Manjinder Gill of Brampton arrested after seizure of about 40 kg of suspected cocaine
Thirty packages of suspected cocaine seized by the CBSA. THE Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Southern Ontario Region, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Windsor Detachment, on Monday announced the seizure of 30 bricks of suspected cocaine at the Ambassador Bridge and the arrest of a Brampton, Ontario, resident. On December 15, a lone male driving a tractor trailer arrived at the Ambassador Bridge Commercial Operations in Windsor, Ontario, and was referred for a secondary inspection. During the examination, border services officers discovered 30 packages of suspected cocaine, weighing an approximate total of 40 kilograms. The CBSA arrested the driver and seized the suspected cocaine. The RCMP attended and took custody of the driver as
well as the evidence. The RCMP charged Manjinder Gill, 44, with importation of a controlled substance, and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Gill is in custody and awaiting a bail hearing. The investigation is ongoing. From January 1 to December 17, 2019, the CBSA, Southern Ontario Region, intercepted and seized over 395 kilograms of suspected cocaine. If you have information about suspicious cross-border activity, contact the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060. If you have information on suspicious or criminal activities, contact your local police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Surrey’s Eric Basran wins at Canadian Qualification in Montreal ERIC Basran of Surrey will be participating in the American Olympic Qualification event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from March 26-April 3 as well as the World Olympic Qualification event in Paris, France, from May 13-24 for a chance to earn a spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This comes after Eric defeated Jean Gardy Francois of Quebec last week on Thursday and Leo Kamara of Ontario the following day in his 57 kg weight category – both wins were unanimous at the 2019 Canadian Qualification in Montreal. Brampton: Amarjit Lamba charged with second-degree murder in death of Balvinder Bains
ON Wednesday, December 25, just before 11 p.m., Peel Regional Police were made aware of a fail to remain collision that occurred on Sunny Meadow Boulevard. A 51-year-old man from Brampton identified as Balvinder Bains was located in life-threatening condition and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died as a
result of the injuries he sustained. Investigators from the Major Collision Bureau attended the scene and began their investigation into the incident. During the early part of their investigation, information was obtained that led to the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau taking charge of the investigation. On Thursday, December 26, offi-
cers located the vehicle involved in this incident and a short time later the suspect, a 53-year-old man from Brampton, identified as Amarjit Lamba, was taken into custody for second-degree murder. He will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Friday, December 27 in answer to the charge.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information is asked to contact investigators with the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3205. Surrey protest against India’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act DOZENS of people came together on Sunday to denounce the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India at a rally organized in Surrey. According to the protestors, the CAA is a divisive law that welcomes only non-Muslim refugees from the Muslim-dominated countries neighbouring India. Aimed at polarizing the Hindu majority against Muslims by excluding Muslim refugees from these countries, CAA has sparked angry protests all over India, especially from those who feel that it violates the Indian constitution, which is based on the principle
of secularism that does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion. More than 20 people have died during violent demonstrations while many opponents have been arrested.

The Surrey rally organized by Indians Abroad for Pluralist India (IAPI) began with a moment of silence for those who died during protests. The participants raised slogans against the CAA and the BJP government. They held signs in support of secularism and diversity. Among the speakers was anti-racism activist and educator Annie Ohana, who has consistently been raising her voice against human rights violations anywhere in the world. She had also spoken at an antiCAA rally held outside the Indian Consulate General in Vancouver on Friday.
Others who spoke at the Surrey rally included Sikh activists Gian Singh Gill and Kulwinder Singh, besides Muslim activists Itrath Syed, Furuqan Gehllen and Dawood Ismail, and Hindu
interfaith chaplain Arun Chatterjee. Niovi Patsicakis from Global Peace Alliance and leftist activists Prabhjot Kaur Hundal, Joseph Theriault and Rawait Singh also addressed the gathering.

