Taxi driver Jashan Singh Sangha honoured by RCMP for coming to stabbing victim’s aid in Whistler TAXI driver Jashan Singh Sangha, 25, was honoured by Whistler RCMP last week at a ceremony for coming to the aid of a stabbing victim earlier this year. Sangha used his turban to apply it to a life-threatening wound to the victim’s lower extremities to stop the bleeding and then rushed him to the local hospital in his taxi. Whistler RCMP Staff-Sgt. Paul Hayes said: “Without hesitation Mr. Sangha came to the victim’s aid. Without concern for himself, Mr. Sangha went above and beyond to assist this individual and showed great care and compassion for a member of our community. I am very appreciative of Mr. Sangha’s actions that day.” On February 11 at about 2:30 a.m., there was a fight in the 4200-block of Village Square in Whistler in which three males were stabbed, one of whom received life-threatening injuries. RCMP officers quickly identified and arrested three male suspects in their early 20’s who reside in the Lower Mainland and are known to police. Jashan, who happened to be in the area, observed two males and a female in their 20’s who appeared to be in a state of panic. He told The VOICE that he rolled down his window to inquire and heard the

Jashan Singh Sangha flanked by Whistler RCMP officers. Photo submitted female informing someone on her cell phone that there had been a stabbing incident. “So I got out of my cab and asked them about it,” he said. They showed him the wound one of the males had sustained. “It was pretty big,” he added. Jashan immediately took off his turban and applied it to the wound in order to stem the bleeding. He said that he didn’t know how long the police and ambulance would take to arrive there and the local hospital wasn’t too far away. So he told them to get into his cab and he drove straight to the hospital. That

helped save the victim’s life. Jashan, who came from India in December 2012 on a student visa, works for Squamish Taxi and lives in Squamish. He is very proud of his parents. His father – Sardar Jagtar Singh Sangha – is a lecturer in the male wing of Guru Nanak National College in Punjab’s Nakodar. His mother – Sardarni Sukhwinder Kaur Sangha – is the principal of the female wing of the same institution. Now, his parents are very proud of him.

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday hailed the Centre’s decision to scrap the controversial blacklist, which was totally discriminatory towards the Sikh community, in response to the state’s persistent demand and efforts. Conceding the demand, the Centre has virtually done away with the list, that comprised 314 Sikh foreign nationals, with only two names of men not connected with Punjab now left on it. The Central government has also discontinued the practice of maintenance of local adverse lists by the Indian missions in various countries. In a statement, the Chief Minister thanked the Central government for finally conceding the state’s demand for more or less revoking the list, thus making Sikh foreign nationals eligible for availing visa services to visit their families in India and reconnect with their roots. His government, said Amarinder Singh, had worked actively with the Centre for scrapping the list, created by the Central government and its agencies in 2016. Every Sikh had the right to visit Punjab and the Darbar Sahib, including those who had gone astray in the surcharged atmosphere of the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in the wake of the Operation Bluestar and the anti-

Amarinder Singh

Sikh riots, said the Chief Minister. He said the decision would go a long way in bringing those members of the Sikh community, who had fled the nation as a result of the circumstances, to connect with their families back home. The creation of the blacklist had been a regressive move, which needed to be corrected in the larger interest of the community, whose contribution to the growth and development of India, and the nations in which they were settled, was exemplary, said Amarinder Singh. By removing all the 312 India-origin Sikhs from the list, the government had accepted his government’s reasoning that cutting off the Sikh foreign nationals from their roots would only lead to their further alienation, which would serve no good to the country, he added.

Is Trudeau proposing to introduce capital gains tax on sale of primary residences? “This is extraordinarily bad policy that will hurt Canadian families” CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Andrew Scheer in a letter dated August 26 to his supporters claimed that Toronto Liberal MP Adam Vaughan, who was the government’s specially appointed advisor on housing and urban affairs, “wants to introduce a capital gains tax on the sale of primary residences.” Scheer said it was “an alarming proposal that has leaked out from inside Justin Trudeau’s government, one that would hurt homeowners and make life less affordable for families across Canada.” Under this new policy, there would be a new sliding scale tax rate applied to capital gains on home sales: a 50% tax after one year of ownership, 25% after two years, 15% after three years, 10% after four years and 5% after five years.”

Andrew Scheer and Justin Trudeau. Scheer said: “This is extraordinarily bad policy that will hurt Canadian families. It won’t control housing

prices. It will just make the dream of home ownership more difficult for those who can already least afford it.” He added: “This new tax will affect people who move for a new job, people who buy a home because they need a place to live right away, but are hoping to find a larger permanent residence, people who have a sudden change in family status because of marriage, divorce or children. There are many reasons for someone to buy a house and sell it in less than five years, and they shouldn’t be punished for it.” Scheer said Trudeau has already raised taxes on 81% of Canadian middle-class families by an average of $840, and warned Canadians that this latest tax hike could be much more costly.

Kater officially applies for BC-wide ride-hailing licence Kater outlines details of Transportation Network Service (TNS) application KATER Technologies Inc. on Monday announced it has officially put its hat in the ring and applied for a ride-hail license to operate in every region of British Columbia. “We have outlined a number of measures that will offer the much needed service to BC consumers while demonstrating a commitment to the environment, safe transportation of passengers and fair treatment for drivers.” said Kater CEO Scott Larson. “As one of the last North American areas without ride-hailing, BC has an opportunity to introduce the service that is desperately needed in the right way. Our goal is to serve the escalating consumer demand in British Columbia while mitigating some of the inherent downsides that other jurisdictions have witnessed from incumbent ride hailing providers. Good Corporate Social Responsibility means taking the lead in minimizing congestion, integrating ride hailing with public transit and providing services to those that need wheelchair accessible transportation” added Larson. “As a local business, we want what is best for BC.” The key measures are: 1. Kater will include approximately 250 wheelchair accessible vehicles

in its network. All citizens, regardless of circumstance, should have access to ride-hailing and transportation services. 2. Kater strongly believes in providing a living wage and fair compensation for drivers. Assuming that the PTB approves its pricing model, its drivers are projected to earn at least $25 for every hour that they are active on the Kater platform. 3. Kater will provide additional financial incentives for drivers that operate both accessible and hybrid or electric vehicles. 4. Kater is seeking a license to operate not only in the Lower Mainland but throughout the entire province – starting this winter in Metro Vancouver,

Victoria, Nanaimo and the Okanagan region and then incrementally expanding to all other regions over the next 12 months. 5. Kater is proposing pricing at a minimum of 90% of current taxi rates and a maximum of 200%. This attends to consumer concerns over surge pricing and addresses concerns over equal economic conditions for existing stakeholders. 6. In order to encourage drivers not to abandon service in the suburbs during peak hours, which has been a concern in other jurisdictions, Kater will provide location-based pricing and incentives to drivers to maintain suburban service throughout the day. 7. To address local government concerns over congestion and air pollution, Kater will self-regulate supply and will put no more than 2,000 cars on the road at any given time, until data shows a need for additional vehicles 8. Kater intends to integrate other forms of transportation into its service model so as to offer seamless consumer options and guard against a significant diminishment in public transit use. 9. Kater will support existing industry participants and offer consumer choice by integrating taxis into its platform.

