Ripudaman Singh Malik shot dead in Surrey

Surrey RCMP at 8200-block of 128 Street where Malik was shot dead. VANCOUVER businessman Ripudaman Singh Malik, 75, who had been acquitted in the 1985 Air India bombing case in 2005, was shot dead in Surrey on Thursday morning. Sources tell The VOICE that Malik may have been targeted because he reportedly wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his “deep heartfelt gratitude” for the unprecedented positive steps taken by his government for the Sikh community, as reported by the Hindustan Times newspaper of India on January 18. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) that was

called in by Surrey RCMP issued a statement just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, identifying the victim as Malik and asking the public to help further its investigation into the homicide. It said that at 9:26 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at 8236 128 Street. First responders attended the location and found the male victim had sustained fatal injuries. IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation and are working closely in partnership with Surrey RCMP, BC Coroner’s Service and the RCMP Forensic Identification Section.

We can confirm that the shooting appears to be targeted and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public,” said IHIT Sgt. Timothy Pierotti. “Having occurred in a residential area, we are confident that witnesses exist that could help us further this investigation. We urge them to come

MALIK’S son Jaspreet Singh Malik wrote on his Facebook Page: “My father, Ripudaman Singh Malik (19472022) dedicated his life to promoting Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings including those of love, honesty and Sarbat Da Bhalla (the betterment of all humanity). “He came to Canada in 1972, and in 1986 founded the Khalsa Credit Union and Khalsa School, which is now the largest private school in BC. “The media will always refer to him as someone charged with the Air India bombing. He was wrongly charged and the Court concluded there was no evidence against him. The media and RCMP never seemed to accept the Court’s decision and I pray today’s tragedy is not related. “My father’s commitment was to his community and his family, and his goal was to see the immigrant Sikh community thrive through education and financial security. His legacy lives on through Khalsa Credit Union and Khalsa School. “He is survived by his wife, 5 children, 4 daughters-in-law and 8 grandchildren.” KHALSA Schools of BC said in a post on their Facebook page: “Bhai Ripudaman Singh Malik, our school’s driving force since the very beginning in 1986, has left this world and gone back to Vaheguru. “All of us at Khalsa School are so very proud that we were able to work under Mr. Malik’s leadership and guidance without which Khalsa School would not be possible. “Mr. Malik’s legacy will carry forward always in Khalsa Schools of BC towards which they dedicated their

heart and soul to standing up as the institution it is today. “As Mr. Malik would say, these buildings will stand for another hundred years and will keep educating the community’s children for generations to come. With everyone’s support, Khalsa School will continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead.” ACCORDING to the Hindustan Times report of January 18, Malik wrote to Modi: “I am writing you this to express my deer heartfelt gratitude for the unprecedented positive steps taken by yourself to redress long-reading Sikh demands and grievances including elimination of blacklists that restricted visit to India of thousands of Sikhs living abroad, grant of passports and visas to asylees and their families, reopening of hundreds of 1984-riots closed cases leading to conviction and jail term for some, declaring 1984-riots as ‘genocide’ by then Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh on the floor of the House, giving compensation or Rs. 5.00 lakh [Rs. 500,000] per family of the anti-Sikh genocide victims, opening of Sri Kartarpur Saheb Corridor facilitating pilgrims from India to visit the revered place of our first Master Guru Nanak Dev Ji.” The newspaper also reported that Malik expressed happiness on the declaration of December 26 – the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s sons – as ‘Veer Baal Diwas’. “At the same time, Singh showed concerns at an “orchestrated campaign” by some misguided members of the Sikh community against the Modi government and India. This, he said, is being done at the behest of some foreign powers which are interested in destabilising India and challenge its national integrity,” the Hindustan Times wrote.

IHIT is asking that any witnesses or anyone traveling in the 8200 block of 128 Street, Surrey, as well as the area of 122 Street and 82 Avenue between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. with dash cameras or who has any information regarding the homicide of Malik to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Malik promised to work with the government of India for redressal of pending issues. The newspaper also reported that in a separate letter to the Sikh community, Malik “urged them to desist from the vicious and motivated campaign.”

“Violence in Punjab only ends up hurting the interests of the Sikh community in Punjab and throughout India and around the world. I do my daily Ardaas for world peace as I do not like seeing my community or any community suffer due to violence,” he said in the letter.

Mayor Doug McCallum’s Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project reaches a new milestone IT was a promise that Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum and his Surrey Safe Coalition ran on in the last municipal election and he stuck to it despite a barrage of slanderous and negative attacks on him by certain vested interests in the City. And on Thursday, the irst rapid transit project south of the Fraser River in 30 years reached a new milestone with the release of the business case and formal approval of provincial funding for the project. McCallum said: “The City of Surrey is moving full speed ahead on Surrey-Langley SkyTrain early works, having recently launched Phase 2 of roadworks along Fraser Highway to prepare for the extension. I am thrilled to see the business case has received formal approval and that the project will be completed two years earlier than planned. New rapid transit is long overdue in Surrey. At a time when the environment and global warming are at the forefront and gas prices continue to rise, the need to get people out of their vehicles and into transit has never been greater.” Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said: “With the release of the business plan and conirmation of provincial funding, we are now one step closer to bringing SkyTrain all the way to Langley. Our business plan conirms this major project will be completed two years earlier than expected, helping to transform the way people live, work and play south of the Fraser.” The business case estimate for the capital cost of Surrey Langley SkyTrain is $3.94 billion, including $2.4 billion for the Province’s share of the project and $1.3 billion from the federal government, with the remainder coming from local government. Work on the project is underway,

With the business case approved and funding in place, the procurement process for major construction will begin this summer. The project will provide highquality and low-cost transportation for tens of thousands of people throughout Surrey and Langley. The project includes eight new stations and three new bus exchanges, and, once completed, the travel time from Langley City Centre to King George SkyTrain Station in Surrey will be approximately 22 minutes. The business case estimate for the total cost of Surrey Langley SkyTrain is $4.01 billion, which includes capital costs and active transportation investments. The active transportation investments, such as biking or walking, advance the CleanBC goal of doubling the percentage of such trips by 2030. The project will provide sustainable transportation choices, as well as opportunities for new market and affordable housing, child care and health-care centres, and other public amenities in

Surrey and the Fraser Valley. A focus on transit-oriented development supports complete, connected and affordable communities in areas surrounding the new stations. To further these opportunities, the Province, TransLink, the City of Surrey, the City of Langley and the Township of Langley have agreed to collaborate on policies and initiatives to increase density and establish targets for transit-oriented development. This includes

commitments by local governments to explore and implement more eficient and effective approval processes for developments along the new corridor. The development of housing and amenities for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain will also be guided by recent changes to the Transportation Act (Bill 16) that were passed during the spring 2022

legislative session. Bill 16 enables the Province to acquire land to build housing and community amenities that are integrated into transit stations or exchanges. Supporting residential housing and employment growth along the Fraser Highway corridor will support transit ridership. Surrey Langley SkyTrain will be built under a community benefits agreement designed to provide opportunities for locals, Indigenous people, women and other underrepresented groups that are interested in starting or furthering careers in construction. The provincial contribution of $2.4 billion is based on the commitment to fund 40% of the total cost of the Mayors’ Council’s $6-billion 2022 Investment Plan. B.C.’s investment covers more than 60% of the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project. Transportation Investment Corporation (TI Corp) is leading the delivery of the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. TI Corp will provide the controls, practices and other oversight that are essential for this complex project.

