Well-known Surrey businessman Tony Singh (centre), Founder and President of Fruiticana, on Wednesday presented a cheque for $101,000 to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation to support pediatric diabetes. “Today, 2,500 kids in BC live with diabetes – and that number is expected to increase by as much as 35% by 2030. The majority of them will have to endure a never-ending cycle of insulin injections – and many other relentless health considerations – for the rest of their lives,” said Singh, who is known for his charity work. Safe Surrey Coalition writes to Elections BC to intervene with policing referendum campaigners Consistent disregard for bylaws, rules and regulations render initiative efforts unfair and illegitimate AFTER weeks of completely ignoring bylaw enforcement officers and various parameters set out for the initiative process, the Safe Surrey Coalition has written a letter to Elections BC requesting an investigation into, and subsequent action on, the Surrey policing referendum campaign. As can be seen in the photo, the proponents are advertising community signing events that continue to use large signage within public spaces, which is in contravention of Surrey City by-law 13480 that prohibits advertising of any kind in the city’s public parks. Further, the Safe Surrey Coalition has also contacted various private landlords about petitioners using

their property, only to be told that not only have they not provided consent (written or otherwise), but in many instances, didn’t even know the petitioners were on their premises. According to the Elections BC website: “Canvassers must obtain permission from the landlord or property owner before gathering signatures on private property or at public facilities. This includes apartment buildings, strata properties, malls, recreation centres, and

schools. Wherever signatures are being gathered, canvassers must abide by any applicable bylaws, rules or regulations.” With a group that doesn’t believe in the legitimacy of local enforcement and has no intention of abiding by Surrey’s bylaws, Elections BC needs to step up now before the referendum efforts are brought before the courts, according to Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “The petitioners’ campaign began with the announcement that they

were disregarding the requirement to collect signatures in 87 communities and continues to show a lack of respect and regard for local laws or residents,” said McCallum on Saturday. “That aside, their growing list of bylaw infractions and infringement of public and private spaces without consent is unacceptable, and Elections BC must conduct a full investigation with the 90-day time frame now more than half complete.”

New Westminster apologizes for its council’s role in 1914 Komagata Maru incident Canada. The apology reads:

THE City of New Westminster’s Council apologized on Monday (September 27) for the role the City Council played back in 1914 in the Komagata Maru incident. The Council apologized in English , Hindi and Punjabi. Mayor Jonathan X. Cote and councillors Chinu Das, Patrick Johnstone, Jaimie McEvoy, Nadine Nakagawa, Chuck Puchmayr and Mary Trentadue presented the formal apology to Raj Singh Toor, who’s grandfather was on the Komagata Maru, and Harbhajan Singh Athwal, President of the Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster (see photos).

According to Wikipedia, the Komagata Maru incident involved a Japanese steamship on which a group of people from British India attempted to immigrate to Canada in April 1914, but most were denied entry and forced to return to Calcutta (presentday Kolkata). There, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 20 people. The steamship was carrying 376 passengers: 337 Sikhs, 27 Muslims and 12 Hindus, all Punjabis and British subjects. Of these 376 passengers, 24 were admitted to

Apology to the community, families and descendants of the Komagata Maru On March 1, 2021 New Westminster City Council received a report detailing actions of the City during the 1914 Komagata Maru incident. This work was undertaken at the request of Raj Singh Toor of the Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society. The report revealed that Council’s actions of the day were discriminatory and racist. This prompted a motion that the City offer an apology to the community, families and descendants of those who were impacted negatively by the actions and words of the Council of New Westminster during the incident. The City of New Westminster acknowledges, based on a review of City records covering the period from 1912 through 1916, that it acted in a discriminatory manner towards people of South Asian descent. The City of New Westminster acknowledges that its formal support of discriminatory, racist and exclusionary legislation contributed to the plight of the passengers of the Komagata Maru, both in Canadian waters and upon their return to India. The City of New Westminster acknowledg-

es that for over 100 years the South Asian community has been a socially supportive and active part of New Westminster’s community. City actions of the day would have made its South Asian residents feel unwelcome and unsafe in their community. Currently, about 5,790 people of South Asian ancestry continue to call New Westminster their home. The past actions of Council are not consistent with current Council values and strategic priorities around Reconciliation, Inclusion and Engagement. To this end, the City has committed to naming both the docks of the Q to Q Ferry and the Queensborough River Walk in memory of the Komagata Maru; to act as a reminder its past harmful acts to the South Asian community and to foster respect and understanding for their histories. The City of New Westminster formally apologizes to the South Asian community and the descendants of the survivors of the Komagata Maru for its past actions which resulted in discrimination and exclusion. The City looks forward to working together inclusively; in the spirit of friendship, community and co-operation to build strong bonds and lasting relations. B.C. mandates masks for kindergarten to Grade 3 students as well THE Province on Friday announced that it is updating its K-12 education health and safety guidelines to require masks for kindergarten to Grade 3 students as well. The Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby school districts had already expanded their mask mandate to cover all students. “In-person learning is crucial for the social and educational well-being of students. The health and safety guidelines in our schools were developed under the guidance and direction of the Public Health Office (PHO) and BC Centre for Disease Control to allow children to safely attend school on a full-time, in-person basis,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. “We know there is a high level of concern among some parents, students, teachers

and boards of education, especially in regions of B.C. where transmission rates are higher. We are listening to the concerns of people and, on the advice of the provincial health officer, taking further action so that families, students and staff feel secure.” Beginning Monday, October 4, all students in B.C. schools will be required to wear a mask when inside a school building, including while at their desks and on buses. This builds on the existing guidelines that currently apply to all students in grades 4 to 12. “This pandemic continues to evolve and so do we,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer. “We need to make changes to fit the situation as it’s arising. We know the COVID-19 virus is being transmitted

more rapidly, particularly to those who don’t have the protection that vaccination offers. This extra measure adds another layer of protection as we navigate this phase of the pandemic.” Beginning this month, the PHO will release a new monthly report that will inform British Columbians about the virus and how it effects school-aged children. As announced in August, regional medical health officers (MHOs) may recommend additional health and safety measures in response to local and regional conditions. MHOs will continue to work with school districts to recommend any additional regional measures as required. These measures build on the existing K-12 health and safety guidelines, which were

developed in consultation with all education partners. The guidelines include daily health checks, hand washing, staying home when sick and improved ventilation systems. The guidelines also contain strategies for schools to help create space between people, including staggered recess, lunch breaks and class transition times, managing the flow of people in common areas, and using available space to spread people out. The Government said it will continue to be responsive to changes in the pandemic and will continue working with parents, teachers, school districts, First Nations rightsholders and all education partners to make sure schools are safe for students, teachers, and staff.