In addition to applying for ride-hail licenses, Kater has officially integrated the back-end technology required to run a successful Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform. This will allow users to choose available transport options which best suit their mobility needs. In the coming days, users will be able to book a Kater car, Kateroke or Kater Spa and, when no Kater vehicles are available, traditional taxis. Taxis available for order through Kater are owned and operated by existing operators and will be available in the Lower Mainland, Victoria and Kelowna during a beta testing phase, to anyone who has downloaded the app. Larson added, “We are committed to providing Vancouver, and the entirety of British Columbia, with as many mobility options as possible and the integration of MaaS technology, with taxi integration into the Kater app, is the first step towards achieving this goal. The next step will be the integration of traditional ride-hailing service and public transportation options when Provincial regulations come into effect” this fall.” Instagram: @ridekater Twitter: @ridekater Facebook: Facebook.com/ridekater/

AS the federal election gets underway, it appears that the Liberals under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are most likely to form the next government. The vote takes place on October 21. According to the latest Nanos Tracking Poll (September 6), when Canadians were asked whether they would consider voting for each of the federal parties, 48.7 per cent said they would consider voting Liberal, while 39.3 per cent of said they would consider voting Conservative. One in three (36.2%) would consider voting NDP, 35.4 per cent would consider voting Green, 10.2 per cent would consider voting for the People’s Party and 31 per cent would consider voting for the Bloc Quebecois. Nanos had Trudeau as the preferred choice as Prime Minister at 33.6 per cent of Canadians, followed by Conservative Party Leader

Andrew Scheer (22.7), Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (8.1%), NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh (7.4%) and People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier (2.4%). Twenty-four per cent of Canadians were unsure whom they preferred. Close to half of Canadians (47.2%) believe Trudeau has the qualities of a good political leader, while 39 per cent believe Scheer has the qualities of a good political leader. Four in 10 (39.2%) believe May has the qualities of a good political leader, while 28.4 per cent say the same about Singh. One in seven (15.7%) believe Bernier has the qualities of a good political leader, while 27.8 per cent said BQ Leader YvesFrancois Blanchet has the qualities of a good political leader (Quebec only). Scheer’s ‘can you trust Justin Trudeau?’ strategy will really not help his party

as polls have shown that Canadians aren’t obsessed with the SNC-Lavalin scandal. Also, Scheer’s personality has been a big drawback for the Conservatives. He just fails to inspire Canadians. On the other hand, the NDP remains far behind in the polls and can only hope to get enough seats so that they can support a possible Liberal minority government and bargain with it. However, NDP supporters are quite likely to desert their party once again to make sure that Scheer’s Conservatives do not form the next government. The first leaders’ debate took place on Thursday night in Toronto where Maclean’s/ CityTV held a televised debate. However, Trudeau decided not to participate in it. But Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May took part in it.

According to the Globe and Mail, the reason why Trudeau doesn’t want to have too many debates is that the Liberals “want to limit their leader’s exposure to political peril by curtailing the length of the campaign and depriving the other party leaders of too many occasions to share the stage. That’s a decision made by a one-term incumbent government that sits astride a strong economy and sees itself as a front-runner, but whose leader is vulnerable to attacks related to ethical lapses.” The Liberals had 177 MPs in the 338-seat House of Commons. The others: the Conservatives had 95 MPs, the NDP had 39 MPs, the Bloc Quebecois had 10 MPs, and the Green Party had two MPs. Also, there was one People’s Party of Canada MP, one Cooperative Commonwealth Federation MP, eight independents and five vacant seats.

THIS week, Vancouver Sun again disgraced itself by publishing a putrid op-ed article attacking Canada’s diversity. Vancouver Sun’s own editorial staff condemned that piece of garbage in their tweets – and Editor in Chief Harold Munro had to issue an apology! But there is that Vancouver Sun racist columnist who is always publishing negative stuff about non-white Canadians – it’s time he retired or got kicked out! Writer Mark Hecht, a geography instructor at Calgary’s Mount Royal University who wrote the op-ed article, says he was inspired to submit to the Sun because of similar writings on diversity by columnist Douglas Todd. So what was Sun Editor in Chief Harold

I do not endorse any thinking or writing that does. Nor do our reporters/ columnists. It was a trashy piece. I’m embarrassed. But it’s not us. Tiffany Crawford: I agree 100 per cent with what Cassidy said. It has been a very frustrating day for us in this newsroom. Stephanie Ip: And then my own news outlet goes and prints a piece of hateful, harmful garbage like that and calls it an “op-ed.” I’m glad I’m not at work today because I can’t seem to stop crying. That piece, which has been pulled online but is still in today’s print edition of @VancouverSun, is not representative of our newsroom, of the level of work I know myself and my colleagues are capable of. Postmedia, get it together. Rob Shaw: 1. What a complete pile of absolute garbage that op-ed is. 2. I have no idea why it was published. IMO it never should have been and is inexcusably wrong. 3. Sun. Feels terrible to think of how that kind of bullshit causes real harm to our readers and people in our community. Lori Culbert: Driving home from my son’s Hockey game tonight, the 8:30 news led with Bianca’s big win, hurricane Dorian, and then the racist column published today in the newspaper where I work. That is gutting for me to hear. Much worse to the people we’ve insulted with those senseless words. To the people my newspaper has hurt, I offer my deepest apologies. I had nothing to do with that column or its publication, but I still feel the need to say sorry. Joanne Lee-Young: I stand with @cassidyolivier @nickeagland @kbolan @robshaw_vansun and others who have already spoken. I too am speechless and embarrassed. It’s not us. We work hard to do stories and reporting that r the opposite of what that piece is calling for. Kim Bolan: We were all in the newsroom working hard today to tell stories we hope our community cares about. None of us had anything to do with this. If I knew this was being published, I would have said something. And my co-workers would have done so too. THE Vancouver Sun carried a rebuttal piece to Hecht’s garbage in Monday’s newspaper. I personally know many current and former Vancouver Sun and Province journalists and they are some of the best in the profession. They are anything but racist. However, there has always been a racist slant in these newspapers because of some top guys who either just don’t understand what multiculturalism is or just don’t want to accept it – and they ruin the great work that others have been doing all these decades!

