Monday’s homicide victim in Surrey was Tequel Willis, 14, of Burnaby who was known to police THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team on Tuesday afternoon said that Monday night’s homicide victim in Surrey was a 14-year-old boy from Burnaby who was known to police. The shooting is believed to be a targeted incident and investigators will be working to determine motive. Meanwhile, CTV Vancouver reported on Tuesday night that the victim was Tequel Willis. His father, David Weisgarber, said Tequel had a hard life and was failed by the system. He told CTV News that the teenager had been living with his mom in Burnaby. Weisgarber admitted he knew his son was on the wrong path, but couldn’t get him the help he needed in spite of all his efforts. On December 28, at around 7:30 p.m., a shooting occurred near 148A Street and 110th Avenue in Surrey. Emergency responders arrived on scene to find a 14-year-old male dead with gunshot wounds. He had arrived in the area by taxi. IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang said that no one else was harmed as a result of this incident and the taxi driver is cooperating with the investigation. A dark sedan was seen quickly leaving the area after the shooting. At around 8 p.m., a vehicle on fire in the area of 214th Street and 76th Avenue was reported to the Langley RCMP. Investigators are working to determine if this vehicle is related to the Surrey homicide. “IHIT will be working closely with the other I-Teams, the Surrey RCMP, the Langley RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service to further the investigation, said Jang. “It has been a busy past 24 hours for IHIT as we continue to push ahead on the latest cases. “Most of us cannot begin to fathom that someone as young as 14-yearsold could be shot and murdered; it’s very disturbing, said Sgt. Elenore Sturko, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer. “There will be an overt presence of police in the community

Fiji’s UN ambassador calls for international support after devastation by Tropical Cyclone Yasa FIJIAN families and communities across the country are rebuilding following the devastation left behind by the Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Yasa that struck Fiji on Thursday, December 17. Yasa has destroyed homes and livelihoods for tens of thousands of families. These communities are spread across a vast area of the country ranging from the provinces of Bua and Cakaudrove to the islands in the Lomaiviti and Lau groups, and villages across the delta areas of Rewa, Tailevu and Yasawas, and homes across Ra. Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has mobilized a full-scale national emergency response to coordinate the recovery and relief effort. The recovery will be challenging given the scale of the damages arising from winds that were in excess of 300 kilometers per hour coupled with extensive flooding and the mass destruction caused by storm surges. The trail of destruction is widespread. Over 7,000 Fijians are likely
to remain in over 170 evacuation centers well into the new year. Health, Military, Navy, Infrastructure, Forestry, Agriculture, Economy and all other agencies of the Fiji Government have been fully mobilized. Roads are being reopened, water and power supply are being restored, and emergency food rations are being distributed to affected areas. Over the next few days, the first responders will be reaching outer
and remote islands. The full extent of the damage caused by TC Yasa will become clearer over the next weeks. Speaking from Bua, the ground zero of Yasa, Fiji’s Prime Minister Josaia V. Bainimarama said, “My fellow Fijians, the storm is passing, the sun has risen and we are still here… these storms may be getting stronger, but they will never be stronger than we are. Resilience is in our bone; we will
recover, we will rebuild, we will prove ourselves stronger than Yasa.” Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (PRUN), Ambassador Satyendra Prasad, has called on “the Fijian diaspora in the USA, in Canada and elsewhere, and on Fiji’s friends to be generous to assist Fiji to provide and sustain emergency support for thousands of families across the Fijian islands at this exceptionally difficult time for our country. Together, we will get through this. We will build back stronger; we will build back together”. Ambassador Prasad said that given the exceptional difficulties arising from COVID 19 pandemic, the best way to assist speedily is to transfer cash to Prime Minister’s Cyclone Relief Fund or to another national NGO such as Red Cross. Those who wish to contribute to the relief effort can do so through the Prime Minister’s Cyclone Fund. Through this fund, the government purchases emergency food, water and fuel rations; re-
builds crucial infrastructure, especially community water schemes, and delivers emergency assistance with great speed. SOUTH Asians in British Columbians remain firm in their support for Indian farmers demanding that the Indian government withdraw the three
new farmers laws that they say leave them at the mercy of greedy traders and would ruin their livelihoods. Braving the cold, miserable weather, last Saturday
they held a fervent protest outside the Indian Consulate General in downtown Vancouver. Many fear that there would be an increase in farmers’ suicides as
they are unable to pay off their loans. The protest movement in India is only getting larger and more intense with each passing day.

Toronto Raptors’ Superfan Nav Bhatia accepts, then turns down Global Indian Award NAV Bhatia, Toronto Raptors’ Superfan who is officially the Raptors’ South Asian Community Ambassador, turned down the $50,000 Global Indian Award a day after accepting it. The Canada India Foundation had conferred the award on Bhatia at its virtual gala here on Sunday. Accepting the award, Bhatia said in his pre-recorded speech that he was greatly honoured to join the company of previous awardees – Ratan Tata, Deepak Chopra, Narayana Murthy, and Montek Singh Ahluwalia. As each past honouree donated the award money to charities, Bhatia too pledged it to his ‘Daughters of India Initiative’ to build school washrooms for rural girls in Punjab and Rajasthan. The Canada India Foundation, the Torontobased Indo-Canadian advocacy group, has honoured an outstanding Indian each year with its Global Indian Award since 2009. But a day later, Bhatia refused to accept the award, in support of the farmers’ agitation in India. On Sunday, the World Sikh Organization had tweeted: “superfan_nav, as someone we have recognized in the past as an advocate that raises awareness on the 1984 Sikh Genocide, we ask you decline the @ Cif_Official1 award. The CIF have been steadfast Sikh Genocide deniers and have a history of being Indian state violence apologists.” Bhatia said, “On Sunday evening I watched my pre-recorded acceptance speech and the show for the first time like many. The past 24 hours were supposed to be a celebration for all those little girls in Rajasthan but it has been far from that. I was made privy at this point to a lot of new information…I even visited the CIF (Canada India Foundation) offices to understand their exact stance on many issues.” He said, “I stay away from politics to be honest. But I am a proud Sikh. And that is first and foremost. As a result, my heart cannot accept this award at this time. Not while my brothers and sisters across India are in pain. I stand with all of the farmers of India. I pray for a safe and peaceful resolve.” Bhatia said if the Canada India Foundation “would like to continue with their dona-
Nav Bhatia Photo: Nav Bhatia Superfan Page Facebook tion then great, if not then I will personally donate the $50,000 needed to begin phase IV,” of his project in Alwar. The WSO later tweeted: “@superfan_nav, by declining @Cif_Official1‘s Global Indian of the Year Award you have done the right thing. Attempts to marginalize Sikh Canadians, minimize #DelhiChalo, and deny the Sikh Genocide will never succeed.” On Monday, the Canada India Foundation said in a statement: “CIF regrets the decision and circumstances under which Nav Bhatia chose to return the Global Indian of the Year Award. Canadians of all walks of life treasure his non-political enthusiasm for sport and for Canada & India. “The true spirit of this Award is recognizing and celebrating the role, success and contribution of an outstanding global Indian every year. To be drawn into India’s current politics or to pronounce on historical debates is not in the spirit of the Award. “We will continue the hard and important work of pursuing genuine reconciliation between communities, and of strengthening ties between two great democracies.” (IANS and other news sources) Nav Bhatia’s full statement on his ‘Superfan Page’ Facebook: I am Sikh. Actually.
I am a proud Sikh. I came to Canada in 1984 after the Sikh genocide. Many Sikhs lost their lives. My own father was almost dragged out of a car and a burning tire was almost placed over his head. He was moments from death. He was lucky. We were lucky. Many were not as lucky. Canada is my haven. It is my heaven on earth. Many see the glamour of the cars, the celebrity friends, the expensive watch but very few witnessed me cleaning washrooms when I first arrived to put food on the table for my family. I am a proud Sikh. We do things with pride and passion; my washrooms were the cleanest washrooms in the city. I then became a car salesman. My story is well known from that point. The dealerships, the discrimination, the Raptors, adopting my beautiful little girl and now doing everything I can to give back to as many kids as I can. I have but one mission. To bring people together. I am a proud Sikh. I made a promise to my mom I would not cut my hair, I would not remove my turban and I would not drink alcohol. May her soul rest in peace but every morning I wake up with that promise kept. I am a proud Sikh. Now currently in my life I want to give back to as many kids as possible. Over the years I have accepted many awards, including a few from well known Sikh organizations, each award was encouragement to keep working for our youth. Each award inspired me to do more because to me an award is about a group of people who are acknowledging your service and showing their support for your cause. This award was to be that also. Pre-covid In March, I accepted this award from the Canada India Foundation. Coupled with it was a donation in the amount of $50,000 to my passion project – World Vision Canada’s Daughters of India Initiative. Building washrooms for girls in rural parts of India so they can safely continue their education. I am so proud of my entire team. We com-
pleted three phases in Faridkot, Punjab – over 180 washrooms were built or renovated across 36 schools. Over 4000 girls have been impacted. We are now beginning Phase IV focusing on Alwar, in the state of Rajasthan. One hundred washrooms and 2 basketball courts will be built. I get goosebumps thinking about this initiative. This is everything to me. This is what the award meant to me. A step closer to finishing 100 washrooms. On Sunday evening I watched my pre-recorded acceptance speech and the show for the first time like many. The past 24 hours were supposed to be a celebration for all those little girls in Rajasthan but it has been far from that. I was made privy at this point to a lot of new information. I have been quiet. Not because I did not know what to say. I wanted to do my own due diligence. I made countless phone calls. I spoke to many prominent figures. I even visited the CIF (Canada India Foundation) offices to understand their exact stance on many issue. See I am not a political person, I stay away from politics to be honest. But I am a proud Sikh. And that is first and foremost. As a result, my heart cannot accept this award at this time. Not while my brothers and sisters across India are in pain. I stand with all of the farmers of India. I pray for a safe and peaceful resolve. As for the girls of Rajasthan, If the Canada India Foundation would like to continue with their donation then great if not then I will personally donate the $50,000 needed to begin Phase IV. My life has been about changing perceptions and prejudice. I hope we all come together and share in each others pain just as we celebrate in each others happiness. When one of us is hurting we are all hurting. All that matters to me is our youth and the examples we set for them. Keep me in your prayers. I am a proud Indian, I am a proud Canadian and I am a proud Sikh. Love, Superfan, Nav Bhatia

