in Surrey. This capital investment will support the growth of this program, work toward meeting the demand for physical therapists today and well into the future.” Santa Ono, President and Vice Chancellor of UBC, said: “This new space is an important part of UBC’s commitment to meeting the growing needs of Surrey and the Fraser region. By continuing to expand UBC’s presence in the Fraser, we’re creating new opportunities for students to learn and train locally where they’ll build deep connections with communities. We know learners are more likely to practise where they train, and this space will help encourage more physical therapists to stay and serve families in the region.”

SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Thursday said: “Another sign of Surrey’s prominence is the expansion of UBC’s physical therapy program into Surrey.” He added: “I want to commend UBC and the provincial government for their foresight in bringing this program to Surrey. It will allow students from Surrey and south of the Fraser access to a world class education close to home.” McCallum noted: “With today’s announcement, UBC joins KPU and SFU in offering university programs in Surrey. With our growing population, there is no question that there is ample demand for more post-secondary options within Surrey. I look forward to seeing what is next for UBC in Surrey.”

THE World Sikh Organization of Canada on Saturday called once again on the Government of Canada to recognize its humanitarian duty and immediately evacuate Afghan Sikhs and Hindus to Canada. A terrorist attack on Saturday at Kabul’s Gurdwara Karte Parwan destroyed the complex and resulted in the death of at least one Sikh. Several others are reported to be injured. This is the latest in a long series of attacks targeting the Sikh and Hindu communities of Afghanistan. ISIS-K is suspected to be responsible for the latest suicide terror attack. ISIS-K also claimed responsibility for the March 2020 attack on Gurdwara Guru Har Rai Sahib in Kabul in which 25 Sikhs lost their lives. Over the past year, the Karte Parwan Gurdwara had been vandalized and ransacked by armed criminals and a Gurdwara in Jalalabad was also the target of a bomb attack.
Fewer than 200 Sikhs and Hindus remain in Afghanistan today. (According to Indian media reports on Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of India granted emergency visas to 111 Hindus and Sikhs from the country, hours after the terrorist attack. All 111 people had applied for the visa in September 2021. Only 159 members of the minorities remain in Afghanistan, including three members who do not have any passport.) Since 2016, WSO has been advocating on behalf of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus and asking the Government of Canada to create a special resettlement program. Afghan Sikhs and Hindus have been long-standing targets of extremist groups. Attacks on gurdwaras and places of work have led to the killing of innocent children and adults. The WSO has repeatedly called on the Government of Canada to evacuate Afghan Sikhs and Hindus and create a special resettlement program for the vulnerable minor-
ity group. The Sikh community has committed and is prepared to privately sponsor the evacuation and resettlement if the Government of Canada creates the program, the WSO noted. Less than one year ago, in June 2021, in his testimony before the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, WSO legal counsel Balpreet Singh said, “The question isn’t whether there will be another attack. The question is when the next attack will be. “These are extremely vulnerable individuals who do not have a future in Afghanistan or in India. They’re looking desperately to Canada to save their lives. It’s been frustrating to advocate without real results on their behalf for this long. “The Sikh community is willing and able to pay for all the resettlement costs, and has done so for the small number of Sikh refugee families who have arrived from the
Helmand group. We just need the government to give us the permission to bring them here.” Sadly, no action has been taken to bring Sikhs and Hindus to safety from Afghanistan. WSO President Tejinder Singh Sidhu said: “We need the Government of Canada to step up and bring Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan to safety. The community is not going to accept any more excuses. “This is a question of political will. We have seen the expedited evacuation of vulnerable refugees from Afghanistan and other countries and we believe Afghan Sikhs and Hindus are just as needful and deserving of such an evacuation today. Every day we wait means another day our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan are facing terror and death. “We are willing to do our part by sponsoring the evacuation. We need the Government of Canada to do its part and create the program.”

Whoa, people can’t face reality about racism! VOICE OPINION COLUMN THE VOICE’S June 14 opinion piece “CBC report on McCallum’s feet not being visible on video footage is very interesting” stated: “The disgraceful rowdy demonstration in Surrey City Council recently by a group of old white people supporting the RCMP vividly shows how low this group can stoop and just how desperate they are” has shaken up the “Keep The RCMP in Surrey” group because they just couldn’t face the truth! A white mainstream Surrey newspaper asked me about it as the group has threatened to complain against me to some so-called media council (please do go ahead!) This is what I told that newspaper: “I’m just mentioning facts, that’s what the video showed. If they were brown people I would have written brown people. I don’t hesitate to write whatever it is. I mean when South Asians commit crimes I’m the irst one to put up, ‘South Asian caught.’” “I have no qualms about identifying them as South Asian or Vietnamese or white or whatever. If it’s brown people I would have written that. I don’t hesitate to lash out at South Asians when they kind of misbehave or act like stupid guys.” “I mean, if they’re white, they’re white, if they’re brown they’re brown.” One reader of that newspaper wrote: “I don’t know why everyone has to be identiied by race?! Come on Rattan, think about it!!” WHY? Because that is the REALITY! Please read the stories whose links I have given below. The race issue has been thrust on the non-whites by a SMALL group of white people who can’t face the reality of multiculturalism in British Columbia — or in Canada.
Stuart @stuartd37 tweeted on Monday with the above images: “Hilarious Article. The KTRIS group filing a complaint against media outlet – the same groups who’s Founder (and his wife) have make racial comments against the South Asian community in the past. This group is a bunch of hypocrites.” Why do you think the British Columbian government has been passing laws and taking so many steps to keep racism in check? For example, what about the racist attacks on East Asians during the pandemic? The VOICE has the reputation of having bravely stood up against ALL racism since the 1990s and forced
changes. We do NOT apologize to anyone for that. We will continue to report fearlessly. Some members of the “Keep The RCMP in Surrey” group are the ones who taunted South Asians a couple of years ago as “TAXI DRIVERS” and called a Surrey municipal police force as “NEW DELHI POLICE” at
the Surrey City Hall. (By the way, concerning the rowdy crowd, even the Surrey Now-Leader has condemned it. On Thursday, in its column “Roses and rotten tomatoes,” it said: “Rotten tomatoes to a certain group of people that caused a lot trouble at a council meeting. To be fair, I am not a fan of Doug McCallum. I do not like him any more than you do, but that group needs to ind something else to focus on and move on.”) We are NOT racists and we will NOT tolerate racists — no matter what the colour of their skin. Those who think that racism against South Asians and other visible minorities doesn’t exist or can be ignored should read just two stories on our website voiceonline. com. One from just last month titled “Hostile protestors outside Surrey banquet hall forced Trudeau’s security team to cancel his appearance” states: “Surrey MP Randeep Sarai told the media that the protesters swore and yelled at everyone attending the event. He said South Asian volunteers “were harassed, sworn at, called towel head, rag head, you’re all immigrants.”” The other story from September 2019 titled “Vancouver Sun’s shameless racism opposed by its own staff!” shows how journalists of that newspaper forced their bosses to apologize for some racist articles that were being published.

