Calgary real estate mogul Navjeet (Bob) Singh Dhillon among four South Asians appointed to the Order of Canada NAVJEET (Bob) Singh Dhillon, Calgary real estate mogul who is President/ Founder and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corp, has been appointed an Officer to the Order of Canada “for his achievements in business, and for his unwavering commitment to philanthropy and higher education.” Dhillon made Mainstreet the first Sikh-owned company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. His company acquires underperforming assets (low rent rental-apartments), clusters them into apartment complexes, and upgrades them to mid-market rental units. University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business is named after him. He made a $10-million donation to the school. Dhillon, who came to Calgary as a teenager in the early 1980s, was interviewed by IANS on a visit to Punjab some years ago. IANS reported that Dhillon belongs to Tallewal village near Barnala in Punjab. Born in Japan in 1965, where his grandfather had moved from Punjab to get into shipping business, Dhillon’s family lived in Hong Kong, Japan and Liberia. Having lost everything in Liberia’s civil war, the family moved to Canada in the 1970s to begin from scratch. “For me, it has been an unbelievable journey. I never had an easy break, to

I never had a job in my whole life. All I did was buy, develop, re-develop every type of real estate till I took my portfolio public,” said Dhillon, who studied in Shimla’s Bishop Cotton School from kindergarten till he was a teenager.

I own an island in Belize, have a credit card processing company, merchant process companies and other businesses. These are pretty diverse things I do. But I have very strong roots with Punjab and India,” said Dhillon, who holds a MBA degree from Richard Ivey School of Business. Dhillon started his real estate journey at age 19 by buying two old houses. He renovated and sold them. “I made 17,000 dollars from these. First thing I did was to go and buy a Mercedes. KAMALA Harris made history at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on January 20 as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president of the United States. Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States. Harris is now the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in American government. Harris has shattered the barrier that has kept women from the highest rungs of power in the US for more than 200 years. She was sworn in Wednesday by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court. Moments before Harris’ swearing in, Lady Gaga sang the national anthem accompanied by the US Marine Corps band. Harris’ oath-taking ceremony was bookended by a performance from Jennifer Lopez, reported IANS. Dressed in a deep purple dress and coat crafted by Black designers, Harris placed her left hand on two Bibles with deep meaning in her life and political rise as she raised her right hand to swear the oath of office. One of the Bibles belongs to Regina Shelton, a Black woman who was an emotional anchor during Harris’ early years in California. The other Bible belongs to the late civil rights icon and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, in a nod to his role in Harris’ choice of How-

Male shot at Whalley residence in Surrey SURREY RCMP are investigating a shooting that took place at a residence in Whalley on Thursday morning. At approximately 8:05 a.m. on December 30, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 13900-block of Laurel Drive. Front-
line officers attended and located a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The male was transported to the hospital by emergency health services. Sgt. Elenore Sturko said police said that early indications are that this inci-
dent took place among parties known to one another and appears to be targeted. While the shooting placed members of the community at risk, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety. Multiple officers were in the area look-
ing for the suspect in this shooting. The public was asked to avoid the area while resources, including the Integrated Police Dog Service, were active. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

REVIEW 2021:
SkyTrain extension to Langley gets federal funding; Surrey Police Service officers on operational duties; UBC expanding presence in Surrey -- Mayor Doug McCallum’s successes continue
2021 was a year of major successes for Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum and his Safe Surrey Coalition party in spite of vicious, slanderous attacks – including a fake referendum that failed -- by a raft of frustrated opponents hell-bent on sabotaging McCallum and his party who were democratically elected. Here we will mention just three of their major achievements that the silent majority in Surrey are thrilled about even as the screeching minority gets increasingly hysterical. The most outstanding achievement was garnering solid federal funding for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension in July. This was one of the three main issues that McCallum and seven of his Safe Surrey Coalition candidates won the civic election on – though three of the councillors shamelessly deserted the party once they got elected. But McCallum and the other councillors – Mandeep Nagra, Allison Patton, Doug Elford and Laurie Guerra – stuck to their promises against what seemed to be impossible odds. Every form of attack was launched against the Sky Train by McCallum’s opponents – and they were supported by a section of biased, corrupt and racist mainstream media whose influence has been greatly diminished by a robust ethnic media. However, all the opponents were in a state of shock when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in July announced up to $1.3 billion in federal funding toward the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension project. The Province of British Columbia and its partners will fund the remainder of the costs for the
a strong working relationship with Chief Constable Lipinski and SPS, and we share a commitment to keeping our community safe.”

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension project will support an area with a fast-growing population representing 25 per cent of the population of Metro Vancouver, help improve public transit accessibility for residents and businesses south of the Fraser River, connect more people to housing, employment, and schools, and encourage greater development around SkyTrain stations. The project will also create approximately 3,000 full-time, wellpaying middle class jobs. THEN there was the continuing successful building of the Surrey Police Service that is replacing the RCMP in Surrey – another major issue on which McCallum and his Safe Surrey Coalition won the election. McCallum’s opponents were rattled when, at the end of November, Surrey RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards and Surrey Police Service Chief Constable Norm Lipinski announced that the first group of experienced police officers with the

SPS would be assuming operational policing duties, following an orientation with Surrey RCMP that began on November 29. Indeed, there is no going back – and sources in the provincial government tell us that there is no way that this process can be undone no matter who wins the civic election in 2022. As it is, authorities in the provincial and federal government have been disgusted at the abusive and threatening emails that they have been receiving from RCMP supporters over the past few years on this issue. While the public can expect to see officers in both the RCMP and SPS uniforms responding to calls for service, all contact information and police station locations remain the same. The public will continue to report crime and suspicious activity to the Surrey RCMP non-emergency number at 604-599-0502 (911 for emergencies) or report online. “Our top priority throughout this transition is and will remain public safety,” said Edwards. “Our officers have a long history of dedicated service to our community. AND the icing on the cake for McCallum and the Safe Surrey Coalition was the announcement that the University of British Columbia (UBC) was expanding its presence in Surrey with the $70-million purchase of a property in Surrey. UBC Properties Trust has acquired a 135,000-square-foot property—currently home to the Grace Hanin Community Church— at the intersection of King George Boulevard and Fraser Highway. The site, which is located close to SkyTrain, Surrey Memorial Hospital and other community amenities, is anticipated to be a combination of residential and commercial space which will generate revenue to enable the construction of dedicated academic facilities.McCallum noted: “The $70 million land investment by UBC is another indicator of Surrey’s rising prominence in the region. … This is a huge and exciting announcement for Surrey as I have always believed that top tier post secondary options should be easily accessible to our residents. I helped bring top tier post-secondary education to Surrey with the establishment of SFU’s Surrey campus … The City will be fast-tracking permits for this project to ensure this site is developed as quickly as possible. Construction of the site will bring numerous well-paying jobs, and when completed, UBC will have access to the largest segment of university aged population in the province right here in Surrey.”

