their education in the fall. The Government of Canada will expand existing federal employment, skills development,

and youth programming to create up to 116,000 jobs, placements, and other training opportunities to help students find employment and develop valuable skills this summer and over the coming months. In addition, to help students continue their studies in the fall, the government will: * double the Canada Student Grants for all eligible full-time students to up to $6,000 and up to $3,600 for part-time students in 202021. The Canada Student Grants for Students with Permanent Disabilities and Students with Dependents would also be doubled. * broaden eligibility for student financial assistance by removing the expected student’s and spouse’s contributions in 2020-

21, in recognition that many students and families will struggle to save for school this year. * enhance the Canada Student Loans Program by raising the maximum weekly amount that can be provided to a student in 2020-21 from $210 to $350. * increase existing distinctionsbased support for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation students pursuing post-secondary education by providing an additional $75.2 million in 202021. * extend expiring federal graduate research scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships, and supplement existing federal research grants, to support students and post-doctoral

fellows, by providing $291.6 million to the federal granting councils. In addition, the government intends to enhance work opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows through the National Research Council of Canada. Taken together, these programs will not only help ensure more students get the financial support they need, but the opportunities and experience many students were counting on, said Trudeau. He said the government will continue to monitor and respond to the health, social, and economic impacts of COVID-19. It was ready to take additional actions as needed to stabilize the economy and mitigate the impacts of the pandemic on Canadians. Trudeau said: “The future of our economy and our country relies on the opportunities and support we provide to Canadian students today. To promote a sustainable economic recovery, we need a strong workforce and good job opportunities for young people. That means giving them the support they need to continue their studies and encouraging them to serve their communities. Together, we will get through this difficult time.” (For more details, visit our website voiceonline.com)

Trudeau announces plan for rent assistance for small businesses PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced that the federal government has reached an agreement in principle with all provinces and territories to implement the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) for small businesses. This program will lower rent by 75 per cent for small businesses that have been affected by COVID-19. The government is also providing further details on the program: * The program will provide forgivable loans to qualifying commercial property owners to cover 50 per cent of three monthly rent payments that are payable by eligible small business tenants who are experiencing financial hardship during April, May, and June. * The loans will be forgiven if the mortgaged property owner agrees to reduce the eligible small business tenants’ rent by at least 75 per cent for the three corresponding months under a rent forgiveness agreement, which will include a term not to evict the tenant while the agreement is in place. The small business tenant would cover the remainder, up to 25 per cent of the rent. * Impacted small business tenants are businesses paying less than $50,000 per month in rent and who have temporarily ceased operations or have experienced at least a 70 per cent drop in pre-COVID-19 revenues. This support will also be available to non-

profit and charitable organizations. This announcement is part of the federal government’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan, which is addressing the challenges facing Canadians and their employers during this time of global uncertainty. The government says it continues to assess and respond to the impacts of COVID-19, and stands ready to take additional actions as needed to stabilize the economy and mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. Trudeau said: “More help is on the way for our small businesses across the country. They are the backbone of our families, our communities, and our economy. That is why we will continue working closely with provinces and territories to make sure that Canadian businesses have the support they need during these difficult times.” Finance Minister Bill Morneau said: “Small businesses are an integral part of our economy, and are vital for families and communities across the country. Many businesses are facing economic hardship and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank and commend the many property owners who have already taken action to help their tenants during this crisis. Today’s program will provide forgivable loans to commercial property owners who in turn will lower the rent of tenants to keep them prepared to bounce back when this crisis subsides.”

Trudeau’s approval at highest level since 2017 MORE than one month into an unprecedented national shutdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Prime Min-

ister Justin Trudeau’s frontand-centre presence at daily briefings has caused his approval ratings to do some-

thing they have not done in nearly two years: crack the majority mark. The latest study from the

non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds 54 per cent of Canadians now endorse him, a 21-point increase since the end of February. While the Institute acknowledges the chance of a snap election call to replace this minority government anytime soon is almost-nil – it is worth noting that Trudeau’s recent surge in popularity does not necessarily translate into a significant advantage for the fortunes of the Liberal Party among would-be voters. The governing party is now in a statistical tie, holding a slight advantage over the opposition Conservative Party (29% to 27%). A considerable group of Canadians say they are not sure who they would support if an election were held (16%). Looking only at decided voters, the Liberals lead by three points: 36 per cent to 33 per cent over the CPC.

More Key Findings: * 89 per cent of past Liberal voters approve of the Prime Minister, joined by 74 per cent of those who voted for the NDP. Just one-in-five past CPC voters and 28 per cent of Bloc

Quebecois voters approve of Trudeau * Majority approval for Trudeau is noted among all age groups, something that last happened in March of 2017

Tibor Tusnady is B.C.’s newest millionaire with $16.4 million OF all of the places to find out you’d won $16.4 million, White Rock’s Tibor Tusnady (Tee-bor Tushnady) probably didn’t think the washroom was going to be one of them. Tusnady was at home with his spouse when he decided to check his Lotto 6/49 tickets for the April 15 draw; more specifically, he was in the washroom. “I Googled the numbers,” explained Tusnady. “I took my ticket out and checked and just went blank. I tried to take a deep breath, let it register, and went back and checked again and again.” After discovering he had matched all six numbers to win

the $16.4-million jackpot, Tusnady froze. He didn’t know how to tell his spouse. He even took the night to sleep on it. “Eventually, we fell asleep,” said Tusnady. “The next day, after lunch, I held her hand and said ‘Look, I have something to tell you and I don’t want anything to change with us.’”

After telling her the incredible news, Tusnady held video meetings to tell relatives across Canada and in Hungary, followed by a toast with champagne. Tusnady purchased the winning $16.4-million ticket at the Elgin Esso on Crescent Road in Surrey, and claimed his lifechanging prize through BCLC’s alternate prize claim process. He says travel will be on the family’s mind once the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is resolved. He will let his spouse decide the first travel destination, but promises it will be first class all the way. Tusnady is a retired pharmacist.

Parents of grade 4 students in 6 Surrey elementary schools urged to choose Punjabi as second language BY BALWANT SANGHERA President Punjabi Language Education Association

DURING the past few years, Punjabi has attained a fairly high profile in Canada, locally, provincially and nationally. All around there are a lot of signs in Punjabi at prominent government and public places like banks, hospitals, city halls,

credit unions and various other locations. Punjabi has now become the language of employment in many parts of Canada .In this context, Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) continues to work hard in promoting Punjabi at all levels. Surrey has always been a great model for us. At present, Punjabi is being taught in six elementary and nine secondary schools in Surrey. The six elementary schools where Punjabi classes are under way are: Beaver Creek, Green Timbers, Newton, Strawberry Hill, Chimney Hill and T.E. Scott. The nine high schools are: Enver Creek, Frank Hurt, L.A.Matheson, Panorama Ridge, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth, Sullivan Heights, Tamanawis and SAIL (Surrey Academy for Individualized Learning). In addition to that, Punjabi classes are being offered in North Delta Secondary School, New Westminster Secondary and Queensborough Middle School, Burnaby South and various schools in Abbotsford. Due to the COVID-19 situation, our lives have been turned upside down. Schools are no exception. Online learning seems to have become the norm until things get back to normal. Every school district is now making plans for the Fall.

Surrey is also actively involved in this process. According to the BC Ministry of Education policy, every student in BC’s public school system must take a second language (other than English) from grades four to eight. In order to plan classes for September, Surrey school officials have sent language selection forms home via e-mail to the parents of current grade four students (who will be entering grade five in September 2020) in six elementary schools. Parents have been given the choice between French and Punjabi as a second language. These forms should be returned via email to their child’s school by April 30. On behalf of PLEA I would like to urge parents of grade four students of these six schools – Newton, Strawberry Hill, Beaver Creek, T.E. Scott, Green Timbers and Chimney Hill – to choose Punjabi and return the forms via e-mail immediately to their child’s school. PLEA would like to add more schools to these lists. However, it needs community support in order to do so. In this context, once the current COVID-19 pandemic is over and things are back to normal, PLEA would like to urge well-wishers of Punjabi to become its ambassadors. They can help organize parents at schools where there is a large number of students interested in enrolling in Punjabi classes. After organizing at the local school level, they should contact the school officials and PLEA to follow up on this. We need to encourage parents and students to take more pride in their mother tongue Punjabi. For further information please feel free to contact me at 604-836-8976 or Sadhu Binning at 778773-1886.