Surrey seeks feedback on expansion to City Centre’s Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre THE City of Surrey launched a survey on Wednesday to collect feedback from residents and community stakeholders on a state-of-the-art expansion to City Centre’s Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. The project will include an expanded range of recreation, sports, arts, and culture programming; new indoor and outdoor amenities; and enhanced learning and social opportunities. To meet the growing needs of Whalley and City Centre, the City is seeking input from the community on which activities, features and amenities are important to them. The feedback will help shape space planning, building design and facility programming. In addition to the community survey, the City will be conducting stakeholder workshops and focus groups. Residents who take the survey can enter for a chance to win a $100 gift card. The survey is open until October 20. The contract for the design and construction administration was awarded to Shape Architecture Inc. in July. In September, the City awarded the contract for project management to Turnbull Construction Project Managers Ltd. Construction is planned to begin in late 2022/early 2023 and is estimated to be completed in early 2025. In the next 25 years, City Centre’s population is expected to grow to around 85,000 residents. By 2045, the emerging downtown Surrey will be the business and cultural centre of British Columbia’s most populous municipality. The Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre expansion is one of 20-plus capital projects approved by Surrey City Council as part of the Surrey Invests Program included in the FiveYear (2021–2025) Financial Plan – Capital Program. L.A. Matheson Secondary receives $7,501 donation for Aboriginal program from Canada India Education Society

3YV OMHW ERH XLIMV XIEGLIVW

;368, -2:)78-2+ -2

:RUOG 7HDFKHUV 'D\ A message from the Surrey Teachers’ Association

THE Aboriginal program at L.A. Matheson Secondary is receiving a financial boost, thanks to a donation of $7,501 from the Canada India Education Society (CIES). CIES executive director Barj Dhahan presented a cheque to the school from money contributed through the “Leaders of the Heart and Mind” summer fundraiser held by the charitable organization, which featured L.A. Matheson teachers Gurpreet Bains and Annie Ohana as guest speakers. (Dhahan is also the founder of the Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature, with its youth award created in partnership with L.A. Matheson). “There’s a lot of collaboration that’s come with the relationships we’ve developed over the last few years with outside partners who are interested in supporting our students,” said Principal Kirsten Farquhar. “Initially, it was through Punjabi culture but then in learning from our teachers where there is lots of passion for Indigenous communities, that led to their idea for this summer fundraiser for the Aboriginal department.” The school’s Aboriginal program aims to improve the success of Indigenous students by advancing literacy; increasing awareness and understanding of aboriginal history, traditions and culture; enhancing students’ sense of belonging; and increasing the graduation rates of Indigenous students. It also works to increase Aboriginal content in the curriculum in a way that benefits all students. “Right now, the focus is interweaving the Indigenous ways of knowing into all classes and all subjects, but we’ve found we need to start with the student voice themselves,” said Vice Princi-

pal Sue Boucher. “We need to step up and create a school that is relevant, respectful, creates belonging, and that’s a lot about our work. We’ve come in this year to really try and ensure that we empower and create belonging and community.” One of the recent efforts to further recognize Indigenous history and culture has been Grade 12 student Skarlett Ford’s design for the school’s orange shirts, taking the L.A. Matheson Mustangs logo and incorporating Indigenous influences and symbols. “The idea of the Mustang with the war paint is supposed to signify strength,” said Ford. “In Indigenous cultures, the horse meant power, wealth and survival. Painting the horse was a sacred act, and in doing so, it was believed it would enhance power for the horse and rider, both physically and spiritually. With everything the victims and survivors of residential schools have overcome, it shows nothing but strength and power against residential schools.” Some of the symbolism in Ford’s design includes three stripes on the horse’s nose (meaning overthrowing a settlement), an arrow (victory), circles around the eyes (to strengthen its senses), and zigzags (representing speed and stealth). “The design simply came from the question, could we make our own T-shirt,” said Farquhar. “Annie immediately thought of Skarlett and she met with me once just to get an idea of what we were thinking. She did some research and then worked with Sue in terms of graphic design, and together, they made her vision come to life.” (By Jacob Zinn / Surrey Schools)

LAST week on Friday, at 6:15 p.m., an 82-year-old East Asian woman was shoved from behind near East King Edward Avenue and Fraser Street in Vancouver as she was walking to the bus stop. The 33-year-old suspect, who is not known to the victim, was arrested, and assault charges have been recommended

to Crown counsel. The victim is suffering from a sore arm. The VPD Hate Crimes investigator is reviewing the file. “These unprovoked assaults are extremely concerning,” said Constable Tania Visintin. “No one deserves to be treated with such blatant disrespect as they are going about their lives.”

Trudeau will name his cabinet this month PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau will announce his cabinet this month. Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday that the House of Commons will meet by the end of the fall. Trudeau said Chrystia Freeland will remain Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.

ON Thursday, Trudeau came under fire for flying to Tofino, B.C., for a family vacation even as the country marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. His official schedule had listed him in Ottawa for “private meetings,” but that was changed once the media reported that he was in

Tofino. Later, Trudeau tried to defend himself by tweeting: “I spent some time on the phone today with residential school survivors from across the country, hearing their stories and getting their advice on the path forward. By listening and learning, we can walk down that path

The exhibit discusses Indo-Fijian food, music, language, religion and informs the residents about local businesses and organizations which help further our culture in Canada. There are also artifacts from Fiji, videos, a slide show, and beautiful jewellery from local Indo-Fijian artist Sheetal Naickar. My father’s story is woven into the exhibit. He passed away of cancer in December 2020 but his story is similar to that of most other IndoFijian’s who left Fiji in search for a new home. I use his items in the exhibit to bring our culture to life. While my dad was in the hospital, I had the opportunity to finally discuss with him what I have been doing as an archaeologist for the past 20 years. Vancouver Police call it a weekend of chaos VANCOUVER Police officers were kept busy responding to several in-progress and priority calls this weekend, including a number of unprovoked assaults, and serious incidents involving weapons. In one incident, just after 4:30 a.m. on September 24, a man walked into the Tim Horton’s near Davie and Hornby streets and ordered a donut. As his order was being prepared, he pulled out a can of bear spray and sprayed the employee. The suspect was arrested for assault with a weapon and mischief over $5,000. In another incident, on Sunday, September 26, just before 6 p.m., officers saw two men fighting on the road near East Hastings and Columbia streets. The 29-year-old aggressor was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun upon arrest. Several firearm-related charges have been recommended to Crown counsel.

