Punjabi diaspora worried, shocked over brutality against farmers

Some photos of state violence against peaceful farmers tweeted by Canadian lawmakers. Chandigarh (IANS): The planned protest against new farm laws and the ‘brutality’ of the security forces by lobbing teargas shells and using water cannons to stop the peaceful march of the farmers towards the national capital has left the diaspora largely from Canada worried and shocked. They asked the Indian government

to engage in an open dialogue with the farmers as their livelihoods are going to be impacted. Expressing solidarity with the farmers, Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the reports of peaceful protesters being brutalized were very troubling. Sajjan tweeted: “The reports of peaceful protesters being brutalized

deplorable,” she said in a tweet. Joining the cause, Chandigarhborn Rachna Singh, Parliament Secretary of British Columbia, said she was really saddened by the way Punjab farmers are being treated. “This is unacceptable.” Describing the violence perpetrated by the Indian government against farmers peacefully protesting is appalling, Canada’s New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh tweeted: “I stand in solidarity with the farmers from Punjab and across India — and, I call on the Indian government to engage in peaceful dialogue rather than violence” He thanked Jack Harris, MP for St. John’s East, for his advocacy. “We are shocked to see the In-

dian government’s suppression of farmers protesting new laws which will endanger their livelihood. Instead of using water cannons and tear gas, the Indian government needs to engage in open dialogue with farmers,” said Harris. “Peaceful protests are fundamental in any democracy, and I urge for the rights of the protestors to be respected,” said Navdeep Bains, MP for Mississauga-Malton. “Shocking scenes from Delhi,” remarked MP from Britain, Preet Kaur Gill. “Farmers are peacefully protesting over controversial bills that will impact their livelihoods. Water cannons and tear gas, are being used to silence them.” Tracing his roots to a farmer family, Indo-Canadian politician

Gurratan Singh said the images of police brutality were horrific. “I come from a family of farmers. I feel the pain and struggle of farmers protesting laws that threaten their livelihoods. The state continues to meet peaceful protestors with violence and brutality,” he tweeted along with the video of his speech made by him in the Ontario Assembly. “Farmers are the backbone of our society. They feed cities, and right now they are under attack in India. Folks in my riding are concerned about new laws that are passed by the Indian government that are going to hurt the farmers in Punjab, Haryana and others across India. “That’s why I am asking all the members of this House to come together to stand with farmers against these unjust laws

passed by the Indian government, so farmers in India can live with respect and dignity that they deserve,” Gurratan Singh said in his speech. Standing with farmers in India, Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, Andrea Horwath, said: “Everyone deserves to be able to exercise their democratic rights without fear of state-sanctioned violence”. Canadian MP Tim Uppal posted, “India’s farmers deserve to be heard and respected. This is horrific.” The farmers are protesting against the farm laws as they feel that these laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporate entities.

New Delhi (IANS): In a major diplomatic offensive, the Indian government on Friday warned the Canadian government of serious damage to bilateral relations if it continued to interfere in India’s domestic matters. The ministry of external affairs on Friday summoned the Canadian High Commissioner and slammed the Justin Trudeau government over its recent support to farmers’ agitation in Punjab and Haryana. An official statement said that the Canadian High Commissioner was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs and informed that comments by the Canadian Prime Minister, some cabinet ministers and MPs on issues relating to Indian farmers “constitute an unacceptable interference in our internal affairs.” “Such actions, if continued, would

Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. have a seriously damaging impact on ties between India and Cana-

da,” the statement warned. The ministry said the comments

by the Canadian leadership “have encouraged gatherings of extremist activities” in front of India’s High Commission and consulates in Canada that raise issues of safety and security. “We expect the Canadian Government to ensure the fullest security of Indian diplomatic personnel and its political leaders to refrain from pronouncements that legitimise extremist activism,” the government said. The Canadian Prime Minister, earlier this week while extending his support to the farmers protest, had said, “I would be remiss if I didn’t start by recognising the news coming out of India about the protests by farmers. The situation is concerning, and we are all very worried about family and friends. I know that’s the reality for many of you.”

Four rounds of talks between the federal government and farmers’ representatives in New Delhi have failed to come up with a solution and the next one has been scheduled for Saturday, December 5. For more stories on the farmers’ protests, see our World Section in this issue.

Punjab Chief Minister slams Haryana Chief Minister over ‘Khalistani’ remark

Chandigarh (IANS): Lashing out at his Haryana counterpart for inflicting brutality on Punjab’s farmers, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday demanded an unequivocal apology from Manohar Lal Khattar, accusing him of spreading lies by saying “Khalistanis are managing the protests.” “Khattar is lying that he tried calling me earlier and I did not respond. But now, after what he has done to my farmers, I will not speak to him even if he calls me 10 times. Unless he apologises and admits that he did wrong with Punjab’s farmers, I will not forgive him,” Amarinder Singh told the media. After Haryana Police’s actions to use tear gas shells and water cannons on Punjab’s farmers, which injured

many, there is no way he would talk to Khattar again as “neighbour or no neighbour,” Amarinder Singh asserted. The Punjab Chief Minister said that if he could talk to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister so many times on the farmers’ issue, why would he not

take calls from a neighbouring Chief Minister if he had truly called earlier. Questioning Khattar’s decision to not allow the farmers to go to the national capital peacefully when the Centre was ready to talk to them and even the Delhi government had no problem in letting them in, Amarinder

Singh demanded to know “who’s Khattar to come in between? What business does he have interfering in this whole affair?” Amarinder Singh also slammed Khattar for making baseless allegations that he was instigating the farmers and provoking them to agitate. “I am a nationalist to the core. I run a border state and will never do anything to create law and order problem of any kind,” he asserted, adding that for 60 days, the farmers were blocking Punjab’s railway tracks, causing more than Rs 43,000 crore [1 crore = 10 million] in losses to the state. “I will not take this nonsense from Khattar. Don’t I have better things to do than to incite the farmers,” he

asked, adding that “sometimes they say it’s Khalistanis who’re managing the protests and sometimes they accuse me of doing it. Let them make up their minds.” The Chief Minister categorically declared that no political party is involved in the farm protests, which are spontaneous reactions of the farmers who are fighting for their future. Lambasting Khattar’s charge that the farmers were creating law and order problem, the Punjab Chief Minister said that Punjabis are law-abiding citizens and it is Haryana which is damaging public property and blocking the highways by forcibly stopping the farmers. Terming as ludicrous Khattar’s claim that Haryana farmers were not part

of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation, Amarinder Singh said that Punjab’s intelligence showed that as many as 40,000-50,000 farmers from the neighbouring state had joined the march to the national capital, which even the Centre’s intelligence reports would have borne out. “He (Khattar) doesn’t know what’s happening in his own state and he’s telling me what to do in my state,” Amarinder Singh. Declaring that nobody is stopping corporate houses from coming into the agricultural marketing system, the Chief Minister pointed out that they are procuring and running businesses in Punjab even now. They can do this while continuing with the existing system, both can run in parallel, he added.

More than 1,000 vehicles expected at Surrey rally on Saturday to support farmers in India

SURREY RCMP on Friday advised the public of probable traffic congestion that is expected in Cloverdale on Saturday, December 5 in connection with rallies organized in support of farmers in India. It is anticipated that more than

one thousand vehicles will converge at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds and then form a convoy travelling to the Indian Consulate General in Vancouver beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Those wishing to avoid the

rally and any associated traffic concerns are asked to choose alternate routes. It is specifically recommended to avoid the 176th Street corridor, between 60th Avenue and Highway 1, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Surrey RCMP said they respect the rights of participants who are exercising their freedom of peaceful assembly. “However, we are reminding all participants that BC Provincial Health Orders are currently in effect which have placed re-

strictions and prohibitions on events and gatherings,” they added. “We are asking rally participants to please stay in their vehicles and not intermingle or congregate with other participants. If you have to step out

of your vehicle, please wear a mask and maintain social distancing.” Members of Surrey RCMP will be in the area assisting with any traffic safety concerns and will be monitoring the situation.