THE Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society, in partnership with the event producer, Brandlive Management Group, is exploring the options for a different type of Honda Celebration of Light event in 2020. “We hope to be able to make an announcement very soon, and in the meantime wish to thank our many partners, sponsors, participating countries and our millions of fans across the province and around the world for their ongoing support,” a press release announced on Monday. “Our team has been following guidance from the relevant government authorities and cautiously preparing for our summer event. However, comments made by health authorities this weekend indicate we must now accept the reality that the largest public event in our province will not happen as planned in July 2020,” it added. It noted: “For 30 years the skies above English Bay have come alive each summer in a celebration of community, music, food, and fireworks. British Columbia’s largest event, the Honda Celebration of Light, has been welcoming in excess of 1.3 million people annually to experience the magic of this free family event, the longest-running offshore fireworks competition in the world.”

Celebrating the achievements of Sikh-Canadians in law enforcement BY BRIAN SAUVE President National Police Federation THE month of April is Sikh Heritage Month – a time to celebrate and honour the contributions Sikh Canadian community members have made to Canada, as well as to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Canada is unique across the world in its celebration of Sikh Heritage Month, first in Ontario, then in British Columbia, and as of last year enshrined into law across the nation. This annual recognition is a testament to the lasting impact the SikhCanadian community has had on all facets of Canadian society.

The Sikh community has a long and proud history in Canada, first arriving in 1897 as part of a military contingent for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. While today Sikhs live all across Canada, the first immigrants settled predominantly in the Vancouver area, where the first Canadian Gurdwara was built in 1907.

Sikhs are known and respected across the world for their longstanding tradition of service in the armed forces and law enforcement. In World War I, Sikhs fought proudly alongside British and Canadian soldiers. Their service continues in the Canadian army, navy, air force, and of course, throughout the ranks of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Canada is strengthened by our commitment to upholding equality, respect, and freedom for all. These are values shared by the RCMP, placing a priority on making sure that RCMP Members reflect the diversity of Canadian communities. There is no greater example of this, than Baltej

Singh Dhillon who became the first turbaned RCMP officer in Canada in 1989, and blazed a path for future generations. Today, children from multicultural households across Canada can dream of growing up to become RCMP officers, regardless of race or religion, because of Dhillon’s example. My own experience as an RCMP officer in British Columbia goes back to 2004, and I have cherished working for a police force that embodies the diversity of Canadian languages, cultures, and religions. For many years now, the RCMP have participated in Vaisakhi celebrations across the country, including Surrey Vaisakhi, the largest Vaisakhi celebration outside of

India, which annually brings together Canadians of all backgrounds to celebrate the birth of the Khalsa. This year’s Sikh Heritage Month will not be the same without the very social celebration of Vaisakhi, but we can continue to honour the principles of kindness and hospitality as we address the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19. In difficult times the SikhCanadian community has always risen to the occasion with their “seva”. I have been so inspired by the actions of Gurdwaras all across the country, who have supported first responders, truckers, and food banks throughout this global pandemic. The kindness and generosity of their

service to others cannot be overstated. We will get through these challenging times together. Canada is known across the world as a place of diversity, equality and respect for all. However, it’s not in the good times but in the challenging times that these principles shine the brightest. Kindness rooted in respect for everyone is what will see us through this global pandemic. These values are shared by the Sikh-Canadian community, whose immense contributions have made our country an even better place for all Canadians. In this way, Sikh Heritage month is a time to reflect not just on the history of Sikh Canadians, but also on the history of Canada.

United Truckers Association launches campaign to expose illegal off-dock work Members encouraged to report industry’s hidden activities to prompt enforcement by Commissioner IN response to a justreleased bulletin by the BC Container Trucking Commissioner, the United Truckers Association (“UTA”) is launching the “Report Illegal Off-Dock Work” campaign to counteract rampant unlawful activities in the local drayage sector. The UTA says there are two critical passages in the Commissioner’s update regarding off-dock work that have inspired this initiative: 1) “It is a requirement that all licence holders pay the Commissioner’s rates… for both trip rate and hour-

rate paid drivers…” 2) “Licensees are reminded…it is a requirement of the Regulation and section 6.9 of the CTS Licence that they use tagged trucks for all on and off-dock moves.” Even though these are requirements that have existed since the launch of the Container Trucking Act & Regulation in 2014, they have never been properly enforced, according to UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh. “There is rampant use of unlicensed, untagged trucks that are paid well below the legislated rates

for off-dock work because a port pass is not required,” explains Singh. “The UTA was happy to receive the bulletin, but we also understand that the only way that the industry will abide by these rules is

through strict enforcement from the Commissioner.” The “Report Illegal OffDock Work” campaign is encouraging UTA member Independent Operators as well as employee drivers to contact the UTA and re-

port specifics around illegal off-dock activity – truck trip logs, truck numbers, or even photographs – that can then be forwarded to the Commissioner. The identity of any individual who provides information will be protected and kept confidential. This kind of proof is the key to solving the age-old off-dock problem of using illegal operators, as the Commissioner’s audits over the past five years have been unable to identify and target such practices, says the UTA. “The Commissioner needs the help of the driver com-

munity to ensure that his office is aware of as many instances of illegal activity as possible, and the UTA is prepared to take on this responsibility,” adds Singh. “With off-dock work representing over half of all drayage transactions in Metro Vancouver, this is a problem that if solved, could represent a significant increase in earnings for licensed legal drivers, which is even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic.” For the link to the BC Container Trucking Commissioner’s bulletin, visit our website voiceonline.com

‘Ramadan Mubarak’ from Trudeau, Horgan, Wilkinson PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday issued the following statement on Ramadan:

“Tonight at sunset, Muslims in Canada and around the world will mark the beginning of Ramadan, a month-long spiritual journey of

fasting and prayer. “Traditionally, Ramadan is a time of collective gathering. Families and friends observe Ramadan by getting together, fasting during the day, and ending their day with iftar. This year, Ramadan will look different as we continue to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic, and work to protect our communities by staying home and following the advice of public health experts. From mosques hosting Friday prayers online to families having iftar virtually, Muslim Canadians will be doing their part this year. “During this crisis, the values at the heart of Islam – compassion, gratitude, and generosity – resonate more than ever, as we see Muslim Canadians helping their neighbours. A time of charity and spiritual contemplation, Ramadan reminds us to put the needs of others before our own and to practice those values in our daily lives. “Let us take the time to recognize, and show gratitude for, the invaluable contributions Muslim Canadians make each day to

our country. “On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish ever yone celebrating a blessed and peaceful Ramadan. “Ramadan Mubarak.” B.C. Premier John Horgan said in a statement: “Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection and self-improvement for Muslim people in British Columbia and around the world. “During the month of Ramadan, many Muslim people will renew their commitments to better themselves and the world a r o u n d them through acts of charity and service to others. At a time when people around the province are struggling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ramadan reminds us to always have compassion and help each other where we can. “Normally during Ramadan, friends and families will undertake congregational prayers and break fast at sunset together. This year, people will find new ways of worshipping, including by video chat or from a safe physical distance. Now, more than ever, we must do everything we can to keep ourselves and others healthy and safe. “Ramadan reminds us that we all have a part to play in making the world a better place. Now is the time to act on these values in our own lives and communities. “To all those observing this holy month, I wish you a blessed, peaceful Ramadan. “Ramadan Mubarak!” B.C. Liberal Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition, Andrew Wilkinson, released the following statement: “Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, begins tonight at sundown and thousands of Muslims throughout our province will be adhering to a period of fasting, prayer, and devotion. “The month is a reflection on the values of patience, e m p a t h y, and charity. While we cannot celebrate together due to COVID-19, these important values are more important than ever as we face this pandemic. “We must be patient as public health officials work to contain the virus, we must empathize with those working through challenging circumstances, and we must support charitable acts in every corner of B.C. to take care of our vulnerable populations. “On behalf of the entire BC Liberal Caucus I want to wish the Muslim community here in British Columbia best wishes, peace, and happiness during this special month. “Ramadan Mubarak!”