UTA slams Port of Vancouver for relaunching truck age regulations ‘without meaningful consultation’
THE United Truckers Association said on Tuesday that the Port of Vancouver’s decision to reintroduce the Rolling Truck Age Program (RTAP) “represents impending doom for an institution being crushed by performance metrics.” Set to launch again in September, the costly measures will put extreme financial burden on container truckers amidst the highest rates of inflation and unaffordability in a generation, the UTA added. It is also set to cause more supply chain delays for a port that in 2021 placed 368/370 in the Container Port Performance Index, as ranked by the World Bank Group and S&P Market Intelligence, the UTA noted. UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh said that the Port of Vancouver’s hasty decision comes with a consultation process that “completely betrayed the direction of the Min-
UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh (3rd from left) at a press conference on Tuesday where he announced that there will be a strike vote on July 1. Photo by SUKHWANT DHILLON / AM 600 Sher-E-Punjab Radio ister of Transport Omar Alghabra.” “In February, the federal government forced the Port of Vancouver to delay implementation so that extensive consultation with industry stakeholders could reshape the proposed program,” said Singh.
“Instead, we got a process that did nothing more than rubber-stamp a decision and design that had long been established by the Port of Vancouver. The input from the UTA and other key stakeholders, has been essentially ignored.”
The UTA said that the Port of Vancouver increased its coal export volume by 19% to 38 million metric tonnes in 2021, which represents approximately 79,267,906 metric tonnes of C02 emissions annually. This is the equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from 17,079,795 gas-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year. It added that the approximately 1,700 trucks being unfairly targeted by the RTAP represent less than two per cent of BC’s licensed commercial trucks, who face none of the same punitive emissions standards. The UTA alleged that forcing truckers with fully paid off assets that meet all Canadian and BC standards for commercial operations (in terms of safety, emissions and opacity levels) is punitive against a group that is predominantly South
Asian in origin. Singh said that the UTA’s ongoing calls for Transport Canada to independently study this matter through a working group and with the assistance of scrutiny in the House of Commons pursuant to the Statutory Instruments Act, has been met with complete silence. The lack of oversight over the Port’s unfair and unjustified targeting of container truckers represents gross negligence on the part of the Government of Canada, he added. “We expected the Minister and his government to properly examine this matter with the care and consideration it deserves. Instead, we have seen politics once again trump sound public policy, and the UTA will not stay silent in the months leading up to the Port’s proposed implementation,” Singh warned.

Their investigators helped complete an extensive canvass of Whistler Village which identified many witnesses. Homicide detectives continued to investigate and were supported by the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS) and the RCMP Forensic Lab. On June 22, with assistance from RCMP E Division Major Crime’s integrated surveillance team and support from the Richmond RCMP, IHIT investigators arrested Jhooty. IHIT was further supported by the Surrey RCMP after the arrest. On June 23, a charge of manslaughter was laid by the BC Prosecution Service against Jhooty for his alleged involvement.

Trudeau, Bergen and others on National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism:
attack in Canadian history. In mere moments, Canada would be forever changed by the violence carried out against these innocent passengers.
At the Air India Memorial in Vancouver in Stanley Park’s Ceperley Playground area on June 23. Photo by SUKHWANT DHILLON / AM 600 Sher-E-Punjab Radio
Justin Trudeau “Today, I join all Canadians to pay tribute and remember those we have lost to terrorist attacks. I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends who are without their loved ones, and to everyone living with pain and trauma caused by these senseless acts of violence. “On this day in 1985, 329 innocent people, including 280 Canadians, were killed by a terrorist attack on Air India Flight 182 bound for the United Kingdom from Canada. This remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history. To honour the victims of this tragedy and of terrorist attacks across the world, the government declared June 23 of every year as a National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. “As a country, we cannot become desensitized to violence and we cannot accept it as
normal. Terrorism has no place in this country and the Government of Canada condemns all forms of terrorism. We work with our allies at home and abroad to stop the spread of violent extremism and terrorism, and to strengthen the resilience and inclusiveness of our society against terrorist and violent extremist ideologies. Canada continues to uphold the values of inclusion, respect for diversity, and pluralism – values that are stronger than fear, hatred, and intolerance. “On this day, we also express solidarity with the survivors and those injured in terrorist attacks. The impacts of these incidents are wide-ranging, and we would like to thank the essential service providers who respond to terrorist incidents and are key to providing support for survivors. From security and law
enforcement agencies, diplomats, members of the intelligence community, to health care professionals, prevention practitioners, and civil society organizations, these local engagements are key to help victims and survivors of terrorism, and to foster community resilience. “On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I honour those we have lost to acts of terrorism. As Canadians, we choose compassion over hate and we embrace diversity and equality as we work to build a safer Canada for everyone.” CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Candice Bergen said in a statement: “On June 23, 1985, the 329 people aboard Air India Flight 182, including 280 Canadians, were cruelly murdered in the deadliest terror
Candice Bergen “Today, we remember the victims of this tragedy – including the many family members who had loved ones viciously stolen from them. “In 2005, in the memory of this attack, June 23 was declared National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism. On this day, we mourn for every life that has been cut short by terrorism and re-commit to strengthening our country so that all Canadians can live without fear, in peace and security. “We also renew our commitment to working with our allies to build a world where no one has to live in fear of violence. “Canada will never allow these evil attacks to divide us from one another. Canadians will always stand together as we fiercely defend values of freedom, tolerance and democracy.”
27-year-old man charged for alleged sexual assaults in Burnaby, Vancouver A 27-year-old man, Hayden McCorriston, has been charged in connection to a series of sexual assaults which occurred over a three-day period between March 31 and April 2 in Burnaby and Vancouver. The sexual assaults in Burnaby included five female victims in the Metrotown
area who reported being groped by a stranger. Following his offences in Burnaby, police say McCorriston travelled to Vancouver where he is alleged to have committed several other offences, including two sexual assaults and an indecent act. Investigators from Burnaby RCMP’s High
Risk Offender (HRO) Unit, the Vancouver Police Department and Metro Vancouver Transit Police conducted a coordinated investigation, with Burnaby RCMP HRO taking the lead. Investigators quickly identified McCorriston and learned he had been arrested for an unrelated offence on April 3. The police agencies
cooperatively gathered evidence to gain a full picture of McCorriston’s activities during his three-day spree. On June 7, BC Prosecution Services approved charges against McCorriston which included seven counts of sexual assault, two thefts, one assault and one indecent act. He remains in custody.

New Westminster investigating two incidents of racist graffiti Unit, and these incidents have been shared with this unit. The suspects in the June 17 incident are described as white males, approximately 20-30
THE New Westminster Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying suspects responsible for racist graffiti following two separate incidents. The first incident is believed to have occurred overnight between June 5 and June 6 with the victim reporting he found racist messages scratched into his vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the area of South Dyke Road of the Queensborough neighbourhood. The second incident occurred on June 17 at approximately midnight. A resident called police to say that he was witnessing two suspects spray painting racist graffiti on buildings in the 400-block of East Columbia Street. When police and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service arrived on scene no one matching the suspect description could be located. It was at that time that police found five vehicles had also been spray painted with graffiti. Officers searched the area for CCTV footage and evidence. “When I saw this graffiti I was disgusted with what I was reading,” said Sgt. Justine Thom.
“Racist incidents are taken seriously by the New Westminster Police Department. This investigation is ongoing and we’re asking anyone with information who has not yet spoken to officers to call us.” The New Westminster Police Department has an officer seconded to the Provincial Hate Crime

Surrey lawyer Mohammud Massood Joomratty barred from practising law for 12 years SURREY lawyer Mohammud Massood Joomratty has admitted to professional misconduct and agreed to resign from practising law, beginning July 29, the Law Society of British Columbia announced on Thursday. Joomratty further agreed not to apply for reinstatement with the Law Society or to apply for admission to any other law society or similar entity worldwide for a minimum of 12 years. If he seeks to apply for reinstatement, Joomratty would be required to appear before a credentials committee and satisfy the committee that he is fit to practise law, including in light of his admitted professional misconduct. Joomratty admitted to misappropriating $450,000 of his client’s funds; improperly transferring $370,000 of a client’s funds; failing to independently confirm information about his client provided to Service Canada; acting in conflicts of interest without his client’s consent and without advising and ensuring that the client obtained independent legal counsel; and preparing, signing and sealing a misleading letter to a foreign bank that prompted the bank to release the client’s funds to the lawyer’s Canadian trust account, among other situations of misconduct. In accepting the consent agreement, the Chair of the Law Society’s Discipline Committee considered that the undertaking not to practise law for 12 years falls within the range of sanctions for similar cases, the geographic scope of his undertaking, that Joomratty repaid the funds he misappropriated, that he did not have a prior discipline record, and that the length of the time before he may apply along with the requirement that he would have to satisfy a credentials committee he is fit for reinstatement effectively protects the public. Further information is available in the consent agreement (visit our website voiceonline for the link).

