The senior’s grandson told the media that police have some surveillance footage from a nearby bank that could help in identifying the attacker. The grandson said that his grandfather who had to undergo surgery might no

ON November 6, at approximately 9 p.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a fire in the 7200-block of Gilley Avenue where frtontline officers located a parade float in the parking lot of a Sikh Temple that was on fire. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire, however, there was some damage to the exterior of the
building and smoke damage to one of the rooms. At this early point in the investigation, arson investigators have not discovered anything that would indicate this incident was racially motivated. Police are asking for anyone that may have witnessed this incident or has a dash cam and was driving in
the area of Beresford Street and Gilley Avenue on the evening of Friday, November 6 between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to contact them. “Luckily, Burnaby Fire Department was quick to respond and there were no injuries as a result of this incident,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “However, the risk of injury in this type of situation is high and we’re
asking anyone with information that can help police in this investigation to please come forward.’ If you witnessed this incident or have any information that could assist the investigation, contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 or, if you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477) or www.solvecrime.ca.

BIDEN IS NEXT U.S. PRESIDENT Kamala Harris will be first female and first biracial U.S. Vice President JOE Biden is the next President of the United States. The democratic presidential candidate and former vice president finally garnered 270 electoral votes on Saturday morning after a victory in Pennsylvania, where he was born, gave him 20 more electoral votes. And Kamala Harris will be the next Vice President of the United States. She will be the first female and first biracial Vice President. Biden said in a statement: “I am honored and humbled by the trust that the American people have placed in me and in Vice
President-elect Harris. In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, democracy beats deep in the heart of America. With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal. We are the United States of America. And there’s nothing we can’t do, if we do it together.” Harris tweeted: “This election is about so much more than Joe Biden or me. It’s Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started.” President Donald Trump said in a statement from his campaign that Biden is “rushing to falsely pose as the winner,” and called the race “far from over,” CNN reported. He said: “Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated.” He added: “I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands.”

(Chitti is a col-
loquial word widely used in Tamil Nadu state of India for mother’s younger sister or paternal uncle’s wife.) In a series of tweets, Modi said, “Congratulations Joe Biden on your spectacular victory! I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership.” Modi’s remarks came soon after Biden, the former two-term vice president and a Senate veteran, won the US Presidential elections to be the 46th President of the US. Harris will be the next vice president, the first woman and the first person of colour to hold the office. Congress President Sonia Gandhi also extended warmest congratulations to Biden and Harris.
She said, “Under the wise and mature leadership of President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris; India looks forward to a close partnership that will be beneficial to peace and development in our region and around the world.” Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden. Kamala Harris hails Biden for “audacity” in choosing a woman as running mate New York (IANS): America’s Vice President-elect Kamala Harris delivered a rousing victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware, hitting familiar themes and hailing Joe Biden for his “audacity” in choosing a woman as his running mate. “Every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” Harris said to wild cheers. Harris’ mother Shyamala Gopalan, core to every Harris stump, came in for special mention. Harris arrived in a motorcade flashing red and blue lights, the first sign that the earth has shifted from beneath the Donald Trump-Mike Pence White House. When she spoke, Harris offered glimpses of the incredible promise of multicultural America. Dressed in a luminous peach and white pant suit with satin tones, Harris beamed as she walked on stage to the sounds of her favourite hip hop music. Here are a few standout quotes from Harris’ powerful remarks at a location that has come to be known as America’s most famous parking lot: “Congressman John Lewis, before
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with their spouses. his passing, wrote democracy is granted and protecting our democnot a state. It is an act. And what he racy takes struggle. It takes some meant was that America’s democ- sacrifices, but there is joy in it. And racy is not guaranteed. It is only as there is progress. Because we, the strong as our willingness to fight for people, have the power to build a it. To guard it, and never take it for better future.”
“My mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris…who is always in our hearts. When she came here from India at the age of 19, she could not have imagined this moment. But she believed so deeply in America, where a moment like this is possible. And so I’m thinking about her, and about the generations of women, Black women, Native American women who have paved the way for this moment tonight.” “What a testament it is to Joe’s character that he has the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country, and select a woman as his vice president. But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last. Because every little girl, watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they’ve never seen it before, but know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”
Kamala Harris and her mother “And to the American people. No matter who you voted for. I will strive to be a vice president, like Joe was to President Obama: loyal, honest, and prepared waking up every day thinking of you and your family. Because now is when the real work begins, the hard work, the necessary work, the good work, the essential work to save lives and beat this epidemic to rebuild our economy.”
Trudeau speaks with US President-elect Biden PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday spoke with U.S. Presidentelect Joe Biden to congratulate him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their election win. Trudeau was the first international leader to speak with Biden after his win. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Trudeau and Biden “agreed on the importance of the unique Canada-U.S. partnership, and committed to work together to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic and to support a sustainable economic recovery in both countries and the
Justin Trudeau hemisphere.” The statement added: “The two
leaders looked forward to cooperating on the fight against climate change, on migration, and on global security, and to working closely together within NATO and the G7. They also agreed on the importance of addressing antiBlack racism. “The Prime Minister looked forward to further strengthening the Canada-U.S. relationship and to engaging on key issues, including trade, softwood lumber, Buy America, and energy cooperation such as Keystone XL. “The Prime Minister also raised the cases of Canadians Michael
Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who have been arbitrarily detained in China.” Trudeau and Biden agreed to stay in close contact. ON Saturday Trudeau had congratulated Biden and Harris on their election as the next President and Vice President of the United States of America on behalf of the Government of Canada. He said in a statement: “Canada and the United States enjoy an extraordinary relationship – one that is unique on the world stage. Our shared geography, common inter-
ests, deep personal connections, and strong economic ties make us close friends, partners, and allies. We will further build on this foundation as we continue to keep our people safe and healthy from the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and work to advance peace and inclusion, economic prosperity, and climate action around the world. “I look forward to working with President-elect Biden, Vice President-elect Harris, their administration, and the United States Congress as we tackle the world’s greatest challenges together.”