Community activist Charan Gill a legend in his own time COMMUNITY activist, Charan Gill, the founder and CEO of the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS), passed away on [February 2]. In 1978, Gill helped co-found the Canadian Farmworkers Union that exists to improve the human rights, health and safety and employment standards of farmworkers. In 1987, he co-founded the British Columbia Organization to Fight Racism, which later grew into Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research Society. PICS Society was established in 1987 and continues to provide programs and services that directly assist youth, seniors and new immigrants with the goal of promoting harmony and intercultural understanding. Among the awards Gill won were the Order of BC, the BC Human Rights Award by MOSAIC and the Golden Jubilee Medal. He was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2013. Premier John Horgan tweeted: “We’re saddened by the passing of Charan Gill. A lifelong champion for social justice and working people, he received the Order of BC for his tremendous contributions to our province. Sending my condolences to his family and friends.” The family of Charan Gill issued the follow-

dia in 1938 when he was two years of age. Unfortunately, his father passed away in 1939 and his mother, Mrs. Harnam Kaur Gill, raised Charan and his five siblings by herself. Charan was extremely good in studies and obtained his Masters degree in Punjabi from Punjab University in 1959. Charan went on to earn a BSW and a MSW from University of British Columbia. In his twenties Charan returned to Hong Kong and started working at a bank. After living in Hong Kong for six years, and on the advice of his sister, he moved to Canada in 1967. Upon arriving in Canada, Charan worked in a sawmill in Williams Lake, but broke his wrist in an accident. He served as a social worker for northern small communities based out of Prince Rupert. In 1969 he was able to sponsor his wife and children to join him in Canada. In 1973 he moved his family to Surrey’s Fraser Valley where he resided and worked. In 1979, Charan was one of the founders of the Farm Workers Organizing Committee, which led to his co-founding the Canadian Farmworkers Union (CFU) in 1980, for which he served as Secretary and Treasurer. The CFU organized labour on farms in the early 1980s which led to significant improvements in the wages and working conditions of Brit-
ish Columbia farmworkers. … At the same time as he was advocating for agricultural workers, Charan in 1980 also co-founded the British Columbia Organization to Fight Racism (BCOFR) and served as its founding president. The BCOFR played a significant role in combating racism and stemming growth of the KKK in the 1980s B.C., when people of colour were routinely targeted by racists and neo-Nazis. The BCOFR organized a number of rallies and demonstrations throughout the 1980s. Despite threats to his life and vandalism of his organization’s offices Charan continued to be the BCOFR’s president as long as the organization was active in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1987, after retiring from his position as a social worker with the province, he felt there was a need for an organization in Surrey that could serve the South Asian immigrant community. He got together with eight of his friends to contribute $10 each and in 1987 incorporated the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS). Charan served as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer from 1987 to 2017. Pregnant Richmond RCMP Constable Jasmine Thiara’s apparent suicide exposes obnoxious RCMP culture THE VOICE was the first to report the apparent suicide of Richmond RCMP Constable Jasmine Thiara on Tuesday, February 23 on our website voiceonline.com. But at the request of one of her family members, we removed the story from our website. There was also information that we did not publish back then. On February 26, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. announced on its website that it was “investigating the circumstances surrounding the February 21 death of an off-duty member of the Richmond RCMP.” It said: “At approximately 9:15 p.m. on February 21, calls to 911 reported a woman considering self-harm. Just after 10 p.m., Vancouver Police officers located the woman’s body on the sidewalk of the Moray Bridge in Richmond. She had suffered what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries.” The IIO said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding this death, but further details would not be released at that time in order to protect the integrity of the investigation. Anyone with relevant information was asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855446-8477. However, this week, her family members and their lawyer spoke to mainstream media
Constable Jasmine Thiara. about the tragic incident and we informed our readers about it on Tuesday morning. We wrote: “The VOICE can inform its readers that she was pregnant and the father of the unborn child was her senior officer who
reportedly would not take responsibility for it. We know his name.” Thiara’s family members told Global News that she left her home on February 21 ostensibly to get some gas and food. She took her badge and gun along. The family’s lawyer Martin Peters revealed that her body was found with a single gunshot wound to the head. Peters also told Global that two days before the tragedy, there was a shocking revelation. He told Global: “The most important thing about this is Constable Jasmine Thiara was three-and-a-half months pregnant and the father of that fetus was a superior officer working in the Richmond detachment.” Thiara’s family told Global that the officer started visiting her several months after she graduated from RCMP training in December 2018. Peters has asked for the initial coroner’s report but hasn’t heard back from the Coroners Service. The RCMP is also carrying out its own inquiry into Thiara’s apparent suicide. (Taxpayers’ money to the tune of $200 million are being spent to compensate female RCMP officers, and employee and volunteers because of sexual harassment.)

Enhanced safety measures, delayed return to school to support safe, in-person learning A full return to school for students in kindergarten to Grade 12 will be delayed until Monday, January 10, in order to give public health and B.C. schools additional time to adapt to the impacts of the Omicron variant on communities and schools, and to implement enhanced safety plans to support the continuation of in-class learning. During this time, schools will be open for limited numbers of students in particular need. Districts will be communicating out to families about how this process will work. “Schools have safety protocols in place that have kept students and staff in school over the past two years, but as the pandemic chang-
Dr. Bonnie Henry es, our protocols must change, too,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer, on Wednesday. “That’s why schools will be implementing enhanced public-
health measures to ensure we can continue the in-person learning that is so important for wellbeing and mental health.” The delayed return is supported by an Order from the Provincial Health Officer, which applies to all public and independent schools in British Columbia. While students will return on January 10, staff will return on January 3 and 4. This will allow schools to implement enhanced safety measures and proactively implement continuity of learning plans. “We know how important it is for students to return to safe, inperson learning,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. “This extra time will allow the Ministry of Education and public
health to better understand the impact of the Omicron variant on the education system, and school communities to prepare for students returning to class with enhanced safety measures. Safety is our top priority, and we’re going to keep working with public health to ensure the right measures continue to be in place to keep students and staff safe.” The Ministry of Education has developed an addendum to the Provincial COVID-19 Communicable Disease Guidelines for K-12 settings based on public health’s current knowledge of the Omicron variant. The guidelines were developed in collaboration with the BC Centre for Disease Control, Indigenous rightsholders and
education partners, including teachers, parents and school administrators. As the ministry has done throughout the pandemic, safety measures for schools will continue to be updated as needed in consultation with public health. K-12 schools must reinforce existing safety measures, including: * Using all available space to maximize space between people: – For example, different common space, classroom and learning environment configurations (e.g., avoid face-to-face seating arrangements where possible). * Everyone able to wear a mask. * Doing daily health checks, and staying home when sick. MAY 2021: STORY OF THE MONTH
Toronto Raptors Superfan Nav Bhatia first fan to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame TORONTO Raptors Superfan Nav Bhatia became the first fan to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday. He was honoured at the unveiling of the James Goldstein Superfan Gallery in Springfield, Massachusetts. His display includes the first turban in the hall of fame, as well as a replica of his championship ring, a superfan bobble head, custom superfan shoes, his courtside seat and the original Raptors jersey he was presented in 1998 that declared him a “superfan,” according to a CTV report. Bhatia tweeted: “Today was a dream. In the greatest building basketball has, the name Superfan Nav Bhatia will be immortalized. There is now a turban and the first fan honoured within Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame. I am overcome with emotions today.” Bhatia was presented with a Hall of Fame class of 2020 ring and tweeted that he was honoured and humbled to receive it, adding: “I wear this with immense pride and responsibility to carry on spreading the game I love.” IN 2014, The VOICE wrote in a story titled “Nav Bhatia rocks the audience at TEDx Toronto”: Nav’s story is one of an immigrant fleeing the Sikh riots in India during 1984 to Canada and the start of a new life. This new beginning did have its challenges. Nav describes in detail the difficulty he had finding his first job to his rise up the Hyundai ladder only to have most of his
stream and as a result increase South Asian attendance to the games. The organization welcomed Nav’s initiative and has been awarded most diverse fan base five years in a row by the NBA. The partnership has proven beneficial for the Raptors and Nav as thousands of South Asians are present amongst the crowd integrating into the mainstream, standing side by side with people of all colours. crowd his dealership was now the number one volume dealer for Hyundai in Canada. Nav then transitioned to his love for basketball and his enthusiasm for the Toronto Raptors. Sitting courtside, Nav has not missed a game or has been late to a game for 20 years. In 1998 General Manager Isiah Thomas presented Nav with a jersey at center court inscribed with SUPERFAN on the back. The once ostracized Sikh was now being honoured by the mainstream community. Days later Nav walked into a room to have a gentleman on the phone announce: “My cab is here”. This was the moment Nav Bhatia realized he needed to do something to change the perception of Sikhs in the mainstream. Nav explained: “I was not angry. A lot of my Sikh brothers drive cabs and I am proud of them. I believe in the dignity of labour. I just want mainstream society to know just like any other race, we drive cabs, we own restaurants and we are CEOs of major companies.” He discussed a plan with the Toronto Raptors to improve the perception of Sikhs in the main-