VANCOUVER Police announced on Tuesday that they had arrested the alleged driver in a hit-andrun collision that killed a 24-year-old pedestrian on Sunday night in Kitsilano. “We asked for help to solve this crime, and after receiving significant information from the public, VPD officers identified the suspected driver and arrested him yesterday at his home in Vancouver for the fatal hit-and-run,” said Sgt. Steve Addison. “We also arrested one of the driver’s family members and are investigating whether that person acted as an accomplice after the fatal collision.” The victim was walking close to home around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when he was struck and killed by a vehicle that was allegedly speeding near West 4th Avenue and Arbutus Street. The driver fled, but a number of bystanders stayed behind, attempted to help the victim, and provided valuable information to police. Investigators from VPD’s Patrol Division, Collision Investigation Unit, and Major Crime Section worked throughout Monday to collect evidence, which led them to the suspect’s residence in South Vancouver yesterday afternoon. The alleged driver, 25, and a 63-year-old family member were taken into custody without incident. Charges have not yet been approved and the investigation is ongoing. The victim was from Ireland and their family is headed for Canada.

gest ever strike vote for 33,000 members in the public service. Ballots were counted on Wednesday and an overwhelming 94.6 per cent of voters said they were prepared to strike for a fair collective agreement. “I couldn’t be happier with this strong result,” said Stephanie Smith, President of the BCGEU and chair of the union’s bargaining committee. “But it was the lead-up — the five weeks of intensive organizing, pop-up voting sites and mail-in ballot-collecting — that really forced the public service agency to change its tune.” Between May 16 and June 22, BCGEU members employed with the PSA – with the support of BCGEU staff – embarked on an ambitious member outreach drive to ensure everyone in the bargaining unit could cast their ballot. As the vote wrapped up, their employer suddenly invited BCGEU back to bargaining. Negotiations will

Stephanie Smith resume on Monday, June 27, in Vancouver. “This vote was a massive undertaking, and just by participating in it, our members clearly made waves,” said Smith. “The voting results drove their point home and sent a strong message to the employer that their staff stand behind their demands, including cost of living protection for wages. We’ll see how well the employer was listening when we return to bargaining next week.” The BCGEU noted that as inflation continues to skyrocket – reaching 8.1 per cent in B.C. on Wednesday – it erodes workers’ spending power. Cost of living protections for wages has become a key issue for all workers, including the public service. Members of their bargaining unit are employees of direct government, including wildfire fighters, social workers, sheriffs and correctional officers, administrative staff, employees in BC Liquor and Cannabis stores and warehouses, as well as conservation officers, employees who do field and lab work in the realm of environmental monitoring, and more. From the moment bargaining for their collective agreement began, members said that COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustment) was a must for the province to continue recruiting and retaining the qualified staff needed to keep our province running. “Our province was in an affordability crisis before the pandemic and before inflation started to skyrocket last year,” said Smith. “Any wage offer that doesn’t include COLA protection is a wage cut, and no worker should have to accept a pay cut.” The BCGEU noted that the public service strike vote sends a message of solidarity to hundreds of thousands of other public sector workers who are, or soon will be, in bargaining including staff at addiction treatment centres, group homes, community health, seniors’ care, homes for persons with developmental disabilities, and more. “A win for the BCGEU’s public service members is a win for every public sector worker in B.C.,” Smith said. “This vote will empower all of them to fight for COLA language.” Smith added that she is hopeful the PSA’s decision to resume negotiations means they’re prepared to table a serious offer. “Our goal has always been to get a deal at the bargaining table. But if the employer is not fair and reasonable, members are prepared to action their strike vote in the future,” she said. The BCGEU is the first of many public sector unions to bargain with the government in 2022. In total, almost 400,000 public sector workers have agreements that will, or already have, expire this year.
Shots fired at Vancouver house VANCOUVER Police tweeted on Tuesday that they were “investigating overnight reports of shots fired at a house near Renfrew Street and 4th Avenue in East Vancouver.” Police added that no victim was located and the motive was unknown.

Here comes the first hot stretch of summer! [ Letter to the Editor by Kiranvir Randhawa: The heat dome affected me, my loved ones, my neighbours and my community in a multitude of ways. Seeing how much destruction was caused by this event is extremely concerning. It highlights the uncertainties that we are facing due to the affects of climate change. Our most vulnerable members of the Surrey community are facing tremendous challenges along with all of the additional problems created by the heat dome. I truly hope that our leaders step up to the plate and address the risks we are facing and find concrete solutions to help those who are most at risk.] BRITISH Columbians should take precautions this weekend, as Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the first hot stretch of the summer for most regions in B.C., warns the Province. The warmer-than-average temperatures are expected to begin Friday, June 24, and last through Tuesday, June 28.
Daytime temperatures are expected to rise into the low to mid-30s in the Interior, low 30s in the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky, and high 20s on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. Overnight temperatures are expected to lower down to the low-to-mid teens. (All temperatures in Celsius). While a heat warning is not in the forecast, the warmer-than-average temperatures may feel intensified in comparison to the cooler-thannormal temperatures experienced throughout B.C. over the past month. It is important that people keep themselves and others safe during warmer than average temperatures, advises the Province. The Province released an Extreme Heat Preparedness Guide earlier in June to help people prepare for extreme heat and share tips on how to stay safe when temperatures rise. The guide is available in French, Punjabi, traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese. A return of summer conditions is a good time to prepare a heat plan, including identifying cool zones inside and outside of homes
(community centres, libraries, etc.), knowing ways to cool down, such as taking cool baths or showers and drinking plenty of water, and identifying vulnerable family members and neighbours who are susceptible to heat who should be checked on. Health authorities are working with care homes to ensure heat plans are in place, as well as community health workers to ensure vulnerable clients are supported. Local authorities and First Nations are prepared to activate their heat plans this summer, which may include setting up cooling centres, distributing bottled water and conducting wellness checks. With elevated temperatures, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases. Heat illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat fainting, heat edema (swelling of hands, feet and ankles), heat rash and heat cramps (muscle cramps). Watch for symptoms of heat illness, including dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, confusion, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, extreme thirst, and decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.
If someone experiences any of these symptoms during extreme heat, they should immediately move to a cool place, start cooling down and drink liquids. If symptoms are not mild, last longer than one hour, change, worsen or cause concern, they should contact a health-care provider. Although heat is expected, bodies of water remain cool for this time of year and may pose a risk of hypothermia to people when they are exposed to cold water for a prolonged period of time. The Province recently announced an extreme heat funding stream for First Nations and local governments under the $189-million Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for extreme heat-risk mapping, assessment and planning. Royal BC Museum plan stopped, public will be consulted on museum’s future Public engagement will seek input on what British Columbians want to see in a modernized museum experience. It will also address structural and safety issues identified with the current buildings. The structure, timeline and scope of the public engagement will be determined by the museum board with a view to connecting with the broadest possible range of British Columbians, including First Nations, business groups, members of the public and other stakeholders. Construction of a new Collections and Research Building in Colwood will continue. Once it is complete, museum artifacts will be safely relocated there. BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon tweeted: “I was clear from day one that this billiondollar vanity museum project should be scrapped. I’m pleased to see the NDP pause today, but the fact that John Horgan still opposes a renovation and won’t rule out the same $1B plan later should concern us all.” He also noted: “The NDP spent weeks ag-

THE Province is halting plans announced last month to rebuild the Royal British Columbia Museum. The museum will remain open to visitors. The Royal BC Museum will now lead a broad public engagement to consider all options for the future of the museum. “I always try to act in the best interests of British Columbians,” said Premier John Horgan on Wednesday. “That involves listening. That also means taking responsibility when you make the wrong call. Over the past few weeks, we listened to British Columbians who have made it clear they want the Royal BC Museum to remain open while we rethink our long-term plans to protect its priceless artifacts. That is exactly what we are going to do.” Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, said: “Museum leadership will undertake a broad public engagement to determine our next steps. At the end of the day, this museum belongs to the people of British Columbia, and their voices will determine its future.”