‘Like a student eager to impress the teacher’: Obama on Rahul Gandhi in his memoir FORMER U.S. President Barack Obama says Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has a “nervous, unformed quality” about him like a student eager to impress the teacher but lacking aptitude

talked about political leaders from around the world. On Gandhi, Obama says he has “a nervous, unformed quality about him, as if he were a student who’d done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject,” according to The New York Times review. Gandhi’s mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi also appears to find mention in the memoir. The review said in the memoir “We are told of the handsomeness of men like Charlie Crist and Rahm Emanuel, but not the beauty of women, except for one or two instances, as in the case of Sonia Gandhi.” Former U.S. Secretary of Defence Bob Gates and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh both come across as having a kind of impassive integrity, the review states. It added that Russian President Vladimir Putin reminds Obama of the tough, street-smart ward bosses who used to run the Chicago machine.

Trudeau’s Liberals must act immediately to counter white supremacy: Federal NDP FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and advocacy groups on Tuesday noted that Canada has seen a 200% increase in active hate groups in the last five years, making families feel unsafe in their communities, and demanded that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals must do more to tackle online hate and dismantle white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in Canada.

The 768-page memoir, expected to hit the stands on November 17, chronicles Obama’s childhood and political rise, before diving deeply into his historic 2008 campaign and first four years in office. Obama was the first African-American president of the United States. He visited India twice as the U.S. President — in 2010 and 2015.

Singh said: “Hate and far-right ideology spread like fire online and Justin Trudeau has been slow to tackle this issue. People need to feel safe in their towns, workplaces, schools and online. We are often told that white supremacy and racism exist only in the United States. This is misleading. Farright extremist groups are operating across Canada, right now. Trudeau’s Liberals cannot sit on the sideline, they must act immediately to counter hate groups wherever they are.” In 2015, according to counter-terrorism experts in Canada, Canada had 100 alt-right or white supremacist groups operating in Canada. Now, we have over 300. As the number of alt-right and neoNazi groups grow in Canada, we now know that without action today, it will simply be a matter of time before the next attack against people. Singh said: “Nobody should feel unsafe and worried that they could be the target of such groups. Many people face discrimination, racism and hate in their daily lives in Canada. The Liberal government must immediately use all its tools to dismantle white supremacist groups and tackle online hate by implementing measures that will make social media platforms accountable to remove hateful and violent extremism content on their platforms.” The NDP invited Canadians to join their call on Trudeau’s Liberals to take immediate action against hate-groups by signing at: https://www. ndp.ca/stop-hate

Fraser Health encourages different type of celebration this year AS COVID-19 cases continue to rapidly increase in our region, Fraser Health is asking people in our communities to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their communities from COVID-19 transmission by honouring momentous occasions differently this year. It’s important to use good COVID-19 sense, follow the new provincial health officer orders that limit social interactions and travel, and find safe ways to observe the many cultural celebrations and festivals taking place at this time of the year. There are many occasions to be celebrated at this time of year, including Diwali and Karwa Chauth, and we can honour these days and still keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, says Fraser Health. Follow Fraser Health Public Health guidance and the new provincial health officer orders, and socialize safely: * Celebrate milestones and celebrations at home, and with ONLY the members of your immediate household. Do not have people in your home for a celebration or party if they don’t already live there. Do not have outdoor gatherings with people who are not part of your immediate
household. * Connect virtually through a video call or by phone with extended family, friends, and loved ones, and say no to in-person invitations. * Sharing food buffet style is not safe right now and if you are preparing festive meals for your household, put them on a separate plate for each person. * Wear a mask when shopping for festival celebrations, and if you are feeling unwell, stay home and ask someone who lives in your home to shop for you. * Keep in mind that churches and other religious
centres have put important COVID-19 safety measures in place to protect you, including physical distancing. As long as those safety plans are in place, you can continue to worship there. * Celebrate Diwali by joining live stream prayers and lighting Divaa or Diya at home. Fraser Health has listed some online events below but check with your local place of worship as they may have additional events planned. Download some of the translated shareable resources to spread the word about ways to celebrate safely. Virtual prayer options: * Gurdwaras – Gudwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib video * Gurdwaras – Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society video * Radio – Gudwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib * Radio – Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Radio * Mobile app – Apple * Mobile app – Google Play (For the links, visit our website voiceonline.com) Being COVID-19 safe is also practicing good hygiene, physically distancing, wearing a mask in
public spaces, self-isolating when you are feeling unwell, and getting tested if you have even the mildest of symptoms. Help spread the word about COVID-19 by: * Visiting the website at fraserhealth.ca/covid19 for information you can trust about COVID-19. * Posting and sharing English language as well as translated COVID-19-related materials in Punjabi, Hindi, Farsi, Simplified Chinese and Korean. * Sharing BC’s online COVID-19 assessment tool. At this time, it’s critically important for people living in the Fraser Health region to use the COVID-19 assessment tool and get tested as soon as they have COVID19-like symptoms, even mild ones. Don’t wait, and book or drop by one of Fraser Health’s collection centres which are operated in partnership with local Divisions of Family Practice. People living in the Fraser Health region can find information about test collection centres by visiting Fraser Health’s website. To book a COVID-19 testing appointment, complete a COVID-19 test booking form. For more information about COVID-19, visit fraserhealth.ca/covid19.
New provincial health officer order for the Lower Mainland
PROVINCIAL health officer orders are in effect from Saturday, November 7 at 10 p.m. through to Monday, November 23 at noon and includes the following: Social gatherings * There are to be no social gatherings of any size with anyone other than your immediate household. This includes gatherings of fewer than 50 people. People who live alone must host no gatherings, but can continue to see members of their pandemic bubble at home.
* Funerals and weddings may proceed with your immediate household, but there are to be no associated receptions inside or outside your home, or at any public or community-based venue. * Party buses and group limousines operating in these regions are ordered to stop operating (this order remains in effect until further notice).
* All travel for sports, into or out of these regions, is suspended.
Group physical activities * Businesses, recreation centres or other organizations that organize or operate indoor group physical activities must stop these activities until
updated COVID-19 safety plans that have been approved by the local medical health officer are in place. * This includes: spin classes, group fitness, dance classes or any other indoor group physical activity. * Indoor sports where physical distancing cannot be maintained are suspended for two weeks but can be replaced by individual exercise or practice by reducing the number of people and ensuring everyone maintains a safe physical distance.
They said: “Right now, it is very important that everyone in these regions significantly reduces their social interactions. “The orders focus on three areas: social gatherings, group physical activities and workplaces, and are outlined in the following backgrounder. “We are putting measures in place to better protect people who participate in group physical activities and we are also requiring all businesses and worksites to revisit and ensure strict adherence to their COVID-19 safety protocols.
“We appreciate this takes sustained daily effort and sacrifice, but these actions are critical to us keeping businesses open and communities safe over the winter months. “In support of this new order, active inspections are being increased and businesses that do not comply will be subject to fines, and/or ordered to close, until a refreshed safety plan and commitment to comply are established. “Finally, we are strongly recommending travel into and out of these regions be limited to es-
sential travel only and people within the regions stay within their local community, as much as possible. We ask those who live outside of the regions not to visit unless it is essential. “Provincial health officer orders are always a last resort, and these additional measures are required right now. “We need everyone to help us keep our wall strong to re-double our efforts to protect our hospitals, our schools, our workplaces and our communities.”
Workplace safety * All businesses and worksites must conduct active daily screening of all on-site workers using their COVID-19 safety plans. * Workplaces must ensure that all workers and customers maintain enough physical distance, wear masks where appropriate, and be especially vigilant in small office spaces, break rooms and kitchens.