Police confirm Tuesday’s homicide victim was Justin Haevischer Victim – who was first identified as Red Scorpion member Justin Lee Haevischer by the media – was known to police and had ties to gang activity THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Thursday announced that Tuesday’s homicide victim was Justin Haevischer, 33, and requested public assistance to further its investigation. On September 10, shortly after 8 p.m., Haevischer was shot to death outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Langley at 264th Street and 56th Avenue. Langley RCMP frontline officers were called to the restaurant for multiple reports of a shooting. They found a man in his early thirties outside the restaurant with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at scene.

Justin Haevischer At approximately 8:30 p.m., the Abbotsford Police Department received a report of a vehicle on fire in the 27900-block of Montesina Avenue. The vehicle is a black SUV and is believed to be linked to the earlier shooting. Forensic specialists will be conducting a full examination of the SUV and anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Delta to request that PTB conducts “comprehensive, fulsome public consultation process” regarding ride-hailing firms DELTA Councillor Lois Jackson wants the Council to request that the Passenger Trans-

portation Board “facilitates a comprehensive, fulsome public consultation process wherein

BC’s cities, municipalities, regional districts, public transit agencies, disabled persons’ advocacy organizations, and the general public are invited and enabled to provide their views as to the terms, restrictions and requirements that should be included in operating licences that are issued to ride-hailing firms by the PTB.” Jackson, who was mayor of Delta, will be presenting a motion on September 16 to the Council in this regard. The motion justifies the call for a public consultation process by noting: “Whereas British Columbia’s Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) has sole responsibility for deciding whether or not individual ride-hailing firms (that have submitted applications to the PTB) will be granted licenses to operate in BC; “And whereas on August 19, 2019, the PTB issued a brand new Operational Policy: “Introduction of Transportation Network Services, 2019”, that, if implemented, will allow ride-hailing firms to compete against British Columbia’s taxi

RCMP interviews Wilson-Raybould in SNC-Lavalin case JODY Wilson-Raybould, the former justice minister and attorney general who resigned from the Trudeau cabinet and was expelled

from the Liberal Party, told the Globe and Mail newspaper on Wednesday she was interviewed by the RCMP on Tuesday.

The interview was reportedly regarding political interference in the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. and was con-

ducted by officers from the national division in Ottawa, which handles sensitive political matters. Wilson-Raybould told the Globe and Mail that she could not comment any further on the nature of her conversations with the Mounties. However, she expressed her concern about the government’s decision to deny the RCMP’s request for ac-

Jody Wilson-Raybould cess to other witnesses. “As a matter of principle,

the RCMP should be able to conduct thorough and necessary investigations,” she said. However, no one expects the government to waive cabinet confidentiality for her and the others in connection with the SNC-Lavalin affair. It is also strange that the RMCP should start a probe just when the election was expected to be announced.

The goal of the clinic was to help reduce the barriers to oral cancer and support the prevention and early detection of oral cancer. This event was a great success as 270 patients were screened by the dental team. The data collected by the Pacific Oral Health Society and the Next Gen Oral Dysplasia Clinic team indicated that 18 people were found to be at high risk of having oral cancer and are being reassessed in three weeks time. There was one case that was a direct referral to the cancer clinic that showed positive signs for oral cancer. The Pacific Oral Health Society team along with their generous commitment have volunteered over $40,000 of their time and services for this clinic to be offered free of charge to the community. Pacific Oral Health Society said it is grateful to all the volunteers of the Rotary Club of SurreyNewton and the Next Gen Oral Dysplasia Clinic from UBC for their time and dedication they put into helping with the great success they had with this clinic.

I am emailing to notify the editor of distortions in the August 27 article titled “Have you heard about the 15 apps parents should be aware of?” that states “Kik gives users unlimited access to anyone, anywhere, anytime.” Kik takes online safety very seriously, and we’re constantly assessing and improving our safety measures. There are two ways we do this. One is through technology and constant improvements to the product itself. Our team is regularly investigating new technologies and evaluating moderation practices to help us become leaders in online safety. We also encourage users to report content that they believe violates the Kik Terms of Service and Community Standards. Users are able to block other users they no longer wish to chat with, or ignore chats from people that they don’t know. Actions are taken against users found to have violated Kik’s Community Standards or TOS. Those actions may include banning the user from the Kik platform, and reporting illegal behaviors to law enforcement agencies. The other is through education and partnerships with organizations that help adults and teens understand the challenges of today’s online landscape and how to avoid bad situations. For years, we’ve had teams dedicated to this, and we will continue to invest in those types of tools, provide resources to parents, and strengthen relationships with law enforcement and safety-focused organizations. Online safety will always be a priority for us. We want our users to safely enjoy Kik, and we will continue making it a positive place for them to interact and have meaningful conversations.

Trudeau promises ‘a consistent national speculation and vacancy tax for non-resident, non-Canadians’ up housing costs, by putting in place a consistent national speculation and vacancy tax for non-resident, non-Canadians. In addition to introducing the First-Time Home Buyer Incentive, the Liberal government also: * launched Canada’s first-ever National Housing Strategy, a ten-year plan that will help

more than 600,000 Canadians find safe and affordable places to live; * funded the construction of nearly 140,000 more housing units to be built by 2028; and * created the new Canada Housing Benefit to help 300,000 Canadians with the high costs of rent. “The Conservatives voted against the First-Time Home

Buyer Incentive and have no plan to help address the real concerns Canadians have about being able to own their own home,” said Trudeau. “Liberals believe in investing in people and in communities, which is why we are taking these steps to make homeownership an achievable dream, not just a privilege for the richest few.”