Health Canada on U.K. authorization of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine
HEALTH Canada said in a statement on Wednesday that it is aware that the United Kingdom’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued an authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca. It said it has been reviewing AstraZeneca’s vaccine since it was submitted on October 1 and is expediting the review of COVID-19 vaccines.
This is being done through rolling submissions, where data is being reviewed as it becomes available from the manufacturer. Rolling submissions allow for shorter review times without compromising safety, efficacy and quality, as part of the Interim Order Respecting the Importation, Sale and Advertising of Drugs for Use in Relation to COVID-19, which was signed on September 16.
Health Canada said there is still information and data to be provided by AstraZeneca for review, and added that it cannot provide a definite timeline for the completion of the review at this time. The Department is working closely with international regulators, including the U.K. MHRA, to share information and data on vaccines currently under review. Health Canada said it is
working hard to give Canadians access to COVID-19 vaccines as quickly as possible without compromising its safety, efficacy and quality standards, and that
protecting the health and safety of Canadians is a top priority. On December 9, Health Canada authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19

First case of person in B.C. infected with COVID-19 U.K. variant DR. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer (PHO), and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, on Sunday announced the first confirmed case of a person in British Columbia infected with the COVID-19 variant first identified in the United Kingdom.
“All British Columbians have to remember the virus spreads quickly but shows up slowly. By staying local, avoiding all nonessential travel and using our layers of protection, we can reduce the potential for a surge in new cases and keep our communities and loved ones safe.

Dr. Bonnie Henry Photo: B.C. Government They said in a joint statement: “B.C. has identified the first case of a person in B.C. infected with the COVID-19 U.K. variant. The individual, who resides in the Island Health region, returned to B.C. from the U.K. on flight AC855 on December 15, 2020, developed symptoms while in quarantine and was immediately tested. Testing confirmed the positive diagnosis on December 19, 2020; a small number of close contacts have been isolated and public health is following up with them daily. “The variant strain was detected by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) Public Health Laboratory in its review of all isolates from people who had recently returned from travel to the U.K. Whole genome sequencing at the BCCDC identified this as the same as the variant seen in the U.K. Ongoing review may identify additional cases in the coming days. “B.C. continues to support the Canada-wide travel ban on all flights arriving from the U.K. until January 6, 2021, and urges all British Columbians to continue to avoid all nonessential travel to keep people and communities safe. Henry and Dix pointed out: “It is important to note there is no evidence that the new COVID-19 variant is more likely to cause severe illness, nor is there evidence to suggest the Health Canada-approved vaccines will be any less effective against the new variant. “However, studies suggest the COVID-19 variant first identified in the U.K. can spread more quickly and easily, which is why British Columbians everywhere must continue to be cautious and follow all PHO orders and guidelines, stay close to home, avoid non-essential travel, practice safe, physical distancing and wear a mask when in public indoor spaces.

Frustrated with food delivery? 9-1-1 is not on the menu wHetHer you’re fed up with your food delivery, curious about COVID or have questions about quarantine, 9-1-1 is not the right number to call. E-Comm, which handles 99 per cent of B.C.’s 9-1-1 call volume at its two emergency communications centres, has released its annual top 10 list of calls that don’t belong on 9-1-1, reminding people that every time someone calls 9-1-1 with a non-urgent concern, they are putting the lives of other British Columbians at risk. In addition to the increase of pandemic-relat-
ed enquiries that tied up 9-1-1 lines in 2020, EComm call takers also dealt with some familiar consumer complaints that seem to wind up on its top 10 nuisance calls list year after year including cars that can’t start, bank cards that are stuck in ATMs and callers wondering about the time. E-Comm call taker Megan McMath answered the number one call on this year’s list. She says general complaints on the emergency line that aren’t police, fire or ambulance matters, divert critical resources from people in real emergencies.
“Calling 9-1-1 to ask a question or report a consumer complaint may seem harmless enough, says McMath. “But, what people may not realize is that we need to treat every call as an emergency, until we can determine otherwise. That means that every moment we spend responding to general questions, concerns or complaints takes away from our priority – helping people who need help right away. Here is E-Comm’s list of top 10 reasons not to call 9-1-1 in 2020: 1. Complaining that their food delivery driver did not deliver their meal 2. Enquiring if there is a full lockdown for COVID-19 3. Wondering if having a trampoline is illegal during COVID-19 4. Asking for assistance to apply for Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) 5. Complaining that the mattress they had purchased second hand was more soiled than advertised 6. Reporting that their bank card was stuck in the ATM 7. Reporting their neighbour for smoking in a non-smoking building 8. Enquiring about how to enter a career in law enforcement 9. Confirming the time 10. Asking for help because they were locked
out of their car “We understand that people are frustrated and worried about COVID-19-related issues, but general questions and complaints about the pandemic don’t belong on 9-1-1, says Kaila Butler, E-Comm senior communications specialist. “Our goal each year with this list of nuisance calls is to drive home the message that we need the public’s help to keep 9-1-1 lines free for people experiencing real emergencies who need immediate assistance from police, fire or ambulance agencies. E-Comm is asking the public not to call 9-1-1 to report concerns about public health violations and encouraging British Columbians to refer to the wide range of resources available for COVID-19 instead. * To report public health violations, contact your local by-law office or call your local police non-emergency line - In Vancouver, call 3-1-1 or report your concern online * If you feel that you might have COVID-19, call ahead to your primary care provider’s office or 8-1-1 to assess whether you need testing * For non-medical information about COVID-19, call 1-888-COVID-19 or visit bccdc.ca E-Comm has handled more than 1.7 million 9-1-1 calls so far in 2020. For more information about E-Comm, visit ecomm911.ca.
2 dead, 1 seriously injured in Chilliwack incident tHe BC RCMP said on Tuesday that they have notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident near Chilliwack which has resulted in the deaths of two people and serious injuries to a third. On December 29, at approximately 4 a.m., Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment RCMP received a call of a vehicle travelling the wrong way on Highway 1 near Laidlaw. A Chilliwack officer located the suspect vehicle travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes near Annis Road, turned around and followed. A spike belt was deployed by a second officer, but the suspect vehicle was
able to avoid it. The suspect vehicle continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lanes, then collided with a second vehicle travelling eastbound resulting in a fire. Officers attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. They were able to extract one person from the second vehicle and transport him to hospital. He suffered serious injuries. However, they were unable to extract the driver and a passenger from the suspect vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene. IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the deaths.