Surrey coming together to keep students learning BY JINNY SIMS MLA for Surrey-Panorama AS the world faces the challenge of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, parents in Surrey and across the province are facing an unprecedented challenge of their own – the challenge of helping their kids learn at home during a pandemic, in many cases while working from home themselves. As a parent, grandparent, and former teacher myself, I know this task will not be an easy one. But in the weeks since the Province followed the advice of Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to suspend in-class instruction, parents, teachers, support staff and administrators across the

Surrey School District have come together, going above and beyond to help our kids learn from a distance. All across Surrey, our community is stepping up to support our students. After the decision was made to suspend in-class learning, the Surrey Board of Education acted quickly to ensure its school-based meal program could continue operating, getting meals to over 2,100

vulnerable Surrey students who depend on them. In my riding of Surrey-Panorama, teachers, education assistants and administrators at schools like Colebrook Elementary, École Woodward Hill Elementary, and Georges Vanier have gone above and beyond to develop daily activities and messages to help students keep learning and stay connected to their school community. Teachers are working hard to support students, and Surrey students are leading efforts to support one another. A great example of this can be found at Semiahmoo Secondary School, where students Stuti Sharma and Esther Zhang created the Learning Bridge, a free on-

line program where students can come together for tutoring, mentorship, and connection. Our government is stepping up too, and we’re working with the Surrey School District to develop an approach that works for students, parents, and teachers. In a province as diverse as ours, there won’t be a one-sizefits-all approach to continued learning – flexibility is key as we all move forward together. A key part of this is working with schools and families to address any barriers that make it difficult for students to learn from home. The Surrey School District is loaning out laptops and iPads to students who need them, and across the province more

than 23,000 students in need have been loaned technology to help them learn from home. There is also work underway to arrange low-cost internet plans and free wifi hotspots for families without access to the internet. To make sure kids and families have the supports they need, we have launched Keep Learning BC, a place to find free, grade-specific learning resources and supports for parents to help kids adjust to new learning environments. With the support of resources like Keep Learning BC, I hope parents feel empowered to get creative in their efforts to keep kids learning, both inside the virtual classroom and outside of

it. Whether we’re cooking with our kids, doing household chores, getting outside, or taking time to talk about emotional well-being, our daily lives are filled with ways to learn, and have fun, together. This is a challenging time for everyone, but we all have the same goal. I have been so inspired by the leadership shown by Surrey’s teachers, education assistants, administrators, parents and students in the past weeks. Thank you for your compassion, your adaptability, and your commitment to bringing out your best for our children. Everything you’re doing is making a difference, and our students, families, and communities are so much stronger for it.

Surrey Makes PPE: Local manufacturers retooling to combat COVID-19 SURREY Makes PPE is a City of Surrey initiative connecting local manufacturers with the information and resources to retool their facilities to produce essential medical and protective equipment. To date, nine Surrey manufacturers are producing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and medical supplies to meet the growing demand. The nine companies have the capacity of producing up to 32,000 face shields, 40,000 reusable fabric face masks and upwards of 200,000 liters of hand sanitizer each month. “Surrey is home to one of the largest manufacturing bases in the province and I want to commend our businesses for pivoting so quickly to produce critical medical and protective supplies needed to fight COVID-19, said Mayor Doug

McCallum. “The ability to turn on a dime and produce PPE supplies shows the initiative and the nimbleness of Surrey companies to adapt during these challenging times. Surrey Makes PPE was launched to assist senior levels of government and health authorities access large quantities of PPE supplies. An additional 11 facilities are in the process of retooling their assembly lines to respond and support the growing demands of government and health authorities. The program also provides an online marketplace that allows buyers to source in bulk from manufacturers directly. Surrey’s Firetech Manufacturing is one of the nine companies that has already repurposed their production lines to produce face shields.

He has been actively developing a roadmap and making appeals to various organizations to work together to achieve this goal. Chander is a native of Jalandhar, Punjab. He joined Indian Foreign Services in 1977. After serving in many key posts with the Indian Foreign Service, he retired in 2010 after having served as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Belarus. Chander now devotes his life to the betterment of humanity. “I am very pleased that the Mr. Chander has accepted our request to chair and lead this project. His dream is in full alignment with the feedback we received and the strategic directions of Chetna Association of Canada”, said Harmesh Chander, Vice President of Chetna Association of Canada. “Chetna Association believes in achieving its goals through education, awareness and partnerships. Chetna’s partnership with Ambassador Chander to jointly work on a common vision will be a true homage to Baba Saheb Dr. Ambedkar, who also believed in democratic revolution”, said Jai Birdi, General Secretary of Chetna Association of Canada. The next step for Chetna is to establish the membership for the planning committee representing various non-government organizations to support the ambassador in implementing his roadmap. Organizations interested in supporting this work and seeing April 14 being declared as the Dr. B.R. Ambekdar International Day of Equality are urged to express their interest by sending an email at info@chetna.ca.

$2,000 violation tickets for price gouging, other offences MIKE Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has given police and other enforcement officers the ability to issue $2,000 violation tickets for price gouging and the reselling of medical supplies and other essential goods during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Effective immediately, these new measures are enacted under the provincial state of emergency, using the extraordinary powers of the Emergency Program Act (EPA) in ongoing support of the Province’s all-of-society approach to COVID-19 response and recovery. “These orders are not suggestions, they are the law,” said Farnworth on Sunday. “These measures will provide enforcement officers and police agencies the ability to enforce the law on these criminal acts and despicable practices, like the reselling of medical supplies and price gouging.” The Province is calling upon compliance staff from provincial ministries and local governments to support enforcement for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency. This includes municipal bylaw officers, liquor and cannabis inspectors, gaming inspectors, conservation officers, community safety unit inspectors, park rangers, natural resource officers, commercial vehicle safety officials and sheriffs. Police and other enforcement officers are empowered to actively enforce EPA orders and issue $2,000 violation tickets for infractions throughout the COVID-19 state of emergency, focusing on the Province’s ban on reselling essential goods and supplies and price gouging. If required, police and other enforcement officers will also be able to actively enforce and ticket those who:

* exceed the quantity limits on the sale of specified items; and * do not comply with the requirement for hotel and other lodging operators to provide accommodation at the request of the Province to serve as self-isolation facilities or to support essential workers. Violation tickets are a timelier alternative to prosecution through the courts and increase the Province’s enforcement toolkit to support the COVID-19 response. Police and other enforcement officers will independently exercise discretion to issue tickets for EPA order violations under the Offence Act’s Violation Ticket Administration and Fines Regulation (VTAFR). The Province is also working with Consumer Protection BC (CPBC) to keep British Columbians safe from businesses and individuals who are trying to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic. CPBC will be the first and main point of contact for all complaints related to price gouging of essential goods and supplies, and will ensure those complaints are resolved appropriately in co-ordination with police and enforcement officers.

These measures are in concert with the federal government’s April 14 announcement that allows local and provincial police forces to issue

tickets to returning travellers who do not comply with the requirement to self-isolate for 14 days under the federal Quarantine Act.

29 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C.; 4 more deaths HEALTH Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Friday announced 29 new cases of COVID-19, for a total of 1,853 cases in British Columbia. Every health region in British Columbia has patients with COVID-19: 767 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 772 are in the Fraser Health region, 114 are in the Island Health region, 158 are in the Interior Health region and 42 are in the Northern Health region. There were four new COVID-19 related deaths in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions, for a total of 98 deaths in British Columbia. There have been no new outbreaks in longterm care, assisted living or acute care in the last day. In total, 20 facilities and three acutecare units have active outbreaks, with outbreaks declared over at 10 care facilities. Dix and Henry added: “Public health teams are also providing support to a number of community outbreaks, and we expect to continue to see more cases in the coming days as contact tracing continues. “As of today, two employees have been confirmed positive at Superior Poultry in Coquitlam, and 35 employees have now been confirmed positive at United Poultry in Vancouver. Additionally, there are 10 confirmed positive cases connected to the Kearl Lake project in Alberta and 78 inmates and staff confirmed positive at the Mission Institution federal correctional centre. “To date, 1,114 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered and no longer require isolation. “Of the total COVID-19 cases, 96 individuals are hospitalized, and 41 of those are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation. “Maintaining a safe physical distance, washing hands frequently and staying home when ill continue to be the best things we can do to protect our communities and continue to bend the curve. “While our weekends are a time to unwind and relax, the exception is with these important health measures. As you get outside and safely spend time with loved ones, let’s continue to stay strong and show care and compassion to those around us, by ensuring we do not undo all of our hard work and sacrifice.”