Oppal says he has to see if Surrey Policing Transition Report meets required standards
WALLY Oppal, chair of the joint transition committee for the formation of a Surrey police force, told The VOICE on Tuesday that he will go through the whole Surrey Policing Transition Report that the Provincial Municipal Policing Transition Study Committee has forwarded to him “to see whether or not it meets the standards that are required to move on to the next step.” Oppal, who was attorney general and a BC Court of Appeal judge, added that it was going to take him a while to determine whether or not the report passes muster because it’s over 450 pages. On Monday Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum had announced that he was “very pleased that the members
of the committee achieved consensus on the report” that was forwarded to Oppal. He added: “They have done a superb job. I very much appreciate the cooperation of the RCMP and other stakeholders in completing a very comprehensive report. All next steps on the transition will be the responsibility of the Surrey Police Board.” The City said it looks forward to working with the Province, the federal government and the leadership of the RCMP to ensure a smooth and orderly transition to the Surrey Police Department. But Oppal pointed out a slew of issues that need to be resolved first. He pointed out to this newspaper: “The report contains matters such as

Accused in homicides of Jagvir Malhi and Randeep Kang ‘connected to Brothers Keepers’
THE VOICE last weekend in an update to our front-page story titled “Arrest made in homicides of Jagvir Malhi and Randeep Kang,” reported on our website voiceonline.com that according to our police sources, the accused in the two murders is ‘connected to Brothers Keepers’ crime group. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced on December 20 that it had arrested 21-year-old Tyrel Hieu Nguyen Quesnelle in Edmonton, Alberta, for his alleged involvement in the two murders. The BC Prosecution Service approved first-degree murder charges against him. Kang, 27, was shot and killed in Surrey on the night of October 27, 2017, and his brother was also injured in the shooting. Malhi, 19, was shot and killed in Abbotsford on November
12, 2018. IHIT announced on December 6 that he was an innocent victim and was not involved in gangs. “However, there were some individuals in his life that were involved in the Lower Mainland gang conflict,” said IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang. After months of investigation, IHIT linked both incidents and determined they were connected to the same individual. Back in August 2018, Vancouver Police told the media “the Kang group is composed of members of the Kang family, including Sameet Kang, Gary Kang, Randy Kang (deceased), their parents, and other close associates.” They said: “The Kang Group is closely aligned with the Red Scorpions Gang, specifically with Jamie Bacon and Kyle Latimer. It’s believed they share common interests in drug lines,

The Kang / Latimer Group has been in conflict with multiple groups over the past 18 months and their allegiances remain fluid and ever-changing.” On the night of December 1 Verron Nand, 21, was shot and killed in Surrey. He was found dead on the ground with gunshot wounds along with a second male victim who survived. IHIT had said that both men were known to police. Police sources confirmed to The VOICE that Nand was a member of Brothers Keepers crime group. According to a gang expert, the Brothers Keepers are almost exclusively South Asian and have been around for a couple of years. They have been in conflict with other crime groups, including the Red Scorpions.
A man is in custody after three firearms were seized following a traffic stop by the Surrey RCMP in the Cloverdale area. On December 13, Surrey RCMP attempted a traffic stop with a vehicle in the vicinity of 184A Street and 58th Avenue. The vehicle failed to stop; however, police were able to note the vehicle’s description and obtain a license plate. On December 18, police spotted the same vehicle in the 18600-block of Fraser Highway. Concerned that the driver may attempt to evade police, officers blocked the vehicle while it was parked, preventing it from driving away. The driver of the vehicle, a 37-year-old man, attempted to flee on foot, but following a brief pursuit, he

was arrested and taken into custody. Upon further investigation of the vehicle, officers located and seized three firearms, stolen property and suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine. The suspect has been remanded into custody while the investigation is ongoing. “This is an example of heads-up policing that really came down to an observant officer spotting a suspect vehicle and diligently executing their public safety responsibility,” said Staff-Sgt. Winston Shorey. “The coordinated effort, which involved the Surrey RCMP Youth Section and Community Response Unit, led to the arrest of a suspect and removal of three firearms from the street.”

