A poster of the film “Kaali” directed by Leena Manimekalai that depicts a woman dressed up as Hindu Goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette with a flag of the LGBT community in the background has created an international uproar. Manimekalai, who is pursuing her masters in fine arts in film at Ontario’s York University, has been savagely attacked on social media by Hindus offended by the poster. The movie is being screened at a festival at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa issued a press statement on Monday, saying: “We have received complaints from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about disrespectful depiction of Hindu Gods on the poster of a film showcased as part of the ‘Under the Tent’ project at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto. “Our Consulate General in Toronto has conveyed these concerns to the organizers of the event. “We are also informed that several Hindu groups have approached authorities in Canada to take action. “We urge the Canadian authorities and the event organizers to withdraw all such provocative material.” THE Aga Khan Museum later in a statement
Poster of Canadian film “Kaali” sparks outrage “Toronto Metropolitan University’s project presentation was hosted once at the Aga Khan Museum on July 2, 2022 in the context of the Museum’s mission to foster intercultural understanding and dialogue through the arts. Respect for diverse religious expressions and faith communities forms an integral part of that mission. The presentation is no longer being shown at the Museum.”
Leena Manimekalai Photo: Twitter said that it “deeply regrets that one of the 18 short videos from ‘Under the Tent’ and its accompanying social media post have inadvertently caused offence to members of the Hindu and other faith communities.” It explained: “Toronto Metropolitan University brought together works from students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, each student exploring their individual sense of belonging as part of Canadian multiculturalism for the project ‘Under the Tent.’

MISSISSAUGA-BASED Hindu Federation President Pandit Roopnauth Sharma said in a statement: “Canada is home to 1.7 million Hindus from different parts of the world who share same values, traditions and culture. Hindu Federation represents the Hindus in Canada and stands by their sentiments and values. “The recent incident of show casing the documentary film ‘Kaali’ by Leena Manimekalai as part of the ‘Under the Tent’ project in Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum, has sparked an outrage amongst the Hindu community. The poster of the documentary depicts a Hindu deity smoking a cigarette with a flag representing the LGBTQ community flowing in the background. “Hindus revere and worship their deities and see them in a form that is a result of more than 5000 years of uninterrupted tradition. The depiction is demeaning, defaming one of the most revered deities of Hinduism. Hurting the religious sentiments of a peaceful community under the guise of art and freedom of expression is not acceptable. “The Hindu Federation strongly condemns the incident and demands an unconditional apology from those responsible for this incident, as listed above. We further welcome dialogue with the related parties Leena Manimekalai, CERC (Canada Excellence Research Chairs), organizers of Under the Tent project and Management of Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, so that we may establish protocol for consultation on such matters and avoid future situations of this nature.” IANS reports from New Delhi: The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Director
Leena Manimekalai, a day after a complaint was lodged against her over a controversial poster of her new documentary, a senior police official said on Tuesday. Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalwa told IANS that a complaint was received by the police regarding the poster on social media of Goddess Kaali shown smoking a cigarette. “From the contents of the complaint and the alleged post, prima facie, an offence under section 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code was made out,” the police official said. The FIR has been registered at the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell police station. “Investigation in the matter has been taken up,” the official added. The complaint against Director Leena Manimekalai was lodged by a Delhi-based lawyer and activist Vineet Jindal on Monday. “The Director has hurt my religious sentiments by showing Goddess Kaali smoking which is highly objectionable and not acceptable in any manner,” Jindal told IANS. “This deliberate and malicious act, intended to outrage religious feelings of Hindu community through highly objectionable video and photo from her Twitter account by the accused which is well circulated in social media and all public platforms is an offence under section 295A, 298, 505, 67 I.T Act and 34 IPC and therefore penal action should be taken against the accused,” the complaint filed with the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police read. The lawyer said that the objectionable video clip and photo must be banned and removed from the Internet immediately considering the defamatory impact and outrage it would cause to Hindus as it has disparaged the religious beliefs of a community. (Cases against Manimekalai have also been registered in other states in India.)

Toronto Mayor orders City to ensure Sikhs not discriminated against for religious beliefs
TORONTO Mayor John Tory has ordered the City to take action to make sure that the more than 100 Sikh security guards removed from sites because of their beards are not discriminated against. He said: “I fully expect City staff to continue investigating this complaint and to make any and all changes necessary, up to and including legal action, to make sure Sikh residents and people of all religions are fully respected.” In a statement issued on Monday, he said: “The City of Toronto and all of its contractors must uphold human rights and fully comply with all relevant legislation and City policy. “I firmly believe that no person should be discriminated against for their religious beliefs. “I’ve asked City staff to work with all contractors involved to immediately resolve this issue and to be absolutely clear that we respect people’s human rights, including freedom of religion, and we expect all contractors to do the same and to properly accommodate employees. “No City policy allows contractors to ignore or dismiss their employees’ religious beliefs or to fail to ac-

commodate them. “Any contract employees who were not accommodated for their religious beliefs should be immediately accommodated by the contractor. If anyone was fired, the contractor should immediately rehire those individuals.” THE World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) on Monday called for the immediate reinstatement of Sikh security guards at City of Toronto sites who have been removed due to their religiously required facial hair. The City of Toronto has recently instituted a “clean shave” require-
ment for all security guards on city sites resulting in the exclusion of Sikh security guards who maintain uncut hair as a tenet of their faith. Over 100 Sikh security guards have been removed from their jobs as a result. The new City of Toronto mandate requires all security guards to be fitted for N95 respirators that seal directly on the face. Facial hair is not permitted when performing fit tests. The WSO pointed out that these Sikh security guards served through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic wearing medical masks and were not required to be clean shaven. The new clean shave rules have been introduced at a time when visitors to City sites are no longer required to be masked. The clean-shave requirement is also not being enforced for staff and workers at city sites. In response to the new rule, City of Toronto security contractors such as GardaWorld, Star Security and ASP Security have removed Sikh security guards from City of Toronto sites. Some Sikh guards have been laid off while others have been sent to alternative sites.
Tejinder Singh Sidhu Such relocations often come with a demotion in both rank and salary. In many instances, individuals who had been hired as supervisors or managers have been demoted to security guards. The WSO noted that in a similar situation, bearded Sikh RCMP officers were removed from frontline policing duties in March 2020 as the RCMP required that all officers be fitted with N95 masks. The officers were allowed to return to duty in October 2020 after advocacy by the WSO. The World Sikh Organization of Canada had written to Mayor John Tory and all members of Toronto City Council on June 7, 2022, asking for an urgent resolution to the
current situation. No substantive reply has been received to that correspondence. WSO President Tejinder Singh Sidhu said: “It is completely unreasonable that Sikh security guards who served in their positions at the City of Toronto through the height of the pandemic are now being terminated, reassigned, or demoted for not being clean-shaven. “Visitors to City of Toronto sites are not required to mask and City staff are also not being asked to be clean shaven. It is unacceptable that the City of Toronto is unwilling to accommodate over 100 dedicated Sikh security guards who are committed to doing their jobs. “Mayor John Tory and the City of Toronto must find a solution for these Sikh security guards and other affected employees. Those Sikh guards who have been removed must be immediately reinstated. “Sikh police officers and other frontline care workers have served throughout the pandemic without being required to compromise their faith. There is no reason why Sikh security guards at the City of Toronto cannot be accommodated in accordance with the law.”