NCCM welcomes resignation of Conservative candidate THE National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) on Friday welcomed the resignation of Cameron Ogilvie, Conservative Party candidate for Winnipeg North, after revelations of Islamophobic and anti-immigrant social media posts on his account. Ogilvie’s social media posts called for a Muslim immigration ban and a ban on

flags from the Middle East, amongst other Islamophobic and racist content. “What Ogilvie is proposing is not only Islamophobic, it is illegal and harkens back to the days when the Komagata Maru was turned away from Canadian shores,” said Mustafa Farooq, NCCM Executive Director. “Proposing illegal conduct and pandering to

fear is unbecoming of any Canadian politician, let alone someone who wants to represent the beautifully diverse city of Winnipeg.” NCCM continues to call on all parties to ensure that there is no place for racism and Islamophobia in this election and thanks the Conservative Party for taking swift action.

Scheer: Conservative government will put more money in your pocket ANDREW Scheer, Conservative Party Leader, said on Wednesday that when Canadians go to the polls on October 21, only his party will have a trustworthy plan to put more money in the pockets of Canadians so that they can get ahead. He said the Conservatives had a clear plan to

help all Canadians whose lives have gotten more expensive under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals. “Canadians are working harder and harder, but they’re just barely getting by and just can’t seem to get ahead. I’m running to be Prime Minister with a clear plan to make life

more affordable for you and your family,” said Scheer. He added that after four years, Trudeau’s huge deficits, mounting debt, tax hikes, and broken promises have left Canadian families worse off. Under Trudeau, 80% of middle-income families have seen their federal

GREEN Party candidate Erick Schomann from Ontario’s Simcoe-North riding resigned after an Islamophobic Facebook post from 2007 caused outrage. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) on Thursday had called on Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party, to drop Schomann as the party’s candidate. The social media post showed Schomann assisting in roasting a pig, with the caption, “We sent the leftovers to Denmark in support of the protestors of the Muhammad comic.” “We call upon the Green

Party of Canada to drop Mr. Schomann as a candidate”, said NCCM’s Executive Director Mustafa Farooq. “While we greatly cherish the free speech rights of all Canadians, when you start promising to mail pieces of a pig carcass, you can no longer stand with the integrity and moral commitment that all those who wish to be elected must have”. Sending pieces of a pig carcass, of course, is a common practice amongst members of the alt-right who believe that sending pieces of a pig will intimidate our community. Indeed, prior to

the Quebec City Mosque shootings, a pig’s head was left at the mosque, the NCCM noted. Schomann told the Toronto Star that he expressed remorse to anyone he had offended in the post, adding: “The last thing I want to do is offend people.” Schomann said he grew up with many Muslims in his early childhood spent in Pakistan and Muslim parts of Nigeria in the 1980s and 90s. He told the Star: “The last thing I would want to do is harm them in any way. I said a stupid thing.”

Uncovering covert strokes to stop dementia Dr. Eric Smith is working to predict who is at risk for stroke-related dementia, and ultimately prevent it.

11

Stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted and cells are damaged or die as a result. This damage can lead to dementia – at any age. Dementia refers to problems with memory and thinking. Mild dementia can limit the ability to drive or do basic math; in its progressed stage, it can prevent people from looking after basic tasks like bathing, dressing and communicating.

“It’s more than a coincidence that my career is in stroke research,” he says. “My family history with my grandmothers is one of the things that made me want to go into medicine for stroke, to try to help people and help other families hopefully not experience those kinds of tragedies.”

While stroke and dementia have common risk factors, researchers are discovering that dementia is more closely related to stroke and changes in blood vessels than they previously thought. About a third of all dementia is related to stroke. By preventing stroke, we can reduce our risk for dementia too.

Learn the signs of stroke

Dr. Smith is focusing on covert strokes – small strokes in the brain that cause only very subtle symptoms. “What we’re finding is that covert strokes are actually pretty common among Canadians and could be as likely to lead to dementia as large strokes. Up to 20% of people in their 70s can have one or more of these covert strokes,” explains Dr. Smith. iMy research is defining this problem so that we can identify the extent to which covert strokes are predicting problems with memory and thinking, or to the risk of large strokes – or dementia. It’s the first step to developing prevention strategies and treatments, through lifestyle changes and medication, for this condition.”

Both Dr. Eric Smith’s grandmothers died of stroke. “I recall my parents making tough decisions and advocating on their behalf because both had strokes that affected their speech,” says the University of Calgary researcher. “That was one of the experiences that made me realize how terrible a problem stroke is, and how much more we need to learn and do to help people who’ve been affected by stroke.” Today Dr. Smith is engaged in a study aimed at shedding light on one of the most devastating consequences of stroke: dementia.

Dr. Smith’s study, supported by Heart & Stroke Foundation donors, is the first to focus on this area in Canada, and also among the first to look at covert strokes not just in people in their 70s and 80s, but in people aged late 30s, 40s, and 50s. The researchers use brain scans to look for evidence that someone has had a covert stroke. Matching that information with memory tests at three-year intervals, Dr. Smith hopes to identify people in midlife who might be at risk in later life for dementia.

Jagmeet Singh: ‘I am in it for you’ SURROUNDED by candidates and supporters, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday launched his 2019 election

campaign. He said his New Deal for People invests in services people need, makes life more afford-

able and fights the climate crisis. “For too long, Liberal and Conservative governments have

been making life easier for the rich, and harder for everybody else,” said Singh. “Throughout the country I meet people working hard, looking to be treated fairly and just wanting to live a good life. These are the people the NDP has always worked for. These are the people I’m in it for.” He saidt that four years ago, Justin Trudeau charmed Canadians with pretty words and empty promises. It’s clear Trudeau is not who he pretended to be, and people have been paying the price. And Andrew Scheer would rather cut taxes for big corporations and cut services Canadians count on. That’s what Conservatives do. “Liberals and Conservatives have shown they are in it for their rich friends, not for you,” added Singh. “New Democrats are different. We won’t just say the right things, we will actually do them. Canadians can count on us to fight for them.” Political observers are weighing in on Jagmeet Singh’s campaign launch. Here’s

The leader

of the NDP delivered the best campaign launch speech.” – Steve E. Fortin, Le Journal de Québec “Singh looked very polished today. I think they did an excellent job with the kick off of the campaign.” – Chris Cochrane, University of Toronto professor “Biggest surprise of the week so far - slick launch by Jagmeet Singh. Good visuals, great oppo research linking Liberals with their “wealthy friends,” launch speech talking about Justin Trudeau’s “pretty words and empty promises.” He’s not dead yet.” – John Ivison, National Post “Singh represents diversity.” – Don Martin, CTV “Interesting how journos questioning Singh are focused on process, organization issues that only insiders care about. But, he’s pivoting back to people issues. I wonder what the casually interested are listening to.” – Darrell Bricker, Ipsos “A great launch.” – Evan Solomon, CTV “He talked like Jack Layton.” – Rosemary Barton, CBC