Farmers’ groups in India give call for ‘Bharat Bandh’ on December 8

New Delhi: Dimming hopes of a compromise, a joint front of protesting farmer groups on Friday rejected the Centre’s proposals to amend the three contentious agriculture laws and gave a call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on December 8. They reiterated their demands for a total repeal of the three central

laws. The announcement by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha came ahead of a crucial round of talks scheduled on Saturday between the joint front of farmer unions and top Central Ministers tasked to hammer out a deal with the protesters. Holding a press conference at

Singhu border here, the Morcha leaders said the decision to seek repeal of the three laws was reached unanimously after two rounds of talks – the first between the leaders of Punjab farmer organisations and the later among the farmer unions across the country. Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lak-

howal) general-secretary Harvinder Singh Lakhowal, who presided over the morning meetings, said the farmer unions had given a call for “Bharat Bandh” on December 8, intensifying their agitation, besides deciding to burn the effigies of the Modi government and corporate houses on

December 5. He said that sportspersons and other dignitaries would return their medals to the government on December 7 as a mark of protest. Lakhowal said that toll barriers across the country would be made “free” for a day on a later date. He added that by December 8, the farmers

unions would also attempt to close the two highways leading to Delhi that are still open. Bharatiya Kisan Union generalsecretary Yudhvir Singh, also speaking at the press conference, said that the farmers were fast losing patience and were ready for a “do-or-die” battle.

North Delta store owners help people from falling prey to scammers

DELTA Police note that retail stores – and those who work in and own these businesses – can have a big role to play in helping to stop a growing type of fraud. Mike’s Convenience Store in North Delta has already stopped a number of customers from losing thousands of dollars to scammers who tried to dupe their victims into

making deposits into a Bitcoin ATM located in the store. On November 12, Constable Dustin Classen from the Delta Police Cybercrime Unit stopped by the store to proactively reach out to owner Sarita Patel and her husband Ravi. “We talked about common bitcoin scams and they agreed to post warning

Common scams might involve threats to arrest people for alleged non-payment of taxes (CRA scam) and that people could be deported, etc. Hours after Classen left the store, Sarita and Ravi were able to stop a young man from depositing $5,500 in the ATM, as part of an at-

treatments at the Dukh Nivaran Pharmacy to ensuring every patient has safe transportation to medical appointments and delivery of life-saving medication to their homes. These funds will have a direct impact on the lives of individuals facing cancer, which remains the number one health issue facing British Columbians. BC Cancer estimates that almost 10,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the Fraser Valley this year. Cases are projected to rise by up to 40 per cent in the next 10-15 years due to the growing and aging population. The Fraser Valley will see the most significant in-

crease in cancer diagnoses in the province with a 65 per cent increase in patients by 2030. “United with Surrey Hospitals Foundation and the extraordinary leadership of RED FM, the BC Cancer Foundation thanks every generous do-

nor from the bottom of our hearts who supported the Gurpurab Radiothon, said Sarah Roth, President and CEO, BC Cancer Foundation. “Together, with our incredible community, we are bringing better health to our loved ones facing cancer.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday formally introduced key members of his economic team, including Janet Yellen, who would be the first woman to serve as Treasury secretary, and Neera Tanden, 50, who would be the first woman of color and first South Asian American to oversee the office if confirmed. CNN reported that Tanden said it is her “profound honor to help shape the budgets and programs to keep lifting Americans up, to Neera Tanden pull families back from the brink, to give everybody the fair chance my mom got, and that every single person deserves. “That’s the America they were drawn to, the America the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect are ready to grow, she added. Tanden noted that as Vice President-elect Harris, her mother also was born in India and immigrated to the US to pursue a better life. A day earlier, Tanden tweeted: “After my parents were divorced when I was young, my mother relied on public food and housing programs to get by. Now, I’m being nominated to help ensure those programs are secure, and ensure families like mine can live with dignity. I am beyond honored. Biden’s announcement on Monday that he planned to nominate Tanden sparked backlash from Republicans as well as some on the left. But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor that Tanden “is so eminently qualified that some on the Republican side, grasping at straws, have taken issue with comments made on Twitter criticizing the policy positions of Republicans in Congress. He said: “Honestly, the hypocrisy is astounding. If Republicans are concerned about criticism on Twitter, their complaints are better directed at President [Donald] Trump. According to Wikipedia, “[Tanden] is the president of the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington, D.C., where she has served in different capacities since 2003. “Tanden has worked on several Democratic presidential campaigns, including those of Michael Dukakis in 1988, Bill Clinton in 1992, and Barack Obama in 2008. Tanden advised Hillary Clinton’s successful 2016 primary campaign and unsuccessful 2016 general election campaign. She was also a senior staffer on Clinton’s unsuccessful campaign for the 2008 Democratic nomination. During the Obama administration, Tanden helped draft the Affordable Care Act. A native of Bedford, Massachusetts, Tanden received her bachelor of science degree from UCLA and her JD from Yale Law School.

Munroop Singh Hayer charged in November 2019 Surrey homicide of Andrew Baldwin

A fourth man has been arrested and charged in connection with the November 11, 2019 Surrey homicide of 30-year-old Andrew Baldwin. On November 30, 2020, 27-year-old Munroop Singh Hayer was arrested by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and charged by the B.C. Prosecution Service with first-degree murder in the death of Baldwin. Three other men – Jordan Bottomley, Jagpal Hothi and Jasman Basran – were previously charged in connection

Andrew Baldwin with the homicide. Hayer was to appear before a judge in B.C. Provincial Court on December 2. On November 11, 2019, at

approximately 4:52 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a call for assistance from a home in the 10700-block of 124th Street. When officers arrived on scene, they found Baldwin unresponsive with critical injuries. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Integrated Police Dog Services was brought in to conduct a search for the suspect, who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants with reflective material around the bottom of the pant leg. He was last

seen northbound on 124th Street. Baldwin’s death was deemed a homicide and IHIT was then called in to take conduct of the investigation. IHIT worked closely with the Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather further evidence. IHIT later clarified in a tweet that the victim was not shot. “We confirm that it was NOT a shooting. Cause of death not being released at this time.”

Baldwin’s brother, 27-yearold Keith Baldwin, was fatally shot in downtown Chilliwack on October 22, 2019. He was on life support for some time, but did not survive. “The victim in this case was known to police,” IHIT Constable Harrison Mohr said at the time. Owen Dale Charpentier, a prolific offender, was charged with his murder in May 2020. “IHIT’s commitment is to ensure that each and every person complicit in a homi-

cide is held to account. I feel we have successfully demonstrated that in this investigation,” said Superintendent Dave Chauhan, Officer-InCharge of IHIT. “I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Andrew Baldwin who have undergone tremendous hardship this past year and my sincerest gratitude to the members of IHIT and the Surrey RCMP for carrying out their duties in exemplary fashion.” No further details will be released as the matter is now before the court, said IHIT.

Riyad Rasheed, 29, was Surrey homicide victim in Lower Mainland gang conflict

THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Monday that Riyad Rasheed, 29, was Sunday night’s homicide victim in Surrey. He was known to police and his murder is believed to have been a targeted incident with links to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict. IHIT is calling on the public

to help further its investigation into his shooting death of at a Surrey commercial plaza. On November 29 at 7:41 p.m., the Surrey RCMP responded to numerous calls of shots fired outside a Shopper’s Drug Mart near 152nd Street and Fraser Highway. Officers arrived to find Rasheed with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at scene. A dark colored sedan left the area immediately following the shooting. At 9 p.m., the Richmond RCMP received a report of a vehicle fire near Cambie and No 7 roads. This vehicle is believed to be the suspect vehicle from the earlier shooting in Surrey. Anyone with dash cam video who

was near the areas of the shooting in Surrey and the car fire in Richmond is asked to call IHIT immediately. One media report said that Rasheed played with the Fijian Soccer League of Greater Vancouver and even tried out for the Fiji national soccer team. IHIT is currently working closely with its partners

from the Surrey RCMP, the Richmond RCMP, the Lower Mainland I-Teams and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence. “This was a brazen shooting in a commercial plaza with numerous members of the public in the area at the time of the incident,” said IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang. “The perpetrators of this violence

need to be held to account. They will now be targeted for prosecution.” Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551IHIT (4448), or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Should you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).

David Thind, 68, charged in connection to assault and arson in Whalley

A 68-year-old man has been charged in connection to an assault and arson investigation that occurred in Whalley this past summer. On August 28, shortly after 10 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a structure fire in the 13000-block of 112A Avenue, where a residence was fully engulfed in flames. Three

ON Thursday, December 3, just after 5:30 a.m., the Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle col-

individuals from inside the residence were rushed to an area hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, one of whom also suffered from injuries consistent with having been assaulted. The Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit (GIU) assumed conduct of the investigation and after

completing a thorough analysis of the evidence, identified a suspect. On November 19, David Thind was charged with arson, disregard for life, assault, and uttering threats, and a warrant issued for his arrest. On November 23, Thind was arrested and remains in custody. Thind is known to police.