United Truckers Association votes unanimously in favour of labour action
A Canada Day vote by members of the United Truckers Association (UTA) over the long weekend produced an emphatic 639-0 result in support of a shutdown at the Port of Vancouver. The UTA said on Tuesday that faced with crippling costs associated with the incoming Rolling Truck Age Program (RTAP) and an ongoing unwillingness for good faith discussions by the Port’s leadership, it is now preparing to commence labour disruption that “will create shockwaves across Canada’s already fragile supply chain.” Set to launch in September, the RTAP will put extreme financial burden on container truckers amidst the highest rates of inflation and unaffordability in a generation. The Port’s decision flies in the face of current rules and regulations across British Columbia, where the other 98% of commerciallylicensed trucks face no equivalent measures, the UTA said. Members, however, have pledged to keep the month of July open for potential negotiations before taking action, according to UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh. “While the overwhelming will of our members is now evident, we continue to hold out hope to achieve meaningful exchange and resolution together with the Port of Vancouver and the Government of Canada,” said Singh. “The UTA will only move forward with our shutdown in August should the current plan proceed without mitigation.” Over the coming weeks, the UTA will publicly outline the contradictions and politics behind the Port of Vancouver’s alleged efforts to tackle carbon emissions. Accompanying this information will be the organization’s continued efforts towards outreach to avoid the first labour-related action at the Port of Vancouver since 2014. The UTA said it is extending an olive branch for open, honest and pragmatic mediation with Port of Vancouver officials and the federal government in spite of five months of silence by Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra. “Even though the Minister stepped in to

health interventions in South Asian communities across Canada. During the pandemic, this charity made waves globally for creating awareness about COVID-19 in a culturally effective manner. Through his advocacy and innovations, he received $175,000 in funding to help bring an end to COVID-19 and inform policy changes at the national level. Sachal is the founder of the Sikh Health Foundation, which aims to improve public
IN his acceptance speech, Sukhmeet Singh Sachal said: “I would like to thank CaRMS for naming me as the recipient of the prestigious Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership. In Sikhism, there is a concept known as Seva, which means selfless service.
Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to have many wonderful mentors who have guided me to this path of selfless service. “Having gone through medical school through a pandemic was challenging to say the least. However, seeing the heroic actions of physicians, allied health workers, and my fellow medical student colleagues inspired me to take action. “A lot of what I do stems from seeing the problems or barriers around me and trying to find ways to work with community members to enact change. This is how the Sikh Health Foundation was born. “I am proud that this organization has helped educate over 250,000 people across Canada since the pandemic started. As well, the organization now serves as a hub for youth to get involved with research, knowledge translation, and enacting policy changes. “I would like to thank the entire CaRMS committee for this honour. I dedicate this award to every single person across Canada who did their part to help bring an end to this pandemic. As we continue into new health challenges, I urge us all to bring out the leaders within us to continue making a difference.”
Safe Surrey Coalition will protect 220 acres of farmland as Mayor McCallum initiates action
SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on said on Wednesday that 220 acres of farmland at 192nd Street and 36th Avenue must be preserved. He pointed out that protecting high yield agricultural land is fundamental to ensuring future food security in the region and the Province, and added: “These lands are currently zoned Agricultural (A-1) and I’m determined to see this land designated as ‘agricultural’ as part of the Official Community Plan (OCP) review pro-
cess taking place next year.” Councillor Laurie Guerra said: “On July 11, Mayor Doug McCallum and Safe Surrey Coalition will bring forward a motion to protect 220 acres of farmland from industrial development.” “Safe Surrey Coalition made a promise to voters to ‘pause development’ and to only proceed with ‘smart development’ as such our motion will remove these lands from the Campbell
Safe Surrey Coalition slams Councillor Locke for “lying” about City’s most dangerous intersection SAFE Surrey Coalition on Friday slammed Surrey Councillor Brenda Locke for repeatedly claiming that “ICBC data and City of Surrey staff reports were wrong to state 88 Avenue and King George Boulevard was not the most dangerous intersection in Surrey and that she knew the truth.” SSC accused Locke of saying “anything and everything to get your vote.” SSC said: “Now in 2022, ICBC has again released new data clearly showing that 88 Avenue and King George Boulevard is the most dangerous intersection in Surrey causing 933 crashes.” It added: “The facts are out, Brenda Locke opposes building the 84 Avenue road connector that would prevent injury and deaths on King George Boulevard. To receive media attention, Brenda Locke promoted her false narrative to oppose 84 Avenue road
Brenda Locke connector at the expense of the lives of Surrey residents.”
Heights Official Community Plan and designate the lands as ‘agricultural.’ Furthermore, we will advocate to the Province to include these lands inside the Agricultural Land Reserve,” added Councilor Allison Patton. Councillor Mandeep Nagra noted: “Located at 192 Street and 36 Avenue, this 220-acre parcel of lands is critical to supplying over 50 million servings of locally grown fresh vegetables to BC grocery stores.”
“We must ensure we take concrete actions now to protect our food security and local jobs for Surrey farmers,” said Councilor Doug Elford. McCallum pointed out: “Protecting these farmlands from development is an important step towards climate change mitigation and to ensure that our future generations have a reliable source of locally grown produce for generations to come.”