Surrey RCMP issues warning after victims lose over a million dollars to online romance scams SURREY RCMP say they received reports from 29 people who were victims of online romance scams between January and August, losing a total of $1,362,269. During the same period, 213 victims lost $22,463,510 throughout the Lower Mainland. A romance scam involves

any individual who uses false romantic intentions toward a victim in order to gain their trust and affection for the purpose of obtaining the victim’s money. Many romance scams begin via social media or online dating sites. Many of the reports in Surrey included a common

trend with victims being befriended online and over time being convinced to invest funds into fraudulent schemes, which included sending money via bitcoin accounts. When the victim became aware of the fraud, communication with the victim was cut off. Police say more people

than ever are going online to find friendships and relationships. If you seek companionship on the web, here are a few tips that may help protect you from being conned out of your money: * Google them Do a reverse image Google search – a quick and easy way to see if their photo has been copied from the internet. * Do not send money If your new online partner is already asking you for money to get their car fixed so they can come visit you, it’s a red flag.

* Beware of people who fall in love quickly If within the first few exchanges, the person seems to be pushing the relationship forward at a rapid pace without having even met you, it is a sign of catfishing. * Be cautious of people hiding their identity

If they seem serious, but strictly want to keep to written communication or phone calls (or if they frequently discuss meeting inperson but repeatedly have circumstances pop up to prevent them from doing so), there is a good chance they are hiding their identity. More information on romance scams and how to protect yourself can be found on the Canadian AntiFraud Centre website. Burnaby RCMP seize significant amount of drugs, unregistered restricted “ghost gun” BURNABY RCMP on Wednesday announced that its Drug Section had made a significant seizure of drugs and vehicles, as well as an unregistered restricted handgun, also known as a “ghost gun,” as part of a months-long drug trafficking investigation. On September 17, Burnaby RCMP’s Drug Section, with the assistance of several other Burnaby RCMP units, conducted four search warrants on residences in Burnaby and Vancouver. The warrants were executed simultaneously after a four-month investigation focusing on a Burnabybased drug trafficking organization. The investigation led to the seizure of an unregistered restricted handgun (“ghost gun”) with ammunition. The seizure is significant

because the untraceable nature of the gun components, which do not have serial numbers. Investigators also seized the following drugs from the four residences: * Kilograms of bulk and prepackaged cocaine * Methamphetamine * MDMA As well as thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, such as: * Xanax * Percocets * Oxycontin The actual contents of the

seized pills will be analyzed. Some of the drugs were stored in large safes inside a residence that is believed to have been operating as a stash-house for a dial-a-dope operation. Three people were arrested and charges will be forwarded to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. “The seizure of an untraceable gun is significant, as these individuals are associated to figures involved in the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj on Wednesday. “This enforcement action is a major disruption to this criminal organization and has the potential to disrupt drug operations across the Lower Mainland.”

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is a call to action: UBCIC THE Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) on Thursday said it is observing the first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. “UBCIC commemorates the fearless leadership and tireless efforts by Indian residential school survivors and First Nations like Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) who continue to seek justice, truth, and accountability for the missing and unidentified Indigenous children who never made it home,” the UBCIC said in a statement. It added: “On this first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, UBCIC encourages British Columbians and Canadians to reflect on the truth of the survivors’ experiences, and to acknowledge that this was a genocide, involving the forced removal of children from our families and Nations, placing more than 150,000 children in those institutions to try to “take the Indian out of the child.” Today is not only a day of remembering the truth and honouring the experiences of Survivors, but a time to be steadfast in our values that every child matters.” Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, UBCIC President, said: “In what has been an eye-opening, harrowing, and empowering year of reckoning and challenge, the discovery of the unmarked graves and burial sites of chil-

Since coming forward on May 27, 2021, to make public their efforts to learn about the truth of unmarked burials of children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School site, TteS, like other First Nations in BC and Canada with schools within their traditional territories, our people have the burden of the difficult work to confirm and identify hundreds of children who did not make it home. UBCIC’s expresses our outmost gratitude and raises our hands to TteS and all other caretaker First Nation communities across the country for helping forge a hard but necessary pathway to the truth in Canada about mass unmarked burial sites. They have made it known, loud and clear, that the time is now to document, investigate, and to hold those who operated the schools, especially Canada and the Catholic Church, accountable for the genocide inflicted upon First Nations in Canada.” Chief Don Tom, UBCIC Vice President, added: “The necessary work of decolonization is not going to be advanced by symbolic action and talk; Canada and BC must take action to hold themselves account-

Toxic illicit drugs kill 184 British Columbians in July Second-deadliest month on record in B.C. for drug toxicity

MORE than 1,200 people have died as a result of toxic drugs in the first seven months of 2021, according to the latest preliminary reporting from the BC Coroners Service. “The deaths of another 184 of our community members in July is a stark reminder of the tragic and unrelenting trajectory of this public health emergency,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coroner. “We know that the loss of each of these individuals leaves a devastated circle of family and

friends who are grieving the preventable death of a cherished loved one.” The 184 reported deaths represent the seconddeadliest month on record in B.C. for drug toxicity, only two fewer than the 186 deaths recorded in June 2020. In the first seven months of 2021, 1,204 suspected drug toxicity deaths have been recorded, the highest number experienced in B.C. from January through July in any calendar year, and 26% more than the previous high of 954