McCallum gets motion passed to protect 220 acres of farmland from industrial development Safe Surrey Coalition takes concrete steps to protect food security and farming jobs

SAFE Surrey Coalition points out that it made a promise to voters in 2018 to pause development and to only proceed with “smart development.” “We are protecting fertile farmland from development by designating the lands in the Campbell Heights Official Community Plan as agricultural,” SSC said on Tuesday. “I have also directed the City of Surrey to work with the Province to move towards bringing these lands into the Agriculture Land Reserve and directed staff to conduct an assessment of all agricultural food producing land in Surrey with a view to protecting these lands for the purpose of addressing future food security requirements,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Protecting these 220 acres of farmlands from development is an important step towards climate change mitigation and to ensure that our future generations have a reliable source of locally grown produce for generations to come,” he added. We are taking concrete steps to protect our food security and farming jobs for future generations, SSC said. DURING Monday’s regular meeting, Surrey Council unanimously passed a motion from McCallum directing staff to assess all of the City’s agricultural land with preservation in mind for future food security purposes. McCallum’s motion also proposed that 220-acres of high-value farmland located at 192 Street and 36 Avenue be designated as agricultural as part of the Official Community Plan review to take place next year and to work with the federal and provincial governments to move towards bringing these lands into the Agricultural Land Reserve. “Protecting high-yield agricultural land is fundamental to ensuring future food security in the region and the province. In particular, the City hopes to see the 220 acres of exceptionally fertile land in South Surrey be preserved and added to the Agricultural Land Reserve,” said McCallum. “We will work with the federal government and the provincial government to let them know our intent and that we feel our citizens want to see this land protected.” McCallum’s approved motion states that the 220 acres of farmland located at 192 Street and 36 Avenue currently zoned Agricultural (A-1) is to be designated as agricultural as

Woman allegedly stabs man to death in Yaletown

VANCOUVER Police are investigating the city’s eighth homicide of 2022, after a man was stabbed in Yaletown Monday morning. A bystander called 9-1-1 around 8:30 a.m. on July 11 to report a man had been stabbed near Smithe and Homer streets. When VPD officers arrived moments later, they discovered a 29-year-old victim suffering grave injuries. The man was taken to hospital, but he died a short time later. A 34-year-old woman was arrested nearby and is currently in custody. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators is asked to call the Vancouver Police Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500.

Would-be victim was the alleged thief

VANCOUVER Police Deputy Chief Howard Chow tweeted on Wednesday: “Man calls police to report he was robbed by 3 suspects who had an axe and bear spray.” He added: “During our investigation, we quickly learned that our would-be victim stole these same items from someone else earlier.”

Surrey RCMP warn imitation weapons can pose a real risk

SURREY RCMP are reminding the public to be cognizant of carrying, possessing and using imitation firearms like BB guns, pellet guns and airsoft after some recent calls for service. Two recent files that came in to B Watch frontline officers demonstrate the potential dangers of imitation firearms. On June 23, at approximately 6 p.m., frontline officers were dispatched to a Priority 1 call following a report of a youth brandishing a handgun and threatening another youth inside a busy shopping mall. Officers responded after members of the public and security guards reported seeing the weapon. Police located the suspect and observed a silver revolver-type firearm that appeared to be loaded. Upon closer inspection the realistic looking firearm, cylinder and cartridges turned out to be an imitation firearm. Later that evening, a report came in of a road rage incident where a male had pulled down his car window and pointed a gun at another driver. Police immediately started patrols to attempt to locate the suspect. The suspect driver was located and a traffic stop was initiated by officers. A search of the vehicle located an imitation Glock BB gun within the vehicle. Both investigations remain ongoing, and charges have not

B.C.’s COVID-19 immunization plan: Boosters this fall

PEOPLE in B.C. can look ahead to their next COVID-19 vaccine dose with the Province announcing on Friday a fall booster program as the next step in its COVID-19 immunization plan. The Province says its COVID-19 vaccination strategy has helped keep people protected from the severe illness associated with getting this virus. With the fall and winter respiratory illness season approaching, the Province is offering a booster dose to protect people 12 years and older and provide them with sustained protection over these difficult months when respiratory infections increase. The Province first rolled out a booster program in October 2021. Since then, many British Columbians have received their booster dose, but approximately 1.3 million individuals still need to do so. Public health advises that everyone should get their first booster dose as soon as possible to strengthen and extend their protection. Since April 2022, a second booster dose

has been recommended and available to people living in long-term care facilities, people over 70, Indigenous people over 55, and those of all ages who are immunosuppressed, to ensure this group maintains a high level of protection against poor outcomes from COVID-19. The most recent recommendation from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is that people at increased risk of severe illness and those 65 years and older should receive a booster in the fall. For all other individuals between 12 and 64, NACI and the Province also encourage a fall booster. NACI also recommends that all fall booster shots should be done six months or more since the last one. Health Canada and NACI have started evaluating new versions of the COVID-19 vaccines that have been adapted to the Omicron variant. The Province expects these vaccines to be available to people in B.C. in the fall. Although the number of cases has recently gone down due to high levels of vaccina-

tions, COVID-19 is still circulating in all communities in B.C. Public health is keeping a close eye on how the virus behaves to continue to provide the best advice possible to protect British Columbians, B.C.’s healthcare system and communities. This is why a fall booster is recommended. Although people are advised to wait until the fall to receive their booster, those under 70 who got their last shot six months or more

ago and who feel they have unique or special circumstances, can make an appointment for a second booster through the call centre. Vaccinations for children aged six months to four years are subject to Health Canada approval and are anticipated to be coming soon. Parents are strongly encouraged to register their child now online: www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca Similar to the vaccine for children five to 11, the vaccine program for children aged six months to four years will draw on a separate supply of vaccine designed for small children and will be delivered in clinics appropriate for that age group. People who have not had their first booster are not protected enough from severe illness related to COVID-19 and are not up to date with their protection. Those who have had COVID-19 still need a booster to ensure they are protected. COVID-19 vaccinations are available in participating pharmacies and health authority clinics throughout the province. People can make appointments through Get Vaccinated BC. Quick Facts: * As of July 6, 2022, 2,760,192 third doses have been administered in B.C. This is 59.5% of the 12+ population. * All recommended booster doses are mRNA vaccines. Those who received AstraZeneca for the first or second dose are recommended to receive Moderna or Pfizer for the booster. * Vaccine effectiveness data from early April through early May 2022, when Omicron variant activity was very high in Canada, shows that people vaccinated with a complete primary series plus one booster dose, had a risk of being hospitalized approximately five times lower compared to unvaccinated people.