Five-lane Steveston interchange breaks ground in Richmond
GROUND was officially broken on Thursday on the new five-lane Steveston interchange in Richmond as part of the project that will see the George Massey Tunnel replaced with a new tollfree crossing. The new interchange will improve public transit, shorten travel times for drivers, and improve active transportation connections. “It’s an important day as we move forward on addressing one of the worst bottlenecks in Richmond,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “I look forward to work getting underway that will improve connections for transit users, drivers and cyclists, and tie in to the new eight-lane toll-free tunnel that will replace the George Massey Tunnel.” Work is ramping up on the Steveston interchange site this summer, with clearing and utility relocations getting underway in the coming weeks. Major construction will begin this year, with the new interchange expected to be in operation in 2025. “While Highway 99 is a major regional connector, it’s also a local connector, and we know that this project will make life easier for people in
Transportation Minister Rob Fleming and Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie (5th and 6th from the left, respectively). Photos by SUKHWANT DHILLON / AM 600 Sher-E-Punjab Radio the Steveston community,” said Kelly Greene, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. “Part of our work to make life better for British Columbians involves improving connections that will get people where they want to go within their communities and beyond.” The Steveston interchange will help move people and goods faster and safer by replacing the
existing two-lane overpass at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 with a five-lane structure that accommodates two eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes, including a left-turn lane. The new interchange will improve access to transit stops and provide safe pedestrian and cycling connections across Highway 99, with
sidewalks and separated bike lanes on both sides of the overpass. “The Steveston Highway interchange project is an important infrastructure upgrade and a critical component of the overall Highway 99 improvements, which will ultimately improve the lives of those in Richmond and commuters through the corridor,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The Steveston overpass and interchange design, including three extra lanes along with dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths on both sides of the twinning overpass, will improve safety and increase efficiency in moving business and commuter traffic, while reducing congestion and vehicle emissions.” The new Steveston interchange is an important component of the Highway 99 Tunnel Program. It will improve connections to and from Highway 99 as well as reduce congestion for eastwest traffic. Once the new tunnel is in place, travel time and reliability will be improved for traffic headed from Steveston Highway into the tunnel, further reducing congestion at the Steveston interchange and on the Highway 99 corridor.

Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. The proclamation describes Singh as “a humanitarian, scholar and tireless advocate for Sikhs in Canada who dedicated his life to challenging inequality, fighting for a just society and serving without discrimination in accordance with the tenets of Sikhism”. Sant Teja Singh was a pioneer for the Sikhs and immigrants who call Canada home today. They stood against the government at times when the Sikhs and other minority groups were oppressed. The remarkable achievements of Sant Teja Singh paved the way for Sikhs and people of Indian descent to live and work in this country. Some of the accomplishments include establishing the first gurdwara in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., the establishment of the Khalsa Diwan Society in Vancouver, and creating the Guru Nanak Mining and Trust Company. These accomplishments allowed Sikhs to get a strong foothold in Canada and continue to work hard to achieve success in this country. Sant Teja Singh was a towering spiritual leader of the Sikh community who had fought for the equal rights to the immigrants, especially those who began coming to BC from India. Those who came to Canada had to endure blatant racism as they were not allowed to bring in their families, and they didn’t have the right to vote. The authorities who wanted to keep Canada as a “white man’s land” adopted several policies that were aimed at discouraging permanent settlement of Indian immigrants in BC. The government created a plan to relocate Indian immigrants to Honduras. Sant Teja Singh who came to know about such plans, stood against the government and helped the immigrants establish themselves in British Columbia. (Contributed)

demic began, and concerns around access to health and dental care. “Families are struggling as they pay more for food and gas, and also to keep a roof over their heads,” said Singh. “Canadians are feeling crushed by the soaring cost of living while big corporations are making billions off people’s backs without paying their fair share of taxes. That is why we are calling on the Liberals to make sure the ultra-wealthy are paying their fair share and redistributing $1000 back into Canadian’s pockets by doubling the GST tax credit and increasing the Canada Child Benefit to help working families struggling with the rising cost of living.” In addition to helping with the rising cost of living, the NDP is asking the government to help provincial and territorial health care systems cope with the increased demand for services. For the past seven years, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has maintained the cuts to the Canada Health Transfer that the Harper government put in place. New Democrats have been urging the Liberal government to restore health care funding to ensure provinces and territories have enough beds for patients, more staff to address shortages and improved diagnostic services that save lives. “People in our communities have been through a lot in the last couple of years. Canadians rightly expect the health care services they need will be there when they need it,” said Zarrillo. “People need the government to take actions that make it easier for them to stay healthy like making investments in healthcare and dental care. The federal government must increase healthcare transfers immediately to the provinces and territories to ensure there are enough frontline health care workers to take care of people when they become sick.” While the urgent need for health care services is a huge concern in the Lower Mainland, the NDP MPs also met with community leaders to discuss the rise of racism people have experienced in their communities since the pandemic began. For instance, anti-Asian racism has been on the rise. Trudeau’s Liberal government must take further action to tackle hate crimes – words are not enough, said the MPs. “Racism and hate have no place in Canada,” added Julian. “That is why I tabled a bill that aims to ban symbols of hate. People want their government to stop the spread of hate in our communities to keep families safe. The NDP is ready to work with everyone committed to eliminating hate from our places of work, leisure, and communities.”

AT its regular meeting on July 6, 2022, Surrey Police Board reported on its year-to-date expenditures to May 31, which shows Surrey Police Service (SPS) is nearly $7M underspent in its operational budget. The funding for SPS comes from two sources: the council-approved one-time budget to fund the transition from the RCMP to SPS, and an operational budget that is funded through the City of Surrey. For 2022, the City of Surrey allocated $72.5M of its police services operational budget to SPS, which is 37% of the overall $194.8M used to fund all police services in Surrey (SPS, RCMP and civilian police support services). The Surrey Police Board only has oversight of its own operational budget ($74.8M, including capital reserve), which it reports publicly.