“If not for the quick action of the residents, this deliberately set fire no doubt could have had more tragic consequences,” said Staff-Sgt. Kirk Duncan, Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit Commander, on Monday. “Our partnership with the Surrey Fire Service and the cooperation of several witnesses enabled

investigators to identify the suspect and gather sufficient evidence to support criminal charges.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.

ing from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite all efforts by first responders, the woman succumbed to her injuries.

Up to between $70 and $100 billion over three years to jumpstart Canada’s recovery CHRYSTIA Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, on Monday released Supporting Canadians and Fighting COVID-19: Fall Economic Statement 2020. This plan will continue to protect Canadians’ health, jobs and the economy, the federal government said. The government said its priority continues to be fighting COVID-19 and protecting Canadians’ health and safety. It said it has provided extraordinary support to provinces and territories to this end. Canada has also secured the most diverse portfolio of vaccine candidates of any country in the world, with agreements for up to 429 million doses from seven leading candidates. And when a safe and effective vaccine is available, the government said it will make it available, for free. Until such time, testing and tracing continue to be critical in our defence against

Chrystia Freeland the virus, and that is why the government said it has procured over 38 million rapid tests, which is three times the total number of tests performed in Canada since the pandemic began. “Recognizing the tragic deaths from COVID-19 that we saw in the spring, the Fall Economic Statement moves forward with a plan to set new national standards and seeks to establish a new $1 billion Safe Long-term Care Fund that will help provinces and territories protect seniors and our most vulnerable,” it added. The government said: “The

Fall Economic Statement also provided an update on the Canadian economy, showing that the Government of Canada’s unprecedented investment has effectively managed to stabilize the economy through the crisis. Nearly 80 per cent of the jobs lost at the start of this crisis have been recouped and bankruptcies are well below levels prior to this pandemic. “However, many businesses continue to face significant challenges as Canadians limit physical contacts and employment gains have been slower for women, young people, racialized Canadians and lower income workers. The coming months will be difficult and ongoing fiscal support will remain necessary deep into 2021 in order to protect jobs and prevent widespread permanent losses in our economy.” The government said that once the virus is under con-

trol, it will invest in a growth plan of roughly three to four per cent of GDP, up to between $70 and $100 billion, over three years, to jumpstart Canada’s recovery. Time-limited investments will build Canada out of this recession towards an economy that is cleaner, more inclusive, more innovative and more competitive. The Fall Economic Statement puts a down payment on this growth plan, investing in measures that can be safely implemented now and begins work on transformative initiatives such as a Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care System, programs to support the economy’s green transformation and initiatives to address systemic racism. “Canada entered the pandemic in a position of strength, with the lowest debt-to-GDP ratio among G7 peers, a position it still retains. Our history of prudent fiscal management and current historically low borrowing rates have meant that Canada’s debt is affordable now, and will be for future generations. In fact, federal debt-servicing costs, relative to the size of Canada’s economy, are at a 100-year low,” the government said. It added that its fiscal management remains prudent and responsible, including for future generations. It said the Fall Economic Statement will support Canadians through this crisis and ensure Canada’s future economy is resilient, inclusive, and strong for everyone.

Freeland said: “Our government’s plan is focused on fighting this pandemic, supporting Canadians and ensuring that once the virus is defeated we can invest in growth and jobs for everyone. We will do whatever it takes to help Canadians through this crisis. We will invest in every necessary public health measure. We will support Canadians and Canadian businesses in a way that is targeted and effective. And we will ensure the Canadian economy that emerges from this pandemic is greener, more inclusive, more innovative, and more competitive than the one that preceded it, with a stronger, more resilient middle class.” Quick Facts * To date, more than eight of every 10 dollars spent in Canada to fight COVID-19 and support Canadians has been spent by the federal government and this unprecedented support has prevented economic scarring and stabilized the economy. * The Fall Economic Statement proposes new measures to see Canadians through the pandemic and support a robust and resilient recovery, including: - To fight COVID-19, investments in testing and tracing, procurement of personal protective equipment, and a suite of measures to protect people in long-term care, and $150 million to improve ventilation in public buildings and help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

- To support businesses big and small through the second wave, increasing the maximum rate of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy to 75 per cent for the period beginning December 20, 2020 and extending this rate until March 13, 2021, and extending the current rates of the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy and Lockdown Support until March 13, 2021. Both programs will be there for businesses until June 2021. - To support Canada’s hardest-hit industries, like tourism, hotels, arts and culture, and the air sector, new support including the new Highly Affected Sectors Credit Availability Program. To help families with young children through the pandemic, provide temporary support of up to $1,200 in 2021 for each child under the age of six for families entitled to the Canada Child Benefit. - To make a down payment on our recovery, support for Canadians to make their homes greener and more energy efficient, a plan to plant 2 billion trees and laying the groundwork for a Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care System. * On Monday, the Department of Finance Canada also released the Annual Financial Report of the Government of Canada for 2019–20. This annual publication provides an overview of the government’s spending and revenue for the previous fiscal year and highlights the factors affecting these results.

B.C. health authorities accept report on Indigenous-specific racism, discrimination in health system

B.C. health authorities on Tuesday accepted independent reviewer Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s report – In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenousspecific Racism and Discrimination in B.C. Health Care. In a joint statement, the board chairs, and presidents and CEOs of Fraser Health, Interior Health, Island Health, Northern Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services, and Vancouver Coastal Health said: “On behalf of our organizations, we accept the report’s findings on Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination in B.C.’s health system. In partnership with the

Ministry of Health, we commit to implementing all recommendations within our responsibility to lead, and further commit to partner and support implementation of all others. We will undertake this work together with, and be guided by, Indigenous health and community leaders. “The report’s first finding bears repeating – Widespread Indigenous-specific stereotyping, racism and discrimination exist in the B.C. health-care system. To the generations of Indigenous peoples who have lived these experiences, and those who continue to face harm, we apologize for our actions and our inaction in righting

wrongs. To health authority Indigenous employees and physicians, we apologize to you as well for the impacts you have experienced. “We want to reinforce that racism has no place in our facilities, programs and services, or our society. “We have tremendous appreciation for reviewer Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond (Aki-Kwe) and her team for their work, and the almost 9,000 indigenous peoples and health-care workers whose courage to share their stories and experiences help shape this critically important report and blueprint for change.

“Te’ta-in (Sound of Thunder) Shane Pointe – the Knowledge Keeper for this important report – has called upon all involved in B.C. health care to “bring dignity to those who have not been afforded it. “The absolute clarity of these words and what the words mean to those who receive care in our facilities, and through our programs and services, describe the work in front of us. As leaders in health-care service delivery, and as collaborative partners in creating a healthy society for all we have the privilege to serve, this is our responsibility and our accountability to you.

Surrey road crews prepared for winter road conditions THE City of Surrey says its road crews are prepared for snow and ice conditions to ensure everyone gets to and from their destination safely. Salt supplies have been replenished at the City’s 17,000 metric ton salt shed, fleets have been winterized and snow response technologies have been activated. “In these times of uncertainty, one thing that remains is our commitment to the safety and well-being of all of our residents. Ensuring that our 4,000

kilometers of main roads are safe and passable during the winter season is a top priority, said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday. “This is no small task, but our staff are prepared and ready. As we have learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, it takes a community effort to keep everyone safe. So, please, do your part to clear snow and ice from sidewalks outside your home and prepare your vehicle for winter driving.