deaths recorded between January and July 2017. July 2021 is the 17th consecutive month in which more than 100 British Columbians have died as a result of the toxic drug supply. As in previous reporting, illicit fentanyl and its analogues continue to be significant drivers in this public health emergency, being detected in 86% of all illicit drug toxicity deaths in 2020 and 2021 to date. Post-mortem toxicology results show a continued increase in the number of deaths associated with extreme fentanyl concentrations, with 13% of preliminary toxicological tests noting concentrations greater than 50 micrograms per litre between April 2020 and July 2021. Since the toxic drug public health emergency was declared, the death rate due to toxic drugs in Biritsh Columbia has almost doubled from 20.4 per 100,000 in 2016 to 39.7 per 100,000 in 2021. The number of illicit drug toxicity deaths in July 2021 is equal to about 5.9 deaths per day. “Clearly, the scale of this public health emergency requires an urgent, co-ordinated and multifaceted health-system response,” Lapointe said. “Those at risk of dying come from all walks of life and live in every part of our province. BC Liberals demand action from Premier AS Premier John Horgan cuts funding for lifesaving naloxone kits, the latest illicit drug overdose report by the Coroners Service reveals the intensifying crisis with another tragic month of overdose deaths, said the BC Liberals on Wednesday. “It’s incredibly disheartening that month-aftermonth, B.C. continues to report record-breaking overdose deaths — with July 2021 now the second deadliest month for overdoses in B.C.’s history. Yet despite the situation across the province getting worse, we simply don’t see any urgency from the NDP on this file,” said Trevor Halford, BC Liberal Critic for Mental Health and Addictions. “Just last week we found out John Horgan cut funding to naloxone kits, which are essential for front-line emergency responders during this crisis. While the NDP keep trying to say this public health emergency is a top priority, their actions show otherwise.” Last week, MLA Halford wrote to Horgan calling for the funding for the life-saving naloxone

kits to be restored to police departments — and for months he has been calling for the Select Standing Committee on Health to be activated, so that all parties can work together on immediate actions to prevent further tragedy. The Premier has yet to respond directly to either request, said the BC Liberals. “Too many people continue to lose their lives to this crisis. It’s clear more action needs to be taken to meaningfully address this emergency and save lives,” said Halford. “The NDP needs to urgently commit to a plan for a comprehensive mental health and addictions system — one that isn’t just reactionary or offering services that are too little too late. How much longer will people in our province have to wait for John Horgan to take this worsening crisis seriously?” In July 2021, B.C. saw the second largest number of illicit drug toxicity deaths ever recorded, with 184 deaths, or 5.9 people lost to overdose every day, the BC Liberals noted.

solutions that reflects the breadth and scope of this crisis is urgently needed. This would include drug-checking services, safe consumption sites, meaningful access to life-saving safe supply and the implementation of evidence-based standards of practice for the treatment of problematic substance use. The heartbreak being experienced by another five or six more families in our province each and every day cannot continue.” Additional key preliminary findings are below. Data is subject to change as additional toxicology results are received: * 72% of those who have died as a result of suspected drug toxicity in 2021 were between 30 and 59, and 79% were male. * So far this year, 84% of illicit drug toxicity deaths have occurred inside (55% in private residences and 29% in other residences including social and supportive housing, SROs, shelters, hotels and other indoor locations) while 15% occurred outside in vehicles, sidewalks, streets, parks, etc. * The health authorities with the highest rates of death per 100,000 population are Vancouver Coastal (47.2) and Northern (45.6). * Deaths due to drug toxicity remain the leading cause of unnatural death in B.C.

IHIT seeking information on burned out pick-up in Maple Ridge homicide

ON Saturday, September 25, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Ridge Meadows frontline officers responded to a black pickup truck on fire

at the intersection of Park Lane and Vernon Trail in the 21700-block of 136 Avenue. Once the fire was extinguished and a body located,

the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called to investigate. The examination of the scene and area canvassing is still being completed by IHIT in partnership with the Ridge Meadows RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS), as well as the BC Coroners Service. The black pickup truck was determined to be a matte Black Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab. It may not have had a muffler; so, it would have been very loud as it travelled through Maple Ridge and the surrounding areas. (See photos of actual truck and stock image.) Homicide investigators are continuing their canvass in Maple Ridge for witnesses and CCTV in order to construct a timeline. They are looking for anyone with information, dashcam video or residential video of the vehicle in the time leading up to the fire. The areas of interest surround the 21700-block of

136 Avenue in the Silver Valley Area of Maple Ridge from approximately midnight to 2 a.m. in the early morning hours of September 25. (For area map, visit our website voiceonline.com.) The identification of the victim is still pending. There is insufficient information at this point to rule out or link this incident to the ongoing conflict

companies to 15%. An additional cap of 5% will also be extended for other related fees associated with use of the service, such as online ordering and processing fees. This will ensure companies cannot shift their delivery costs to other fees. Along with extending the food delivery service fee cap, government continues to work with the restaurant industry to ensure a safe dine-in experience with the launch of the BC Vaccine Card. More than three million people have signed up for the card since the requirement to show proof of vaccination at restaurants and other events and services went into place this month.

Anyone with information is requested to immediately contact IHIT investigators by contacting the IHIT Info-Line at 1-877-551-4448.

New plan makes it easier to switch from fossil fuels to made-in-B.C. clean electricity print. The plan also includes programs to reduce the time required to get customers connected to BC Hydro’s grid. As more customers increase the use of electricity, BC Hydro’s energy sales will increase, providing more revenue to cover its fixed system costs and helping keep rates low for everyone. BC Hydro estimates that if the electrification plan is fully realized, customer rates will be about 1.6% lower by 2026 compared to what they would be if there were no plan. “When we switch to using clean B.C electricity, we’re actually choosing water power to run our homes, vehicles and businesses instead of gasoline, diesel or natural gas, and

THE Government of British Columbia and BC Hydro have launched BC Hydro’s new five-year electrification plan. The plan will make it easier and more affordable for people to efficiently use more of B.C.’s clean electricity in place of fossil fuels to power their homes and buildings, businesses and vehicles, the Province said on Tuesday. “From heat waves to wildfires, we are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change. Here in B.C., we have accomplished a lot with North America’s most progressive plan to reduce carbon pollution – but the scale of the crisis means we must act with even more urgency,” said Premier John Horgan. “Working together with BC Hydro, we will help more people and businesses become less reliant on fossil fuels and use more affordable, made-in-B.C. hydroelectricity. As a clean-energy powerhouse, we have a huge opportunity to tackle the climate crisis while building a stronger and more resilient B.C. – for everyone.” BC Hydro’s Electrification Plan – A clean future powered by water – proposes new programs, and incentives to advance the switch from fossil fuels to clean electricity in homes and buildings, vehicles and fleets, business-