BC RCMP notifies IIO BC following serious injuries to two motorcyclists in Surrey

THE BC RCMP said on Monday that they had notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Surrey where two motorcyclists suffered serious injuries. On Saturday, July 9, at approximately 1 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a complaint of three men who had been consuming alcohol at a local business and were preparing to leave on motorcycles. An officer responded and located two motorcycles believed to be related to the complaint travelling north on 188 Street. He performed a U-turn and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The motorcycles did not stop and the officer discontinued attempts to conduct the traffic stop. Shortly after, a different officer came upon a scene of a collision involving what is believed to be the two motorcycles with the operators on the ground. Emergency Health Services were contacted and the two men were transported to hospital with serious injuries. According to the IIO BC, the collision occurred in the 6400-block of Fraser Highway. The IIO BC is now investigating the incident in an effort to determine whether police actions contributed to their injuries. For more information about the IIO BC, visit its website at www.iiobc.ca. The IIO is requesting any person with relevant information of the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

months to four years, regional health authorities will start offering this vaccine at clinics throughout the province on August 2. “B.C. has the capacity and experience to deliver this COVID-19 vaccination campaign for this new age group,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, on Thursday. “Since the start of the vaccination campaign in B.C., almost 12 million doses have been administered to eligible people. I encourage parents to register their kids under the age of five, so they are invited to book an appointment, starting on August 2.” The COVID-19 vaccine for the six-month to four-year-olds will be available in all communities through health authority child-friendly clinics. Parents or guardians seeking vaccinations for their eligible children under the age of five can register them in the provincial Get Vaccinated system now. Once registration is complete, parents or guardians will be invited to book a vaccination at a clinic in their community when the immunization program starts in August. For children who are not yet six months of age, parents or guardians should still register their child and can expect an invitation once the child reaches six months of age. “We know that these vaccines are safe and have helped the province weather the COVID-19 pandemic so far,” said Dr. Martin Lavoie, acting provincial health officer. “Although most children who are infected with this virus have no symptoms or mild symptoms, unfortunately we know that some can get very sick and these vaccines are key to keeping our communities healthy and safe.” For children who have already had COVID-19, NACI recommends waiting eight weeks after the start of COVID-19 symptoms or a positive COVID-19 test, before beginning or continuing the primary series. This interval may be shortened to four weeks for children who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. “We encourage parents to register their children under five now to get vaccinated so they can get the vaccine as soon as possible when we begin the vaccine rollout on Tuesday, Aug. 2,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead of B.C.’s COVID-19 immunization plan. Health Canada, NACI and B.C.’s provincial health officer will continue to monitor the situation for this age group and will update guidance as needed. Currently, government is expecting these doses to be administered starting August 2, following the long weekend. Quick Facts * Approximately 208,000 infants and children six months to four years of age are now eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. * The Moderna vaccine for infants and children from six months to four years old is a two-dose series, given eight weeks apart. * This Moderna vaccine is a smaller dose of the Moderna vaccine used for children, and it will be available for infants and children under the age of five. * Younger children need a smaller dose of the vaccine to get the same protection from COVID-19. * Register children through the Get Vaccinated system. * Invitations to book an appointment will be sent in August.

Celebrating community organizations

the sectors of arts and culture, sports, public safety, environment, and human and social services. This week, I was pleased to announce funding for local organizations in the RichmondQueensborough community through the Community Gaming Grant program. Across the province, we are providing over $61 million in grants to local organizations in the health and social services sector, which includes mental health supports, services for people with disabilities, women in need, immigrant and refugee supports, and more. In Richmond-Queensborough, Khalsa Diwan Society - New Westminster is one of these grant recipients. This organization has provided spiritual and social communion through challenging times, and I look forward to attending more of their community

BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond-Queensborough ACROSS Richmond-Queensborough, local organizations provide services that make life better for people. From mental health and addictions support to providing points of connection within the community, we know that these services and programs make our communities stronger. Behind each organization, there are people who give their time, skills and knowledge to the community and people within them. I am grateful for the work of these people, and their commitment to making our community a better place for everyone. Every year, the Community Gaming Grants program distributes $140 million to non-profits throughout B.C. These organizations span

events. Other organizations receiving this funding provide space for community members to connect and access services, such as East Richmond Community Association and Hamilton Community Association. Additionally, Touchstone Family Association, another grant recipient, offers supports and services to families and children. One of the things that makes RichmondQueensborough such an incredible community to serve is the ways in which we step up to care for one another. We all are someone or know someone who has benefitted from the services local nonprofit organizations provide. Please join me in expressing appreciation for these organizations, and the workers and volunteers that serve our community.

Projects for market housing, rental units, seniors housing, and housing for homeless in Surrey Permit wait times have been reduced from nearly 15 weeks to 8.4 weeks last year. Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum said on Wednesday: “I am thrilled to see the amount and variety of housing projects moving forward in Surrey.” He noted: “These projects will help alleviate some of the pressing needs in our community surrounding affordable, accessible housing. As one of the fastest growing cities in the country, Council recognizes that access to a range of housing options is crucial.

Falcon’s broken promise delayed Surrey Skytrain extension by eight years: NDP

EVEN as Transportation Minister Rob Fleming announced on Thursday that the SurreyLangley Skytrain extension will be finished two years ahead of schedule, the NDP pointed out that as Transportation Minister in 2008, B.C. Liberal leader Kevin Falcon promised to extend Expo Line service in Surrey by 2020. But he didn’t secure the federal and municipal funding to get the job done. As Finance Minister four years later, Falcon refused to fund the project in his budget, the NDP said.

The project now underway is scheduled for completion in 2028, two years earlier than first estimated under the NDP – but eight years later than it would have opened if Falcon kept his promise, the NDP noted. NDP MLA Jagrup Brar said: “Kevin Falcon told people in Surrey he’d get the Skytrain expansion built for them, but he chose to cut taxes for the richest 1% instead. His broken promise has kept people stuck in traffic another eight years. We’re getting it done so we can save people money and help them get home to their families faster.”

“To help expedite project completions, the City has worked hard to reduce permit wait times through the introduction of a Guaranteed Permitting Timeline Program introduced last fall. “Since then, we have exceeded our targets, reducing permit wait times from nearly 15 weeks to 8.4 weeks.” The developments that Council moved for-

ward include four high-rise projects ranging from 36-storeys to 43-storeys, several mid-rise buildings, a hotel being converted into housing for those who struggle with homelessness and a seven-storey seniors independent living building. Council also gave final approvals for Surrey’s forthcoming second hospital in Cloverdale.

Pre-campaign period for municipal elections begins Monday

THE pre-campaign period for the 2022 General Local Elections begins Monday, July 18 and runs until September 16, Elections BC announced on Thursday. Election advertising rules come into effect with the start of the pre-campaign period. Election advertising rules are also in effect during the campaign period, which runs from September 17 until General Voting Day on October 15. Elections BC administers campaign financing and advertising rules in local elections, but does not administer voting, candidate

nominations, or other aspects of the process. Elector organizations, prospective candidates and third parties that sponsor elec-

tion advertising during the pre-campaign or campaign period must include their name and contact information on all of their ads, in addition to other requirements. Third party election advertisers must register with Elections BC. The list of currently registered third party sponsors is available on the Elections BC website. This list is updated daily. The Local Elections Campaign Financing Act defines what is election advertising. During the pre-campaign period, election advertising is any public communication

that promotes or opposes, directly or indirectly, the election of a candidate or an elector organization endorsing a candidate. During the campaign period, the definition of election advertising also includes communications that take a position on an issue associated with a candidate or elector organization. For more information on the campaign financing and advertising rules in the 2022 General Local Elections, visit https://elections.bc.ca/localelections.