As Uber’s operation in Germany is suspended, pressure mounts for BC solution for ride-sharing services THE California-based Uber Technologies has received yet another jolt with a court ruling to suspend the ridesharing service’s operation in Germany. A news report said that a regional court in Frankfurt has banned the company from sending ride-hailing requests to rental car companies via its app. The court found mul-
tiple competition violations following a legal challenge by a German taxi association. Only last month, Uber London Limited was found not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence. Transport for London (TfL) had identified a pattern of failures by the company including several breaches
that placed passengers and their safety at risk. The TfL said that despite addressing some of these issues, it did not have confidence that similar issues will not reoccur in the future. And earlier this month, Uber received 235 reports of a rape occurring during a ride in the United States last year — an average of four a
week., according to a company review. These sexual assaults have led to a flood of lawsuits from riders who were reportedly sexually assaulted by Uber drivers. And in Colombia, according to a news report, a judge has ordered Uber to suspend its ride-hailing business after a technology platform presented a lawsuit claiming
the company was providing the service through unfair competition. Uber has appealed the decision. With one setback after another for Uber, there is increasing doubt about Uber fitting into the BC market. There is an increasing demand to have BC solutions for ride-sharing with proper controls and fairness.
There is also the question of profits and taxes remaining in B.C. The Province needs to take a good, hard look at companies like Uber. BC Liberals do not care what happens to British Columbians as long as their pockets are filled by lavish corporate donations. The money laundering scandals in casinos proves that point.

B.C. families saved thousands in 2019, says government
MORE money is back in the pockets of British Columbians in 2019, says the government, because of its initiatives to make life more affordable for people. Tens of thousands of families were helped with lower child care costs, while Medical Service Plan (MSP) fees were lowered by 50% and will be eliminated beginning in the new year. People also continued to save money on lower-cost ferry trips and eliminated bridge tolls. “For too long, people saw their bills going
up and they found it harder to make ends meet. We’re proud of the different choices we’ve made to lower costs for working families and help everyone in B.C. get ahead, not just the few at the very top,” said Premier John Horgan on Friday. “But this is only the beginning. British Columbians have seen us roll up our sleeves to clean up messes left behind by the previous government, and we’re going to keep building a better future, together.” The government saved families money in