It is imperative that we are united in our efforts to ‘flatten the curve’ BY DR. VICTORIA LEE President and CEO Fraser Health WITHOUT a doubt, we are living in an extraordinary time, and I am encouraged to see how we as a collective community are coming together to support each other through the unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19. Over the course of my career, I have responded to crises such as SARS, H1N1 pandemic, avian influenza, Ebola and opioid overdoses. These emergencies can test the capabilities of the health system and at times our society to reveal our vulnerabilities. At the same time, we can apply the lessons learned from these experiences to address present and future concerns when they arise. Over the past several weeks, I have spoken to our leaders, staff, medical staff and contracted staff both in the frontlines and behind the scenes. I am confident that we are prepared for what may lie ahead during the coming weeks and months.

Our unique products cater to those borrowers who do not t into today's conventional nancing box, to multimillion-dollar commercial and construction loans. Our focus is deliverying fast & easy access to money, even to the most challenging of cases.

I know that the tens of thousands of people working within Fraser Health are going above and beyond each and every hour to ensure that our patients, families and communities are receiving the health services that you need. Every day, I hear heartwarming stories from members of the public about how our teams are taking exceptional measures to better support you when you come to us for care. The tremendous outpouring of support from our communities to each member of our health care team responding

to COVID-19 has truly defined the humanity of this pandemic. To be present for the nightly 7 p.m. displays of appreciation – pots and pans clanging, cars honking – is to witness our communities coming together to proclaim that we are united as one. The signs, cards, and drawings made by children, donations, and well wishes are shows of respect, solidarity, and gratitude that help to raise our spirits during difficult moments. At this crucial time, I urge you to continue being vigilant in our fight against the spread of COVID-19. This means frequent hand washing, staying home whenever possible, practicing physical distancing, and limiting contact with people outside your home. For information you can trust about COVID-19, please visit fraserhealth.ca/covid19. Our collective efforts now will dictate the direction and eventual outcome of this public health crisis, and it is imperative that we are united in our efforts to ‘flatten the curve’.

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday announced more than $1 billion in support of a national medical research strategy to fight COVID-19 that includes vaccine development, the production of treatments, and tracking of the virus. This new funding builds on the $275 million investment for coronavirus research and medical countermeasures announced in March. The federal government will invest in new medical countermeasures to better understand COVID-19, and develop the infrastructure needed to fight the virus here in Canada.

Pandemic modelling is a useful tool, but not a crystal ball BY DR. BONNIE HENRY Provincial Health Officer NOW that we are well and truly into our COVID-19 pandemic response, many people throughout British Columbia and Canada have similar questions and concerns. How bad is it going to get? How long do we have to be physically distant from others and put aside our regular routines? When can we get back to work, see our loved ones and book social events? I understand

the anxiety and frustration that comes with this uncertainty. One of the tools we in B.C., as well as other provinces and the federal government, have used to understand these issues is modelling. In late March, British Columbia was the first province to share its modelling. We contributed to the national modelling in early April, and have now released our latest report. COVID-19 hit the world like a Category 5 hurricane. The most recent B.C. modelling

see whether our efforts are successful, day to day, and what our possibilities are compared to other places in the world. We will continue to publish our ongoing epidemiologic curve, case counts and our test-positive rates each day on the BC Centre for Disease Control’s website. In our latest presentation, we provided even more data: we have shared the demographics and the epidemiology that tell us who has been affected most by this virus – the age ranges, the locations and various types of epidemiological information – to help everyone get a better picture of who, where and when people in B.C. have been affected. We are being transparent and open with this information because, as I know well, we all need hope and we all want to know how our actions are making a difference. I also want to remind everyone that physically distancing from others does not mean being alone or without aid. Reaching out online and allowing community members to help in these challenging times can make a world of difference. We want everyone to stand united and stay strong. Every British Columbian has a part to play in flattening the curve and making a difference. Let’s all continue together to be safe, be calm, be kind and do the right thing.

shows us that in the face of this storm, we have made considerable progress in our province. We have experienced significant damage, but are still standing strong. I want each of you to know that this is for one reason: The immense efforts that you have taken to ‘batten down the hatches’ by being physically distant from others and following the orders and restrictions in place, are truly making a difference. I also want everyone to know that we are in the eye of the hurricane right now, and to fully weather this storm, we must remain 100% committed. The modelling from B.C. and elsewhere clearly shows that if we relax our measures too soon, we will face more severe and unnecessary damage. So how does our modelling help? To begin, we must understand that modelling is not a crystal ball. Instead, it is a useful tool to understand the many situations that we in B.C, as well as people around the world, are in, and the many approaches being taken to flatten the curve. Here in B.C., we also use dynamic modelling to assess what is happening right now, in our province and around the world. This helps guide our decision-making for the future. We are only as strong as our weakest links in society, so modelling also allows us to look over our shoulders at past indicators to see how we’ve done in our attempt to protect people. We can decide what we need to prepare for, and what we can fix right now. Modelling also helps us determine how much longer we need to protect our communities with physical distancing. It is important to understand that all models are inherently imprecise, because they use assumptions that are based on imperfect data, and there is no way for us to know for sure what’s going to happen tomorrow. What we can attempt to see from modelling, though, is how we might influence the curve of a model ourselves, every day, by being extra careful about our physical distancing and other proven measures like cleaning our hands, covering our coughs and staying home when sick. In B.C., we are committed to updating our modelling regularly so that everyone can

TransLink announces temporary layoff notices to 1,492 employees; other cost-saving measures TRANSLINK on Monday announced a series of cost-saving measures to preserve Metro Vancouver’s transit system along with a commitment from the Province to ensure near-regular service can be restored by September. TransLink is losing $75 million per month with ridership down by 83% while still providing transit services for essential workers. It said this rate of financial loss is not sustainable. TransLink and its operating companies announced the following cost-saving measures: * Implement further suspension of transit services on Bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express, beginning this week. * Issue temporary layoff notices to 1,492 employees. These employees work in various positions at TransLink, Coast Mountain Bus Company, and British Columbia Rapid Transit Company. * Reduce senior executive salaries and Board remuneration by 10%. * Reduce organizational costs and program expenditures, including: - Deferral of the 2020 Major Road Network operations, maintenance and rehabilitation program funding to municipalities. - Deferral of 2020 service expansions. * Spend cash reserves to sustain current essential service operations through to the end of 2020. “This has been an incredibly tough decision and one we do not take lightly, said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “We’ve done our best to try and reduce costs through other means, but TransLink is losing $75 million per month, and we’re left with no other options. It’s not lost on me what an impact this decision will have on the lives of our employees and their families. I fully expect those affected will be recalled once TransLink returns to regular operations, which

Canada Post: Keep your dog secure, practice physical distancing “AS Canada Post employees – your family members, neighbours, friends – continue to serve Surrey customers during this challenging time, we are also seeking your assistance to help keep our employees safe, says Canada Post. “Every day, our employees deliver to millions of homes across Canada and an estimated 41% of these households have dogs. They see them every day when delivering your mail and parcels, especially since the weather is warming up and as most customers – both adults and children – are now home during the day. “As much as we love our furry friends, they are protective of their home and their family, and it’s impossible for delivery agents to know how any dog will react when they approach your home to deliver the mail. “Our request to dog owners: Please do not open the door during deliveries or allow your dog to approach our employees while they are out in the community. This makes it difficult to adhere to physical distancing when owners need to retrieve their dogs, and it increases the risk of dog bites. “So far in 2020, our delivery agents in Surrey have already experienced dog incidents. We know this is a difficult time and we appreciate your help in keeping our employees safe, which will also help keep our local communities safe. Physical distancing: We continue to ask Canadians to respect physical (social) distancing with our employees who are delivering mail and serving them in post offices. This means keeping a distance of two metres (six feet), as recommended by public health authorities. Specifically, we are asking the following: * During delivery to your home: Please keep the door closed when our employees are delivering mail and parcels and avoid personally greeting them. * During delivery to your mailbox: If you collect your mail at a community mailbox, an apartment mailroom or other group mailbox location, keep a distance of two metres (six feet) from delivery agents when they are putting mail in your mailbox. * While employees are working in communities: Continue to keep a distance of two metres (six feet) from our employees when they are out working in the community. * In post offices: Practise physical distancing and follow all other measures that have been implemented for your health and safety.