units of affordable housing and make life more affordable for British Columbians. Five years later, life is more expensive than ever, housing prices have skyrocketed, and David Eby has managed to build just six per cent of his housing goal,” said BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon. “It’s clear that quietly firing BC Housing board members, that the NDP appointed, on a Friday night was David Eby’s attempt to avoid bringing attention to his latest disaster. His failure in leadership has resulted in the single worst decline in housing affordability in a generation. British Columbians must now pay the price for the latest example of NDP incompetence.” A recently published Ernst & Young report found that while working on Eby and the NDP’s housing programs, BC Housing did not establish program outcomes, they failed to properly account for rising construction costs in its finances putting future projects at risk, and they also failed to establish the resources, skills and jurisdictional knowledge required to successfully deliver programs. The report also found contracts were awarded without identifiable criteria, developers lost confidence and withdrew from the HousingHub loan program, and BC Housing’s reputation within the sector was damaged because it couldn’t effectively oversee its $2 billion funding expansion. In short, the organization and its board failed to provide the most basic management oversight and competence. Meanwhile, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) states that B.C. will need to build 570,000 additional homes by

2030 to deliver any sort of affordability to the housing market — far more than the NDP’s promise of 114,000 housing units, of which only 7,219 have been opened since 2017. Meanwhile, a National Bank report says it now takes 38 years to save for a down payment on a home in Vancouver under the NDP. “Mass firings of NDP appointees can’t excuse David Eby’s failure on the housing crisis. With 75 per cent of people in our province having given up hope of ever owning a home in B.C., it’s clear that a half-decade of NDP rhetoric with no follow-through has left British Columbians worse off than ever,” said MLA Mike Bernier, BC Liberal Housing Critic. “Whether it’s co-authoring disgraced studies that blame Asian homebuyers for the housing crisis or trying to find ways to somehow blame Kevin Falcon for decisions made while he was out of government, David Eby has consistently found ways to politicize the housing crisis while failing to take any responsibility for fixing it as Housing Minister. It’s obvious that the lack of affordable housing is something David Eby would rather use for grandstanding, political theatre, and divisive rhetoric instead of actually working to fix.” The BC Liberals said that claims in the 2015 study co-authored by Eby blaming Chinese money for the housing crisis were thoroughly repudiated last month by Associate Chief Justice Austin Cullen of the B.C. Supreme Court. Despite being pressed by Global News and Falcon, Eby has yet to apologize to the Asian community.

FRASER Health’s Urgent Care Response Centre (UCRC) is the recipient of the 2022 Award of Excellence in Mental Health and Addictions Quality Improvement. Each year, the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) awards this honour to a hospital, health authority, community-based mental health and addictions program/service, or leader in the field that demonstrates evidenceinformed and sustained quality improvements in the area of mental health and addictions. Fraser Health is the first health authority in British Columbia to receive the award. The UCRC staff and clinicians have been recognized for their creativity in delivering health care to meet the increasing demands of clients requiring access to mental health and substance use services; supporting those requiring service by providing accessible, timely and effective service; providing a central point of access for adults in Surrey who require support, as well as urgent care, but do not require hospitalization; and decreasing emergency department visits, acute admissions and acute bed days. Dr. Victoria Lee, President and CEO of Fraser Health, visited clinicians and staff at the Surrey UCRC to congratulate them and present the award to Dr. Marietta Van Den Berg, lead psychiatrist for the UCRC. “It feels like recognition that we are on the right track,” said Dr. Van Den Berg. She attributes the UCRC’s success to their “willingness to deliberately choosing change, and constantly seeking better ways to serve and produce better outcomes.”

Nathan Cullen will not seek BC NDP leadership

NATHAN Cullen, MLA for Stikine and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Immigration for B.C., on Tuesday announced on Twitter that he “will not be entering the leadership race to become the next leader of the BC NDP and Premier of British Columbia.” Cullen thanked “all who reached out with advice, encouragement and caring,” adding, “your support & insights I value more than you can know.” In his letter announcing his decision, he said he had spent the past week reflecting and had decided that this is not the time to run for leader of the NDP. “My kids are still young and I want to focus my attention on the needs of my family and serving the people of Stikine as MLA,” he said. Cullen said: “Less than two weeks ago today, Premier John Horgan announced he would be stepping down as leader. I had hoped that he would take us through to the next election and had made no plans to run if he decided not to. I am sorry to see him leave his position and the steady leadership he has brought to our province, yet happy for the time he and Ellie will now have together. “After John announced he would be stepping down, many people I trust and admire asked me to consider throwing my hat into the ring. I felt I needed to honour these requests with the time and effort they deserve.” Last week, Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation and MLA for Delta North, had announced that he would not be seeking the BC NDP leadership and had instead endorsed David Eby, Attorney General, for the position.

CRTC asks Rogers to provide comprehensive explanation regarding national service outage

IAN Scott, Chairperson and CEO of the CRTC, said in a statement on Tuesday that the CRTC has asked Rogers Communications Canada Inc. (Rogers) to respond to detailed questions and provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the national service outage millions of Canadians experienced on Friday, July 8. This widespread network outage not only disrupted Canadians and Canadian businesses across the country, it prevented access to services such as 9-1-1 and emergency/public

alerting, as well as other critical infrastructure services, Scott noted. The CRTC is requesting a detailed account from Rogers as to “why” and “how” this happened, as well as what measures Rogers is putting in place to prevent future outages. Scott added: “We take the safety, security, and wellness of Canadians very seriously and we are responsible for ensuring that Canadians have access at all times to a reliable

and efficient communications system. “This is the first step the CRTC is taking to improve network resiliency for all Canadians in response to this significant outage. Events of this magnitude paralysing portions of our country’s economy and jeopardizing the safety of Canadians are simply unacceptable.” Scott said: “We acknowledge the actions taken by [Innovation, Science and Industry] Minister [François-Philippe] Champagne yesterday to direct the major telecommunications

companies to reach agreements on (i) emergency roaming, (ii) mutual assistance during outages, and (iii) a communication protocol to better inform the public and authorities during telecommunications emergencies.” He added: “Once we are satisfied with Rogers’ response to our questions, we will determine what additional measures need to be taken.” Rogers has until July 22 to provide its responses.