The City’s comprehensive winter road preparedness strategy includes: * A diverse 73-unit winter maintenance fleet, ready to clear snow and de-ice over 4,000 kilometres of roadway * Three strategically located materials handling facilities, including an industry-leading 17,000 metric ton salt shed * State-of-the-art technologies, such as the Road Weather Information System, Traffic Camera Network, and Global

Review recommends steps to solve widespread racism in B.C. health care

INDIGENEOUS people in British Columbia are exposed to widespread racism that often results in negative experiences at the point of care, inequitable medical treatment, physical harm and even death, the independent review into Indigenous-specific discrimination in the province’s health-care system has found. Informed by the voices of nearly 9,000 Indigenous patients, family members, third-party witnesses and health-care workers, as well as unprecedented analysis of health data, the review found clear evidence of pervasive interpersonal and systemic racism that adversely affects not only patient and family experiences but also long-term health outcomes for Indigenous peoples. The report, In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in B.C. Health Care, concludes that this problem is widely acknowledged by many who work in the system, including those in leadership positions. The report makes 24 recommendations to address what is a systemic problem, deeply rooted in colonialism. “Indigenous people and health-care workers have spoken clearly – racism is an ugly and undeniable problem in B.C. health care that must be urgently addressed,” said Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, independent reviewer. The Addressing Racism Review was launched in June 2020 by Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, after allegations were made about an organized “Price is Right” game involving guessing Indigenous patients’ blood alcohol levels in B.C. hospital emergency rooms. A detailed examination of those allegations found no evidence of an organized game occurring as originally depicted. The

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond review found anecdotal and episodic evidence of multiple activities that resemble these allegations in some fashion, but none of them could be described as organized, widespread or targeting only Indigenous patients. “Nevertheless, our review found clear evidence of a much more widespread and insidious problem – a lack of cultural safety and hundreds of examples of prejudice and racism throughout the entire B.C. health-care system,” Turpel-Lafond said. “That doesn’t mean every Indigenous person who gets health care will experience direct or indirect racism, but it does mean that any Indigenous person could experience it. “Many of the accounts we heard were deeply disturbing, had clearly caused significant harm, and created lasting mistrust and fear of the health-care system. I thank Indigenous people and health-care workers across B.C. for having the courage to share their stories and to help us

Escaped federal offender taken into custody by Abbotsford Police ON Thursday at 2:55 p.m., Abbotsford Police officers responded to a report of shots fired at Abbotsford Way and Marshall Road. It was determined that Correctional Service of Canada officers were escorting a federal offender to a medical appointment when he escaped from their custody. While attempting to apprehend the escapee, a correctional officer discharged their firearm. No injuries were sustained as a result of the firearm discharge. With the assistance of Abbotsford Police of-

ficers, Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Services and RCMP Air One Helicopter, the escapee was taken into custody without incident. There is no further risk to the public. Abbotsford Police Major Crime Detectives have assumed conduct of this investigation. Anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident, or has CCTV, dashcam video or information about this investigation is asked to contact the Major Crime Unit at 604-859-5225.

to shine a light on this important issue.” More than two-thirds of Indigenous respondents to the review’s Indigenous Peoples’ Survey said they had experienced discrimination based on their ancestry – and only 16% reported “never” having been discriminated against – while accessing health care. More than one-third of non-Indigenous respondents to the Health Care Workers’ Survey reported having witnessed interpersonal racism or discrimination against Indigenous patients or their families and friends. Many of the more than 600 email and telephone submissions featured people expressing deep frustration over experiencing racist treatment and the lack of accountability by the health system for these incidents. These included patients and family members being negatively stereotyped in a multitude of ways, resulting in unacceptable personal interactions, poorer quality care and medical mistakes, and sometimes leading to future avoidance of treatment. The review also revealed widespread dissatisfaction of Indigenous people with the various health-care complaints systems and the lack of a comprehensive training program and on-the-job education for health-care workers on anti-racism, cultural safety and humility. The review recommends that the B.C. government lead and co-ordinate apologies for Indigenous-specific racism in the health care system, and affirm its responsibility to direct and implement a comprehensive system-wide approach to addressing the problem, including changes in

laws, policies and practices to align with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as required by B.C.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. The report calls for all health-service providers, including health authorities, to acknowledge the problem, apologize and take immediate steps to end such racism. The review also recommends that the Province establish three key new positions to provide leadership on the issue: * a B.C. Indigenous health officer; * a B.C. Indigenous health representative and advocate; and * an associate deputy minister of Indigenous health. Among other recommendations, the report calls for the Ministry of Health to establish a seniorlevel policy and accountability table with Métis Nation BC (MNBC) and direct health authorities to enter into letters of understanding with MNBC and Métis Chartered Communities; for government to work with Indigenous organizations to improve the system’s patient complaint processes to address individual and systemic Indigenous-specific racism; for the development of a new approach to cultural safety and humility training for B.C. health-care workers; and for a new school of Indigenous medicine at the University of British Columbia. Jobs Minister says B.C.’s economy continuing upward swing, but BC Liberals criticize government RAVI Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economy Recovery and Innovation, in response to the release of Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for November, said on Friday: “From the outset of this pandemic, our government understood that the key to building a foundation of a strong recovery is a strong public health response focused on keeping people safe. “The Labour Force Survey for November showed B.C.’s economy continuing its upward swing, with another 23,900 jobs gained throughout the province. “Since the pandemic’s most severe impact on the economy in April, B.C. has had substantial job growth for seven consecutive months, bringing our total employment to 98.5% of pre-pandemic levels. This is the highest job recovery rate of any of Canada’s four largest provinces. “Additionally, B.C.’s unem-

Ravi Kahlon ployment rate has fallen to 7.1%, well below the national average of 8.5%. “However, we know there are businesses still struggling and it’s going to be many months before vaccines can get to everyone in British Columbia. Until then, we are focused on building a foundation of recovery that works for everyone in this province. “B.C.’s recovery plan includes funding and measures to strengthen health care, create good jobs and opportunities for people, and help businesses come back stronger.

“Thousands of B.C. businesses will receive direct supports from the various measures outlined in our economic recovery plan. “These supports provide direct funding to hard-hit communities and businesses, making it easier for them to invest in the people and capital they need.” For information on services and benefits available to help people and businesses through the pandemic, visit: www.gov.bc.ca/COVIDgovernmentbenefits For non-health related information, including financial, child care and education supports, travel, transportation and essential service information, visit: www.gov. bc.ca/Covid-19 Or call 1 888 COVID19 (1 888 268-4319) between 7:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. (Pacific time), seven days a week. lack of progress in delivering an effective job creation plan,” said Stone. “Having 37,400 fewer jobs compared to the pre-COVID benchmark is far too many. Now is the time for innovation, not more excuses from the NDP after having already delayed B.C.’s economic recovery for two months with an unnecessary election. They must come up with a sector by sector plan to support industries devastated by impacts from the pandemic, in particular tourism.” The NDP government has so far failed to give the tourism industry the lifeline they’ve been asking for. “The NDP government hasn’t done enough to help B.C.’s hard-hit tourism sector, which is in dire need,” said Teresa Wat, BC Liberal Critic for Tourism, Arts and Culture. “Thousands of tourism operators have struggled without a recovery plan from the government. Today’s numbers don’t capture business closures

resulting from the most recent, province-wide health orders. The tourism industry is heading into a bleak winter if the NDP continues its delay strategy.” After missing the deadline for the Second Quarterly Update, the new Finance Minister recently stated she was considering delaying her first provincial budget by weeks. “The holiday season is in front of us and people can’t wait for the government to deliver on much-needed supports,” added Stone. “It is critical for the fall economic update and the 2021 budget to be delivered on schedule as families, nonprofits and small businesses need a robust and responsive economic program not only to financially survive, but thrive. We need investment in child care programs so that women can return to the labour force. No British Columbian wants to see this economic nightmare further dragged into the new year.”

It also continues to highlight the disturbing trend of women being disproportionally impacted by the pandemic with November’s employment gains dominated by men over 25. Todd Stone, BC Liberal Critic for Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation called on the NDP government to immediately focus on accelerating job recovery especially for women and bridging gaps in supports urgently needed by people and businesses. “Women are bearing the brunt of job losses and we expect immediate action, not more delays from John Horgan and the NDP who have been in power throughout the pandemic. My appointment as Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives is part of that commitment. I look forward to supporting the work required to address the findings in Dr. Turpel-Lafond’s report.” Singh added: “That support will include engaging British Columbians to create a new anti-racism act and working with the

Falls from ladders a major safety risk during holiday season: WorkSafeBC

AS holiday decorations begin lighting our businesses and homes in the days ahead, WorkSafeBC is reminding workers, employers, and the public to use ladders safely. Falls from ladders are a common source of injury in B.C., particularly at this time of year when people are putting up and taking down lights and decorations and cleaning gutters—often in cold and wet weather conditions. Every year, hundreds of people are seri-

ously injured while using a ladder. In 2019, there were 1,077 accepted claims as a result of falls from ladders across all industries in B.C., including 325 serious injuries and four deaths. “To stay safe, you need to choose the right ladder for the job, ensure it’s in good working condition, and take the time to set it up and use safely, says Barry Nakahara, Senior Manager, Prevention Field Services at WorkSafeBC.

