Kamala Harris makes history by accepting Democratic vice presidential nomination KAMALA Harris on Wednesday became the first Black woman and first Asian American to join a major U.S. party’s presidential ticket as she accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination. Three generations of women — Harris’ sister Maya Harris, her niece Meena Harris and her stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff — delivered the speech virtually officially nominating Harris. Harris noted: “This week marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment. And we celebrate the women who fought for that right. Yet so many of the Black women who helped secure that victory were still prohibited from voting, long after its ratification. But they were undeterred. “Without fanfare or recognition, they organized, testified, rallied, marched, and fought—not just for their vote, but for a seat at the table. These women and the generations that followed worked to make democracy and opportunity real in the lives of all of us who followed.

Kamala Harris delivering her acceptance speech. “They paved the way for the trailblazing leadership of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.” She spoke of mother, saying: “There’s another woman, whose name isn’t known, whose story isn’t shared. Another woman whose shoulders I stand on. And that’s my mother—Shyamala Gopalan Harris. “She came here from India at age 19 to pursue her dream of curing cancer. At the University of California Berkeley, she met my father, Donald Harris—

who had come from Jamaica to study economics. “They fell in love in that most American way—while marching together for justice in the civil rights movement of the 1960s.” She added: “When I was 5, my parents split and my mother raised us mostly on her own. Like so many mothers, she worked around the clock to make it work—packing lunches before we woke up— and paying bills after

Joe Biden. overcome this season of darkness in America. We will choose hope over fear, facts over fiction, fairness over privilege. “I’m a proud Democrat and I will be proud to carry the banner of our party into the general election. “But while I’ll be a democratic candidate, I will be an American president. I’ll work hard for those who didn’t support me, as hard for them

as I did for those who did vote for me. That’s the job of a president, to represent all of us, not just our base or our party. “This is not a partisan moment. This must be an American moment.” Biden also said that Trump has “cloaked America in darkness for much too long” and has unleashed “too much anger, too much fear, too much division”. If Trump is re-elected, Biden said: “(Coronavirus) Cases and deaths will remain far too high. More mom and pop businesses will close their doors and this time for good. Working families will struggle to get by and, yet, the wealthiest 1 per cent will get tens of billions of dollars in new tax breaks”. The “assault on the Affordable Care Act will continue until it’s de-

stroyed”, he added. Trump has “failed in his most basic duty” to protect Americans from the virus, said the former Vice President. Biden also took a moment during his nomination acceptance speech to thank former President Barack Obama saying: “You were a great president.” Before his acceptance speech, Biden was introduced by a video that went through the former Vice President’s life, and career, and highlighted his role as a father, husband and political leader. His children, Ashley Biden and Hunter Biden, also spoke. “Joe Biden’s agenda for the Indian American community” - Pages 42-43

Biden accepts Democratic Party’s presidential nomination Washington (IANS): Former US Vice President Joe Biden has formally accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination to take on incumbent President Donald Trump in the November 3 election. His acceptance speech came on the last day of the four-day Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, which also marked 33 years since he made his first bid for the White House, reports ABC News. “It’s with great honour and humility, I accept this nomination for president of the United States of America,” the 77-year-old said while speaking from a mostly empty event centre in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. “It is time for us, for we, the people, to come together. And make no mistake, united we can and will

we went to bed. Helping us with homework at the kitchen table— and shuttling us to church for choir practice. “She made it look easy, though I know it never was. My mother instilled in my sister, Maya, and me the values that would chart the course of our lives. She raised us to be proud, strong Black women. And she raised us to know and be proud of our Indian heritage. She taught us to put family first—the family you’re born into and the family you choose. “Family, is my husband Doug, who I met on a blind date set up by my best friend. Family is our beautiful children, Cole and Ella, who as you just heard, call me Momala. Family is my sister. Family is my best friend, my nieces and my godchildren. Family is my uncles, my aunts—my chitthis. Family is Mrs. Shelton—my second mother who

lived two doors down and helped raise me. Family is my beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha…our Divine 9… and my HBCU brothers and sisters. Family is the friends I turned to when my mother—the most important person in my life—passed away from cancer. “And even as she taught us to keep our family at the center of our world, she also pushed us to see a world beyond ourselves. She taught us to be conscious and compassionate about the struggles of all people. To believe public service is a noble cause and the fight for justice is a shared responsibility. “That led me to become a lawyer, a District Attorney, Attorney General, and a United States Senator. And at every step of the way, I’ve been guided by the words I spoke from the first time I stood in a courtroom: Kamala Harris, For the People. “I’ve fought for children, and survivors of sexual assault. I’ve fought against transnational gangs. I took

on the biggest banks, and helped take down one of the biggest forprofit colleges. I know a predator when I see one. “My mother taught me that service to others gives life purpose and meaning. And oh, how I wish she were here tonight but I know she’s looking down on me from above. I keep thinking about that 25-yearold Indian woman—all of five feet tall—who gave birth to me at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. “On that day, she probably could have never imagined that I would be standing before you now speaking these words: I accept your nomination for Vice President of the United States of America.” She noted: “Today… that country feels distant. Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods.” She asserted: “We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better, and do the important work. A president who will bring all of us

together—Black, White, Latino, Asian, Indigenous—to achieve the future we collectively want. “We must elect Joe Biden.” She went on to extol Biden’s character and achievements. Harris added: “Right now, we have a president who turns our tragedies into political weapons. Joe will be a president who turns our challenges into purpose. Joe will bring us together to build an economy that doesn’t leave anyone behind. Where a good-paying job is the floor, not the ceiling. Joe will bring us together to end this pandemic and make sure that we are prepared for the next one. Joe will bring us together to squarely face and dismantle racial injustice, furthering the work of generations.” Harris concluded by appealing: “In this election, we have a chance to change the course of history. We’re all in this fight. You, me, and Joe—together. What an awesome responsibility. What an awesome privilege.”

PREMIER John Horgan in a statement recognizing Muharram, the Islamic New Year, on Thursday said: “Today marks the beginning of a new year for Muslim communities throughout British Columbia and around the world. “The holy month of Muharram is a time of spiritual reflection, prayer and mourning for the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed

John Horgan and an important figure in Islam who stood for justice and equality.

“As our province continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, Muharram reminds us to stand up for the most vulnerable people in our communities and remain steadfast in our efforts to keep all British Columbians safe. VCH targeting young adults as they represent the biggest increase of test positive cases ALTHOUGH the number of COVID-19 cases in the Vancouver Coastal Health region is down among the seniors who are most impacted by it, the disease is still gaining ground in millennials in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. According to data compiled by VCH’s Public Health Surveillance Unit, people aged 2039 represent the biggest increase of test positive cases in the region since Phase 3 of BC’s Restart Plan began on June 24. “In Phase 1 of B.C.’s Restart Plan, in the first months of the pandemic, 43 per cent of our cases were in the

60-plus age group — the demographic where we see the most serious disease — and those in the 20-39 age group only represented 21 per cent of our cases,” said Dr. Patricia Daly, VCH Chief Medical Health Officer. “In Phase 3, the demographic curve is trending the other way: the 60-plus age group now represents 16 per cent of our cases, while those aged 20-39 make up 56 per cent of our cases.” As of August 18, there have been 1,526 reported cases of COVID-19 in VCH, infecting people from newborn to age 104. The data shows the median age of those who

test positive for COVID-19 has now dropped — from 57 years old in Phase 1 to 34 years old in Phase 3. “We expected to see our curve rise once we moved into this phase of reopening, so these increasing case counts are not a surprise, but they do provide an important reminder to all of us to continue following safety measures such as staying home when you’re sick,” said Daly. The reasons for the shift in demographic are varied, said Daly, including the reopening of businesses where younger adults work, such as restaurants and

bars. Another reason? Partying. “We’re seeing transmission take place in nightclubs in particular, but also at bars and restaurants, while boating and in other indoor social settings. It’s the way people act and interact in these settings that’s problematic: sharing food and drinks, speaking loudly and in close proximity if there’s background noise, and not social distancing among strangers, especially if they’ve been drinking alcohol. When people aren’t taking measures to protect themselves and others from COVID-19 in these settings,

it means more potential risk to the public.” For most young adults, COVID-19 causes very mild illness, but they may spread the virus to seniors and others at risk of more serious disease. This can occur in families, shared households or workplaces. In an effort to reach millennials and those younger, Vancouver Coastal Health has launched a new campaign that includes a series of COVID-safe summer guides posted on social media and online with tips for visiting restaurants, getting together with friends, playing recreational sports,

going on road trips, going to the beach, and COVID-safe sex. A poster campaign and a TikTok video series of do’s and don’ts are also aimed at preventing the spread of the virus. “We want people to get out and enjoy summer with their friends, but we can’t forget that COVID-19 is still in our communities,” said Daly. “By following public health guidance, we can help limit the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable to severe disease.” For links in the story, visit our website voiceonline.com

Province introduces new measures to enforce COVID-19 public safety POLICE and other provincial enforcement officers are being given the ability to issue $2,000 violation tickets for owners or organizers contravening the provincial health officer’s (PHO) order on gatherings and events. They will also be able to issue $200 violation tickets to individuals not following the direction of police or enforcement staff at events or who refuse to comply with requests to follow PHO orders or safe operating procedures, or respond with abusive behaviour. Effective immediately, these new measures are enacted under the provincial state of emergency, using the extraordinary powers of the Emergency Program Act (EPA) in ongoing support of B.C.’s COVID-19 response and Restart Plan. “These orders will help us put a stop to the selfish acts of a small minority of British Co-

lumbians, who are threatening to erode the progress our province has made in controlling COVID-19,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “While I’m disappointed these measures are now necessary, I am taking this action to give police agencies and provincial enforcement officers the ability to take action against those who are putting people’s lives at risk.” In addition to enabling action from police, the Province is enlisting compliance and enforcement staff from provincial ministries to support enforcement and help issue tickets for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes liquor, cannabis and gaming inspectors, community safety unit inspectors and conservation officers. “As a regional federation of local governments, we welcome these new measures,