More than 100 Surrey intersections now equipped with pedestrian-first signals
THE City of Surrey says that pedestrian crashes account for roughly 35% of all traffic fatalities and serious injuries, which is why it is working hard to improve traffic safety for these vulnerable road users. The City recently hit a milestone, activating its 100th Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) signal, which activates the walk sign prior to the traffic light. By doing this, pedestrians get a head start into the crosswalk to help drivers making turns see them better and reduce crashes. “We know people make mistakes, so designing our roads and improving their operations to
help reduce crash risk makes sense,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Using our state-ofthe-art Traffic Management Centre, the City has implemented Leading Pedestrian Interval signals because we know they work, are low cost and improve safety. “We will continue to roll LPIs out throughout the City at appropriate intersections. This initiative is just one of many low-cost, high-benefits safety measures in Surrey’s Vision Zero Safe Mobility Plan, which takes a data-driven, best practice approach to road safety. No one should have to grieve the loss of a loved one as the result of our
mobility.” Leading Pedestrian Intervals have been shown to reduce vehicle-pedestrian collisions by approximately 60%. That’s why these signal timing changes are actively implemented as part of the City’s Vision Zero Surrey Safe Mobility Plan. The plan prioritizes the most vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, and the rapid implementation of LPIs has supported the decline in collisions that kill or injure those walking in our community This work aligns with the Surrey Transportation Plan Bold Moves to Put Safety First.
In 2019, the City had LPIs at roughly 70 intersections. Initially, the LPI timing was set at 4 seconds, but through analysis by engineers and Traffic Management Centre staff that monitor the City’s over 500 intersection cameras, the timing was increased to 7 seconds. Increasing the timing helps improve safety outcomes for pedestrians by reducing pedestrian-vehicle conflicts. Surrey’s approach to its LPI system is preventative and proactive, as opposed to reactive based on collisions, and the City has been contacted by numerous municipalities across Canada for advice on LPI implementation.

Approved 30-year Broadway Plan integrates housing, jobs and amenities with subway NEIGHBOURHOODS along Broadway have a new roadmap for the future after Vancouver City Council approved the Broadway Plan on Wednesday night, providing a 30-year framework that will integrate new housing, job space and amenities with the Broadway Subway. “The Broadway Plan is an important opportunity for our city to leverage the significant investments in the Broadway Subway that improves transit access to the rest of the city and the region,” said Theresa O’Donnell, General Manger of Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability. “It’s a plan that will work to meet the needs of today’s residents and generations in the future by adding much-needed housing for all incomes, especially renters. This plan will create more job space near transit to support our growing economy and will make it easier to live, work, and get around in lively, diverse neighbourhoods.” The City said the Broadway Plan helps Vancouver address some of the biggest challenges – the housing crisis, economic growth and the climate emergency. The Plan will shift more new development to rentals, including secured and non-market rental homes, and will add housing with easy access to transit, jobs, and amenities. With an emphasis on walkable, complete neighbourhoods, the Plan supports Vancouver’s Climate Emergency Action Plan
target of ensuring 90 per cent of people can live within an easy walk or roll of their daily needs by 2030. Over the next 30 years, key goals of the Broadway Plan include: * Adding up to 30,000 additional homes for all income levels. Approximately 46% of these new homes will be market rental; 12% will be social housing; 7% will be below-market rentals, and 34% will be market strata. * The City’s strongest renter protections ever to help tenants stay in their neighbourhoods at affordable rents, including the right of first refusal for existing tenants to return to redeveloped buildings with new homes that are an appropriate size for their household, and at their current rent or a 20% discount on city-wide average market rents, whichever is less. * Strengthening Central Broadway’s role as an employment centre with new space for up to 42,000 jobs. * Supporting reconciliation through housing, heritage, public realm and sustainable water management initiatives. * Preserving and enhancing the shopping village areas on West 4th Avenue, South Granville and Main Street. * Transforming Broadway into a Great Street, which provides improved walking and rolling routes and enjoyable public
spaces, including a commitment to build a AAA (all ages and abilities) safe active transportation lane along Broadway to increase safety and livability. * Providing over $1 billion of public benefits in Mount Pleasant, Fairview and Kitsilano over the first 10 years of the plan: - Delivering $96 million for new or enhanced parks - Securing 400 new or renewed childcare spaces - Renewing and expanding the Firehall Li-
brary and Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House - Preserving and renewing arts, cultural and music spaces * Creating Vancouver’s first area-wide blue green system with a network of connected park-like streets that manage water and protect the ecosystem. * Continuing to protect public mountain views in key locations throughout the area. McCallum says Safe Surrey Coalition will protect giant coastal sequoia tree
SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Monday said that he has heard the public loud and clear and will ensure that a majestic redwood tree at 133 Street and 104 Avenue will be protected. In a statement, McCallum said: “Safe Surrey Coalition has received over 10,000 signatures to protect a huge coastal sequoia tree in the City Centre from development. “Since 2013, a contentious public debate has ensued regarding a giant coastal redwood tree located on 133 Street and 104 Avenue which has been slated to be torn down by a developer for a development proposal.
“During our term, Safe Surrey Coalition has made it a priority to protect our urban canopy and has been taking strong action to fight climate change. I have heard the public loud and clear and when this proposal appears before Council, I will ensure that this development proposal will not move forward unless the developer guarantees that this majestic redwood tree will be saved. “Surrey has been recognized by the United Nations as a tree city and caring for our urban forest is a vital step to fighting climate change and achieving our vision of being a thriving, green and inclusive City for future generations.”

Surrey Mayor pledges to protect vital piece of farmland SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday pledged to protect a vital piece of farmland that has been in the news because the federally owned land could be converted for industrial use. McCallum said in a statement: “Surrey is home is to an abundance of rich farmland. The fertile land in question at 192nd Street
and 36th Avenue is a vital piece of farmland that should remain untouched. “If the federal government were to make this property available to the City of Surrey, I would ensure an offer would be made. If successful, I would pledge that the property would remain as farmland so it can produce harvest after harvest for generations to come.”