Bangladeshi Engineers and Computer Science Professionals in BC Association holds AGM BECBC plans to go from strength to strength in 2021
BANGLADESHI Engineers and Computer Science Professionals in BC Association (BECBC) hosted its annual general meeting on December 19 virtually with attendance from its members in the Lower Mainland, Okanagan Valley, Greater Victoria and the rest of B.C. Ninety-five members and guests participated in the meeting to find out about BECBC’s journey during a challenging 2020. For millions of people around the world, COVID-19 has changed the perspective on life. The pandemic brought us closer, gave us a chance to have more empathy, and helped us rise above boundaries of race, gender and inequality. Hosts Shamsul Hoque and Nashila Jahan started the AGM with a minute’s silence to remember the lives lost during this pandemic and show respect to the fallen heroes of Bangladesh’s

Nazmul Hasan Liberation War in 1971. BECBC currently has about 300 registered members across the province. Members are employed at various levels of the federal and provincial governments, PHSA, City of Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, BC Hydro, FortisBC, Telus, Microsoft, Amazon, EA Sports, SNC Lavalin, Parsons, Seaspan, BC Housing, BC Transit, TransLink and many more. Additionally, the member base includes faculty and student members from UBC, SFU, UVic, BCIT and UBCO. Initially established in 2005, BECBC was revived as an organization in 2020. This year, BECBC obtained approval to run an engineering association from Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), the licensing body for professional engineers in British Columbia. The constitution and bylaws were amended to meet the latest version of the BC Societies Act prior to incorporating with BC Registries. In keeping with the norm of social distancing and virtual meetings, Vice Chair – Finance, Md Kamrujjaman, opened the AGM by presenting BECBC’s Financial Report
Dr. Mumit Khan on Zoom. The Chair, Mizan Majumder, then highlighted BECBC’s 2020 milestones and planned initiatives for 2021 from the Annual Report. Engineer Nazmul Hasan was commemorated for an outstanding professional career and contribution towards BECBC. Dr. Bonnie Henry was invited to be a keynote speaker at the event. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend. She wished BECBC well and thanked it for following BCCDC guidelines. BC Transit’s Director of Enterprise Technology, Dr. Mumit Khan, and UBC Okanagan’s Civil Engineering Professor, Dr. Shahria Alam, graced the event as keynote speakers instead. They joined the AGM from Victoria and Kelowna respectively, to provide an insight on their professional careers and inspire future generations to scale similar heights. Vice Chair – IT, Shahed Anwar, also unveiled BECBC’s official website during the AGM. Amid the pandemic in 2020, BECBC conducted a number of virtual professional development workshops and technical events on Public Speaking, Project Man-

Focus groups were also held in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna to explore opportunities on how to add value for members. Additionally, under the mentorship of Bazlul Karim, one of the founding members of BECBC, a Startup focus group was initiated. This provided young entrepreneurs a platform to brainstorm ideas and execution plans for their inventions. TechCollab Techno Business Solutions Inc is one of the first startup success stories to emerge under the banner of BECBC in 2020. In response to the pandemic, BECBC set up a province-wide volunteering team in March to help deliver essentials and medicines. Members also participated in a blood donation campaign in October. Vice Chair – Community Services, Mohammed Moniruzzaman Shamim, highlighted these initiatives during the AGM and also spoke about BECBC’s five-weeklong Holiday Food Drive. Approxi-

VANCOUVER Police arrested a 24-year-old man on Christmas Day for repeatedly violating the Public Health Order that bans parties and social gatherings. “Our officers issued multiple warnings and issued tickets to this man over several weeks, asking him to stop hosting parties during the pandemic,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Wednesday. “He made clear that he has no plans to stop, so our officers obtained an arrest warrant and he spent Christmas in jail.” The Vancouver resident was arrested December 25, and released from jail on Boxing Day. He is now bound by bail conditions and can be arrested again if he violates them. He must now answer the door if police knock, must comply with all provincial health orders, and can only have two other people in his residence. Vancouver Police have received 12 complaints about noise and parties at the man’s downtown apartment since September, and they issued two $2,300 tickets earlier this month. After a neighbour complained about another loud party on December 18, officers worked with Crown counsel to obtain a warrant. As a result, the man has been charged under Section 99 of the Public Health Order. “This should serve as a reminder to anyone who thinks it’s still ok to ignore the Public Health Order and put other people at risk,” noted Addison. The COVID-19 Related Measures Act bans social gatherings of any size inside residences, but allows people who live alone to host two people with whom they regularly

worth more than $900 million. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s family ties to the charity later came to light, his mother and brother both previously having been paid fees to speak at WE events. Questions as to the propriety of Trudeau’s involvement in the contract decision and the process itself swirled. Trudeau was called to testify in front of the House of Commons standing committee on finance to discuss his role in the decision-making process, and Finance Minister Bill Morneau, after revealing that he had forgotten to pay back more than $40,000 in travel expenditures covered by WE, stepped down to “pursue other opportunities”, though critics questioned the timing of this announcement. An ethics investigation remains ongoing and WE has since closed its Canadian operations in the fallout from the controversy. The Angus Reid Institute covered multiple angles of the scandal, including whether the truth was told, how it affected Trudeau’s approval, and the impact it has had on views of Canadian charities more broadly. Story 1 – COVID-19
Story 3 – The Wet’suwet’en Protests
When historians write about 2020 there will be a mention of COVID-19 in the first paragraph. The pandemic crept into the lives of nearly every person in the world in some way, month by month, with sickness, death, and economic turmoil pervading every corner of the globe. Governments around the world and within Canada dealt with the crisis in a variety of ways, some tougher and some more relaxed. Some nations escaped the worst, and some continue to suffer through it. Throughout it all, the Angus Reid Institute was tracking public sentiment. Beginning in February, we tracked the rise and fall in concern levels within the population, asked Canadians about their mental, physical, and financial help, and what they wanted from their leadership. Later in the year we began to explore their willingness to be inoculated as Canada received its long anticipated first doses of the vaccine. Explore it all here, with interactive graphs and links to our studies. www.angusreid.org/covid-19-in-canada www.angusreid.org/tracking-covid-19 Story 2 – WE Charity Scandal
The beginning of 2020 was a time of political turmoil and tension across the country as disruptions, railway blockades and protests in cities across the country amplified the message of Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs who opposed a $6.6 billion natural gas pipeline being built by Coastal Gaslink, running through their traditional territory in northern British Columbia. Canadians were divided on the ordeal, with 56 per cent saying the dispute and the protests were an issue of law and order, wanting them to be broken up and dealt with punitively. Another 44 per cent said this was about Indigenous rights and respect for the environment and should be decided by negotiations and patience. Ultimately, discussions between Wet’suwet’en representatives and both the federal and B.C. governments led to a provisional agreement for land use. The Coastal Gaslink project construction and ongoing litigation both continue. www.angusreid.org/coastal-gaslink-wetsuweten/ www.angusreid.org/trudeau-coastal-gaslink-wetsuweten-blockades/ Story 4 – Federal Assault Weapons Ban
For the second year in a row, a political scandal involving the Liberal Party makes our top 10 stories of the year. Last year it was the SNC-Lavalin ordeal, this year, WE Charity. WE was awarded a latercancelled $19.5 million no-bid contract to oversee a government funded student-volunteer program

While COVID-19 cost thousands of Canadians their lives this year, another tragedy befell Nova Scotia in April, shaking the country from coast to coast. The nation’s worst mass shooting in history unfolded over the course of two days on April 18 and 19; 22 people were killed. In the fallout from this devastating event, the Liberal government moved forward with a long-promised ban on assault style

Story 5 – Provincial Elections Despite the challenges of the pandemic, there were three provincial elections held this year. The incumbent government was returned to power in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick. The Angus Reid Institute offered insight into each, with its Provincial Spotlight in June, and deeper polling both Saskatchewan and British Columbia, ultimately projecting those two races with remarkable accuracy. Chinese officials reiterated in December that the two men would be released if Canada freed Meng. When asked in June, most Canadians sided with Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberal government in not interfering with the case and negotiating a prisoner swap, leaving Meng’s fate to the independent judicial system. One-quarter (28%) disagreed and felt that an exchange would be worth pursuing and Meng’s case should be dropped. The Angus Reid Institute also found opinions of China had dropped to historic lows amid this and concerns about the pandemic. We will certainly revisit this issue in the early months of 2021 as the tension continues www.angusreid.org/meng-kovrig-spavor-china/ Story 10 – Policing Perspectives 2020 was a tumultuous year for those in law enforcement and those pushing for reforms to a justice system long-identified as failing to properly serve Black, Indigenous and non-white people in Canada and the United States. In both countries, the #BlackLivesMatter and Defund the Police movements took centre stage in the wake of high-profile killings and abuse of Black and Indigenous people. The death of an unarmed Black man in, George Floyd, spurred international protests, and his
Some lighter news also captured Canadian imaginations and attention this year. In January it was announced that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – were not only seeking to partially quit the Royal Family but also take up part-time residence in Canada. Canadians followed the news closely but expressed concerns about potentially footing the bill for the Royals’ security as they settled on Vancouver Island. To the relief of taxpayers and the disappointment of some monarchy enthusiasts, the stay was short-lived; the couple departed to live in California in March after the pandemic hit, citing concerns about cross-border travel and a desire to be closer to Meghan’s mother who lives in Los Angeles. www.angusreid.org/harry-meghan-canada-monarchy/ Story 9 – Meng and the Michaels Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor have now been detained in China for more than two years. In June, Chinese officials announced that they had charged the two with espionage. These charges have been described as baseless and arbitrary by Canadian and international officials. China has denied that the arrest of the two men was in response to Canada’s December 2018 arrest of Huawei