Green Party allows its candidates to have pro-Bill 21 stances NATIONAL Council of Canadian Muslims Executive Director Mustafa Farooq on Monday called the Green Party’s position that its candidates can have pro-Bill 21 stances in Quebec “unacceptable.” An Act Respecting the Laicity of the State (often referred to as Bill 21) was passed by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government earlier this year, and prohibits Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs, among others, from wearing religious symbols and becoming prosecu-

tors, teachers, police officers, etc. “I’m sorry, [Green Party Leader] Ms. [Elizabeth] May, but I find that position unacceptable,” said Farooq, “There is nothing conscionable about second-class citizenship. When we say that people who work with us can say that some of our colleagues, like a Jewish colleague wearing a kippah, in 2019, couldn’t become a prosecutor, that’s unacceptable”. Over 93% who completed survey prefer permanent daylight saving time MORE than 93% of the record 223,273 British Columbians who completed the Province’s survey on time observance have indicated they would prefer a move to permanent daylight saving time (DST). “The people of British Columbia have spoken and their collective voice has come through loudly and clearly, said Premier John Horgan on Tuesday. “This engagement has done exactly as we hoped it would in providing clarity about a preferred direction. The insights generated will be relied upon as we make a final decision about how to move forward. Desire for a move to per-

Premier John Horgan manent DST was consistent throughout the province, with more than 90% of respondents in each region indicating their support. More than half (54%) responded that it was “important or “very important for B.C. to be aligned with neighbouring jurisdictions in its time obser-

vance practices. Results from the engagement will be considered alongside decisions made by jurisdictions in Canada and the western United States as the Province determines the best course of action moving forward. Lawmakers in Washington, Oregon and California are in various stages of creating or enacting legislation that, pending federal approval, would see those states adopt year-round observance of daylight saving time. “I’m very pleased that so many took time to share their views in this important engagement, Premier Horgan said. “We will continue to

monitor similar debates in neighbouring jurisdictions, keeping in mind the wideranging impacts. We want to make sure we consider every implication in determining what is right for B.C. Quick Facts: * Support for year-round observance of DST was higher

than 90% across all industry groups and in all occupational groups, except for students. * 75% of those preferring year-round DST identified health and wellness concerns as a reason for their support. * 53% of respondents noted the benefits of additional daylight during the evening

commute in winter, while 39% identified other safety concerns as reasons for their support. * Among those who favoured retaining the biannual time change, balancing daylight hours throughout the year and health and wellness concerns were the most commonly identified reasons.

Do you know of a House with Sculptural Water Tank in Punjab?

Attorney General David Eby says De Jong’s statements regarding Hastings race track ‘misleading’ DAVID Eby, Attorney General, in a statement accused B.C. Liberal MLA and former finance minister Mike de Jong of issuing “misleading statements about his concerns regarding Hastings race track and said that it is important to set the record straight. Eby said: “On November 3, 2016, I alerted Mr. De Jong to concerns that the provincial drug policy was not being consistently enforced at race tracks in Metro Vancouver. “Mr. De Jong then responded that he engaged George Morfitt, a former auditor general, to conduct an independent review. Mr. De Jong concluded that, based on Mr. Morfitt’s review, he was satisfied that the horse racing unit was following best practices. “What Mr. De Jong failed

David Eby to mention was that, in Mr. Morfitt’s independent review, there were numerous areas of concern and made several recommendations. One of those concerns was that security at both Hastings Park and Fraser Downs race tracks is not as rigorous as it needs to be, particularly on non-race days. Mr. Morfitt recommended that “security measures at the Lower Mainland race tracks be re-

viewed by track officials and staff responsible for security or sensitive information and of the race track premises. In particular, access to the back stretch by unlicensed persons, especially on non-race days, appears to be a matter that requires attention. “I understand Mr. De Jong’s defensiveness of his history on the gaming file. But what I don’t understand why, when he gets a report raising issues and concerns on the backstretch of Hastings race track, is he doesn’t feel some sense of responsibility or accountability. This is similar to when he was asked questions about money laundering and kept claiming that there were no issues when in reality, money laundering was impacting BC’s economy.

A Vancouver visual arts researcher and Mumbai architectural photographer will be travelling through the Doaba District in the Punjab during late October 2019 to document village houses with sculptural water tanks that celebrate the house and family. This work will develop into a museum exhibition to bring to British Columbia awareness of this unique cultural expression. I am interested in speaking with anyone who might have a house with one of these water tanks or who knows of someone who does for potential inclusion in the exhibition in British Columbia #OMPLETE RESPECT AND CONlDENCE ASSURED

B.C. well prepared with balanced budget, resilient economy amid global uncertainty: Finance Minister THE Province’s first quarterly results confirm B.C. is on solid footing, thanks to careful planning and strong budget manage-

ment that is delivering the services people count on, making life more affordable for people and building a sustainable economy,

according to Finance Minister Carole James. She said: “Over the past two years, we have shown that putting people first is good for the economy and good for our province. We will continue to monitor and adapt to global economic volatility and trade uncertainty, but our plan is working, and our economy is resilient. By investing in the people who power our province, we are building a more sustainable economy that will pay dividends for years to come.” James said British Columbia remains at the forefront of the national economy with some of the strongest employment growth and lowest unemployment rates in the country, continued strong wage growth, among the highest gross domestic product (GDP) growth and a balanced budget that invests in people and communities. A $1-billion investment is transforming child care in B.C. for tens of thousands of families, and more than 21,000 new homes are open or underway throughout B.C., thanks to government’s historic $7-billion investment in