Applications being accepted for $10-a-day child care APPLICATIONS are being accepted from child care providers to join the $10-a-day ChildCareBC program this year, which will enable them to offer low-cost child care. Spaces in the $10-a-day ChildCareBC program reduce the average cost of child care from $1,000 a month (for full-time, centrebased infant care) at facilities participating in the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative (CCFRI) to $200 a month, saving families an average of about $800 a month per child. By partnering with the Government of Canada through the 2021-2022 to 2025-2026 Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement (CWELCC), this application opening will support the expansion of $10-a-day child care spaces from more than 6,500 to 12,500 by December 2022. Applications will now be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis, based on priority criteria, allowing some sites to offer $10-aday spaces sooner than December 2022. Applications are available as of noon, June 20, and can be submitted until noon, August 18. All types of child care providers offering services to children five and younger are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to larger non-profit, publicly delivered and Indigenous-led providers in communities that do not have a $10-a-day site, and based on population density, which aligns with commitments in the CW-ELCC. This expansion of the $10-a-day program is part of B.C.’s commitment in partnership with the federal government that, by the end of 2022, average child care fees for B.C. families with children five and younger will be reduced by half of what average out-of-pocket fees were for families in 2019. To support the goal of ensuring access to high-quality, affordable and inclusive early learning and child care, the Government of Canada is contributing $3.2 billion for child care in British Columbia over five years through the CW-ELCC. This is in addition to more than $323 million provided through the 2021-2022 to 2024-2025 Canada-British Columbia Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. The Province said that since 2018 it has invested $2.7 billion in the 10-year ChildCareBC plan to build a future where affordable, inclusive and quality child care is a core service that families can rely on. Quick Facts * An average of 30,500 children received support through the Province’s Affordable Child Care Benefit each month in 2021-22.
Armed robbery of New Westminster convenience store THE New Westminster Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in an armed robbery of a convenience store on 12th Street. The robbery occurred on June 16 at approximately 4:30 a.m. The victim who was working at the convenience store called police after a suspect entered the store, brandished a firearm and made threats to harm the victim if he did not comply and hand over cash. The suspect fled north up 12th Street into Burnaby. “This is extremely concerning for police and we’re asking the public to help us in identifying a suspect,” said Sgt. Justine Thom. “If you were driving in the area and have dash cam footage, or the suspect description sounds familiar to you, police are interested in hearing from you.” The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 35-40 years old, 5’7” tall with a medium build. The suspect was last seen wearing a cream-coloured sweater, a cream-coloured baseball hat, and was wearing a cream-coloured balaclava which covered his entire face but his eyes.
* Families making less than $45,000 can receive the maximum funding amount and those making as much as $111,000 can receive partial funding. * In 2021-22, fee reductions were approved for more than 69,000 child care spaces at more than 3,600 child care facilities in B.C. through the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative (CCFRI). * Combined, the 2022 expansion of the $10 a day program and additional fee reductions for families through CCFRI will help the Province meet its commitments under the CWELCC, to reduce average child care fees for children five and younger by half of the average provincial fee in 2019. * More details about the fee reductions through CCFRI will be available for child care providers and families in the coming months.
For more information on existing $10-a-day ChildCareBC sites and spaces, criteria, guide-

Chandigarh (IANS): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sensational killing of famed Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala on Thursday said that jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, the alleged main conspirator, confessed that the execution planning was hatched in August last year to avenge the murder of youth Akali leader Vicky Middukhera. Anti-Gangster Task Force chief, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Pramod Ban, told the media here that 13 people have been arrested so far in the case with the first arrest on May 30, a day after Moose Wala’s murder. A Canada-based gangster, who is a member of Bishnoi gang, had claimed the responsibility of the murder. Ban said the shooters reached Mansa on May 25, the scene of crime close to Moosa village. “Some of the weapons were provided to them on reaching Punjab,” he added. AK series assault rifles were used in the killing, he said. “Today we have arrested Baldev, a.k.a. Nikku, who accompanied Kekda (Sandeep Singh) in conducting recce for the crime. So far, 13 people have been arrested,” Ban said. Nikku along with Kekda conducted recce of the area, followed Moose Wala and gave the signal to the waiting shooters, besides calling the Canada-based gangster and Sachin Bishnoi to give them real-time updates about the movements of the slain singer. He said Bishnoi, who was brought to Punjab by the state police from Delhi last week for questioning, had during interrogation revealed that the planning for the murder
Sidhu Moose Wala with his mother. started last year. “He has confessed to hatching the conspiracy with [the Canada-based gangster], Sachin Bishnoi (Thapan) and his younger brother Anmol. At least three recce were done prior to the murder. In January, another group of shooters had visited the Moose Wala’s place.” Ban said the motive behind the killing, as admitted by Bishnoi, was to avenge Middukhera’s murder. “As per our investigation, Moose Wala’s hand in Middukhera’s killing was not established. There was an assumption by the Lawrence gang about the role of Moose Wala in his killing,” he added. He said the police have got details of associates, weapons suppliers, financers and others helping the gang in various activities and “different district police have arrested 19 persons, who are linked with this gang.” He said Bishnoi, in a well hatched-out conspiracy, to protect his brother Anmol and his close associate Sachin Thapan and himself had created a perfect alibi so that he and his associates would
not be linked to the crime. “To execute this plan, he procured passports for his brother Anmol Bishnoi and Sachn Thapan on fake particulars that were issued by the Regional Passport Office (RPO), Delhi, and made them flee the country before the execution of this murder,” the ADGP said. He settled them abroad from
where they could coordinate, facilitate and successfully execute this crime without being noticed or held culpable. Anmol Bishnoi has a criminal past with 18 criminal cases registered against him. He was last in Jodhpur jail from where he was released on bail on October 7, 2021. Sachin Thapan also had a criminal past with 12 criminal cases. Based on disclosures made by Bishnoi during the interrogation, a separate case dated June 20 was registered against Bishnoi and his associates. “A deeper probe shall be conducted to unearth the modus operandi and the role of the officials in this nexus in which the persons with criminal background manage to procure passports on fake particulars from the RPO Delhi and flee the country,” said Ban, adding “we have started proceedings for their extradition.”

BJP’s attempt to topple Maharashtra government unethical: Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata/Guwahati/Mumbai: Amid the ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has flayed the BJP for trying to “topple” the MVA (Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi) government in that state in an “unethical and unconstitutional” manner. She said the saffron party has deliberately chosen to “disturb” the Maharashtra government at a time when the Presidential polls are approaching. “It’s an unfortunate fact that the federal structure has been totally demolished by the BJP-led central government. They are attempting to topple the Maharashtra government in an unethical and unconstitutional manner,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat. Describing the situation in Maharashtra as “shocking”, the Trinamool Congress chief said,

“We want justice for people, for the electoral mandate and for (Maharashtra Chief Minister and Siv Sena party chief) Uddhav Thackeray.” In what seems to be an apparent bid to topple the MVA government in Maharashtra, dissident legislators of Shiv Sena, which heads the ruling coalition, left for Surat on June 21, where they had camped for the day, before flying to Guwahati in a chartered aircraft. This is perhaps the first time MLAs from a western state were flown to a northeastern state, following their rebellion against the party leadership. The exact number of rebel legislators that moved to Guwahati could not be confirmed, but the flight reportedly carried 89 passengers, including the crew. The TMC supremo asked the BJP to send the MLAs to Bengal instead, where they will be

Send them (the MLAs) to Bengal and we will extend good hospitality and take care of democracy, too,” she said. Shiv Sena’s second-in-command Eknath Shinde’s revolt against Thackeray on Thursday turned into a battle for control of the party. In an emotional address on Facebook, Thackeray said he was willing to resign as the Chief Minister and from the party’s top leadership position if instructed by his party workers. However, he needed an assurance that the next Chief Minister would be a ‘Shiv Sainik’. Thackeray added that it wasn’t the allies in the state government asking him to quit, but his own ‘Shiv Sainikis’. “I am ready to resign. But come and meet me face-to-face. Tell me that I should quit to my face and I will resign,” he stated in his address. The incumbent Chief Minister, later in the evening, exited the Chief Minister’s official residence in south Mumbai to his family house, Matoshri in suburban Bandra. Sena workers lined up on the road to Matorshri as a show of strength. Meanwhile, Shinde tweeting with the hashtag HinduForever, said the party must
consider quitting the “unnatural alliance” with ideologically-opposed parties, for its own survival and that of the Shiv Sainikis. He argued that in the last two and a half years, the constituent parties of the ruling alliance were getting stronger whilst Shiv Sainikis were getting overwhelmed. The rebel group stated there was dissatisfaction in the party owing to corruption and misadministration fostered by former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and sitting minority affairs minister Nawab Malik (allegedly involved with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim) – both in jail.

ED asks Sonia Gandhi to depose late July New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to record her statement with the agency sometime in late July after it accepted her plea to postpone her deposition in a money-laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper, officials said on June 23. She was issued a second summons for June
23 by the agency but the 75-year-old Congress leader could not keep the date as she “has been strictly advised to rest at home following her hospitalisation on account of COVID and lung infection”. Sources said the federal agency has postponed her questioning in the case for about four weeks and she has now been asked to depose sometime in the last week of July.