Alzheimer Society of B.C. has released new resource in Punjabi AS Diwali approaches, for many of us this time of year is an opportunity for socializing with family, friends and our wider community. The current COVID-19 situation is presenting new challenges and uncertainty to what can be an already stressful time – a feeling that is felt even more acutely by people affected by dementia. Remembering a grandchild’s name, being included in group conversations or visiting a new place are all experiences that may challenge a person living with the disease and affect their experience of the holidays. To increase awareness and provide strategies to help caregivers and people living with dementia prepare for the holidays during COVID-19, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. has released a new resource in Punjabi. “The holidays can present difficulties for people living with dementia for a multitude of reasons, says Joti Sandhu, Support and Education Coordinator, First Link for South Asian Communities. “Large groups of people, different activities happening at the same time, background noise, unfamiliar places and visual stimulus like flickering candles – these factors can all easily lead to sensory overload for a person living with dementia. This year’s celebrations for Diwali will undoubtedly look different and that uncertainty can add additional challenges for people living with dementia, caregivers, family members and friends. In this new Punjabi-language video from the society, which is available to watch at alzbc. org/3l9OMHC, caregivers will learn how to adapt their plans to minimize stress during the holiday season and learn strategies on several topics, including gift giving and celebrating at home. “It’s important to understand what a person may find challenging, so that we can adapt accordingly. Even small changes can make a big difference and ensure everyone has the best Diwali experience possible, Joti says. These online resources are part of the culturally-specific support that the Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers for the South Asian community, which also includes the First Link Dementia Helpline. The helpline is a free, confidential resource for people living with dementia, caregivers, friends, health-care professionals or anyone with questions about dementia or memory loss. The helpline is available in English from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information and support is also available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. in Punjabi (1-833-674-5003) and in Cantonese or Mandarin (1-833-674-5007). Other Punjabi-language resources include recorded dementia education webinars that are available anytime. Two of these video series, “Dementia friends and “Getting to know dementia, are online at alzbc.org/3drAei1.

There were two new COVID-19-related deaths, and the total number of deaths now stands at 290 in the province. gion, 424 in the Fraser Health region, 16 in the Island Health region, 42 in the Interior Health region, five in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada. There have been three new health-care facility outbreaks at Sun Pointe Village, Capilano Care Centre and Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge. The outbreaks at Queens Park Hospital, Lakeview Care Centre, Yaletown House and St. Michael’s Centre are now over. In total, 35 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and six acute-care facilities have active outbreaks. There have been no new community outbreaks and the outbreaks at Coast Spas and Pace Processing are now over. Henry and Dix pointed out: “As yesterday’s modelling update clearly showed, this is a critical time for everyone in our province. We need to act now to protect our loved ones, our Elders and our communities. “When faced with a resurgence of COVID-19, it can be difficult to muster the strength to keep moving forward, yet British Columbians continue to show unwavering resilience and fortitude to support friends and neighbours in our communities and take care of those who are most at risk, by following the orders and using our layers of protection. “This weekend, we encourage everyone to have a safe start to Diwali celebrations by staying home, limiting your travel and connecting virtually instead. “Now is the time for everyone, right across our province, to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 – to be leaders by working together with a common purpose to push our curve back down.
Surrey Mayor McCallum: Celebrate Diwali safely this year
SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday issued the following statement asking residents to celebrate Diwali safely this year: “On behalf of City Council, I want to wish everyone a very happy and safe Diwali this year. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a much-loved cultural tradition in Surrey that promotes the message of unity, warmth and joy. Like all big celebrations, Diwali is traditionally a time for family and friends to come together to enjoy food and each other’s company. This year, however, celebrations must be approached differently.