WorkSafeBC urges workers and the public to use ladders safely this holiday season by following these safety tips: * Select the appropriate ladder for the job. It must be long enough to extend one metre above the upper landing. * Inspect the ladder to ensure it is in good working condition before each use. * Always set up the ladder on a firm, level surface. * Maintain three points of contact while climbing a ladder:

two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot. * Wear slip-proof footwear. * Don’t carry heavy or bulky objects while climbing up or down a ladder. * Wind, rain, and snow may pose additional hazards. Avoid ladder work in inclement weather. * Check for power lines and ensure a minimum distance of three meters can be maintained at all times before starting work.

NDP calls on government to get back in business of making vaccines

FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday called for the government to make sure Canada has the capacity to manufacture vaccines and critical medicines for Canadians here at home. He said that this pandemic has shown that Canadians shouldn’t be forced to rely on production in other countries in emergencies. As a result of not being prepared, the Liberal government will be forcing Canadians to wait even longer for a vaccine to protect against COVID-19. “These are tough times for a lot of people and people were hopeful that a vaccine would help them

But the Liberals are making people in Canada wait months longer to get a vaccine — leaving more people to get sick and potentially die from COVID-19, said Singh. “Investing in public manufacturing of vaccines and critical medicine here in Canada would better protect Canadians from COVID-19 and help them through the pandemic. And future health crises. In the past, Conservative and Liberal governments privatized labs and vaccine manufacturers leaving Canadians on the hook without access to a vaccine and critical medicines. The Liberals handed

billion-dollar contracts to big pharmaceutical companies and failed to make sure vaccines needed to protect people from COVID-19 can be made here in Canada. While other countries like Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. can manufacture their own vaccines to protect their residents, Canada is missing in action, Singh said. “Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government have failed to do the work to make vaccines here in Canada and to more quickly protect Canadians from this virus. B.C. and Quebec premiers the most popular in Canada over the past nine months.

THE latest data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds Canadians generally continue to hold positive views of their respective premiers’ job performance. But the trend line also indicates the days of provincial leaders appearing incapable of doing wrong politically – as they did in the spring and summer – are long gone. BRITISH Columbia Premier John Horgan and his New Democrats gambled with an early election call in October and – amid record low voter turnout – won a majority mandate. For many, the move was a cynical attempt at concentrating power in a time of turmoil. For others, it made the case for the full decision-making authority that comes with a majority

government, which eluded the party in 2017. Now, despite skyrocketing cases of COVID-19 in and around Metro Vancouver, Horgan maintains a high level of approval. Nearly two-thirds (64%) say they approve of his perfor-

mance, five points lower than last quarter. His approval is tied for highest in the country despite the new wave of physical-distancing and social restrictions in B.C., something residents have shown a willingness to absorb into their lives

IN Quebec, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken more lives and infected more people per capita than anywhere in the country. Despite this, Premier Francois Legault continues to be perceived as a fixture of strength, his approval statistically unchanged at 64 per cent. Legault and his party implemented an indoor mask mandate over the summer and have recently elevated alert levels in much of the province, which come with closures of public spaces and restrictions on group sizes.

him to earn the approval of Ontarians previously entrenched along party lines. While Ford’s approval remains at a majority level, it has fallen 11 points in the last three months, now sitting at 55 per cent. COVID-19 hospitalizations have climbed to second wave highs in the province, and the Peel region and City of Toronto have entered the lockdown level of the province’s protocols. Ford recently lambasted those protesting restrictions, calling them “buffoons”, and encouraged residents to do their part to turn the situation around.

FROM a public opinion perspective, the early days of the pandemic were a strongpoint for Premier Doug Ford in Ontario. Ford’s shift in persona enabled

ALBERTA is the only province in Canada without an indoor mask mandate and Premier Jason Kenney continues to resist such a policy, suggesting it would

create a backlash from residents. Most of the province is under such a mandate due to municipal rules, but Kenney’s actions appear to be generating criticism from some Albertans. Last week the Premier cast a light on the South Asians in the province, saying that new cases within that community were a “wakeup call” for the group to reduce social contacts. Opposition politicians condemned the premier for singling out that community in particular but evidently deciding not to mention others who have been defying groupsize restrictions to protest in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer. Just 40 per cent of Albertans approve of Kenney’s performance as Alberta currently faces the worst outbreak in the country.

SURREY RCMP frontline officers have recovered $200,000 worth of cargo and a stolen semi-trailer in Whalley. Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on November 29, Surrey RCMP received a report of a stolen semi-trailer containing approximately $200,000 worth of cargo from a business in the 11700-block of Tannery Road. Frontline officers gathered helpful evidence from the caller which led them to a nearby industrial site, in the 12300-block of 104th Avenue, where the trailer had been abandoned and emptied of its high-value cargo. Later in the day, at approximately 3 p.m., through conventional investigative techniques officers identified where the cargo was being stored by the thieves. Officers subsequently recovered the stolen

cargo in the 10600-block of Timberland Road and returned it to its rightful owner. No arrests have been made at this time. Officers are working to identify the suspects involved in this theft operation. “This appeared to be a carefully planned act as it’s not an easy task stealing a semi-trailer,” said Staff-Sgt. Dave Wise, Surrey RCMP Watch Commander, on Tuesday. “The recovery of the high-value stolen items was a result of good investigative techniques coupled with crucial information provided by the caller.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime. ca.

Unrelenting demand for Fraser Valley detached and townhomes continued in November SURREY, British Columbia(GLOBE NEWSWIRE) In a release issued under the same headline on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 by Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, please note the first sentence of the third paragraph should instead read, “The Board received 2,217 new listings in November, a 28.0 per cent decrease compared to October’s intake and an 18.1 per cent increase compared to the 1,877 new listings received during the same month last year. Complete corrected text follows. For the fifth consecutive month, demand for real estate in the Fraser Valley showed no signs of waning. Overall property sales for the month of November again set a new Board record. Sales records were also broken in September and October; and since July, all activity including new listings, has continued to be inordinately high.

The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 2,173 sales of all property types on its Multiple Listing ServiceŽ (MLSŽ) in November, an increase of 54.7 per cent compared to the 1,405 sales in November of last year, and an 8.3 per cent decrease month-over-month compared to the 2,370 sales in October. The Board received 2,217 new listings in November, a 28.0 per cent decrease compared to October’s intake and an 18.1 per cent increase compared to the 1,877 new listings received during the same month last year. For November, it was the second highest volume of new inventory in the last decade. Chris Shields, President of the Board, observes, “We’re running out of superlatives. We expected November activity to moderate due to the season, but the desire for family-sized homes and their benefits continues to dominate.

2021 Corvette C8: Mid - Engined Beauty offers thrills Preview by Veeno Dewan The biggest news about the new 2021 Corvette is, of course, the fact that it’s mid-engine, and according to Chevy, one of the benefits of this setup is the shorter nose, which means a shorter, straighter, and stiffer steering system. The rear weight bias—improves straight-line acceleration, and helps improve the steering experience since it reduces the need for steering assist. In addition, Chevy mentions visibility and utility (the car has two trunks) as benefits of the architecture. The mid-engined 6.2-liter

Small Block V8 that Chevy calls the “LT2.” It makes 490 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque in standard form, and the performance exhaust that comes with the Z51 package brings those figures up to 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. The new Corvette’s 6.2-liter V8 is mated to a new Trem-

ec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that Chevy says has a low first gear to yield better launch times, and closely spaced secondthrough-sixth gears to keep the engine near its peak power operating point on the track. Gears seven and eight, Chevy says, are tall to keep engine speed down

to yield fuel economy and lower engine stresses during highway cruising. That transmission, along with the 495 horsepower V8, should yield a 0-60 mph time in under three seconds, Chevy claims. That is, when equipped with the Z51 Performance Package that adds larger brake rotors, performance tires, a special front splitter and rear spoiler, brake cooling inlets in the front, a performance exhaust, more cooling capacity, and an electronic limited slip differential with a unique gear ratio. The mid-engined Corvette gets useful interior detail changes, incredibly for the

same price as 2020. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities are now standard, and the digital gauge cluster offers a few new display options including a different visualization for the tachometer for track driving. GM’s Buckle to Drive feature, which requires the driver to buckle their seatbelt before the car can be shifted out of park, is now standard. There are also a smattering of new interior and exterior colors, including a neat gray/yellow combination. Like every other new Chevrolet, the Corvette packs the latest infotainment system

on an 8-inch touchscreen with optional embedded navigation and a standard 4G LTE WI-Fi hotspot for up to seven devices. The 2021 Corvette does now offer magnetorheological dampers as a standalone option, meaning you can choose this suspension setup without the Z51 performance package. The base price for the C8 coupe is $59,995 including destination, while the C8 convertible raises that floor to $67,495. That’s before options and higher trims. Canadian pries will take into account currency fluctuations and may be higher.