Better access to improved health-care services in 2019, government says
THE Province said on Monday that it delivered on its promise to provide faster access to improved health-care services closer to home in 2019. Government put people first with long overdue investments in more doctors and nurses, building new hospitals and care centres, and reducing wait times. “Our whole province benefits when people are healthy and able to learn, work or raise a family in their community,” said Premier John Horgan. “For 16 years under the old government, people were forced to wait longer to get less care. Those problems can’t be fixed overnight, but we’re proud to be investing to make sure more people can access the care they need, when and where they need it. Our government will never stop working to deliver a stronger public-health system that gives your family peace of mind and puts people first.” The government is providing better, faster health care to
people around the province by: * increasing access to diagnostics, which resulted in about 44,000 more MRIs in 2018-19 than the previous year, exceeding the original target; * ensuring seniors get better care through an investment of more than $1 billion over three years in primary care, home health, long-term care, assisted living and respite services; * opening the Surrey Mental Health and Substance Use Urgent Care Response Centre, providing easy-to-access services where people receive help fast in a welcoming environment; and * launching A Pathway to Hope, laying out a 10-year vision for mental health and addictions care that gets people the services they need in order to tackle problems early on and support their well-being. British Columbians are also benefiting from investments in new and modernized hospitals:
* In total, 13 new major health capital projects are underway or complete following years of inaction and delays from the previous government. * Progress continues on a second hospital for Surrey to meet the growing demand in B.C.’s fastest-growing community. * Quesnel will be home to a new emergency department and intensive care unit with redevelopment of the G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital. * Two new patient care towers and upgrades at Burnaby Hospital will give residents faster access to care. In 2019, there were more options to seek medical attention than ever before: * Over 82,000 patients have already benefited from urgent primary care centres, which connect people who don’t have a family doctor to the care they need. * Open late and on weekends, urgent and primary care centres can help people with conditions such as flulike symptoms, headaches
and earaches, minor cuts and sprains. * Urgent primary care centres are now open in Surrey, Langford, Kamloops, Quesnel, Prince George, Nanaimo, Vernon, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, East Vancouver, Burnaby and Vancouver, with centres opening soon in Kelowna and Victoria. Port Coquitlam incident reported to Independent Investigations Office
THE RCMP announced on Monday that they had notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of Sunday’s incident where a man went into medical distress after being arrested and later died. On December 22, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Coquitlam RCMP attended a residence as part of follow-up investigation. While there, they inquired about a man who had a number of warrants for his arrest. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., a member of the Coquitlam Traffic Unit was working laser enforcement and saw a man run out of a wooded area into traffic on the Mary Hill by-pass and was almost struck. Doug Donaldson Communities have identified a variety of support services and programs they will deliver to impacted mill workers and their families, including employment workshops and training, counselling services and support for food banks. “Our government is working hard to make sure the supports are in place for contractors, workers and communities,â€? said Ravi Kahlon, Parliamentary Secretary for Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “For me, this situation is very personal, having experienced firsthand the challenges families face when a local mill closes or reduces shifts. I understand the struggles many are facing in these communities.â€?
CBC defends cutting Trump scene from movie Ottawa (IANS): Canada’s national broadcaster CBC has defended deleting a scene featuring US President Donald Trump from the 1992 film “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, said it had been trimmed to make way for commercials, it was reported on Friday. In a statement on T h u r s d a y, CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said the edits on the eight minutes of the 120-minute film were made in 2014, before Trump was elected Donald Trump as President, and were not politically motivated, the BBC reported. In the uncut version, Trump is briefly seen in a scene at New York’s Plaza Hotel, when Macaulay Culkin’s character Kevin asks him for directions. Trump was the hotel’s owner at the time. The edited film was shown by CBC earlier this month, prompting criticism from Trump’s supporters. His son Donald Trump Jr tweeted a link to a story on Thursday that called the edit “pathetic. On Thursday night, President Trump tweeted that “the movie will never be the same! (just kidding), reports the BBC. In a reference to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and well-documented disagreements between the two leaders on major policy issues, Trump added: “I guess Justin T doesn’t much like my making him pay up on Nato or trade. During a video conference call to US troops overseas on Christmas Eve, the President had described the movie as “a big Christmas hit. Trump has made a number of cameo appearances in films, including “Zoolander and “Ghosts Can’t Do It.

With the help of the kind-hearted people across Surrey, more than $9,400 in cash donations and 1,800 toys were collected to make the holidays a little brighter for sick children and their families. “Thank you to everyone who donated so generously,” said Constable Mark Peterse. “We were overwhelmed by the tremendous response by the community.” Surrey RCMP officers continued the season of giving by delivering over 3,800 pounds of food and over $5,700 cash to local food banks and Christmas hamper programs as part of the detachment’s annual “Pack the Police Car” events. This year’s events were held at five Save on Foods locations across Surrey between November 23 and December 19. The donations collected will help people in need in the community. “Time and time again, our community has shown its generosity,” said Community Services Officer, Superintendent Shawn Gill. “On behalf of Surrey RCMP, thank you to everyone who contributed to helping those in need this holiday season.” For more information or to donate, visit the websites for the Surrey Food Bank, Sources Food Bank and Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program. New York (IANS): Getting the recommended amount of physical activity is linked to a reduced risk of seven types of cancer, researchers have found. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, analysed data from more than 750,000 adults in the United States, Europe and Australia and found that recommended amounts of physical activity correlated with lower risks of seven types of cancer. “Physical activity guidelines have largely been based on their impact on chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” said researcher Alpa Patel from the American Cancer Society. They found engaging in recommended amounts of activity (7.5 to 15 MET hours/week) was associated with a statistically significant lower risk of seven of the 15 cancer types studied, with the reduction increasing with more MET hours. Physical activity was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer in men (eight per cent for 7.5 MET hours/week; 14 per cent for 15 MET hours/ week), female breast cancer (6-10 per cent), endometrial cancer (10-18 per cent), kidney cancer (11-17 per cent), myeloma (14-19 per cent), liver cancer (18-27 per cent), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (11 -18 per cent in women).