“With the recent sharp rise of new COVID-19 cases in Metro Vancouver a new Provincial Health Order was issued this past weekend and it is vital that Diwali celebrations comply with the new order. If we all do our part, we can rein in the spread of the virus and bring the curve back down. That is why it is more important than ever that this year’s celebrations are kept only to your immediate household as mandated by the Provincial Health Order. That means no social gatherings, whether they be indoors or outdoors, of any size beyond your immediate household. “I am proud of how the vast majority of our community have taken the COVID public health protocols to heart. We must all continue to take personal responsibility to limit the spread of this virus so we can better our odds of getting back to the way of life we all want sooner rather than later. Make no mistake about it, the actions we take now will have a long-term impact in our fight against COVID. So do your part and keep yourself, your loved ones and your community safe by fully observing the new Provincial Health Order that has been put in place between now and November 23.

State of emergency extended in B.C. THE Province of British Columbia on Tuesday formally extended the provincial state of emergency, allowing health and emergency management officials to continue to use extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act to support the Province’s COVID-19 pandemic response. The state of emergency is extended through the end of the day on November 24 to allow staff to continue to take the necessary actions to keep British Columbians safe and manage immediate concerns and COVID-19 outbreaks. “This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we’re all in it together,” said Premier John Horgan. “It’s time to focus on the actions that helped keep us safe this spring: diligent handwashing, physical distancing, wearing a mask and staying home when you’re sick. We all have a role to play in supporting our health-care workers, the
health-care system and essential workers, and we must do all we can to keep our loved ones safe, schools open and the economy moving.” The extension of the provincial state of emergency is based on recommendations from B.C.’s health and emergency management officials. The original declaration was made on March 18, the day after Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer (PHO), declared a public health emergency. Recent increases in the number of cases of COVID-19 in all regions of B.C, but particularly concentrated in the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, have led to the PHO issuing further restrictions on social gatherings, indoor group exercise and travel for a two-week period in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health regions. The Province continues to urge all British Columbians to follow the orders and guidance
of public health officials to combat rising cases and help avoid further restrictions. “Now more than ever, we are asking all British Columbians to pull together and redouble our efforts to flatten the curve,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “The vast majority of British Columbians are doing the right things and following the advice of public health officials. Our government will continue to ensure that police and other enforcement officials have the tools necessary to address the selfish actions of a small minority of people who take needless risks with our collective health.” The Province continues to use, with the support of police and other enforcement officials, measures under the Emergency Program Act to limit the spread of COVID-19. This includes issuing tickets for owners or organizers contravening the PHO’s
als who refused to comply with direction from law enforcement. The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is continually working to align Emergency Program Act enforcement orders with those of the restrictions enacted by the PHO. Additionally, since the pandemic began, police agencies in British Columbia have issued 58 violation tickets to individuals who are in contravention of the Federal Quarantine Act, totalling $64,000. The purpose of the Quarantine Act is to protect public health by taking comprehensive measures to prevent the introduction and spread of communicable diseases. On July 10, the COVID-19 Related Measures Act came into force, enabling provisions created for citizens and businesses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to continue as needed should the provincial state of emergency end.
Mike Farnworth orders. Between August 21 and November 9, 47 violation tickets were issued, including: * 19 $2,300 tickets to owners or organizers contravening the PHO’s order on gatherings and events; * two $2,300 violation tickets for contravention of the PHO’s Food and Liquor Serving Premises Order; and * 26 $230 tickets issued to individu-

Working in partnership with local governments and other agencies, a comprehensive and integrated compliance and enforcement regime has been built. These violation tickets build on existing tools, such as the ability to suspend or revoke the business or liquor licences of problematic operators. Quick Facts * Section E of the PHO’s revised order on gatherings and events prohibits the operation of party buses in affected areas. This prohibition is in place until rescinded by the PHO. * In this case, “affected areas” refers to the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions. * Shuttles and small buses may still operate to transport people to and from work, work meetings or health-care appointments. * The specifics around orders of the PHO, including the numbers allowable at gatherings and events, will continue to be set at the direction of the PHO. * To report concerns around order violations
from event organizers, venues or individuals, people are asked to contact their local government’s bylaw office. Local bylaw officers can help follow up on concerns and engage police departments, health officers and WorkSafeBC as
necessary. If unable to reach a local bylaw office, contact the local police department’s nonemergency line. All PHO orders are available here: www.gov. bc.ca/phoguidance tion Free Consulta eaking” Sp i ab nj Pu & “English

MIKE Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, is aligning the Province’s ticketing measures with the provincial health officer’s (PHO) orders, giving police and other provincial enforcement officers the ability to issue violation tickets for additional contraventions in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health regions. The new ticketing measures under the Emergency Program Act apply to party buses and limousines. The measures allow police and other enforcement officers to issue additional fines. People who operate or permit operation of perimeter-seating vehicles or perimeter-seating buses in contravention of the PHO’s orders will be subject to a $2,000 fine. People taking part in a social gathering on a bus or limousine in these regions could face individual fines of $200. Conservatives demand resignation of Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi who has quit Liberal caucus
MICHAEL Barrett, Conservative Critic for Ethics, said in a statement on Tuesday: “Following the news that Trudeau Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi was wrongfully employing her sister with taxpayer dollars, and deliberately hiding this information from Canadians, Conservatives are calling for her immediate resignation.” He added: “This is just another example in a long line of arrogant and entitled behaviour by Liberals, with [Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau leading by example. Liberal
MP Yasmin Ratansi knew it was wrong to employ her sister with taxpayer dollars, yet she went to great lengths to cover-up this information. Canadians deserve better from their elected leaders. “One thing is clear, Trudeau MPs continue to believe that they are entitled to a different set of rules than average Canadians. That employing their sister with taxpayer dollars is ok, as long as they don’t get caught. That giving a half a billion-dollar contract to an organization that pays their family members
is ok, as long as they don’t get caught. And that interfering with the judicial system to benefit a Liberal friendly company is ok, as long as they don’t get caught.” Barrett said that under Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole, his party “will hold the Trudeau Liberals to account and bring good ethical government back to Canada.”
RATANSI, who represents Don Valley East (Ontario), on Monday night announced in a statement on her Facebook that she’s leaving the Liberal caucus. She wrote: “This evening I have advised the Prime Minister’s Office and the Speaker of the House of Commons that I am stepping down from the Liberal Caucus. “I will continue sitting in the House of Commons, representing the fine constituents of Don Valley East, and I will do so as an Independent. “I made an error in judgement by employing my sister in my constituency office, and I have remedied the situation, but this does not excuse the error I made. “Last week, I referred this matter to the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, and I shall follow his recom-
Yasmin Ratansi mendations on how I might remediate the situation. “To the constituents of Don Valley East and to anyone I may have disappointed by my error of judgement, I take full responsibility, and to all I do apologize. “As I await the guidance of the Ethics Commissioner, I have no further remarks to make at this time.”