2021 Jeep(R) Gladiator Willys Debuts Explore. Do More - 2021 Toyota RAV4. / 100km while all-wheelwith increased Content and Capability drive models fare almost as

Windsor Ontario: The Jeep® brand is introducing a new edition of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator in the form of the Willys models, delivering a new level of personalized content for a distinct appearance that is combined with legendary Jeep 4x4 capability. “Building on the widely popular Wrangler Willys, we’re thrilled to announce the Willys model is joining the Gladiator lineup as another way for Jeep to connect with our customers,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand - North America. “Gladiator Willy’s models harken back to the original Jeep lineup while offering an aggressive look and additional increased capability.” The 2021 Jeep Gladiator lineup is bolstered by the addition of the Willys edition and marks the first time it is available on Gladiator. The Gladiator Willys edition features a limited-slip rear differential, Rubicon cab rock rails and shocks, and 32-inch BFGoodrich KM2 mud terrain tires. These features, combined with Jeep’s Command-Trac 4x4 part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 lowrange gear ratio, bolster the Gladiator Willys’ off-road capability.

This added capability is highlighted with a rugged appearance. Special exterior design cues feature a Willy’s hood decal, heritage 4WD tailgate decal, unique black 17-inch aluminum wheels with grey pad print and a gloss black sport grille. All-weather slush mats are also standard. The Gladiator Willys also includes standard technology group with 7-inch radio with connective services and convenience group. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator, engineered from the ground up to be the most off-road capable Jeep truck ever, builds on a rich heritage of tough, dependable Jeep trucks with an unmatched combination of rugged utility, authentic Jeep design, open-air freedom, clever functionality and versatility. Equipped with the proven 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine and a versatile cargo box,

Farmers at different points along the Delhi border. New Delhi (IANS): The fourth round of talks between the Union government and the farmers’ representatives at the Vigyan Bhawan on Thursday did not reach any conclusion, but the government has softened its stance on some demands of the farmers, who are protesting against the Central farm laws passed by the Parliament in September this year, so as to end their agitation. While the farm laws won’t be rolled back, the government is considering to take some new measures on some of the demands of the farmers. Regarding apprehensions about the APMCs (mandis), the government is planning to start registration of the traders. After a long meeting on Thursday that lasted for over seven hours, Union Agriculture Minister

Narendra Singh Tomar said that the next meeting on December 5 is going to be conclusive, while the farmer leaders told IANS that they won’t step back till all the three farm laws are repealed. The meeting on Thursday started at Vigyan Bhawan at 12.30 p.m. in the presence of Tomar, Railway and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash. The government had requested the farmers’ representatives to submit their objections over the farm laws in writing so that each point could be discussed, which the farmers did. Tomar told the farmer leaders, “The Central government has no ego and it is having discussion with the farmers with an open mind. We are with the farmers.

Positive results can be achieved only through fruitful discussions. The three ministers asked the representatives of over 30 farmers’ organisations about their apprehensions over the farm laws. Almost all the farmers’ representatives demanded to withdraw the farm laws as well as the proposed penalty on stubble burning. They also expressed their displeasure over the Electricity Amendment Act, which is yet to come. The farmer leaders also talked about their apprehensions over the APMCs (mandis) and discontinuation of the minimum support price (MSP) system. Tomar assured them that the government will consider all their demands. He said the MSP will continue as before. The government will also consider the ways to empower the APMCs and

increase their utility in the future. The government will also consider about equality of taxes in the private mandis which are peripheries of the APMCs. It will also consider the registration of the traders to trade agricultural produce outside the APMCs. It will see whether the SDM or the court will intervene in case of any dispute. The farmers also expressed apprehensions about contract farming. To this, Tomar said that written agreement of the farmer’s land cannot be done in any condition, yet if there is any doubt the government is ready to address it. Now the points raised by the farmers’ organisations will be discussed in the next meeting scheduled at 2 p.m. on December 5. Tomar is hoping that the meeting will be decisive.

Kabaddi players, wrestlers, singers from Punjab join farmers’ protest New Delhi (IANS): As the farmers’ agitation entered the seventh day on Wednesday, over a dozen kabaddi players, wrestlers and singers from Punjab joined the protest, extending their support to more than 32 farmers unions leading thousands of protestors. The players, wrestlers and popular Punjabi singer Ravinder Grewal were part of the farmers’ sit-in at Singhu border on the Delhi-Chandigarh route where the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and other farmers unions have been protesting since November 26. They have come out in support of the farmers agitating against the three contentious

farm bills passed in September during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. A group of 10 women kabaddi

players from Punjab said they are supporting the farmers as their demands were not accepted by the Central govern-

Centre wanted Delhi government to convert 9 stadiums into jail for farmers: Kejriwal New Delhi (IANS): Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday accused the Central government of pressuring his government to convert nine Delhi stadiums into jail as part of its “fool-proof ’ plan to put agitating farmers there when they moved towards Delhi from Punjab and Haryana last week. The Chief Minister revealed this while addressing a digital press conference here, saying his refusal to convert the nine stadiums in Delhi into jails has “upset the Centre”. “Since the time we refused to convert the nine stadiums in Delhi into temporary jails, the Central government is very upset with me. They had a fool-proof plan of putting the farmers into these jails as soon as the farmers reach

Delhi,” Kejriwal said. The Chief Minister said that he was put under a lot of “pressure to convert these stadiums into jails, and received several calls from people”. “But there are some moments in life when you listen to your own conscience without caring about the results.”

ment despite protesting in the state for the last three months. “More than three-month long farmers’ protest did not have the desired impact so they marched to Delhi. Sports progress is dependent on farmers’ progress. If a farmer does not progress, how will sports progress,” leader of the kabaddi team, Surjit Kaur, told IANS. Kaur said her team is worldclass and the players have participated in various competitions in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. The women players appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the three “anti-

farmer” laws and accept the farmers’ demands. “Farmers will continue their struggle. They will not return without reaching a settlement. We will continue the agitation until the government agrees to the farmers’ demands.” As soon as Punjabi singer Grewal joined the protest on Wednesday afternoon, his fans clicked selfies on their mobile phones. Meanwhile, a group of wrestlers were busy in distributing ‘langar’ -- a service in Sikhism to provide free meals to all without discriminating on the basis of religion. Wrestler Pradeep Kumar, who along with many of his com-

panions was busy in distributing langar, told IANS that they have been participating in the protest from the day when farmers from Punjab reached Singhu border. “We distributed food to the protestors during the day and participated in the protest. The Central government should accept the farmers’ demands,” Kumar said. Thousands of farmers are gathered at the Singhu and Tikri borders for the last seven days. Hundreds of protesting farmers have blocked other Delhi border points like Ghazipur on the Delhi-Ghaziabad route and Chilla on the DelhiNoida road.

Farmers perform ‘puja’ at Ghazipur border, lash out at Modi govt Ghazipur (IANS): The Modi government’s latest attempts to persuade the farmers agitating at the DelhiHaryana-UP borders for the last seven days against the three Union farm laws, failed to achieve a breakthrough. The agitating farmers performed a ‘havan’ at the Ghazipur-Ghaziabad (Delhi-UP) border on Wednesday morning and expressed their anger against the Modi government. The latest round of talks between the Centre and the farmers organisations failed to reach a consensus on Tuesday. The farmers prayed for wisdom to prevail on the Union government. This special puja was organised praying for a calm and peaceful atmosphere at the border. A large number of farmers under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) are protesting against the three Union farm laws at the Ghazipur border. A farmer present at the ‘havan’ told IANS, “We want peace to prevail among all of us, all the demands made by our farmer brothers must be accepted by the Centre. Wisdom must prevail upon the Modi government about these laws. This is the reason we are conducting a puja.” Alok Solanki, a young farmer leader of the BKU, told IANS, “The Modi government is not listening to the farmers’ demands. We are performing a puja praying

to bestow wisdom on the politicians.” On Tuesday, the three-hour-long talks between the Central government and 35 farmers organisations failed to achieve a breakthrough. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Somprakash were present at this meeting with the farmers groups. The farmers plan to continue their protests at the Tikri, Singhu, Chilla and Ghazipur borders against the farm laws.