Mike Farnworth and we look forward to collaborating with the Province to ensure a co-ordinated and thoughtful response to COVID-19,” said Linda Buchanan, Vice Chair, Metro Vancouver board of directors. “Metro Vancouver will continue its critical role as a convener on ideas and strategies for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our region and supporting the Province in keeping COVID-19 at bay.” The enforcement focus will be on $2,000 fines to owners,

operators and organizers for contraventions of the provincial health officer’s order on gatherings and events. This includes hosting a private party or public event in excess of 50 people, failing to provide appropriate hand sanitation and washroom facilities, failing to provide sufficient space in the venue for physical distancing, failing to obtain a list of names and contacts at large event or having more than five guests gathered in a vacation accommodation. When required, police and other provincial enforcement officers will also be able to actively enforce the order and ticket a series of other infractions, including: * $200 violation tickets for individuals who actively encourage others to attend gatherings or events that do not comply with established requirements, or refuse to leave or disperse when directed to

do so by enforcement officers; and, * $200 violation tickets for individuals who refuse to comply with requests to follow the PHO order or safe operating procedures of a restaurant, bar or other licensed establishment, or respond with abusive behaviour towards employees. Violation tickets expand the Province’s enforcement toolkit to support the COVID-19 response. Police and other provincial enforcement officers will independently exercise discretion to issue tickets for Emergency Program Act order violations under the Offence Act’s Violation Ticket Administration and Fines Regulation. If violation tickets do not act as a deterrent, or in cases of particularly egregious contraventions or for repeat offenders, police can recommend charges in relation to the offence. On conviction, judicial

penalties of up to $10,000 may be levied. “ABLE BC is pleased to see the Province step up compliance and enforcement during this recent surge in COVID-19 cases, and we’re happy to assist where we can,” said Jeff Guignard, Executive Director of the Alliance of Beverage Licensees. “Our primary concern continues to be the health and safety of both patrons and workers in British Columbia.” Working in partnership with local governments and other agencies, a comprehensive and integrated compliance and enforcement regime is being built to manage the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. These violation tickets build on existing tools, such as the ability to suspend or revoke the business or liquor licenses of problematic operators. Canada Revenue Agency opens applications for enhanced Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy NATIONAL Revenue Minister Diane Lebouthillier on Monday announced that the Canada Revenue Agency has opened applications for Period 5 – the first period of the enhanced CEWS program. Program changes for Periods 5-9 include: * The extension of the CEWS, including redesigned program details, until November 21. * Increased eligibility, meaning that all eligible employers who’ve experienced a revenue drop can now qualify for a base subsidy. The subsidy amount is based on the revenue drop. * Employers who are especially hard-hit can qualify for a top-up of up to 25%. * Provide certainty for employers that have already made business decisions for July and August, by ensuring they will not receive a subsidy rate lower than they would have under the previous rules. As the economy re-opens, the federal government is encouraging employers to take another look at the CEWS program and see how it can support their workers and their operations. The Canada Revenue Agency’s updated CEWS calculator can help small and large employers alike, by guiding them through a step-by-step process to prepare their applications and giving them a preview of the subsidy they may qualify for, based on the information they enter. Lebouthillier said: “The Canada Revenue Agency is here to help Canadian employers of all sizes in getting their employees back to work. The Government has made significant enhancements to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy by incorporating user and stakeholder feedback. As of today, more eligible employers can apply to receive funding. 18% of Canadians making little to no effort to stop coronavirus spread ANALYSIS of the latest public opinion data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute places Canadians into three broad categories in a measure of their behaviors and mindset, known as the COVID Compliance Index. The Infection Fighters follow virus suppression behaviours carefully and comprise nearly half the population (47%). The Inconsistent represent just over one-third of Canadians (36%) and take a more half-in, half-out approach to flattening the curve. The remaining one-in-five (18%) are Cynical Spreaders who have expanded their social circles, don’t physically distance and are ambivalent towards hand washing and mask wearing. This last group also professes a clear dislike for the way public health officials and political leaders have handled the pandemic. More Key Findings: * Age is among the most significant factors in the COVID-19 Compliance Index. The younger Canadians are the less likely to follow recommended protocols. * Political affiliation is also correlated with a person’s categorization in the Index. Past Conservative Party voters are four times more likely to be Cynical Spreaders than those who voted for the Liberal Party or New Democratic Party in 2019. * More than nine-in-10 Infection Fighters are regularly wearing a mask when in contact with non-family members indoors. This drops to 63 per cent among the Inconsistent and just 15 per cent among the Cynical Spreaders. * Of 10 different COVID-19 spreading behaviours (not washing hands, not social distancing, not wearing a mask, etc.) Infection Fighters are engaged in either one or zero. Three-quarters of Cynical Spreaders are engaged in five or more of these activities.

CERB to be extended by 4 weeks; transitioning to ‘more flexible and generous’ EI program announced DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, on Thursday

They also announced that in preparation for this transition and to ensure support continues for Canadians whose employment has been impacted by the pandemic, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will be extended by an additional four weeks to a maximum of 28 weeks. This means that for the many Canadians expecting to exhaust their CERB benefits at the end of August, they will now be able to access an additional month of support. The ministers said that when Canadians needed support the most, the government introduced the CERB, which helped more than 8.5 million people pay their bills during this challenging time. As the government safely restarts the economy, many of those Canadians will still need support while they continue to look for work. That is why the government will transition people who have been receiving the CERB to a more flexible and generous EI program for those who qualify, which will provide them additional features and tools to get back into the workforce. The COVID-19 pandemic may have had a negative impact on a worker’s weekly earnings,

Chrystia Freeland either because they lost their job or saw their hours of work reduced. To give Canadians seeking employment the support they need to get back on their feet, the government is making changes to the EI program. EI will now be available to more Canadians, including those who would not have qualified for EI in the past, adding more than 400,000 people into the program. Those receiving EI will be eligible for a taxable benefit rate of at least $400 per week, or $240 per week for extended parental benefits, and regular benefits will be accessible for a minimum duration of 26 weeks. The government will continue to work with provinces and territories to ensure Canadians receiving EI benefits have access to skills training and employment supports, to help them get back to work. The government will also freeze the EI insurance premium rates for two years, so Canadian workers and businesses will not face immediate increases to costs and payroll deductions due to the additional expenses resulting from the pandemic. Additionally, to ensure Canadians receive the support they need during these challenging times, the government is proposing to implement three new benefits: * The Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) will provide $400 per week for up to 26 weeks, to workers who are self-employed or are not eligible for EI and who still require income support and who are available and looking for work. This benefit will support Canadians whose income has dropped or not returned due to COVID-19. The benefit will allow Canadians to earn more income while on claim as well as include links to Job Bank, Canada’s national employment service, with career planning tools for those seeking employment. In addition, the government will be working with provinces and territories to share information to ensure that Canadians have access to tools and training opportunities to successfully return to the workforce. * The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) will provide $500 per week for up to two weeks, for workers who are sick or must selfisolate for reasons related to COVID-19. * The Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB) will provide $500 per week for up to 26 weeks per household, for eligible Canadians unable to work because they must care for: – a child under age 12 due to the closures of schools or daycares because of COVID-19. – a family member with a disability or a dependent because their day program or care facility is closed due to COVID-19. – a child, a family member with a disability, or a dependent who is not attending school, daycare, or other care facilities under the advice of a medical professional due to being at high-risk if they contract COVID-19. The government intends to introduce new legislation to support the implementation of the new benefits. Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, added: “Canadians have had to show incredible resiliency in the face of a global pandemic and the worst economic crisis of our generation. Today’s announcement demonstrates our government’s commitment to supporting the health and safety of Canadians while the economy rebuilds. Since the earliest days of this crisis, the Canada Revenue Agency has made serving Canadians our priority. The CRA stands ready to help Canadians through this next phase by delivering the new Canada Recovery benefits.”

For five years, she has been at the heart of economic issues, including the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Recently, she played a crucial role in the Team Canada response to COVID-19, said Trudeau. Dominic LeBlanc becomes Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. He will also remain President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada. He is familiar with his new portfolio, having served as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs from 2018 to 2019. Earlier on Tuesday, Trudeau asked Governor General Julie Payette to prorogue Parliament. “This will provide an opportunity to present a Speech from the Throne on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, the same week the House of Commons was previously scheduled to return. This speech will present the government’s detailed vision for the future, and will provide the opportunity for a vote of confidence on this new plan,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s

Bill Morneau Office. MORNEAU on Monday resigned as federal finance minister after five years in that portfolio, proving rumours about differences between him and Trudeau to be true. He is also quitting as MP for Toronto Centre, the riding he has been representing since 2015. Morneau had reportedly lost support among Liberal MPs after the shocking revelation that he had accepted trips from WE Charity and only reimbursed the charity just before his appearance before a House of Commons committee. He didn’t recuse himself from cabinet discussions to approve a $544-million contract for WE charity. Both Morneau and Trudeau are under investigation by the Ethics Commissioner in relation to WE Charity to see if they breached the Conflict of Interest Act. Earlier, there were reports that former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney was likely to replace Morneau and that he has been advising the government. Trudeau in a statement said: “Today, Bill has announced that he will put forward his name as a candidate to be the next Secretary General of the OECD. Canada will vigorously support his bid to lead this important global institution that will play a critical role in the global economic recovery.” Trudeau said: “Today, I spoke with Bill Morneau and accepted his resignation. Since the day he was first elected and became Canada’s Finance Minister nearly five years ago, Bill has worked relentlessly to support all Canadians and create a resilient, fair economy that benefits everyone. Under his leadership, Canada developed a strong economy with one of the best balance sheets in the G7, created over one million jobs, achieved the lowest unemployment rate in recorded history, lifted over one million people out of poverty, and created a coherent plan to protect the environment while growing the economy. Bill played a central role in transformational projects like the enhancement of the Canada Pension Plan and the creation of the Canada Child Benefit, which are improving the lives of millions of Canadian families. “That focus and commitment to supporting families and businesses has served Canadians well since the outset of the global pandemic. Bill led the creation of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, along with many other emergency measures that millions of Canadians and thousands of businesses continue to rely on today. Every step of the way, Bill and I have worked closely together, along with our team of cabinet ministers and caucus members to help Canadians navigate this challenging time. Our number one priority has been supporting Canadian families and businesses the best and fastest way possible. Thanks to his unwavering leadership and commitment to service through the pandemic, our government has laid the groundwork for a strong economic recovery. “I want to thank Bill for everything he has done to improve the quality of life of Canadians and make our country a better and fairer place to live. I have counted on his leadership, advice, and close friendship over the years and I look forward to that continuing well into the future. Bill, you have my deepest gratitude and I know you will continue making great contributions to our country and for Canadians in the years to come.”