we are now planning for back-to-school in September, if consistent with provincial guidelines. TransLink’s revenue has declined since midMarch due to reduced ridership levels, falling fuel tax revenue, and fare removal on the bus system to promote physical distancing. Since the beginning of the pandemic, TransLink has: * Reduced Bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express services. * Reduced the seating capacity on buses to promote physical distancing. * Introduced rear-door only boarding and suspended fare collection on buses to protect bus operators. * Introduced widespread and intensive cleaning and sanitization measures on bus, HandyDART, SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express. * Deferred the scheduled July 1 fare increase.

Surrey City Council focuses on job creation within local construction sector AT Monday night’s Regular Council – Land Use Meeting, Surrey City Council granted final adoption to projects that have a combined total construction of over $55 million that will create approximately 550 new jobs. “While we all have to do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is equally important to find ways to keep our local construction sector going that is so critical in creating so many meaningful and essential jobs,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Surrey City Council has made it a priority

to ensure there is an environment for our builders and developers to carry through with their projects. Most importantly by doing so, we are making sure that projects are not only design ready, but shovel-ready as soon as possible in order for people to have access to the well-paid and skilled jobs created through the construction sector.” The total cost of the construction projects given final adoption, which include single family homes and a six-story rental apartment building, is $55,201,000.

Home sales to plummet in April with COVID-19 recession, but rebound next year: BCREA VANCOUVER: New projections from the British Columbia Real Estate Association suggest that while the dip in home sales because of COVID-19 doesn’t look good now, the market will recover. The BCREA expects that the April sales figures could fall by as much at 40 per cent and remain depressed through the summer. But it’s predicting a robust recovery next year. “Rising unemployment and a slowing economy are going to really take the wind out (of) the sails, but there’s still going to be extremely low interest rates and a lot of just demographic demand, says Brendon Ogmundson, chief economist with the BCREA. “We should see a vigorous rebound like we’ve seen following past recessions. That’s the most optimistic prediction, provided employers and the government do what they can to have jobs for people to return to. But it also depends on how long it takes to get the economy up and running again after

the unprecedented pandemic recedes. The report says: “Our current forecast is for the Canadian economy to contract approximately four per cent in the first quarter of 2020, followed by a startling 21 per cent decline in the second quarter on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis. Ogmundson says this isn’t like the last three recessions that happened in the past 40 years, but the recovery will be similar. “It’s closer to actually a natural disaster than it is a real kind of recession. This didn’t happen because of misadventures in financial engineering, like back in the financial crisis. It didn’t happen because of bad loans or poor business decisions. The BCREA expects as physical distancing measures are lifted, the pentup demand will translate to a “significant recovery in home sales and prices.

Prime Minister Modi to interact with Chief Ministers on April 27

98-year-old ‘Corona Warrior’ of Punjab hailed by Chief Minister

GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices ! www.dream-carpets.net

|

“THE strongest Corona Warrior of Punjab is 98-year-old Gurdev Kaur from Moga who with her family is stitching masks for Punjab. Such selfless dedication of Punjabis is proof of how strong we are & that we will overcome any challenge which comes our way.” That was the reaction from Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh as he thanked BBC Punjabi for carrying a story on the incredible woman who has inspired everyone in the state. “We are making face masks and distributing among the passersby free of cost,” Gurdev Kaur said in the video shared by the Chief Minister on Twitter on Tuesday. She said her daughters-inlaw and grandchildren are all

involved in sewing masks for the cause. “We all love to do charity and do it as much as possible,” she said, while appealing to the people to follow lockdown norms and help one another. She works daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Take precautionary steps to protect yourself from this

disease. They (government functionaries) also advise us to protect ourselves as much as possible by staying at home,” she said. “I have no vision in one eye and the second eye had cataract surgery 25 years ago but the vision in that eye is very good,” she said.

New Delhi (IANS): Soon after the Union cabinet amended the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1987 in order to ensure the safety of health workers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to assert that it showed his government’s “commitment” to protect the medical fraternity. The Prime Minister tweeted: “The Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 manifests our commitment to protect each and every healthcare worker who is bravely battling COVID-19 on the frontline.” Modi, who chaired the cabinet meeting, added, “It will ensure safety of our professionals. There can be no compromise on their

safety.” From now on, violence against medical professionals will be treated as a cognizable and nonbailable offence. Additionally, it has provisions to provide compensation for injury to healthcare service providers or for damage or loss of property, the government said on Wednesday. “This actually helps protect the entire health fraternity, including doctors, nurses, paramedics and ASHA workers,” said Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. Meanwhile, BJP President J.P. Nadda too welcomed the move, stating that the “entire

nation is standing together with the Corona Warriors who have devoted themselves to serve the people”. Nadda lauded the medical fraternity for their service during the COVID-19 outbreak by “risking their own lives”. Nadda added that not just the Modi government, but even the BJP cadres stood in solidarity with the healthcare workers. He also thanked the Indian Medical Association for withdrawing their symbolic protest against a spate of attacks on health workers after Union Home Minister Amit Shah intervened in the matter earlier in the day.

New ordinance shows our commitment to protect healthcare workers: Modi

New Delhi (IANS): Just six days before the extended lockdown ends in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with Chief Ministers of all states and Union territories on April 27. The Monday meeting, scheduled in the morning, will take place through video link. The exact time of the meeting has yet to be confirmed. The meeting is likely to discuss the country’s overall and state-specific progress in the war on COVID-19 in the second leg of the lockdown and the way forward. It will be the fourth such meeting since the imposition of lockdown in March. While the Centre has allowed partial easing in the lockdown norms from April 20 for activities like road construction, agriculture and mining, a few states, such as Telangana, have decided against relaxations. The Prime Minister is also likely to formulate a common exit plan. The nationwide 21-day lockdown that started on April 14 was extended till May 3 by Modi on the last day of its first stage. Modi said between life and livelihood, he valued saving lives and that prompted him to extend the lockdown.

Cabinet approves Rs 15,000 crore package for fighting COVID-19 outbreak New Delhi (IANS): The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Rs 15,000 crore for what it calls ‘India COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package’. The funds will be utilized in three phases while for immediate COVID-19 emergency response, provision of an amount of Rs 7,774 crore [1 crore = 10 million] has been kept. Meanwhile the rest of the amount will be used for medium-term support for the next 1-4 years, which will be provided under the mis-

sion mode approach, said the government on Wednesday. “The key objectives of the package include mounting emergency response to slow and limit COVID-19 in India through the development of diagnostics and COVID-dedicated treatment facilities, centralized procurement of essential medical equipment and drugs required for treatment of infected patients, strengthen and build resilient National and State health systems to support prevention and

preparedness for future disease outbreaks, setting up of laboratories and bolster surveillance activities, biosecurity preparedness, pandemic research and proactively engage communities and conduct risk communication activities,” said a government statement. These interventions and initiatives would be implemented under the overall umbrella of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In Phase 1, the health ministry with the support of all the other ministries has already undertaken several activities. Additional funds to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore is released under the package to states and union territories (UTs), for strengthening of existing health facilities as COVID Dedicated Hospitals, Dedicated COVID Health Centres and Dedicated COVID Care Centers. Detailed guidelines, protocols and advisory for quarantine, isolation, testing, treatment, disease containment, decontamination, social distancing and surveillance has already been made. Meanwhile, identification hotspots and appropriate containment strategies are also in full swing. Talking about India’s testing facilities, the government said, “Diagnostics laboratories network has been expanded and our testing capacity is increasing everyday. In fact, le-

veraging on the existing multi-disease testing platforms under National TB Elimination Programme, orders for procurement of 13 lakhs [1.3 million] diagnostic kits have been placed to augment COVID-19 testing.” All health workers including Community Health Volunteers (ASHAs) have been covered with insurance. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), N95 masks and ventilators, testing kits and drugs for treatment are being procured centrally, said the government. However, the major share of the expenditure will be used for mounting robust emergency response, strengthening National and State health systems followed by strengthening pandemic research and multi-sector national institutions and platforms. It will be done for community engagement and risk communications and implementation, management, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation components. The cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi also amended the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1987 to ensure safety of India’s medical fraternity with steep fines and making any attack on them a cognisable and non-bailable crime.