JUNE 2021: STORY OF THE MONTH
Driver crashes into Muslim family in ‘planned, premeditated’ attack in London, Ontario, killing four POLICE in London, Ontario, say that there is is evidence that the driver of a pick-up truck struck five pedestrians on Sunday in “a planned, premeditated” attack and that “the family was targeted because of their Muslim faith.” The truck driver, Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The dead include a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl. A nine-year-old boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say potential terrorism charges are being considered. According to one witness, Veltman “got out of the car with a military helmet and armour on.” He added: “He had a big bull bar on the front of the truck and tinted windows. It looked like he was prepared to do something f—ing crazy.” The victims were later identified by the family as Salman Afzaal, 46. Madiha Salman, 44, Talat Afzaal, 74, and Yumna Afzaal, 15. Nineyear-old Fayez Salman was the only surviving victim. The Toronto Star reported that Salman Afzaal was registered to work as a physiotherapist at two care homes after obtaining his degree at the University of Karachi in 1997, according to the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Madiha Salman was pursuing a PhD in environmental engineering, researching how to clean soils damaged by industrial chemicals, the Star said. In Pakistan, she’d been the only female student in the class of 174 civil engineering students, according to her graduate supervisor.
(L-R) Victims Yumna Afzaal, 15, Madiha Salman, 44, Talat Afzaal, 74, and Salman Afzaal, 46. London Police Chief Steve Williams said on Monday: “We understand that this event may cause fear and anxiety in the community and in particular the Muslim community and any community targeted by hate. I want to reassure all Londoners that all of us on the call today and many others stand with you and support you.” London Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement: “I speak on behalf of all Londoners when I say our hearts are broken. We grieve for the family, three generations of whom are now deceased. We weep for their loved ones. We pray for the recovery of the 9-year-old boy who remains in hospital. I have ordered flags outside London City Hall lowered for three days of mourning.” Mustafa Farooq, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), said: “Muslims
in Canada have become all too familiar with the violence of Islamophobia, with attacks on Muslim women in Alberta, the IMO mosque killing, and the Quebec City mosque massacre. But this loss of a family, the loss of a child in our community because of Islamophobia – this is a sorrow that will run deep for a long time. But let that sorrow be the ground where we stand for justice, and stand for change.” Among other stories The VOICE carried in June on South Asians (you can check them out on our website voiceonline.com): * Jarnail Randhawa, 64, of Brampton arrested for murder of his wife * New hard hat rules in B.C. make workplaces more inclusive * Alvis Anjesh Singh, 44, is Vancouver’s homi-

Workforce will benefit from five paid sick days beginning January 1 EMPLOYERS and workers throughout B.C. are reminded that, as of January 1, 2022, eligible employees are entitled to a minimum of five paid sick days each year if they have worked at the organization for at least 90
days. More than one million workers could immediately benefit as B.C. becomes the first province in Canada to legislate this level of paid time off for workers who fall ill. This new workplace protec-
tion applies to all workers covered by the Employment Standards Act, including part-time workers. “Until now, about half of B.C. workers have been unable to stay home when sick without losing
wages,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, on Thursday. “Many of those are lower-paid workers who can least afford to lose the money and, as a result, end up going to work sick. Paid sick leave is the right thing to do, and it is now
in British Columbia permanently.” A comprehensive public consultation process informed government’s decision to set the minimum paid sick leave at five days. For more details, visit our website voiceonline.com

Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria: ‘Canada and India basically have a very positive partnership with creative ways of cooperating’ wal scoops up $35,000 – B.C.’s second largest seller’s prize ever
(This is part of our interview with Bisaria) There is no limit to expanding trade between India and Canada. What do you think would really give a boost to our economic relations because trade between our countries is not as large as it can be? BISARIA: We have to recognize that Canada is a relatively small country of 38 million people. So there is a natural limit to how much trade we can do, but certainly the trade is below potential. What we achieved in 2019 was a trade level of CDN$10 billion which was higher than it has ever been. But I think there are multiple pathways to growth. One of the things that we are trying to increase trade is to work out a comprehensive trade agreement. We are in serious discussion at this point at the expert level on a limited trade agreement which will be not a high ambition trade agreement which we have been discussing for ten years, but a reaping as it were of the low hanging fruit. So what we are hoping to achieve is to agree on, the areas we agree on which are of interest to both sides, and on a limited number of issues, so that we can go ahead with such an early harvest trade agreement. And that is something which will certainly boost trade. We are also discussing an investment promotion agreement. So while trade is an important part of the economic partnership, even more significant is the investment coming in from Canada into India, which is largely portfolio investment. The headline of the economic partnership between India and Canada has been the increase in investments from about $5 billion portfolio investment in 2015 to about $60 billion today. So it is a huge increase and it also speaks to the confidence that Canadian investors and portfolio investments and investment firms have in the Indian growth story. So overall, the economic exchange annually between India and Canada is $100 billion compared to a trade level of just $10 billion, because if you add the investments to the trade and add the remittances and tourism spends, we have a very strong economic exchange overall. This will easily double in the next five years because as the Indian economy grows to $5 trillion and then $10 trillion, I think the India-Canada partnership will more than commensurately increase. Herb Dhaliwal slams O’Toole, Trudeau and Singh for denying truth about Quebec’s discriminatory secular laws FORMER federal minister in Jean Chretien’s government, Herb Dhaliwal, this week slammed the leaders of the three main parties – Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh – for very cravenly tiptoeing around the issue of Quebec’s racist Bill 21 that bans the display of religious symbols in the workplace by public-sector employees. That bill, which denies Canadians the wearing of symbols manifesting their faith such as crosses, hijabs, kirpans, turbans and stars of David, is just plain wrong, said Dhaliwal in a statement. Dhaliwal was speaking out following the political uproar prompted by the exchange between last week’s Leaders’ Debate moderator Shachi Kurl and Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet regarding the discrimination inherent in Quebec’s Bills 21 and 96. Dhaliwal said: “I firmly believe those Quebec provincial statutes are not only discriminatory, but a reflection of systemic racism that needs to be eradicated throughout Canada. Mahatma Gandhi summed it up effectively when he declared that people are not discriminatory, but laws can be, and some definitely are.” He pointed out that many Canadians have become second-class citizens in Quebec because of Bill 21 and that should be unacceptable to all Canadians.
Herb Dhaliwal with Jean Chretien in 2019 in Vancouver. DHALIWAL said in his statement: “When the Bloc Quebecois Leader sparred on air with debate moderator Shachi Kurl over a question approved by the Debate Broadcast Group about Bills 21 and 96 marginalizing religious minorities (where she rightfully described Quebec’s controversial legislation as discriminatory), it revealed to me the chasm of difference on this subject between some Quebecers and many of us in the rest of Canada today. Notably, a Quebec Superior Court judge has ruled this legislation violates fundamental rights of expression and freedom of religion. Only because the ‘notwithstanding clause’ was evoked by the Quebec Government has this odious manifestation of discrimination been

allowed to stand. “Blanchet’s acerbic response to Kurl’s question on the legislated ban on the wearing of visible religious symbols by public servants in positions of authority, including, most controversially, schoolteachers, has triggered exploitation by the Bloc scrambling to retain its 32-seat momentum captured in 2019 among Quebec voters. Meanwhile, it is noticeable how disingenuous the Conservative, Liberal and NDP Leaders have been in carefully avoiding, and even disavowing, any perception that they support the laudable position articulated by Ms. Kurl, undeniably a politically volatile one. “Shachi Kurl doesn’t need me to defend her and the completely legiti-
mate and appropriate question she posed to Monsieur Blanchet about discriminatory Quebec laws. How can anyone in that Province, or anywhere in Canada – particularly any Party Leader seeking to become Prime Minister of this country after the September 20 general election – seriously explain, or convincingly avoid condemning, the enactment of the Quebec National Assembly which restricts minorities’ job opportunities because of their religious convictions? Denying them the wearing of symbols manifesting their faith such as crosses, hijabs, kirpans, turbans and stars of David is just plain wrong. Yes, and discriminatory!” [For the full statement, visit our website voiceonline.com] (Herb Dhaliwal was the first South Asian to become a federal minister and held the portfolios of Natural Resources; Fisheries and Oceans; and National Revenue. Provincial state of emergency extended WITH multiple highways still damaged by flooding and mudslides, the Province announced on Monday it is extending the provincial state of emergency. Given the continued need for public safety measures under the Emergency Program Act and ongoing work to repair damaged highways, the provincial state of emergency is being extended until the end of the day on January 11, 2022.
“While significant progress has been made in recovery and repair efforts, there is still more to do to reopen our highways and get people back into their homes,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “My thanks go out to all British Columbians for their patience and compliance during these challenging times, and to the crews who have worked tirelessly to get these highways back open.”