A single Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarina) was found near the junction of Fraser Highway and Highway 13 in Aldergrove on November 7, approximately five kilometres away from where one was found in Abbotsford on November 2. Both findings are thought to coincide with a phase in the hornets’ life cycle in which they disperse from their nests to look for new hornets to mate with. Each of the five confirmed hornets found in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland since 2019 have been a result of public reports. As no nests have been discovered in the area, the Ministry of Agriculture encourages beekeepers and the public to continue reporting any sightings to the Invasive Species Council of BC, toll-free at 1 888 933-3722, via the council’s “Report Invasives” mobile phone app or online: https://bcinvasives.ca/ report Survey efforts in the Fraser Valley have focused on surveillance and trap monitoring
along 0 Avenue (pronounced as “Zero Avenue”), with the support of local beekeepers and other organizations, as well as in Nanaimo, where a nest was located and destroyed in 2019. In October 2020, Washington State Department of Agriculture entomologists successfully eradicated an Asian giant hornet nest following multiple findings of single hornets in the same area of Blaine, Washington. A sting from an Asian giant hornet can be painful and cause localized swelling, redness and itching due to the larger amount of venom injected. However, they are not interested in humans, pets and large animals. Asian giant hornets hunt insects for food and will attack people only when their nest is disturbed. Premier Horgan: “We’re going to do our level best each and every day” PREMIER John Horgan, reacting to the completion of the final count from the 2020 British Columbia general election on Sunday, said: “I’m humbled and honoured by the support British Columbians have shown for our BC NDP team and want to wish a warm welcome to the newest members of our team of 57 BC NDP MLAs. “Thank you Elections BC staff and volunteers for making voting easy and safe for everyone. Thanks to everyone who put their names forward as candidates. “COVID-19 is presenting us with new challenges each day, and we need to keep the focus where it belongs: keeping ourselves, our families and our communities
healthy, safe and secure. We will get through this together. “Just like we have for the last three and a half years, we’re going to do our level best each and every day to keep BC moving forward and build a better future for everyone. “That’s my commitment to you.”
John Horgan
AFTER the completion of the final count for the 2020 Provincial General Election in every electoral district in the province, the results were as follows: * BC Green Party: 2 * BC Liberal Party: 28 * BC NDP: 57 The NDP picked up an extra two seats: Vernon-Monashee and Abbotsford-Mission.
Voting results for each electoral district by party and candidate are available on the Elections BC website at results.elections.bc.ca. Following the conclusion of final count, a candidate is declared elected in each electoral district and the District Electoral Officer returns the writ of election to the Chief Electoral Officer. The Chief Electoral Officer then reports the candidate elected to the Clerk of the House, formally ending the 42nd Provincial General Election in that electoral district. A writ cannot be returned until at least six days following the end of final count – the period within which a judicial recount can be requested. The writs of election
will be returned the week of November 16 in every electoral district except West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, which is subject to an automatic judicial recount. An automatic judicial recount must take place when the difference between the top two candidates is less than 1/500 of the total ballots considered. The Supreme Court of British Columbia will determine when the judicial recount takes place. West Vancouver-Sea to Sky’s writ will be returned once the judicial recount is complete. BC Liberal Party Executive: Rebuilding and renewal of party
THE BC Liberal Party Executive met on Friday and agreed to important steps in the party’s rebuilding and renewal, according to a party press release. Those steps include: * Immediately initiating an independent debrief of the 2020 election campaign, to include interviews with campaign team
members and input from candidates, campaign managers, and volunteers. * Launching a grassroots outreach process that will include a series of virtual meetings and a range of volunteer-driven advisory committees – focused on engaging underrepresented groups within the party, fostering open and honest conversations about
the party’s future direction, and exploring alternative approaches to candidate nominations. * Agreeing to appoint a neutral, independent Leadership Election Organizing Committee that will consult party members on the timing and arrangements for the upcoming leadership race, then develop rules,
procedures, and timelines for the approval of the Executive. These initiatives recognize that now is the time for serious and exciting debates about the party’s principles, processes, and future – and the doors must be open to every British Columbian who wants a better future for our province, said the press release.
Vancouver Mayor urges Premier to appoint new homelessness czar WITH cold and wet weather upon us and mounting COVID-19 cases, Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart on Tuesday urged Premier John Horgan to appoint a new minister to oversee and coordinate shelter provision and services for Vancouver’s most vulnerable. “Last spring, Premier Horgan appointed Minister Shane Simpson to coordinate help for Vancouver’s most vulnerable neighbours, especially in Oppenheimer Park and the Downtown Eastside, and Min-
ister Simpson did an incredible job,” said Stewart. Two-thirds say government has handled pandemic well; but Liberals, CPC in virtual tie on vote intent the New Democratic Party, while the Bloc Quebecois remain competitive in Quebec. Other Findings * Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole’s favourable rating has increased six points since early Sep-
THE latest study from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds most say the federal government continues to handle the COVID-19 pandemic well. Two-thirds say the government has done a good job – a level relatively unchanged since late March. Further, with opposition criticism over the WE Charity scandal on an apparent hiatus, Trudeau’s personal approval has recovered to 49 per cent, having sat in the mid-40’s over the summer. That said, the vote intention picture remains extremely competitive. Currently 35 per cent of Canadians say they would cast a ballot for the incumbent Liberals if an election were held, while a near identical 33 per cent say they would support the Conservative Party. One-in-five (18%) prefer
tember (30% to 36%), but his unfavourable rating has increased nine (31% to 40%). * NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is viewed favourably by 49 per cent of Canadians and unfavourably by 41 per cent. New Green Party leader Annamie Paul remains rela-
tively unknown among the public (50% say this) * COVID-19 and healthcare are chosen by a wide margin as the top two issues facing Canada currently. Climate change and the economy are atop the second tier of important issues, but well behind the top two.