Adults using personal dating services being blackmailed for money

BURNABY RCMP are warning the public about the dangers of sharing personal information online, following a number of recent extortion reports. In the last month, officers have investigated at least nine reports involving adults sharing personal information such as phone numbers and home addresses through personal dating services who were then blackmailed for money. Three of these reports involved the fraudsters sending videos that appear to show them driving to the victim’s

The fraudsters follow up by sending the victims graphic photographs of dead bodies while continuing to demand money. “We have seen romance scams before, but this one is unique due to the graphic and alarming videos and pictures that are sent to the victims as a scare tactic,” said Cpl. Alexa Hodgins. “We want the pub-

lic to be aware of this scam method to prevent victims from sending money out of fear.” Police say more people than ever are going online to find friendship and relationships. Fraser Health welcomes back 474 housekeeping services workers

PEOPLE accessing health care in the Lower Mainland benefit from more stable, consistent and supportive patient care as 474 housekeeping services workers return as Fraser Health employees. This change comes after almost 20 years of these workers having their services contracted out to private companies. “Bringing health-service workers back into the public system means better working conditions for them, better care for patients and a stronger health-care system for all of us,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, on Thursday. “I am proud of Fraser Health for the incredible repatriation efforts they’ve made thus far.” Health authorities and Providence Health Care continue to repatriate workers under Bill 47, bringing an estimated 4,000 workers back into the public system. In July 2022, a further 474 housekeeping services workers will be repatriated to 18 Fraser Health sites: * Delta Hospital * Mountain View Manor * Irene Thomas Hospice * Langley Memorial Hospital * Rosewood * Marwood * Cedar Hill * Maple Hill * Ridge Meadows Hospital * Baillie House * Surrey Memorial Hospital * CareLife Fleetwood * Czorny Alzheimer Centre * Fellburn Care Centre * Queen’s Park Care Centre * Peace Arch Hospital * Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion * Peace Arch Hospital Foundation Lodge “Bill 47 is helping bring more housekeeping services workers in-house and providing them with security and safety,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care. “Our goal is to create a stronger B.C. for everyone, and that means ensuring our health-care system and health-care service workers, who provide vital care for people every day, are supported.” To address inequality and enhance working conditions for employees in health-care facilities, government is ensuring that workers have the benefits, wages and working con-

tive agreement protections – for their own positions. I am so gratified to see that terrible injustice now be corrected.” Dr. Victoria Lee, President and CEO, Fraser Health, added: “Our housekeeping workers are essential to providing the highest quality of care to our patients, clients and residents, and I am very pleased to welcome hundreds more back to the Fraser Health family this summer. Their work has made our health system stronger, and I know they will continue to have a positive impact in our region as Fraser Health employees for years to come.”

Meena Brisard, Secretary-Business Manager, Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU), pointed out: “Hospital housekeepers are critical to patient care and safety. Reuniting them with the health-care team recognizes their essential work and improves their lives by providing better wages and benefits, which leads to less turnover and an improved public healthcare system for all of us. What we’ve learned from these past 20 years of privatization is that contracting out disproportionately impacts women and racialized health-care workers. We can do better, and today we are.”

Evidence has shown that employees who feel secure and safe in their jobs provide higher-quality care for people, and in turn, employers can attract and retain staff at a higher and more consistent level. Following the initial announcement on August 30, 2021, health authorities and Providence Health Care served notice under the terms of 21 commercial service contracts and began a phased approach to repatriate housekeeping and food service contracts, beginning with Island Health. Work to bring health-care service workers back into the public system began in 2019, when the Province brought Bill 47 (Health Sector Statutes Repeal Act) into force. Bill 47 repealed the Health and Social Services Delivery Improvement Act (Bill 29) and the Health Sector Partnerships Agreement Act (Bill 94), which had facilitated contracting out in the health sector and caused significant labour impacts. In 2020, the process was started with the North Island Hospitals, which spearheaded the move independently of Bill 47 to bring 150 contracted-out workers in-house at the Campbell River and Comox Valley hospitals. Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, said: “All workers deserve stable employment that treats them with dignity and respect. Years ago, dedicated people who worked hard to provide quality services to support their families unfairly lost their jobs. They had to reapply – at lower wages and without previously negotiated seniority and other collec-

London: Rishi Sunak won the second ballot in the Conservative leadership race with 101 votes. Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt got 83 votes, while Foreign Secretary Liz Truss placed third again with 64. Attorney General Suella Braverman, who is of Indian origin, was knocked out of the contest. She announced she is offering her backing to Truss. Kemi Badenoch, the former equalities minister, and Tom Tugendhat, chair of the foreign affairs committee, remain in contention. Lord Frost, the former chief Brexit negotiator, earlier came out to say he had "grave reservations" about Mordaunt becoming the next Prime Minister. Polling suggests she would win a head-to-head

contest against any of the other candidates if she made the final two. Sunak won the first round of balloting with 88 votes. Mordaunt came second with 67 votes. Third was Truss, securing 50 votes.

Braverman scraped through with 32 votes. A total of 358 MPs were eligible to vote. Nadhim Zahawi, who briefly succeeded Sunak as Chancellor before Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced to resign, and

Jeremy Hunt, who was Health Secretary and Foreign Secretary in previous governments, were eliminated as they didn’t cross the threshold of 30 votes to remain in the race. The field is expected to be narrowed to two by the end of next week, according to the BBC. Then around 160,000 Tory members will decide which candidate will be the next party leader and prime minister. The result will be announced on September 5. Meanwhile, Sunak tweeted a chart – “Only Rishi can beat Starmer” -- showing how each Tory leadership hopeful would fare against Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer in an election. He is the only one who would defeat Starmer.

petitions before the court saying that Daler Mehndi was not required in the case as he had nothing to do with the immigration fraud, called 'kabootarbaazi' -- literally flying of pigeons but referring to numerous youth in Punjab trying to use illegal means to settle abroad. The singer was arrested by the

police in October 2003 along with his brother after the complainant said he was duped of a huge sum of money by the two, who had promised to take him abroad as part of their musical group and to leave him in some western country to settle there. Police officials, after investigations, had stated that the singers and other performers had got into a well-organised racket to illegally take youth out of Punjab to western countries by making them part of musical troupes. The youth were charged up to Rs 2 million in each case. But after police started the proceedings that Daler Mehndi had nothing to do with the immigration fraud case, the complainant moved court again objecting to the singer being discharged. He said that both the brothers had duped him.

Daler Mehndi sent to jail in 2003 human trafficking case

Chandigarh (IANS): A court in Punjab's Patiala on Thursday dismissed the plea of leading bhangra-pop singer Daler Mehndi against his two-year jail sentence in a 19-year-old human trafficking case. He was subsequently arrested and sent to a local jail. He was convicted along with his brother in March 2018 and later released on bail. As his bail plea was dismissed by the court of Additional Sessions Judge H.S. Grewal, Daler Mehndi was taken into custody. Police had registered a case against the singer, his brother Shamsher Singh -- who died in October 2017 -- and two others, after it was alleged that the accused took money from people to the tune of Rs 1 crore [Rs 10 million] on the pretext of taking them abroad.

Complainant Bakhshish Singh alleged that the deal never matured and the accused failed to return the money. The case was registered in 2003 in Patiala. Daler Mehndi was subsequently arrested but released on bail after a few days. Police had earlier moved two