Not the first time that Congress is on the verge of a split New Delhi (IANS): The Congress has now become a divided house after the fresh attack launched by Kapil Sibal and the Congress workers protesting at Sibal’s residence which many leaders termed as hooliganism. This is not the first time there is a rift in the party. During Indira Gandhi’s time the Congress was split into two on November 12, 1969 over differences with K Kamaraj. Indira Gandhi was expelled from the Congress party for violating party discipline. She then formed the Congress (R) and a majority of the AICC members walked over to her side. A similar situation arose in March 1998 when in a CWC meeting Sitaram Kesri was removed and Sonia Gandhi was appointed president. Sharad Pawar, Tariq Anwar and PA Sangma walked out from the party and formed the NCP. Apart from this there was the revolt by VP Singh against Rajiv Gandhi and he became Prime Minister with the help of the BJP in 1989, then when Narasimha Rao became party president Madhav Rao Scindia formed the MP Congress, GK Moopanar the Tamil Manila Congress and ND Tiwari, Arjun Singh and Sheila Dikshit formed the Tiwari Congress only to merge when Sonia Gandhi became the party president. Mamata Banerjee formed the Trinamool Congress which is now the ruling party in West Bengal. The YSRCP is also a Congress off-shoot which is at the helm in Andhra Pradesh, as is the NR Congress in Puducherry. Once again the party is on the verge of a split with the G-23 calling for action on the Sibal

Kapil Sibal incident. But there is silence on the issue by the top leadership, which means it is unlikely that any action will be taken. The leaders have reminded the workers of Sibal’s contribution to the party in the courts and in parliament. Senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad termed the incident orchestrated. “I strongly condemn the orchestrated hooliganism @KapilSibal’s residence last night. He is a loyal Congressman fighting for the party both inside and outside the Parliament. Any suggestion from any quarter should be welcomed instead of suppressing, hooliganism is unacceptable.” he said. Likewise Manish Tewari and Vivek Tankha have also expressed their displeasure while Anand Sharma said he is shocked. Former Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh who showed his intent to leave the party alleged that seniors are insulted. Now the rift between former party president Rahul Gandhi’s loyalists and those who want

Rahul Gandhi reforms has widened with no sign of a truce, the reason being there is nobody who can bring both the factions to the table. A leader pointed out that “its ironic that Rahul Gandhi has himself become a party in the entire crisis rather he should have been the solution provider.” The leader said that due to bad advice and bad decisions of a coterie the party has reached such a low. Rahul Gandhi loyalists Ajay Maken and Randeep Singh Surjewala have attacked the leaders who are questioning the leadership. Amarinder Singh, who is at the exit door, too pointed out that “unfortunately, the seniors are being completely sidelined”, adding that this was not good for the party. He also condemned the rowdyism at Kapil Sibal’s house by Congress workers only because he had chosen to express views that were not palatable to the party leadership. The G-23 group says that they are not going to relent or leave the party but will be raising all the issues, which they think is better for the party.

Amarinder Singh to form ‘Punjab Vikas Party’: Sources

Amarinder Singh New Delhi (IANS): Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is soon going to announce a new party. According to sources, the name of Captain’s new party will be ‘Punjab Vikas Party’. According to sources, Amarinder Singh will convene a meeting of leaders close to him in a few days to consider the formation of his new party, which will include all the leaders of the anti-Sidhu faction.

Earlier, the Captain had said that his first goal is to defeat former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu. In such a situation, a strong contender will be fielded in the upcoming Assembly elections against Sidhu from his newlyformed party. Meanwhile, Singh will also contact all the farmers’ leaders of Punjab. He will also get in touch with small parties, sources said.

On Thursday, Amarinder Singh said: “I have been in politics for 52 years, but they treated me like this. At 10.30 Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked me to resign. I did not ask any question. At 4 o’clock I went to the Governor and submitted my resignation. If you still doubt me after 50 years... My credibility is at stake and there is no trust, then there is no point in being in the party.” After this statement, he announced that he was quitting the Congress. He made it clear that he was leaving the Congress, but will not join the BJP. He also said that he was deeply hurt by the humiliation that he had to face from the top leadership of the Congress. It is not the first time that Amarinder Singh has announced to quit the Congress party. In 1980 he won the Lok Sabha elections on the Congress symbol, but after the Operation Blue Star in 1984, he left the Congress to join the Akali Dal. He rejoined the Congress in 1998.

Punjab Chief Minister asks ministers to keep security bare minimum Chandigarh (IANS): Underlining the need to curb the VIP culture, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has asked the ministers to keep their security personnel at the barest minimum as he had already cut down on his own security. Channi said this initiative would not only be instrumental in deployment of extra security

personnel judiciously but also save the public from unnecessary inconvenience. In order to provide easy access to the elected representatives like sarpanches and municipal councillors it was also decided to issue an entry card from the office of concerned Deputy Commissioner or SDM and the holders of such cards would be allowed hassle-free entry in

the government offices and the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Emphasizing the need to prepare a comprehensive roadmap, the Chief Minister asked all the administrative secretaries and head of departments to prepare an action plan to implement their development projects and welfare schemes in a time-bound and holistic manner.

Congress in pathetic situation now, says ex-Punjab chief minister Chandigarh (IANS): Taking strong exception to Harish Rawat’s no-holds barred attack on him, former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday rejected the Congress Punjab in-charge’s claims and allegations, which he said were clearly prompted by the pathetic situation the party now found itself in the state after being on a winning spree for four and a half years. “Three weeks before stepping down as CM, I had offered my resignation to Sonia Gandhi but she had asked me to continue,” said Amarinder Singh, adding the humiliating manner in which he was pushed into resigning just hours before the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting, that was clearly convened to oust him, was a matter of public record.

“The world saw the humiliation and the insult heaped on me, and yet Rawat is making claims to the contrary,” he noted. He recalled that Rawat himself had publicly stated after meeting him that he was satisfied by his government’s track record on the 2017 poll promises. In fact, Rawat had categorically stated, as recently as September 1, that the 2022 elections would be fought under his leadership and the high command had no intention of replacing him, he pointed out. “So how can he now claim that the party leadership was dissatisfied with me, and if they were, then why did he deliberately keep me in the dark all this time?” he asked. Ridiculing Rawat’s remarks that he

Navjot Sidhu will be part of decision-making Chandigarh: A three-member panel comprising Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Navjot Singh Sidhu and AICC general secretary in-charge of Punjab affairs will resolve the impasse over official appointments and induction of “tainted” ministers. This decision was taken at a meeting between the CM, Sidhu and senior Congress leader Harish Chaudhary here on Thursday. The meeting lasted more than two hours. With Captain Amarinder Singh announcing that he would not be joining the BJP, the Congress high command appears to have decided on keeping Sidhu in the loop while picking a replacement for Advocate-General APS Deol. A panel of names has been sent to the UPSC for appointment of a new Director General of Police. Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota is holding the additional charge of DGP for now. Sources said Sidhu was keen on getting Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, who headed the SIT probing drug charges against a senior police official. The three-member panel would meet at least once a week to discuss key government decisions and appointments, indi-