The order restricting travel on highways 5 and 99 will remain in place. This includes: * Highway 5 (Coquihalla) between Hope and Merritt (only commercial vehicles with a minimum licensed gross vehicle weight of 11,794 kilograms, and inter-city buses are permitted); * from the junction of Highway 99 and Lillooet River Road to the BC Hydro Seton Lake campsite access in Lillooet (open to all traffic, but vehicles weighing more than 14,500 kilograms
are not permitted). “Reopening the Coquihalla to commercial trucks and intercity buses was an important step in our recovery from November’s storm damage,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Repairs to our highway infrastructure are progressing well. However, with winter conditions here and more work to do, some restrictions must remain in place.”

OCTOBER 2021: STORY OF THE MONTH

Anita Anand is the new Defence Minister ANITA Anand is Canada’s new Defence Min‑ ister, replacing Harjit Sajjan, who had come under severe criticism for the way he handled sexual assault allegations in his department. She is the second woman — and first woman of colour — to hold this position. Sajjan will be minister of international develop‑ ment and minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada. Kamal Khera was appointed Minister of Se‑ niors. She had served as parliamentary secre‑ tary to several ministers in the past. Three previous ministers — Marc Garneau, who’d held the Foreign Affairs portfolio, Bardish Chagger, who was the Minister of Diversity In‑ clusion and Youth, and Jim Carr, the Special Representative for the Prairies — have been dropped from Cabinet. The new Cabinet consists of Prime Minister Jus‑ tin Trudeau and 38 ministers. In keeping with the precedent set in 2015, there is an equal number of women and men. Trudeau said: “Canadians need a strong and di‑ verse Cabinet to deliver on their priorities and keep Canada moving forward for everyone. This team will finish the fight against COVID‑19, deliver on $10‑a‑day child care, help Canadians find a home of their own, tackle the climate cri‑ sis, and continue to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Together, we will work tire‑ lessly to build a better future for all Canadians.” ANAND was first elected as Oakville’s Liberal Member of Parliament in 2019, and served as Canada’s Minister of Public Services and Pro‑
Anita Anand Photo courtesy of University of Toronto / Johnny Guatto curement. In this role, she led Canada through the COVID‑19 pandemic on the national effort to supply vaccines, as well as medical and per‑ sonal protective equipment. Anand is also the first Canadian of Hindu back‑ ground to become a federal cabinet minister. Prior to her election, she was a Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto where she held the J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance. She served as As‑ sociate Dean (2007‑2009), and was a member of the Governing Board of Massey College at the University of Toronto. She was also cross‑ appointed to the Rotman School of Manage‑ ment as the Director of Policy and Research at
the Capital Markets Research Institute. She has also taught law at Yale Law School, Queen’s University, and Western University. Anand has completed extensive research on the regulation of financial markets, corporate governance, and shareholder rights, and has appeared regularly in the media to discuss these topics. In 2015, she was appointed to the Government of Ontario’s Expert Committee to Consider Financial Advisory and Financial Plan‑ ning Policy Alternatives. She has conducted research for Ontario’s Five‑Year Review Com‑ mittee, the federal Wise Person’s Committee, and the Task Force to Modernize Securities Leg‑ islation in Canada. In 2019, the Royal Society of Canada awarded her the Yvan Allaire Medal for outstanding contributions in governance relating to private and public organizations. Anand holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Studies from Queen’s University, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University, and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. She was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1994. She and her spouse, John, raised their four children in Oakville. She was born and raised in Kentville, Nova Scotia. New policy motions approved at BC Care Providers Association’s annual general meeting AT its annual general meeting in December, BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) and EngAge BC members passed several spe‑ cial resolutions focused on supporting a safe and sustainable senior living and care sector. A summary of the policy motions that re‑ ceived approval from BCCPA’s member‑ ship: 1. Expanding access and capacity in B.C.’s long‑term care sector: BCCPA recommends that a minimum of $1.6 billion be earmarked over three years to fund the construction and operation of 5,000 new long‑term care
beds across the province by 2027. 2. Developing a Health Human Resource Strat‑ egy: BCCPA urges the Government of British Columbia to work collaboratively with the se‑ niors’ care and living sector to develop a robust Health Human Resource Strategy to address chronic labour shortages—in particular for nurses and care aides—by improving access to training opportunities, increasing aware‑ ness of the quality careers in care, streamlining credential recognition, and promoting worker safety and retention. 3. Addressing staffing levels and care hours in long‑term care: BCCPA urges that the Govern‑

ment of British Columbia establish a minimum of four hours of care per day for each resident in long‑term care, up until such a time that the most appropriate staffing levels and workforce mix can be determined based on resident acu‑ ity and case mix. 4. Implementing civil liability protection for B.C.’s seniors’ care and living sector: BCCPA recommends that the Government of Brit‑ ish Columbia adopt new legislation similar to Ontario’s Bill 218 or Alberta’s Bill 70 CO‑ VID‑19 Related Measures Act in order to offer protection from civil liability for workers, vol‑ unteers and organizations in the seniors’ care
and living sector – including long term care, assisted living, independent living and home health care operators – that have made and are making an honest effort to follow public health guidelines and COVID‑19‑related law. 5. Improving wildfire preparedness for B.C.’s seniors’ care sector: BCCPA recommends that the BC Health System Wildfire Re‑ sponse plan be updated, better utilized and integrated into provincial and local responses, particularly as it pertains to seniors’ care. In doing so considerations should also be made for the provision of appropriate funding and/or resources.

There were jubilation and celebration in the Scott Road and 72 Avenue area in Surrey on the night of November 18 (which was the morning of November 19 in India) as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the three controversial farm laws that sparked protests in India and abroad, including in Canada, will be repealed. Excited drivers honked their car horns while those gathered at the sides of the road cheered. New Delhi (IANS): A little more than a year after they were passed followed by widespread agitation by farmers declining to accept them, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 19 announced that the Centre has decided to repeal the three farm laws. Coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Modi also announced that the constitutional process to repeal the laws would be taken up in the winter session of Parliament that begins on November 29 and appealed to the agitating farmers to withdraw their agitation and go back to their homes. “It seems some of the farmers are still not convinced by our sincere efforts. We have decided to repeal the three farm laws. The constitutional process to repeal these laws would be completed during the Parliament Session that would start at the end of this month,” Modi said, adding an apology in his address to the nation. Modi also announced to form a committee comprising representatives of the Centre, state governments, farmers, agriculture scientists and agriculture economists to discuss how Minimum Support Price (MSP) can be made more effective, how zero budget farming can be promoted and how crop patterns can be changed in a scientific manner. After they were passed in the monsoon session of Parliament, the President had given his assent to the three Farm Bills on September 27, 2020. The three Bills were Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020. Ahead of these becoming laws and soon after that, farmers across the platforms had embarked on agitation, some of them peaceful, some resulting in damage to the government

Hundreds of these farmers -- most of them from western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha -have been camping at various entry points to Delhi. They were not buying the Centre’s argument that the three farm laws would bring in reforms in the agriculture sector and basically remove the intermediaries, because of which the small farmers will benefit.