First I2U2 projects to promote agriculture, food, green energy in India

New York (IANS): The first projects of the I2U2 will be located in India and help with agriculture, food and green energy, according to the joint statement of the four leaders after the group’s launch. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan along with the US President Joe Biden launched the Middle East Quad known as “I2U2” from the initials of the participants. The UAE will invest $2 billion in the agriculture and food project that aims to “maximise crop yields and, in turn, help tackle food insecurity in South Asia and the Middle East,” the statement said on Thursday. Biden claimed that the project that will utilise US and Israeli expertise “has the potential to sustainably increase India’s food yield in the region threefold in just five years”. Gujarat will be the beneficiary of the 300 megawatt wind and solar energy programme and projects like that “have the potential to make India a global hub for alternate supply chains in the renewable energy sector,” the statement added. Speaking through a videolink from India, Modi said, “The I2U2 has established a positive agenda from

its very first summit on Thursday.” “We have identified joint projects in several areas and have also made a roadmap to take them forward,” he added. The I2U2 will work in six areas -water, energy, transport, space, health and food security -- combining the expertise and the resources of the four nations, Modi said. With political and strategic divergences among the four countries, the emphasis was on economic and technical cooperation. Unlike in the Indo-Pacific region, where the other Quad of India -- the US, Japan and Australia --

face direct aggressive conduct by China, in the Middle East the challenge for I2U2 is from China’s Belt and Road initiative to extend its power more subtly through predatory lending and trade practices. The US President, who was present in person with Lapid in Jerusalem for the launch, said, “The first two projects that we’re tackling together on food security and clean energy are designed to take on two of the most urgent crises affecting people around the globe: food insecurity.” “Our nations represent some of the most innovative, technologi-

cally capable, and entrepreneurial people on the planet,” he added. The mobilisation of the strength of the I2U2 nations can be seen in the two projects in India. UAE will invest $2 billion in the agriculture and food project, and the US and Israeli private sectors will lend their expertise while India will provide the land facilitating farmers’ integration into food parks, the joint statement said. The project will “develop a series of integrated food parks across India that will incorporate state-ofthe-art climate-smart technologies to reduce food waste and spoilage, conserve fresh water and employ renewable energy sources,” it added. For the $330 million Gujarat wind solar electricity project that is to be complemented by a battery energy storage system, UAE-based companies are exploring opportunities to serve as “critical knowledge and investment partners,” the statement said. The US Trade and Development Agency has funded a feasibility study for it and the US and Israel are to work with the UAE and India to highlight private sector opportunities, it added. “Indian companies are keen to participate in this project and contribute to India’s goal of achieving 500

GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030,” it said. UAE President said that he wanted to “emphasise the importance of giving priority during the coming time to research and development, healthcare and space”. Among the future projects mentioned is providing vaccines -something that has been a focus area for the other Quad in the IndoPacific. While putting the spotlight on food and energy security, the joint statement laid out an ambitious agenda ranging from infrastructure for better physical connectivity in the region to financing start-ups, with waste treatment in between. The I2U2 statement detailed them: “We intend to mobilise private sector capital and expertise to modernise infrastructure, advance low carbon development pathways for our industries, improve public health and access to vaccines, advance physical connectivity between countries in the Middle East region, jointly create new solutions for waste treatment, explore joint financing opportunities, connect our startups to I2U2 investments, and promote the development of critical emerging and green technologies, all while ensuring near- and long-term food and energy security.”

Made-in-India’ surgical robotic system set up at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute

New Delhi (IANS): The Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre in Delhi on Thursday installed the first-ever ‘Madein-India’ surgical robotic system. After two pilot projects wherein Sudhir Rawal, Medical Director, RGCI, and his team successfully performed 26 surgeries with the surgical robotic SSI Mantra, the robot is now ready to provide an advanced method of surgery, which will be accessible to the general public at a much lower

cost, said the hospital. “I have used the SSI Mantra System on many of my patients. In its present form, the performance is quite good, and I could use the system for complex operations. Many more patients in India and around the world will benefit from this technology based on quality and cost-effectiveness,” said Rawal. The surgical robot is modular, flexible and versatile in comparison to leading global surgical

GOTABAYA Rajapaksa has resigned as president of Sri Lanka after fleeing to Singapore in the face of mass protests at home over his rule. He is believed to have wanted to leave Sri Lanka before stepping down in order to avoid the possibility of arrest under a new administration. The cost of food, fuel and other basic supplies has soared for Sri Lankans. In the capital Colombo, delighted demonstrators greeted news of the president’s departure with dancing. “We are beyond happy but also beyond relieved so we can take a break and go back to our lives,” Viraga Perera told the media.

Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa finally resigns

Gotabaya Rajapaksa “At this stage we are so exhausted because of all the flip-flopping, that we consider this moment substantial enough as a victory.” Rajapaksa arrived in Singapore

earlier on Thursday after first flying to the Maldives on Tuesday night. Reports say he is accompanied by his wife and two bodyguards. Singapore’s foreign ministry said Rajapaksa had not asked for asylum or been granted asylum. “Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum,” it added. The acting president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, does not formally become interim president until he is sworn in. After that, Wickremesinghe - who was appointed acting president by President Rajapaksa after the latter fled - has 30 days for parliament to endorse him. If they do not, MPs need to hold a vote for a new president.

The resignation letter was sent by email to the speaker of parliament, who said he would complete legal processes and announce it officially on Friday. It has left some confused as to where they stand. “Earlier they fooled us [in saying] that he would go. It’s the same thing happening now, they have received the resignation letter but the speaker says they have to legalise it. I don’t know what there is to legalise. So it’s really crazy,” said Suzette Fernando, who was among the crowds celebrating. However, the crowds appeared smaller than before: Wickremesinghe on Thursday imposed a curfew for a second day to quell

protests. The streets of Colombo were calmer as anti-government demonstrators began leaving some of the official buildings they had occupied. “We are peacefully withdrawing from the presidential palace, the presidential secretariat and the prime minister’s office with immediate effect, but will continue our struggle,” said a spokeswoman for the protesters. One person died and 84 others were injured during Wednesday’s protests, which took place at key landmarks around the capital, Colombo, including the prime minister’s office.

BJP plans grand victory celebration for Draupadi Murm

New Delhi (IANS): With eyes on tribal votes in the 2024 general elections, the BJP is planning a grand celebration for Draupadi Murmu if she wins the upcoming July 18 Presidential election. As the victory of Murmu is certain, the BJP has started preparation to celebrate her victory on “becoming the first tribal woman president of the country”. Sources said that preparation has started and direction has been issued in this regard for the grand celebration as there is no doubt on Murmu’s victory. “Everyone in the party and country are confident about Murmu’s victory, and after that she becomes the first tribal woman President. Celebrations will be organised across the country especially in tribal-dominated villages and areas,” sources said. It is learnt that as per plan, victory will be celebrated in over 100,000 tribal villages in the country. “Victory celebrations will start after the official announcement of the Presidential poll result on July 21. Celebration will be held at mandal (block) level in tribal areas and only posters of Murmu will be used,” party sources said. The party is also planning small rallies in tribal areas after the presidential election, to cover all villages and gram panchayats

sections of society, now the BJP leadership has decided to make inroads among the tribal communities across the country. Now get vehicle registration certificate via dealers in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): In a leap forward for ensuring registration of new vehicles in a smooth manner, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday launched a new citizen-centric service of eregistration certificates (eRCs) through automobile dealers. “This is a historic initiative that will enable the common man to get the

Chandigarh (IANS): Following specific intelligence inputs regarding the smuggling of heroin from the UAE to Punjab, the Punjab Police in a joint operation with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and central agencies recovered 75 kg heroin from a container at the Mundra Port in Gujarat, Punjab Director-General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Tuesday. The contraband was concealed in a container of unstitched clothes using a cardboard pipe which was further

delivery of the smart registration certificate at their doorstep,” he said, while launching this service. Mann said this facility will provide a huge reprieve to the people desirous of buying new vehicles. Ever since assuming the charge of office, the government has taken several pro-people decisions to benefit all Amarinder Singh

strata of society, he said. Mann said by empowering private dealers selling new vehicles to issue registration certificate, the state government aims at giving big relief to people as they will not have to stand in long queues for hours to get their new vehicles registered at the offices of Regional Transport Authorities and Sub Divisional Magistrates.