Youth arrested for alleged robberies involving use of Letgo app THE Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit has arrested a 16-yearold youth for a string of alleged robberies that reportedly involved the use of the online marketplace app, Letgo. The four robberies occurred between March 15 and June 27 in Whalley. Each of these incidents took place during daylight hours and were the result of meet-ups arranged online for the purpose of buy-

ing high-value cellphones. During the encounters, the victims were allegedly sprayed with bear mace and robbed of their cellphones. With the help of witnesses, the Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit identified the suspect and on August 13, the suspect was arrested. The suspect was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

“There’s always a risk in meeting someone you don’t know through an online marketplace app, even in daylight hours,” said Cpl. Dan Lowe of the Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit. “It’s important for the public to be aware of the risk before considering this type of transaction.” Surrey RCMP once again reminds people that meeting with strangers through online marketplace apps can

pose a risk to their safety. It’s important to practice extra safety measures before and during these meetings. Here are some tips recommended by the Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit: * Insist on a public meeting place during the day, such as local businesses with regular foot traffic * Gather as much information as possible so you know who you’re dealing with,

such as their full name and cell phone number * Do not meet in a secluded place or invite strangers into your home * Only meet during daylight hours or in a well-lit and heavily populated area * Be extra careful when buying or selling high value items * Tell a friend or family member where you’re going and when you’re meeting the

buyer/seller * Take your cell phone and a friend along to accompany you * Always trust your instincts while arranging a meeting Anyone with information about these robberies is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to make an anonymous report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.

Sexual image extortion cases on the rise in Surrey RCMP caution residents that like many jurisdictions, Surrey is seeing an increase in sexual image extortion cases with 77 reports in the second quarter of 2020. As shared in their April 21 news release, many of these files involve threats to expose a sexual image of the victim to other people if the victim does not pay money or provide more sexual content.

In a number of cases, individuals met the perpetrators online through social media or dating apps, and shared images and videos believing they were engaging in a mutual relationship. The photos and videos were later used for the purpose of extortion. In the reported incidents, the average ages of victims were between 18 and 29 years, and the number of male and female victims were evenly split.

“When you are considering sending someone else a nude photo or video, ask yourself if you are comfortable letting go of your control over those images,” said Staff-Sgt. Lyndsay O’Ruairc, Special Victim’s Unit Commander, said on Tuesday. “Images can be easily distributed and made public, and while it’s illegal to distribute nude photos without consent, the consequences for the victim can be significant.” Surrey RCMP also continue to get reports from people who receive scam emails claiming their computer has been hacked. The person is told to send money or bitcoin under the threat of having nude or sexually explicit videos of them distributed. In these cases, there was no proof of photos or videos or other information being obtained from the victims’ computers. Surrey RCMP are making the following recommendations which can help protect you from being a target of extortion: * Be cautious in distributing nude photos and videos of yourself to anyone * Disable your webcam or any other camera connected to the internet when you aren’t using it. * Create complex, difficult to guess passwords for your devices and accounts and change the passwords frequently. [The VOICE’s advice: Just keep your clothes on!] If you or someone you know is a victim of an extortion, call and report the incident to Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. Surrey RCMP also recommend reporting extortion scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by going to their website or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

A shotgun and a handgun along with ammunition were seized by the Surrey RCMP COVID-19 Compliance and Enforcement Team (CCET) and the Community Response Unit after stopping a stolen vehicle, with the help of the RCMP helicopter, in Whalley. During the evening of August 8, Surrey RCMP officers were conducting patrols in the area of local businesses in Newton when they observed a vehicle with a stolen licence plate in a parking lot in the 13500-block of 72nd Avenue. The vehicle left the lot before a stop could be initiated. The RCMP Air One helicopter was deployed and quickly located the vehicle nearby. The vehicle was observed arriving at a residence in the 8700-block of 128th Street, where the lone male subsequently fled from the vehicle. A coordinated effort between the Air One crew and officers on the ground led to the man’s arrest. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a number of items, including a shot gun, a handgun, and ammunition. As a result of the investigation, 37-year-old Ryan Shewchuk has been charged with nine offences including dangerous driving and possession of a firearm and ammunition. “This vehicle stop highlights the importance of proactive patrols and vehicle stops,” said Cpl. Bob Keay of Surrey RCMP CCET on Monday. “Stolen licence plates are often used to commit further crimes. In this case, not only did we recover stolen plates, but we also seized two illegal firearms.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.

Police reminding Canucks fans to stay out of COVID-19 penalty box AS the Vancouver Canucks continue their quest for the Stanley Cup, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police Department are reminding fans to celebrate safely.

For several years Canuck fans have gathered to celebrate playoff wins at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Scott Road. In the interest of ensuring the celebrations remain safe, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police will be in attendance ensuring public safety, and managing traffic. Although police will be taking a measured approach, officers will be on hand enforcing the Criminal Code, and other provincial statutes including the liquor act. Officers will also be mindful of current COVID-19 public health orders, and will be monitoring the gathering for compliance. “While we understand people naturally want to celebrate Canuck victories, we encourage them to do so within their own homes, or at small gatherings,” says Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police. “We have been seeing growing crowds along the border between Surrey and Delta, and we want to let people know that we’re working with our partners at Surrey RCMP to ensure the area remains safe for pedestrians and motorists.” “Celebrations during previous play-off runs have been peaceful and, apart from traffic concerns, crowds have not caused significant issues,” says Staff-Sgt. Winston Shorey, Acting Community Services Officer. “This year, however, we are concerned about the risk of COVID-19 transmission among those who attend the gathering. We are asking everyone to ensure that they are complying with COVID-19 public health orders while celebrating.” For more information on current public health orders visit the B.C. Provincial Health website.

Vancouver Police now enforcing COVID-19 orders with support from City FOLLOWING the provincial announcement on Friday, the Vancouver Police Department will have the authority to enforce provincial health orders with specified penalties such as tickets, with support from the City. The new provincial measures provide increased enforcement powers for police and special constables across the Lower Mainland. The penalties, set by the Province, are $2,000 violation tickets for owners or organizers contravening the provincial health officer’s order on gatherings and events, and $200 violation tickets to individuals not following the direction of police or enforcement staff at events, or who refuse to comply with requests to follow health orders or safe operating procedures, or who respond with abusive behaviour. “Many members of the public, businesses and restaurants have been doing a great job helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep their community members safe,” said Jessie Adcock, General Manager of Development, Buildings and Licencing. “Enforcement, starting today, will be primarily focused on the much smaller group who aren’t.” The City has a staff enforcement team for private property, businesses, parks, and beaches, who will continue to provide education about compliance with provincial health orders. Starting today, these staff will now be involving the VPD when dealing with people or businesses who are persistent offenders. The VPD are now authorized by the Province to issue tickets and penalties. “The legislation permitting police enforcement is new and we’re working to ensure all police officers are trained in their new legal authorities,” says Constable Tania Visintin, Media Relations Officer, VPD. “We’re asking the public for their patience and for people to voluntarily adhere to the new orders.” If enforcement is escalated, the $2,000 fines set by the Province to owners, operators and organizers contravening provincial health orders will include: • hosting a private party or public event in excess of 50 people; • failing to provide appropriate hand sanitation and washroom facilities; • failing to provide sufficient space in the venue for physical distancing; • failing to obtain a list of names and contacts at large event; or • having more than five guests gathered in a vacation accommodation. $200 violation tickets for individuals will be for those who: • actively encourage others to attend gatherings or events that do not comply with health orders; • refuse to leave or disperse when directed to do so by enforcement officers; • refuse to comply with requirements for a restaurant, bar or other licensed establish-

Masks mandatory on transit beginning Monday TRANSLINK is reminding customers that its mandatory mask policy comes into effect on Monday, August 24, when customers will be required to wear non-medical masks or face coverings while on board transit vehicles. “I commend our employees for working hard to ensure customers are well

aware they are expected to wear masks on transit,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “I also want to thank our customers for their support and understanding of this policy change. Wearing a mask is a small gesture we can do to help make transit safer for everyone on board.” TransLink is using all avail-

able methods and channels to communicate this change to customers, including a robust marketing campaign, a social media push, announcements on board transit vehicles and the installation of over 8,000 pieces of signage in several languages across all stations and vehicles. Groups exempt from this