Punjabi singers lend voice to farmers’ ‘stir’

Chandigarh (IANS): A host of Punjabi singers have lent their voice to the farmers’ struggle against the new agricultural laws that will ‘ruin’ economy and ‘snatch’ their lands. Also a few of them are camping at the protest site to belt out their latest ‘revolutionary’ songs. The latest video song ‘Pecha’, sung by Sufi singer Kanwar Grewal and Haraf Cheema, has been making waves on YouTube since November 21. This song has gotten 2.5 million views till date. “Khich le jatta khich tayari pecha pai gaya Centre naal (Come on farmer be ready, now it’s a direct confrontation with Centre),” go the lyrics of their song. They asked the farmers to head towards Delhi as the new laws will ruin them and ‘your’ future generations will not forgive ‘you’. With an appeal to the farmers to reach Delhi in hordes, the song says, “Pind pind cho bharo tralliangal nahi banni Canters naal (People from village to village should move on tractor-trailers towards Delhi as small Canters will not serve any purpose).” In fact, Grewal himself was seen camping amidst protesters on the borders of Delhi and firing them up at the protest venues. His previous solo song ‘Ailaan’, released ahead of the farmers marching towards Delhi, talks about the farmer march towards Delhi that comprises octogenarian farmers. “Tenu Delhi eh ekath pareshaan karuga tere fayede nalo jyada nuksaan karuga, par faslan da faisla kisan karuga (Delhi, this gathering will bother you, will hurt you, but the farmer will decide the price of his crops),” go the lyrics. Joining the chorus, Canada-based singer Elly Mangat’s song ‘Baghi Kisan’ or a revolutionary farmer invokes Sikh general Baghel Singh who led Sikh troops along with Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and Jassa Singh Ramgarhia and conquered Delhi by defeating Mughal emperor Shah Alam II in 1783. Controversial singer Shubhdeep Singh, alias Sidhu Moosewala, who booked for allegedly promoting gun culture and violence through a song titled ‘Panj golian’ (five bullets), is also rubbing shoulders these days with protesting farmers on the Delhi borders. “I have come here to lend my support to Punjabi brothers and sisters who have been forced to spend their days and nights under the sky to oppose the legislations,” Moosewala told the media on Tuesday. In his speeches, he is saying the Punjabis believe in the philosophy of the first Sikh master, Guru Nanak Dev. “Here there is no Hindu, no Sikh and no Muslim. Our biggest religion is ‘roti’ and they are trying to snatch it from us. By sinking all differences, we are all here to fight in a united way,” he said, appealing to the gathering from Punjab and Haryana to take up their cause to the conclusion in a peaceful manner. Anmol Gagan Maan’s song ‘Kisaan vs Rajneeti’ is hogging the limelight on YouTube by getting over 400,000 views.

Her song says the farmer holds a spade on his shoulder. “If the guns come, your politics will be held responsible for this.” Jass Bajwa’s song ‘Jatta Takda Ho Ja’ says the Centre has always betrayed the farmers and asks the farmers to unite. “I am a singer later. First, I am a farmer,” said Resham Singh Anmol. “I am also the son of a farmer,” added singer Jasbir Jassi. Babbu Maan’s song ‘Mandian ch Jatt Rulda’ is quite popular as he tries to portray the darker side of the farming -- spike in suicide by debt-ridden farmers. Anguish over the purported remark of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar that the farmers’ has a Khalistani link, popular

singer Diljit Dosanjh comes in the support of the farmers. “We are farmers, we are not terrorists,” tweeted Dosanjh alongside a cartoon of

protesting farmers. Posting pictures of farmers, rapper Honey Singh says, “My prayers with farmers Waheguru Meher karan!!”

Kejriwal undermined farmers by notifying farm law: Punjab Chief Minister Chandigarh (IANS): In a scathing response to his Delhi counterpart’s attack on him over the farmers’ issue, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday lashed out at Arvind Kejriwal for stooping to a low level of politics and indulging in brazen double-speak in a desperate bid to wriggle out of his own failure to protect the interests of the farming community. Slamming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief for undermining the farmers’ fight by notifying one of the central laws in Delhi, Amarinder Singh asked Kejriwal, “Why did you not stand against the Centre by passing your own state legislations like we did in Punjab?” The Chief Minister trashed Kejriwal’s assertion that states are helpless against the Central farm laws, and said it is clear that the

AAP leader did not even want to try to fight the draconian legislations. “Why else did he not bring any legislation in the state assembly to at least try and negate some of the ill-effects of the Central laws,” asked Amarinder Singh. Instead of just meekly notifying the Central laws, Kejriwal could have tried to make some effort to counter them and protect the rights of the farmers, Amarinder Singh said in a statement. As for the legality of the Punjab state amendment bills, the Chief Minister pointed out that these are valid under the Constitution and have a strong precedent in the bills that were passed by the Gujarat government in 2015 under Article 254 (II) of the Constitution to oppose the Centre’s land acquisition laws.

Former sportspersons of Punjab to return medals on December 5 Chandigarh (IANS): Joining the chorus backing the agitating farmers, three former Punjab sportspersons, all belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have announced to return their awards in protest against the use of police force during the farmers’ protests, including Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee wrestler Kartar Singh, Arjuna awardee basketball player Sajjan Singh Cheema and Arjuna awardee hockey player Rajbir Kaur. They announced that they will proceed to Delhi on December 5 to place the awards outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Cheema, who represented India at the 1982 Asian Games, said: “We are the children of farmers. They have been holding peaceful agitation for the last several months. When they were heading to Delhi, why water cannons and tear gas shells were used on them?” Kartar Singh, who has retired as Inspector General from Punjab Police, said, “If farmers do not want such laws, then why is the Central government imposing them?” Kartar Singh had won the gold in the 1978 Asian Games held in Bangkok and the 1986 Asian Games held in Seoul. He also won a

Kartar Singh

silver in the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi. The trio, including Kaur, the only Indian women’s hockey player who represented the country in four consecutive Asian Games in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994, had joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2016. Also, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa also announced that he will return the Padma Bhushan conferred on him in 2019.

In fact, the then President Pranab Mukherjee had cleared the Gujarat bills, he added. Reacting to Kejriwal’s comment on the Centre being angry with him because his government did not allow Delhi’s stadia to be used as jails for the farmers, Amarinder Singh said it is quite apparent that the AAP leader, whose survival depends on the Central government, is more worried about angering the latter than about the plight of the farmers. The Chief Minister also lambasted Kejriwal for misleading the people on the committee formed by the Central government last year on agricultural reforms. Not once were these black laws discussed or even mentioned in the committee, he reiterated, castigating the Delhi Chief Minister for indulging in falsehoods and dirty politics

while pretending to be opposing any politicking on the farmers’ issue. Dubbing Kejriwal’s latest statement attacking him (Amarinder) and appealing to the Centre to address the farmers’ concerns as mere hogwash, the Punjab Chief Minister said the AAP leader’s actions have thoroughly exposed the hollowness of his remarks. It is evident that Kejriwal is only playing to the sentiments of the farmers now because his party has completely lost the political narrative in Punjab, where AAP has its eyes on the 2022 Assembly polls, Amarinder Singh added. “The farmers are not taken in by your crocodile tears,” he said.