The Chief Minister said apart from facilitating the common man by saving their time, money and energy, this step will also help in providing clean, transparent, effective and corruption-free administration to people. He said the private dealers will provide this facility for new vehicle owners by logging through their Aadhaar numbers.

After Punjab Police tip-off, ATS Gujarat seizes 75 kg heroin camouflaged by an oversized plastic pipe. The container, which was loaded from the Jebel Ali port in the UAE, was booked by an importer from Malerkotla in Punjab. The DGP said that as the link of the container has been established with Punjab, the consignment seems to be routed to some other place via Punjab. “The Punjab part is being explored and investigated,” he added. The recovery comes as a ma-

jor success amid the ongoing war against drugs launched on the direction of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The DGP said following inputs, Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) of S.A.S. Nagar had sent teams to Gujarat who were deputed at the Mundra Port. “In coordination with the central agencies and ATS Gujarat, searches were conducted at the Mundra Port with the help of Customs,” he said, adding that after following due procedure and documentation,

the container was opened, leading to the recovery of a big haul of 75 kg heroin. Following the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act guidelines, the consignment was opened in the presence of Customs officials and the local magistrate. To ascertain backward and forward linkages, some suspected persons from Malerkotla and Ludhiana found to be linked with this import of consignment have been called for questioning by the district police.

Punjab sets up disability cell for physically challenged Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday ordered the formation of a dedicated disability cell for the welfare of persons with the disabilities. An official statement quoting the

Chief Minister said the formation of the dedicated cell was a long-pending demand. He said the persons with disability had to face a lot of difficulties for availing the benefits of the sev-

eral government schemes and programmes meant for their well-being. Mann said most of the time they had to run from pillar to post for getting their work done. The Chief Minister said this dedi-

cated cell will be a single-window platform for the persons with disabilities to avail the benefits of these schemes. Likewise, he said the persons with disability can lodge their complaints

and give their suggestions to make the functioning of this cell more efficient. Mann said this initiative will enable this section of society to live their lives with dignity and pride.

676 drug smugglers arrested in a week: Punjab Police Chandigarh (IANS): Intensifying its war against the drug menace in the state, Punjab Police on Monday said it has arrested 676 drug smugglers and suppliers after registering 559 First Information Reports under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 in the past one week.

A police spokesperson said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has given Punjab Police a free hand to wage a war against drugs and extensive drives are being launched to combat the menace. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav has ordered all Commissioners of Police to

strictly adhere to the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs and keep vigil at “drug hotspots”. The spokesperson said the police have recovered 5.57 kg of heroin, 17 kg of opium, 25 kg of ganja, seven quintals of poppy husk, 225,000 intoxicant pills and capsules,

etc., after carrying out operations in drugaffected areas. A total of 32 proclaimed offenders and absconders in the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act cases have also been arrested in the past week, he added.

Moosewala murder: Punjab Police get transit remand of 2 accused

New Delhi (IANS): A court here on Thursday granted one-day transit remand of two persons arrested in connection with the murder case of singer-turned-politician Sidhu Moosewala to Punjab Police. The two accused -- Ankit Sersa and Sachin Chaudhary -- had been in the custody of the Delhi Police in an arms case. Chief metropolitan magistrate

Snigdha Sarvaria granted their transit remand to the Mansa Police SIT team that is probing the murder of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala. Ankit Sersa and Sachin Chaudhary, who were presented at the Patiala House Court in the national capital, were to be presented at Punjab’s Mansa court on Friday.

During the course of the hearing, the Punjab Police claimed the accused were involved in the murder of Moosewala and, therefore, their questioning was required. Advocate Vishal Chopra, who had appeared for the accused persons, expressed concern on their safety and security. However, the Punjab Police told the court that sufficient steps have been taken

for the safety and security of both the accused. The police also said they are all set with a team of 36 armed police personnel and six vehicles for the transit of the accused persons. The court was also told that the transit will be video-recorded. Accordingly, the transit permit was issued. Sidhu Moosewala

Congress mulling action against Manish Tewari for defying party line

New Delhi (IANS): The Congress has sought a report on party MP Manish Tewari for his alleged anti-party line on key issues. The party is mulling action as Tewari recently defied the party line on the Agnipath scheme and supported it despite the party being against it. Sources say that a senior Congress leader close to the Gandhis called Tewari and tried to persuade him not to go against the party line. However, the next day Tewari did not sign the memorandum seeking immediate withdrawal of the Agnipath scheme, submitted by the Opposition MPs during a crucial meeting with members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Defence on Monday, sources said. This is not the first time that Tewari has taken

Manish Tewari an independent view on issues where the Congress is targeting the government. Tewari is one of the most vocal voices of G-23 and feels that since 2014 he is being ig-

nored and after his electoral win in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 he is not being given key positions in the party nor in the parliamentary party despite having a good grip over various issues. Tewari, who is considered close to former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, has a long association with the Congress starting from the National Student Union of India and was Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting in UPA-2. Tewari has been part of the parliamentary strategy group which is chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi. In the past also, Tewari has supported the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. Speaking to IANS, Tewari had said, “The process of defence reforms including right sizing the military started in the US way back in 1975 when Donald Rums-

feld was the Defence Secretary in the Ford administration and every successive administration has seen it through. Rumsfeld initiated the conceptual basis of preparing the armed forces for future warfare as he could envision the changing nature of the battlefield. Even the Chinese started the process of right-sizing the PLA way back in 1985.” Apart from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Defence Secretary, the three chiefs of the Armed Forces and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were also present at the Monday meeting. Out of the total of 12 MPs at the meeting, six were from the Opposition parties that included the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Chadha’s appointment on Punjab advisory panel challenged in High Court

Chandigarh (IANS): Just a day after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha was named Chairman of the Punjab government’s advisory panel, a petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday challenging his appointment. The petition, filed by advocate Jagmohan Singh Bhatti, contended that the appointment was illegal, arbitrary and in exercise of “non-existent” laws of the Central and state governments. It also argued that the appointment of Chadha was in violation of the Constitution as he is an “outsider and not a part of the state Legislative Assembly”. The appointment would entail unwarranted burden on the public exchequer and amount-

Raghav Chadha ed to “inviting multiple people to run the affairs of the alleged temporary and ad hoc commit-

tee to advise the government of the state of Punjab on the matters of public importance pertaining to the public administration”, said the petitioner. Amid criticism by the Opposition, the Bhagwant Mann state government on Monday appointed Chadha as Chairman of a state advisory committee on matters of public interest. The opposition parties had been saying that the Chief Minister would make Chadha the de facto Chief Minister by making him the committee’s Chairman to take part in official meetings. A notification to constitute the committee, comprising a Chairman and members, who will not be entitled to any compensation, remuneration, or perks, was issued last week.

Responding to the appointment, state Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring slammed the government and accused Mann of ceding too much power to Chadha through the committee. He said appointing Chadha as Chairman is tantamount to making him the Chief Minister of Punjab. “Punjabis did not vote for this change. It seems @BhagwantMann ji has handed over the Punjab government on contract,” said Raja Warring in a tweet. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also took a dig at the AAP-led government, saying the move has put the ‘show manager’ Chadha formally on stage.