IHIT investigators are able to confirm that Mohamed was involved in drug trafficking but unable to confirm any gang connection at this time. First responders found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics attempted life-saving intervention but the victim died at scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to investigate. Shortly after the shooting occurred, a vehicle was found on fire in an alleyway in the 12400-block of 96 Avenue in Surrey. Homicide investigators have linked this vehicle fire to the shooting at the Days Inn Hotel. Both scenes have been processed and items were collected for forensic exam. Canvassing for witnesses and CCTV is continuing. IHIT is working in partnership with Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service. Homicide investigators are also in contact with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC) for timely sharing of

Request for proposals issued for new hospital and BC Cancer Centre in Surrey
THE request for proposals (RFP) has been issued for a new hospital and BC Cancer Centre at 5500 180 Street in Surrey. “Our government is delivering on its commitment of a new hospital for people in Surrey, and we are proceeding to the next stage of the procurement process,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, on Monday. “This important next step means we are closer to seeing what the hospital will look like, to shovels in the ground and construction starting, and to the new hospital opening for patients.” Two proponents are on the short list to lead the project design and construction as a result of the request for qualifications process, which ended on March 17. The proponents are EllisDon Design Build Inc. and PCL Construction Ltd. The RFP process normally takes about a year to finalize. Construction is expected to start in summer 2023 with the facility scheduled to be ready for patients in 2027. The project is proceeding with a design-build procurement process in which the preferred proponent enters into a fixed-price, fixed-schedule contract with Fraser Health to design and build the facility to meet standards and performance requirements specified by Fraser Health. “Today marks an important step forward in our planning for a new, state-of-the-art hospital and BC Cancer Centre that will provide care for hundreds of thousands of people living and work-
department with 55 treatment spaces, and virtual care options in all clinical service areas. The facility will have a large medical imaging department, including three CT scanners and two MRI machines, as well as pharmacy, laboratory and academic spaces. There will be a dedicated area for spiritual care and family gatherings that support cultural diversity and spiritual practices. The new BC Cancer Centre will include an oncology ambulatory care unit with 50 exam rooms, 54 chemotherapy treatment spaces and room for six linear accelerators for radia-
tion therapy to provide care and support for people diagnosed with cancer. “We are pleased to reach this next milestone in the construction of a new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre and look forward to continuing to work in partnership with Fraser Health to improve access to and capacity for cancer care across this rapidly growing and aging region,” said David Byres, President and Chief Executive Officer, Provincial Health Services Authority. “This work will bring life-saving and life-enhancing cancer treatment closer to home for patients and families for years to come.”
Adrian Dix Photo: BC Government ing in the fastest-growing community in B.C.,” said Dr. Victoria Lee, President and CEO, Fraser Health. “As a fully digitally equipped community hospital, this facility will usher in a new era for acute care in our region, enabling us to increase our regional capacity in areas such as emergency, surgical, inpatient, ambulatory care, diagnostics and cancer care services, while better supporting patient-centred care, closer to home.” The new hospital will have 168 beds, a surgical/perioperative suite with five operating rooms, four procedure rooms, an emergency

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday tied the knot with Gurpreet Kaur, a doctor from Haryana, in a low-key small private ceremony as per Sikh rituals at his official residence here amidst the presence of Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal. It is for the first time that a marriage ceremony was solemnized in the Chief Minister's residence. Mann, 48, divorced his first wife Inderpreet Kaur in 2015. He has two children from that marriage -- daughter Seerat Kaur Mann (21) and son Dilshan Singh Mann (17), who attended Mann's swearing-in ceremony on March 16. The Chief Minister made a surprise wedding announcement
a day earlier. It is believed to be an arranged marriage. Donning golden attire and a yellow turban with traditional studded 'kalgi' atop, groom Mann arrived for the wedding under a Phulkari 'dupatta' with AAP Rajya
London, July 8 (IANS) : Indianorigin former Chancellor of the Exchequer in the British government Rishi Sunak on Friday formally launched his bid to become leader of the Conservative Party. If he succeeds, he will automatically become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He tweeted: "I'm standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your prime minister." He added: "Let's restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country." He also launched a website ready4rishi.com. Sunak posted along with the tweet a three-minute video setting out his intentions. He said: "I got into politics because I want everyone in this country to have those same opportunities, to be able to give their children a better
future." He continued: "Our country faces huge challenges, the most serious for a generation. And the decisions we make today will decide whether the next generation of British people will also have the chance of a better future." Sunak shot from relative obscurity to fame when the justousted Prime Minister Boris Johnson fast-tracked him to the powerful post of Chancellor in 2020. He had been a Member of Parliament for less than five years. He became quite popular within months by providing financial support during the Covid pandemic, including furloughs to employees and soft loans to employers. But the public liking for him was dented when this year he
Sabha member Raghav Chadha, Kejriwal and a select few AAP senior leaders walking beside him. Kejriwal performed the wedding rituals as Mann's elder brother. Bride Kaur, 32, an MBBS degree holder from Maharishi
Markandeshwar University in Mullana in Ambala district, is the youngest of three sisters. The elder ones are settled in the US and Australia. Just hours before tying the knot, Mann's would-be bride said the auspicious day has come. "Din Shagna Da Chadyaa (the auspicious day has come (for her wedding)," Kaur tweeted and also posted her photo. Only close family members, including Mann's mother, sister and a few relatives and friends attended the wedding. Consul General of Canada in Chandigarh, Patrick Hebert, greeted the Chief Minister by tweeting, "Beautiful day for a wedding in #Chandigarh. Congratulations to Chief Minister @BhagwantMann and @DrGurpreetKaur_and best wishes for a happy life!"
introduced taxes to reduce the government's heavy borrowings. This was followed by controversy over his wife avoiding paying taxes in Britain and instead doing so at a lower rate in India from her dividends from shares in Infosys, the Bangalore-based software
giant founded by her father N.R. Narayana Murthy. Sunak was then accused of retaining his Green Card in the US, where he had studied and worked. It will not be surprising if his opponents in the upcoming competition cite his wife's matter and the Green Card issue against him. The son of a medical practitioner is, however, still one of the favourites in the contest, with probably Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, the current favourite. Earlier, the BBC had reported: "A YouGov poll of 716 Conservative party members placed Ben Wallace just ahead of Penny Mordaunt, who was followed by Rishi Sunak." The sample was small and, therefore, the response is not entirely reliable.