Although Transit Police will be able to enforce this rule requiring face coverings on transit, the initial focus of the policy will be on awareness and education. Widespread mask use is essential for ensuring customers have confidence riding transit as British Columbia’s economy continues to reopen and more people commute around the region. TransLink’s

policy is in line with other transportation providers in the province including BC Transit and BC Ferries. BC teachers call for smaller classes and stricter mask mandate THE BC Teachers’ Federation said on Wednesday that when the government first announced their K–12 restart plan on July 29, it expressed significant concerns that the plan needed more work. Since that time, the federation’s leadership and 25 classroom teachers have been working hard with the government’s steering com-

mittee and working groups to make the plan better. BCTF President Teri Mooring said some good steps, like adding time at the beginning of the school year for teachers and staff teams to prepare, have been taken. However, some of teachers’ biggest concerns have yet to be addressed. “BC teachers fully support

the ongoing efforts of all the education partner groups to get students back to learning as soon as possible,” said Mooring. “In an ideal situation, back to learning would mean all schools are safe for 100% of students, teachers, and support staff to return all at once. However, the sharp rise in active COVID-19 cases has many

people worried that the government has not done enough to ensure teachers, students, and their families are safe. “The government and the office of the Provincial Health Officer have done excellent work on enhancing contact tracing strategies, but our members are rightly concerned that not enough has been done on preventing the transmission of the virus in schools. BC should be pursuing a remote learning model that would allow for in-class and remote learning, especially for medically complex children. It’s important that this option maintains students’ connection to their local school. “Right across this province, new timetables are being developed that will see teachers and support staff in classrooms with up to 30 students or more without physical barriers, capacity limits, or face coverings that we have all grown accustomed to in other workplaces like the grocery store, dental office, or restaurant. Physical distancing is not possible in these classrooms. The situation will be particularly worrisome in BC’s largest and fastest growing districts that have hundreds of portables. Many BC schools also have outdated ventilation systems and thousands of students will be in classrooms without external windows. “All along, British Columbians have been told that physical distancing is the most effective and important measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and teachers are determined

Teri Mooring to do their part. However, the K–12 restart plan, even with the learning group concept, has made no change to classroom density. You can’t have a group of thirty 17-year-olds in a typical classroom for hours and maintain physical distancing for them or their teacher. It’s just not possible. BC needs to reduce classroom density and mandate mask use whenever appropriate physical distancing isn’t possible. That includes our workspaces like classrooms, labs, and libraries—not just common spaces like hallways. BC teachers are workers, just like any other profession in this province, and they need to be safe. “The government’s learning groups concept will work for contact tracing, but the plan doesn’t include adequate preventative measures within the learning groups. BC teachers, and the families they go home to, need more protection.” Here are the key health and safety concerns the BC Teachers’ Federation is asking the government to implement: •Classroom density reduced to allow for physical

distancing. •An option for remote learning, especially for medically complex children or those who have a medically compromised close family member, that allows the child to remain connected to their school with access to the full range of supports and services. •Dedicated funding for improvements to school ventilation and HVAC systems to ensure worksites meet or exceed COVID-19 requirements. •All adults and students 10 years and older be required to wear face masks when physical distancing is not possible, as long as there is not a medical condition that prevents usage. •Schools and worksites retrofitted with physical barriers for safety, where physical distancing is not possible. •Additional funding to ensure custodial cleaning of high touch surface areas are completed twice during the day, in addition to regular cleanings. •Accommodations for teachers who are immunocompromised or have chronic health conditions. “BC teachers want to get back into our classrooms and help give our students the best education possible,” said Mooring. “And, like every other worker in this province, we have a right to be safe. The government’s K–12 restart plan still needs more prevention measures to ensure teachers, students, and their families are as safe as they can be.”

B.C. Liberals: Yaletown small business tour shows impacts of NDP’s failed housing policy BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson, accompanied by MLAs Jane Thornthwaite and Sam Sullivan, toured several Yaletown small businesses on Tuesday that they said have faced the brunt of unintended consequences from Premier John Horgan and the NDP’s failed housing plan. “The NDP’s housing approach is failing our most vulnerable citizens and is devastating local Yaletown businesses and neighbourhoods. Their decision to convert former motels into shelters without any onsite clinical supports is wreaking havoc on the neighbourhood,” said Wilkinson on Wednesday. “Vulnerable people are simply being warehoused by this government without the help they desperately need and, in turn, the local area is seeing major spikes in crime, property damage, and threats to residents and employees.” BC Liberals say that since this government began warehousing vulnerable populations in hotels throughout the province without the necessary onsite supports, the conditions around these shelters have deteriorated and neighbouring communities and small businesses are being left to deal with the consequences. Local Yaletown small businesses like Roxyburger, Reckless Bikes, Domino’s Pizza, and Brunch Vancouver have all seen abrupt negative impacts to their operations with staff harassed, customers feeling unsafe, and regular occurrences of property damage, thefts, and threats. “Real supportive housing requires full wraparound supports in order to actually help people. By failing to provide the 24/7 onsite mental health,

We deserve so much more from this government.” Bryan D., owner of Domino’s Pizza, said: “There has been no communication from BC housing or the B.C. government. The move of the homeless encampment to the area my business is located has resulted in increased crime. We have had multiple thefts, break-ins, attempted robbery, and continuous harassment of our employees. We have had to install extra security cameras, a new door security system, and GPS systems for our electric delivery bikes as they continue to be stolen. Employees have chosen not to work at this location because they are not safe.” Jay Bomford, owner of Roxyburger, said: “What is happening now is not only scary and depressing but comes at a time when our businesses are struggling more than ever. “My day usually starts early when I arrive at work and begin cleaning the human feces that is left on our front door and back steps. I step over a plethora of used needles trying not to get them jabbed in my shoes as they often do. I try to talk nicely to the people using my parking space to shoot up that I need to park as I am working in the building. This is the way I begin every day. “My staff has a new policy that no one leaves alone as there have been several instances of violence or threats of violence towards them. Some again are questioning if they feel safe enough to work on this part of Granville since the new residents have moved in. I have spoken with many regulars that don’t feel safe coming to the street anymore as they are accosted and threatened. I have even had

Andrew Wilkinson addiction, and recovery supports that at-risk populations need, the NDP government is putting vulnerable citizens at risk and local small businesses in danger,” said Thornthwaite, BC Liberal Mental Health and Addictions Critic. “By simply warehousing human beings in places that aren’t equipped to provide them with the mental health and addictions supports they need to get well, the NDP are all but guaranteeing this situation will continue to spiral out of control and solve nothing.” Just hours after the owner of a Domino’s Pizza spoke with the Official Opposition, one of his delivery drivers was violently assaulted and had to receive medical attention. “These small businesses are being subjected to property crime and threats of violence, all while losing customers who no longer feel safe in the area. Despite the deteriorating situation, every single owner we spoke to was full of compassion and desperately wanted to see these people properly cared for,” said Sullivan, MLA for VancouverFalse Creek. “Everyone involved wants to see positive outcomes for those suffering from mental health and addictions here in Vancouver. So why isn’t the NDP doing their job and acting on behalf of British Columbians who want to see these people helped?

a few say that they are selling their places in the neighborhood because they no longer feel safe to enter and exit their homes that they have lived in for years. I feel for them and understand. “There will not be much left after all my staff and customers and the residents on nearby streets have been scared away.” Ian Turnbull, owner of Brunch Restaurant, said: “There is always someone shouting or fighting on the street. We’ve

only been open for a month and I’ve already seen things that I didn’t think would happen in Canada. Just last week someone shot an explosive at a passing police car. I’m concerned for my family who come to Brunch. My kids ride in on their scooters for a visit and see all of this. Our customers have to deal with it as well. Our staff has to work extra hard to try and erase the signs of these issues. I don’t even have the heart to ask them to clean up the

back alley and end up doing it myself, sometimes after a 12hour shift. “I feel like whoever made the decision to put these people downtown just wanted a quick fix and didn’t want to help the people who are suffering and certainly didn’t consider the consequences to those in the neighbourhood. Don’t get me wrong. I realize these people need help. I just don’t think putting them all together in our city’s core is the place where they will get it.”

Summer session focuses on protecting people, laying groundwork for recovery: Premier Horgan PROTECTING people from the effects of COVID-19 and laying the groundwork for a safe recovery and an even brighter future guided the government’s work in the legislative session that ended August 14, said Premier John Horgan. “The last few months have challenged our province in ways we could never have imagined,” said Horgan. “While so much has changed, our government’s fundamental approach has not. We remain focused

on making life better for everyone in British Columbia. Since the pandemic hit, that has meant an emphasis on keeping people safe and protecting their livelihoods.” B.C.’s legislature led the country in demonstrating how to have a safe and productive session, passing 20 pieces of legislation while maintaining social distancing. These included important measures to respond to the pandemic, provide services and supports for people, and make life more afford-

able. This summer, legislation was passed to overhaul ICBC with an enhanced care model that will save drivers 20% – an average of $400 per year – by eliminating legal costs from the system, while giving better benefits to those injured in car accidents. The landmark reforms will give British Columbians peace of mind that if they are injured in a crash, they will be looked after instead of being fought for years in court. “Before COVID-19, our government was making real progress to make life more affordable for people,” Horgan said. “But we know there’s much more to do. With so many British Columbians worried about their livelihoods, it’s more important than ever that we continue to bring down the cost of everyday expenses – like insurance bills.” For the first time in 20 years, the Province brought forward legislative changes to the Workers Compensation Act. The changes will provide better support to injured workers and their families and enhance WorkSafeBC’s ability to investigate workplace incidents, while keeping premiums low. To ensure more effective permitting, as well as better protection of workers, the environment and the public, the legislature also updated the Mines Act. The update strengthens government’s ability to hold mines accountable without sacrificing a strong investment climate. “The pandemic has reinforced that health and safety for workers must remain a top priority as we build our economic recovery,” Horgan said. “Throughout this crisis, workers in grocery stores and daycares, on trucks and farms, put themselves at risk to provide us essential services. They reminded us that when we talk about the economy, we are talking about people – people who are owed the best possible protection at work.” As part of the CleanBC plan, the Province put in place new rules for 100% electric-vehicle sales by 2040 to reduce air pollution and fight climate change. CleanBC is a pathway to a more prosperous, balanced and sustainable future. CleanBC was developed in collaboration with the BC Green Party caucus and Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon

John Horgan Head, and supports the commitment in the Confidence and Supply Agreement to implement climate action to meet B.C.’s emission targets. Outside of the legislature, the Province continued to invest in building critical infrastructure and improving the services British Columbians rely on. To help parents and families, the Province has announced hundreds of new child care spaces are coming to communities throughout British Columbia. A new urgent and primary care center opened in Maple Ridge this summer and another has been announced for Esquimalt. People living in Surrey and surrounding communities will soon have improved access to care with the addition of a regional cancer centre at the second Surrey hospital. An expanded plan for an emergency department and intensive care unit at Richmond Hospital will bring more services and better care for people. “Our recovery must mean more than returning to what we had before the pandemic struck,” Horgan said. “I know we can build a B.C that’s even better than before – one with strong public services, good-paying clean jobs and where we work in partnership with Indigenous peoples. I’m pleased that the last few weeks have begun to lay the groundwork for a recovery that works for everyone.”

WHY don’t we learn from history? Years ago, Australians began to use mixtures of powders containing Aspirin, codeine, phenacetin and caffeine to ease pain. By the 1970s, 25% of those dying of kidney disease had consumed too much of this powder. They also suffered hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis) and heart attack. Now, Dr. Richard Glassock, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, says that more than half of North Americans over 75 have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Kidneys, he says, need tender loving care (TLC) to avoid this avoidable common problem. One must never forget the wise counsel of Sir William Osler who remarked, “The one thing that separates man from animals is man’s desire to take pills.” North Americans are too quick to devour pills for every ache and pain. Think twice if you feel you need a painkiller for a headache or other minor pains. Time and nature cure many ills. Careless use of over-the-counter (OTC) non-steroidal drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) increase the risk of damaged kidneys. There’s another problem. Recent research found that those who regularly use protonpump inhibitors (PPIs) such as esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid) and omeprazole (Prilosec) are more than 28 times more likely to develop CKD than those who use histamine-2 receptor antagonists (Pepcid and Zantac). PPIs are designed for the short-term, not extended

use. Never forget another wise remark from Sir William Osler, that “alcohol is for the elderly what milk is for the young.” The key here is moderation. In other words, sip smart. According to the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, too much alcohol harms kidneys. In general, two drinks a day for men and one for women are OK. Should our diets be lighter on roast beef and mashed potatoes? The California reports says no, but it’s a prudent move to limit the intake of meat. Dr. Glassock claims that those who eat 1.7 ounces daily have a higher risk of severe kidney disease. He suggests that plant sources of protein, such as soybeans, can decrease the risk. Remember that kidneys are the master glands of our bodies. They control water balance, keep our blood neither too acid nor alkaline, and help to control blood pressure. They also have a filtering system that contains one million nephrons. If placed end to end, this system would stretch 70 miles. Kidneys filter every drop of blood in our body every three minutes. They need lots of TLC. Protect kidneys by maintaining a healthy weight. Remember extra weight puts added stress on kidneys and is a major cause of Type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis and hypertension. CKD is the price we pay for progress. Today more diagnostic invasive procedures require the use of catheters and injections of dyes. These procedures are done with great care, but hovering over them is always the risk of infection. And if infection occurs following by-pass coronary surgery or a hip operation, it may require long-term use of antibiotics. They too can injure kidneys. Don’t wait to get smart. CKD is a silent killer. Symptoms, which appear only after significant damage, may be feet and ankle swelling, nausea, weight loss, and short-

COVID-19: Night curfew back in all Punjab cities and towns amid other curbs

Anti-Sikh riotS:

Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala & Mohali districts account for 80% of active cases

Court directs police to continue providing security to witness

Chandigarh (IANS): Calling for “war-like preparedness” to deal with the massive COVID-19 spike, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday ordered a series of emergency measures, including extension of weekend lockdown with daily night curfew from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in all the 167 cities and towns from Friday. He also ordered a total ban on all gatherings, except weddings and funerals, across the state till August 31. Government and private offices will work at 50 per cent capacity till the end of this month, as per the directives issued by the Chief Minister during a virtual meeting with top officials on Thursday to review the COVID-19 situation in the state, which is witnessing a massive increase in daily cases and an increase in deaths. He also directed the officials concerned to restrict public visitors in government offices and to encourage the use of online grievance redressal system, which has been significantly strengthened by the state government to minimise in-person contact. In the five worst-affected districts of Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Mohali, restrictions on vehicular capacity have been imposed

New Delhi (IANS): A Delhi court on Tuesday directed the city police to continue providing security to arms dealer Abhishek Verma, a witness in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, for a month and to also reassess the threat perception to him as well as senior advocate H.S. Phoolka. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjyot Singh Bhalla issued the directions to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) while hearing a case against former Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. It pertains to the alleged killing of three Sikhs at Delhi’s Gurdwara Pulbangash in 1984, a day after the assassination of thenPrime Minister Indira Gandhi. In an application, Verma, a witness in the case, told the court that the security cover provided to him was suddenly withdrawn by the police “without any prior notice or without re-evaluating the threat perception”. Phoolka is representing the complainant in the case. He sought a direction for reinstatement of round-the-clock police security cover and reevaluation of threat perception to him and his family members. The application further stated that he is constantly receiving death threats via calls and e-mails to pressure him not to depose against Tytler. He said that sudden withdrawal of security has left his family members extremely “disturbed and distressed due to the fear”.

Amarinder Singh again, with buses and other public transport to operate with 50 per cent capacity and private four-wheelers not allowed to carry more than three passengers per vehicle. The Chief Minister has also directed the Deputy Commissioners in these five districts to allow only 50 per cent of the non-essential shops to open on a daily basis to check crowding. These five districts currently account for 80 per cent of the active case load in the state. The Chief Minister directed Director General of Police Dinkar Gupta to strictly enforce compliance of rules with regard to the number of persons allowed to attend weddings and funerals, and also to ensure total ban on political gatherings till August 31, when the situation will be

reviewed. He also asked the DGP to crack the whip on all political protests and gatherings, and asked his own Congress’ leadership to enforce the ban strictly. “Enough is enough,” said Amarinder Singh, adding that “we need to be tough without affecting the state’s economic activity”. Citing the 920 COVID-19 deaths reported in the state so far, he said “each death pains me, and the projections for the coming weeks are grim”. Underlining the need to promote public participation in creating awareness on the measures to check the spread of COVID-19, he asked the Health Department to involve all other departments, NGOs and local politicians to educate the people.

Farooq Abdullah meets senior National Conference leaders Srinagar (IANS): National Conference President Farooq Abdullah held a meeting with senior party colleagues at his home in Srinagar on Thursday. The meeting was convened days after the government told the court that the leaders are free and not under detention. Among those present in the meeting included National

Farooq Abdullah (far right) meets senior party colleagues.

Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, provincial president Kashmir Nasir Aslam Wani, former minister Abdul Rahim Rather, senior leader Mohd Shafi Uri and National Conference MPs Hasnain Masoodi and Akbar Lone. “Today our meeting was merely to see whether our colleagues can come out of their homes as claimed by the

government,” Farooq said. He did not talk about the political strategy of his party after the abrogation of Article 370 and said that it would be decided after due deliberations with the party leadership. “The future political strategy can be revealed only after all the detained leaders are released,” he said. He said an all-party meeting

which could not be organised earlier would be held in the future. He said the National Conference stands with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and wants her and every other leader to move freely without any problems. “We want her to be free,” he said. “I am in constant touch with her; she is a signatory to the Gupkar declaration.”

Ex-Bangladesh Army chief behind murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman: Killer’s confession Fugitive Noor Chowdhury is in Canada Dhaka (IANS): In a confession before he was hanged to death in April for the killing of ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, dismissed military officer Abdul Majed said that former Bangladesh Army chief Ziaur Rahman was behind the 1975 assassination. Bangladesh on Saturday mourned the death of Rahman, who was assassinated on August 15, 1975, along with his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, and 12 other family members in one of the worst political massacres 45 years ago. In the confession, Majed said that the day after the murder, Ziaur Rahman addressed all

Abdul Majed the jawans and officers of Dhaka Cantonment. “He motivated everyone not to worry about what happened and asked them to return to the chain of command. ‘It’s a matter of the nation, it’s not a matter of us’,” Majed quoted

Rahman as saying. Majed further said that those involved in the assassination were given shelter at Bangabhaban on the day of the massacre. They were staying in the VIP suite next to President Khandaker Mushtaq, where Ziaur Rahman used to go there and meet them. He later awarded the renegade officers. Zia posted the killers in Foreign Service and promoted each one of them as a reward. In his confession, which described the beginning and end of the murder, Majed mentioned that he was also with the killers as a relatively

junior officer. He said that Noor Chowdhury shot Bangabandhu, while Risaldar Mosleh Uddin shot and killed the other members of the family. Majed also claimed that those who were given jobs in the Foreign Service did not have the same qualifications, adding that they were given a promotion and awarded to foreign posting because of his (Ziaur Rahman) direct patronage. However, those officers were not qualified for foreign service, not even graduates. Most of them were short-term commissioned officers. Majed had repeatedly tried

to hide his involvement. After serving as the Ambassador of Senegal, he was brought back to the country in 1980 as per his wish and was promoted to the post of Deputy Secretary in Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC). Majed, who was hanged to death on April 12, was arrested in Dhaka on April 7 some 24 years after trial began against him and his fellow army officers for the massacre. The authorities executed five of the 12 military personnel sentenced to death for the murder. Their execution took place on January 27, 2010, a year after Bangabandhu’s

eldest daughter, incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to power for her second term. One of the accused, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe in 2001, while six others declared fugitives faced conviction in absentia. Of the fugitives, the government knows the whereabouts of Noor Chowdhury, who is in Canada, and Rashed Chowdhury, in the US. While the locations of Col (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan were yet to be determined.