Freedom of expression can’t be used to divide nation: Congress New Delhi (IANS): The Congress top leadership seems to be upset over a series of events in Palghar, Maharashtra, where two sadhus were lynched last week, triggering a political row where Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi’s name was dragged by the BJP and a TV channel. “Freedom of expression can’t be used by propagandists to inject poison into the society,” said Ahmed Patel, AICC Treasurer. “The Constitution of India guaranteeing freedom of expression must be followed by all, but libel can’t be allowed,” said Patel. He said while law should take it own course, the freedom of expression can’t allow anyone to sully others’ reputation. The Congress has denied the charge that its activists attacked any journalist, saying “our party does not stoop to this level.” “We are very sure Congressmen have nothing

to do with this. This is not our tradition, this is not our culture,” said K.C. Venugopal, party General Secretary (Organization). Party sources say that “there should be action by the state apparatus,” hinting that the “divisive agenda” cannot be tolerated. The Congress sources insist that there was no communal angle to the Palghar incident. In Maharashtra the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government is supported by the Congress and multiple FIRs have been registered in the case in various parts of the country. “Palghar is a BJP stronghold. We also heard Maharashtra Home Minister who made a statement yesterday that an FIR has been registered against 110 people. Out of these 110 people, not even a single Muslim is there, then how can it become a communal issue?” asked Venugopal after the Congress Working Committee meeting on Thursday.

Corona takes the sheen out of cardamom growers Thiruvananthapuram (IANS): Kerala which leads the country with a giant share of 89 per cent of the total production of cardamom, is finding its growers in a difficult situation. The cardamom growers are reeling as COVID-19 has hit them very hard. The growers sell their produce by participating in the auction, held at Bodinayakkanur in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, which lies close to the Thekkady tour-

ist location in the Idukki district in Kerala. In Kerala, Idukki is the home of cardamom growers who own large and small holdings and the total area under cardamom cultivation is around 38,000 hectares. Though there is an auction centre at Vandanmeddu in Idukki district, the auction centre in Bodinayakkanur is the single most popular centre, as far as the cardamom auction is concerned. Speaking to IANS, Sunny

Mathew, executive member of the Cardamom Growers Association said things are bleak and getting bad. “Ours is a product which fetches the highest price when the colour of the cardamom is best and fresh. Any delay in getting the product out of our farms spells danger. Sadly, it’s been a month now as the premier auction centre is closed. We have never ever had such a long delay and it comes at a time when the

prices were looking bright,” said Mathew, a grower and also an exporter. Cardamom from Kerala farms is auctioned and it goes to north India and for exports. The peak market for this high quality and popular spice, used for baking and cooking purpose across the globe, begins when the yield is taken from September and tapers in January. “This time the production has come down from 28,000

tones, last year to around 18,000 tones. When production comes down, the price rises and in January this year a kilogram of cardamom touched Rs 3,000 and when the lockdown began it was around Rs 2,300,” said Mathew. With Bodinayakkanur now declared as a hotspot for Covid-19, things are going to be bad and it would prevent auctioneers and their agents to arrive there. “We want the government

to come to our support. The Spices Board should take our products and, based on our cost of production, they should lift our stock. If it does not happen, then the production would be seriously affected this year, as we do not have funds to invest. Also liberal moratoriums with regards to interest waiver and repayment also should be there,” said Mathew.

Assamese man walked 1,500 km on foot to be home Guwahati (IANS): Amidst the nationwide lockdown, a 45-years-old migrant worker from Gujarat reached his home in Assam in 24 days after a 2,890-km trip, of which he had to walk about 1,500 km. Jadav Gogoi, who was working as a security guard in Gujarat’s Rajkot city, was admitted at the civil hospital at the Nagaon district headquarters for mandatory quarantine for COVID-19. He was rescued by the locals and police at Ahotguri, 35-km from the district headquarters, on Sunday evening. Doctors attending to Gogoi said that besides obligatory quarantine formalities, he needed other medical treatments as he was physically

exhausted apart from other ailments for walking thousand of kilometres without sufficient food and other precautions. According to the man’s family and villagers, when the lockdown started on March 25, Gogoi left Gujarat with his three colleagues from Bihar in an Uttar Pradesh-bound goods-laden truck. From Uttar Pradesh, Gogoi and his three companions started walking for Bihar on March 27. “The exact distance and names of places he walked could not be ascertained because Jadav, who is not comfortable in reading and speaking Hindi, also could not distinguish where he had alighted in Uttar Pradesh.

Guided by his three colleagues, Gogoi walked till Bihar where the others stayed back,” Asom Jatiatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) leader Dibyajit Hazarika told IANS on phone. The distance by road from Lucknow to Nagaon in central Assam is around 1,500 km. For Gogoi, the last leg of his journey on foot across Bihar was the most strenuous one. From Bihar, he alone had to walk the remaining stretch of around 1,000 km. Hazarika said that Gogoi was in a hurry to reach home and did not even take a day’s rest when his colleagues stayed back in Bihar. According to the AJYCP leader, right from the beginning, he survived on biscuits and

unhygienic water as roadside hotels, food stalls and other eateries had been shut because of the lockdown. Besides, he did not have money as he was robbed of the Rs 4,000 he carried and other valuables including mobile phone on the way. Gogoi’s wife Puspalata told the local media: “He (Gogoi) was working in Gujarat for the past nine months. He had told me that he would come back home permanently on Bohag Bihu and start farming in the village. When the lockdown was announced, he feared we would suffer in his absence and that forced him to come back home on foot.” Ranjit Phukan, a neighbour of Gogoi, told the media, “From March 27 till Sunday, Jadav

called me several times from his own mobile and subsequently from others’ mobile (after he was robbed), but I was not able to lend any real help to him except to give some suggestions during his walkathon.” The Assam government on Monday launched the “Assam Cares” app to provide financial aid to thousands of Assamese stranded in various states due to the lockdown. Assam’s Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said through phones and online platforms, over 4.25 lakh [425,000] Assamese stranded in other states had been contacted. “We have provided a one-time ex gratia of Rs 2,000 to 86,000 of the 4.25 lakh people. Another

instalment would also be considered during the lockdown,” he said. He said over 68,000 Assamese were stuck in Karnataka, 36,000 in Tamil Nadu, 34,000 in Kerala, 21,000 in Maharashtra and the rest in other states. “Through the process of providing financial aid, the government will be able to create database of the stranded people. It will help the state locate them on return to the state after the end of lockdown,” the Assam Minister said. According to officials of six other northeastern states (excluding Assam), over 15,000 people including migrant workers of the northeastern region are stranded in different states of the country due to the lockdown.

Action against landlords for forcing students, migrants for rent New Delhi (IANS): The Delhi government has directed the police and district magistrates to take action against landlords forcing migrant workers or students to pay rents immediately amidst the lockdown. Speaking to IANS, a government official said

an order has been issued taking forward a similar order issued on March 29. The April 22 order said that if any landlord forced students or migrants to pay rents immediately or warn them of eviction, they can be booked under Disaster Management

Act, 2005. The new order directs the District Magistrates to “undertake awareness campaigns on this issue particularly in areas having higher density of workers, migrants or students, to advise affected persons to lodge

complaints to the police control room by calling 100.” It also said that from April 27, the district Deputy Commissioners of Police will submit a weekly report of such complaints and action taken to the DMs on every Monday.