Strong Karnataka-Korea relations to boost economy: Chief Minister Bommai
Bengaluru (IANS): Strengthening of relations between the Republic of Korea, which is a global powerhouse in electronics and automobiles sector, and Karnataka, a frontline state in technology, would give a boost to bilateral economy, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday. The Chief Minister held a bilateral discussion with a delegation of the Republic of Korea, led by its Ambassador to India Chang Jae-bok. Noting that Karnataka has had close ties with Korea for many decades, Bommai commended Korea for manufacturing excellent products with state-of-the-art technology. “India and Karnataka state are emerging

as major economies with skilled human resources. India is a hot favourite as an investment destination. Karnataka is in the forefront among the states attracting about 38 per cent of the total FDI flowing into the country,” Bommai said. Karnataka is home to highest number of international R & D centres in the world, it is the global hub of technology-based industries. Against this backdrop, it would be of great mutual advantage economically if Korea and Karnataka joined hands, Bommai pitched to the South Korean delegation. The Chief Minister invited the Korean delegation to participate in a big way in the Bengaluru Tech Summit and Karnataka Global Investors Meet to be held in November.
Speaking earlier, the South Korean Ambassador Chang Jae-bok said Korea is keen to further strengthen its economic relations with Karnataka. “Many startups are eager to invest in Karnataka. Already over 40 Korean companies have a presence here. The Korean Consular office has organised a programme ‘Korea on the move’ in Bengaluru which is drawing a huge response from the people. A programme organised on economic cooperation too has been a big success.” he stated. Karnataka’s Large and Medium Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani, Additional Chief Secretary in the department of Industries E.V. Ramana Reddy and other senior officials were also present.
Shinzo Abe: Japan ex-leader’s alleged killer held grudge against group, say police Tokyo: Police investigating the assassination of Japan’s ex-prime minister Shinzo Abe have said the suspect held a grudge against a “specific organisation”. The alleged gunman, named as Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, believed Abe was part of the group and shot him for that reason, they said, without naming the group. Abe died in hospital on Friday morning after being shot while speaking at a political campaign event.

Tetsuya Yamagami has admitted shooting him with a homemade gun, police said. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister and his death at the age of 67 has profoundly shocked a country where gun crime is very rare. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he was “simply speechless” at the news of Abe’s death, vowing that Japan’s democracy would “never yield to violence”. Police are still investigating whether his

killer acted alone and why Abe was targeted out of other people related to the unnamed organisation. Abe was giving a speech for a political candidate at a road junction in the southern city of Nara when the attacker struck from behind. Witnesses described a man carrying a large gun move within a few metres of Abe and fire twice at the former PM, who fell to the ground as bystanders screamed in shock and disbelief. Photos circulating in the aftermath of the shooting showed the suspect standing just behind Abe as he gave his speech. Security officers dived on to the gunman who made no attempt to run after he fired on Abe. The weapon that killed the politician was made using metal and wood, officers said, and appeared to be wrapped in duct tape.

Several other handmade guns and explosives were later found at the suspect’s home. Abe suffered two bullet wounds to his neck during the attack and also suffered damage to his heart. He was said to be conscious and responsive in the minutes after the attack, but doctors said no vital signs were detected by the time the former prime minister was transferred for treatment. Medics worked for hours to save him and Abe received more than 100 units of blood in transfusions, before he was pronounced dead at 5.03pm local time. The politician was out campaigning for his former party, the Liberal Democratic Party, in the run-up to elections on Sunday. On Japanese social media, the hashtag “We want democracy, not violence” was trending throughout Friday, with many social media users expressing their horror and disgust about the incident. Gun violence is extremely rare in Japan, where handguns are banned and incidents of political violence are almost unheard of. In 2014, there were just six incidents of gun deaths in Japan, as compared to 33,599 in the US. People have to undergo a strict exam and mental health tests in order to buy a gun. Even then, only shotguns and air rifles are allowed.

Father-daughter duo create history, fly Hawk-132 aircraft in same formation
New Delhi (IANS): A fatherdaughter duo recently created history in the Air Force by flying as part of the same fighter formation. Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma, who is a seasoned fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force, and his daughter Ananya Sharma, who was commissioned as a fighter pilot in December 2021, flew in the same formation of Hawk-132 Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT) at Air Force Station, Bidar on May 30, 2022.
“Father-daughter duo created history on 30 May 2022, flew in same formation of Hawk-132 ace at AirForce Stn Bidar, where Flying Officer Ananya Sharma is undergoing training before graduating onto faster & more superior fighter aircraft of @IAF_MCC,” said IAF on Tuesday. It added further that there has not been any previous instance in the IAF where a father and his daughter were part of the same formation for a mission. “They
were comrades, who had full faith in each other as fellow wingmen would,” added the statement. Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma was commissioned in the fighter stream of the IAF in 1989 and has had an extensive experience of fighter operations, having commanded a Mig-21 Sqn as well as a frontline fighter station. With the induction of the first batch of three women pilots, the fighter stream of the IAF was opened for women in 2016.
Pakistan army chief tells military, ISI to stay away from politics
Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has issued fresh directions to all his commanders and key officers, including those associated with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to stay away from politics and avoid interacting with politicians. These directions have been given in the wake of Imran Khan-led PTI propaganda against the military establishment alleging certain ISI officials of having been involved in political engineering to manipulate the upcoming by-elections in Punjab to the disadvantage of PTI, The News reported. Defence sources lament over these alle-
gations and disclosed that the ISI sector commander, Lahore, who is being maligned by the PTI leaders, is not even in Lahore for over a fortnight in connection with some of his professional work in Islamabad. PTI leader and former Health Minister of Punjab, Yasmin Rashid recently named the sector commander and alleged him of having been involved in politics to engineer the by-elections in the province. Before Rashid, it was former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi who had alleged that some invisible forces are active General Qamar Javed Bajwa
to influence the by-elections in the province against the PTI, The News reported. Of late, the PTI Chairman Imran Khan also alleged that some of his candidates have complained to him of receiving telephone calls from unknown numbers. He also said that his party leaders and workers were being pressured to manipulate the by-elections. Defence sources insist that the PTI, instead of maligning the security establishment, should share the evidence. These sources claimed that even if an iota of evidence is provided, strict action would be initiated against responsible.
Glitches disrupt supply as Narmada water reaches Gujarat’s Kutch
Bhuj (IANS): The residents of Mod Kuba vilage under the Mandavi taluka in Gujarat’s Kutch district were pleasantly surprised on Wednesday when water from the Narmada river reached their area. However, the happiness did not even last for 24 hours as a slab of the canal broke on Thursday, leading to disruption in water supply in the village. The water gushed out into all the surround-
ing farms. Many nearby villages faced water-logging after the slab of the canal broke. The locals accused the state government of corruption in the construction of the canal, as the project was going on since 2017 and yet they had not received any water. However, Kutch MLA Virendresinh Jadeja said that the water reached the villages as part of a trial.
“Contractors conduct trials so that they can repair all the faults. A slab fell after the trial. But after five years of construction, it is the contractor’s duty to maintain the canal... It’s not the government’s fault. This happened in the morning, and I guess it has been repaired by now,” Jadeja said. An official on condition of anonymity said that the trial of the project has been started. “The glitches will be restored in a few days and then again, the
water supply will be normal,” he added. Earlier on Wednesday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had tweeted, “Water of Narmada river reaches Kutch. This was a dream project of PM Narendra Modi, and his efforts and inspiration made this possible. This project was started in 2017 so that water could reach the agricultural and industrial areas of Kutch.”
Malayalam actor Sreejith Ravi arrested under POCSO Act
Thiruvananthapuram (IANS): Malayalam actor Sreejith Ravi was arrested in Thrissur on Thursday under the POCSO Act on charge of indecent exposure. Sreejith, son of popular actor T.G. Ravi, was arrested for a similar offence in 2016, but he
managed to wriggle out after the police allegedly registered the case under flimsy grounds. On July 4, two children aged 14 and 9 complained to police about a man who came in a black car behaved indecently at a park in Thrissur - the cultural capital of the state.