BJP chooses Draupadi Murmu, India’s first tribal woman governor, as its presidential candidate Ranchi/New Delhi (IANS): The BJP on Tuesday chose former Jharkhand governor and tribal leader Draupadi Murmu as its candidate for the post of President of India against opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha for the July 18 election. Murmu, who hails from Odisha, becomes the first woman tribal leader to contest for the country’s highest constitutional post. She was also the first tribal woman governor in the country. BJP chief J.P. Nadda announced Murmu’s name during a press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi. The decision was taken by the BJP Parliamentary Board, the party’s top decision-making body. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, Nadda and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were present at the meeting. Announcing Murmu’s name, Nadda said that the BJP is trying to build a consensus among all the parties. “After opposition parties announced their candidate, the BJP, after talking to all the NDA allies, decided to field Murmu as its Presidential candidate. Detailed discussions were held on 20 names and a consensus was built that someone from the East and from the tribal commu-
Kabul: Pakistan and Iran have sent aid supplies to Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 6.1-magnitude quake that killed at least 1,000 people in the war-torn nation’s Paktika province. Doctors in Afghanistan say that many children may have been killed in Wednesday’s earthquake. More than 1,000 people died in the disaster, and heavy rain, threadbare resources and rugged terrain are hampering rescue workers. Unknown numbers were buried in the rubble of ruined, often mud-built homes. By Wednesday night Taliban officials said search and rescue operations had finished in most places, although in remoter areas some continued still. “We can’t reach the area - networks are too weak,” a Taliban spokesman
Draupadi Murmu nity must be made the President of India. After discussions, the Parliamentary board decided to name Draupadi Murmu as the Presidential candidate,” Nadda said. Earlier on Tuesday, the opposition parties announced former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as their consensus candidate for the post of President. “We (opposition parties) have unanimously decided that Yashwant Sinha will be our common candidate for the Presidential election,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told mediapersons soon after the meeting of opposition parties held at the Parliament Annexe. Murmu’s tenure as the governor of Jharkhand for more than six years was not only non-controversial, but also memorable. After the com-
pletion of her tenure, she left the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan for her village in Odisha’s Rairangpur on July 12, 2021, and has been living there since then. Harinarayan Singh, editor-in-chief of a Hindi daily published from Ranchi, said that the name of Murmu for the post of President was also discussed in 2017. Murmu has a rich experience of more than six years as a governor. The BJP, with her candidature, is trying to give a symbolic message to the whole of country in many ways. Her selection for the top post can also be a part of the BJP’s strategy to make inroads into the tribal society, which has been a bastion of the Congress so far. The BJP is eyeing upcoming state assembly elections, and tribals are its main focus area in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where their votes are crucial for the party’s scheme of things. Murmu had served twice as an MLA and once as a minister in Odisha, before being sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015. Her five-year term as governor was to end on May 18, 2020, but was automatically extended due to non-appointment of a new governor because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. She was always aware of the issues related to tribal affairs, education, law and order, and health in Jharkhand. On several occasions, she
questioned decisions of the state governments, but always with constitutional dignity and decency. During her tenure as the ex-officio Chancellor of the Universities, the vacant posts of Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor were appointed in many universities of the state. Senior Professor at Vinoba Bhave University Dr Shailesh Chandra Sharma recalls that she herself organized Lok Adalats on issues related to higher education in the state, in which about 5,000 cases of university teachers and employees were settled. In order to centralize the enrollment process in the universities and colleges of the state, she created the Chancellor’s portal. Born on June 20, 1958, in Odisha in a simple Santhal tribal family, Murmu started her political career in 1997. She was elected councillor of the district board in Rairangpur in 1997. Prior to joining politics, Murmu worked as an honorary assistant teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research, Rairangpur, and as a junior assistant in the Irrigation Department before joining politics. She was MLA twice in Odisha and also got a chance to work as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik government, when the BJP was in a coalition with the Biju Janata Dal. Murmu was also awarded the Neelkanth Award for Best Legislator by the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

were also injured, officials say. The Taliban authorities have called for more international aid. Most of the casualties found so far have been in the Gayan and Barmal districts of Paktika. Locals report dozens of villages collapsed. The deadliest earthquake to strike the country in two decades is a major challenge for the Taliban. The earthquake struck early on Wednesday about 44km (27 miles) from the city of Khost and tremors were felt as far away as Pakistan and India. Afghanistan is in the midst of a humanitarian and economic crisis, and Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a senior Taliban official, said the government was “financially unable to assist the people to the extent that is needed”.
The head of the UN, António Guterres said the agency had “fully mobilised” over the disaster. But Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, head of information for Paktika province, told the media it was proving “very difficult” for rescuers to reach areas “affected by floods because of heavy rains last night”. Afghanistan is prone to quakes, as it is located in a tectonically active region, over a number of fault lines including the Chaman fault, the Hari Rud fault, the Central Badakhshan fault and the Darvaz fault. Over the past decade more than 7,000 people have been killed in earthquakes in the country, the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports. There are an average of 560 deaths a year from earthquakes.

Initially, a case in this regard was lodged with Madhuban police station of Karnal and the probe was taken over by the NIA in May. The NIA learnt during the investigation that Pakistan based operative of BKI (Babar Khalsa Internation-

Two of six men who allegedly gunned down Moose Wala held from Gujarat
– The main shooter was in direct touch with a Canada-based gangster at the time of the incident
– Assailants would have used grenades to kill the singer in case the guns didn’t work New Delhi (IANS): In a major breakthrough, the Special Cell of Delhi Police said on Monday that it has arrested three persons — two main shooters and their facilitator — who were involved in the brutal killing of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala. The two accused shooters, identified as Priyavrat alias Fauji (26), a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, and Kashish alias Kuldeep (24), a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, were arrested from Kutch district in Gujarat on Sunday. Addressing the media here on Monday, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), H.S. Dhaliwal, said that Priyavrat was the head of the module of gangsters who led the team of shooters. He was in direct touch with a Canadabased gangster at the time of the incident. “He was the main shooter and executioner of the murder who could be seen in the CCTV footage of a petrol pump in Fatehgarh just before the incident,” Dhaliwal said. Priyavrat was previously involved in two murder cases and was ar-