Our province’s approximately 800 blueberry growers are facing a U.S. trade investigation that could impact their livelihoods. “The U.S. ITC could recommend tariffs or quotas if it finds U.S. blueberry growers are injured or are threatened to be injured by imports. In the meantime, B.C. growers face mounting legal fees and economic uncertainty. This impacts many of the hard-working people who rely on agriculture to provide for their families. “The Government of British Columbia is working in partnership with the B.C. 66-year-old man dead in Abbotsford trailer fire ON Monday, December 28, at 5:33 a.m., Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service responded to 9-1-1 calls of a fire in the 2400-block of Bradner Road. Firefighters located a trailer on the property fully engulfed in flames. When firefighters were able to search the trailer, they located a deceased 66-yearold man inside. No one else was in the trailer at the time. Abbotsford Police investigators, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service Investigators and BC Coroners Service continue their investigation into the cause of the fire, which does not appear suspicious at this time, according to Abbotsford Police Sgt. Speeding jeopardizes B.C.’s road-safety gains BY MIKE FARNWORTH Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General IN an otherwise bad-news year, I’d like to share something positive: no matter how you get around, 2019 was, by many measures, the safest time to be on B.C.’s roads in years. New statistics show the numbers of policereported crashes, overall fatalities and injuries, motorcyclist fatalities, deaths linked to high-risk driving and deaths at intersections – where 60% of crashes occur – were all at their lowest levels
in at least five years. Still, two people died on our roads every three days in 2019. On average, police cited aggressive driving as a factor in more than 14 injury crashes every day. When police officers attend fatality crashes in B.C., the top contributing factors they report are speed, distraction and impairment, in that order. I find the persistent nature of these problems to be particularly concerning. B.C. has made considerable progress against alcohol-affected driving since the 1970s. In fact,

alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased 50% in the decade since police began issuing immediate roadside prohibitions (IRPs). But recent national statistics show crashes involving drug-impaired driving are increasing as a proportion of overall impaired driving incidents. That’s why, in B.C., we have every intention to create an IRP for drug-affected driving; we’re just awaiting the development of a federally approved device that can test for specific levels of drug impairment at the roadside. In the meantime, like many provinces, we’ve toughened penalties for drug-affected driving in ways that complement the Criminal Code provisions that Ottawa brought in before legalizing non-medical cannabis. For example, police in B.C. can now take drug-impaired drivers off the road for up to 90 days – a much more serious penalty than the previous 24-hour driving prohibition. And, as of January 2020, we had the second-highest number of officers trained as drug recognition experts. The fact that distracted driving contributes to one-quarter of fatal traffic incidents – more than impairment – is also concerning. More than a decade ago, B.C. banned texting and otherwise using a handheld device at the wheel. Yet, ticket volumes have remained steady, averaging 42,000 a year over the past half-decade. That’s why we strengthened the rules two years ago. Drivers with multiple distracted driving offences now face added and higher penalties over and above their insurance premiums, plus possible driving bans. We’ll continue to evaluate how effective these toughened measures are. As a public safety legislator, one of the key questions you weigh before introducing any new rule is: Will it change the targeted behaviour? It’s a
question that’s been on my mind, given highprofile excessive speeding incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic, and speeding’s continued status as the most-cited factor in road crash deaths. In the last few years, my ministry has toughened penalties for high-risk driving: now, even one incident may lead to a driving ban of up to 24 months. Electronic ticketing is helping us to more quickly identify and sanction high-risk drivers. Automated speed enforcement now operates at 35 high-risk intersections. And we’ve maintained significant fines and seven-day vehicle impoundment for excessive speeding. Still, police continue to catch idiots driving at ridiculous speeds. It’s not just frustrating – it’s deadly. In my second term as B.C.’s public safety minister, I’ll be listening to police, ministry staff, other road-safety partners and the public for ideas about how we can stop these drivers for good.
Six injured in Coquitlam collision, IIO investigating THE Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a motor vehicle incident in Coquitlam that resulted in six people being injured. The IIO said that information provided by the RCMP indicates that on December 27, at approximately 9 a.m., an officer was conducting radar speed detection on Highway 1 eastbound near Government Street when they observed a grey Dodge Charger allegedly speeding and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop and exited the
highway at Brunette Avenue, where it collided with another vehicle. The sole occupant of the Charger and all five occupants of the second vehicle were transported to a local area hospital. The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the injuries. The IIO is asking any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

FortisBC warns about spikes in energy use with colder than average winter predicted
WITH a La Nina temperature cycle forecasted for this winter and the coldest part of the year typically occurring in January, FortisBC is reminding its customers that now is an important time to pay attention to energy use to reduce seasonal spikes, especially as many people who are spending more time in their homes as a result of COVID-19 safety measures. “Because the majority of energy used in B.C. at this time of year is for heating, our customers tend to experience their highest energy bills after periods of colder winter temperatures,” said Michelle Carman, Director, Customer Service, FortisBC. “That means any heat loss is an
DELTA Police were contacted by the Delta Fire Department shortly after 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 27 about a fire in the 4800-block of Delta Street in the downtown core of Ladner. “Fortunately, there was no one who had to be evacuated from the property, and no one was reported injured during this incident,” said Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police, on Monday. Police remained on scene to direct traffic and contain the scene for investigation. The fire is believed to have started in a dumpster at the rear of the building. This led to the rear wall and then the roof of the building catching fire. Delta Fire Department was able to successfully extinguish the blaze.
opportunity for energy savings, so steps taken to detect and reduce heat loss could help you stay more comfortable while also saving some money on your energy bill.” FortisBC’s energy use records show that last winter’s peak use for both its natural gas and electricity services occurred on January 14, 2020. According to Environment Canada, temperatures dropped below -10 C in the Lower Mainland, and lower than
-30 C in places like Prince George. As a result, natural gas use was up more than 75 per cent across the province as compared to an average January day. Electric use was also up by four per cent over the coldest week from the previous year. In fact, FortisBC historically sees demand for natural gas, the most commonly used energy for space heating, triple in the winter compared to the summer months. On average, customers who use electricity for home heating increase their use by approximately 80 per cent in the winter months. Energy use is unique to each household and can vary by factors like region, household size, the energy
efficiency of the home and daily habits. To help customers better understand their unique situation, FortisBC recently added My Energy Use, an enhancement on Account Online for its natural gas customers that they can use to monitor their energy use, set and track goals and customize action plans. Electricity customers can also monitor their energy use hourly, daily and weekly to identify patterns of high use and find opportunities to save. There are a number of low cost and no cost ways to lower energy use in homes, including: * sealing gaps and cracks around windows and doors to prevent heat loss, * turning down the heat
in unused rooms can also save on space heating, * cleaning furnace filters and vacuuming out baseboard heaters to help ensure the heating system is working as efficiently as possible, and * installing a programmable thermostat. FortisBC notes that for customers who want to invest in larger energy-efficient upgrades, rebates are available year-long on selected high-efficiency home heating systems, window and door upgrades and connected thermostats. Income-qualified customers may be eligible for a no-cost energy assessment of their home, and furnace or insulation upgrades on behalf of FortisBC.
Taking advantage of billing options is another way to avoid seasonal spikes. Residential customers with upto-date accounts can sign up for equal payment plans so that bills are averaged across the year and result in a predictable monthly amount regardless of the season. FortisBC encourages anyone with concerns about their energy bills to contact their customer service team for one-on-one support. FortisBC natural gas customers can call 1-888224-2710 and FortisBC electricity customers can call 1-866-436-7847. To learn more about how seasonal weather can affect bills and ways to reduce this, visit fortisbc.com/winteruse.