Fake appointment racket busted in Delhi, 5 held New Delhi (IANS): Five persons have been arrested on the charge of duping hundreds of unemployed youths on the pretext of providing them jobs in the Airport Authority of India (AAI) at the IGI Airport here, a senior Delhi Police officer said on Tuesday. The accused were identified as Sumit Upadhay, Sajid Ali, Shahzad, Pawan, and Sanjay. As many as 18 mobile phones, laptops, 10 SIM cards and some stamps were seized from them.

Explaining their modus operandi, police said the gang members posted advertisements on Facebook to ask for applications for jobs in the AAI and even sent out fake appointment letters to the candidates. They asked for money to be deposited in different bank accounts on various pretexts. They also ran a call centre from a rented premise at Khora Colony in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, where they received a huge number of calls from job aspirants. Calls

were initially received by telecallers just to give an impression of genuineness to the callers. The telecallers, after assuring the victims about direct AAI jobs, asked them to deposit Rs 1,050 each as registration charges in bank accounts. After a day or two, the accused used to send forged appointment letters of AAI through speed post and asked their victims to deposit Rs 25,550 more for the job

agreements. Subsequently, they would send forged insurance documents and ask the victims to further deposit one-time premium of Rs 20,500 for an insurance of Rs 4 million during the job tenure. “The accused kept on asking their victims for more and more money until the later got the idea of the whole racket and stopped communicating with them,” said IGI Airport Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajeev Ranjan.

Cancer cases in India to rise by 12% by 2025, says government report Cancers related to use of any form of tobacco were highest in northeast India

New Delhi (IANS): There will be a 12-percent increase in cancer cases across the country in five years as per the National Cancer Registry Programme Report 2020, released by the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research on Tuesday. According to the report, India will have 1.39 million cancer cases in 2020, which

will increase to 1.57 million by 2025, based on current trends. These estimates are based on information related to cancer collected from 28 population-based Cancer Registries and 58 hospitalbased Cancer Registries. These results then facilitate efforts to strengthen cancer prevention and control throughout the country. In 2020, tobacco-related

cancers are estimated to contribute 370,000 (27.1 per cent) of the total cancer burden. Among women, breast cancers are estimated to contribute 200,000 (14.8 per cent) and cervix cancer are estimated to contribute 75,000 (5.4 per cent), whereas for both men and women, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract is estimated to contribute 270,000 (19.7 per cent) of the total cancer

cases. Cancers related to use of any form of tobacco were highest in the northeastern region of the country and in higher proportion in men. While cancer of lung, mouth, stomach and oesophagus were the most common among men, cancer of breast and cervix uteri were the most common among women. A significant increase in the

incidence rates of breast cancers in women, and lung and head and neck cancers in both men and women was observed in most of the registries, but a declining trend was seen in most of the registries for cancer of the cervix. Lung cancer was diagnosed at a stage of spread to distant sites, while cancers of head and neck, stomach, breast and cervix were in higher

proportions with locoregional spread. Multimodality treatment, a varied combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, was administered for cancers of breast and head and neck, while cancer cervix was treated mainly with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For cancers of the lung and the stomach, systemic therapy was the mode of treatment.

Supreme Court went way beyond what people were expecting: Bhandari New Delhi (IANS): Ishkaran Singh Bhandari, whom BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy appointed to initiate a CBI probe into the Sushant Singh Rajput case, says Supreme Court ordering a courtmonitored CBI probe is a step way ahead of expectations. “It is a huge victory for the people of India. Our constitution starts with, ‘We the people’ and the people united in this case,”

Sushant Singh Rajput Bhandari told IANS after the judgement. “I said on July 1 that this case

must have a CBI investigation. I could see that Mumbai police was completely botching up the case. That has been vindicated now by the Supreme Court’s judgment where they have transferred this case to CBI,” he added. Bhandari, a lawyer and political analyst, continued: “One very important point that has not been covered yet -- but I think when people will read

the judgment they will understand -- is in paragraph 41, where the Supreme Court has said cases connected to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput will also go to CBI. That means anything connected to it. If the CBI finds Disha Salian’s death is connected or something else is connected or destruction of evidence is connected to the case, then that will also be with CBI. So the court has

gone way beyond what most people were expecting and has done substantial and complete justice,” he added. On June 14, Sushant was found hanging in his residence in Mumbai. The post-mortem report stated that the actor had committed suicide. The late actor’s father KK Singh filed an FIR in Bihar accusing six people including Sushant’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, for

abetment to suicide among other charges. Bhandari continued: “It is a huge step (towards justice). When we started to ask for a CBI probe in July, there was not even a criminal case. Mumbai police was not doing a criminal investigation. There was no FIR. CBI investigates crimes. This is a crime now with criminal investigation into it,” he added.

Manmohan Singh wanted to step down, make Rahul prime minister: Congress leader New Delhi (IANS): Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil on Wednesday claimed that during UPA-II, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had offered Rahul Gandhi his place as he wanted to step down due to health issues. However, Rahul Gandhi turned down the proposal and requested Manmohan Singh to complete his term, he said at a press conference in response to a question on party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s expressed willingness to work under non-Gan-

Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi. the Gandhi family... they don’t dhi Congress chief. “This is the graciousness of hanker after power. Sonia

Gandhi refused to become Prime Minister in 1991 and then in 2004 and Rahul Gandhi declined the offer during UPA-II,” Gohil said. Asked when Manmohan Singh made the offer, he responded that it was widely reported in the media. The Congress leader’s comment came in the wake of a claim made in book “India Tomorrow: Conversations with the Next Generation of Political Leaders” by Pradeep Chibber and Harsh Shah. The book says Priyanka Gan-

dhi was ready to work under a non-Gandhi President after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation following the party’s rout in the 2019 general elections. “If there were to be another party President, he would be my boss. If he tells me tomorrow that he doesn’t want me in Uttar Pradesh but wants me to be in Andaman and Nicobar (Islands), then I would jolly well go to Andaman and Nicobar,” she had said, as per the book. Rahul Gandhi had also said that the party should elect a

President from outside the Gandhi family, but in August last year, Sonia Gandhi was appointed as the interim President of the Congress. However, the Congress downplayed Priyanka Gandhi’s purported remarks, and charged the BJP with stoking the issue. “We, at INC India, appreciate the sudden media interest (egged on by BJP) in a year old remark (dated July 1, 2019) of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra,” party’s chief spokesperson, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said in a statement.

Punjab Chief Minister bats for tribunal to assess water availability Chandigarh (IANS): Urging the Central government to be cautious on the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) issue, which has the potential to disturb the nation’s security, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday reiterated the need for a tribunal to make a fresh timebound assessment of the water availability, even as he

sought complete share of water for his state from the total resource available, including from the Yamuna river. “You have to look at the issue from the national security perspective. If you decide to go ahead with the SYL, Punjab will burn and it will become a national problem, with Haryana and Rajasthan also suffering the impact,” Ama-

rinder Singh told the Centre, during a video conference with Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The Chief Minister later described the meeting as ‘positive and cordial’ and said the Union Minister seemed to understand Punjab’s viewpoint. Punjab remains at risk from all ends, said Amarinder Singh, pointing to Pakistan’s

Amarinder Singh certain the status. Noting that there had, in fact, been no adjudication or scientific assessment of available Punjab river waters till date, the Chief Minister said the BBMB had reported that availability of Ravi-Beas water had come down from the estimated 17.17 MAF in 1981 to 13.38 MAF in 2013. Despite being a non-basin state and having a smaller population as well as lesser cultivated land area, Haryana’s total availability of river water stood at 12.48 MAF as against Punjab’s 12.42 MAF, he noted. He pointed out that trans-basin transfer of water can only be allowed from a surplus basis to a deficit basis, and, as of today, Punjab is a deficit state and could not, therefore, be asked to transfer water to Haryana. Amarinder Singh said that he had taken a concerted decision to terminate all water agreements back in 2004 to save Punjab from burning, amid reports that violence could erupt in the state in

protest. The situation had aggravated since then, he said, adding that 109 of the state’s 128 blocks had officially been declared ‘dark zones’. Pointing to the melting glaciers, he urged the Central government to take the climate change effects into account. The situation was likely to worsen with China constructing dams in their territory, warned Amarinder Singh, adding that this would lead to water shortage even in the Satluj river. “Why would I not agree to give water if we had it,” he said, adding that certain areas of south Haryana were in fact part of the erstwhile Patiala estate and he personally had special love for the region. The Chief Minister recalled that he had suggested construction of water storage dams in Himachal Pradesh for collecting water so that the flow of water into Pakistan could be checked. He urged the Union Minister to consider the suggestion. The Union Minister was of the view that carriers could be constructed and the SYL could also be completed and kept ready while discussions on water sharing continue and the final formula could be decided later.

continued attempts to foment trouble and to try and revive the separatist movement through the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) organisation. The water issue could further destabilise the state, he warned. Punjab had a right to Yamuna water, in which it did not get a share at the time of the 60:40 division of assets with Haryana during the state’s division in 1966, the Chief Minister said, even as he expressed his willingness to sit across the table with his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the ‘emotive’ issue. He also suggested that Rajasthan be involved in the discussions on the SYL canal and the Ravi-Beas waters issue as it was also a stakeholder. It was decided during the meeting that the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana will meet in Chandigarh, on a date to be fixed later, for further talks on the issue, and will then approach the Union Minister again. Putting forth Punjab’s stand during the meeting, Amarinder Singh said that it was necessary to set up a tribunal for fair adjudication of the water availability, and pointed out that the water sharing proposed by the Eradi Commission was 40 years old, while international norms require a review every 25 years to as-

Punjab Revenue Minister tests COVID-19 positive Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Revenue Minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar on Sunday tested positive for the novel coronavirus, doctors said. He had hoisted the national flag on Independence Day

and in Mansa town a day earlier. The Minister complained of a sore throat, after which he was tested for coronavirus. Kangar told the media over the phone that his condition

is stable and is undergoing treatment at his residence. Earlier, two Congress legislators and Cabinet Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa had tested positive for the virus.