Residents hand-painted each bag and, based on one resident’s recommendation, included a list of shelters in the Lower Mainland and a personalized Christmas card. Staff and a center chaplain hand-delivered the bags to Surrey Nightshift Min-

requesting that “anyone with love in their heart this holiday season to share a little of it with members of the homeless community,” residents created 100 personalized Christmas cards. These were presented to her at the centre, where she visited the Right Living community to thank the residents in person.

China celebrates 10th anniversary of ‘3 Idiots’
Beijing (IANS): “3 Idiots”, an Indian Hindi-language comedy film, has celebrated its 10th anniversary in China with the fans of the movie taking to Twitter to hail it as the “Film of the Century”. The film tells the story of two adults who head out on a trip to find their extraordinary college friend who used to encourage them to pursue careers they were really passionate about back when they were younger. Debuting in Chinese mainland cinemas two years after its Indian release, the film may not have been a box-office winner, but it received high praise from audiences. On Chinese media review platform Douban, the film has a 9.2/10 based on 1.18 million user reviews - the 13th highest-rated film on the platform, the Global Times reported. “3 Idiots” is also notable because it introduced Indian actor Aamir Khan, the hero of the film, to Chinese audiences. After “3 Idiots”, he would go on to act in several other impressive films such as “P.K.” in 2014, “Dangal” in 2016 and “Secret Superstar” in 2018. The actor-director posted a video on Sina Weibo on Wednesday to extend his gratitude to his Chinese fans for loving and admiring the film. “In my wildest dreams, I haven’t thought that people in China would see my film and would like the film and it’ll be the start of our relationship between me and the audience in China,” Khan said in the video. “I love Three Idiots so much that I recommend it to nearly everyone I know,” Zhao Hongyu, a 29-year-old middle school teacher told the Global Times. Having watched Khan’s other films, Zhao said she admires the star for his sincerity and determination in tackling tough issues. “Khan’s films usually focus on social issues. For example, ‘3 Idiots’ criticized India’s exam-oriented education system and ‘Dangal’ drew audiences’ attention toward gender equality,” Zhao said. Lin Xi, a veteran film critic, commended Khan
Musharraf challenges death sentence
Islamabad (IANS): Former Pakistan President and Army Chief Pervez Musharraf on Friday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court challenging the death sentence handed to him by a special court in a high treason case. The Islamabad special court verdict on December 17 led to an unprecedented confrontation between the judiciary and military in Pakistan, especially after the details and nature of death sentence became public. As per the judgement, if found dead, before he is hanged, Musharraf’s corpse is to be dragged to a public square near the Pakistan Parliament House. Though Musharraf is in self-imposed exile in Dubai and undergoing treatment for some critical ailments, his advocate Azhar Siddique on Friday filed an 86-page petition, on his behalf, Pakistan media reported on Friday. The petition challenged the verdict and the gruesome nature of death sentence handed to Musharraf. Lashing out at the judiciary, the former Army Chief in his petition said, the special court “has crossed all religious moral, civil and constitutional limits, while ruthlessly, irreligiously, unlawfully, unrealistically awarding a debilitating, humiliating, unprecedented sentence against the dignity of a person.” Musharraf in his petition has pleaded that the special court had “rapidly and hurriedly wrapped up the trial” and handed capital punishment without giving him an opportunity to be examined. “The importance of examining the accused in a criminal trial is enormous and any lapse, failure or omission to fulfil this requirement adversely affects the prosecution case. A criminal trial cannot simply complete without adhering to this mandatory legal requirement,” his lawyer said. The former dictator has said that the court did not take into consideration that he had done nothing “detrimental to national interest”. Earlier this month, the former President had filed an application in the Lahore High Court, appealing to stop the special court from sentencing him in absentia. Teaching kids to give back during the holidays (NC) We all know the holidays are about more than just presents and parties, but it can be hard putting this into practice and passing this idea on to your kids. Fortunately, there are some simple ways you can educate them on the true spirit of the season:
Set the example. Children are like little mirrors, reflecting what they see. So, it’s up to the parents and adults in their lives to show the importance of giving back especially at this time of year. Get the family together to volunteer at an animal shelter, make an extra effort to visit that relative who lives alone or sponsor a nice dinner for a local
family in need.
Pick gifts carefully. Forget the latest trendy gadgets or toys, and introduce your kids to the idea of gifts that give back to others. Start with something they can relate to, like supporting young students with meals, library books, school supplies and uniforms through Canadian Feed The Children’s Best.Gift.Ever catalogue. Your gifts support children who need it most and you’ll get cute cards that make great stocking stuffers!
Prioritize people. Instead of setting aside lots of time