WorkSafeBC reminding employers and workers to take precautions when working in cold weather WITH cold temperatures and winter conditions continuing to be in the forecast for most of B.C., WorkSafeBC is reminding employers and workers to take precautions and stay safe when working outdoors. A number of industries and occupations can involve substantial outdoor cold-weather exposure, including construction workers, utility and maintenance workers, transport truck drivers, recreational instructors, operators and attendants. Between 2016 and 2020, a total of 56 claims were accepted by WorkSafeBC for injuries related to cold stress. The most common cold-weather injury is frostbite, which can occur quickly in extreme temperatures, especially when wind or wet clothing are factors. Cold stress can also lead to hypothermia, where a worker becomes so cold they lose more heat than their body produces. Hypothermia has the potential to be fatal.
“Working in cold-weather conditions can lead to serious injuries if you’re not prepared,” says Tom Brocklehurst, Director of OHS Practice and Engineering Support at WorkSafeBC. “Employers need to be aware of the risks to their workers during this cold snap, and ensure measures are in place to keep their workforce safe.” For work in cold weather, employers need to do a cold-stress assessment and implement a plan to protect workers from cold exposure. WorkSafeBC provides the following safety tips for reducing the risks to workers from cold weather: * Elimination or substitution: Eliminating the hazard is the most effective control. Consider if the work can be done in a different environment. * Engineering controls: Making physical modifications to facilities,
Bringing down costs for British Columbians in 2022: Province THE Province says it is working to bring down costs for people in 2022. In the coming year, families will benefit from: * expanded $10-a-day child care and reducing average fees by as much 50% by the end of 2022 for children under six * free public transit for kids under 12 that will save them as much as $672 in 2022 * the biggest rate reduction in ICBC’s history, which reduced car insurance rates by 20% on average in 2021 * increased minimum wage, which gives the lowest-paid workers in B.C. a raise to more than $15.20 “People are worried about the cost of everyday life, and the pandemic has only made it more difficult for
John Horgan those already struggling to get by,” said Premier John Horgan on Tuesday. “This year, our government will continue working to bring down costs for people and their families so we can build a stronger B.C. for everyone.” These initiatives build on the Province’s work to make life more affordable
for people over the last four years, including: * elimination of MSP premiums and bridge tolls * capping rent increases to inflation * saving tens of thousands of families up to $19,000 a year on child care * eliminating interest on student loans * increasing income assistance by more than 50% “We don’t want to go back to the old ways of unfair MSP premiums or skyrocketing ICBC rates that made life more unaffordable for people,” Horgan said. “There’s still much more work to do, but we’ve taken concrete action to lower costs for families. We’ll keep working to put money back into the pockets of British Columbians.”

equipment and processes can reduce exposure to cold weather. Consider if heated warming shelters can be placed on site, or if machines and tools can be designed so they can be operated without having to remove mittens or gloves. * Administrative controls: Consider if work practices and work policies can be changed to reduce risk, such as work rotation to decrease cold exposure, and pacing the work differently so workers don’t have to exert themselves in cold weather. * Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): PPE should be the final consideration when doing a risk assessment. Consider whether
personal battery-operated heaters or chemical heating pads under clothing can be used. Workers need layered clothing, a head covering, and must keep hands and feet warm and dry. WorkSafeBC says that it’s important that workers stay hydrated when working in cold weather by drinking plenty of fluids, but to avoid drinking coffee, tea or alcohol. Workers or employers with questions about working in cold weather are encouraged to call WorkSafeBC’s Prevention Information Line at: 1-888-621-7233. More information about cold stress can be found online at: worksafebc.com.

People fed up with traditional parties, says Kejriwal on Chandigarh civic poll win Chandigarh (IANS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday that people across the country, including in Chandigarh and Punjab, are fed up with traditional parties, leaders and old-style politics. People want freedom from corruption, which got reflected in AAP’s victory in the Chandigarh civic body elections on Monday, he said. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Kejriwal said the people of Chandigarh have truly performed a miracle in the municipal elections. Traditional parties’ thrones were shaken by the defeat of some veterans, including the sitting BJP Mayor, two former Mayors and the president of the BJP’s youth wing, as people have come to believe in the Aam Aadmi Party and its new faces, he said. He said the results in Chandigarh had dispelled the myths and misinformation spread by the opposition about AAP. “I remember when political pundits used to say after the 2017 election results that the Aam Aadmi Party is not supported by the urban voters. But the victory in Chandigarh has proved that this time the urban masses of Punjab will also stand by AAP. “Today, the entire rural and urban population of Punjab perceives AAP as a great hope, as the traditional parties have disappointed and dismayed the people even after repeated opportunities. The whole of Punjab wants change. Like Delhi and Chandigarh, Punjab wants new faces and honest politics,” he said. Kejriwal added that in honour of the mandate given by the people
of Chandigarh, AAP would move forward along with other elected candidates, regardless of the party they belong to. “The aim is to make Chandigarh a beautiful city again and free it from all the problems it is facing today. That is why AAP will develop Chandigarh by making everyone a partner in this process,” he said. “I bow to the people of Chandigarh. I would like to assure the people of Chandigarh that the trust they have shown in AAP will not be allowed to falter, but will be strengthened by meeting all the expectations,” Kejriwal added. AAP emerged as the single largest party in its maiden civic body elections in Chandigarh, winning 14 seats even as the results threw up a hung House. The ruling BJP could win only 12 seats, while the Congress managed eight seats and the Shiromani Akali Dal one seat. According to the Indian Express newspaper, the number of wards went up from 26 last time to 35
now after delimitation. While AAP needs the support of 19 corporators to elect its mayor, the BJP needs 18 as the Chandigarh MP, who has an ex-officio vote in the corporation, belongs to the BJP. AAP managed to trump the BJP despite fielding first-timers and running a low-key campaign. Only two big names turned out for AAP, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and MP Bhagwant Maan, putting in brief appearances. The BJP in contrast roped in Union ministers as well as several of its chief ministers to canvass for its nominees, and sought votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, many of its bigwigs ended up losing to AAP first-timers. Sitting BJP Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma lost to AAP’s Damanpreet Singh from Ward 17 by 828 votes. Other former mayors of the BJP and its sitting councillors also lost to AAP newcomers. In seven wards, the victory margin was less than 200 votes.
The BJP scraped through in two wards by a margin of 9 and 90 votes, while in three, it lost by a margin of less than 100 votes. The Congress, which hoped to have gained some ground after Amarinder Singh’s exit with its smart choice of Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister, will be disappointed. In terms of vote share, AAP got 40%, compared to the BJP’s 34% and the Congress’s 23%. It means the BJP vote share fell by more than half from 2016 (77%). The Congress gained by 8% from last time. The Akalis got 3% votes this time, down 1% from 2016. The tally also showed that parties failed to gauge the silent mood in favour of change. The BJP, in particular, may have miscalculated by centering its campaign around the theme of Hindutva, with Jai Shri Ram slogans and references to Ayodhya temple peppering its campaign. Till the very end, senior leaders were upbeat, asserting that the ruling party at the Centre always had an edge in the Chandigarh civic poll elections. The BJP even had packets of sweets ready in offices. The BJP might have also underestimated the anger against it over the farmers’ agitation. Chandigarh saw robust support for farmers, with Matka Chowk emerging as an epicentre for protests. The new Chandigarh corporation limits include 13 more villages, and the support for farmers was even greater in the rural areas. The women and SC voters also appear to have turned away from the BJP. Of the 7 SC wards, the BJP won only 1. Of the 12 wards reserved for women, the BJP won 2.