Finance Minister Carole James Photo by Vinnie Combow affordable housing. She added: “The true measure of a strong economy is making life better for people, and this will remain at the forefront as we plan for the future ahead. We remain committed to balanced budgets while delivering jobs for British Columbians through the largest capital plan in B.C.’s history, the largest middle-class tax cut in a generation and investing in services that make life better and more affordable for people, as we build a stronger and more sustainable economy.” After years of escalating real estate prices that were far out of reach for most people, B.C.’s affordable housing plan is helping to moderate the market, contributing to a decline in housing prices and property transfer tax revenues, said James. “For too long, the previous government put maximizing property transfer tax revenue first while speculators, and even money launderers, took advantage of our overheated housing market. We are not interested in short-term gains at the expense of future generations. That’s why we are tackling the housing crisis head-on, so people can find and afford a home where they live and work,” said James. The government’s first-quarter forecast demonstrates that B.C. is on solid fiscal footing, and will be an economic leader in Canada despite a changing and more volatile global economic environment. ICBC remains a significant risk to the Province’s finances, and government remains committed to getting ICBC back on a solid fiscal track. “We are working hard for the people of our province to deliver the services people count on as we maintain our strong economic position,” added James. Quick Facts: * The first-quarter outlook for 2019-20 forecasts a modest surplus of $179 million, rising to forecasts of $291 million in 2020-21 and $573 million in 2021-22. * British Columbia led the provinces with the lowest unemployment rate for two years straight – one of the longest periods of lowest unemployment in more than a decade. * British Columbia’s real GDP growth is expected to rank among the top provinces again in 2019 and 2020, with forecasts estimating 1.7% growth this year and 1.9% in 2020. * In 2019-20, the taxpayer-supported debtto-GDP ratio projection improved to 14.8%, and the taxpayer supported debt-to-revenue ratio is now forecast to improve to 80%. * The first quarterly report maintains a $500-million forecast allowance to address potential unforeseen circumstances. * Contingency funding remains healthy at $450 million, reduced by $300 million to offset changing revenues due to slowing global growth and lower emergency costs. * The government’s 10-year housing plan – the largest investment in housing affordability in B.C.’s history – is moderating the market, cracking down on speculation, closing loopholes, building the homes people need and making renting more secure.

20 Hundreds of taxi drivers and owners and their supporters packed Vancouver’s Fraserview Hall last weekend to protest the unfair treatment they are receiving from the Passenger Transportation Board. They were thrilled by the support that they received from Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum (not in the photos) who pointed out that all these years the taxi industry had been asking for more licences to serve the public better, but they were denied these. Now, however, the PTB wanted to give unlimited licences to the ride-hailing companies. McCallum reportedly said that he would not issue licences for Surrey for the ride-hailing companies, but the provincial government said that he did not have the power to do so. Other speakers noted that industries such as taxis and trucks where South Asians are heavily involved are always treated unfairly.

7 charges approved against accused in YVR luggage thefts RICHMOND RCMP YVR Detachment announced on Wednesday that the BC Prosecution Service has approved seven charges against Miriam Tremblay, 26, of Vancouver. Tremblay was arrested by RCMP on August 2 in their ongoing investigation into luggage thefts at Vancouver International Airport. She has been charged with seven counts of theft under $5,000. The charges originated from alleged lug-

gage carousel thefts that occurred between July 12 and August 2 at the YVR Domestic Terminal Building. “Richmond RCMP YVR Detachment is committed to ensuring the safety and security of travellers to Vancouver International Airport,” said Sgt. Ross Lundie, Operations NCO. “Our officers, especially those from our Airport Crime Unit, have been steadfast in gathering evidence to move this case forward.”

B.C. in economic trouble under Horgan, Q1 numbers raise red flags: B.C. Liberals MLA’S Shirley Bond and Tracy Redies, BC Liberal Finance Co-Critics, are sounding the alarm after Tuesday’s Q1 numbers show in just over two years, Premier John Horgan has taken B.C. from an economic powerhouse to a province teetering on the edge of deficit. “The housing market is showing real signs of stress and the NDP has lost over $800 million in Property Transfer Tax revenue that could have gone towards helping forestry workers or eliminating school portables in Surrey as promised,” said Redies, MLA for Surrey-White Rock. “On top of his 19 new or increased taxes, John Horgan’s lack of a plan to grow the economy is already having negative impacts. GDP growth is now predicted to be 1.7 per cent versus 2.4 per cent after only one quarter. British Columbians can’t afford more of John Horgan.” Figures released last week show B.C. has lost almost 17,000 jobs over the past three months. Meanwhile, the NDP are continuing to spend at a breakneck speed with expenses up even though revenues are coming down. Continuing this pattern will lead B.C. to a deficit, say the B.C. Liberals. “No one should be surprised that British Columbians are paying the price for NDP fiscal policy. It took years to rebuild the damage from the last time they were in government and in fact they inherited the leading economy and job creation record in the country,” added Bond, MLA for Prince George-Valemount. “Once again we see a government with a tax and spend approach who continue to ignore the economic risks that our province is facing. British Columbians deserve better.” B.C. Liberals list Horgan’s economic failures: * Property Transfer Tax numbers are $822 million below what the NDP projected in Budget 2018

NDP policy killing forestry jobs in Surrey: BC Liberals SURREY’S BC Liberal MLAs are demanding action from Premier John Horgan after Teal-Jones announced it is immediately shutting down its coastal logging operations in B.C. – a move that will carry devastating consequences for an estimated 400 Surrey workers. “For months, John Horgan and his forests minister have buried their heads in the sand and refused to acknowledge our forestry sector is in crisis – even when it was their government’s policies that got us here,” said Tracy Redies, Surrey-White Rock MLA, on Tuesday. “Today’s announcement by Teal-Jones is just the latest in a series of closures and curtailments that are hitting closer and closer to home for Surrey residents.” Teal-Jones, which is headquartered in Surrey, operates local lumber and cedar shake and shingle mills. The company says the decision to curtail its coastal logging operations will result in a “substantial” loss of local jobs. “According to John Horgan’s handpicked forestry representative, there are ‘too many mills’ in B.C.,” said Marvin Hunt, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA. “I challenge John Horgan to come to Surrey and explain to the local workers who are losing their jobs that their workplace was just one of ‘too many’. These are families that rely on forestry to put food on the table – and they’ve been completely abandoned by the very government that promised to make their lives more affordable.” Teal-Jones curtailed part of its coastal logging operations in May before announcing today it would halt its coastal operations altogether. The company cited low lumber prices and increasing production costs, including high provincial stumpage rates and costly new regulations, as the reasons behind this decision. “Forestry built and continues to build our province – something John Horgan and the NDP refuse to acknowledge,” said Stephanie Cadieux, Surrey South MLA. “This isn’t just a rural problem – this is a B.C. problem. The hardworking Surrey families who rely on forestry deserve action from their government.”