Charanjit Singh Channi cating that Sidhu would be involved in the decision-making exercise. There was no consensus on replacing ‘tainted’ ministers. Sidhu was reported to be keen on inducting MLA Surjit Dhiman in the Cabinet. Sidhu later consulted his aides, including Pargat Singh, Dr Raj Kumar Verka and Kuljit Nagra.

seemed to be under pressure, the former chief minister said the only pressure he had been under for the past few months was that of his own loyalty to the Congress, because of which he continued to tolerate insult after insult. “If the party did not intend to humiliate me then why was Navjot Singh Sidhu allowed to openly criticise and attack me on social media and other public platforms for months? Why did the party give the rebels, led by Sidhu, a free hand in undermining my authority? Why was no cognizance given to the uninterrupted spree of electoral wins I handed over to the party through the four and a half years I was in the saddle?” he asked. Amarinder Singh asked why the Congress

was allowing Sidhu even now to hold the party to ransom and continue to dictate terms. “What is the pressure he exerts on the party leadership that they are so defenceless against him and are allowing him to have his way even at the cost of the Congress’ future in Punjab?” he asked. Reacting to Rawat’s comment regarding his secular credentials, Amarinder Singh said even his worst critics and enemies could not doubt his integrity in this regard. “But I am no longer surprised that a senior and seasoned Congress leader like Rawat is questioning my secular credentials. It is quite evident that I am no longer trusted and respected in the party that I have served loyally all these years,” he added.

No intention to continue in Congress, but not joining BJP: Amarinder Singh New Delhi (IANS): Scotching speculation to the contrary, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday made it clear he was not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but had no intention of continuing in the Congress either, which he said was going downhill with senior leaders completely ignored and not given a voice. Denying any move to join the BJP, Amarinder Singh said he would leave the Congress where he had been utterly humiliated and was not trusted. “I will resign, will not stay in the party,” he said, adding that he was still thinking through his options in the interest of Punjab, whose security was the predominant priority for him. “I will not be treated in this humiliating manner. I will not take such insults,” he said, adding that his principles and beliefs do not allow him to stay in the Congress. Terming the senior Congressmen as the thinkers, who were critical to the future of the party, the former Chief Minister said the younger leadership should be promoted to implement the plans, which the senior leaders are best equipped to formulate. Unfortunately, the seniors were being completely sidelined, he said, adding this was not good for the party. He also condemned the attack on Kapil Sibal’s house by Congress work-

ers only because he had chosen to express views that were not palatable to the party leadership. Expressing hope that Punjab would vote for the future of the state, he said his experience showed that the people of Punjab tend to vote for a single party or force, irrespective of the number of parties in the fray. Misgovernance in Punjab would give Pakistan the opportunity to create trouble in the state and in the country, he said, adding that his meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval Thursday morning focused around this issue. Amarinder Singh had raised security concerns with Home Minister Amit Shah too, along with the farmers’ issue, during his meeting with the latter on Wednesday. Taking a dig at those who undermine the growing Pakistani threat in Punjab, he said that such people were playing into the hands of anti-India forces by being in denial mode. “They (Pak-backed elements) are killing our soldiers every day. They are pushing weapons into the state through drones. How can we overlook these dangers,” he added. Reiterating his opinion on Navjot Singh Sidhu, Captain Amarinder described him as a mere crowd puller who does not know how to carry his team along.

Amarinder Singh calls on Home Minister Shah, discusses ‘farm issues’ New Delhi (IANS): Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday evening. The meeting lasted for around an hour at Shah’s official residence here. On Tuesday, IANS had first ran the story — “‘Upset’ Amarinder likely to meet Shah, his office denies”. Since then, speculation was doing the rounds about a likely meeting between the two leaders. However, Singh’s media advisor Raveen Thukral had then denied the former meeting Shah and BJP chief J.P. Nadda, saying he’s on a personal visit to Delhi to meet ‘some friends’. On Wednesday, Singh tweeted after the meeting with Shah: “Met Union Home Minister @ AmitShah in Delhi. Discussed the prolonged farmers’ agitation against #FarmLaws & urged him to resolve the crisis urgently with

Amit Shah and Amarinder Singh.

repeal of the laws & guarantee MSP, besides supporting Punjab in crop diversification.” Sources said that both the leaders discussed several issues, including national security, farmers’ agitation and the current political situation in Punjab. The BJP is ready to welcome him, saying Singh is a nationalist and all nationalists are welcomed in the party. “Amarinder Singh is nationalist to the core and he always stood for nationalist issues. Apart from his political agenda, he always stood for nationalist issues. All nationalists are welcome to meet the Home Minister. On one hand, the Congress has insulted a nationalist solider and on the other, it inducted a member of ‘tukde tukde gang’. Our doors are open for all the nationalists,” BJP national spokesperson R.P.

Singh said. The BJP leaders, however, are tight-lipped about Singh joining the party. A party leader said that the decision, if any, will be taken by the central leadership and it will be communicated to everyone at an appropriate time. When asked whether Singh will join the BJP, the party’s national general secretary and Punjab in-charge Dusyant Gautam told IANS, “Let’s see. All those who talk in the national interest are welcome to join the party.” Sources said that the main agenda of discussion during Wednesday’s meeting was the ongoing farmers’ protest in the Punjab. “Singh can play an important role in pacifying the farmers, who are protesting for almost a year against the three farm laws. He can also convince them to end the ongoing protest,” the sources said.

Punjab Chief Minister Channi includes six new faces in Cabinet Chandigarh (IANS): Ahead of Assembly elections slated in February-March 2022, new Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, expanded his council of ministers on Sunday with induction of 15 ministers, including six first-timers. Several ministers from the previous Amarinder Singh government were retained including both women ministers, Aruna Chaudhary, who is related to Channi, and Razia Sultana, a prominent Muslim face.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office to the new ministers at a simple ceremony held in the lawns of Raj Bhavan. Two-time MLAs Pargat Singh (Jalandhar Cantonment), Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, 43, (Gidderbaha) and Gurkirat Singh Kotli, 48, (Khanna), four-time MLA Kaka Randeep Singh Nabha, 54, (Amloh) and three-time MLAs Raj Kumar Verka, 58, (Amritsar-West) and Sangat Singh Gilzian, 68 (Urmar) were the new faces in the Cabinet.