Amarinder urges Centre to resolve farmers’ issue, says nothing in his hand New Delhi (IANS): With the farmers’ protests escalating day-by-day, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday said ‘there was nothing for him to resolve’. He urged the Centre, which is holding discussions with the farmer representatives, to resolve the issue quickly. Singh’s statement comes after he discussed the farmers’ issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in about half-an-hour meeting. The meeting happened before the fourth round of talks between the Central government and over 34 farmer union leaders started at the Vigyan Bhawan around 12.30 p.m. The Punjab Chief Minister told reporters after the meeting that he requested Shah to “resolve the issue as it was adversely impacting the state’s economy and also posed a serious danger to the national security”. Reiterating Punjab’s position seeking early resolution of the deadlock, Singh also urged Shah to “rethink its stand on the legislations while appealing to the farmers to

find an early solution to the problem”. “The problem needs to be solved quickly,” the Punjab Chief Minister stressed during the crucial meeting with Shah. In a brief interaction with the media, Singh said “While he and his government were not involved in the mediation in any way, and the matter had to be resolved between the Centre and the farmers and an early resolution was vital in the interest of both Punjab and the country”. Stressing the need to protect the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and continue

Parkash Singh Badal returns Padma award, says government betrayed farmers

with the APMC based Mandi system, the Chief Minister urged Shah to listen to the farmers with an “open mind” to resolve the standoff quickly so that the farmers from Punjab and other states, including a large number of women, can return to their homes. A solution has to be found at the earliest, Singh said, adding that he had come to meet the Union Home Minister to reiterate Punjab’s stand on the “imbroglio” between the farmers and the Central government, as well as the need to secure the future of the farming community and agriculture. Singh met Shah as the ongoing farmers protest entered eighth straight day on Thursday with thousands of farmers huddled at Delhi’s different borders since November 26 demanding to repeal three farm laws enacted in September during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Parkash Singh Badal “Tragically, no such sensitivity towards the farmers’ pain and anger is visible here. I am sure that as the first Citizen of our great country and a conscientious public figure, you would be fully aware and perhaps as deeply concerned about these developments as I have been. “Even before these Acts were passed, the poor farmers had already been in the grip of sever crisis throughout the country. Agricul-

ture was never a lucrative profession in our country as the costs of agricultural inputs had been rising steeply with while there has been just meager hike or no hike on the prices of agricultural produce,” said Badal, who himself is a farmer. “But in recent years, the crisis deepened with farmers unable to meet the rising costs of inputs and were driven to draw unbearable loans just to be able to keep feeding their families. “When farm friendly parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal pleaded for debt relief to farmers in overall national interest, they were mocked. It was cynically suggested that farmers take loans just for ostentatious lifestyle. “This cruel cynicism and malice against the farmers did not stop even when thousands of farmers in this country were and are being driven to take their own lives in a phenomenon called farmer suicides. “Isn’t it amazing and unjust that lakhs of crores of corporate loans are waived off

with just a single thoughtless stroke of the governmental pen. But no one has ever thought of even subsiding the farm debts, forget a complete waiver. Instead, the country chose to let its ‘annadata’ die.” Against this background, Badal said, the ‘black’ laws now implemented by the government have come as the proverbial last nail in the coffin of the country’s ‘annadata’. “The farmers are out on the streets battling police batons, tear gas shells and water cannons even as their sources of livelihood dry up. They have come to the national capital from all over the country, leaving their fields, crops and even their families and travelled long distances -- thousands of kilometers in some cases -- to get the attention of their own government. “They have shown incredible and unprecedented restraint, maturity and responsibility in keeping their protests totally peaceful and democratic. But conspiracies and vicious propaganda are unleashed to paint this peaceful struggle as anti-national.”

SINCE 1982

Chandigarh (IANS): Expressing solidarity with the agitating farmers over the Centre’s farm laws, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patron Parkash Singh Badal, 91, on Thursday returned his Padma Vibhushan award in protest against “the betrayal of the farmers by the government”. Badal, in a missive to President Ram Nath Kovind, said he was returning the award due to “the shocking indifference and contempt with which the government was treating the ongoing peaceful and democratic agitation of the farmers against the three farm acts”. The Akali stalwart had received the country’s second-highest civilian honour in 2015. The letter further says, “When the government of India had brought the ordinances, assurances were given that the farmers’ apprehensions on these legislations would be addressed to their satisfaction while bringing the relevant Bills and subsequently the Acts. “Trusting these assurances, I even appealed to the farmers to believe the government’s word. But I was shocked when the government simply went back on its word.” “That was the most painful and embarrassing moment in my long political career. I just cannot put in words the emotional stress which I have been going through since then. I have truly begun to wonder why has the government of the country become so heartless, so cynical and so ungrateful towards the farmers,” said the former Punjab Chief Minister. “While writing this letter to you, I am conscious that I address myself to a President who presides over the destiny of a population 70 per cent of whom are farmers. For over 70 years, these farmers have been serving the country as its ‘annadata’ with the most selfless and self-effacing humility. “I hardly need repeat that the country owes a huge and almost undue debt to them. When the country faced hunger and humiliation in the sixties, having to beg for food in world capitals, the government turned to the farmers to pull it out of starvation. “The farmer responded so heartily that in a matter of three years, he turned the country from a food-begging to a food exporting country. The tide was turned principally by Punjab with Green Revolution. But in the process, he sacrificed the only two natural assets he had: soil fertility and water,” he wrote. “Today however, the same farmer finds himself forced to wage bitter struggles just to secure his fundamental right to live. The three Acts fell as bolts from the blue on the already beleaguered peasantry of the country. “Now, the spectacle of hundreds of thousands of farmers crying out for justice in one voice in the national capital would have moved any other nation or its government.

Modi invites Boris Johnson as Republic Day chief guest New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally invited UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2021. The invitation was extended by Modi to Johnson during their phone conversation on November 27, sources said. It is after a gap of 27 years that a UK Prime Minister will be the chief guest at India’s 70th Republic Day next month. John Major was the

last British Prime Minister to attend the Republic Day parade in New Delhi in 1993. The government is yet to confirm Johnson’s visit. However, Prime Minister Modi hinted in a tweet on November 27 that India-UK are embarking on an ambitious partnership. “We agreed to work towards a quantum leap in our cooperation in all areas - trade and investments, defence and security, climate change and fighting Covid-19,” Modi

had tweeted. The invitation from Modi is tactical and timely as the transition period for Brexit ends on December 31 and it’s almost certain that the UK will go for a ‘hard Brexit’ - a clean break from Europe which will entail Britain giving up membership of the EU’s single market, allowing it to trade freely with EU members without restrictions. The hard Brexit is likely to disrupt UK’s economy,

which even after four years of the Brexit vote, is for most practical purposes still functioning as part of the EU. To reduce the adverse effects of the economic disruption, the UK has been looking for trading opportunities elsewhere. Prime Minister Johnson has offered a free trade agreement with India, given its huge market. Johnson’s visit to New Delhi next month will be significant for trade negotiations between the two countries.

way itself in which CPI leaders said that Modi government is not only “anti-farmers” and “anti-workers” but is also “anti-people”. The Modi government is only worried about industrialists and not about the normal people, they said adding that

if “the Centre fails to withdraw to take its anti-farmers laws back, then, a massive fight will start”. The protest, led by Akhil Bharatiya Kisaan Sabha state Joint Secretary Sanjay Madhav, was attended by many political parties, labor organisations

and social organizations including the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Communist Party of India, the Samajwadi Party, the CITU, the AITUC, the Mazdoor Union and many more from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

Vikas Dubey Lucknow (IANS): A special investigation team (SIT) probing the Vikas Dubey encounter case has recommended a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the slain gangster’s property worth Rs 1,500 million, amassed by Dubey and his aides. Dubey was shot dead by the Special Task Force (STF) in an encounter on July 10 after he and his men ambushed and slaughtered eight policemen on July 3 in Bikru village. The SIT, headed by Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Bhoosreddy, was set up to probe different aspects of the Bikru case. The SIT had earlier recommended action against 90 officials, including 41 policemen, and other government employees from rural development, food and revenue departments for allegedly helping the gangster. A government spokesman said, “While recommending an ED probe into the gangster’s property, SIT has also recommended registration of FIRs against all those officials who had helped Dubey and his gang in the past many years.” He said the SIT report also recommended that these officials be given punishment, ranging from severe to mild, for remaining in constant touch with Dubey and helping him. According to the official, the report, which was submitted in October, said the officials did not attend to complaints against the gangster and issued licensed weapons, SIM cards and passports to him and his gang on the basis of fake documents and false details. The SIT, in its 3,500-page report, has recommended strict action against officials who had helped the gang procure licensed weapons and ammunition. The state government had earlier suspended senior IPS officer of DIG rank Anant Deo Tiwari after the SIT probe pointed to a nexus between Dubey and the police. Deo was SSP of Kanpur for several months before being transferred as deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Special task Force (STF) only a few days before the ambush.