19-year-old male shot in Richmond Shooting was targeted, suspects have been identified
ON Tuesday, December 29, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Richmond frontline officers responded to a report from a man of being shot in the 8000-block of Jones Road. Police arrived in the area and found the 19-year-old victim bleeding from what appeared to be a gunshot injury. Richmond RCMP Watch General Investigative Services (Watch GIS) initially attended to assist with the investigation, and Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Services (LMD IFIS) also attended to process the scene found nearby. The lone victim was transported to a local area hospital and has since been released. He is expected to recover from his in-
juries. “Through the course of the investigation, we have learned that the shooting was targeted, and suspects have been identified,” said Constable Kenneth Lau. “Therefore, there is no ongoing risk to the public.” The Richmond RCMP Serious Crimes Unit have since taken conduct of the file. Anyone with information about this incident or video surveillance in the area are being asked to contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime. ca, quoting file number 2020-35460.
Fatal pedestrian-involved collision in Richmond ON Saturday, December 26, shortly before 5:30 p.m., Richmond RCMP frontline officers were called to a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at the intersection of No.2 Road at Andrews Road that led to a lengthy road closure of No.2 Road for several hours while police were on scene. Richmond RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) were called to the scene and have taken over the investigation with assistance from the Integrated Construction Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS). The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk at the intersection when she was struck by the vehicle. She was rushed to a local area hospital but, unfortunately, later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and has been cooperating with investigators. Speed
and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors to the collision. “This is a season where we need to be extra careful,” said Constable Kenneth Lau. “Road conditions may not be ideal. The sun also sets early, sometimes making it difficult to see pedestrians due to lighting. As a driver, when you approach a marked crosswalk or intersection, please take the extra measures to give yourself more reaction time. Slow down, look for any pedestrians, and try make eye contact with them just to confirm if they are crossing or not before going through.” Richmond RCMP CCIT is seeking witnesses or dash camera footage of the incident. If you have any information, contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 or Richmond_CCIT@rcmp-grc. gc.ca.

CRIME OF THE WEEK VPD INVESTIGATES CITY'S 18TH HOMICIDE
Unsolved Crime: Homicide Date: December 11, 2020 Location: Vancouver, B.C.
Vancouver Police are investigating the murder of a 19year-old man on December 11, 2020 in East Vancouver. Police were called to East 5th Avenue and Cassiar Street for reports from witnesses of shots fired just after 8 p.m. Vancouver resident, Amar Najat Jalal was found in the middle of the intersection suffering from gun shot wounds. Attempts to revive him from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services and paramedics were unsuccessful. Jalal was pronounced dead on scene. “A grey pick up truck was found fully engulfed in flames in the north lane of East 5th Avenue, just around the corner from where the victim's body was found,” says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “Preliminary evidence indicates this vehicle could be connected to the shooting.” Investigators believe this was a targeted incident and there are no public safety concerns.

B.C. housing market to remain vibrant through the new year VANCOUVER -- A company that supports hundreds of credit unions across Canada predicts British Columbia’s housing market will remain healthy through 2021 as the province moves out of its COVID-19 slump. A report from Central 1, the organization that handles financial services, digital banking and other resources for more than 250 credit unions, says B.C. has seen a “spectacular rebound in housing demand since pandemic-induced lows in the spring. The report says affordability remains a focus, as median home prices are up nine per cent this year to $585,000 and are forecast to climb a further six per cent to $618,000 in 2021. It says the number of homes sold in B.C. leaped 20 per cent this year, overcoming the pandemic downturn, and up to 95,000 properties could change hands next year, nudging market highs set in 2017. It credits the surge to “unique characteristics of pandemic economics, ongoing low interest rates and higher-paid workers remaining relatively unscathed from
the worst of the COVID-19 contractions. The report also forecasts a firmer rental market through 2022 as economic conditions normalize, border restrictions ease and post-secondary institutions reopen. But it says rents shouldn’t budge much over the coming year, while a provincially imposed rent freeze is in effect. Brian Yu, Central 1 deputy chief economist, authored the report and calls B.C.’s ongoing pandemic recovery a “mix of short-term challenges and future optimism. “Economic growth is forecast to pick up steam in the second quarter of 2021 onwards as the vaccine drives higher investment spending and consumer spending is unleashed when social and travel restrictions are eased, Yu writes. Some job loss will continue in B.C.’s “fragile sectors, Yu says. Even though employment remains 1.5 per cent lower than it did in February, he says the province is outperforming most others and sectors such as retail spending, manufacturing, and exports are “largely recovered.

2021 Honda Clarity: Plug in Hybrid offers great fuel economy. By Veeno Dewan Honda have now made a pledge that two-thirds of all their vehicle line up will be electric powered in some form by 2030. And to end is the 2021 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This is a four- door sedan with five passenger seating. It is also offered with a hydrogen fuel cell power source in California. A tad larger inside than the Honda Accord, the Clarity comes in two trim levels for Canada with the base Clarity starting at $46,290;with the top line Touring Trim starting at $50,290. It may sound expensive, but there are some great federal and provincial government rebates to be had from Canadian provinces if you purchase a hybrid or electric car. No significant upgrades for 2021. An 8.0inch touchscreen infotainment interface is standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. There are two USB ports: a 1.5-amp input for use with smartphone integration and a regular 1.0amp input for audio playback and charging. Every Clarity comes with a suite of driver-assistance tech-
nologies, called Honda Sensing, along with Honda excellent LaneWatch system that displays a camera image of what’s in your blind spot when you indicate Power for the Clarity is via a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for a combined 212 horsepower and 232 lb/ ft of torque. The 181-hp electric motor is powered by a 17.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Charging the battery pack takes just 2.5 hours when connected to a 220 volt charging station, but will take 12 hours when trickle charging on a normal 110 volt outlet. A full charge will give the Clarity an electric driving range of 76 km with a total drive range with the gasoline engine of 547 km. Fuel economy for the Clarity is rated at: 5.3/5.9/L/100 km
(city/highway gas only), 2.1L/100 km (combined electric/gas). In addition, the Clarity’s regenerative brakes also supply power to the battery to be stored for later use. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is a serial hybrid, so range anxiety is not an issue. Thus a decent sized sedan that ride and drives like a much larger luxury sedan. This is very attractive car to buy. B.C. residents of course also qualify for provincial rebates so check government website for details or contact your local Honda dealer. Highly recommended if a roomy, reliable, eco-friendly sedan is in your future. 2021 Honda Clarity PHEV: Base price $46,290; (Plus government rebates).Touring model as tested priced from: $50,290 plus rebates More info at www.honda.ca
2021 Chevrolet Spark 1LT: Stylish and well -equipped compact hatchback By Veeno Dewan The 2021 Chevrolet Spark is an affordable, stylish and well- equipped compact car that offers more than you would think. It is a neat, good looking car with nice styling; for example, the rear set of doors have hidden door handles that cleverly integrate into the rear of the window frame, giving the Spark a cool 2-door look. It is not all curvy and weird looking - like some of its competition, and instead offers a handsome straight edged looks that only the American’s seem to do so well. For 2021, there are not a lot of changes: apart from new paint colors, the 2021 Chevrolet Spark carries over mostly unchanged, aside from alternative wheel designs. Motivation is courtesy of the Spark’s 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque. There is a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT automatic. The 2021 Chevrolet Spark has an impressive list of standard and available safety features: 10 airbags, traction control, hill-start assist,
StabiliTrak stability control with Brake Assist, LATCH connectors for the two rear seats, anti-lock braking and a rear-vision camera. Lanedeparture warning, forward automatic braking and forward-collision warning are available on the upper scale models along with rear park assist is standard and other features. The Spark is available in four variants: the base LS with: a manual transmission 15-inch steel wheels, a rear spoiler, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a 4G LTE hotspot, a 7.0-inch color touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The Spark LS CVT adds: electric windows AC and a few other bits and pieces. . Fuel economy at an esti-
mated 7.1L per 100km in the City and 6.2 on the highway is impressive. Downsides are few, the Spark takes a while to come up to cruising speed on the highway. Overall being very well- equipped and nicely packaged, the Spark’s affordability, tiny size and high fuel efficiency make it very attractive to those on a strict budget, or families looking for a commuter car, and younger drivers looking for a first ride. With its fun to drive quotient, it is also a great everyday urban driver. Highly recommended. 2021 Chevrolet Spark: Priced from: $10,198 - $19,298. Spark LT1 model price as tested with options and destination charge$18,593 More info at Chevrolet.ca.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio AWD Review: Italian Passion! Italian Flair Auto review by Veeno Dewan The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a luxury SUV from the famed Italian company, and like all Alfa’s it a looker with its sinuous side profile, a curvy rear, flanks, scoops and muscular bulges But it is not all looks, in the luxury 2.0L performance SUV class the Stelvio is among the fastest, most powerful and drives amazingly well with 280hp and 306 pound-feet of torque – the least to be expected from an auto company renowned for its racing heritage. The Stelvio, gets a few interior upgrades for 2020/21 and is available in base, base Sport, Ti, Ti Sport and Luxury Ti Lusso trims, plus the high-performance Quadrifoglio as road tested. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is pretty much the ultimate Italian performance SUV – the Quadrifoglio model arrives with a Ferrari derived V6, 505 horsepower, that can lash out with 434 pound-feet of torque and has a top speed of and a o-600 kph time of .3.9 seconds. The as tested Quadrifoglio, adds the upgraded engine, a2.9L V6 PDI twin–turbo engine with Stop/Start Transmission: 8–speed automatic transmis-
sion, Alfa DNA Pro drive mode selector with Race mode, Torque vectoring twin clutch rear differential Active suspension and Anti–Slip Regulation/ Torque Control. Exterior details add: Nero Edizione – Quadrifoglio Dark Miron exterior mirror caps Dark Miron V Scudetto grille Dark Miron badging 20x9 & 20x10–inch dark 5–hole wheels and Dynamic dual– mode exhaust. It just looks fabulous! Upgraded interior extras included: wonderful looking Interior red and black Leather and Alcantara seats with red seat stitching Dual–pane sunroof, Connectivity (bridge solution) Leather dash and upper doors, and generous, genuine carbon fibre interior trim on the doors, console and dash.
The huge Ferrari style paddle shifters behind the steering wheel look and feel awesome. The base price for this top level Stelvio was $96,200. Extras and options raised the price of our tester to a heady $112,045. The Stelvio has that certain flair with its exhilarating performance, engine noise and exhaust note that enchants. It looks better than a Porsche Macan and just as fast. Just looking at the Alfa grille brings a thrill to any owner! The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a one piece of Italian Automobilia that comes highly recommended. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio priced from $96,200. Farmers’ union leaders at talks with the government on Wednesday. New Delhi (IANS): The sixth round of meetings between protesting farmers and the government ended after over five hours with the Centre saying that the two sides had reached consensus on two out of four key issues. The next meeting will take place on January 4. Addressing media persons after the meeting with 41 farmers’ leaders at Vigyan Bhavan here, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said: “Today’s talks were held in a very good environment and concluded on a positive note. We have had consensus on two out of the four issues. “Next meeting of government with farmers will take place on January 4. He said that the government and the farmers had reached agreement over the latter’s demands to keep farmers out of the penal provisions of the Commission for the Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas
Ordinance, 2020, and to withdraw the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020. “We discussed stubble burning and the government assured the farmers that their concerns will be taken into account. The electricity bill was also discussed... this has not been enacted. Farmers believe that subsidy will be withdrawn (under this), Tomar said. The meeting started around 2.30 p.m. at Vigyan Bhavan with Tomar, Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash heading the government side. Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agarwal and other Ministry officials were also present. Krantikari Kisan Union’s Punjab President Darshan Pal, Bharatiya Kisan Union’s Jagjeet Singh Dalewal and Balbir Singh Rajewal, Jamhuri Kishan Sabha Punjab’s General Secretary Kulwant Singh, and Bharatiya Kisan Union Uttar Pradesh President Rakesh Tikait
Farmers at the Ghazipur border of Delhi held another protest last Sunday. were among the 41 farmers’ union leaders taking part in the meeting. After five previous rounds of inconclusive talks, the government had hoped that this meeting would be “decisive to end the agitation against three contentious new agricultural legislations enacted in September during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The withdrawal of these laws is the first and the major demand of the agitating farmers. Earlier, the Union Agriculture Ministry in an official letter had confirmed the resumption of talks mentioning a four-point agenda of the meeting that includes “modalities to be adopted for the repeal of the three Central farm acts; mechanisms to be adopted to make remunerative MSP (Minimum Support Price) recommended by the National Farmers’ Commission into a legally guaranteed entitlement for all farmers and all agricultural commodities; amendments to be made and notified in the