Beijing (IANS): Bruce Lee’s daughter is suing a Chinese fast-food chain for using an image of the late
Bruce Lee’s daughter sues Chinese fast-food chain
martial arts legend. Bruce Lee Enterprises, a California-based company run by Shannon Lee, has
alleged that Real Kungfu, Zhen Gong Fu in Chinese, has used an image of Bruce Lee for its logo with-
out permission, reports Efe news. The company that owns the image rights of Bruce Lee demands a compensation payment of 210 million yuan ($30 million) and the removal of the image. The actor and martial artist died in 1973. Real Kungfu, founded in 1990, has more than 600 stores in the Asian country and has used an image that bears a striking resemblance to the actor since 2004. The logo features a man sporting a yellow sweater in a Kung Fu pose similar to the one adopted and made famous by Lee, who died in 1973. A Shanghai court will now
have to rule on the case. The restaurant chain published a statement on its official Weibo account, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, which said it was “perplexed” by the lawsuit. “The Real Kungfu chain’s logo is one that the company had applied for and obtained after a rigorous screening by the national trademark agency, we have already been using this for 15 years,” the statement said. “We are very surprised that we are now being sued after so many years, and we are currently actively studying the case and preparing our response to the demand.” According to Chinese me-
dia, Shannon Lee had already tried to sue Kungfu in 2010. Although the China Trademark Office acknowledged that Bruce Lee’s heirs were the owners of the rights of his trademark, the case did not proceed. The only living daughter of the actor, whose son Brandon passed away in 1993, criticized director Quentin Tarantino at the end of July for several controversial scenes in “Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood” movie. Shannon Lee has said she is not happy with the way her father was portrayed in the movie and that he comes across as a caricature and arrogant.

In part one of its review series, which takes into account events that happened between 2010 and the end of 2013, the UN highlighted the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, the beginning of the ongoing Syrian conflict for 2011 and Malala’s work in favour of girls’ education for the year 2012, The News International reported on Thursday. In 2014, Malala became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights which started even before she was shot in the head two years ago by Taliban militants. “The attack made waves around the world, and was widely condemned. On Human Rights Day that year, a special tribute to Malala was held at the Paris headquarters of the UNESCO, pushing for action to ensure every girl’s right to go to school, and to advance girls’ education as an urgent priority,” the UN wrote in the review report. “Malala’s activism and profile have only grown since the assassination attempt. She became a UN Messenger of Peace in 2017, with a special focus on girls’ education,” it added. The 22-year-old was also recently chosen by Teen Vogue as as its cover person for its last issue of the decade. The magazine announced it had decided to “reflect” the last 10 years with the education activist.

Prosecute those involved in Khashoggi killing: EU
JITENDRA DESAI
Brussels (IANS): The European Union has urged Saudi Arabia to prosecute those responsible for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi after five people were sentenced to death. Josep Borrell, High representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, called on Riyadh on Tuesday to bring to justice those “responsible and involved” in the killing in Istanbul in 2018 after a ruling on the case on Monday, Efe news reported. He reiterated the need to fully guarantee accountability and prosecution of those responsible and implicated in the murder on 2 October at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, a spokesman for the high representative said in a statement. Borrell added that the practice has to be based on the principles of transparency, respect for legal procedures and due process. His statement came after Saudi Arabia’s public prosecution on Monday sentenced five people to death over the killing. Shalan al-Shalan, spokesman for the public prosecutor, said in a press conference that three other convicts received a total of 24 years in jail for covering up the crime. He added that 10 others were released due to