The third person who was arrested has been identified as Keshav Kumar (29), a resident of Bhatinda, Punjab. “He acted as a facilitator and received the shooters just after the shootout in an Alto car,” Dhaliwal said. Keshav accompanied the shooters till Mansa on the day of incident, during reconnaissance and also during the previous attempts. Apart from arresting the two accused shooters, the police have also recovered a large cache of arms and explosives. Dhaliwal said the Bolero car in
Chandigarh (IANS): Amidst the opposition heat over deteriorating law and order situation and the killing of famed singer Sidhu Moosewala, casting of votes for the bypoll of the Sangrur parliamentary constituency in the AAP-ruled Punjab took place on Thursday. Reports said there was a poor turnout compared to the Assembly elections earlier this year when all nine segments of Sangrur witnessed more than 70 per cent polling, The counting of ballots will take place on
which four of the assailants came was being driven by Kashish, who was accompanied by Priyavrat, Ankit Sirsa and Deepak Mundi. The second car was being driven by Jagroop Roopa and had another assailant named Manpreet Mannu in it. “A person named Sandeep Kekda gave the initial intimation about Moose Wala’s movement without security following which the assailants got the final go-ahead to execute the murder,” the officer said. The car in which Jagroop Roopa and Manpreet Mannu were travelling first overtook Moosewala’s car and abruptly stopped in front of it. “Manpreet Mannu first came out of the car and started firing indiscriminately with his AK-47 rifle,
injuring Moosewala who couldn’t drive his car further,” Dhaliwal said. The other four assailants in the Bolero car — Priyavrat, Kashish, Ankit Sirsa and Deepak Mundi — also reached the spot at the same time. “All the four assailants stepped out of the car and shot at Moosewala multiple times,” the officer said. After committing the murder, Jagroop Roopa and Manpreet Mannu fled the spot in their Corolla car while the other four assailants escaped in their Bolero car. Some distance ahead, the assailants in the Bolero car met Keshav Kumar who transported them to Fatehabad. The assailants stayed in Fatehabad for a few days before heading for multiple locations. Dhaliwal also made the startling revelation that the assailants would have used grenades to kill the singer in case the guns didn’t work. “The shooters had kept grenades as a back-up plan in case the guns didn’t work,” he said. Priyavrat, Kashish and Keshav were arrested from Baroi village in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Sunday. “A team of Special Cell was deployed, and all the three accused were arrested in a swift operation,” Dhaliwal said. On the instance of module head Priyavrat, the police found a huge cache of arms and ammunition hidden in a village in Haryana. “We recovered eight grenades
Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll sees poor turnout June 26. A total of 1,569,240 voters will be exercising their franchise at 1,766 polling booths of which 296 are vulnerable. The bypoll for AAP-stronghold Sangrur was necessitated following the resignation of Bhagwant Mann, who won the Assembly election in February from Dhuri constituency, and became the Chief Minister. The AAP has fielded Mann’s confidant Gurmail Singh, 38, while death row convict Bal-
want Singh Rajoana’s foster sister Kamaldeep Kaur, 44, is in the fray on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ticket. The other key contenders are BJP’s Kewal Dhillon, 72, and Dalvir Singh Goldy, 40, of the Congress. Both are former legislators. Mann had won his first election as Sangrur MP in 2014 with a record margin of over 210,000 votes defeating SAD candidate Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. In 2019 Mann was the lone AAP MP in Parlia-

along with an under barrel grenade launcher. The high explosive grenades are designed for use with grenade launchers. The grenade launcher can be mounted on AK-47 assault rifles,” Dhaliwal said. Apart from grenades, the police also found nine electric detonators, one assault rifle along with 20 rounds, three sophisticated star pistols of .30 bore, 36 rounds of 7.62 mm star pistols and parts of AK series assault rifle. Moose Wala, 28, was shot dead on May 29 while he was travelling in a car near his village in Punjab’s Mansa district. Eight assailants fired over 30 shots at him in Jawaharke village in Mansa district. Sidhu was found soaked in blood on the driving seat of a Mahindra Thar SUV while two other occupants of the car — Gurwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh — also received bullet injuries. The motive behind Moose Wala’s killing is still unclear and even the Delhi Police refrained from divulging any further details, saying that their duty is to stop organized crime. “It is a mandate of the Special Cell to stop organized crime and check if there is any terror [involved] it. Whenever a big crime takes place anywhere in the country, we proactively start probing it so as to prevent a similar kind of incident that might occur in the national capital,” Dhaliwal said.
ment and he had defeated the then Congress candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon by more than 110,000 votes. In the 2022 Assembly elections, AAP recorded a thumping win by claiming 92 of the Assembly’s 117 seats. The ruling Congress won 18, down from 77 in 2017. Interestingly, all nine Vidhan Sabha constituencies coming under Sangrur parliamentary seat were won by AAP MLAs with a record mandate.

2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line. Game Changing Electric SUV!
Review By Veeno Dewan.
Right from the start, the new 2022 Kia EV6 is a striking, beautiful looking all-electric (EV) SUV. Highlights include its swoopy futuristic design and proportions capped with a flowing floating roof, and a rear end with a double-arcing two-colour taillight feature design. It sits low adding to its dramatic silhouette combined with the long roofline and a tapering rising beltline. As expected, flushdoor handles are as standard Its a knockout styling wise and well -priced. This new electric crossover will come in three trim levels — the EV6, EV6 GT-line and the topline EV6 GT. The 2WD GT-line as tested is fitted with the long-range battery pack. It delivers over 510 of electric driving range. The reardrive models with the 77.4-kWh battery run with a 229-horsepower electric motor, and for allwheel-drive models, two electric motors making a combined 325 horsepower drive the front and rear wheels. Maximum available torque with AWD is 446 lb-ft, and these models can do the 0- 100
km/h dash in a quick 5.2 seconds. The smaller 58.0-kWh battery pack pairs with a 168-hp motor powering the rear wheels. Note that Canadian buyers will also benefit from a heat pump system for maintaining range during cold winter conditions. The EV6 starts at $44,995 for the base Standard Range RWD version, with prices increasing to $52,995 for the Long Range RWD, $54,995 -$57,995 for the Long Range AWD. Models with
the Long Range AWD with the GT-Line Package 1 or 2 end at $61,995. Buyers of the EV6 or EV GT-Line will be able to pick from a standard range 58kWh battery pack or opt for the long range 77.4kWh battery pack configuration. The Kia EV6 has game changing charging times as well with its ultra fast 800-volt architecture, which enables battery packs to accept more power more quickly than lower-voltage systems. This results in lower charging times when using a DCFC. Kia says the EV6 will go from a 10-percent charge level to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. The Kia EV6 cabin does not disappoint. The front seating position is good with a decent step in height making ingress and exit easy. The front dash is dominated by crystal- clear twin 12.3-inch instrument displays which are easy to use and navigate. Also available is an augmented-reality HUD. There’s a floating centre console with open storage underneath. The EV6 does its part for the environment offering zero-gravity seats trimmed in either a mate-
rial made from recycled plastic bottles, vegan leather, or flaxseed oil-tanned leather. The seat and interior occupant room is good front and rear and there is a high level of fit and finish. The EV6 is a versatile vehicle with plenty of room for five passengers. Cargo space behind the second row is 520 litres, expanding to 1,300 litres with the seat folded. There’s also a front trunk. The EV6 will tow up to 1,600 kg. Also impressive is the Available Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology that turns the EV6 into a direct power source for everything from personal electronics, appliances, and even another EV. Technology levels are excellent with some novel features. The KIA Connect infotainment known as UVO also allows EV6 owners to use Apple and Android smartwatches to view battery status and vehicle notifications, and smart speaker integration lets owners use their Alexa or Google Assistant to control some vehicle functions like climate control before entering the vehicle. The WiFi hotspot enables the use of personal devices in the vehicle and over-the-air updates to map and
infotainment systems. There is newly enhanced voice assistance which enables voice control for climate control, seat heating, radio, and other features. A cool “find my car” app is also available. On the advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) front, the Kia EV6 offers cutting edge functions like navigation-based adaptive cruise control. The system uses information provided by the nav system to lower the vehicle’s speed before entering curves and keeps it centered. Other driver aids include Active blind-spot warning, automatic emergency stop assistance, and rear crosstraffic collision-avoidance assist. These systems use automatic braking to prevent or mitigate accidents. On the road, the Kia delivers excellent straight-line performance and roadholding aided by a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension. Drivers gain incredible smoothness, stability, and breakout acceleration. The dualmotor eAWD versions of the EV6 also offer four differentiated, driver-selectable driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow. Various levels of regenerative braking are also available for “one-pedal” operation. Overall, the Kia EV6 offer many fine attributes- decent range and quick charging, And a unique design with a versatile interior. On road performance is very impressive and there are plenty of models. The EV6t will still qualify it for federal and provincial green car incentives and rebates. This new EV6 comes highly recommended. Good show Kia! 2022 Kia EV6 priced from: $44,995 - $61,995. Review by Veeno Dewan The facelifted XC90 remains a remarkably likable luxury SUV with PHEV capability. You get awesome Scandinavian design, inside and out in the form of an expensive, looking exterior and a sophisticated interior. There is excellent safety and standard active tech and a range of models in the line-up. The 2022 XC90 is available in a sixor seven-seat luxury format and all models now come with blind-spot steering assist, and standard LED headlights. Wireless smartphone charging and front parking sensors are also standard for 2022. Volvo has also updated its Sensus infotainment suite improving its load time and responsiveness. Few changes on the outside, The waterfall grille is slightly different, and there are some new wheel and paint options, The XC90’s handsome exterior is as unchanged– understated is the word here. In terms of models there is a base T5 version of the XC90, with a 250-horsepower turbo-4 and front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive optional) and an 8-speed automatic. The T6 version pairs the turbo-4 with a supercharger and all-wheel drive, delivering 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. We tested the top of the- line XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid Inscription “T8” that takes the T6 engine and all-wheel drive and adds on an electric motor and an 11.6-kwh battery to provide approximately 455hp combined and 58 kilometres of miles of all-electric driving when fully charged. The hybrid model is charged through a port in the left driver’s side. A level 2 charger is recommended. Standard 120-volt charge is pretty feeble. XC90 Momentum models with frontwheel drive. It comes with a power tailgate, synthetic leather upholstery, and Volvo’s 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. safe vehicle with every safety tech you can think of present. On the road, the XC90 doesn’t disappoint, one of the first thing that surprises you is the serene, hushed ride. The SUV is relaxing to drive with stable, no drama handling. It feels agile, with its firm, comfortable 4 corner suspension system. A high
ride height, great visibility and a ride erring on sporty make the everyday driving experience pleasant. The 8-speed automatic transmission is supremely smooth and responsive. With combined torque at 523 lbs ft from the engine and electric motor at maximum output. The switch between the hybrid and gasoline engine is pretty seamless and the regenerative brakes are more conventional in their use with a smooth modulated action. High points include a, nicely designed hushed luxury cabin, premium materials, and good road manners. Cons include the sometimes-fussy Sensus system and the stingy all electric range at only 58km. Fuel Efficiency is rated at (L/100 km): 9.2 City / 8.46 Highway / 8.9 Combined Not a lot to complain about. The XC90 is wonderfully built and executed, the interior faultless and is priced well in base from, but options state jacking the price up. A good alternative to the usual German and Japanese premium cohorts and you won’t see many around! Comes highly recommended 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid Inscription: $90,000 Price as tested with all options: $103,150 plus freight and PDI More info at www.volvo.ca