After a meeting at Singhu border, a major protest venue on the DelhiHaryana border, the farmer leaders, under the banner of All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), arrived at Vigyan Bhavan for the fresh talks reiterating that the “first and foremost demand of the farmers of India is to repeal the three farm laws and the Electricity Bill, 2020, every other demand only follows this. Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at several borders of the national capital demanding the repeal of the three farm laws, among other demands.

Nepal Prime Minister Oli refuses to oblige visiting Chinese delegation New Delhi (IANS): The visiting Chinese delegation led by Guo Yezhou, a vice minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was accorded a frosty reception at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International airport on Sunday. Only the Chinese ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi was at the airport to receive the visiting delegation that arrived by a regular Air China flight. No one from the Nepali side was present to welcome the Chinese guest at the Tribhuvan International Airport, The Kathmandu Post reported. Guo air-dashed to Nepal to make a last-ditch effort to reunite the Nepal Communist Party (NCP), which is on the verge of an irreconcilable split driven by the coalition’s two major factions-one led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the other headed
by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known by his nom de guerre Prachanda. Nepal was thrown into turmoil last Sunday when Oli recommended the dissolution of the lower house to President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Upon arrival, the four-member delegation held talks with Bhandari and Oli on Sunday evening. Later in the evening, the visiting delegation met Oli, who was accompanied by finance minister and party general secretary Bishnu Poudel, The Kathmandu Post reported. The meeting lasted over two hours. The Hindustan Times, citing Nepal watchers is reporting that President’s Xi Jinping’s CPC wants the Oli-led government to rescind the presidential order dissolving parliament and has offered to use its influence with the rival faction led by Prachanda
and Madhav Nepal to get them to back off and guaranteed that he would be able to complete his fiveyear term. It added that the buzz in Nepal’s political circles is that Oli stood his ground and indicated that he would rather let the Supreme Court take the call on the presidential order. Five judges of Nepal’s top court have started hearing dozen-odd petitions filed against Bhandari’s order dissolving the House of Representatives. Oli is also learnt to have pointed to his previous discussions with Hou, who at one point wanted him to step down, and asserted that it would not be possible for him to roll back his cabinet’s recommendation. On Monday, the visiting delegation held detailed discussion with Prachanda and former Prime Minister
Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is part of the Prachanda camp. China is concerned with the disorder in the NCP as it has invested considerably in Nepal over the past few years, in a bid to structurally integrate Kathmandu within its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Nepal has emerged as one of the battlegrounds of the new great game between India and China to remain the dominant force in South Asia. Analysts say that China has high stakes in the unity of the NCP, which it sees as the most suitable vehicle for carrying forward its broader geopolitical agenda in the high Himalayas. Prior to Guo’s visit, Hou has completed considerable spadework for the visit. Hou met faction leaders of the endangered NCP, including Pra-
chanda and Nepal. Hou, however, was unable to meet Oli. The Nepalese website Ratopati.com is reporting that the rift between Oli and China deepened when Hou urged him to “step down as prime minister instead of splitting the party” during a meeting last July. China pushed into Nepal after India’s botched economic blockade in 2015, but New Delhi has recently mounted a robust effort. The ice was broken in October by India’s spy chief Samant Kumar Goel’s visit following Kathmandu’s decision to make cartographic changes along the IndiaNepal boundary. Goel held a key meeting with Oli, which was followed by visits to Kathmandu of the Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
The year law enforcement agencies probed Bollywood’s stars after a mysterious death New Delhi (IANS): Bollywood has had run-ins with drug law enforcement agencies in the past, but the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year opened a pandora’s box for the entertainment industry which brought the premiere investigative agencies -the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) into the scene, creating a lot of buzz. Rajput was found hanging in his Bandra apartment on June 14, just days after the death of his former celebrity manager Disha Salian. After the death of the actor, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recommended a CBI probe on the request of Sushant’s father K. K. Singh. Following the notification from the Centre, the CBI registered a case on August 6 against Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, her father Indrajit Chakraborty, mother Sandhya Chakraborty, brother Showik Chakraborty, his former house
Sushant Singh Rajput manager Samuel Miranda, former manager Shruti Modi and others. The CBI handed over the case to its Special Investigation Team (SIT) which has earlier probed the VVIP AgustaWestland and the Vijay Mallya bank fraud cases. However, the CBI team took time to reach Mumbai as Rhea approached the Supreme Court seeking transfer of the Bihar Police FIR to Mumbai. The CBI team reached Mumbai on August 20, a day after the Supreme Court gave its nod for the federal
agency probe. The CBI team along with the CFSL and a medical board team from the AIIMS Forensic department visited the flat where Sushant was found dead on June 14. The forensic team also recreated the crime scene. The CBI team collected all the case records from the Mumbai Police and also questioned the doctors of the Cooper Hospital where his autopsy was carried on. The CBI also questioned several people in connection with the case. Meanwhile, the ED also registered a case of money laundering on July 31, a week before the CBI to probe the complaint of Singh alleging diversion of funds from the bank account of Sushant to others. The CBI and the ED then questioned Rhea, her father, brother and several others in connection with the case. Both the agencies are still silent on the latest developments. The NCB also registered a case related to drugs on August 26, a day
after the ED wrote a letter to the drug-law enforcement agency after it got the alleged chats discussing drugs. The NCB then exposed Bollywood stars as it summoned several of the A listers of the entertainment industry. The NCB questioned Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Shradhha Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh in connection with the drug-related case. The NCB also questioned Deepika’s former manager Karishma Prakash, fashion designer Simone Khambatta and several others in connection with the case. The NCB also arrested Rhea and her brother Showik in connection with the case. However, Rhea was granted bail after 28 days on October 7. Showik, who was also arrested on September 4, was granted bail on December 2 after staying in jail for almost three months. The NCB also arrested several players linked to the case including for-
mer Dharma Productions executive producer Kshitij Ravi Prasad in connection with the case. As the NCB widened its probe into the drugs case, it also arrested Arjun Rampal’s South African girlfriend Gabriella Demetriades’s brother Agisilaos Demetriades in a drug-related case on October 19. The NCB also questioned Rampal and his girlfriend in connection with the case in November and December, respectively. Meanwhile, the NCB also sought a reply from noted director and producer Karan Johar over the alleged party video where several Bollywood celebrities were seen. In his reply to NCB, Johar clarified that no drugs were used in the party at his residence in 2019. The NCB has sought Johar’s reply in connection with a complaint from Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Bollywood would definitely want to forget 2020 and start afresh in 2021.