AFSPA extension in Nagaland total violation of human rights: Naga groups Kohima (IANS): Hours after the Union Home Ministry extended the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland till June 30 next year, influential Naga civil society organisations (CSOs) on Thursday vehemently objected to the measure. Three wings of the Konyak Union, in a joint statement, said that “they outright declare the measure a total violation of human rights”. “Adding salt to the wound, the extension of AFSPA is a calculated sign that undermines human dignity and value while the Konyaks are crying for justice. Tagging the region as disturbed when its people have totally denounced any form of violence and were yearning for peace.
“The integrity of the nation cannot be achieved without people’s support and confidence,” said the statement, signed by Konyak Union President S. Howing Konyak and other leaders. It said that the extension is an act which is directly aimed at creating confusion and hurt among the Konyak Naga society at a time when emotions
are running high, following the Mon incident earlier this month when 14 civilians were killed in an army ambush on the suspicion of being terrorists, and the ensuing violence. “The army contingent, led by a Major General, that visited on Wednesday the incident place left a lot to be desired. The Konyaks were extremely disturbed and hurt to see the
army contingent accompanied by the killers (jawans). The Konyak community does not view lightly the presence of the murderer in the same vicinity of the victims for at least a period of one year.” The statement said that unless and until there is a serious effort and desire to reach out to the people there can never be peace and harmony and AFSPA is definitely not the solution to this disharmony. The Konyak Nagas have yearned for peace and integration with the rest of India but it looks like India is not interested in achieving peace or uniting the Konyaks and Nagas with the rest of the nation, said the statement, also signed by Konyak Women
Wing President Ponglem Konyak, and Konyak Student Wing President Noklem Konyak. Konyaks are one of the prominent among the 16 tribes in Nagaland, where over 86 per cent of the two million population is from the tribal community. Besides the Konyak Union wings, several other organisations including the Naga People’s Front (NPF), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) have been agitating to repeal the AFSPA from the entire northeastern region after the killing of 14 people and injuring 30 others on December 4 and 5 in Mon district of Nagaland.
Several allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party including the National People’s Party (NPP) headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) have also been demanding to repeal the AFSPA from the entire northeastern region. The Nagaland Assembly on December 20 passed an unanimous resolution to remove this Act. On December 23, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with the Nagaland and ssam Chief Ministers and other leaders of Nagaland and and formed a committee to look into the withdrawal of AFSPA in Nagaland. The committee was to submit its report in 45 days.

Congress turns 137 with less than 90 MPs in Parliament New Delhi (IANS): While the Congress on Tuesday celebrated its 137th foundation day across the country, the grand old party’s presence has been reduced to just three states -- Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Rajasthan -- besides being part of the coalition government in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Alarmingly, the party now has less than 100 MPs -- 87 -- in both Houses of the Parliament. As per the Lok Sabha website, out of the 542 members in the Lower House, Congress has only 53 MPs as against BJP’s 301. In the Rajya Sabha, the Congress has 34 MPs besides having the leader of opposition status, though the party is completely outnumbered by BJP’s 97 members in the Upper House. The Congress has been decimated in the states too with regional parties taking its place in states where once the party held strong, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala where other parties have gained at Congress’ expense. The Congress is a junior partner in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra where it had ruled for 15 years as a senior coalition partner with the NCP. Similarly, in Jharkhand it is in alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The Congress has around 764 MLAs across the country, as against around 1,432 of the BJP. Moreover, it has been reduced to single digits in the politically important state of Uttar Pradesh (7), while it managed to win just 19 seats in Bihar in 2020. In Odisha, it has 9 MLAs while it failed to open its account in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi. Notably, the party was in power in all these states before except for West Bengal.
Minorities Commission to send teams at places of church attack New Delhi (IANS): The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) will be sending teams to the places where the churches were attacked recently. The Commission has also taken suo motu cognizance of attacks on churches in different parts of the country and will be sending teams to enquire into the matter as well. “Appropriate action will be taken by the NCM and the Chairman has proposed to visit the site in Ambala where the church was vandalised,” the NCM said in a statement. The decision was taken after Minorities Commission chairman, Iqbal Singh Lalpura on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the members of the Commission. The Commission discussed various issues related to the NCM as well as welfare of the minorities. The recent attack in Ambala and different parts of the country has been reported widely and the government has been on the receiving end. In Karnataka and Haryana, churches were vandalised during Christmas celebrations and a church priest was attacked with a sword in Belagavi district of Karnataka, this month. The Congress has slammed the Centre over attacks on churches in BJP-ruled states and questioned the silence of the Prime Minister. Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said: “Haridwar hate speeches, attacks on churches, murders in the name of religion, are all advanced symptoms of a society and polity in free fall. Hindutvawadis are unleashing barbarism. India is becoming an example of how quickly a democracy can collapse when institutions fail.” Referring to hate speeches in Haridwar, former home minister P. Chidambaram too questioned the silence of the Prime Minister. “On a day when the PM exhorted people to recall the teachings of Jesus Christ, miscreants disrupted a Christmas programme in a private school in Haryana, who are these miscreants? Reports say they shouted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.
On the occasion of the party’s 137th foundation day, interim party President Sonia Gandhi said in a video message that the Congress is committed to protecting the ethos of the country despite electoral setbacks. Though the Congress has faced electoral defeats, the party will continue to fight, Sonia Gandhi said, adding that electoral ups and downs are inevitable, but what is enduring and lasting is her party’s commitment to the service of all the people of the country. “Let there be no doubt over our steadfast resolve. We have never and we will never compromise on our fundamental beliefs that are part of our glorious legacy,” she

said. Founded in 1885, the Indian National Congress has over the decades confronted several challenges. The party rededicated itself to the ideals, values and principles of the organisation that has been shaped, guided and inspired by some of the greatest and most selfless Indians of the 20th century, Sonia Gandhi said. But the party’s humiliating loss in 2014 and 2019 general elections has come as a major jolt, even more than the Emergency in 1975 after which the Congress was wiped out of power in 1977 though it managed to win 154 seats and garnered approximately 34 per cent of the vote share.

22 farmer unions form political front for Punjab polls Chandigarh (IANS): Twenty-two unions of farmers, which were part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) to protest three contentious farm laws, last weekend announced to form a political front ‘Samyukta Samaj Morcha’ to contest the 2022 assembly elections in Punjab on all 117 seats. Chief Minister’s face Balbir Singh Rajewal, however, clarified there was no alliance as of now with any political party, not even with AAP. But at the same time, he didn’t rule out any future possibility. Rajewal told the media here that they were doing it on public demand. “Some of the unions are against it but won’t oppose,” he said. Ten other unions belonging to the state who were part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha have refused to be part of the political front. They include the Krantikari Kisan Union (Darshan Pal), the BKU Krantikari (Surjit Phool) and the BKU Sidhupur (Jagjit Dallewal). Responding to the announcement of the political front, farmer leader Darshan Pal said, “Most of the demands of the farmers like the MSP (minimum support price) are
yet to be accepted. By launching the political front, the movement of farmers might be weakened.” He said the SKM was formed for bigger purpose and he has suggested that the farm leaders should not do injustice to farmers by entering politics. “Every union has the right to make its own decisions. We have earned the trust of farmers across the country and will not enter politics,” Pal added. Earlier this month, BKU (Haryana) President Gurnam Singh Chaduni announced his political outfit Samyukta Sangharsh Party, saying the party will fight the upcoming Punjab elections.