Chandigarh (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday warned Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh against “compromising on the state’s consistent and principled stand on the riparian principle with regard to the unsustainable demand for distribution of river waters”. The Akali leader said the SYL canal issue stood closed forever after the Parkash Singh Badal-led government had returned the acquired land to its

No compromise on Punjab’s water: Sukhbir Badal

Sukhbir Badal original owner farmers. The SAD President said the Chief Minister should have categorically told Union Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat that

massive injustice had been done to Punjab by successive Congress governments, especially by Indira Gandhi, in looting Punjab’s waters and giving these unjustly to Rajasthan and Haryana. “Congress Chief Minister Darbara Singh had signed on Punjab’s death warrants. When told by Indira Gandhi to choose between his chair as CM and Punjab’s rights on river waters, Darbara Singh chose his chair,” an official statement quoting Sukhbir

Badal said. “Punjabis are now paying with their lives the price for the greed of the Congress leaders like Darbara Singh.” The Akali leader said building a canal without determining the quantum of water, if any, to flow through it is a ‘patently absurd idea’. “Never in human history has a canal ever been built without first ascertaining the availability of the water. That is literally putting the cart before the horse and the people of

Punjab are totally at a loss to understand why such an absolutely irrational and unprecedented demand was being made at all.” Former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir reiterated that Punjabis and the Akali Dal would never accept the construction of the SYL nor allow it to be built. He said Amarinder Singh’s arguments in Tuesday’s meeting with the Haryana counterparts have surprised the Punjabis as these constitute

a departure from the known and consistent position on riparian principle. “Punjab’s claim on river waters is based on the nationally and internationally accepted riparian principle. The issue of Yamuna waters is only an argument against Haryana’s stand. We just want that we must not be robbed of our own river waters and we don’t demand Yamuna waters because we stick to the riparian principle,” Sukhbir added.

Calling assembly session constitutional requirement: Punjab Chief Minister the people was not by his government but by SAD President Sukhbir Badal, whose pathetic record of attendance in Assembly as MLA showed how little importance he gave to the House and its sessions, said the Chief Minister in a statement. From March 2017 to May 2019, when he was MLA, Badal attended the House for only 16 of the 40 days in session, he pointed out. Amarinder Singh expressed

shock at the reaction of Badal and AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema, terming it not just ludicrous but a manifestation of the total lack of sensitivity and concern on the part of the two opposition parties in the state. Both the parties seemed bent on playing with the sentiments of the people, whose only concern at present was to protect themselves from the COVID-19, which was peaking in the state and could play havoc with the

Punjab Assembly’s one-day session on August 28 Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab Vidhan Sabha will convene on August 28 for a one-day session, the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the country. The go-ahead for the session came on Monday during a video conference meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

The Cabinet pointed out the constitutional requirement to hold a session within six months of the previous one and decided on a day-long session with two sittings. A regular session would be held later when the COVID-19 situation improves. With the Cabinet decision, the Punjab Governor has been authorised to convene the 12th session of the 15th

state before stabilising, said the Chief Minister. Responding to Badal’s remark that the single-day session was evidence of the government’s acknowledgement that it has lost the mandate to govern, Amarinder Singh said his government had the mandate of the people and did not need the support of the handful of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLAs in the Assembly.

The only pressure on the government in calling the one-day session was Constitutional, the Chief Minister noted, urging Badal to go and read up the Constitution, whose principles and rules the Akalis had stopped upholding a long time ago. With 34,400 people in the state having tested positive so far and 898 deaths, including 1,704 reported positive and 35 dead on a single

day on August 18, the situation was grim, the Chief Minister noted, adding that 366 people were on oxygen and three critically ill on ventilators. The Chief Minister said neither the Shiromani Akali Dal nor the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had any meaningful issue to project among the people, and were thus resorting to shameful antics in the midst of the pandemic.

Chandigarh (IANS): Hitting out at the opposition for continuing to play dirty politics at a time when Punjab was going through a critical period amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said the one-day Assembly session convened by his government was a Constitutional requirement, as clearly mentioned in the official announcement two days back. 2020 Mercedes Benz GLS450: Magnificent! Auto Review by Veeno Dewan The Mercedes-Benz GLS450 sits at the very top of the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup. Imposing, dramatic and looking every inch the Teutonic, expensive, luxurious seven - seater it is. The GLS450 is all that and more. The 2020 model year brings in a re-engineered platform, new engine power and more updated technology on the inside. In terms of exterior styling, our dark Canvasite Blue GLS 450 tester looked stunning with a twin-bar grille, big wheels and subtle touches of chrome that set off the nice planted stance. The GLS 450 is powered by 3.0-liter turbocharged straight six engine equipped with the latest 48-volt mild hybrid system, known as EQ Boost that adds a 21-hp/184-lb.ft. Electric motor. Power is rated at 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is via Mercedes 4MATIC ninespeed automatic gearbox with All Wheel Drive. The GLS 450 ain’t cheap! Pricing starts at a$93,500 base. Standard features include PRESAFE, Blind Spot Assist, MBUX user inter-

face, surround camera system, Intelligent LED headlights with Highbeam assist, power sunroof, remote start, KEYLESSGO, heated front seats, Active Parking Assist, wireless charging, SiriusXM radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 9 USB ports and a 12.3 media touchscreen. On our tester, options, such as: a $5,100 Premium Package, $2,400 Sport Package,$3,000 Intelligent Drive package and a few other options raised the price to $106,690 plus freight pdi and taxes. Inside the GLS450 you are greeted by massive interior with space for seven adults and all their cargo. The sumptuous cabin is layered in fine materials, it is a Mercedes after all, so high quality materials and incredible fit and finish is standard. Butter soft leather with contrast stitching covers the seats, dash and door panels, thoughtful chrome and brushed metal and the wonderful perforated aluminum Burmester audio speaker grilles adorn the doors. However, the jet engine turbine air vents found in other Mercedes

Benz are replaced by rectangular chrome units. The fully digital dash is also a work of art with its pin sharp graphics and super bright dials. Technology is high. For me, the most impressive feature is Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system – a voice activated system that can carry out a wide range of functions. Using a simple “Hey Mercedes” command, you can change radio channels, alter cabin temperature ask for the weather forecast, the nearest restaurant or fuel stop. The MBUX operates seamlessly. Other highlights include an infotainment screen is that can be accessed one of three ways: via touch, a centralized control pad or thumb controls on the

steering wheel. In terms of comfort the front seats are infinitely adjustable and also come with an available massaging feature that is just superb. The middle row seats also feature heating, and ventilation, as well as independent HVAC controls. The GLS’ third-row seating is a little cramped and hard to access by adults, but you do get cupholders and USB ports back there. Electrically folding rear seats allows for 2,400 litres of cargo. On the road; the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 offers a fine driving experience with the mild hybrid system allowing for smooth acceleration. The transition to gasoline engine being seamless. Don’t ex-

pect dramatic acceleration as the 3.0 liter engine has a considerable amount of weight to pull, but with 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. it offers a steady, amount of thrust once it’s up to speed and the nine- speed automatic gearbox does it job. While big and heavy, body roll is well controlled on the corners. The GLS also offers a couple of drive modes for different conditions that work by altering things like shift parameters, suspension settings and traction control system. Comfort mode offers a mix of smooth suspension setting, while Sport mode tightens up things for more control. There is an Eco mode for more fuel efficiency while Off-road mode raises the suspension for rougher terrain. Generally, the GLS450 offers a smooth ride even over the most potholed of road surfaces with its pliable suspension. And responsive steering. The GLS450 offers great visibility, a high driving position and is

a very comfortable SUV to drive with a satisfying feel of solidity and stability. It’s an excellent vehicle car for long distance touring. The new GLS can tow a large bat trailer with its maximum towing ratings ranging between 7,716 lb (3,500 kg) when properly equipped. Fuel economy is rated at: 11.2 combined /12.3 city /10.2l/100 km highway. Not much too complain about, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is a magnificent beast with its vault like feeling of safety, a luxurious interior and feature rich specification. The price is of course a drawback for us mere mortals, but we can always dream! 2020 Mercedes Benz GKS450 priced from $93,500 ($108.690 as tested) Website: Mercedes-Benzes

2020 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe. Small, but Deadly!