People need to pay attention to the name of movies. At first glance the new Sony Pictures Classics flick The Phantom of the Open smacks like the famous horror/musical. Not so here. This savvy tale has nothing to do with opera. Instead be prepared for a thoroughly upbeat experience by way of this Mongrel Media release. For a feel good experience seek this movie out at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas and select Cineplex Cinemas and Landmark Theatres across B.C. Hands down the best documentaries are about real people. Good weather brings out the best in people. Even those trying to “play” the system. Take the case of hard working blue collar stiff Maurice Flitcroft. Man of many talents Mark Rylance is at his uncanny best as a rand operator at a British shipyard. With shipbuilding at a standstill in the mid 70s times are tough. Married to his stand by her man Jean the pair have a trio of rather impressionable young boys. Sally Hawkins comes on strong as the strong and silent type who just loves her man from afar in a largely emotion free way. Ah, but there is lots of internal commotion in their relationship especially as work woes loom. One day from out of the blue Maurice gets a vision. Just like Dr. Martin Luther

BC Government Releases Cullen Commission Final Report and Recommendations
ON Wednesday, June 15, the BC Government publicly released the final report and recommendations from the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering BC. The Commission was established in May 2019 to examine the extent of money laundering in BC. Areas of focus included real estate, as well as the gaming sector, financial institutions, the corporate sector, lawyers and notaries, accountants, luxury goods and virtual assets. Last year, former BCREA Chief Executive Officer Darlene Hyde and Chief Economist Brendon Ogmundson represented BC’s real estate boards and Realtors by participating in the inquiry to provide context and insight into the functions of the real estate sector. In the final report, Commissioner Austin Cullen recommends the creation of a provincial anti-money laundering unit and changes to FINTRAC. Additionally, the Commissioner was unable to find a link between money laundering in real estate and housing unaffordability. “The commissioner’s findings, after more than a year of study, show that the volume of money laundering in our province is ‘enormous’ is profoundly concerning,” said BC Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing David Eby. Focus on real estate One of the many areas of focus of the in-
quiry and final report was money laundering in real estate. In addition to finding no link between housing prices and money laundering, Commissioner Cullen highlighted that “the real estate sector is highly vulnerable to money laundering.” He also wrote that REALTORS®: - have a poor record of anti-money laundering reporting and compliance; display an inadequate understanding of, and hold misplaced beliefs about, how money laundering occurs in the real estate industry; - are confused about how to comply with their federal anti-money laundering obligations; and that - most real estate agents and brokers have no background in compliance or anti-money laundering measures, and there is significant frustration in the industry about the lack of guidance. - The report was also critical of FINTRAC, Canada’s financial intelligence unit, saying that “law enforcement bodies in BC cannot rely on FINTRAC to produce timely, useful intelligence about money laundering.” As a solution, Commissioner Cullen called for the “need for clear, simple guidance from FINTRAC about when transactions must be reported.”

The original medicine of stingless bees
THE American poet Emily Dickinson understood the profound gifts of nature. She wrote, “The lovely flowers embarrass me, They make me regret I am not a bee –” If bees could speak, they might add, “Let me do my work, so that you may live.” Bees are vital pollinators, ensuring the success of a wide variety of the world’s most nutritious agricultural crops grown for human consumption. Most people associate bees with painful stings and the tasty product of the Western honeybee. Being “busy as a bee” is a homage to the industrious nature of this pollinating insect that collects nectar in a dozen or more foraging trips each day. A small percentage of people who are stung by a bee or other insect quickly develop anaphylaxis, a potentially lifethreatening severe allergic reaction that demands emergency treatment. But not all bees sting. Within a niche field of entomology, the study of insects, scientists are studying a special tribe of bee species called stingless bees. They are fascinating members of the animal kingdom, found in the countries located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, as well as the regions just north and south. Stingless bees are the source of a highly prized and distinct kind of honey that studies have shown to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Said to be the “Mother Medicine”, the matured nectar produced by native stingless bees includes chemicals that ward off microbial and fungal growth, an adaptation to keep the substance from spoiling in the tropics. Given the wide variety of plant biodiversity in the Amazon, and the incredible range of botanical chemicals the bees mix into their honey, it’s also no surprise it has medicinal value. The propolis, or gluey resinous mixture they use to seal their hives, is also prized. Dr. Kathrin Krausa is a visiting scientist at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology. She and beekeeper Warren Steyn know where these special bee species can be found. Local beekeepers in Tanzania have successfully established thousands of colonies on the forested slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. That amounts to millions of bees producing enough of the highly prized, natural antibiotic to meet local demand and to facilitate the emergence of an export market. The industry is small, but the promise for subsistence farmers to get a start in business is large. Said to be the “Mother Medicine”, the honey produced by stringless bees leverages nature’s remarkable biodiversity. “The matured nectar produced by native stingless bees includes chemicals that ward off microbial and fungal growth,” Krausa says. Steyn appreciates the amount of delicate labour involved in the harvest. “Western honeybees will keep Winnie-the-Pooh stocked with pots of the gooey sweetness,” he says. “Stingless bee honey is better consumed by the teaspoon, as part of a natural health regimen.” African communities have long known the medicinal properties of stingless bee honey. “They keep colonies as a first aid boxes next to their houses,” Steyn says. But what’s so important about the biological qualities of a rare honey for people a world away? The emerging scientific literature on stingless bee honey offers evidence
that the presence of enormously active chemical compounds produced by plants can hold significant therapeutic uses in diabetes and cancer treatments too. Natural approaches are a good first line of defence against the development and treatment of disease. This outlook is paramount in sustaining a world that values biodiversity, questions the safety and side effects of pharmacological medicine, and takes reduction of waste, pollutants, and carbon emissions seriously.