Key conspirator of Ludhiana court blast arrested in Germany New Delhi (IANS): Jaswinder Singh Multan, a top member of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), has been arrested in Germany for allegedly being the main conspirator of the December 23 blast in the Ludhiana district court complex which killed one person and injured five others, sources said. He was arrested in the city of Erfurt after India shared evidence to counter-terror agencies in Berlin. “We shared all the evidence that we gathered from the blast spot and also how the conspiracy by Multan was hatched,” said one of the sources. Multan was conspiring to bring in more explosives from Pakistan in India through the international boundary and was also planning to carry out similar blasts in other parts of the country. It is also alleged that Multan was also behind pushing arms in the Khemkaran area of Punjab’s Tarn Taran district in October this year. The Punjab Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) had recovered a huge cache of weapons near the India-Pakistan border in the Khemkaran area on October 20. They had recovered 22 pistols, 44 magazines and 100 rounds of ammunition and also a kg of heroin. The source said that Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) were in touch with Multan. On December 23, the explosion took place in a washroom on the second floor of the District
and Sessions court complex in Ludhiana at around 12.22 p.m. The counter-terrorism agencies probing the incident had claimed that it was the former Head Constable of Punjab Police, Gagandeep Singh, who planted the bomb at the court complex and died as it suddenly went off killing him on the spot. Gagandeep Singh, a former police head constable who was dismissed from the service for having links with drug dealer. He was booked under NDPS act and lodged in jail for two years in this connection in 2019. The probe agencies claim they have also found that Pakistani’s ISI was behind the blast and were in touch with Gagandeep Singh. During the probe, police found the role of SFJ members Harvinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh Multan, who were based in Germany. They were allegedly in touch with SFJ president Avtar Singh Pannu and Harmeet Singh.
Sodhi given ‘Z’ category security after joining BJP New Delhi (IANS): Like in West Bengal, the Centre has accorded ‘Z’ category security cover to Punjab politician and former Congress leader Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi after he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party recently. Sodhi, who joined the BJP on December 21, will be getting this security cover both in Delhi and Punjab, to be provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), sources in the security set up said here on Wednesday. A four-time MLA who won the last Assembly elections from Guruhar Sarai, Sodhi is said to be close to former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. He has already announced his resignation from the Congress on social media, where he posted his resignation letter addressed to interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
The Union government had provided central security cover to 79 BJP leaders in West Bengal including Trinamool turncoats and the new members during the West Bengal assembly elections in February-March this year. The VIP security of many of them was withdrawn immediately after they returned to the TMC. The Central government withdrew the ‘Z’ category security of former West Bengal minister Rajib Banerjee on December 22, after he returned to the TMC fold following a brief stay in the BJP. Banerjee had contested the last West Bengal assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Domjur in Howrah district but lost to Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Ghosh. He was accorded ‘Z’ category security in West Bengal and ‘Y’ category cover across India.

Akali patriarch Badal at 94 still not ready to hang his boots Chandigarh (IANS): After seven decades in politics, the grand old man of Punjab politics and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch, Parkash Singh Badal, at 94 is still not ready to ride off into the sunset. Despite the political turbulence in the past few years in the state, Badal, affectionately known as Badal Sahab for being a moderate leader with no extreme position even during the height of militancy in the border state, is once again trying to prove his mettle of being a people’s politician with a whole host of policies enacted under his five helms that started by becoming the country’s youngest Chief Minister in 1970. Also holding a tag to become the youngest Sarpanch in India in 1947 at the age of 20, the elderly Badal -- who handed over the reins of the party in 2008 to his only son Sukhbir Badal, the man known for micro poll management for his now own controlled 100-year old party -- is once again set to return to ‘active’ politics after making 11 stints in the Assembly and Parliament. Just weeks ahead of the Assembly elections announcement, Badal senior has started touring his Lambi constituency in Muktsar district. Accompanying his daughter-in-law and Bathinda MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the not-so-tech-savvy Badal, who still believes
in one-on-one connect, is regularly interacting with his constituents. At one of the recent public meetings, former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal was quoted as saying: “When the SAD-BSP comes to power, Sukhbir Badal will be your Chief Minister and Badal Sahab will be your super Chief Minister. “You all convince him to contest the poll. He keeps on saying that health does not allow him. But you all convince him you can make him win elections even if he sits at home.” Without mincing words, even Badal senior is categorically clear in saying in his speeches that, whatever duty the party assigns him, he will do that. Reacting strongly and firmly after a drugs case was registered against former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Badal senior dared the government not to resort to vendetta politics to hide its
failure. Talking to the media here on December 23, the elderly Badal, who firmly believes sacrilege acts hurt every devout Sikh, said the recent incidents of sacrilege and violence have a direct link with the writing on the wall about the outcome of the 2022 Assembly polls. He said the sacred Sri Harmandar Sahib had been made the target of devious and dangerous designs by the Mughals, the British and the Congress rulers. “After 1984 this is the first time that the most sacred shrine of humanity has been made the target of evil designs and it is not merely a coincidence that this too happens during a Congress government,” a beaming 6’2” towering leader who has spent 17 years in jail in various Akali movements, a fact that prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call him Nelson Mandela, said.
Rheem Tank 40,000 BTU 6 Year Warranty We Install Same Day We Remove Your Old Tank AT NO CHARGE
Also, he said his opponents registered hundreds of cases against him and his family, but it did not bother him. “I have spent 17 years in jail in various Akali ‘morchas’ for democracy, civil liberties, peace and reconciliation and I am not afraid of going to jails once again,” the senior Badal, country’s oldest politician next only to BJP veteran L.K. Advani, told IANS. “The Congress has not spared even my wife. If it thinks this can weaken the Akali Dal, it is mistaken,” he added. The shrewd and grounded Badal, who played a major role in bringing another Akali stalwart Ranjit Singh Brahmpura back into the party this week, said: “Today, I am very happy that two brothers have joined hands again.” Appealing to other turncoat Akali leaders to follow
Brahmpura’s example, he said: “Every time we have been attacked, we have emerged stronger. Even Indira Gandhi could not break our will. False cases being registered against us by the Congress won’t deter us from our goal in any manner whatsoever.” He believes the total neglect of governance, stoppage of all welfare and development initiatives by the government will be the reasons behind the rout of the Congress in the forthcoming polls. Political observers say the biggest poll issue this time will be again the drug menace and the recent acts of sacrilege and the turn of events in the aftermath. The Akali Dal is yet to announce its candidate from Lambi despite party chief Sukhbir Badal announcing 91 candidates for the upcoming polls that the
party will fight in alliance with the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The Akali Dal and the BSP will contest 97 and 20 seats respectively for the 117-member Assembly. Snapping over two-decades-long ties, the Akali Dal pulled out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September 2020 after sharp differences over the three controversial farm laws. “Since Sukhbir lacks the political acumen of his father, the party is banking largely on the senior Badal to resurrect it ahead of the forthcoming do-ordie poll for the party,” a senior Akali leader admits to IANS. The Congress, which was out of power in Punjab for a decade (2007-17), got 77 seats in the February 4, 2017, Assembly elections after drubbing the Akali Dal-BJP combine.

Toyota in Canada Donates $150,000 for BC Flood relief TORONTO, ONTARiO: Severe rainfall and floods suddenly impacted the lives of many British Columbians, prompting Toyota in Canada to step up and support with a combined donation of $151,750 to Canadian Red Cross and its British Columbia Floods and Extreme Weather Appeal. In November 2021, Toyota Canada Inc., Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Toyota Financial Services, and Canadian Auto Parts Toyota Inc. made a combined donation of $115,000 to Canadian Red Cross. Recently, Toyota Dealers in British Columbia joined forces to donate $36,750 to Canadian Red Cross, bringing Toyota in Canada’s total contribution to $151,750. Through the help of volunteers and staff, Canadian Red Cross provides emergency support services; this could include lodging, basic needs such as food, and emotional support to people and families who have had to flee their homes in the face of flooding and extreme weather. “The thoughts of the Toyota family are with
the residents of B.C. – including our customers, dealers, employees and communities - as they come together to overcome this disaster,” said Larry Hutchinson, President and CEO of TCI. “We feel it’s important to support the ongoing efforts of organizations like Canadian Red Cross as they work to provide shelter, essential resources and other support for the people who’ve been affected by the recent floods.” While contributions came from all levels within Toyota in Canada, one dealer, Penticton Toyota, stepped up to further support their community by purchasing $1,500 worth of diesel fuel for Westhill Aggregates, an organization that was instrumental in coordinating flood cleanup efforts in Princeton, B.C. The dealership also participated as a receiving centre to collect shovels, heaters and lamps that assisted with clean-up efforts in the community. “Throughout the year, Toyota Dealers actively support their local communities and when an event so significant as the B.C. Floods oc-
curs, we come together as an Association to provide assistance to our people, customers and communities,” says Scott Jones, President, BC Toyota Dealers Association. “We are pleased to support the Canadian Red Cross and their team of volunteers who are on the ground providing essential resources and re-
lief efforts to the residents or British Columbia.” Canadians who are able to contribute are encouraged to make a financial donation to the British Columbia Floods and Extreme Weather Appeal by calling 1-800-418-111 or online at https://www.redcross.ca/.