Autoreview by Veeno Dewan Drum roll please! Welcome to the newest member of BMW’s 2 Series lineup, the Gran Coupé, a compact 4 door sedan that represents the entry point to the BMW lineup. The Gran Coupé, is the smallest and least expensive sedan from the famed Bavarian auto maker and is features some DNA with the BMW X1 and X2 crossovers,

as well as the larger Mini models, all of which share BMWs’ UKL2 platform. Designed to attract a younger audience, the 228i xDrive Gran Coupé, we tested had some key BMW elements — helped by a vibrant red paint job and gloss black kidney grilles while the optional 19-inch M double spoke wheels filled the wheel arches very nicely. In addition the M Sport equipment treatment fitted to my 228i test car added the optional M aerodynamic aggressive body kit, the aforementioned big 19 inch M wheels and large M Sport brakes. It’s a stubby, aggressive care, in some ways very BMW with a new version of the twin-kidney grille and ringed quad-lamp headlights, but the cool rear light and

fascia treatment with its black bar motif are new elements. The 228i BMW Gran Coupé, is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder version of BMW’s B modular engine delivering 228 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,450 rpm. Power is transferred to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW says the Gran Coupé can accelerate from 0t to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h or 240 km/h when equipped with higher – performance tires. The BMW 228i Gran Coupé, has a starting MSRP of $42,500. Must have options, however, quickly

increase the price – case in point, our tester with its options stickered at $53,395 plus taxes, and destination. BMW have ensured the interior has not been compromised by price. Despite the Gran Coupés entry level status – the sedans cabin errs more to sporty functionality. Front-seat passengers get plenty of space, and the perforated Dakota leather sport seats provide generous support, and are very comfortable. I just loved the optional super bright 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster Nice to see the slick digital gauge display, touchscreen infotainment system that found on upper level BMW models. The 228i infotainment CONTINUED ON 43

Joe Biden’s agenda for the Indian American community PRESUMPTIVE Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden posted the following on his website – “Joe Biden’s Agenda for the Indian American Community” – to show his strong support for Indian Americans and India (for the full text, visit our website voiceonline.com): As Senator, as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and as Vice President, Joe Biden has supported Indian Americans and a strong friendship between India and the United States. Diverse and vibrant communities of Indian Americans enrich the fabric of our nation in every state of the union. Biden will ensure that South Asian Americans are represented in his administration, starting with his Vice Presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris, whose mother emigrated from India to study and build a life in the United States. Our government will reflect the diversity of the United States, and Indian American voices will be included in shaping the policies that impact their communities. Stem the Rising Tide of Hate and Bigotry Since Donald Trump took office, the number of hate crimes that take place across our country

has greatly increased, according to the FBI’s hate crime statistics. We have a President who, in clear language and in code, encourages and emboldens prejudice and hatred — and that’s dangerous. Indian Americans of all backgrounds — Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Jain, and others — have been subjected to bullying and xenophobic attacks and need now, more than ever, a reassurance that our leaders in Washington will have their backs. During the Obama-Biden Administration, the FBI expanded its hate crime statistics program to include Sikhs, Hindus, and Buddhists. As President, Biden will directly address the rise in hateful attacks and enact legislation prohibiting someone convicted of a hate crime from purchasing or possessing a firearm. Biden will appoint leaders at the Department of Justice who will prioritize the prosecution of hate crimes, and he will order his Justice Department to focus additional resources to combat hate crimes — including religion-based hate crimes — and to confront white nationalist terrorism. He will also seek legislation that increases the potential sentence for certain hate crimes that occur in houses of worship and other religious community sites, such as gurudwaras, mandirs, temples, and mosques. And, he will use his executive power to ensure that the De-

partment of Justice pursues such heinous acts of violence against houses of worship to the fullest extent of the law. Address the Security Needs of Houses of Worship

In 2012, the Sikh community suffered a terrible tragedy when a white supremacist opened fire in an Oak Creek, Wisconsin, gurdwara, ultimately killing seven and wounding four. In January 2019, a Hindu mandir was the victim of a horrific act of vandalism and destruction, with windows shattered and xenophobic messages spray-painted across the walls. A murti (sacred image) was defaced and a knife was stabbed into a chair. Biden understands that mandirs, mosques, gurudwaras, and temples are sacred spaces and that acts of vandalism and destruction gnaw at a community’s sense of belonging and undermine its ability to freely and safely worship. America was built on a foundation of religious freedom and, as President, Biden will redouble our efforts to end hate-filled acts of violence and intimidation and help us to reach our highest values. He will also ensure that places of worship have access to robust and direct security support from the federal government. We cannot leave our faith-based organizations to

Joe Biden and Kamal Harris. rely on donations and internal fundraising efforts to guard against deadly attacks. Biden will work with Congress to attain an immediate and substantial increase in direct security grant funding to faith-based organizations through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). Secure our Values as a Nation of Immigrants Biden will rescind Trump’s “Muslim ban” on day one and reverse the detrimental asylum policies that are causing chaos and a humanitarian crisis at our border. He will immediately begin working with Congress to pass legislative immigration reform that modernizes our system, with a priority on keeping families together by providing a roadmap to citizenship for nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants — including more than 500,000 from India. Biden will support family-based immigration and preserve family unification as a core principle of our immigration system, which includes reducing the family visa backlog. He will increase the number of visas offered for permanent, work-based immigration based on macroeconomic conditions and exempt from any cap recent graduates of PhD programs in STEM fields. And, he will support first reforming the temporary visa system for high-skill, specialty jobs to protect wages and workers, then expanding the number of visas offered and eliminating the limits on employment-based green cards by country, which have kept so many Indian families in waiting for too long. Biden will restore and defend the naturalization process for green card holders. And, he will increase the number of refugees we welcome into this country by setting the annual global refugee admissions target to 125,000 and seek to raise it over time commensurate with our responsibility, our values, and the unprecedented global need. He will also work with Congress to establish a minimum admissions number of 95,000 refugees annually. Biden will remove the uncertainty for Dreamers by reinstating the DACA program and explore all legal options to protect their families from inhumane separation. And, he will end workplace raids and protect other sensitive locations from immigration enforcement actions. No one should be afraid to seek medical attention, or go to school, their job, or their place of worship for fear of an immigration enforcement action. Streamline Processing for Religious Worker Visas

Many Indian Americans belong to faith communities that rely on the counsel, support, and wisdom of scholars and religious specialists, who may be foreign nationals traveling to the United States on a temporary religious worker (R-1) visa. For many Indian American organizations, the submission and review process for religious worker visas requires substantial administrative and financial resources. Moreover, processing times can result in travel delays, which adversely impact these communities across the country. Biden will direct the State Department and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to identify methods and programs for streamlining the review of religious worker visas submitted by any faith-based organizations with a reliable track record of faithfully utilizing the religious worker visa program. Honor the Diversity and Contributions of Indian Americans

Support the U.S.-India Partnership Biden played a lead role, both as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as Vice President, in systematically deepening our strategic engagement, people-to-people ties, and collaboration with India on global challenges. In 2006, Biden announced his vision for the future of U.S.-India relations: “My dream is that in 2020, the two closest nations in the world will be India and the United States.” He has also worked to make that vision a reality, including leading the charge in Congress, working with Democrats and Republicans, to approve the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement in 2008. The Obama-Biden Administration continued to deepen collaboration between India and the United States on strategic, defense, economic, regional, and global challenges. Biden was a major

However for the Luddites amongst us, easy to use buttons remain in place for commonly used features. Our tester came with a host of options including the $8,750 Premium Excellence package with option too long to list, but included such things as: Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters, M Sport steering and suspension and M Sport package —active cruise control with stop and go, parking assist, a head-up display, and a Harman/Kardon surround-sound audio system, The M Sport plus package ($1,000) added the19 inch wheels and performance tires, and M sport brakes. The rear cabin is a little cramped and comfort will depend on just how far back the front driver and occupant decide to push their seat back! The rear trunk features 12 cubic foot of cargo space and can be enlarged by folding down the 40/20/40-split rear seat backrest. The trunk can also be opened via a wave of a foot under the bumper. champion of growing and expanding the U.S.-India partnership. Recognizing India’s growing role on the world stage, the Obama-Biden Administration formally declared U.S. support for India’s membership in a reformed and expanded United Nations Security Council. The Obama-Biden Administration also named India a “Major Defense Partner” – a status approved by the Congress – to ensure that when it comes to the advanced and sensitive technology that India needs to strengthen its military, India is treated on par with our closest partners. President Obama and Vice President Biden also strengthened our cooperation with India to fight terrorism in each of our countries and across the region. Biden believes there can be no tolerance for terrorism in South Asia – cross-border or otherwise. A Biden Administration will also work with India to support a rules-based and stable Indo-Pacific region in which no country, including China, is able to threaten its neighbors with impunity. Biden will deliver on his long-standing belief that India and the United States are natural partners, and a Biden Administration will place a high priority on continuing to strengthen the U.S.-India relationship. No common global challenge can be solved without India and the United States working as responsible partners. Together, we will

continue strengthening India’s defense and capabilities as a counter-terrorism partner, improving health systems and pandemic response, and deepening cooperation in areas such as higher education, space exploration, and humanitarian relief. As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, the

The Obama-Biden Administration respected and celebrated America’s diversity as an essential strength, including hosting the first White House event to honor the military service of Indian Americans and celebrations of Diwali at the White House, the Vice President’s residence at the Naval Observatory, and at the Pentagon. A Biden Administration will once more recognize and honor important cultural celebrations of American faith and heritage communities. The Obama-Biden Administration also made history by changing U.S. Army policy to allow observant Sikhs, as well as Muslim women, to wear religious head coverings while in uniform, so that our brave soldiers could both honor their faith and serve their country. Biden will seek to ensure reasonable religious accommodations across all our armed services. And, he will nominate and appoint federal officials and judges who look like America, including from the Indian American community. Biden will bring key stakeholders to the table to ensure that the communities of those impacted by policies are an essential part of the decision-making process.