Violent crime lowest in 10 years in Surrey: RCMP SURREY RCMP announced on Tuesday they have released the latest Surrey crime profile which details statistics on crime in the city over the past 10 years and Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, Surrey RCMP Officer in Charge, said: “The violent crime rate has been trending down over the past 10 years, and in 2018 it was the lowest it has been in the last decade.” The 10-year crime profile is compiled by

the Surrey RCMP based on the data submitted to Statistics Canada following Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) scoring rules and guidelines (for example, only the most serious offence per file is counted). The Crime Profile provides a picture of local long-term trends with respect to select crime types and overall crime categories. These statistics are now available on the Surrey RCMP website. Here are some of the highlights for 2018:

* Overall crime (by volume) has been trending downward since 2014. Similarly, the overall crime rate has been trending down over the last decade, despite the increase experienced in 2014. In 2018, for the fourth consecutive year, crime overall (by both volume and rate) decreased from the previous year. * The total number of Criminal Code offences in 2018 was below the 10-year average (6% lower). In fact, it is the lowest it has been in the last 10 years. * The crime rate decreased 6% from the previous year, and 25% from 2014. The crime rate in 2018 was lower than the 10year average (16% lower), and the lowest it has been in the last 10 years. It has decreased each year in the last decade (from the previous year), with the exception of the spike in 2014. * Surrey’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) has been trending downward since 2009. The 2018 CSI value is down nearly 9% from the year previous and the lowest it has been in the last decade. * The Violent Crime Severity Index has also been trending downward over the last 10 years, and despite a small upswing in 2015, reached a 10-year low in 2018. The Non-Violent Crime Severity Index has also been trending downward over the last decade. “Although our crime rate continues to decrease in Surrey, I want to acknowledge the impact that crime – particularly violent crime – has on our community. pact on how you feel and your perception of crime,” said McDonald. “Collectively, we still have work to do in improving public safety and, as your local police force, we will continue our efforts through prevention, intervention, and enforcement.” Members of the public are encouraged to inform themselves on crime rates and trends in the city by visiting the Surrey RCMP website. Surrey RCMP also invited residents to get involved: help them keep Surrey safe by joining Block Watch.

Gunshots fired in Delta’s Tsawwassen

AT approximately 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, Delta Police responded to report of shots being fired in the 5500-block of 18th Avenue in Tsawwassen. There were no reported injuries

but a vehicle was hit. The incident is not believed to be gang-related and instead a result of an ongoing dispute between parties known to each other, police said on Thursday.

A number of police resources were called into the area, including the Lower Mainland District Police Dog Services, however the suspect(s) fled the scene prior to police arrival.

Trudeau: We made investments that made real difference in people’s lives PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday that in October, Canadians have a choice to make about the future of the country: “keep moving forward and building on the progress we’ve made, or go back to the politics of the Harper years.” In 2015, after a decade of failed Conservative policy, Canada’s economy was sputtering. Economic growth, job creation, and wages were all stalled – thanks to a Conservative government that believed you could cut your way to prosperity, he added. “Canadians were tired of a Harper government that promised prosperity, and delivered the opposite. So in 2015, they chose a team that was willing to invest in people and their communities. We live in the best country in the world, but better is always possible,” said Trudeau. “And while there’s more work ahead of us than behind us, we have spent the last four years building toward better – and we’ve got the record to show for it.” He said that over the last four years, the Liberal government made investments that made a real difference in people’s lives: * We’ve put more money in people’s pockets by cutting taxes for the middle class and raising them on the wealthiest one percent; * We stopped sending child benefit cheques to millionaires, so we could send more to the single parent working two jobs, and to

the family of five that falls a bit short at the end of the month; * We made the Canada Pension Plan even stronger, because in a country like ours, seniors shouldn’t struggle to make ends meet; and * We’re protecting our nature, and ensuring that our air stays clean and our water stays safe – because we owe it to our kids, and to ourselves, to take care of our environment. Since 2015, Canadians have created over a million new jobs. The new Canada Child Benefit is helping parents pay for healthier groceries, summer camp, and school supplies. We’ve lifted 900,000 Canadians out of poverty – and that includes over 300,000 kids. And this fall, Canadians once again get to vote for the kind of Canada they want to live in, he said. “Conservatives like to say they’re for the people, but then they cut taxes for the wealthy and cut services for everybody else,” said Trudeau. “Our government has chosen to move Canada forward by investing in families, workers, and communities.

On October 21st, let’s stand united, and let’s choose forward – for a stronger middle

class, and for a better Canada for all Canadians.”

Andrew Scheer to reduce cost of public transit CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Andrew Scheer on Friday announced in Mississauga, Ontario, that as Prime Minister he would introduce the Green Public Transit Tax Credit to reduce the cost of public transit and put more money back in the pockets of Canadians. He said: “For so many Canadians, especially our students, young professionals, young families, and seniors, the cost of public transit can be a significant out-of-pocket expense. The Green Public Transit Tax Credit will provide much-needed relief to transit users and commuters so they can just worry about getting home on time, and not so much about their bottom line.” A family of four in the Greater Toronto Area that regularly takes the TTC would save almost $1,000 per year with a new Conservative Government’s Green Public Transit Tax Credit. A young professional regularly commuting on GO Transit from Oshawa to downtown Toronto would save around $650 per year. The Credit will be for transit passes that allow for unlimited travel within Canada on local busses, streetcars, subways, commuter trains, and ferries. Some electronic fare cards and weekly passes can be eligible if they are used on an ongoing basis. Scheer noted that the Trudeau Liberals eliminated the Public Transit Tax Credit in 2017 and hit the wallets of 1.8 million Canadians. This is exactly what Canadians can expect with four more years of Trudeau, poor judgement, higher taxes, more expenses. “Life is expensive enough and the government should not make it more expensive,” said Scheer. “My plan is about supporting Canadians and helping them reach their goals by easing the daily pressures that they face just to get to work, or to care for their kids, or to manage their homes. This tax credit means you can worry a bit less.” The Green Public Transit Tax Credit is an important part of A Real Plan to Protect the Environment, Canada’s Conservative’s plan to fight climate change by lowering emissions with our core promise of leaving more money in Canadians’ pockets and letting them get ahead. The Credit will also reduce congestion on our roads and cut commute times for Canadians so that everyone can get home faster at the end of the work day.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promises families relief on cell phone and internet bills NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Friday announced his plan to protect Canadians from gouging by big telecom companies. Singh is calling for a cap on cell phone and internet prices, which would save families almost $250 a year. “For most Canadians, having a cell phone and high-speed Internet is not a choice — they need these things for school, for work, and to stay connected with family and friends,” said Singh. “And Canadians who are fortunate to have access to reliable service pay some of the highest prices in the developed world. They can’t afford to give these things up, even as rising costs squeeze their budgets.” Liberal and Conservative governments have left Canadians to go at it alone as telecom companies gouge them all while raking in billions of dollars. On Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s watch, the Big Five telecoms enjoyed profit margins of almost 40 per cent in 2017. To top it off, Trudeau rewarded Bell, Rogers and Telus with $50 million in subsidies and more than $700 million in contracts, according to the NDP. “Canadians deserve better than Liberal and Conservative governments that keep making life easier for their corporate friends and harder for everyone else,” said Singh. “I’m ready to fight for everyday people and stand up to rich telecom companies. Our plan to cap prices on cell phone and internet bills is part of our commitment to make life more affordable.” The New Deal for People would also introduce a Telecom Consumers’ Bill of Rights to put an end to the aggressive and misleading sales and services practices of big cell and internet companies. The NDP will require service providers to offer basic plans that meet the needs of Canadians, end caps for internet plans and require companies to offer affordable, unlimited data plans for cellphones – so Canadians don’t have any surprise on their monthly bills. Quick Facts: * Among OECD countries and other developed economies, Canadians pay some of the highest prices for mobile wireless and broadband subscriptions. * Similar countries like Australia are sometimes paying two times less than Canada for the same plan. * In 2018, the total revenue per gigabyte in Canada was roughly 70 times higher than in India and 23 times higher than in Finland. * Canadian telecoms made 35 times what Indian companies made for the same data usage in 2017. As a result, Canada has lower data use than many other countries. * The NDP price cap will save families on average $10 per month for each bill meaning that a family with two plans will save almost $250 per year.