Verka is a Valmiki community leader, while Gilzian represents the other backward classes. The others are Jat Sikhs. Two-time MLA Kuljit Nagra (Fatehgarh Sahib) was a frontrunner for a Cabinet berth. His name was dropped at the last moment despite his proximity with Rahul Gandhi. However, Nagra and Gilzian were recently picked as Working Presidents of the state unit. Pargat Singh, an Akali Dal rebel, is the hockey Olympian-turned-bureaucrat-turned-politician. He was appointed as the state General Secretary. Kotli and Warring began their political career by working as student union leaders. Kotli’s grandfather, the late Beant Singh, was the Chief Minister from 1992 to 1995. His father Tej Parkash Singh served as the state Transport Minister. Handpicked by Rahul Gandhi, young leader Warring made his debut in the Assembly by defeating then People’s Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Singh Badal, who is now in the Congress, from Gidderbaha in 2012. He was the Indian Youth Congress president in 2014. Five ministers from the previous Amarinder Singh Cabinet were dropped. They were Balbir Sidhu, Gurpreet Kangar, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, and Sundar Sham Arora. However, Brahm Mohindra (six-time MLA),

Manpreet Badal (five-time MLA), Tript Rajinder Bajwa (four-time MLA), as well as Chaudhary, Razia Sultana, and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria (all three-time MLAs), Bharat Bhushan Ashu (two-time MLA), and Vijay Inder Singla (first time MLA) were retained. Mohindra, Singla and Ashu, the prominent Hindu faces, are known for their proximity to Amarinder Singh. Shiromani Akali Dal rebel Badal, who was the Finance Minister in the previous Amarinder Singh government and in the previous SAD government led by Prakash Singh Badal, played a crucial role for getting Channi at the helm owing to his proximity with Rahul Gandhi. He is likely to retain the same portfolio. Former Irrigation Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh made a surprise comeback after four years despite objections raised by at least six legislators. He was inducted after at the expense of Nagra. A minister in Amarinder Singh’s Cabinet, he had stepped down after an alleged scam regarding allotment of sand mines. Channi, 58, was sworn in as Chief Minister on September 20 along with his two deputies — Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and O.P. Soni, both ministers in previous Council of Ministers. Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister on September 18 after months of political tussle with state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, saying he stepped down as he felt “humiliated”.

Navjot Sidhu once again exhibited ‘shifty’ character: Amarinder Singh New Delhi (IANS): Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said on Tuesday that Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief within two months of taking over the vital post has proved beyond doubt that the cricketer-turned-politician is an “unstable” man, who could not be relied upon to lead the ruling party, especially in a border state like Punjab. Terming Sidhu’s resignation as sheer drama, Amarinder Singh said the move suggests that his former Cabinet colleague is preparing the ground to quit the Congress and join hands with some other party in the run-up to the Assembly polls scheduled next year. “I have been saying all along that this man is unstable and dangerous, and cannot be entrusted with the task of running Punjab,” said Amarinder Singh, adding that Sidhu had also proved to be absolutely incompetent

months of taking over as the PPCC chief, Sidhu has once again exhibited his “shifty” character. “I’ve known this boy since his childhood and he has been a loner and can never be a team player,” said Amarinder Singh, recalling how the cricketer had deserted the Indian team in 1996 in England. “That’s what his real character is,” said the former Chief Minister. Describing Sidhu as a “flamboyant” speaker, Amarinder Singh said what he speaks in public meetings or rallies may make people laugh but it’s all froth, with no substance. “People don’t vote for buffoonery,” he said, adding that no one takes him (Sidhu) seriously. Replying to a question that Sidhu was apparently upset with the inclusion of certain ministers in Charanjit Singh Channi’s Cabinet, Amarinder Singh said that the PPCC chief apparently

wanted to run the government by remote control. “Cabinet formation is the prerogative of the Chief Minister, so why should Sidhu interfere in it,” he asked. On Sidhu’s claim that he was quitting as the party chief on matters of principle, Amarinder Singh said, “What principles is he talking about? He’s only making grounds to quit the Congress. You just wait and see, he will join hands with some other party very soon.” Replying to a question, the former Chief Minister said that the Congress high command should immediately accept Sidhu’s resignation and appoint some competent man in his place. When asked if he would back former PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar for the job, Amarinder Singh said, “He (Jakhar) is very competent and had performed exceedingly well as the party chief.”

Punjab waives pending electricity bills of 5.5 million defaulters Chandigarh, Sep 29 (IANS): Amid the turmoil within the ruling Congress party and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to Punjab, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday announced the waiving of pending electricity bills of 55 lakh [5.5 milliom] defaulters, covering 80 per cent of the total consumers. It will put a burden of Rs 1,200 crore [Rs 12,000 million] on the state exchequer. Channi told the media that the Cabinet decided

to waive pending electricity bills of all defaulters having connection up to 2 KW. “It is a major relief for the common man,” the Chief Minister, who reiterated the government won’t indulge in corruption nor let anyone do it. The decision will benefit consumers in rural and urban areas. But the Chief Minister added: “The policy will apply only to the previous electricity bills that are pending. From now onwards, the consumers would be liable for the outstanding.”

Channi said committees at tehsil level would be formed to handle old bill waiver cases and verify the beneficiaries. The Chief Minister announced a mechanism soon to end the sand mafia by bringing a new

policy on mining. He said that as sought by the party high command, the government is appointing a dedicated team of public prosecutors and lawyers to handle sensitive cases like sacrilege.

Invite farmers for talks without precondition: Sukhbir to PM Chandigarh (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene immediately and invite farmers for talks without any preconditions to revoke the three agriculture laws. Felicitating the farmers for the complete shutdown on Monday, Badal said this should show the government that the peo-

ple of the entire country stood solidly behind the farmers. He also urged the Prime Minister to convene a special session of Parliament to revoke the three laws that have led the country to the impasse. The former Deputy Chief of Punjab reiterated his party’s total support to the cause of farmers.

Windsor, onTario: The innovative 4xe plug-in hybrid propulsion system in the Jeep® Wrangler that delivers nearly silent driving and enhanced off-road capability has been voted a Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems winner in its first year of eligibility. A hit with consumers and lauded by media since its launch in early 2021, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe provides 35 kilometres (21 miles) of zero-emission all-electric range and is rated at 4.8 Le/100 km (59 MPGe). Within weeks of reaching dealerships, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe became one of the topthree selling PHEV in Canada for the second quarter of 2021. “This is advanced, environmentally friendly technology that seamlessly fits into anyone’s daily life,” said Micky Bly, Stellantis Head of Propulsion Systems. “Then you take the Jeep Wrangler 4xe off road and it hits you that electrified propulsion and nearly silent running are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You won’t want to come off the trails. “Delivering a powertrain that manages torque from three sources and loses noth-

ing from the Jeep Wrangler’s legendary capability is a challenge. We are energized by the response from our customers as well as the recognition from the Wards editors. We’re not finished, there is more to come,” Bly said.