lack of evidence. Before the verdict, which can still be appealed, Borrell made it clear that the EU was unequivocally opposed to the use of capital punishment “without exception”. He described the death sentence as a cruel and inhuman punishment that fails to deter and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity. Khashoggi´s son praised the sentence, showing confidence in the Saudi judiciary system. “Fairness of the judiciary is based on two principles, fairness and speedy litigation, so there is neither injustice nor procrastination,” Salah tweeted. But a number of authorities, including the Turkish government criticized the verdict. Similarly United Nations’ special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings Agnes Callamard, who investigated Khashoggi’s murder, called the trial a “mockery”. Reporters Without Borders also criticized the sentence and obscurity of the trial. Khashoggi, a staunch critic of the Saudi crown prince, was killed on 2 October after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to pick up paperwork needed for his planned marriage to his Turkish fiancée. Saudi officials initially denied Khashoggi’s death at the consulate but later acknowledged he had been killed when a fight broke out. Saudi Arabia has said Khashoggi was killed in a “rogue operation” and put 11 defendants, all of whom are Saudi nationals, on trial earlier this year. Although the UN and the US Senate held the Crown Prince responsible for the crime, the kingdom’s strongman has not been prosecuted. Khashoggi, 59, had been a columnist for the Washington Post since 2017 after he left Saudi Arabia and was openly critical of the country’s monarchy. The Post has condemned Khashoggi’s killing, with its editorial page editor Fred Hiatt describing it as “a monstrous and unfathomable act” in October.

Toll in Kazakhstan plane crash revised to 12 Nur Sultan (IANS): The Kazakhstan government on Friday revised the number of people killed in a plane crash that occurred earlier in the day shortly after taking off from the Almaty airport to 12, from the initial figure of 15. The Kazakh Interior Ministry had initially said 15 people had been killed, but it later published a list of victims that mentioned only 12 dead, including the captain, a BBC report said. The Ministry said in a statement: “On board were five crew members and 93 passengers, among whom there are foreigners: two citizens of Ukraine, one citizen of Kyrgyzstan, one citizen of China and the rest of the citizens of Kazakhstan. Twelve people were killed, including the commander of the crew, Efe news reported Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar told the media here: “Those (victims) were mainly passengers who were in the nose (of the aircraft). According to Sklyar, 49 people were hospitalized, 18 of them are in critical condition, TASS News Agency reported. Bek Air Flight Z2100 was en route from Almaty to the capital Nur-Sultan when it lost altitude and crashed into a concrete building at 7.22 a.m. It had 95 passengers and five crew members on board. Skylar added that that the runway at the airport was in perfect condition during take off. The Bek Air fleet consists of Fokker 100 planes. Until the reasons of the crash were established, use of other aircraft of this type has been temporarily suspended, government officials said. A governmental commission has been set up to investigate the reasons of the crash. Call For Blood Donors Blood donations between now and January 5 are essential to collect platelets, which are a vital blood component many patients living with cancer or a blood disorder may need for treatment. But platelets have a short expiry of seven days. Statutory holidays in December impact Canadian Blood Services’ collection hours, so every blood donation counts during the holiday season. In 2020, Canada needs over 100,000 new blood donors to keep up with demand. There are many ways to donate. As a national registered charity, Canadian Blood Services also welcomes financial donations prior to the December 31, 2019 tax deadline. Financial contributions are another option for people who want to support Canada’s Lifeline and want to make their blood or platelet donation go further, or for those who are ineligible to donate blood. To make an appointment, download the GiveBlood app, call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or book now at blood.ca. Walk-in appointments are also available at all locations.