Public’s help sought in identifying violent robbery suspect METRO Vancouver Transit Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who allegedly committed two robberies, choking the victim in each of the incidents until they became unconscious. The first incident occurred in the early morning of August 18, at approximately 12:15 a.m., when a 45-year-old man was on a bus headed toward Marine Drive Canada Line Station. He was befriended by the suspect who followed him off the bus, to an unknown location near Marine Drive Canada Line Station. The suspect asked for a cigarette and, when the victim refused, he walked away only to The suspect. return, allegedly tackling the victim and placing him in a headlock until he lost consciousness. When the victim woke up, the suspect demanded he buy him a drink at Marine Drive Canada Line Station. When the victim entered the store to buy the drink, the suspect fled with the victim’s phone, boarding a Canada Line train. The second incident occurred on August 20, at approximately 11:45 p.m., when the suspect approached a 26-year-old man as he entered the Stadium SkyTrain Station. The suspect started a conversation with the victim. The victim felt unsafe and tried to leave but the man allegedly grabbed the victim, placing him in a headlock and choking him until he was unconscious. In this incident, the suspect stole the victim’s wallet. The victim’s credit card was later used to make a $400 purchase from a convenience store. The suspect is described as a white or Indigenous male in his late 30’s, approximately 5’8-5’10, with a stocky build and short brown hair. In both circumstances, the suspect had a pair of unique whiteframed glasses with reflective lenses worn propped up on his head. Transit Police say they are very concerned by the level of violence this suspect is willing to use. Anyone with information about the identity of this suspect, or who witnessed this incident, is asked to contact Transit Police tip-line at 604-516-7419 or text them using code 87-77-77 and refer to file 2019-15236.

Surrey RCMP urge witnesses to September 8 fatal collision to come forward

SURREY RCMP are urging witnesses to the fatal collision which occurred on September 8 on Nordel Way, east of 120th Street to come forward. On September 8, at approximately 1:15 a.m., RCMP were advised of a two-vehicle collision. A grey Camero with two males in their late twenties was westbound in the fast lane on Nordell Way when a black Mustang, also with two occupants in their late twenties, passed the Camero, and the two vehicles collided. The Mustang lost control and went sideways into a hydro pole. The driver of the Mustang received serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the Mustang succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two occupants of the Camero received minor injuries. It was raining heavily at the time of the collision. Investigators believe there are witnesses to this collision who have not yet spoken to police. Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502. “We are not only seeking to speak to people who saw the impact of the collision, but anyone who may have seen the vehicles involved driving prior to the collision,” said Cpl. Elenore Sturko on Tuesday. “We are also asking for any available dash-cam or cell phone videos.”

ROAD RULES

Indo-Canadian Voice

Eating while driving is a distraction GPS, using earphones, playing extremely loud music, adjusting the radio, personal grooming, smoking, etc. ICBC even identifies “chatting with passengers” as a potential distracted driving offence. Ultimately, they do not restrict what constitutes “distracted driving” because truly anything may serve as a distraction.

Cedric Hughes

THIS month (September) has been deemed “Distracted Driving Month” for 2019 by the RCMP. This means there is a stronger police presence on the roads. Additionally, the RCMP are implementing greater enforcement tactics for distracted driving. Distracted Driving Statistics “Distracted driving is responsible for more than 25% of all car crash fatalities and is the second leading cause of fatal collisions in BC.” The RCMP reports that each year, an average of 78 people die in car accidents due to distracted driving. In BC alone, approximately 12,000 people have multiple distracted driving offences. Consequences and Fines In British Columbia, a distracted driver will receive a fine of $368 and four penalty points for their first offence. This comes to a total of $543. For a second offence, the fines can total as much as $2,000. The costs continue to go up with each subsequent offense. In Ontario the consequences are a bit more severe. A distracted driver receives an automatic summons to attend court. If they are convicted for the first time, the fine can be as much as $1,000 and three penalty points. A second conviction could result in a fine of $2,000 and a seven-day license suspension. A third conviction could mean a fine of $3,000 and a 30-day suspension. Snacks, Drinks, and Mascara So, what exactly is distracted driving? Most people think of using their cellular device while driving. And yes, that does qualify, but the list does not stop there. According to the RCMP, “distracted driving” means anything that distracts you from the road. This includes: reading books and maps, eating, drinking, using a

Avoiding Distractions Yes, the list of potential distracted driving offenses is technically endless. That may seem daunting or even a bit extreme on the part of the RCMP. However, the main goal is difficult to argue with: all drivers need to pay close attention to the road. If getting every last drop out of your Dr. Pepper means that you have to take your eyes off the road,

don’t do it. If you are extremely lost and you need to consult your Google Maps, pull over. The fines

may be steep, but they serve as an efficient deterrent to distracted driving.