Mercedes-Benz Canada significantly expands charging access in Eastern Canada.
MeRcedes-BeNz Canada recently announced a major new addition to its industryleading Mercedes me Charge
ecosystem – an integration with Hydro-Québec’s Electric Circuit network that will give Mercedes-EQ drivers access to
more than 3,300 additional EV charging stations in Québec and Eastern Ontario. Mercedes-EQ drivers will be able to seamlessly access Electric Circuit stations installed in parking lots across Québec and in Eastern Ontario, including more than 500 DC fast charging stations - a significant addition to the existing Mercedes me Charge charging network. The sizable increase in both AC and DC charging stations will hugely benefit drivers of the new all-electric EQS sedan and other Mercedes-EQ vehicles to come, including the EQB SUV, Mercedes-AMG EQS 4MATIC+ sedan, EQE sedan and more. With this new Electric Circuit integration, Mercedes-EQ drivers will have access to more than 8,950 public charging ports in total across Canada, including more than 1,300 DC fast charging ports. The EQS 580 4MATIC sedan is capable of DC fast charging up to 200 kW, which

The 2022 Lexus RC F Performance Package (starting MSRP: $98,000) enhances the style, comfort and luxury of the high-performance coupe with unique 19” polished alloy wheels, a carbon fiber roof and Active Rear Wing, and the Torque Vectoring Differential system. Inside, the cabin receives a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, plus a power adjustable steering column and intuitive parking assist. can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 31 minutes. This expanded network access was facilitated by ChargePoint, which enables both Mercedes me Charge as well as the technical integration with Electric Circuit. In an industry first, the Mercedes me Charge ecosystem can also provide drivers access to an additional network of more than 2,400 semi-public ports on the ChargePoint network that reside in accesscontrolled environments like workplaces, shopping malls and hotels. This will ensure that Mercedes-EQ drivers have easy access to charging stations for daily commutes as well as for longer road trips. This combination of public and semi-public access spread across multiple partners will give Mercedes-EQ drivers seamless access to the Mercedes me Charge network across Québec and throughout Canada, making cross-country
trips easy and worry-free. In 2022, Mercedes me Charge customers will also start to benefit from Plug & Charge functionality, allowing for a seamless, convenient charging process on ChargePoint stations. Simply open the flap, plug in and the current immediately starts flowing without any further customer interactions. Plug & Charge will be a significant enhancement to the EQS charging feature-set, which also allows drivers to enable charging via MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) on the vehicle’s media display, through the Mercedes me App (available on Google Play and the App Store) or by using the Mercedes me Charge card. Provided by ChargePoint, the Mercedes me Charge ecosystem simplifies the process of finding, using and paying for charging sessions from a smartphone app and from inside the vehicle using MBUX.

BC Real Estate Poised to Have Another White-Hot Year in 2022
By: Neil Sharma
The Vancouver real estate market is slated for a white-hot year in 2022, following this year’s frenetic activity, says the President of BakerWest. “I base this on substantial statistics,” Jacky Chan told STOREYS, “which our Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship rolled out that show we’re on track to accepting over 400,000 new immigrants or permanent residency applicants into Canada. In 2022, we’re on track to exceed that number with a 411,000 target. We’re talking about over 400,000 people coming into Canada annually over the next five years, which equates to around two million.” Vancouver, the country’s third-largest city and one of its main beneficiaries of immigration — as evidenced by local job creation and, of course, the city’s housing market — is the most expensive in Canada. Demand for the city’s housing has vastly outpaced resale availabilities and developers’ abilities to provide new supply commensurately. The Pacific Rim city is a leading destination for arrivals from across Asia in addition to Europeans and Americans, especially as the satellite offices spill out of Silicon Valley and up the coast. Chan says the cost of hiring qualified programmers and engineers in Vancouver is 30-35% lower than it is in Silicon Valley, and he added that, while major Canadian cities are often rebuked for having unfavourable tax regimes, the overhead in a city like Vancouver makes more financial sense
Buying or Selling...
than it does in the Golden State, which explains the enthusiasm with which Amazon, Facebook, Google and Shopify, to name a few tech juggernauts, are opening offices in the city. To explain the surge of activity Chan forecasts for Vancouver’s real estate market in 2022, he advises analyzing the current preconstruction condo market. “With preconstruction sales this year, we’ve seen massive towers of 300-450 units sold out in a single day, so demand is definitely there even though supply is always not enough, therefore, prices have to go up,” he said. “The preconstruction market in 2022 will be very strong because of the lack of inventory in the real estate market, which discourages conventional offerings as well as the ability to purchase existing properties, of which there aren’t enough on the market to begin with, because you’re fighting with 20-30 people for one home, whereas, through preconstruction sales and marketing, we’re focused on selling entire projects with a minimum of 20-30 units all the way up to 500-plus units, and when we do that it is way easier to service demand for a multitude of people at the same time. The reason is that developers and marketing agencies can gauge and arrange the allocation for buyers. For example, if a particular floor plan of unit A is not available on the 10th floor, we can offset that demand and offer the same floor plan to the same client on the ninth or 11th floor, and that satisfies their demand.” Source: Storeys.com

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

Is virtual healthcare the new normal?
THE current pandemic is deeply affecting many aspects of society. Accelerated usage of virtual healthcare is a good example. While frontline healthcare workers serve patients needing essential in-person care, some doctors and patients are meeting up over the phone or on video calls. Virtual healthcare is well known to those living in remote communities. But during the pandemic, it has become an option for everyone. A debate has ensued about whether such care is good or bad. Proponents of either side are lining up evidence to prove the case. How can you argue with the fact that curable cancers in children have been missed in the absence of face-to-face consultations? But how many lives have been saved by “seeing” the doctor virtually, when the alternative is no treatment at all? The question should be, when is it okay to utilize virtual healthcare, and when not? And how should people approach the option? Governments and regulators have been beefing up policies and billing structures for online medical consultations and treatments. In Canada’s public system, a plethora of new billing codes have been registered since the start of COVID-19. But there hasn’t been as much attention given to educating the public about virtual care. Until recently, there wasn’t much interest among healthcare consumers either. A survey of 4,530 American adults conducted by Deloitte in 2018 showed that 77% had never tried a virtual visit. But as the ancient proverb notes, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” As COVID limited traditional doctor visits, the benefits of virtual care became apparent. Improved access and convenience. Reduced travel. Eliminated parking headaches. No transmission of infection. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported on virtual care use in the province of Ontario before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proportion of Ontarians who had a virtual visit increased from 1.3% in 2019 to 29.2% in 2020, with older people being the highest users. Data from the Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatry department switched from under 5% virtual visits in March 2019 to over 97% in March 2020. Technology advances are also contributing to the trend. Diseases that may have required an in-person diagnosis in the past can now be detected using digital imagery tools, mobile health applications, and wearable medical devices. Powerful medical groups are busy determining the supports clinicians need for effective integration of virtual visits in the practice of medicine. Less evident are the support programs needed by consumers. How does a person know when is the right time to pick up the phone and when to make an in-person appointment? In general, in-person care is always advisable for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures requiring physical contact (e.g., Pap smears and biopsies). The same for prenatal and newborn care. People dealing with multiple health issues or who struggle to communicate virtually should also present in person. But virtual visits will likely be a significant part of the healthcare experience henceforth. So its advisable to get good at making the most of them. Just because you are not
leaving home doesn’t mean you don’t need to prepare. Preparation is more important than ever. Make sure you know how to use whatever equipment is required – from the telephone to computers, mobile apps to specialized software. Be in a quiet space, with sufficient light to read and write – and so the provider can see and hear you well. Have patience and fortitude in case technology fails and to avoid misunderstandings. If you haven’t seen your doctor in person since the start of the pandemic, make an in-person appointment. Visit www.docgiff.com. For comments, contact-us@docgiff.com.