Amarinder Singh likely to be named NDA candidate for Vice President New Delhi (IANS): Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is in the race to become the next Vice President of India. Sources said that the NDA is likely to name the fromer Punjab Chief Minister as its candidate for the Vice President’s post. “Several names are doing the rounds of which the prominent ones are Amarinder Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar
Abbas Naqvi. The vice presidential candidate will be finalised by the top BJP leadership and the Parliamentary Board,” said a BJP insider. Singh is currently in London for a back surgery. However, a close aide of the former Punjab Chief Minister said that no confirmation has been received yet proposing Singh’s name as NDA’s nominee for the Vice President’s post. There is also a buzz in BJP circles that incumbent Vice President M.
Venkaiah Naidu could be given a second term, but as of now there have been no official deliberations on this. Singh left the Congress and formed the Punjab Lok Congress after he was removed from the post of Punjab Chief Minister last year. He contested the recent Punjab Assembly polls in alliance with the BJP. The BJP-led NDA candidate is all set to become the next Vice President as the voters are the Mem-
bers of Parliament and the BJP has a huge mandate in the Lok Sabha while in the Rajya Sabha, it is the single-largest party having more than 90 seats. In the last election in 2017, the Opposition had fielded Gopalkrishna Gandhi but he lost to Naidu. Naidu polled 516 votes while Gandhi could manage only 244 votes. The Vice Presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 6. Amarinder Singh
Punjab to provide 600 units of free power to every household per billing cycle
Chandigarh (IANS): In a major relief to households, the Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday gave approval to provide 600 units of free power to every household per billing cycle in the state with effect from July 1. A spokesman for the Chief Minister’s office said all domestic
consumers in the state would be eligible to get zero bills if their consumption is up to 600 units in every billing cycle. This will give a big reprieve to the domestic consumers who have had to shell out huge sums of money every month in the form of power tariff. As per the decision, the Scheduled
Castes (SC), non SC BPL (Below Poverty Line) and backward class domestic consumers, who are currently eligible for free 400 units (per billing cycle), will also get a subsidy of 600 units now. Likewise, freedom fighters of Punjab and their successors up to grandchildren, and domestic consumers, who are currently eligible
for free 400 units, will also get subsidy of 600 units per billing cycle. In case the consumption of the SC, non-SC BPL, backward class and freedom fighter categories exceeds units per billing cycle, then they will pay only for units consumed in addition to 600 units along with full fixed charges, meter rentals and government levies as
applicable. Similarly, the Cabinet also gave the green signal for waiving off pending arrears of all domestic consumers as on December 31, 2021, and unpaid up to June 30, 2022. This move will give relief to around 28.10 lakh domestic consumers with a total benefit of Rs 1,298 crore [1 lakh = 100,000 / 1 crore = 10 million].

New Delhi (IANS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday said that they have filed charge sheet before the special NIA court, Mohali against four accused in the conspiracy behind the killing of a Hindu priest by Khalistan Tiger Force militants in Jalandhar in January 2021.
The case pertains to attack on priest Kamaldeep Sharma at village Bhar Singh Pura, Phillaur, Jalandhar by Kamaljeet Sharma alias Kamal and Ram Singh alias Sona on the alleged directions of two Canada-based men. The case was initially registered on Janu-

Hindu priest. The arrested accused Sharma and Sona had shot at the victim Kamaldeep Sharma,” an NIA official said. Based on the investigation, the NIA charge sheeted all four under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Arms Act.
Punjab Chief Minister expands Cabinet by inducting five legislators Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday carried out his first Cabinet expansion by inducting five legislators, including second-time MLA Aman Arora, into his council of ministers. The expansion came in less than four months of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sweeping to victory in the Assembly elections by winning 92 seats of the 117 seats.
Governor Banwari Lal Purohit administered the oath to the five new ministers in the presence of the Chief Minister. With their induction, the total strength of the council of ministers rose to 15, including the Chief Minister. There are still eight vacancies. Arora, the second time legislator Bhagwant Mann
from Sunam and who recorded the highest victory margin of 75,277 votes, was the first person to take oath of office and secrecy, followed by Amritsar South legislator Inderbir Singh Nijjar, who was the pro tem Speaker, Guru Harsahai legislator Fauja Singh Sarari, who belongs to the Rai Sikh community, Samana legislator Chetan Singh Jouramajra, and Kharar legislator and singer-
turned-politician Anmol Gagan Mann, who was the party’s youth wing president. The order of taking oath was as per their seniority in the Cabinet. In an unprecedented action against corruption, Health Minister Vijay Singla was sacked from the state Cabinet on May 24 and arrested on corruption charges with Mann saying his government has zero tolerance for corruption.