Repeated failures of talks with farmers would escalate unrest in rural India: Sitaram Yechury New Delhi (IANS): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the opposition parties might be supporting the farmers but have no direct role in the agitation against new farm laws. “Over 200 farmer unions have come under the banner of Sanyukt Kisam Morcha (SKM) and have been opposing the pro-corporate farm laws for past several months. We are with the SKM but let me clarify, the entire agitation is being piloted by farmer leaders. It would be better if government breaks ice with them [SKM] instead of blaming the opposition for failure of the ongoing talks, “ Yechury told IANS while advocating the stand of all opposition parties. Expressing concern over the escalating showdown between the farmer unions and the Narendra Modi Government, the CPI(M) leader said almost all opposition leaders including him, want that this deadlock over farm laws should immediately end. “The repeated failures (of the talks) would escalate unrest in rural India. We are really worried about health of thousands of aged farmers who are sitting on a dharna on the borders of
Sitaram Yechury the Capital. Till now 40 farmers have died in the cold wave. So it’s important to end this deadlock. I request that the government should call all the stake holders, discuss the issues openly with them...and accept their demands,” Yechury said, adding, “or else convene the session of the Parliament, discuss the farm laws, scrap the objectionable parts and bring the new laws which support the farmers demands.”
Endorsing the call of Shiv Sena for a united front of opposition under Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar, the CPI(M) leader said that though he supports Sena’s gesture, the leader should be a consensus candidate. “Sharad Pawar is one of most able leaders in the present situation but once all parties come under one umbrella, the leader can be decided. Still, I would like to stress that current political situation of the country requires a strong and objective opposition,” added Yechury. On being asked whether a weak Congress, the principal opposition party against BJP, translates into a weak opposition, Yechury said that to a large extent it is the truth. “We all wish that a stronger Congress would mean a much stronger Opposition. But I cannot comment on the internal developments of the party,” he said. On leaving Mamata Banerjee alone and allying with Congress in poll-bound West Bengal, Sitaram Yechury opined that the primary objective was to prevent the BJP from forming a government in Bengal next year. “In fact, BJP desperately wants that Mamata should join us. But we realise that a massive anti-incumbency
wave against Mamata would dent our prospects. Therefore, we decided that all Left parties and the Congress would contest as a front, leaving Mamata on the other side. We feel that such a triangular fight would have more impact against the BJP.” Commenting on the differences between Janata Dal (United) and Bharatiya Janata Party over the recent developments in Arunachal Pradesh wherein several JDU MLAS switched to the BJP, the veteran Left leader said old allies Akali Dal and Shiv Sena were compelled to walk out from the NDA. “For me, Nitishji is one the most experienced politicians. I hope he understands what BJP or Jan Sangh have done to their socialist allies in the past. I have a lot of respect for him [Nitish Kumar]. In 2019 we wanted to project him as the Prime Minister candidate. In fact It was Nitish who had initiated the move to bring the entire opposition under one umbrella. But surprisingly he took a U-turn and joined Mr Modi. Anyway, we all still respect Nitish ji. Its for him to decide his next move. I can only ensure our doors are open for him,” the CPI(M) leader, known for cobbling alliances under one umbrella of opposition, said.

Arya Rajendran Thiruvananthapuram (IANS): Arya Rajendran, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) councillor from Mudavanmugal in Thiruvananthapuram, was sworn in as the new Mayor of the city corporation. She is just 21 years old. Arya, who is a B.Sc Mathematics second year student at the All Saints College here, told media that she will continue with her studies along with handling the responsibilities as the City Mayor. Thiruvananthapuram, commonly known by its former name Trivandrum, is the capital of the Indian state of Kerala. It is the most populous city in Kerala with a population of 957,730 as of 2011. Collector Navjot Khosa administered the oath of office to Rajendran inside a tightly-packed council hall after the latter was elected mayor with 54 votes out of 99 votes cast. The election of the 21-year-old was a foregone conclusion as the CPM-led LDF had 51 members in the 100-member council. The BJP, which had campaigned extensively this time in the hope of capturing power in the corporation, stood second with 34 members and the Congress-led UDF in third place with 10 members. Five members were Independents. Rajendran’s nomination to the mayor’s post, which is reserved for women this time, was a surprise choice by the CPI(M) last week and seen as the party’s strategy to thank younger voters who stood with them in this election. The party chose Rajendran as she’s been with the CPM since class five when she took membership in the Balasangham and her family have been supporters of the CPI(M) for many decades. Luck dawned on the 21-year-old also because two of the women mayoral candidates of the CPI(M) were defeated in the election.

Plea in Supreme Court to declare Guru Govind Singh birth anniversary as public holiday New Delhi (IANS): All India Shiromani Singh Sabha, a Sikh organization, has moved the Supreme Court seeking a uniform and non arbitrary implementation of policy for declaring a public holiday. The plea, filed through advocate Durga Dutt, sought promotion and development of Sikh religious and cultural ethos. The plea said the important birth anniversary of tenth Sikh Guru “Guru Gobind Singh, who is a religious icon
for the Sikh community, so far has not been declared a public holiday across the country, which has deeply aggrieved the Sikh organization. The petitioner contended that the birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh Guru should be allowed to be celebrated as ‘Prakash Parv’ throughout the country to instil a sense of patriotism, nationalism and brotherhood among the people. “The petitioner submits that
such a recognition by way of declaration of Gazette/public holiday would foster the spirit of unity, integrity and fraternity among the people of India and inspire the general populace to follow the High ideals of patriotism, nationalism and brotherhood among the people, said the plea, citing that Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world with 25.8 million believers. The petitioner said Guru Go-
vind Singh stood against injustice and his teachings transcend time and will remain relevant in all times to come. The petitioner also cited the casual response of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance and Pensions, on its representation, saying that at present there is no proposal for declaring Prakash Parv as a gazetted public holiday. The organisation has made the Centre as well as all state governments and Union Ter-
ritories as parties to the plea. The plea argued that holidays in countries like New Zealand, UK and USA, are governed by the legislation. However, in India there is no Public Holidays Act, except the Weekly Holidays Act, 1942, which provided for weekly holidays. The petitioner contended that in most cases holidays were declared by the executive at the behest of political groups, which is usually to appease a
particular section of the society. The plea submitted that due to lack of specific guidelines, codified laws there is no uniform policy, objective parameter to declare a public holiday in India. The plea sought a direction for declaring issuing guidelines for declaring public and gazetted holiday all over the country but not restricted to states and union territories where Sikhs are in significant numbers.
Stop maligning farmers fighting for justice, Punjab Chief Minister tells BJP Chandigarh (IANS): Slamming the BJP over the malicious and derogatory terms used by its senior leaders against protesting farmers, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday asked the party to stop maligning the farmers and their genuine fight for justice by calling them offensive names like Urban Naxals. “If the BJP cannot distinguish between anguished citizens fighting for their survival and terrorists, militants and hooligans, it should give up all pretense of being a people’s party, said the Chief Minister. A party which treats citizens exercising their democratic right of protest as Naxals and ter-
rorists has lost all right to rule over those citizens, he added. Hitting out at BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh over his petty description of farmers in Punjab as ‘Urban Naxals’, Amarinder Singh said with these remarks, the BJP leadership had hit a new low in its desperation to promote its political agenda. He pointed out that such protests by angry farmers were taking place not just in Punjab but also in BJP-ruled states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. “Do the farmers protesting in all these places look like Naxals to you? And does that mean law and order has collapsed everywhere?