Punjab orders audit of COVID-19 deaths Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered audit of every COVID-19 death to understand and check the high mortality rate in the state. The government was strengthening pandemic containment measures under the guidance of an expert team, the Chief Minister said here on Thursday. He gave this update to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi through video link. The expert group comprises K.K. Talwar, former Director of the PGI Hospital; Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor of State Health University; Rajesh Kumar, former head of the School of Public Health, PGI; as well as experts from the PGI and the John Hopkins University.

On the high mortality rate in the state, he said it was due to co-morbidity and lack of health-seeking behaviour (patients coming late to hospital). Despite the high 6.2 per cent mortality rate, the growth rate of COVID-19 in Punjab was lower than India, with the cases doubling in 16 days against the national average of 9 days. In percentage terms, cases in Punjab had steadily declined from 2.57 per cent of the total cases in India as of March 31 to 1.22 per cent in three weeks till April 22, revealing effective containment in the state, he said. Singh pointed to Nawanshahr as a case of effective containment, appreciated by the

He also urged the states to seek a review by the Finance Commission of its recommendations for the current year since the ground situation had completely changed due to the pandemic. Further, Amarinder Singh urged the Chief Ministers to seek deferment of the full report of the Finance Commission by a year so that the requirements of the states for economic revival and relief as well as rehabilitation could be fully assessed post COVID-19, and adequately provided by the commission. The Finance Commission’s five-year report should begin from April 1, 2021, instead of 2020, after factoring in the COVID impact, Amarinder Singh suggested, urging his counterparts to take up the matter with the Prime Minister, who is spearheading the national efforts to manage and contain the pandemic.

The testing rate in Punjab is 248 per million, which is slightly lower than the national average of 309 per million, excluding rapid testing. On the rapid testing, he said 3,502 cases were tested before the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) suspended the process. The state has 10,500 rapid testing kits supplied by the ICMR, while 10,000 have been ordered by the state, with deliveries in progress.

Punjab sees rise in crime against women amid curfew

Chandigarh (IANS): Following up on his letter to the Prime Minister suggesting a three-pronged strategy to bail out states from the COVID crisis, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday urged his counterparts in states to pursue the matter with the Centre. Amarinder Singh has written to the Chief Ministers to also write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to consider the suggestions he had made to combat the crisis. Pointing out that it was a matter of concern to all states, Amarinder Singh pointed out in his letter to his counterparts that the states are reeling under the impact of shrinking revenues and heightened requirements of welfare and healthcare due to the pandemic. In this context, he underlined the urgent need to request the government of India to give a special three-month COVID revenue grant with flexibility to states in spending as

Also, no case had been reported since March 26, he said. Punjab was doing significantly better than Gujarat, and in terms of cases per million population, even lower than Kerala (9 per million in Punjab vs 12 per million in Kerala), he said. Punjab currently has 257 positive cases, with 16 dead and two critical patients, including one on ventilator, while 53 had been cured or discharged. Chandigarh (IANS): Amid a massive increase in complaints of domestic violence against women since the curfew came into effect, Punjab Police has formulated a detailed strategy to tackle such cases with daily action taken reports to be submitted by the Deputy Superintendents of Police for crime against women. Figures show there has been a 21 per cent increase from 4,709 to 5,695 in total cases of crime against women between February and April 20, and a similar percentage of increase in cases of domestic violence against women from 3,287 to 3,993 during this period. On the other hand, there has been a substantial decrease in registration of cases relating to dowry harassment, rape and

eve-teasing [harassment of women] cases during this period, possibly because men and women are not stepping out and there is increased police presence. Giving details, Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said the average number of calls received on 112 per day went up to 133 -- a whopping 34 per cent for domestic violence cases from March 20 to April 20 from the previous three months of average of 99.33. The per day increase in total crime against women cases in this period is 30 per cent. To take stock of the situation and discuss measures to tackle this increase, the DGP on Thursday held a video conference with all DSPs of crime against women cell and Women Help Desk officials.

life, state Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said all the people are now a source of inspiration for the corona-affected patients. He said the health department and the district administration worked day and night for bringing the district out of the red zone. The minister also praised the residents of SBS Nagar district, previous known as

Nawanshahr, and said the curfew restrictions have been followed by them as per the directions of the government. He said from March 19 to March 26, a total of 18 corona cases came up. Punjab seeks bailout package for COVID-19 crisis Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday suggested to the Centre a three-pronged strategy to bailout the states from the COVID-19 crisis, including a three-month special financial package. Citing the collapse in revenues as a result of the lockdown of business and industry, the Chief Minister in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged him to ask the Fifteenth Finance Commission to review its interim report for 2020-21 in the context of the much lower revenue share for the states compared with what was expected from the earlier projections which assumed 7 per cent growth of GDP. Noting that a zero growth scenario in GDP

for India was not unlikely, he said some analysts were projecting even negative growth. Given the likelihood of very low growth, which was expected to cause the revenue shortfall to last for the whole year, Amarinder Singh requested the Prime Minister to direct the Fifteenth Finance Commission to defer the submission of its full report to October 2021, when they will be better able to make a realistic assessment of the likely growth of the economy over the next five years. “Nothing would be worse than getting committed to a five-year revenue sharing projection based on unrealistically high growth projections,” he said, suggesting that the Finance Commission could make another

interim report for 2021-22. Observing that the 40-day national lockdown till May 3 was perhaps necessary to curb the spread of COVID-19, Amarinder Singh said it has resulted in massive economic disruption, which in turn had created very serious fiscal difficulties for all states. Punjab was facing a huge stress on the state exchequer, he said, adding the near complete shutdown of trade, business and industry had led to a collapse in revenues, and this had happened at a time when essential health and relief expenditures needed to be massively scaled up. “With the states continuing to shoulder their committed liabilities and facing new demands on relief, health infrastructure

expenditure etc, it is only fair and just that the Fifteenth Finance Commission should be requested to recommend a special COVID-19 revenue grant for 2020-21,” said Amarinder Singh. In his letter, the Chief Minister sought an immediate three-month special financial assistance package to enables states to handle the additional health-related expenditure and basic relief expenditure, and suggested that the package should give the states maximum flexibility to design, implement and execute it in a manner that is customised to local problems and needs. The immediate package may be adjusted against the special COVID-19 revenue grant, as proposed, he said.

Punjab Chief Minister seeks package for state power sector Chandigarh (IANS): Citing adverse impact on the finances of state discoms amid the COVID-19 lockdown, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a financial package for the state power sector. He suggested a slew of measures to rescue the Punjab State Power Corporation

Ltd (PSPCL) and others from the current crisis and ensure that consumers are not harassed or hassled in these difficult times. The Power Finance Corporation (PFC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited and other financial institutions should provide loans to the power sector at reduced rate of 6 per cent per annum for bridging the

revenue gap, said Amarinder Singh. He also suggested extension of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) moratorium on repayment of outstanding loans and interest from the current three to at least six months. In addition, the applicable interest rate on deferred payment should be considered at concessional rate, he said.

Other suggestions made by the Chief Minister included reduction in coal prices, waiver of GST levied on coal cost and railway freight for 2020-21, waiver of capacity or fixed charges payable on account of capacity not scheduled due to load crash and 50 per cent reduction in inter-state transmission charges.