WorkSafeBC increasing inspections in Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health regions
WORKSAFEBC said on Tuesday it is conducting enhanced COVID-19 inspections and consultations at workplaces in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise. “The focus of our inspections is to ensure employers are effectively implementing measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace, including health screenings,” said Al Johnson, Head of Prevention Services for WorkSafeBC. “We are urging employers to stay vigilant,
including revisiting their existing COVID-19 Safety Plan and updating it as conditions change.” Workplaces identified as having the highest risk for COVID-19 transmission are being prioritized for inspections. This includes workplaces where it is difficult to maintain physical distance, where workers interact with large numbers of people, and where workers come into frequent contact with shared surfaces, tools and equipment. To supplement the inspections, Work-

THE Province is extending the freeze on rent increases effective immediately until July 10, 2021, under the powers of the Emergency Program Act and COVID-19 Related Measures Act. This is an interim measure to provide stability and advance notice for renters and landlords while a new cabinet is sworn in. Increases set to happen on December 1, 2020, are cancelled, along with all pending increases through to July. “We know many renters are still facing income loss and even the slightest increase in rent could be extremely challenging. For that reason, we are extending the freeze on rent increases to provide more security for renters during the pandemic,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “We are all in this together, and it is important for both renters and landlords that people can stay in their homes.” The Province originally froze rent increases on March 18, 2020, with the ban set to expire December 1. All renters who have received notice their rent was set to increase after the March 30, 2020, ban, including increases set for December 1, should disregard those notices and continue to pay their current rent

BCGEU wants stronger mask and renewed remote work policies THE B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has called on the BC Public Service Agency to take immediate action to protect employees in their workplaces as new cases of COVID-19 increase across the province and surge in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. In a conversation with Don Wright, Head of Public Service Agency (PSA), BCGEU President Stephanie Smith urged the province’s largest employer to adopt new
Stephanie Smith workplace safety policies including: making masks mandatory in communal workplace spaces provincewide and supporting remote
work for non-essential workers in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health regions. “The PSA has an opportunity to set a positive example of COVID safety in the workplace that all employers in the province could follow,” said Smith. “I’m pleased they are taking a safer approach to remote work but I believe they could and should show stronger leadership by implementing a mandatory mask policy in their workplaces.” In order to ensure that ade-
quate protections are undertaken for members across various industries, BCGEU Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) officers monitor research on workplace transmission of the virus and works with member OHS committees to ensure that current best practices are followed. As the latest pro-
vincial briefings indicate that enclosed communal workspaces have been linked to COVID-19 infections in the province, BCGEU OHS officers recommended the policies laid out in the letter to Wright. “It is now widely recognized that airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can occur under
certain conditions,” stated a memo included in the letter to Wright. “In light of these developments, and in keeping with the precautionary principle, the government must immediately review and strengthen measures to minimize exposure to the virus among workers in the BC Public Service.”
Agents, brokerages held accountable by CRTC for using company that violated telemarketing rules CRTC’S Chief Compliance and Enforcement Officer (CCEO) Steven Harroun has taken a number of enforcement actions, including issuing over $100,000 in penalties, against several real estate, investment and mortgage agents and brokerages. The agents and brokerages hired a telemarketing firm to recruit prospective clients, which did not abide by the CRTC’s Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. The Commission received over 1,000 complaints related to the third-party telemarketer from 2012 to 2017. Canadians reported to have received telemarketing calls from individuals who were soliciting the services of real estate agents, investment brokers or mortgage brokers. Among other things, individuals and businesses who hire a firm to make calls on their behalf must ensure
that the telemarketer is updating its calling list and that no calls are being made to consumers whose telephone numbers have been registered on the National Do Not Call List for more than 31 days. Should the telemarketer fail to do so, the contracting individual or business can be held liable for their violations. As part of this investigation, the CRTC issued 44 citations, 258 warning letters and 23 notices of violation with penalties totaling $103,300. Harroun said: “We encourage companies who hire a third-party telemarketer to ensure that they are fully in compliance with the National Do Not Call List and the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. Should they fail to do so, the companies will ultimately be held accountable. We thank all Canadians who sent complaints as it helps us identify
non-compliant practices.” Quick Facts * The CRTC received 1,055 complaints from Canadians who reported receiving telemarketing calls from individuals who were soliciting the services of either a real estate agent, mortgage broker or investment broker. * Under the Telecommunications Act, a person can be held liable for a violation that is committed by a thirdparty agent. * When hiring a third-party telemarketer, brokerages are responsible for: – registering with and providing information to the National DNCL operator – becoming a registered subscriber of the National DNCL, and – paying all applicable fees to the extent that their agents initiate telemarketing telecommunications.