Consumers are driving the Jeep Wrangler 4xe on roads in the United States, Canada, Europe and China. In North America, 4xe propulsion is available on the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, Rubicon and High Altitude models.

“The all-new 400-volt plug-in hybrid system makes the Jeep Wrangler 4xe a whole lot more efficient and it compromises nothing on the trail, in its rugged, off-road element,” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto Managing Editor. “And on the highway, you need to really pay attention to notice when the 4-cylinder turbo shuts down and you’re sailing along in batteryelectric mode. The Jeep Wrangler has always been about crossing difficult terrain to enjoy the great outdoors. With the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep loyalists can feel good about helping preserve the great outdoors as well.” “The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a clear example that you can have the best of both worlds: legendary Jeep capability combined with an electrified, ecofriendly package that allows you to enjoy nature in almost absolute silence,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer. “The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is already a success around the globe and shortly after launch, it became the number one selling PHEV in America, showcasing that 4xe is the new 4x4.”

Timely. Provocative. Engaging. Those words effectively describe Night Raiders, an exciting new drama from Elevation Pictures now at the Vancouver International Film Festival Just what is the most valuable resource? Most people would say gold. Well, with the exception of megalomaniac Auric Goldfinger who James Bond (I.e. Sean Connery) dealt with so effectively back in the day the most precious resource has to be children - the lifeline of the future. Kids are definitely an endangered species in an ominous new world that is brought to life in a terrifying way in Night Raiders. An exceptional tale tracks the plight of two women having to stay alive in a new world order where the state’s might is unchallenged and unchecked. Displaying all the right moves as Nissan - a mother on a mission - to protect and preserve her young daughter Wawasee, is Elle-Maija Fairweatners. Equally impressive as her

young daughter who must endure a militaristic style indoctrination to assimilate is Brooklyn LetexierHart. To me there is a real sense of danger and desperation in this movie. It has a haunting atmosphere grounded in reality as we have a truly repressive regime trying to shut down any semblance of dissent. Desperate times require desperate action and its great to see how two gutsy women try to find each other and stay alive amid

very dangerous and powerful political forces. For more reviews please visit my website moviereviewssite.com

The BCREA Nowcast estimate of provincial economic growth (expressed as year-overyear growth in real GDP) for July 2021 is 6.9 per cent. For comparison, year-over-year growth in the Canadian economy in June was 4.7 per cent. We have also included a preliminary estimate for August 2021 of 6.7 per cent. The BCREA Nowcast estimate of average growth in the BC economy through the first 8 months of 2021 is estimated at 7 per cent. Growth of provincial GDP is a key indicator of economic activity, but provincial GDP data is only available annually and with a considerable delay. That’s why we developed the

BCREA Nowcast - a tool for tracking monthly growth in the BC Economy. The Nowcast compiles monthly economic data into one easy to understand number, expressed as the year-over-year growth in the BC economy. As the underlying economic data is released with a one- or two-month lag, our estimates for monthly growth will also lag real-time by two months (e.g., estimated growth in January will be published at the end of March). There are no adjustments to the model estimate except for those due to revisions to the underlying data.

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

39

The other pandemic – A challenge to news media

LAST week’s column claimed, “Wars are too important to be left to generals.” And “the type 2 diabetes pandemic is too important to be left to doctors.” We asked whether there was a difference between millions of North Americans dying quickly of COVID-19 and millions of people dying slowly of diabetes. In this week’s column, we challenge media outlets to help doctors fight this other pandemic that is having a disastrous effect on our health care system. Consider what’s happened for 20 months now. Broadcasters in North America could hardly wait to tell us night after night about the daily number of deaths from COVID-19. But what they have not mentioned is that 1 in 10 North Americans now have type 2 diabetes – in effect, that people are sick and many more are on soon to follow. Unfortunately, the majority are not aware of the terrible future they face as diabetes takes its toll. We should not need to spoon feed the overwhelming mountains of data to journalists. The evidence is in plain sight to all. A visit to any supermarket quickly shows what’s happening to society. Overweight and morbidly obese shoppers are buying cheaper, easier, poor-quality food heavily marketed by powerful producers. Obesity has been setting the stage for type 2 diabetes for decades. The blunt fact is that 65 years ago 95 percent of diabetes was due to being born with defective genes and just 5 percent to obesity and lifestyle factors. Today, what a reversal! Just 5 percent of diabetes is due to defective genes and 95 percent to obesity. This is not an act of God. Defective genes do not proliferate so speedily. But human behaviour and faulty diets have changed over the years. Few people are getting enough exercise. Why ask for media’s help? Doctors have been successful finding cures for diseases in the past. But this current challenge goes well beyond the capabilities of the medical profession. Despite a wealth of medical literature, hundreds of books and weight loss programs, and the tragic consequences of obesity, still the problem escalates. Some predict that by 2050, rather than 1 in 10 people with type 2 diabetes, it will be 1 in 3! Since the cost of care is now $230 billion annually, this will trigger the most devastating economic and health wreck the world has ever witnessed. Can it be solved? The medical profession cannot do it alone. But if the media issued an urgent alert, even a fraction of the magnitude of the COVID coverage, there might be hope. Since COVID struck, the media has been unrelenting in hammering out news of the more than 600,000 U.S. citizens alone who have died. But according to the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S., there are 34 million diabetics in the U.S. and another 88 million have pre-diabetes. The World Heath Organization reports that diabetes is three times more deadly than COVID-19. Worldwide 463 million people have diabetes and about 4.2 million die of it every year. Media giants in the U.S and Canada are all shooting at the wrong target. There’s a larger killer in our midst. Unlike the CO-

VID-19 virus which will eventually fade away or be managed, type 2 diabetes will continue to creep forward, causing millions to suffer from amputations, blindness, kidney failure and other severe complications day after day, gradually killing far more and costing all of us dearly. Will big media houses accept the challenge to cover this other pandemic? We want to know. (Part three of a six-part series.) Visit www.docgiff.com. For comments, contact-us@docgiff.com.