Delhi Police nabs third shooter in Moose Wala murder case
New Delhi (IANS): The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested the third shooter who was involved in the murder of famous Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and another most wanted gangster of the Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar gang alliance, an official said on Monday. The shooter, identified as Ankit Sirsa, was also previously found involved in two other heinous cases of attempt to murder in Rajasthan while the other accused, identified as Sachin Choudhary alias Sachin Bhiwani was responsible for harboring four of the shooters. “The duo were nabbed near Mahatma Gandhi Marg, near Kashmiri Gate Bus stand on Sunday around 11.00 p.m.,” Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalwa said. The senior official said that Sachin Bhiwani was the main person handling all the operations of Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Rajasthan. “He was also wanted in a heinous case of Churu, Rajasthan,” Nalwa said. At the time of their apprehension, the Special Cell recovered three Punjab Police uniforms from their possession apart from one pistol of 9 mm bore along with 10 live cartridges and one pistol of .30 mm

Ankit Sirsa alias Chhota, an ambidextrous sharpshooter, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, was most desperate to commit the crime, police said. “He fired simultaneously from two pistols in his two hands,” H.G.S. Dhaliwal, Special Commissioner (Special Cell), said during a media briefing. The accused shooter was closest to Moose Wala’s car during the shootout.
Police said Sachin Choudhary provided shelter to the module of four shooters, immediately after the murder of the singer. Later, he even helped them escape to Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and provided shelter there. Moose Wala, 28, was shot dead on May 29 by six assailants who fired over 30 shots at him near Jawaharke village in Punjab’s Mansa district. Sidhu was found soaked in blood

on the driver’s seat of his Mahindra Thar SUV while two more occupants in the car, Gurwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh, also received bullet injuries, but survived. The Special CP said during the past 30-35 days, these attackers changed over 30 locations and were constantly on the run to evade arrest. The major breakthrough was achieved when the Special Cell on June 19 arrested module head Priyavrat alias Fauji and Kashish alias Kuldeep, and a facilitator named Keshav Kumar from Kutch district in Gujarat. They unravelled the conspiracy and execution of the crime.
After their arrest, the remaining members of the alliance continuously changed their hideouts, and sparingly used mobile phones for communication through end-to-end encrypted chat platforms. The police have arrested three of the six shooters so far — Priyavrat, Kashish and Ankit alias Chhota. Three others are still at large. News reports say that police also recovered photos of Sirsa brandishing pistols. These include one with him posing with an associate and another showing him holding a pistol in his left hand with bullets arranged to read “Moosewala”.

Munich: With the official presentation in the run-up to the SRO race recently at the VIRginia International Raceway (USA), BMW M Motorsport has rung in the sales phase of the new BMW M4 GT4, which is set to continue its predecessor’s run of success in the internationally established GT4 category as of the 2023 season. The car was on display with the BMW M Motorsport design for the first time on having previously successfully completed a test race in camouflage livery at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (GER). The new BMW M4 GT4 goes on sale with plenty of technical highlights and at a net price of 187,000 euros. “We took on the challenge to develop a successor to the highly successful first-generation BMW M4 GT4”, said Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M. “Using a wide range of customer feedback, our experienced development team and the new sixth generation BMW M4 based production car has led to a faster, even more reliable and very
emotional all new BMW M4 GT4.” The new BMW M4 GT4 was developed to win races and titles, just like its predecessor. To this end, the latest key technologies from the production model have been combined with a range of components from its
big brother, the BMW M4 GT3. The developers focused on four key areas: performance, reliability, cost efficiency and maintainability. In addition, further developments in ergonomics and electronics have considerably improved the customer experience. These include the M Track Cockpit, which makes many vehicle settings and checks possible directly via the control elements, thereby minimising the more time-consuming connection to a laptop. When developing the new BMW M4 GT4, BMW M Motorsport had the backing of support from strong partners. Bcomp, H&R, PUMA, RAVENOL and RECARO shared valuable expertise in their areas, and in doing so made an important contribution to the success of the project. After the presentation in the USA, the BMW M4 GT4 is enter-
ing the final phase of testing. This will include the car taking part in the next race of the Nürburgring Endurance Series and in the 24 Hours of Portimão (POR). Production for delivery to customers is due to start in October 2022. The net price of the BMW M4 GT4 has been set at 187,000 euros. Thanks to nearproduction development and the pending SRO homologation, the car can be used in all GT4 race series around the world. Technical highlights and specifications of the BMW M4 GT4 include: a wheelbase of 2,857 mm and variable height according tTo tires size and suspension setting. The drivetrain comprises of: a 2,993cc six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower turbo technology, with Valvetronic Engine management: Production-ECU, power for BoP management adjustable four
valves per cylinder, and direct injection. Power output is up to 405 kW / 550 hp & 650 Nm torque (depending on regulations) The transmission is a: 7-speed automatic gearbox by ZF with motorsport software, DREXLER limited slip differential with separate temperature controlled auxiliary cooling, motorsport optimised driveshafts. Further technical highlights include: Air conditioning, heated windscreen as standard, M Track cockpit and laptop-less functions, FANATEC GT4 illuminated steering wheel with various controls, and 10-step traction control. Exterior additions include; engine bonnet with aero designed louvres, GT3 lightweight roof (CFK), Adjustable GT3 concept Motorsport rear wing (natural fibre). Suspension and handling aids offer: Five-level adjustable motorsport anti-roll bar front and rear, purpose-built KW 2-way Motorsport shock absorbers with Three different H&R spring rates, Front camber adjustable with shims, Rear toe and camber adjustable with shims, high performance wheels with double-flow brake air cooling. Interior details include: Purpose-built RECARO safety-seat with ventilation, fixed position and BMW M4 GT4 branding, interior and exterior made from lightweight natural fibre by Bcomp, Despit its complexity the new BMW M4 GT4 has a focus on ease of maintenance. Saturday, July 09, 2022 | Indo-Canadian Voice Main Richmond hill, on: After two years of lockdowns and social distancing, MINI is delighted to bring its community together once again to celebrate all things MINI – including the brand’s twentieth anniversary in Canada. MINI United – a brand celebration now in its sixth installment – takes places in British Columbia on August 27 and 28. MINI United is the evolution of MINI Invasion, an event that began in Toronto in 2010. Four years later, MINI fans “Stormed the Fort” in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. They then “Headed for the Hill” in Ottawa, Ontario in 2015 and “Rallyed en Masse” to Montreal, Quebec in 2017. In 2019, they “Trekked to PEC” in Prince Edward County, Ontario. This year’s “MINI United” takes place in beautiful Kelowna, B.C., marking the first time the festivities will occur on Canada’s west coast. “MINI has an uncanny way of bringing people together,” said Mat Sayer, director, MINI Canada. “There’s a real sense of family with this brand, a sense of belonging. A MINI customer doesn’t own a MINI; their MINI is a part of the family. Just like no two people are the same, no two MINIs are the same. We’re all different, all our cars are different, but we’re pretty good together. And that’s something to celebrate. After three years without a MINI community gathering, I’m looking very forward to connecting with MINI fans in Kelowna in late August.” MINI United will take place at Tantalus Vineyards, where sustainability is taken into consideration in every aspect of operation. From good land stewardship to the health of the vineyard’s business – and, by extension, the