Punjab cuts expenses to mobilize funds for COVID-19 crisis Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government on Tuesday announced a series of cost-cutting measures, including an immediate 25 per cent reduction in entitlements for petroleum product expenses of all gov-

ernment departments. However, the frontline health, medical education, police, food and agriculture departments would be exempted. The reduction will remain in force till the

Department of Finance resubmits its proposal for review to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. The decision was taken at a virtual meeting of the sub-committee on finance, chaired by Amarinder Singh, who stressed on the need for an exit strategy, pointing out that the state could not be kept under lockdown indefinitely. The report of the 20-member expert committee working on the strategy is expected this week, an official spokesperson told IANS. Amid concerns expressed by Finance Minister Manpreet Badal over the critical fiscal situation in the state in the light of all revenue receipts drying up, the meeting decided that tough decisions are needed to be taken, as an interim measure, to help the state tide over these difficult times. Auburn Hills, Mich: Keeping customers coming back has helped carry FCA to three segment wins in the Automotive Loyalty Awards by IHS Markit. The awards, marking their 24th year, are given annually to recognize manufacturers who demonstrate superior performance in customer retention. The Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 were recognized by IHS Markit for having the highest model loyalty in the pickup segment for the 2019 calendar year. Chrysler Pacifica earned honors in the van segment and Jeep® Grand Cherokee in the SUV segment. Of the 15 category winners, FCA had the most vehicles taking the top spot in their respective segments with three awards. “Congratulations to FCA for their efforts on customer retention for these models,” said Joe LaFeir, senior vice president and general manager, automotive, at IHS Markit. “We honor their commitment and focus on this important strategy in this truly competitive environment.” The Automotive Loyalty Awards by IHS Markit are based on an analysis of nearly 17.5 million new vehicle registrations during the 2019 calendar year. Toyota C-HR Carves Out Its Own Niche for 2020 with New Exterior Styling TORONTO, ON: What happens when Toyota designers blend sport coupe, hatchback and compact crossover? The boldly expressive, fun to drive and utterly unique C-HR happens. The C-HR’s standout design brings an updated look for 2020 with a restyled front fascia, LED headlamps and new wheel designs. There’s more pure Toyota value, too, with all three grades – LE, XLE Premium and Limited – adding new amenities. The Toyota C-HR broke new design ground for the automaker, which applied new manufacturing techniques to take a highly sculpted concept-car body design into production while preserving its essence. The result melds sport coupe personality with crossover versatility. The C-HR comes equipped with standard Toyota Safety Sense P™ (TSS-P), a multifeature advanced active safety suite that bundles Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). The STAR Safety System comes with: Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Smart Stop Technology® (SST). Also complementing TSS-P are 10 standard airbags, standard Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) and a rear backup camera. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on the XLE Premium and Limited models. The C-HR packs a lot of attitude in a compact package that measures 4,350 mm long on a 2,640 mm wheelbase – making the C-HR a tight, agile form that’s a joy to wheel through congested urban areas. Never one to blend in, the C-HR updates market and purchases or leases another new vehicle of the same make, model or manufacturer. The 2020 Ram 1500 is the no-compromise benchmark for durability, technology, efficiency and convenience with features never before offered in a pickup. The Ram 1500 features up to 12,750 pounds of towing capability and 2,300 pounds of payload. The Ram Heavy Duty blends extreme performance and towing capability with the segment’s most refinement and operator comfort features. The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty offers a towing capacity of 35,100 pounds and a payload capacity of 7,680 pounds. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica meanwhile reinvents the minivan segment with an unprecedented level of functionality, versatility, technology and bold styling. Re-engineered from the ground up on an all-new platform when first introduced in 2016 for the 2017 model year, the Pacifica delivers class-leading gasoline and hybrid powertrains to the minivan segment. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most awarded SUV ever and the vehicle that has long defined what a premium SUV should be. The Grand Cherokee lineup offers a variety of models, including the Trackhawk, the most powerful and quickest SUV ever, as well as the most capable factory-produced and most luxurious Grand Cherokee models ever with the Trailhawk and Summit.

its extroverted style for 2020 with a redesigned front fascia, headlamps, bumper and grille.

Added features enhance value for 2020. All C-HR models already came equipped with Apple CarPlay compatibility and

now, for 2020, standard Android Auto compatibility completes the smartphone compatible suite. The C-HR’s punchy dual-overhead cam 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces 144 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 139 lb. of torque at 3,800 rpm. The engine employs many of Toyota’s latest-generation technologies, including Variable Valve Timing (VVT) with intelligence and Valvematic valve lift control. The front-wheel drive C-HR comes standard with the Continuously Variable Transmission with intelligence and Shift mode (CVTi-S). A preload differential helps to distribute torque between the front wheels during low-speed operation to make for easier, composed driving. Drivers will welcome the powertrain’s well-sorted nature, and they’ll love Sport mode and the simulated 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic feature.

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

Indo-Canadian Voice Main | Saturday, Apr. 25, 2020

Who’s fighting the obesity and diabetes pandemics?

DAY after day, health officials stress that the best way to fight the coronavirus is by staying home, keeping our distance from others, and practicing good hygiene. But human isolation is crippling the world’s economy. So, does this approach make sense when other devasting pandemics have been raging for years and killing more people? The number of coronavirus deaths is changing daily. To date, more than 180,000 people are said to have died worldwide, over 45,000 in the U.S, and over 1,800 in Canada. But the World Health Organization reports that obesity has reached epidemic propor-

tions globally, killing 2.8 million people annually, or 7,671 people per day. Diabetes and high blood glucose annually kill 3.8 million people worldwide, or 10,411 per day. So, what is the difference? The coronavirus pandemic is killing people faster for all to see. This makes headline news night after night. It’s the perfect medical and economic disaster, the likes of which the world has never before encountered. Yet, like others in the past, this virus will gradually fade away. But we’re living in Never Never Land if we believe the slow, silent, pandemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes will fade away. It won’t happen, and we will never hear about it because if has no drama. No 24-hour TV coverage. No infectious disease doctors to report its lethal progress. Nor, does it have our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, or U.S. President Donald Trump, to reassure us all will be well. But a train wreck is coming. It’s like the boy who applied for a job at the railroad station. He was asked, “What would you do if you saw a train coming west at 100 miles an hour, and another train coming east on the same

track, and they were just a quarter of a mile apart?” He replied, “I’d run and get my brother, because he’s never seen a train wreck.” Deaths from obesity and Type 2 diabetes will slowly, silently, and surely bring our health care systems to their knees. Obesity and Type 2 diabetes lead to expensive medical complications such as heart attack, kidney failure, blindness, leg amputations and orthopedic troubles. Scientists will eventually develop a vaccine to control the coronavirus. And our economy, badly bruised, will survive. But researchers will never discover a vaccine to control poor human behaviours. We won’t ever see medical experts, health officials, Prime Ministers or Presidents discussing how to control the pandemic of poor lifestyle choices, arguing that we must take draconian measures and shut down society to stop the madness. So obesity and Type 2 diabetes will continue to escalate with catastrophic results. That’s a big difference between coronavirus deaths and those due to obesity and Type 2 diabetes. One is an invisible virus that shows

little mercy and stymies our best efforts to halt it. The other pandemic is one that good sense and a sound lifestyle could stop. But deaths from obesity and Type 2 diabetes, although less dramatic than coronavirus, are crippling our economy and society just the same. We are all complicit in our societal response to pandemics. We are willing to take collective action to stop a virus. But what are we willing to do – as individuals and as a society – to fight lifestyle diseases? Shakespeare was right when he wrote, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” Or, as Pogo the cartoon character advised, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Sign-up at www.docgiff.com to receive our weekly e-newsletter. Shah has acceded to our request to bring pilgrims stranded at Nanded back to Punjab: Amarinder Singh Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had acceded to their demand to allow Punjab pilgrims stranded at Nanded in Maharashtra to return home. The Chief Minister had urged the Union Home Minister on this after his Maharashtra counterpart had said that the Centre’s permission was required for that. Amarinder Singh had spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Udhav Thackery, who had said permission would be needed from the Centre for the return of the stranded pilgrims in view of the national lockdown. The Punjab Chief Minister then wrote to Shah, urging him to allow the return of the pilgrims, stranded at Gurdwara Sri Nanded Sahib in Maharashtra amid lockdown due to COVID-19, by bus to Punjab. Meanwhile, Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal thanked Shah for speaking to Thackeray for the evacuation of Sikh devotees stranded at the historic Gurdwara Hazur Sahib at Nanded. The Bathinda MP also asked the Punjab government to permit buses in which devotees were being brought to the state from Maharashtra. “Came to Delhi to meet HM @AmitShah ji & thank him for speaking to Maharashtra CM today to fast track repatriation of Sikh devotees stranded at Hazur Sahib. Now request Pb govt to give permission to buses arranged by SAD since 3 days to bring them back home at earliest,” Harsimrat tweeted. Around 2,000 pilgrims from Punjab had gone to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Hazur Sahib in Nanded in Maharashtra before the lockdown was imposed. Due to the cancellation of trains, all devotees were stranded there.