The All-New Lexus Rz, The Luxury Brand’s First Battery EV

TORONTO, ONTARIO: Lexus is proud to unveil details of the allnew 2023 RZ 450e, the luxury brand’s first global Battery EV (BEV). As Lexus’ first global BEV model, the all-new RZ marks Lexus’ transition into a BEV-centered brand, and it embodies the unique Lexus vehicle design and driving experience made available through advanced, electrified technology. The utilization of a BEV-specific platform (e-TNGA), as well as a lightweight and highly rigid body, has enhanced the fundamental performance of the vehicle by achieving optimal weight distribution through ideal placement of the battery and motor. In addition, the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system and the adoption of a new steering control and avail-

able Steer by Wire system enable vehicle control that is more true to the driver’s intention. The exterior design expresses the seamless acceleration and dynamic torque-filled performance specific to BEVs. Lexus’ identifiable spindle grille is replaced by a

MARKHAM, ONT.: Hyundai Canada is proud to announce that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been awarded Canadian Black Book’s first-ever Best Residual Value Award in the EV SUV Below $45,000 category. Canadian Black Book’s newly introduced Best Residual Value Awards measure vehicles’ predicted future values and recognize vehicles that are expected to hold the largest percentage of their M.S.R.P. 48 months after the original date of purchase. The Residual Value Awards are designed to better represent the dynamics of Canada’s current automotive market, with greater emphasis on EV categories to reflect the growth in EV options and consumer acceptance. All new for Hyundai’s 2022 lineup, the IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s flagship EV – the first model under the company’s IONIQ brand, dedicated to battery electric vehicles – and represents the company’s commitment to a future of electrified mobility. “This year is a catalyst for greater EV adoption with a number of new nameplates entering the market, and in the ever-popular utility vehicle segment. As the consumer interest in EVs continues to increase and the viability of EV ownership as an investment is weighed

BEV Spindle Body. The new front bumper design focuses on aerodynamic efficiencies, optimized proportions, and style, versus serving the cooling and exhaust needs of an internal combustion engine. This styling evolution ushers in a new Lexus aesthetic and estab-

and evaluated, recognition from Canadian Black Book helps answer a pressing question - how good of an investment is owning an EV?” says Ken Maisonville, director of national sales at Hyundai Auto Canada. “As Canada’s mainstream EV leader, we’re thrilled to see the IONIQ 5 win this important new award which provides clarity on how EVs hold their value and gives customers a sense of the kind of market they can expect if they ever want to trade up.” In order to qualify for a Residual Value Award, the vehicle must be on sale by January 1st 2022 and must be included in the January/ February issue of the Canadian Black Book Residual Value Guide. Values are forecasted based on 48 months with an annual average of 24,000 kilometres driven and available government rebates are taken into consideration for EV models. “We are not surprised to see the Hyundai IONIQ 5 winning the EV SUV Below $45k award. Given its quality and ride, we would expect it to retail for much more than it does. That is a key reason why it will retain its value well,” says Yolanda Biswah, senior vice president and general manager of Canadian Black Book.

lishes a new design direction for BEV offerings. CT4 and the newly developed high-output electronic axle (eAxle) motor continuously controls the drive force of the four wheels with high precision. It works according to the ground contact load of the vehicle regardless of road surface and driving conditions to achieve an exhilarating driving experience in line with the driver’s intention. Available in Canada at a future date, the Lexus-first Steer by Wire system enables the electronic exchange of steering and road surface information between the advanced steering control and tires via electrical signals, not mechanical linkage. The RZ’s cabin is a minimalist, yet airy and maximally appointed

luxury environment. The flowing shape from the doors integrates with the low positioned instrument panel. The door trim and console passing between the driver and passenger seat creates a clean, wide-open feel. In addition, the ultra-suede door trim ornamentation, seats, and upper wood-grain console create a refined omotenashi, or anticipatory hospitality, space. The long wheelbase provides a spacious rear seat space with a couple distance of 1000 mm (39.3 in). In addition, the rearward peaked cabin silhouette allows for ample rear headroom providing a sense of spaciousness for the passengers. The available panoramic roof further lends a sense of wide openness and front-to-rear expansiveness.

Online grocery shopping a cause for concern

2 diabetes is punishing their chances for a long, healthy life. It’s not just sugar. It’s too many calories and lack of exercise as well. Shop smart. Monitor weight daily by stepping on a scale. See if your stools float. And, read more at www.docgiff.com about ways to ensure a healthier and longer life.

FOOD products in stores are changing. Shoppers easily find more processed, attractively packaged, and conveniently prepared meals. With online shopping, the way these products are now selected and put in the cart has changed too. For that, consumers may be paying more than just the price of inflation. Online food shopping has become the norm for many people. Home delivery of groceries may be a convenience, but consumers are losing their moment of discernment. Even if online customers take the time to click through product pages checking nutritional information, in-store shopping assistants frequently turn to substitute products and don’t take notice when ingredients in products have changed. Food deliveries arrive with frequent surprises. “That’s not what I ordered,” must be among the pandemic’s defining phrases. Online grocery shopping is a double-edged sword. It may increase healthy choices by reducing unhealthy impulse purchases and help overcome food access limitations for some. But it also increases unhealthy choices due to consumers’ reluctance, for example, to purchase fresh produce online. High fiber cereal is a good start on a grocery list. Regular consumption of high-fiber, lowsugar cereal is associated with lower risk of obesity and diabetes. When online purchases result in the delivery of cereals sweetened with sucralose, sugar, and syrup, one could argue it’s safer to eat the box! Changes in the way food makes it to market and to the table call for more vigilance by consumers. Kids and parents fail to realize that more processed foods, more calories from sugar, and more salt for preservation and taste are the start of future trouble. A focus on fiber alone tells an important story. Most North Americans consumers are eating less than 10-15 grams of fiber a day. But the recommended intake is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. Take a look at your bowel movement. If the content floats, you’re getting sufficient fiber. Insufficient fiber is associated with a higher risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which in turn lead to greater risk of heart attack, blindness, kidney failure and losing a leg due to hardening of arteries. Millions of people suffer from chronic constipation due to a lack of fiber. Grunting through bowel movements can trigger small hernias in the large bowel that may cause inflammation, sometimes perforation of the intestines and emergency surgery. Remember, no surgeon can guarantee a risk-free operation. Years ago, Dr. Denis Burkitt, an English researcher, reported that African societies consuming large amounts of fiber did not suffer from constipation or appendicitis. Later Dr. Thomas L Cleaves, a surgeon aboard the battleship King George V, was suffering from constipation. So were the sailors. Unprocessed brand cured Cleaves and the sailors. What’s the magic of fiber? It holds water in the digestive system, producing stools soft as toothpaste. Fiber is filling, decreasing the hunger reflex. Drinks containing the equivalent of eight teaspoons of sugar have no effect on satisfying the appetite. The solution: eat an apple, loaded with fiber. Knowing what you want is also knowing what you must give up to get it. Say no to sugar laden cereals. Getting this message through, especially to parents, is not easy. But setting the course for obesity and Type