Boeing CEO Muilenburg steps down amid 737 MAX crisis San Francisco (IANS): Boeing has announced the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg and named Chairman David Calhoun as his successor. CEO Dennis Muilenburg has resigned from his position and current Chairman David Calhoun has been named by the Board of Directors as his successor, the US aircraft manufacturer said. Boeing on Monday said Calhoun would take over as the new Chief Executive and President as of January 13, 2020, and he will remain a member of the Board, Xinhua reported. It also said board member Lawrence Kellner will become non-executive Chairman of the Board effective immediately. “A change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the company moving forward as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders,” the company said. Meanwhile, Boeing appoints Niel Golightly as the company’s Senior Vice President of Communications, who will assume office on January 1, 2020. “Golightly, 61, will report to interim CEO Greg Smith initially, and then to President and CEO David Calhoun from January 13 onward,” Boeing said.
Smith, who is Boeing chief financial officer, will serve as Boeing’s interim CEO during the transition period after the company’s leadership reshuffle. Golightly succeeds Anne Toulouse, who previously announced her plans to retire in early 2020. Muilenburg’s departure came as the aircraft giant struggles to regain the trust of regulators, customers and the public after two deadly crashes of its 737 MAX jetliner that killed a total of 346 people aboard. Boeing said the new leadership will lead the company with “a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communication with the FAA, other global regulators and its customers.” Boeing’s commercially best seller 737 MAX has been grounded globally in March 2019 in the wake of the two deadly air crashes in Indonesia last October and Ethiopia early this year. The 737 MAX’s return to flight has been postponed after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said earlier this month that it would not re-certify the aircraft for resumed service until 2020, which crushed Boeing’s hope of getting the plane cleared for flight before the end of this year.

Drivers make mistakes on marijuana
Cedric Hughes
BY DOMINIQUE MCCRIMMON (Paralegal) & CEDRIC HUGHES (Lawyer)
TRADITIONALLY, when one hears the phrase “driving under the influence,” they think of alcohol. However, as of October 17, 2018, Canadians now need to keep marijuana in mind as well. One year into the legalization of marijuana and many citizens are unclear about what their rights and restrictions are with regards to this drug. One of the greatest concerns both for users and non-users is whether or not it is legal to drive under the influence of marijuana. While the phrase “under the influence” should act as a pretty big hint, for the sake of clarity I will spell it out: Driving under the influence of marijuana is not legal. Just the same as driving under the influence of alcohol, it is a criminal offence. However, as with alcohol, there is technically a little bit of wiggle room. Driving Under the Influence Ultimately, the reason for prohibition against driving under the influence of marijuana is to ensure that no one is driving impaired. If police have any reason to suspect that your driving is being affected by marijuana, you may receive a 24-hour driving prohibition. Police can have your car impounded, and you will be responsible for all of the related costs. If you receive a 24-hour driving suspension, you have to immediately surrender your driver’s license. While it is not necessary for police to request a physical coordination test, they can. If you feel as though you can prove your sobriety by taking such a test, you may also ask to submit to one. According to ICBC, “cannabis impairs both the cognitive and motor abilities you use to safely operate a motor vehicle.” They identify issues such as slowed reaction time, delayed decision making and difficulty multi-tasking. Naturally, all of these skills are crucial while driving and without them, you are more likely to make mistakes. Increased Car Accidents While it is still a little too early to get many Canadian statistics with regards to marijuana-related car accidents, the U.S. provides us with some fairly persuasive data. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the three states that have legalized marijuana – Colorado, Washington, and Oregon – report an accident rate that is 5.2% – 6% higher than their neighboring states. In addition, on April 20th of each year, a day celebrated by marijuanausers, it is reported that there is a consistent increase in car accidents on that day. The Legal Limit So what is the actual legal limit for driving
under the influence of marijuana? According to the Criminal Code, the legal Blood Drug Concentration limits (BDC) for THC is 2 nanograms (ng) in your blood stream. How much marijuana consumption it takes to get to that level is dependent on the individual (thus, wiggle room). However, there is no way for a police officer to test this on the side of the road. What they can do instead if use a saliva drug test which will determine if THC is present in your system. Once confirmed, they can require a blood test at the police station. Now that we know that the legal limit is, what does the Criminal Code say about legal consequences? Beyond the 24-hour suspension, you can be fined, get points on your license, or possibly even go to jail if you are a repeat offender. For a BDC of 2ng-5ng, the maximum fine is $1,000. Anything above 5ng carries a minimum fine of $1,000. Sure, the fines may be steep. But the risk
of car accident and injury to yourself and others should be top of mind when considering driving under the influence of marijuana. Keep in mind that these laws
only apply to THC. If you have consumed a 100% CBD product, you will not be impaired as with THC so these considerations do not apply.