health of the local community – Tantalus has a long-held commitment to making wines of the highest quality in the most responsible way they know. This commitment suits MINI very well. With an eye on the future, MINI offers funto-drive models with a small footprint. The brand currently offers two plug-in models – the all-electric MINI Cooper SE 3-door and the hybrid electric MINI Cooper SE Countryman. By the early 2030s, MINI will be an all-electric brand. For MINI, sustainability is about far more than the product. It’s about how the product is built, where its materials come from and how they are sourced, the supplier network, end-of-life recyclability and more. MINI is now charting the course for the future on a platform that has the brand taking up today’s challenges in the areas of mobility, energy economy and climate protection and facing up to them with independent solutions for the driving fun of tomorrow. The strategy developed for this action is based on the campaign slogan BIG LOVE. This is what MINI stands for, and why hosting MINI United at a sustainably-focussed Canadian vineyard works. It’s about Big Love; it’s about creative new ways of thinking and about creating a brighter future for us and our planet. In honour of the brand’s twentieth anniversary in Canada, MINI will put both its past and its future

on display in Kelowna. Relaunching as a premium brand through BMW in 2001, MINI arrived in Canada in 2002. The first car to come to this market was an Indi Blue MINI 3 door with Panther Black Leatherette. Its Chromeline Exterior, heated front seats and white roof and mirror caps still bring the inventive spirit and exceptional personalization that only MINI can offer to life. Epically fun to drive and showcasing MINI’s innate ability to make creative use of space, “the 2002,” as it is affectionately known, commemorates the arrival of this beloved marque on Canadian soil. On the modern side of the brand’s history, the MINI Cooper SE 3 door will also be displayed. With its low centre of gravity, powerful electric powertrain, and dynamic handling, the MINI Cooper SE is a true performance car that retains all the fun-to-drive attributes MINI own-
ers have come to know and love wrapped up in a purely-electric package. More details – including the announcement of a very special guest – will come shortly. Meanwhile, MINI United promises to
bring people together in a way that no other event can. Because nobody is like a MINI fan. And no vehicle is like a MINI. If you have a MINI in your family and want to join the reunion, register at MINI. ca/en/discover/mini-united today.

Fraser Valley housing market continues to cool amid slower sales, softer prices SURREY, BC: Overall sales in the Fraser Valley fell for the third straight month as prices for all property types continued to soften, bringing greater balance to the region’s real estate market. In June, the Board processed 1,281 sales on its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®), a decrease of 5.8 per cent compared to May and a 43 per cent decrease compared to June of last year. Sandra Benz, President of the Board, said, “In just two months our market overall has shifted into balance mainly due to a softening of demand for single-family detached homes. “The condo and townhome markets, although they have moderated, they continue to favour sellers as the sales-to-active listings ratios continue to trend higher, however with fewer multiple offer situations compared to previous months, it’s likely that we will see further softening in these property types as we return to pre-COVID work-life routines.” In June, the Board received 3,332 new listings, an increase of 7.2 per cent compared to last year, and a decrease of 8.2 per cent compared to last month. The month ended with a total active inventory of 6,474, a 4.7 per cent increase compared to May, and 18.3 per cent more than June 2021. Baldev Gill, Chief Executive Officer of the Board, added, “With five-year fixed rates at their highest levels in a decade and residential prices, though softening month-over-
Buying or Selling...
month, are still more than 20 per cent higher than a year ago, we expect to see sales continue to decline over the near term. “The combination of higher rates and low inventory will present a barrier to first-time buyers and could result in even slower sales over the coming months and erase price gains from the past 10 months or so.” Across Fraser Valley, in June, the average number of days to sell a single-family detached home was 21 and a townhome was 19 days. Apartments took, on average, 17 days to sell.

Swearing eases pain
A taboo forbids a practice that is deemed unacceptable. Swearing, especially in polite company, is an example. But here’s good news for the foul-mouthed. Swearing can have surprising benefits – including a remarkable effect in reducing pain! Dr. Emma Byrne knows a lot about letting the filth fly. She published “Swearing is Good for You”, a book presenting research that may change the way you behave when you next stub your toe. For the well-mannered, silent fortitude is the response when something hurts. Studies show, however, swearing like a sailor can ease the pain. One study by psychologist Richard Stephens compared the pain tolerance of people holding their hands in ice-cold water. As compared to yelling a neutral word, they endured the freezing temperature for longer and perceived less pain when they let the cuss words rip. There’s also evidence swearing can increase productivity in the workplace by building stronger teams. “From the factory floor to the operating room,” Byrne writes, “scientists have shown that teams who share a vulgar lexicon tend to work more effectively together, feel closer, and be more productive than those who don’t.” Swearing is more about emotions than the use of language. This helps explain why even very young children love to repeat “bad words”, even before they can put sentences together. Toddlers enjoy the potty-mouthed taboo of bathroom humour because they get an emotional rise, not because they want to wax eloquent about the association between “poop” and “your face”. Women get the short end of the straw when dishing out profanities. Byrne cautions women who may wish to try their chances with a flourish of foul-mouthed obscenities. “If it backfires, it’s not just a judgment about a poor choice of tone, it’s still seen as being a reflection on your character in a way that it isn’t for male speakers,” she says. Other researchers have studied the connection between swearing and honesty. In fact, there are many studies demonstrating that people who swear tell fewer lies and are less deceptive. One study concluded that “people regard profanity more as a tool for the expression of their genuine emotions rather than being antisocial and harmful.” Another study found that people who use more profanity were more honest in posts on Facebook about their personal status. Research has shown that people who swear with flair are deemed to be more persuasive in delivering arguments. Interestingly, it is more effective to swear in your mother tongue. This is presumably because profanity is often socially constructed. It’s best not to swear in a foreign language unless you know the culture inside out. Language fluency does seem to have an important role in one’s ability to produce variation in profanity. Dr. Timothy Jay, a psychology professor, conducted an experiment in which people were asked to generate a list of as many words beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet as possible in one minute. Afterwards, the same people were given a minute to list as many swear words as possible. Those who did better in thinking of words in general were also better able to list obscenities.
“People who are good at producing language are good at producing swear words,” Jay explains. “It’s not because they don’t have language — it’s because they have a whole toolbox full of words.” Here’s something simple to try. The next time the lid on a jar of pickles presents too great a challenge, give that lid a twist and some foul language too. Studies have shown people can perform stronger physical feats when they swear out loud.