TransLink first in North America to test copper coating on transit TRANSLINK will be the first transit system in North America to pilot the use of bacteria-and-virus-killing copper on high-touch transit surfaces. This industryleading project is part of a study that will see various copper-based products and a protective coating called organosilane installed on SkyTrain and buses to test how effective these agents are at destroying viruses and bacteria on transit. There will be comprehensive testing as part of the initial four-week pilot phase: * Products will be installed on two trolley buses on highridership routes and two SkyTrain cars on the Expo and Millennium Lines. * Twice weekly the surfaces will be swabbed and tested to determine antimicrobial effectiveness of the products. * At the end of one month, the surfaces will also be assessed for durability. The results of this pilot could have wide-reaching impacts for infection prevention for the transit industry and other industries that rely on shared public spaces. Copper alloy surfaces are naturally antimicrobial with self-sanitizing properties. Recent literature shows that copper alloy surfaces destroy up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses within
four hours. Organosilane is a wipe-on coating that can provide long-lasting protection against damaging microbes such as bacteria, mold, mildew and many viruses. When used in tandem with good hygiene and cleaning protocols, copper and organosilanes can help inhibit the buildup and growth of viruses and bacteria. The project is the result of a partnership between TransLink, Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Vancouver Coastal Health, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, Coalition for Healthcare Acquired Infection Reduction (CHAIR) Canada, and the University of British Columbia. This initial phase is fully funded by Teck, as part of its Copper & Health program. It is based on preceding studies conducted by the Infection Prevention & Control team
at Vancouver Coastal Health and supported by Teck that have shown copper is effective at killing bacteria and is durable over a period of many years. TransLink is aiming to make transit one of the safest public spaces throughout the pandemic and this measure builds upon the Safe Operating Action Plan. TransLink will continue to research, develop, and implement industry-leading practices on all modes of transit in Metro Vancouver. Kevin Desmond, TransLink CEO, said on Tuesday: “We’re proud to be the first transit agency in North America to pilot this industry-leading technology and I look forward to working closely with our project partners. We’ve been carefully examining new ways to ensure transit is one of the safest public spaces through-
out the pandemic. The risk of COVID-19 transmission on transit remains extremely low and this initiative will only bolster our comprehensive cleaning protocols which are already in place. Any findings from this pilot project will be shared with our fellow transit agency colleagues and other industries which may be able to use this emerging technology.” Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck, added: “We are proud to be working with all the partners on this important pilot project to expand the use of antimicrobial copper in high-traffic public areas and prevent infections. Through the Copper & Health program, Teck has been partnering with healthcare professionals, academia and others for years to help make communities safer. This pilot builds
on those efforts at a critical time as the world works to prevent the spread of COVID-19.” Dr. Marthe Charles, Medical Microbiologist, Vancouver Coastal Health, said: “This project builds on preceding research and will increase our understanding of the effectiveness of copper in killing organisms on frequentlytouched surfaces. Positive findings will then be used to study the impact of copper on bacteria and viruses such as COVID-19 and norovirus. This holds future infection control benefits not only for the public in their travels but for healthcare workers and patients who navigate their medical journey at Vancouver Coastal Health and beyond.” Angela Chapman, President and CEO, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, pointed out: “Our foundation plays
a vital role in funding innovation through medical research in BC. Donor funding has played a role – here in BC and globally – to accelerate our understanding of the COVID-19 virus and its transmission. This project will leverage the expertise of Vancouver Coastal Health’s Infection Prevention & Control team to determine the public health benefits of copper in reducing transmission of COVID-19 and other viruses. We are grateful for the partnership of Teck and TransLink to make this very special “made in BC” research project possible.” Richard Dixon, CHAIR Canada, Chairman and Chief Technology Leader, said: “CHAIR Canada has the privilege of being able to be the project manager for this exciting and innovative transit project that has great potential to make a lasting difference in many facets of daily life for the public. We are a non-profit organization that emphasizes technologies and strategies such as copper alloys that make a major difference in air, water and surface contamination. We work with leading Canadian and international healthcare and industry organizations within the context of these key themes: Collaborate, Investigate, Innovate, Educate, Advocate and Research.”

Trudeau announces investment of $1.75 billion for high-speed Internet across Canada PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced an investment of $1.75 billion to help connect Canadians to high-speed Internet across the country, grow businesses, and create jobs. This investment will connect 98 per cent of Canadians across the country to high-speed Internet by 2026, with the goal of connecting all Canadians by 2030. Announced originally in Budget 2019 as $1 billion, today’s additional funding of $750 million for the Universal Broadband Fund
will help advance projects with partners, like the Canada Infrastructure Bank, to connect Canadian households and businesses in underserved communities over the next six years. This includes a $150 million Rapid Response Stream with an accelerated application process to allow shovel-ready projects to get started right away. With this announcement, the government said it has made $6.2 billion available for universal broadband since 2015. The Prime Minister also announced an
agreement of $600 million with Canadian satellite company Telesat to improve connectivity and expand high-speed Internet coverage to the far north, rural, and remote regions across Canada, through low-earthorbit satellite capacity. The government said this announcement is the largest one-time federal investment in broadband and will make a real difference in the lives of Canadians and businesses across the country. It will support Canadians living in rural, remote, and northern
Trudeau announces details of $1.5 billion in Workforce Development Agreements with provinces British Columbia will receive $212 million PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced the details of an investment of $1.5 billion in the Workforce Development Agreements (WDAs) with provinces and territories. This investment will help Canadians in underrepresented groups and those in sectors that have been hardest hit by the pandemic – such as construction, transportation, and hospitality – quickly access supports to re-enter the workforce. It could include skills training, on-the-job training, employer-sponsored training, financial assistance and benefits, employment counselling and services, and job opportunities. This funding is in addition to the $3.4 billion provided to provinces and territories in 2020-21 under the WDAs and Labour Market Development Agreements (LMDAs). The announcement is part of the government’s plan to make the largest investment in Canadian history in training for workers. This will help the government reach its goal of creating over one million jobs. Working with the provinces and territories, the government will support Canadian workers as they build new skills in growing sectors, help them receive education and accreditation, and connect them to employers and good jobs. Trudeau said: “Millions of Canadians
have now returned to work after losing their jobs at the start of the pandemic, but there is still much more we can do. By investing in skills training and employment supports, we are investing in our biggest asset – our people. We will keep working with all provinces and territories to get the economy back up and running and Canadians back to work.” Carla Qualtrough, federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, said: “Working with our provincial and territorial counterparts, the Government of Canada is getting Canadian workers the training and supports they need to get good jobs as our country cautiously recovers from the impacts of COVID-19. Now more than ever, we need to strengthen workers’ futures and help them succeed as our economy recovers and evolves.” Dominic LeBlanc, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, said: “Our government is focused on working closely with territories and provinces and we share the same goal of ensuring Canadians have opportunities for employment. This investment will give provinces and territories the flexibility they need to deliver the right tools for their residents, so they can find good jobs and help safely restart the economy.”