The Chief Minister said the farmer leaders themselves believed, and were stressing, that it was imperative for the success of their movement to ensure that it remains peaceful. “Is that the language of Naxals, as Chugh is alleging? he asked, dubbing the BJP leader’s remarks as a shameless reflection of his own cheap and vicious mentality. In sharp contrast to the BJP, the Congress believed in upholding the people’s constitutional right of peaceful protest, which even the Supreme Court had validated in the context of the farmers’ agitation, the Chief Minister said. “But the BJP and its leaders like Chugh seem to be bent on stifling all such protests with their brazen lies and false propaganda, he added.

he asked Chugh. “What is being seen in all these states, as well as the Delhi borders, is the sorry fallout of the BJP-led Central government’s failed policy on agriculture, and its mishandling of the situation triggered by the farmers’ protest, said the Chief Minister. Instead of heeding the plea of the ‘annadatas’ and responding to their concerns, the BJP was busy trying to demean them and stifle their voice, he lamented. Pointing out that various farmer leaders had themselves appealed to agitating farmers not to disconnect power to mobile towers, the Chief Minister said this clearly showed that what was being witnessed on the ground in some places was a spontaneous manifestation of the wrath of farmers who see a dark future ahead as a result of the new farm laws. He pointed out that the farmer unions had clearly stated that they did not want farmers to indulge in such acts. In fact, the unions

146 more mobile towers hit in Punjab, Chief Minister issues stern warning nearing and students dependent on online education amid the COVID-19 pandemic, such communication breakdown could seriously affect their future, he said. The Chief Minister said his government had already distributed 175,000 lakh smartphones to Class 12 students to equip them for the board exams, but the vandalisation of telecom property was hampering the students. Professionals working from home, with many of them having come to the state during the pandemic, could lose their jobs due to such acts of violence and damage to property, he noted. Even banking services, which were also largely dependent on online transactions in these times of crisis, were taking a major hit due to these unlawful acts, he added. The farmers’ agitation had so far been successful and had garnered the support of people from all sections of society and across the country due to its peaceful nature, said the Chief Minister, warning that use of violence could alienate the protestors from the masses, which would be detrimental to the interests of
the farming community. While his government’s sympathies were with the agitating farmers, which were why it had also brought in state amendment bills in the

Chandigarh (IANS): Of the 1,561 mobile towers affected over the past few days owing to farmers’ agitations in Punjab against the contentious three central farm laws, 146 were impacted in Monday due to disruption of power supply to 32 towers that led to the disconnection of services of the remaining 114. So far, 433 towers have been repaired, a state government spokesperson said. The state has a total of 21,306 mobile towers spread across its 22 districts. (On Tuesday, denying any role in the damaging the telecom towers, farmer leaders, in their appeal from the Singhu border said the mobile tower and infrastructure of any company should not be damaged as their call was only on boycotting a company. Krantikari Kisan Union President Dharampal said their focus of struggle was only on boycotting and nothing else.) Issuing a stern warning, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the vandalisation of mobile towers and disruption of telecom services won’t be allowed and directed the police to take strict action against all those resorting to such unlawful activities. Making it clear that he will not tolerate destruction of any private or public property in Punjab, he said he was forced to toughen his stance as his repeated appeals to perpetrators of such acts had been ignored. The Chief Minister asserted that he will not let Punjab plunge into anarchy at any cost and nobody can be allowed to take law into their hands. Pointing out that his government had not objected to, or stopped peaceful protests in the state against the Centre’s “black” farm laws for the past several months, he said damage to property and inconvenience to the citizens could not, however, be endured. The Chief Minister’s warning came as the total number of mobile towers impacted in the state went up to 1,561, of which 25 had been physically damaged, allegedly by some farmers and their supporters in violation of the directions of the farmer unions to keep their protests against the farm laws peaceful. Calling upon farmers and their supporters to put an immediate stop to such destructive activities, which were being disowned by farmer leaders themselves, the Chief Minister said disruption of telecom services could lead to a communications blackout in the state, causing its people, especially students and working professionals, to suffer serious consequences. With examinations, especially board exams,

AAP to provide free Wi-Fi to protesting farmers Chandigarh (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday announced free Wi-Fi facility to farmers protesting against the Centre’s ‘black’ agriculture laws at Singhu border, Delhi. It said this would help them address the problem of Internet, so that they can respond to the antistruggle campaigners. The announcement was made virtually by AAP Punjab co-in charge and MLA Raghav Chadha. Chadha said the party was working as a ‘sevadar’ to provide facilities to the benefactors of the country during the agitation. He said it was decided by AAP’s National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to install Wi-Fi hotspots to help farmers make video calls and connect with family members back home. He said the party had taken this decision keeping in view the fact that farmers sitting hundreds of miles away from their homes were finding it difficult to communicate with their families. “A person needs bread, clothes and a house to live a respectable life. But now the Internet has also been added to it. We want the farmers to stay in touch with their families,” Chadha said. He said the party had identified a few places and the signal would be within 100 metres of the WiFi hotspot. Chadha said for the time being hotspot would start at the Singhu border and as per the demand of the farmers, it would be provided in other areas also.

It takes guts to have good health
WHY is it that some people eat to their heart’s content and never gain a pound, while others gain weight with a glance at the plate? As Bill Gates said, “Life is not fair. Get used to it. But fair or unfair, is there a complex, unseen system that plays a role in weight management for each of us? Your ability to maintain a healthy weight involves factors beyond diet and exercise. Some people’s metabolism, or operating system, is faster than others, requiring more energy to run. But there’s more than speed and efficiency. The gut microbiome contains microbial cells, including bacteria, that outnumber the cells in the body. Having evolved with us for millions of years, they all serve important functions, using us as hosts and interacting with our environment. The conditions of our environment and our interactions with the world affect the microbiome and thus our performance. It’s a mistake, therefore, to think about weight gain and obesity in simple terms. Similarly, it’s a mistake to equate poor mental health or neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s or depression solely with problems located in the brain. The gut and the brain are intricately connected. A growing body of research demonstrates that the gut microbiota is a significant environmental factor contributing to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This is the basis for recommendations in favour of diets rich in fruit and fibre. Apples and other fruit contain prebiotics, compounds that support the growth and function of healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. These prebiotics can change the speed and efficiency of your digestive engine, in turn affecting the performance of other systems and organs. These alterations in your gut microbiome are important because bacteria regulate how much fat you absorb, thereby affecting your weight and susceptibility to problems such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Changes in the environment, and thereby in the microbiome, may be an important part of the explanation for the obesity pandemic. Increased use of antimicrobial soaps and sanitizers are killing good and bad bacteria alike and we have become increasingly exposed to environmental pollutants. Furthermore, studies show that stress triggers changes in the circuits between the gut, the nervous system and key organs such as the brain, heart and lungs. When you are feeling stressed, your body is programmed to focus less on the work of digestion and more on fight-flight or freeze-hide response – the former involving high energy and the latter like a shut down. Chronic stress can result in sustained poor digestion. It should be no wonder that our systems get out of whack, leading some to gain weight more readily or to suffer other unhealthy consequences. This is why we’ve recommended in past articles that supplements like AppleSlim can help with weight management. There’s a growing body of research showing that apple polyphenols and other prebiotics can assist with the
functions of a “good gut. One study showed that apple polyphenols could help to improve the composition of our gut bacteria towards a ratio that reduces inflammation and the likelihood of obesity. This microbiome “renovation is believed to account for ability of apple polyphenols to reduce dangerous visceral fat and improve cardiovascular health markers. Bill Gates understands how to build an operating system. Had he done for medicine what he did for computers, he would have created integrated health systems with gastroenterologists, dieticians, and other nutrition specialists working with doctors who care for your nerves, heart, head, and all other parts.