communities and move forward the Government’s commitment to create over one million jobs. Trudeau said: “Now more than ever, Canadians need reliable access to high-speed Internet as we work, learn, and communicate with our family and friends from home. Traffic stop and dramatic foot chase lead to drug seizure in Whalley SURREY RCMP seized a significant amount of drugs, cash and a vehicle, after a traffic stop and a dramatic foot chase in Whalley. On November 3, Surrey RCMP’s Community Response Unit (CRU) officers were conducting a pro-active patrol when they observed a suspicious vehicle in the 9700-block of 137th Street. As officers approached to conduct a traffic stop, a man got out and ran from the vehicle. The vehicle then fled the area. Several officers pursued the man on foot while others continued to patrol in an effort to re-locate the suspect vehicle. During the foot pursuit, the suspect crossed a pedestrian bridge and was observed throwing a bag into a ravine below. The man attempted to evade police by hiding in a creek of water up to his neck, but he was tracked down and arrested with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service. Officers recovered the bag from the ravine and a large quantity of drugs was allegedly located inside. While one team of officers worked to arrest the man, a second team located and stopped the suspect vehicle shortly after it had fled, in the 10900-block of

Widebody Package Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker and T/A 392 Windsor, Ontario: Dodge is literally expanding the availability of its Widebody Package, bringing it to the Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker and T/A 392 for the 2021 model year. Building on the success of the Challenger Scat Pack 392, the Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker and T/A 392 are powered by the same naturally aspirated 392 HEMI V-8 that delivers 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque. The Widebody on the Challenger Scat Pack 392 adds 8.8 centimetres (3.5 inches) of overall width, rides on sticky 305/35ZR20 Pirelli tires mounted to 20-by-11-inch wheels and has an SRT-tuned chassis and SRT-tuned high-performance adaptive damping suspension. It also features steering-wheelmounted paddle shifters (with automatic transmission), dualextractor hood, SRT Performance Pages with drive modes and Line Lock, which engages the front brakes to hold the Challenger stationary, but leaves the rear wheels free for a burnout to heat up and clean
the rear tires. Now, new for 2021, Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker and T/A 392 buyers who opt for the Widebody Package will get the same Widebody performance, which includes an improvement of close to 2 seconds per lap or 12 car lengths compared with the Scat Pack 392. In a quarter-mile comparison, the Challenger Scat Pack 392 Widebody gains .2 seconds, running a 12.1-second ET at 180 km/h (112 mph). 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker Widebody The Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker’s history goes deep into the 1970 original muscle car era; now Dodge is taking it wide with the Widebody Package with the 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 392 Shaker Widebody. Nissan celebrates production of the 500,000th LEAF
PARIS: In celebration of World EV Day, Nissan today marked the production of the 500,000th LEAF, the world’s first massmarket 100% electric car. With half a million LEAFs built globally, customers around the world continue to embrace the pioneering zero-emission vehicle. The milestone was achieved at Nissan’s plant in Sunderland, England, almost a decade after the model first went on sale. The Nissan LEAF has won accolades around the world including World Car of the Year 2011, Car of the Year 2011 in Europe, and Car of the Year Japan in 2011 and 2012. More importantly, the car has earned the trust
of hundreds of thousands of customers. The 500,000th LEAF found its happy owner, Maria Jansen, in Norway. “My husband and I chose to buy a Nissan LEAF back in 2018, and we loved it,” Jansen said. “We’re very excited to become the proud owners of the 500,000th Nissan LEAF. This car really meets our needs with extended range and enhanced technologies.” The LEAF offers customers advanced technologies to enhance safety, comfort and control on the road. These include the award-winning ProPILOT – a “hands-on, eyes-on” system that allows the car to stop,
restart and stay centered in its lane – and e-Pedal technology for one-pedal driving. Paving the way for an electrified future: LEAF owners have driven more than 14.8 billion cleanair kilometers since 20101. Collectively, they have helped prevent more than 2.4 billion kilograms of CO2 emissions. During recent lockdowns, air quality improved around the world due to a decrease in CO2emitting activities. CRIME OF THE WEEK BURNABY RCMP SEEK WITNESSES TO MULTIPLE VEHICLES ARSONS
Unsolved Crime: Arson Date: October 4, 2020 Location: Burnaby, B.C. Details: File # 2020-40027
On Sunday, October 4th, at 7 a.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of two burned vehicles in the area of Beresford Street and Dow Avenue. While at this scene, police were alerted to another fire that was already extinguished approximately 100 metres away. This fire involved a tent that was occupied by two people. As they continued their investigation, Burnaby RCMP Frontline officers located an additional scene just north of Central Boulevard on Bonsor Avenue. Three vehicles were damaged, including one which was partially burnt. In this instance the suspect's attempts to fully burn the vehicles were unsuccessful as he was confronted by a witness and fled. After conducting a thorough canvass in this neighbourhood, police have established that this arson occurred at 6:30 a.m.
